Unless this is a requirement, turn around and run. Her assignments are poorly written, hard to understand, and she DOESN'T like to help. Her teaching techniques are fair, but Good Luck if you have to take this class!
Ann Ford wasn't teaching here the year before I had this wench. That class was out of control in difficulty. If you take this class, go in for office hours with your TA...It's the only way you'll pass. Since more than 50% of my class failed.
Class isn't that bad. Most of the stuff in lecture was never used in programs. Go to office hours if you are confused and go EARLY. Exams are a little more difficult. She's not too bad; overwhelming at times because most students know nothing about computer programming and she knows a lot.
I agree with another comment: her program write-ups are vague and if you assume anything (such as the things that weren't made explicit in the write-up) you're bound to have points deducted in an almost rediculously arbitary manner. Though I got a B in her class, I cannot suggest this teacher.
Worst teacher ever!! Very unapproachable, not understanding about anything.
Nice lady, but sort of difficult to understand
does serve as much of a teacher
i had to take all calculus courses but believe me this course was one of the most horrible experiences i ever had. She doesnt explain well, her grading is depressing, she takes points off for the most stupid things. Her tests suck... and i can tell you i studied...
OK. I must say that I love programming. I still love programming even though I think this class was a total waste of time and money. Grading in this course is very unfair. Hopefully FSU will get a better instructor for this course.
Going to lecture is a wate of time. It doesn't help at all on the program assignemtns.
Do NOT take this class if you don't have to. Her tests are ridiculously hard and her program assignments require a lot of you free time. If you must, go to office hours as often as possible and EARLY. If you work hard on the programs and go to class regularly, you should be able to get a B like me
Points are deducted on programs for stupid reasons, but she tells you those reasons in advance. I put in very little work and got an A.

horrible teacher!!!!!!!!!!!
She is by far the worst teacher i have had at FSU. Is not clear on anything that she goes over. The programs she makes you do are ridiculous becuase she put things on there that you havent even gone over yet. hardly anyone goes to class. The TA's will help u more than she will. Very unclear. Not helpful. Dont take her unless you have to
worst class and teacher ive had while at fsu
Its a hard class but not a :( class. This was a great intro to programming for those who want to learn. If you go to class and get 70ish grades on your programs you will be fine. Prof Ford does a great job lecturing. There are lots of TAs to help. Take this before taking 3406. If you want to see a crap programming class take Fleming for 3406.
Ann is a pretty good teacher herself. But the programs you have to do have to be done EXACTLY as she wants them. If there even slightly different, but they work prefectly, be prepared to get your grade knocked down 2 letter grades. Graders are anal, as is she.
For intro to programming she was wonderful. Its not an easy class by far but if you try and do things on time and don't fool around you'll be more than fine. She is super nice and knows what she is doing. Would highly recommend.
I thought her lectures were good. If I didn't understand something all I had to do was ask and she would explain until i did. I don't know what people don't like about her. Just go to every class, ask questions and give answers sometimes when she asks and she will love you. Start your programs before the night before. Grading is tough.
Ford knows what she is talking about. Her documentation for the projects is great. If you have any questions ask her or the TA if the project is not explained enough to you. Read a head in chapters and lectures help, but make sure you read the book. Do the projects ahead of time and you will be fine if you take time to visit during office hours.
Her lectures are really good. She provides sample programs and lecture files for the whole semester on blackboard. She is always willing to help you out. Best CS teacher I have had at FSU.
She's extremely boring. She won't answer in class questions. The only way I stayed awake in that class was eating in class. Go to the TA's as soon as you have a new project assigned. Tests are hard.
People who fail the class don't do the work. I will admit, this is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life, and I spent many nights not sleeping but doing the work for over 24 hours. But the TAs are always there to help & the textbook explains everything. The people who do poorly hold the programs off for the last minute, do don't it.
This teacher's last name used to be Ford so you'll find more ratings under Ann Ford. My experience was positive; this class requires a LOT of work. The quality of the example programs, lectures, etc were excellent. She puts a copy of everything online. Other people have said she's unhelpful - she'll help you during office hours, but not in class.
This class is passable if you study very hard. She will absolutely refuse to help you if you have not gone through to the TAs first. Class attendence for understanding is necessary - certain things are not allowed in early projects, but are mandatory in later projects, and you can only find out during class. Don't take it if there's another option.
She is very rude to students and unwilling to discuss assignment issues.
Ann Tyson is the WORST TEACHER TO EVERY TEACH!! She is unbelievably rude, does not care about her students, and the most dull person to listen to. She reported me to the dean of students telling me one of my emails to her was rude. Dean sided with me and was shocked at how Tyson reacted. DON'T TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH THIS UNPROFESSIONAL TEACHER!!
It's obvious that Ann herself wrote all the good reviews. SHE WILL NOT ANSWER AANNNYYY QUESTIONS! Everyone I have talked to who took her class will agree that she HATES her students. She reported me to the dean for an "unprofessional and rude email", the dean sided with me and was shocked at how rude and cold she really is. STAY AWAY FROM ANN TYSON
Great class! Honestly the test were ridiculous! It felt like they were trying to weed out students, and if you don't apply yourself you will fail. I easily put in over 60 hours for a program and still got a C on it. If you never programmed before it's going to be very difficult for you, but if you do have some experience you will have no problem.
This teacher is just awful! Read the book and teach yourself! I was lost in lecture, fully understood the book so I stopped going. I asked Ann for help and she wrote me a page long email, yelling at me for asking her a question. Told me she isn't the person I should ask. If not the teacher, then who? The TAs whom are just one year more advanced? :(
She makes it crystal clear at the beginning of the semester that you should approach your ta's with any issues before you approach her, they are hired to help you understand and they do the grading of your assignments. Class attendance is mandatory and the midterm and final are very tough. I had zero prior programming experience and swung an A.
She's a good instructor, knows what she's talking about and seems to care. The class was pretty easy, just do the assignments and attend office hours if you have questions... simple as that.
I can safely say she is one of the worst professors at FSU. She refuses to help students with code and makes them go to TA's office hours. She was rude to students during class. The programs take countless hours. And your only choice for help is living in the TA's office, since the book and her slides tell you nothing. Avoid if possible (it's not).
She has a very monotonous voice that makes it impossible to pay attention. Anything she teaches can be read out of the book or her slides. She's not a very good teacher but her class is very easy. The way she grades her programs is very obsolete relative to programming standards. Don't let this class make you lose interest in programming.
She's rude and unhelpful. Unfortunately, she is the only professor for COP3014. Her lecture slides are a mess (clearly in her student days she was never trained in public speaking) and her lectures are tedious. An advanced student will find her teaching too slow, and a beginning student will find it opaque.
This class is not a beginner's course in my opinion. I have no experience, and we are already trying to write the code for "Wheel of Fortune"! Are u serious!!! Students that do well in the class normally have lots of experience or have failed it about 5 times-- before they finally pass. You figure it out!!! Horrible professor!!! TA's are GREAT...
She isn't helpful at all. Hard to blame her, hard to teach an intro class. Not terribly hard, and nothing compared to COP3330. If you cannot manage this class, you probably won't be able to use classes (true C++) or DMA. For those who want to minor, keep in mind the next class is a 5000 level one (3000 for majors)
This is the only time I've rated a teacher so it says something. Prof. Ford is by far and I mean BY FAR the worst teacher I've had thus far at FSU. I don't understand material in lectures and I don't bother asking questions cause she'll tell me to just come to office hours. She's terribly boring and laughs at her own jokes nonstop.
She may be the worst teacher I have ever had. I am the type of person that enjoys strict hard teachers, but I did not like her. She doesn't care about her students and is not willing to help. I don't think she understands that this is an intro class.
I took this over a 6 week session during summer and it was terrible. REMEMBER: You can test out of this at the FSU testing center. I recommend you try the test before taking it because the first time is free. The class itself was elementary(assignments are formatting font, margins) I got an A- just ignore the teacher's attitude and you'll be good.
This professor is easily the most obnoxious person I have ever met. Not only is she RUDE to her students and UNWILLING to help, but her classes are boring and painful. In 10 minutes of class, 44 students walked out of the lecture. That should honestly say it all. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS TEACHER.
If you have the choice of avoiding this teacher do so. She is obnoxious and all the bad comments you see on here are absolutely true. I dont even go to class. Instead, i do the assignments in the library when i would have normally been in class. there really is no need to attend the class.
This lady is very unhelpful and insensitive. She has so sympathy when something goes wrong with blackboard. When you try to talk to her she just keeps referring to the syllabus. Extremely annoying.
She is the worst teacher I have had at FSU. She never shows up to class, therefore her TA's teach...and they don't help you learn anything. It's useless to even show up for this class. Might as well take it online. Also, when it comes to test review time, they don't help you review at all in their "review sessions" and the tests are hard!
Worst teacher I have ever had. Made a 22,000 word study guide and got a B on the first test. After complaining to her about this she says "well I wouldn't get an a in quantum physics if I studied that much". This is CGS.....
DO NOT GO to this class. I went on the first day for drop/add and that's it. The projects are no-brainers and you just need the Technology in Action book to study for the tests (which are hard and boring computer technical stuff). Suffer through the tests with Cs and get 100's on the projects and you can get an A/high B.
Assignments were really easy 100s. Tests were extremely difficult - even if you read and reread the textbook. Attended class 2-3 times the whole semester - boring and unhelpful. Just do the assignments well and study as well as you can for exams and you can get an A.
Pointless class. I took it online, and it was not time consuming at all. 4 assignments, 2 tests. The assignments are tedious but easy. The tests are really stupid. Know ALL vocab to do well on tests and start studying early.
extremely patronizing. going to lecture is almost pointless. and just remember "YOU SHOULD HAVE LEARNED IT IN 3014"
Tyson is great at teaching this class. She goes a bit slow and asks questions and answers questions during lecture to make sure everyone understands the topic. Of course, if you don't study you will get lost, but that isn't her fault. If you read the book, do the example problems, and pay attention in lecture, you will do great.
Easily one of the worst professors at FSU. Lectures are disorganized and useless. Assignments hardly pertain to lectures in class. Rude and degrading. Tests are borderline impossible and dont reflect your knowledge or ability to program. According to TAs and tutors, her view of programming is archaic at best. TAKE GAITROS OR NOT AT ALL FOR COP3014
Don't take her! The programs take forever to do and depending on how picky the TA you can still end up with a bad grade with a working program. Also, her tests are extremely difficult. I would avoid at all costs!
Projects are easy 100s and can be finished within 2 hours of being assigned, exams are quite ridiculous though and feel pointless. Going back, I would have preferred a different teacher.
One of the worst professors I have ever had at FSU. I walked away with an A in the class, but that doesn't change the fact that her lectures are awful, she doesn't give a hoot for her students, and is extremely condescending. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.
She is a terrible teacher. She will not help you if you ask her, she will just tell you to go to a ta and ask them and they are not that helpful either. Her lectures are useless and you don't learn much from them. Most of the people that passed this class are people with prior coding and I was not one of them. Stay far away from this teacher!
She isn't a very good professor. I had no experience with programming before this class but ended up with an A. If you want a professor that reads off slides and nothing else, she is for you. The grades you get are HEAVILY based on how lucky you are in the TA you get. Some take off tons of points for small mistakes, while others only take off a few
Horrible teacher! if you can avoid her, do so!
Tyson is not a really good professor. Attending her lectures does not help you on the project. Her Exams are difficult and ridiculous. Avoid Tyson if you can!!!
Tyson is a horrible teacher. She only lectures off of powerpoint slides. The 6 projects she has you complete or extremely hard and she provides no assistance. Her exams are unbelievable difficult. Not a beginners course for sure. AVOID HER!!!
Quite simple, you will have to put in a TON of work to get a good grade. However, all the necessary resources and tools are available for you to succeed. It's truly up to you. Tyson is an expert and great lecturer, just not helpful at all. Sadly, there's no arguing that she is a tad disrespectful. Exams - tough. Programs- challenging but rewarding
I squeaked by with a C-, even with a massive curve. This class is very discouraging, but the curve helps in the end. Don't try to do the coding projects by yourself, they aren't meant to be done by yourself if you've never had experience. Office hours are always crowded for a good reason. Tests are difficult, and the class is very humbling.
Unhelpful, rude, programs are impossible. Exams are beyond impossible. If you have no prior programming experience, I weep for you. TA's are useless, your grade depends on your TA. My TA took off massive amounts of points for miniscule mistakes, even mistakes that didn't exist (what?). CS isn't FSU's strong point, clearly. Good luck, and god speed.
Ridiculously impossible class. If you've been programming since you were 12, a CS degree at FSU is perfect for you. If not, don't even bother because the CS education here caters completely to people who have years of experience - Ann Tyson herself proves this in her classes. This is evident in her impossible programs and exams. Good luck.
reads line for line from powerpoints and doesn't give any help on the programs.
This woman is absolutely ridiculous. Her poor teaching style and general lack of interest in her students' success is simply appalling. Lecture is a waste of time, do not go! Her voice is so obnoxious and the material being covered rarely pertains to the current programming assignment. Tests are impossible but the programs are not too difficult.
Worst professor Ive ever had at FSU. She has no interest in the students whatsoever. If you get sick or have any issue DONT expect to get a deadline. I was really sick with high fever, couldn't move. Got an excuse and she answered that my excuse was fake, when it was from FSU itself. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR BY ALL MEANS. Grade depends fully on your TA
Wow, what can I say? She is flat out rude, cannot teach, and absolutely horrible with student feedback. Along with her poor communication skills she lacks student compassion and understanding. It makes sense now why the course is so difficult, Tyson is one of the two authors in her required text. The course is awful, and she is awful. AVOID
Terrible teacher. Just as others have said if you do not have prior experience stay away from Tyson. 95% of the teacher assistants can hardly speak english and Tyson moves way to fast for beginners. Unless you can dedicate yourself 100% to this class reconsider taking the course. I dropped my CS major because of her class.
Horrible teacher. Makes class seem almost impossible and doesn't help with programs. Lectures are pointless and don't help. Her voice is incredibly annoying. Exams are impossible and not like the practice exams. AVOID!
doesn't answer questions at all
As others have said, unless you have prior C++ programming, avoid Tyson. If you have to take the class with her, make sure you go to lecture/lab, and read through the book. The TA's will be your only help, as well as the internet.
Absolutely terrible. Just reads off the powerpoints and doesn't explain the material at all. Don't bother asking her for help, she'll just tell you to ask your TA.
I don't know why people say she is so bad. She is a good teacher. The class is hard, but she isn't that bad.
Reads straight off powerpoints, and examples in class aren't very helpful. You can save time by skipping the lecture and just reading the book/look for help online. I'll be the first to say it, google the program descriptions. You'll find 50+ programs on forums, copy/paste sections of them, change names/variables, make it your own. don't be stupid.
If you can avoid taking the class with her, do so. The textbook used (which she wrote) hardly helps and lectures get dull after the first 30 minutes.
Horrible professor. Had known C++ prior to taking this class and the way it was presented to new students was abhorrent. She lacked the patience to help students and made learning an interesting topic convoluted and difficult. AVOID IF POSSIBLE
I had no prior C++ experience before taking this course. Final grades were composed of six programming projects and two exams. Lectures were not mandatory, which was good because they were extremely boring. The text was the most helpful to me. Take with another instructor if possible!
Going to class was pointless. She taught more about how a computer works then how to write a program. The projects are pretty straight forward. Got a B in the class with Ds on the tests and As on the projects.
Do not take this professor, whatever you do. This year is her first year back after 5 years of retirement, and has only taught our class for a matter of two weeks total. Our TA has taken over the class while she's been gone for unknown reasons, and it has been very, very difficult to understand. Please take another professor by all means.
Insane amount of workload and self reliance for a beginner level programming course. Professor does not teach just has TAs lecture on material that is almost impossible to understand unless you have coded for years before. Has you rely on TAs which are extremely harsh and inconsistent graders, who get frustrated if you dont understand something.
WORST PROFESSOR OF MY LIFE!!! I will never take a class from her again. She taught maybe 2 lectures for the first three months of class and had her TAs babble about the rest. Absolutely NO passion for teaching, probably wants to see everyone fail. This is not a class for someone who has never taken programming, even tho thats what its for...
Was not very helpful with students. She recorded her lectures months before the semester and talked so quiet that you couldnt hear what she was saying. The class average for each assignment was always lower than a 60. She gets her graduate student TAs to try and explain instead of talking with her personally.
Probably the worst teacher/professor Ive ever had. Lectures are long and drawn out. Not helpful to students and no set rubric is given before submitting assignments. On the last three assignments I lost 10 points each time due to poor style? Never take a course taught by this woman!
She has lost her care for teaching I think. Lectures are long and completely monotone, she has no respect for her students or leniency for any situation. I got a professional coder to tutor me and was averaging Bs so take that as you want when it comes to her grading. If you can find another professor I suggest it but if you cant its bearable ig
This class was literally insane for an intro class, if you want to get an A on programs you'll have to pray for a TA that is semi-decent and lenient.
First of all she doesn't do any work besides recording the lectures. The TAs run everything in that class for the most part and if you try asking her a question she will give a one word answer and it will most likely be no and you'll receive no help. Go to your TAs with any questions. Make sure to watch her lectures at 2x speed or youll fall asleep
Ann Tyson is one of the worst professors at FSU. She grades nothing and doesn't teach anything herself and relies on the TA's. The class is split so everyone gets varying grades depending on if you get an easy TA. She didn't do one zoom and is super disrespectful to her students. Overall 0/5.
I got stuck with a very harsh TA, I had a friend in the class who had a different TA and they got barely any points off for the exact same things that I got tons taken off for
I'm not sure why there seems to be so many people who don't enjoy professor Tyson. I had her for Programming 1 and had no issues. Yes, the class is hard, but that is not fault of the professor, rather the material. She clearly enjoys programming and teaching, and I feel like I have learned a great deal in the course.
If "uncaring" was an option, I'd click it. I have been having panic attacks daily and have unrelentless medical bills coming for hospital visits and therapy. I had to work during an exam time to make rent, and pay bills. Got a zero on the exam. I understand that I'm an outlier, but I wasn't going to end with a C, so I just dropped and pay it back.
Professor Tyson is very rude and not understanding at all. Don't expect to email her without getting a rude response, doesn't matter the topic.
She was rude in all emails and was very condescending. The video lectures are boring with awful quality. The TA's taught more than she did, and even then it was not enough. I would never recommend this class to anyone.
Would not recommend. Teacher didn't assist in virtually any way, TA's lecture, reply to questions and grade all assignments. There are video lectures available that she posted, although not necessarily helpful. Aloof and standoffish when directly having questions asked by students. Harsh grader that gives impression she doesn't necessarily care.
Tyson just has her recorded videos posted and you're expected to watch them. I signed up for this class thinking it would only be the 50 minute class but really you are supposed to watch 3, 50 minute lecture videos on top of the 50 minute recitation every week. A little intense for an intro class, but I did enjoy some of the coding projects.
She was a nice instructor. Since this was an online class, all lectures were pre-recorded and we could basically go at our own pace. However, I think the TAs did a little more work than she did. We would only go to her office hours for counseling, major/minor questions while we go to the TAs for project/course material help. Grading was picky too.
The TA's in this class are the lifeblood of it. Ann Tyson herself is truly not a good professor at all. The TA's do 90% of the work, with Prof Tyson only lecturing. She is not accessible outside of class for help unless your question is specifically not about how to code. On the up side, she does seem to like the idea of coding, sometimes.
If you are new to programming I recommend NOT taking this teacher! She talks the entire lecture using premade powerpoints that usually just have psuedo code. She does have some program examples but her programming assignments are complicated with a lot of stipulations. I feel like I should of already been experienced in C++ before taking this one.
If you can avoid taking her class, please take anyone else. She is extremely discouraging and wont even take questions during lecture.
She is not a very easy professor to take. She delegates almost all of her grading to her TAs as the programs can be large and take a lot of time to go over. She can come off as very abrasive and uncaring to a lot of people, however I didn't really see her that way. Beware of asking for re-grades on projects!
I would avoid taking this class unless you have prior programming experience unless you want to spend a lot of time studying and rereading the textbook. Professor Tyson was quite nice in person, but over emails can be quite harsh and condescending. She is also hard to reach outside of class so most of the assistance will be through TAs.
This class is organized poorly. The content of the lectures doesn't align with the projects that you will be working on and professor Tyson is unavailable outside of class. She makes the class way too hard for an intro level course that doesn't expect you to have any prior experience with c++.
Took 3353 not 3363 but this course was interesting. Professor Tyson knows the material but does not do a great job at explaining it. I had to teach myself how to do most of the coursework and the assignments were very confusing yet easy. Get ready to ask the TA's lots of questions.
If you have no prior knowledge of programming this class is going to be very difficult for you, Tyson does not go over the basics. Professor Tyson is not understanding for those who are struggling and have less experience. I would not recommend this professor at all and would change my major before considering having her as a professor again.
This was a very difficult class and I have never been happier to end a semester. Tyson was not good at covering the criteria and it is very easy to fall behind. I would not recommend this professor and if you can avoid this class please do.
Professor is unresponsive to emails and is the embodiment of the Karen.
Isn't the most lenient, very harsh grader. Had an error uploading something due to a personal crisis and she wouldn't help me out regardless of me getting 85+ on all her assignments.
Does a poor job of lecturing. Grading split is atrocious; the midterm and final exam are worth 40% of your final grade, which is quite nonsensical given the nature of programming as being an applied skill. Places way too much importance on topics that have little prominence in the corporate world. I love CS, but absolutely avoid Tyson if possible.
I came into this class with background experience in CS and despite her grandstanding on how the professional CS world works she clearly has little to no experience. Assignments are made difficult by arbitrary requirements that you would otherwise never use. Harsh grading, snarky emails (if you can get in touch) and worthless lectures top it off.
Professor Ann Tyson is hands down the worst professor that I have ever had at FSU. Her projects are very lengthy and she grades way too hard. The lectures will not help you very much to get through the projects. She offers little to no help and you will have to rely on the TAs for any assistance.
It stinks that she is the only one who teaches this course required for CS majors. Her lectures are virtually meaningless. Get used to being friends with your TA, they are much more helpful than her. Do NOT ask for a grade change, as she will use it against you by sending a mass email to everyone in the class about you asking.
Professor is meh. Honestly she's not as bad as people say. She truly does care, but her lectures are a bit dull, she is a tough grader, and doesn't have sympathy for re-grades. This class is at first extremely easy but don't be fooled, throughout the semester the difficulty suddenly changes from easy to expert. Don't procrastinate and you'd do fine
Assignments are relatively easy, but I wouldn't bother wasting time showing up to class and just look up tutorials on YouTube. Her lectures are overly complicated and very boring. Exams are easy and open note.
I had to switch out from her class after week 2, she is nothing short of confusing and VERY rude. Have fun reaching her outsideof class because she will NOT answer you, on the first day of class she already yelled at 2 kids in the span of 5 minutes. This was my firsttime learning coding and I was so excited just for her to completely ruin everything
Tyson's class is passable but not enjoyable. She's not very accessible outside of class, and the grading is harsh. CGS3465 itself is not very difficult if you watch lectures though. Before submitting big projects, I'd recommend going to office hours /recitations and asking TAs if they can give any advice on improving your structure/formatting.
Hot take, I really enjoyed taking her class in Fall 22, I also took her CIS3250 class this semester. She teaches off the slides, but the slides are available for further review on Canvas. The content gets harder as you go on, but it is very manageable as long as you prioritize the projects with your time. An A is very manageable if you try hard.
CS majors, do not go to this class with Tyson, it is a waste of time. You are graded by 2 papers and 2 tests. The tests are online, at home, no honorlock. Very easy. Do something better with your time.
Terrible professor that only reads off of PowerPoint slides. She sends rude emails when asked for help, so TAs are your lifeline in this class and often have to pick up Tyson's slack. You will have to teach yourself everything, so this class is unnecessarily difficult for an intro class and made several students in my section drop it.
