VERY interesting if you are interested in history/art. This has been my favorite class at UCSD so far. She's also been really helpful, excellent communication skills, and is just a nice person period. Her sarcasm is hilarious.
I loved her, she was adorable. Interesting class, I'm not even into art history (I was taking it for GE) but I really enjoyed this class. It was also very easy, I highly recommend this professor.
Prof. Woods was great! She was clear, her lectures were interesting, and she was helpful outside of class. She responds to your emails quickly and is available after lecture if you have any questions. Her exams were easy (the final wasn't cumulative and was worth just as much as the midterm). My only complaint is that the paper prompt was unclear
Can’t be praised highly enough, clearly a great teacher and person in general. Extremely accessible, friends and I often spoke with her before and after class. Tests are very fair, lecture is a pleasure to attend and I agree the short paper prompt is open for interpretation. Unfortunately grading is up to the TA so AVOID the mentally unstable Moria

I loved her! she knew her stuff and made everything relevant and interesting. i highly recommend taking her even if it is for a GE.
Ann Woods is fantastic. She is so clear and she knows exactly what she is talking about. She gives really interesting knowlegde of paintings rather than the obvious and she made me want to be an art his major. Take her!!! However she is not super easy, lots of studying for the midterm and final and one essay (but a short/fun one).
Woods is truly an expert art historian. Her lectures are very interesting and thorough. It was a tough ride with her though--she expects her students' best. Woods is approachable and helpful to those seeking knowledge. Don't expect an easy A. But she was not very clear on instructions for writing papers. Make sure you hound her for exact details.
Lovely woman. Lectures always caught my attention even though I'd never in my life had an interest in gothic architecture. Midterm and final are essentially, everything presented to you in lecture. Paper wasn't graded too harshly either. Take her!
Professor Woods was a really nice person, but her lectures didn't really hold my attention. She's a bit tough, but I suppose if you study and write essays the way she instructs to, you'll do fine. I didn't study until the days before the exams and missed a few classes but still got a B+. Woods is a decent professor, I definitely recommend her.
She is so knowledgeable in art history and she can lecture for hours straight without even glancing at her notes. She knows EVERYTHING off the top of her head and it's so obvious that she appreciates art and is so fascinated by it. Even if lectures aren't mandatory, it saves you a lot of time when you study for your midterm/final. I loved this clas
Extremely smart, engaging, and passionate about art. Textbook is unnecessary if you go to lecture and take good notes. There aren't any surprises on the midterm and the essay prompt is fun (my first trip to Balboa!). Definately attend lecture - she tells you everything you need to know about the exams. One of the best professors I've taken here.
Professor Woods is great and loves what she teaches and lectures in a style that is easy to take notes on. The reading isn't mandatory but helps when studying. Her tests are very fair and you have to know your stuff.
Prof Woods is really interested in art history, and it shows. She gets really excited in lecture, and gives you multiple viewpoints of any topic. Book is kinda useless, except for reviewing pictures, but this class is pretty easy, and the tests are fair
I've had her for 3 art history classes, she's great. Tests are very straight forward, I never bought the book for any of her classes, you don't need to as as long as you go to all the lectures and take good notes. She's also really helpful if you have any questions.
Ann Woods is one of the best professors that I've had at UCSD so far. She loves what she teaches, and really puts in the effort to extend that knowledge to her students. Taking this class has encouraged me to get a minor in art history! =) Ann Woods = All around coolness, take her classes if you can!
Great professor! She enjoys what she teaches. Midterm and final are nothing unexpected. Very fair and the class is interesting. I would recommend taking this professor.
This class was like an interesting movie -I couldn't wait for the next part. The TA's seemed really off in terms of their expectations - we would hear one thing in class and another in discussion. Woods is very well informed and has great style. My 2nd class with her and want 2 take more.
Very interesting subject and teacher was knowledgeable. Good lectures, take notes & write as much as you can on the test essay questions. Reader's graded tough! Don't buy the book, use library reserve. Otherwise, very easy and intriguing class.
This is a one day a week course and super simple. Useful in that you learn how to research and write art history papers.Ms. Woods usually let us out a few hours early.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. knowledgeable and helpful and nice and awesome. basically just write down whatever she says about the work of art in lecture and write that on the tests.
I took Ann for VIS 23 and her Egyptian art class. She is amazing!! I seriously cannot express how fun and relaxed she is. She is so kind and easy to approach, I wish she taught more classes! She is an amazing lecturer and makes class really enjoyable. Her VIS 23 class is really easy and the Egypt class is easy, too but I learned SO MUCH! I love her
I had her for Vis 20/128a/23 and I absolutely love her both in the lecture setting and in a more intimate 20-student class setting. She enjoys teaching art history and it shows. As long as you have good memorization skills and pay attention during lecture, you'll be fine. Most of her midterms/finals are straight from lecture notes. Take her class!!
SHE IS WONDERFUL! Her lectures are clear and consistently interesting. I'm not even an art history major and I have taken 3 classes taught by her. Her exams are not difficult. She is more interested in you learning and enjoying the subject rather than testing you to death. She is inspiring! My favorite UCSD professor, and I am a biology major.
Love Prof. Woods! Knows her stuff, doesn't use notes when lecturing! That said, no podcasts or slides posted so MUST go to class to do well. 1 midterm & final, all essays. Makes it easy to understand, even for non-art history majors. One of my favorite professors at UCSD!
Easy A. Just go to lecture and take notes. You don't need to write down everything she says, just the most important things like the style or political/religious message of a particular artwork. She is super friendly and wants you to do well. If you just study your notes you'll ace the class. However, if you can't memorize, I wouldn't recommend
Excellent lecturer and very smart. Explains chronologically and clearly, so you know exactly what she's talking about. Midterm, essay, final, and she tells you what to study. Going to class and taking notes will help. She is fun and and easy going, take her even if you are not an AH major. You will enjoy it! Hope to take her again.
Professor Woods is very boring, but the class is fairly easy if you attend lecture and take notes. Just make sure you know your artworks and can identify them and you'll get a good grade without much effort. Your TA can really be helpful. Also be prepared to visit an art museum for a take-home paper.
My absolute favorite professor I've taken so far. Her lectures are interesting and she genuinely cares about her students. She's intelligent, kind, and knowledgeable about her field. If you have a chance, you must take her!
Professor Woods is so, so interesting! Her lectures are clear so you don't need to read the textbook. The hardest assignment is a 3 page long double spaced essay lol. She basically inspired me to be a art history major.
She was really nice and really clear. She grades pretty easily, and while there's a lot of memorizing, it's not too bad. She makes jokes, and she even pointed out the random naked couple in a tapestry, which was funny. I would recommend taking her.
She is an amazing professor. You will definitely glad to attend all of her lectures. I will take her class again!
Loved this class so much! Professor Woods gave lectures with so much passion that it was hard not to fall in love with the subject. Thanks to Professor Woods I now have an interest in art history and plan on taking another vis course soon.
Class was really easy, if you attend every lecture and take notes you'll get an A without a problem. If you don't remember to pay attention in discussion during the reviews and it's still an easy A. Don't worry about the writing it's not really graded on your writing style.
Really easy class if you attend lectures regularly and take notes. There is a lot of memorization, which is to be expected. She basically tells you what is going to be on the midterm and final so it isn't hard to pass this class. Prof. Woods is an amazing lecturer and you can tell she is passionate about what she teaches!
Prof. Woods is the best! Her lectures are interesting and she's very nice! Whenever I had a question for her I'd just pop by her right after class and she'd gladly answer my question! Definitely take her! HOWEVER, if you plan on not attending it's gonna be a little hard, because everything in the exams is based on what she says in class. Easy A.
Professor Woods is really amazing! 10/10! Her lectures are really interesting, she provides context for each art piece studied and provides stories for the pieces which I think helps you remember them. The class is a lot of memorizing but if you attend lecture and make flashcards it isn't that bad. Discussion is mandatory but lecture is not.
The lectures are very helpful and she expects you to know concepts that are only available from her lectures. The exams are fair and it does not take very long to study for them. The hardest part of the course was finding a museum to go to for writing the museum paper. Her lectures are very interesting and she is very passionate about art.
Favorite class and professor fall quarter, and arguably my whole year. She is so clear and her voice is so calming. The subject was very interesting and she presents it in a way that is easy to write down in lecture. She only speaks and that may be difficult to adjust to at first but it is well worth the effort.
She knows what she is talking about and loves the material. You must go to lectures because she just talks at you for the full 50 minutes and if you miss that, you'll miss hundreds of years of history. If you study, you'll pass. Just put in the time. Also I took this at 8 AM and that made it worse.
Professor Woods is amazing! This is the first time I took art history and she really inspired me a lot. She sticks to the syllabus and so her lecture is clearly structured. Tests are easy as long as you participate in class. I really like her and her lectures, definitely consider take her again
Professor Woods is so passionate about what she does and is an amazing lecturer. I enjoyed the subject way more than I thought I would and it was an extremely interesting course. Key to success is to take notes during lecture. That's genuinely it. Please don't dip on lecture. I think you'll find like I did that lecture with her is fun anyway.
Your grading depends on your TA but the lecture provide everything you need. Don't bother buying the textbook unless you plan to ditch class all the time.
Woods' lectures are literally all you need to pass the class. Not only does she say everything you need for the tests, but she is so engaging with jokes and fun facts. Would definitely recommend but just don't dip her lectures. Oh and your grade depends mostly on your TA.
Dr. Woods is so knowledgeable and passionate about art history. Her lecture are so interesting and you will definitely learn a lot! Exams are also easy and very representative of what she says in class. Great class!
Dr. Woods is one of those people who not only has a passion for Art History but also for teaching itself. She makes Art History so interesting because of the way she presents it during lectures. She is one of the best professors that you will ever have at UCSD!
She gives amazing lectures that are super interesting and captivating. Even towards the end of the semester, most people show up to a class that does not have mandatory attendance. She has great enthusiasm for the subject and explains the art pieces and their backgrounds super well. I would definitely take her again.
She is an amazing professor! Her lecture is so inspiring and well structured. I am more confident with my interest in art history after taking her class. Please take her!! You can learn so much from this class!!!!!!
I loved Professor Woods!!! She is wholesome and enthusiastic and definitely knows what she's talking about. Lectures aren't mandatory but sections are; I think I only went to about 6 lectures the whole quarter, BUT most of the content is in the textbook so I caught up with that. Tests are very straightforward and the paper is simple. Very easy A:)
Memorization is key in this class 100%
Basically your class grade revolves around your test scores, but if you study enough the tests aren't too bad. Prof. Woods is a great lecturer & seems so sweet. Lectures are not mandatory (recorded on zoom) but you do get points for going to discussion. My discussion was just the TA repeating the lecture material. Def recommend, especially for a GE
Professor Woods made learning art history very enjoyable and understandable. Make sure to attend every lecture, as all the stuff she covers is free reign to be on the final. You don't necessarily need the textbook (unless you want to read more into it) and all the things on the syllabus will be on the midterm and final.
Professor Woods truly makes art history so interesting. When I took ap art history, I hated it but only with Professor Woods did I realize how intriguing art history really is. I love professor Woods, she was so sweet and caring and it was clear throughout the course that she deeply cares for her students. Her lectures are always engaging and deep!
Professor Woods is an amazing professor! Her lectures are very interesting and really gave me a new perspective on art and history. She is extremely knowledgable and cares a lot about her students. The class is graded on 2 exams and participation decided by a TA. However, the exams are fairly easy, just make sure to take notes and go to lecture!
Love her so much, she really made the class for me and honestly for all of the students as well. Very sweet, approachable, soft spoken, actually interested in the subject matter so it makes you want to go to class. Didn't have to read the book and the TAs made a discord with lots of helpful info
Although I am not one who is interested in Art history, Professor Woods was an amazing lecturer and made the material interesting to learn. I personally did not need the textbook because everything was covered in her lectures. She is very detailed in her explanations of each art piece, and the tests were reflective of the material in lecture.
Everything expected in the Exams are went over clearly in the lectures. Prof Woods is an eloquent lecturer! She has passion in the subject which naturally helps teach the material. Very caring and genuine. Go to lectures and take notes and that is all you need for the Exams. Section also helped a lot for clarification, but depends on TA quality.
Very enjoyable lectures, they made me actually look forward to going to class. The exams were really straight forward and based exactly on the lectures. If you take notes and memorize the time period and significance of the art pieces she discusses in lecture, you'll definitely get an A.
I'm not an art major, but I love art. Woods has a very informative way of giving her lectures that make you feel like you're listening to a story through the ages. If I have the chance to take another one of her classes I will for sure! Your grade rests on two tests and participation though, so it's good to have good study habits!
I love art history and being in Professor Woods's class just elevated that! She is clearly very passionate about what she teaches, and her lectures are clear and get to the point. The midterm and the final were reflective of what was taught in class, so be sure to pay attention and take notes!
Just a midterm and a final is your grade. LOTS of memorization for this class, there's no homework but its just a ton of memorizing for the midterm and final. Not too hard though, just be prepared to mindlessly study a week before the test and you'll be fine. Otherwise, very easy class and very nice teacher.
She is a great professor! I took this course as a GE and it was interesting and little to no work, just some memorization. Midterm and non-cumulative final, extremely fair and lenient grading. She's passionate about art history and very caring, so I really enjoyed lectures as a change from my typical major courses.
Honestly the most enjoyable class I've ever taken. Her lectures are very enjoyable and you can clearly tell she's passionate about what she's teaching. The exams are based exactly on what she talks about in lectures, so as long as you study the monuments in the syllabus/lectures you'll 100% get an A. I gained an entirely new appreciation for art.
Prof Woods was a great lecturer to have! She is obviously passionate about her subject and seems to really want us to learn with her. She moves quite quickly but if you pay attention in lectures (which are podcasted also) it should be fine. The class is memorization based so it isn't for everyone but it makes studying pretty easy.
Prof Woods is an incredibly good lecturer. It's clear that she's super passionate about the subject. My only criticism would be that the tests are worth a good portion of the final grade. The midterm was worth 40% and the final was 45%. However, as long as you study the material, it should be an easy A. The lectures are podcasted as well.
I had already taken AP art history prior to taking this class and my teacher then had been awful. Professor Woods was the absolute sweetest and made art history so interesting to the point it made me want to pursue it. Definitely would recommend!
Ann Woods is an amazing lecturer. Class isn't mandatory, but she tells you everything you need to know during lecture. Her lectures are so passionate and far from boring.
Incredible lectures. I was hesitant to learn about art history (of all things), but I learned so much from Professor Woods. Taking lecture notes and reviewing syllabus should give easy A's on midterm and final. VIS20 was my favorite class this quarter and anyone who needs an art requirement should take her class.
The class was essentially just the midterm and final, both of which were exactly what you'd expect. If you know the syllabus, you'll easily get an A. Easy, low stress class even if the lectures could be boring.
Professor Woods is great! Took her for a GE. She is a great lecturer, gives concise and to the point lectures. Grade is only based on a midterm and final but questions are super straightforward and based directly on lecture material. If you keep up with lectures, you will do great with minimal effort.
Prof. Woods is a good instructor but don't expect to see or chat with her much. Most of your interaction is done with your TA and unlike the lectures, the discussion sessions are for credit so you will want to attend. Don't expect to get an easy A in this class it requires A LOT of studying but if you pay attention in lectures you will do fine.
Great professor and easy class but be ready to take notes during lectures
Professor Woods is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about art history, but it was hard to enjoy this class since the exams all depended on memorizing EVERYTHING. Way too much study time for a GenEd.
Not a lot of reading and the textbook isn't *really* necessary, but you need to know all of the information on the syllabus for the exams. One midterm, one final. Was MCQ due to strikes, but may differ in the future. I fell asleep a couple of times, but she records lectures and uploads them.
Not accommodating with OSD. Test heavy class and need to take detailed notes. Would not recommend
Prof Woods is really sweet and passionate about art. Lectures weren't mandatory and recorded. Grade is mainly based on section attendance and one paper which was enjoyable because it involved going to a museum, exams (one midterm one final) were straightforward and based on the syllabus and general points made in lectures. Took for GE
Unnecessary amount of information given in class. Impossible to remember so many things that will be testes on. Do not take if you have troubles memorizing fine details.
I took this class as an 8am and I never skipped any of her lectures. She was always very passionate during her lectures. Overall a very fun class and her grading was very considerate. Would recommend this class 100%.
The lectures are necessary for tests. Although attendance is technically mandatory, all lectures are uploaded in podcast form on Canvas. The only grades are a quick presentation in section, one midterm, one final, and a 2-3 page paper which requires you to go to a museum. There is a textbook, but it is unnecessary. Prof. Woods is knowledgeable.
Super simple and easy. Interesting class, lectures are uploaded on canvas and you should watch them to pass your midterm and final. It was a memorization game to me. Only graded by 4 things, One paper, Midterm, and Final, and discussion participation (2 minute presentation). Professor Woods is so sweet!
Woods' lectures were really interesting and they are all posted on podcast. Not much homework but I recommend using flashcards for memorization. The textbook is not necessary imo.
Prof. Woods is a sensational lecturer, if you are able to take intentional notes during her lectures, you will have yourself a study guide that has everything you need to know for the class's midterm and final. I think the textbook is a good tool, but by no means mandatory to have ($$$). TLDR, awesome professor, awesome TAs, awesome curriculum.
Amazing lectures! Super interesting every time. Prof Woods is so sweet and definitely knowledgeable. Textbook is NOT necessary, didn't use it once. Lectures are recorded. Only graded by a Midterm, a Final, and a Paper, which I thought were easy and the paper was fun, as you were asked to go visit an actual art museum. A great class and professor.
Professor Woods is an amazing lecturer, really enjoyed this class! Discussions are mandatory, grade depends on 1 midterm, 1 paper, and 1 final. Assigned to go to an art museum for the research paper, which was fun! Exams were straightforward, just memorize info from lectures (names, period of art, history behind painting).
Professor Woods is a very good lecturer and is very clear in explaining all the information. Midterm and final is almost 80% of the grade and it is based on lecture. Just listen to the lecture and write notes, and you will pass this class easily.
Professor Woods is an excellent professor! The class is based on several factors: section attendance, midterm, paper, and final. Using the textbook is unnecessary; however, you must pay close attention and memorize the lecture details. Your instructional assistant will grade everything. Overall, very interesting and fun!
I love Prof Woods so much, she's such an icon. She's super sweet and a big expert on the material. There's a lot of memorization that goes into the class and that's definitely the biggest challenge, but making flashcards and going over your notes is the best way to study. The class is graded by very few things, but it's really not bad at all.
Do not take VIS20 w/ Woods if you: a) are a non-major or b) do not like memorisation. Everything is podcasted and textbook is not needed. Graded on non-cumulative final, midterm, DI attendance, and 3-page paper. I took this as a GE and it was way harder than I expected and took a lot of my time due to the dense amount of memorisation involved.
Only have one paper a midterm and a final, very easy don't have to attend class and its pretty interesting if you pay attention. she's really nice when if you ever talk to her and she also gets straight to the material.
Professor Woods is the best. She's so passionate about the class and knows a lot about the material. I will say I was under the impression that this is the “easy GE”; that was not the case. Both tests rely on memorizing around 100 art pieces and their contexts. I was really interested, but I spent more time studying for this class than stem ones.
I took this class for my fine art ge and it was one of the easiest classes I've taken. There is 1 midterm and 1 final with 10-15 identification questions (name, artist, time period), 4 short answer questions, and 1 essay question comparing 2 works. As long as you attend lectures or watch the podcasts (take notes!) you will pass this class easily.
Very lecture heavy - pay attention! No homework other than an easy, short paper about where you have to go to a museum for it (honestly very fun). Very interesting and easy class with a kind and understanding group of TA's!
Prof Woods is THE GOAT. Passionate, knowledgeable in her field, and hilariousss- she had the whole lecture hall laughing at certain points. We had a midterm, a paper, and a final test. If you pay attention in lecture (I didn't even take notes) and spend only a few hours prior to each test learning the names/periods of the required artworks u good.
I loved taking this class with Professor Woods. Although attendance isn't ‘mandatory', there's no recording so you have to attend lecture to get the information. She is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about her field which absolutely translates in her lectures. I wish she was teaching another class this year so I could take it!
She's a really great lecturer, they are consistently interesting and very informative. I would say that I missed I think two lectures where she covered something that I didn't mention in my essay and that did cause me to fail the midterm, so if you miss lectures you HAVE to make sure to read the textbook.
pretty easy GE.just 1 midterm,1 final and 1 paper on an art piece.lectures were informative so opt out of the textbook unless TA requires it or something. Can just watch the recorded lectures at 3x to save some time, but make sure not to procrastinate or you'll be watching 5 weeks of lectures before finals.Easy if you dont fall behind and do the work
Professor Woods is incredibly passionate about her classes and it shows in the way she lectures. I found lectures very interesting despite being the 8am class...lots of memorization and concepts but class was pretty light overall. One essay, midterm, final, and discussion section makes up your grade
Basically if you're ok with memorization, this class should be relatively easy, and I actually enjoyed it for the most part. The hardest part about this class is just the exams because there's a lot of artworks to memorize. All the information needed for the exams was in the lectures, so make sure you tune in and take good notes.
Such an amazing professor, she made the content interesting and could make everyone laugh. The final itself isn't cumulative, but there is a decent amount of memorization required. The grading mainly depends on your TA, and be sure to at least watch every lecture podcast because so much of the material is covered in each one.
If you are not an art history major, I would not suggest you to take the class. It requires a lot of memorizations and understanding of artwork. If you are not interested in any art, this is a tough class. It is not easy at all. Your main grade is up to your final and the midterm exams. your whole grade is up to your TA btw.
if you're good with memorization and have at least a little interest in the subject, i'd rec this class. it would be hard to do well otherwise. make sure to watch/go to lecs and take good detailed notes, that's all the exams are based off of.
