There's up to a 5% curve if you answer all bonus clicker questions correctly. Tests are graded well, lots of partial credit available (thank goodness). There are 6 homework assignments, 3 of which were completion grades and 3 were accuracy. Best advice I can give: Do practice problems from each chapter out of textbook. Memorize mechanisms early.
I've taken 341 with 2 other professors at CSU and it wasn't until Dr. Allen's class that I was finally able to pass ochem. Ochem is REALLY HARD but Dr. Allen holds study sessions twiceweek and is helpful during office hours. Definitely take her if you have any hope of passing these classes and GO TO THE STUDY SESSIONS!
Dr. Allen was amazing I honestly can't believe this was her first year teaching. Tons of extra credit with clicker points and a bonus on every test. She holds 2 study sessions a week where she gives you problems to help you learn. Incredibly helpful in her office hours also. Super nice lady who has helped me get an A in both semesters of Ochem.
Great professor. She does everything she can to help you understand the material. With that being said, it's ochem, so it's still a really hard class.
Despite the fact that ochem is an extremely difficult subject, she is probably the best professor at CSU for this class.. She is helpful, but the material is still tough. I had a really hard time personally but I took advantage of her help and used Clutch prep to help me better understand the material. Definitely take her!
Fantastic teacher. This was my second time around OChem and she is great at teaching this difficult material in a way that every student can understand. She is also very available to help for office hours, appointments, etc. and there are plenty of ways to get extra help and practice.
Amazing lecturer, yes she is difficult but hey college isn't supposed to be easy.
Dr. Allen is a great professor and willing to help students be successful in her class. She is widely available outside of class for extra help and even holds group help sessions which were really helpful. If you are willing to put in the time and effort into the class you will pass with a good grade guaranteed!
She gives you the information in a very accessible way, but you have to take advantage of that and really put effort in,
Professor Allen is the best professor I've taken at CSU, and I think we're very lucky to have her here. She is an excellent lecturer, and her lectures are consistent in pace and overall structure which made studying for the exams sig. easier. Rewrite her lecture notes several times and do all of her lecture problems, they're the best way to an A.
By far the best professor I have had here at CSU! Her lectures are organized, clear, and evenly paced. If you have trouble understanding something, she is available outside of class, and she's really good at explaining things in different ways. She posts tons of resources and practice problems, so make sure you do them! She grades fairly.
Allen is a decent teacher, but goes through her lectures very fast. She is obviously irritated when students ask questions in class, and answers them very vaguely. For this reason I have never gone to her office hours. She also does very easy problems in class, but puts hard practice problems on quizzes and tests so you are left wondering wtf to do
Dr. Allen is a great professor! She is very good at explaining things in her lectures and outside class. She goes quickly, but that's because there's a lot of information to learn. You MUST pay attention during lecture to do well, and take advantage of the copious amounts of extra practice she provides. She's also very accessible outside of class!
CHEM 341 has so far been the hardest class I have taken. Dr. Allen is a fantastic professor, but be prepared to spend a lot of time studying. Even though she goes fast through her lectures, there are many resources and practice problems available. The optional recitations are extremely helpful, and I would also recommend taking advantage of these.
I took Dr. Allen's CHEM 341 class, and I had to withdraw within the first month because I was so lost! She lectured very quickly, skipping over many important details and was frustrated when students didn't understand. Don't waste your money, I took CHEM 341 with a better professor and got an A.
Dr. Allen makes Organic Chemistry do-able. She gives many resources to succeed and if you put in the time you will do well
Ochem is super tough but she gives you so much material to do on your own time that, if you do it, it's hard not to pass. That said, it will take a lot of time and effort. She's very organized and sets you up to succeed. My only issue with her is she's super condescending, even to those who try hard, which is why I avoided office hours.
Dr. Allen has not been pleasing to work with this far. In office hours Dr. Allen has been disrespectful, rude, and condescending to her students and offers hand-waving answers to questions proposed. Though I have worked diligently through the practice problems before the exams, I still struggle and do not feel comfortable talking to Dr. Allen.
Dr. Allen is fantastic. She gives really good feedback, and shes really accessible during office hours. Sure, she may be intimidating, but I would not go as far as to call her condescending. She knows her stuff really well and is more than willing to help you if she sees that youre willing to put in the effort. By far, best prof Ive had so far.
Put the effort and you'll do fine. Dr. Allen is fast so make sure to rewatch her lectures online. I thought gen chem was worse.
She is a good teacher compared to other chemistry teachers at CSU. Her tests are hard, and you need to take a lot of time to prepare for them. She's socially awkward in her office hours, but she is nice and will do a good job of explaining what you ask.
Every time I talked to professor Allen she was extremely rude, cold and seemed like she didn't care. She also makes assumptions right away and is just overall a rude person and doesn't care about her students in any way. If you ask her a question she looks at you with cold eyes and doesn't even answer the question fully.
Dr. Allen is fantastic. Yeah, she can be intimidating, but only if you approach her without trying the problems first and really working through them. She respects students who work hard and aren't in it for the easy A. If you work hard, pay attention and go to office hours, you'll be fine. She's really nice if you show her you care about the class
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. There is so much to do. At first, it was super easy then suddenly it was extremely hard. She gives you a lot of resources to do outside of class. During lecture, everything seems to make sense (she is good at teaching lectures) but if you go into her office hours she gives you no respect and is rude.
"All-right good morning everyone - I'm ready to get started - aaaah - problem set is e'out on canvas - aaaah - today we're learning abe'out carbonyl chemistry - any questions or concerns from you guys - all-right, let's begin."
Dr. Allen is really great. She may come off as condescending to some, but you honestly don't even have to interact with her if you don't want to. She gives you SO many resources and has TA's and other knowledgeable students do group studies/weekly review sessions/tutoring. So there are plenty of help options.
Anna Allen is by far the most condescending and cold professor I have ever had. You show up to her lectures and at the start of them she always yells GOOD MORNING EVERYBODY IT'S JUST A NORMAL WEDNESDAY and my day is ruined. She zooms through her lectures, and then gives easy practice problems that don't reflect the difficulty of other assignments.
Seriously the best professor I have ever had. She gives so many resources and is so helpful during office hours. If you show that youve been trying and working hard, she is very willing to help. Definitely take her class over any of the other o-chem professors. The rest of them are terrible at teaching.
Fantastic professor. Makes good jokes and cares about her students.
the best teacher i ever had. i hated chemistry until i met her and am now in grad school for organic. she can seem condescending in class when asked questions, is actually just excited about the material and wants to get through all of it in time. ask her well-thought out questions outside of class instead. exam averages high 70s. she's a goddess.
Professor Allen was overall a good professor. Organic chemistry is the hardest course I have ever taken. This course is mostly based off your exam grades and weekly quiz grades. This is not an easy course and if you don't study you will fail. Professor Allen does curve the class if needed and her lectures are not bad at all!
Use every resource provided and you cannot go wrong. Don't buy the textbooks, but maybe by the model kit for the first semester.
"Good morning everybody" Good teacher, hard to tolerate on an individual basis - exercises a complete lack of respect for her students who want to learn and improve in her class.
Dr. Allen was a good professor. She definitely goes a little too fast at times in lecture, but she records them, so you can go back and re-watch for anything you missed. Biggest downside to the class is that the daily problems and the in-class work is significantly easier than the tests, so you have to do a lot of it to be prepared.
Dr. Allen was a really good professor. She was very helpful in office hours and is very approachable. She cares about the students and realizes that organic chemistry can be a tough class, so gives a LOT of resources to help get you through. If you take advantage of those resources, youll be fine. And her lectures are funny.
Gives a lot of busy work before tests and is unwilling to answer questions. Very rude during office hours, she's here for research not to see students succeed.
Anna Allen is your best chance at passing Organic Chemistry. If you don't pass her class, it is not due to lack of effort on her part. She provides helpful resources, is available outside of class, and genuinely wants her students to learn. You get EXACTLY what you put in. Ask her direct questions in, don't waste her time and you'll be ok.
Dr. Allen can come off as intimidating, but shes just a quiet, reserved person and has her own battles to fight. She is very available to help and is passionate about ochem. You may have to give up weekend fun and leisure to succeed, but if you go to office hours and learn the principle behind mechanisms, you can do well. Do the lecture problems!
O Chem is not an easy class and Dr. Allen definitely knows her stuff. In one on one interaction she comes off a little annoyed with your questions. She also does not accept any sort of excuse for late problem sets. She is, however, very clear in her lectures and is upfront about how much you need to study.
Dr. Allen is the best chemistry professor I have ever had. She makes you work very hard for good grades, but gives a lot of extra, voluntary homework and notes. It is best to print out her slides and bring colored pens to help keep up with her. Exams are very hard, but there are many options to seek help either from her or her assistants.
Dr. Allen is the best chemistry professor I have ever had. She makes you work very hard for good grades, but gives a lot of extra, voluntary homework and notes. It is best to print out her slides and bring colored pens to help keep up with her. Exams are very hard, though she makes it easy for you to get help with her or her assistants.
Dr. Allen is a great professor but doesnt go easy, her exams are difficult but she tells you everything you need to know. You cant go in thinking youll get an A without doing all of the extra resources she provides study hard and you will do well no excuses
She goes so fast that its hard to understand one subject before she moves on to the next. Tests are extremely difficult. Lots of studying.
as good of a teacher as possible for organic chemistry
Dr. Allen gets better every semester. She is very willing to help you, and provides a million practice problems, plus workshops and study groups, so if you use all the resources, its really hard to fail. She goes a little fast in lectures, but she records them & printing the slides helps. Dont take this class with any other professor, shes great
Anna is the best professor possible for O-Chem. The class itself is extremely difficult, but she provides a huge amount of extra resources and extra credit opportunities. You definitely have to work hard for a good grade, but as long as you put in the effort it isn't too bad!
Shes very good at lecturing but the information she gives is too much and her tests are very hard with little to no multiple choice. I recommend a tutor
O-Chem is just a really hard class. The key to doing well is just doing insane amounts of practice problems, which takes a lot of time. She's great because she gives you a set of practice problems to do after every lecture. She moves fast, but she's good about recording lectures every time. Rewatch, do practice problems, succeed.
Makes chemistry a little more relatable. Is good at answering questions and giving feedback. Chemistry is hard but she made it a little easier. Hard exams though.
Dr. Allen definitely knows her stuff and is pretty funny. However she teaches so fast its hard to keep up before she starts teaching something else. The classes are recorded and I recommend rewatching in order to pause and learn at a slower pace. She is better then the other ochem professors tho. Ochem is a lot of work no matter who teaches.
I really liked Dr. Allen. Organic chemistry is hard no matter who is teaching the class and people tend to blame the professor more than themselves for not studying enough. You MUST MUST study a lot for this class, do practice problems, and ask questions. Dr. Allen gives you all the material you need to do well in the course, you need to use it.
Dr Allen runs through material way too quickly, and decided to shove in more exams than we actually had time for, so we had to have an additional 1 hour exam in class. You also have to pay for a textbook that you'll only use to do homework that's barely related to the exam problems.
Dr. Allen uses class time efficiently and is excellent about answering questions, both in class and out. She provides many extra opportunities and resources for additional practice if you need it (I definitely did) and I think her exams were a clear reflection of the content covered in class. She definitely made organic chemistry less intimidating.
Really not a pleasant teacher
Ochem is hard, so treat it with respect. Dr. Allen gives excellent lectures that help you to understand the inherently hard course. If you do not go to class, you will not pass, period. Dr. Allen is an excellent professor, and I would not have wanted to take this class with any other person.
This was my second time taking Organic Chem at CSU. I hate chemistry but after switching professors and taking Dr. Allen, things really changed. Her teaching style is wayyyy better then the person I had before, (no offense). She doesn't talk too fast, she keeps it clear and simple. I finally passed O-chem! Take this professor!!!
While Dr. Allen is a very competent organic chemist, her teaching skills are dreadful. She appears annoyed and rude when you ask her questions and is unwilling to help students who might be struggling. Her homework is nothing short of unfair, 25 extremely difficult questions with only 3 attempts, and only 2 for credit. Would not recommend.
Dr. Allen exceptional professor. You immediately realize how much effort she put into the organization/presentation of material...A LOT! Organic Chemistry is notoriously challenging. Dr. Allen offers a systematic approach that works every time. Do EVERYTHING she makes available for practice you'll get the coveted "A". Use the TAs too. PRACTICE!
Dr. Allen can be very condescending when you attend her office hours. But over time, she notices what students are participating and who doesnt. She is very reserved but isnt the best professor. She has an old school way of teaching but it becomes bearable after the first exam. She gives you a lot of resources but makes the exams very difficult.
Dr. Allen teaches O chem in a way that anyone can understand. Lectures move really fast so print the slides for notes--it really helps. She makes the tests hard, but she gives you all the resources you need to be successful. Above all, do the practice problems; they aren't required but they are key to getting that A.
Dr. Allen was my best professor during my first fully online semester. She is very clear in her lectures and problem solving activities. I was struggling a lot in Organic Chemistry and she always helped me without making me feel like I was bothering her. Listen to lectures before the problem solving activities and attend those activities!
Maybe in an in-person format Dr. Allen would excel, but her class online asked too much. She assigns lectures, pre-recorded from the previous in-person years (less work for her and it shows) that go well over the class time. Her exams are unfair and she doesn't adequately cover material needed to succeed on later exams. If you have her, good luck!
I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt since I did take this class during a pandemic, but she has NO MERCY. She grades her tests so unfairly, and anytime you ask her for help she would explain things in the same way that didn't make sense. Then, she would get annoyed and brush you off onto the TA or the tutors. Worse class I've ever taken.
By far the worst class I have ever taken. Dr. Allen is very proficient in her subject, but is very condescending to questions. I think that she forgets not everyone has a degree in Ochem. She grades ridiculously hard, and they only chances you have of passing the class is doing well on tests. If you have her good luck!
Professor Allen was disliked by many but she was my favorite chemistry teacher in all of college. I have friends with other professors and professor Allen is the best choice by far. She makes the material easy and simple to learn compared to other professors! Go to class and you'll do well.
Prepare yourself to feel like an idiot. Dr. Allen has a unique personality that comes off as rude and demeaning. Her lectures are okay, but the examples provided are very simple in comparison to what is asked on exams. The exam questions are pretty rough. I would take this class with ANY other professor. Worst professor I have ever had at CSU.
Dr. Allen knows chemistry and can explain it on a level that can be understood without having a doctorate. The content is still difficult and if you want to do well do extra practice. The homework is minimal, but she provides a bunch of extra worksheets. She is fair and effective.
Orgo just sucks, Dr. Allen is good for such a hard subject. Just pay attention to her and go to office hours after class to ask questions. If you want to pass do the worksheets, extra credit, and have the powerpoints pre-printed. Allen is going to be the least of your worries. She offers plenty of opportunities to help you and she is very nice.
Dr. Allen was ok. She is brilliant and very thorough in her lectures, but it feels like she is cramming everything into your brain without much time to truly understand. Tests are difficult, but if you study, practice, and pay attention you can do well. You will get behind FAST if you don't go to class, she covers tons of material in 50 minutes.
I took Orgo I and II with Dr. Allen, and she did a wonderful job teaching the material. As a subject, organic chemistry is grueling, but Dr. Allen helps walk you through the mechanisms so clearly. Her tests are absolutely killer, but if you're willing to practice and ask for help when you need it, then you can succeed!
Anna is an amazing professor for Ochem. She understands how hard the class is and gives chance after chance for students to learn and improve their grades. If you go to lectures and utilize resources, there is no reason why someone shouldn't pass any of her classes.
Anna Allen seems like a nice person, but as a professor in ochem 2, she goes extremely fast and the whole class is like a race to write the notes down. Her tests are often difficult and she is a tough grader. Compared to Alan Kennan (I had him for ochem 1) she grades her tests way harder.
She goes incredibly fast in her lectures and crams too much info into them for students to actually retain. Her tests are also unfairly hard. She shows you a single way to do a reaction in class and then expects you to know every possible way to perform it on the exams. She frequently uses reagents on the exams that have never been used before.
Anna Allen was a good lecturer, but her exams were SO HARD. Knowing the ~100 reactions she teaches in class is not enough- you have to be able to combine them and apply them to much more complicated questions. If you want a deep understanding of ochem, take her, but if you're just trying to get a good grade, I'd recommend an easier professor.
Very good at lecturing, but tests are very very hard
Proffesor Allen's exams were quite difficult but didn't often throw curve balls. Studying I required, as exams can have many components to be recognized. She allows up to 10 bonus points on many exams and opportunities for extra credit. I found her to be very kind and punctual. It's clear she wants students to succeed, despite the tough curriculum.
Very degrading and harsh. Not willing to help in office hours
Anna Allen is the best OChem professor I have encountered- and I have been on the grading side. As a past student and current grader for the department, you have the best chance of success with Anna Allen. She is more than happy to work with you if your struggling and has MANY outside supplementary resources.
I absolutely LOVED Anna Allen's Ochem 2 class. She is so passionate about organic chemistry and she always gives the lecture hall a good vibe. I'm usually not an A+ student, but it's hard not to pay attention to everything she says. Best class I have ever taken so far!
Dr. Allen is, by far, been the best chemistry professor I have had so far. She is very passionate about chemistry in her lectures. That's not to say this class isn't challenging; the homework can be tricky, and her exams are no joke. However, she offers so much test remediation so if you mess up the first time you always have a second chance!
This class sucks so much but anna allen is the goat. Homework is pretty reasonable and you can get 50% credit for all of late work up until the final as long as you've attempted it. You get a free test retake for every test a week later for 100% credit. Your lowest exam is replaced by the final if its a better score. There's even 2% extra credit.
Anna Allen is by far the best professor I've ever had. She clearly knows ochem extremely well AND she can break things down & explain everything well for people who don't. She is an incredible teacher and I wish I could have her for every class. Her exams are very hard, but she gives retakes & extra credit, so work hard and you will do well.
Dr. Allen is the best. love how she teaches us to apply the skills we learned in class to new problems. She has high standards, but she also makes all the tools we need to succeed available. When I took the class (Sp23), we had retakes. I also have LA'ed and graded for her. Her outreach to struggling students is amazing.
Dr. Allen is a really good professor. She is constantly giving tutoring opportunities and is super clear about what is going to be on the exams. She also gives retakes which gives everyone a chance to receive better grades on the exams. The material is super difficult but she does her best to make it as understandable as possible.
as knowledgable as dr. allen is, she is not a good teacher. she purposefully dodges any questions about the exams, often puts questions on there that many will not get, and can be rude during lectures. class averages for the exams were always between 50-70%. i've heard better things about the other 341 prof, so you're better off with him.
Too harsh & condescending to students. Took ochem w/ her twice (withdrew the 1st time due to family member dying, which she was not caring about when I explained my situation & asked for an incomplete grade). Is not great at TEACHING the material. As a non-chem major, took course w/ Kennan and was WAY better: C to an A & I actually learned ochem.
Dr. Allen is a great professor and the best OChem professor at CSU. I definitely recommend her for OChem. The class is hard in nature, so having a good professor isn't everything. You still must apply yourself.
Good at lecturing but not much else. Not personable, unwilling to answer questions, not understanding that people have life events that happen outside of class. Went to office hours multiple times and she would just sit there on her phone (which she also never turns off during lecture). Doesn't seem to want to be there or teach.
Took twice, first time dropped because of serious illness that she was NOT understanding about. Second time had surgery in the middle of the semester, she didn't care. Does stupid iclickers and is incredibly deragatory about anything that doesn't have to do with Ochem. Avoid if you have SDC accomodations or a will to live through medical trauma.
Awful professor. Take anyone else - seriously ANYONE ELSE.
I had to drop the class after the third exam because I was failing. Not awful but not good, didn't explain material enough & rushed through important stuff. Had little to no resources for her students to succeed & exams were TOUGH! I'm retaking the course with Olivo & it's already been so much better! If you have the option, don't take her class.
Anna Allen is an okay teacher. She obviously knows a lot on the subject, but her course is poorly organized. If you don't grasp concepts quickly, it's hard to catch up. She offers no extra practice or retakes, making it feel like memorization over learning, which is tough for organic chemistry.
Dr Allen is a fantastic chemistry teacher. She clearly emphasizes everything she wants you to know from her lectures and provides many resources to succeed in her class, such as text access to LAs for questions. Her tests are known to be hard but I have never walked out of a test feeling like it was unfair. She also offers retakes.
If you are a bad exam taker or have test anxiety DO NOT TAKE ANNA ALLEN. Her exams have been confirmed to be much more challenging then any other professor as well as having trick questions. I find her to been challenging to talk to and learned mostly from videos online rather from her teaching.
Dr. Allen lays everything out extremely well, making it easy to understand what you really need to know for exams; that said, they are HARD, so be prepared. She gives multiple extra credit opportunities, test retakes, and has very organized lecture materials.
Dr. Allen is awesome! It is clear that she is very knowledgeable and knows what she is talking about. 343 is very lecture heavy, but she clearly defines learning expectations/outcomes. Her exams are difficult if you don't study, and I thought they were all pretty fair. This course does have a lot of homework, but it was very useful.
Exams 1 and 2 make the class seem a lot easier than it really is, the rest of the course is TOUGH. Lectures feel like her just talking to herself not really caring about the pace at all. I learned more from professor dave on yt. Her worksheets are good practice and I actually really apprciated her second attempts on exams.
She doesn't explain things very clearly, even when she's asked to clarify what she just said. Lots of practice problems provided and the practice exam q's show up in the exam. The opportunity for second chance exams were nice but exams 3-final were rough. Not a terrible prof, but if you're able to take it with a different prof, I'd recommend it.
Exams 1 and 2 are way easier than the rest of the course! This class is the hardest I've ever taken at CSU and is the first B I've ever gotten here, as a senior. Did not have a good time. If I could do it over again, I would not have taken this instructor. For exams, draw out and understand all mechanisms; the exams are not multiple-choice.
This class was HARD. I don't think its the professor's fault - there's just so much content. She cares about student's success and does not want you to memorize but you have to memorize a lot to have a strong base. There is plenty of homework and practice problems that aren't graded. Expectations are clear, material is challenging.
Extremely hard class. Exams are difficult but second chance exams help. Shes a good lecturer but theres so much content. Don't be shocked when test average is 50%, doesn't matter how much you study you will likely struggle on exams. Do the extra credit and don't fall behind. Good luck you will need it.
Dr. Allen's lectures are really informative. This class is inherently hard, and the exams are pretty intense, but they are very fair. She provides so much practice material, and if you put in the work, you will succeed in this class. Also, she does second chance exams, and every exam is graded day of, which is really nice. no complaints
