Anna Curtis is such a goofball! She is a pretty good professor overall. Honestly, Chem 101 wasn't as hard as it was made out to be. I didn't even read the textbook. Make sure you study hard before each exam, do a lot of practice problems, and read each slide! You've got this.
Dr. Curtis is a young and super enthusiastic professor who really loves chemistry, but some of the concepts are just over-complicated. Can get side-tracked and start rushing in lecture. Really helpful during office hours. You will basically teach yourself but she helps a lot.
Chem101 is hard regardless of the professor. You'll have to read the textbook, NOT fall behind, and practice often to get a good grade. Professor Curtis is bubbly and gives alright lectures, but most of the class you have to take initiative and learn outside of class. If you have specific questions, she's always SUPER approachable and helpful!
For chem 101 it really does not matter what professor you have, but out of the ones at UNC I'll say Anna is average. Don't expect to learn everything during lectures, chem 101 is a flip classroom and the bulk of your understanding will come from outside of class practice. Quizzes like every other Wednesday
Dr. Curtis is alright, but I tend to get so bored during lectures that I fall asleep. It got to a point during the year in which I was only showing up to lecture for the iclicker points. If you read the book on your own, you'll probably learn just as much, if not more than at lecture.
Dr. Curtis is super enthusiastic about chemistry but it is really necessary that you read the textbook in order to do well. Lectures are basically the textbook on slides. Overall chem 101 is hard across the board. I don't really think that professor really matters that much for this level of chemistry. She's quirky and it makes 8am classes better.
Dr. Curtis is fairly average when it comes to other professors at UNC in terms of the structure of the class, but don't bother asking her questions. She will try her best to come up with some form of response, but in doing so she just ends up confusing the entire class. Also, MC test questions are meant to trip you up, not to gauge knowledge.
Professor Curtis was fine. At times, I was confused by the way she explained things. The CHEM101 department works together, so all the sections have the same homework and tests. She wasn't my favorite, but I got through most of the material okay. Your grade really depends on your test grades.
Dr. Curtis has a good attitude and is enthusiastic about the subject matter she teaches. She places a lot of emphasis on students showing her they know what to do, so during lectures students have to complete examples of concepts they're working on. Chem 101 is a standard weed-out class, but study the slides and you'll be just fine.
The professor is very quirky but sweet. You're graded mainly on tests, so studying is very important. Most of the work you do HAS to be done outside of class.
Dr. Curtis was new when I had her, but you can see her enthusiasm for chemistry. In the beginning of the semester they will tell you to not rely on the textbook. Ignore that completely, to succeed I would suggest to read the part of the book before the lecture or you will be completely lost. I highly regret not doing that and thats why I did so bad
Nice person but doesn't respect the fact that students have other places to be outside of her class. She often continues teaching two to three minutes after class is supposed to be over which isn't very accommodating to those who have class directly after hers. We end up missing explanations because she refuses to stop teaching after class is over.
Despite what most of these reviews say, Dr. Curtis is a pretty good professor. Her notes are helpful and tests are similar to practice problems. Chem 101 has a lot of material so she has to go quickly which just means you have to put in a little extra work yourself.
CHEM 101 is a hard topic at UNC overall, but she was very enthusiastic about teaching it despite it being 8 in the morning. She's a nice person but not the best lecturer, but the class is standardized so it doesn't really matter. If you want to actually learn the material, I would advise taking another professor if you can.
Dr. Curtis was not my favorite. There was little to no application of the topics we were learning to real life or even broader chemistry topics. The "purpose" behind everything we were learning was just to get us to chem 102, but after how dull this class was I don't even wanna take 102. Not a terrible class but so boring and dull.
Dr. Curtis is a good professor. CHEM at UNC is hard, but I did not think Dr. Curtis' class was hard to understand. If you go to class and study for exams, it shouldn't be hard to get an A or B. Tests are not that hard and reflect what is learned in class.
Dr. Curtis is a good professor! CHEM101 is a difficult course no matter what professor you have, but Dr. Curtis provides many opportunities to succeed in her class. I took her class during the pandemic and she was very great when it came to helping us perform our best. She always has Q&A's which I recommend attending!
Dr. Curtis was pretty alright until the pandemic hit. She is very enthusiastic, which helps not get bored during lecture, but I fear this class is pretty fast if you don't have a background in chem and you'd need to put in a lot of work outside class. Watch out on Mastering for last minute homework due date changes.
Chemistry at UNC is hard regardless of who you take it with. You will have to put in the extra work to understand chemistry. Dr. Curtis is a very understanding and approchable professor, and the best professor you could have for a chemistry class. Taking her class will make your overall chemisty experience better at UNC.
Dr Curtis was a fun professor to have! Her classes were very easy, and her exams were mostly based off of notes given in the class. Definite recommendation for an intro level Chem class!
Professor Curtis is a good gen chem professor! Despite what some of the reviews say she has a ton of information to cover and has not much time to finish it. Her exams are very fair but beware test 2 as it is very difficult material and the test is difficult too. She is very accessible with Q&A sessions and her 6 minute meetings. I would recommend.
Dr. Curtis was a great professor for Chem 101. It is a hard class regardless of who teaches it, but I think she does a great job of giving everyone the opportunity to succeed as long as you work for it. I read the textbook and took notes before class and then studied her slideshows for exams as well. If you do that it will be easy to get an A.
Dr. Curtis tries her hardest to be a fun lecturer but it just doesn't happen. If you have any sort of high school chemistry background then you wont have any trouble in chem 101 w/ Dr. Curtis, but this class is not a fun experience. Be sure to know how to do all the problems on the practice tests. If you can take this w/ another prof. you should.
Dr. Curtis has a spunky personality which makes her class a little more entertaining. She does a good job at thoroughly explaining concepts and will work though problems until she feels the majority of the class understands it! She definitely made this class better than I expected it to be.
Dr. Curtis is a wonderful professor IF you are willing to commit to daily readings and homework. If you are not prepared to work for at least an hour a day then I would not recommend this class. The tests are challenging but fair. If you are applying yourself and using all the resources, there is no reason you shouldn't earn a stellar grade. READ!
I had Dr. Curtis for Summer Session 1 and would definitely recommend taking her. She really puts in time for her students and does tons of exam like practice questions throughout lecture. She does grade on participation in lecture and recitation. She also puts you into groups with other students for projects and practice problems.
There is a lot of material in Chem 101 and it can be overwhelming for any student. There's little instruction and lots of group work. This sounds great until the entire group doesn't know what to do and we teach ourselves wrong. Curtis is a great person, but her online style of teaching isn't good for students well-being.
Dr. Curtis kinda sucks. Her teaching style is subpar, she never sounds confident in her explanations, and she honestly just confused me more. Once, she explained an entire problem for 15 minutes just for a student to call her out for getting the wrong answer and she never went back to explain the right way. She seems like a good person but.
At least in the online format, all CHEM 101 classes have the same asynchronous lectures, assignments, tests, and quizzes. That being said, they should all be the same difficulty level. Professor Curtis is a great choice for CHEM 101 because she is sweet and understanding when you ask questions in class.
Most work is done outside of class with video lectures, forums, before class assignments, and homework. The workload is pretty manageable; it usually takes me about an hour to complete the assignments before class. The quizzes and practice midterm she gives before each midterm is super helpful. Very nice professor!
You have to be willing to do the work in this class. Dr. Curtis provides a ton of materials to help prepare for the final/exams, like practice midterms and quizzes and I would suggest reading the textbook to clear up confusion from the lecture videos. Overall, Dr. Curtis was truly a passionate professor with a great deal of knowledge to share.
chem online was actually super organized & structured, and Curtis was super nice & understanding. Our class time was actually only 20 mins so most work was done on our own. theres a lot of TAs and opportunities to get help. Curtis was supa nice tho!!
Dr. Curtis is an okay professor when it came to online learning. She pre recorded lectures which didn't go too in depth for the lessons. The actual class comprised of being 20 minutes long and often she would run out of time and rarely go over the problems in depth. The class isn't too difficult if you read the textbook and do the homework.
Curtis is a great professor! She really cares for her students, but you have to work for a good grade in this class. Chem is notoriously hard but not impossible. Technically, the chem profs do very little teaching but they provide the resources for students to succeed. They have a ton of students so this is understandable.
The chem 101 professors prerecorded lectures that honestly didn't go into much depth, so you gotta work for understanding. It's not impossible because of outside resources. Breakout rooms during class, which was 20 min, for a few practice problems. Definitely do practice problems/practice exams they give. She holds great office hours!
Professor Curtis was overall great considering it was online! You have to do most of the work, but if you put the time and effort in you should do fairly well. Don't skip out on the homework, participate and go to office hours. Use your resources and PLEASE STUDY: I didn't and failed my first test. Teaching yourself is hard, but it is rewarding.
Dr. Curtis is a really kind person and provides a lot of resources to help students. However, you really have to put in a good effort or you will struggle. The actual class period kinda sucks since you spend most of the time in breakout rooms, so definitely go to office hours if you can.
Curtis wasn't too bad but not great. Assignments include weekly graded hw's, warm-ups before class, quizzes before tests, and forum posts. Forum posts were really annoying, but if you put in the effort and respond with a couple of sentences to the prompt you should be fine. We also had 20min lectures that went over example questions.
The online semester was challenging, but Curtis understood that and was lenient with missing class, messing up during exams, etc. Tests were all open note and taken online, not proctored however, they were linear meaning that you couldnt go back once a question was submitted. Chemistry content is difficult but study/participate and you'll succeed.
Professor Curtis did a great job organizing an online curriculum for chemistry where there is a good amount of collaboration and practice. All of the chem 101 classes were the same except for the online meeting portion. Prof. Curtis answered any questions we had and explained each practice question in a way that was easy to understand.
Professor Curtis is a very good teacher and explains all the concepts very well. There is a lot of work because we had to watch lectures outside of class along with completing the homework but it was worth it. You can definitely get a good grade in this class if you put the effort in.
Chem at UNC isn't easy so obviously this class won't be any different, but Curtis is a solid choice for Chem 101. If you pay attention to her videos and supplement it with the textbook, it clicks and you can do well. The tests weren't too difficult but due to covid they were linear, you can't go back, which sometimes made them stressful.
Dr. Curtis was willing to help her students throughout the semester. There was a lot of work however, if you did a majority of the homework then you ended up having almost another midterm grade to help boost your grade. I also would recommend peer tutoring if you aren't familiar with chemistry because some concepts just need further clarification.
Hated this class more than I hate Collegeboard. Do what you want with this information.
Dr. Curtis is nice. I don't like the linearity or the time limit of exams; those aspects just make it hard for no reason. Try to do all the other work in the class, because exams are difficult. I wish we were given more actual practice exam-type problems & exam resources. For example, the practice final didn't help me at all for the real final.
Class was pretty easy but the teaching style was not very clear. All exams were linear, but grading was easy. Accessible, TA office hours were very helpful. All lectures were async and class activities were sync, met for 20 minutes 3x a week. There was a lot of homework but it definitely helped with understanding the material.
With this class being online with about 400 students, Dr. Curtis did as good as you can do in that situation. Her lecture videos were informative, but oftentimes, extra research was required to answer homework questions. If you're ever struggling with a concept, please go to office hours. Definitely what got me through unit 2.
Curtis is very quirky, but she's such a sweet professor! Lectures this semester were pre-recorded and very short, and the synchronous meetings were also short and we didn't cover much so you really have to take the initiative to learn and practice problems on your own but recitations are extremely helpful. You definitely have to put in the work
I really learned the material in 101 because of her. a lot of my friends had another professor and were struggling much more than I was.
The synchronous portion of this class only focused on examples rather than lecture material so we couldn't ask questions right when watching the lecture videos. Recitations were especially helpful but Mastering Chemistry was quite tedious. Overall, this class wasn't bad and Dr. Curtis explained most concepts clearly.
The online format makes this class easier. Tests and quizzes are open-note, which helps a lot. Curtis seems friendly and kind, and she explains the material fairly well. Her recorded lectures make learning easier. Take copious notes, show up, try, and practice concepts thoroughly to score well on exams, which comprise a large portion of your grade.
The lectures were all videos and the class forced you to teach yourself most of the material, but Dr. Curtis was a very kind and understanding professor with the unusual circumstances of this semester. I would definitely recommend her for this course.
Dr. Curtis is sweet and her recorded lectures are easily understood. There is a lot of work and participation points, but pretty much all of the exam questions were solved in lecture/class. Though the exams were linear, the practice exams helped gauge the time limit and type of questions that would be on the exam.
Dr. Curtis is so nice; however, the lectures were not helpful. Class was 20 minutes, and she didn't even teach during this short amount of time. We would go into break out rooms and do practice problems. There were lecture videos on Sakai, but these were 10 minutes long and only covered basic information. Wouldn't recommend taking this online.
She is a nice professor, but she doesn't make the content easier to learn, in my opinion. One of the better professors you can choose to take this class for, though.
Professor Curtis gave short lectures which were very helpful of course material and included practice exam questions. Lectures were not mandatory as long as you answered poll everywhere questions during class time, questions were given the night before. But I recommend attending lecture to get the correct answers on the poll everywhere questions
This class was good overall. Study! The materials and work she gives us really line up with the midterms, and practicing makes them so much easier (I learnt later on). The downside was that the exams are linear, which is terrible because you can't go back and check your work. Overall, participate, study, do homework, take notes, and you'll be fine.
With the online format we only had class for 20 minutes and just did practice problems in breakout rooms for that time, but Dr. Curtis always stayed on the Zoom answering questions after which was really nice. I didn't think the class was too bad! You can tell she loves Chemistry.
This past semester was different because both chemistry teachers taught both classes. Sometimes Prof. Curtis made the lecture video and sometimes the other guy made the video. She definitely explained things a lot better than he did and I would totally recommend her for Chem 101. During class we went over problems and she explained how to do them.
Class was only for 20 mins where you're in a breakout room and answer questions on PollEv for participation. Dr. Curtis loves chem and you can tell by how enthusiastic she is. She was always there after class to answer questions. Dr. Curtis makes most of the pre-class videos and she explains concepts very well! Chem is hard, but she makes it fine!
The course load isn't bad at all, and Professor Curtis always had a positive attitude. She prerecorded lectures to watch outside of class but they were only about 15mins. We spent class in breakout rooms working on practice problems which was helpful. The only complaint I have is that we were not given enough time on test, many people didn't finish
Chem101 is a difficult class no matter who you get, but Curtis makes it doable. There is a lot of material to cover but the work was laid out simply and it was up to you to watch the lectures on your own time. You definitely get what you put in. Lectures were 20 min going over questions, I often didn't pay much attention. Learning is up to you.
Chemistry is gonna be hard no matter what professor you have, and I think Professor Curtis made the class interesting and concise. Definitely a good choice for a lecture heavy course.
Maybe this isn't a fair rating since I took it online, but expecting us to understand concepts with 5-15 minutes of "lecture" videos before each class was not the move. Dr. Curtis also did not provide any practice or outside resources. She is kind, but does not make sure students understand what is actually going on
Dr. Curtis is excitable to say the very least. Shes always perky and plays dance music at the beginning of class... even at 8am. Her lectures were decent except theres no room for questions and we always ran out of time because problems were complicated. I think unc chemistry kinda sucks either way so honestly this might be your best bet bud.
I really can't believe that Dr. Curtis has so many good reviews here... she gives WAY too much homework. She doesn't even teach at ALL. Everything is online now but instead of teaching, she sends us to breakout rooms to do problems for 20 mins. She LITERALLY doesn't teach a thing. If you're not naturally good at chem, you won't do well w/ her.
I can acknowledge that Dr. Curtis tried to make class fun but I felt like you were expected to teach yourself outside of class from videos. Zooms were unengaging - we couldn't unmute/talk, just type in the chat or answer polls. Breakout rooms were not effective bc we were all confused. Prof didn't do much to support her struggling students.
Super kind and enthusiastic prof. Wasn't a huge fan of the structure of the class because notes are taken before class and barely any additional resources were provided which makes it more challenging. Tests are pretty difficult but not impossible. Class is homework heavy & you have to work for it. Chem101 sucks but overall decent choice for a prof
Dr. Curtis is such a nice individual, but her class is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I had to drop it. You miss one week of work due to something, and you spend forever trying to make up for it. WAY too much homework, barely had a break to focus on other classes. But again, amazing individual.
I was dreading the infamous CHEM101, but I LOVED Chem with Dr. Curtis!!! It was my favorite class this semester! She makes every class fun and I believe she truly wants her students to succeed. 10-30 minutes of homework a day if you spread it out, so very manageable. I am sad I will not be able to take her again, but if you can, DO IT!!!
The class moves very fast and exams are made to trip you up. I do not think lecture is long enough, which causes confusions. The professor is nice in all, but the class is absolutely dreadful.
Dr. Curtis is an okay professor but moves through lectures extremely fast and does not stop the entire period. She's also just really insensitive- my friend died halfway through the semester so I had to take some time off and missed exam 2. She gave me less than 24-hour notice that I would have to take the exam the next day. Just not a nice person
The class itself is very manageable, however her tests have been simply impossible, there are so many traps, some of them its just unfair.
To be honest, It's not like Professor Curtis is a hard professor, I think it's more of the content that's hard and students struggles with more than the actual professor. I think the graded HW and quizzes are mostly a good reflection of the midterms because students become more prepared. The textbook is an important resource for more info.
I would definitely not take this class again with this professor. They went through the lectures very fast and there was little to no time to actually fully understand the course material. Worst professor I have ever had.
Anna Curtis, while she seems like a good person, is not a good professor. I would not recommend taking this class due to the heavy homework load and difficult tests. Not only that but I found her lectures kind of pointless because she went so fast. Professor Curtis definitely needs improvement.
Shes just fine honestly. Not the most helpful nor is she the most compassionate, but dont be upset if you have her. Youll do alright, but there are better chem teachers out there.
Of the chem 101 professors, Curtis is known as the best. But, I don't think she realizes that most students are lacking background knowledge necessary to understand her lectures. She is really knowledgable about chem, but isn't great at explaining. She wants students to succeed and is a nice person. I just didn't mesh well with her teaching style.
She seems like a sweet lady, but personally I found her lectures so unhelpful. You are expected to read/take notes on the textbook and/or watch the supplementary videos before class, but if you do not understand it then, there is not much clarification done in lecture. She overuses the Clickers SO. MUCH. I learn more from the textbook...
CHEM101 at UNC is undeniably hard. No matter what professor you get, the class is structured for failure. However, Curtis is the strongest bet you have in succeeding. She is genuine, and her lecturing is the clearest out of all the professors. There is an assumption that everyone has a strong chem background, but there are resources available.
Curtis is not so bad. Her lectures are kind of dull; she just has you do practice problems every day and expects you to have learned the content yourself the day before. The tests are ridiculous and riddled with trick questions/strange grading; youll get points taken off for not solving it exactly the way she wants even if you get the right answer
CHEM 101 was an incredibly well-organized class. The workload was hardly as heavy as have previously described it. The lectures are very practice problem-heavy, and Dr. Curtis does a great job using the lectures to prepare her students for the midterms. I almost wish my major required CHEM 102 so I could take another class with her.
Chem 101 is a weed out class, so don't go in with expectations of it being easy. With that being said, Curtis is a great pick for the course. The midterms are very difficult and some of the problems have no relation to "real world" chemistry, but if you read the textbook and practice outside of class they are manageable.
Dr Curtis is a great professor. Shes very kind and will gladly go over material that we have trouble with. Its a shame that the class is so big (350 students), because I think that with a smaller group, the engagement would be much better.
Shes a nice lady, but sometimes it feels like she wants you to fail. Ive studied for countless hours for every exam, and without fail on every exam there are tricks that she wants you to fall for. Not to mention, some almost impossible questions to get correct even if you studied all lecture material. She needs work when designing test questions.
Anna has very annoying humor but her teaching style is pretty good for the chem department at UNC. The class itself is definitely not easy and requires work outside of class so be prepared to study. The course is also test heavy so make sure you understand everything before moving on because the final is cumulative.
I have nothing against Prof Curtis specifically but the class sucked. Could've been worse I guess.
Not accessible outside class. Good lecturer compared to the other Chem profs, from what I hear. Overall a pretty good pick
While the chem 101 curriculum is fast-paced and filled with outside learning, Dr. Curtis did amazing while having to teach to a curriculum. She cared about her students, gave great lectures, and is the best professor to have if you want to fully learn the material. She is awesome and I look forward to taking her chem 102 class next semester!
We all know chem sucks in general at UNC. Curtis is a fine choice, probably one of the better ones. Go to lecture and pay attention or you will be lost forever. Tests are hard, worth a lot, and sometimes the practice test is much easier than the actual exam. I put my all into this class and still got a C, but at least Im done. Good luck soldiers.
Dr. Curtis is a good teacher who explains chemistry topics well. The test here can be a bit unfair with the wording, but you will get plenty of practice before the test. Make sure you read your textbook and go to lecture. Her test are very similiar to the lecture questions.
the exams were so much harder than any of the practice material and whenever anyone asked anna a question she said "go to a group problem solving session" which has like 3 times that all didn't work with my schedule. she is a decently nice person but isn't very helpful or good at explaining things. shes better than pielak but not by much.
Questions are straightforward, but there are always a couple that intentionally try to trick you which sucks-in the multiple choice sections. The exams are multiple choice heavy and rly suck if you get even one wrong bc it will bring your grade down 5%. You can never argue your grade, and the teachers are trying to "help". Lectures aren't bad.
Dr. Curtis is a pretty decent choice for CHEM101, she tries to keep lectures lighthearted and does a good job of explaining most topics, and TA's or peer mentors help in gray areas. The course in general is tough only because 75% of your grade depends on the midterms and final. Definitely put in the hours on warm-ups, homework, and studying though.
I love Anna Curtis! Of course all chem classes are going to be hard, but she's a great teacher and explains everything slowly so you can keep up and keeps things light-hearted. She truly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Definitely hard but her group problem-solving sessions are very helpful & it's possible to succeed with effort
I definitely recommend Dr. Curtis! She has a lot of energy, and was effective at explaining concepts at an undergraduate level with a discussion-based class format. She is very accessible in GPSS sessions outside of class, and by using those, I was able to do well on high-stakes tests, which are very application-based.
Chem101 is terrible in general but Curtis made it bearable. Shes a very nice and energetic woman; good teacher. Three exams and the final are 75% of your grade, with the other 25% basically a free 100 to offset test grades. Definitely the best of the options for Chem 101, will be taking her for 102 as well
For the chemistry department Curtis is a great option. She clearly is passionate about what she's teaching and presents extra resources if you need help. Chem101 is a test heavy class so studying every day matters and your grade definitely depends on the work you put in but Curtis is kind and will answer some questions.
If you plan on taking chemistry take Curtis! She is a great teacher and offers many resources to help you succeed. To do well you definitely have to put in the work, since the tests are tricky and heavily weighted, but it's manageable. You can tell she cares for her students and wants them to learn.
Professor Curtis is a pretty nice professor, and her lectures are relatively clear and easy to understand. The course was overall well-structured with clear criteria, so it was easy to prepare for midterms, quizzes, and the final.
Dr. Curtis is the best chemistry teachers that I have had in a while. The lectures are engaging and can expose you to exam type questions. She explains information well, but it is important to attend group problem solving sessions. She gives practice exams a week before the real exam, but do not just do that to study. Practice every problem!!!
Dr. Curtis is a good professor in my opinion, but I think what she struggles most with is knowing her audience. She knows a LOT about chemistry, but most students coming into her class don't. Some of her explanations of things are difficult at best to understand, so I recommend using the textbook whenever you are confused. Exams are HARD!!
Chemistry at UNC is tough no matter what, but I think taking it with Anna Curtis is your best option. She does a great job at explaining concepts in the lectures, so I would highly suggest attending class. Start studying for exams EARLY, because they cover a lot of material and are the majority of your grade.
Professor Curtis is very knowledgeable and this class is very hard. You must read and practice before every class in order to participate. Lectures are full of practice problems and if you didn't read beforehand, you will be confused. She is a good professor, but you must work hard to do well. 75% of your grade is exams, so be sure to study often.
Dr. Curtis is an amazing human being! She always shows up with so much energy and really helps walk the class through each concept and problem. The format and grading of the class were really clear, which was helpful, and we reviewed content before each exam. She is an excellent choice for 101!
AC is such a gem! She is super sweet in office hours and her lectures are engaging and informative. The midterms were pretty fair however the final was a highway robbery. The content itself isn't that hard but come to class knowing what you're doing.
Dr. Curtis is a good professor who explains chemistry content pretty well. Make sure you read before class. Practice exams are provided before very exam and they are very similar, make sure you can do and understand those questions. This isn't an easy A, but you have all you need to succeed.
A strong aspect of this class is that you have PLENTY of practice materials and opportunity to practice outside of class. Majority of the grade is tests that you must study for. Tip: Before each exam, make a study guide with every topic from the unit and how to solve each type of problem. It comes in handy for the exam which is 30% of the grade.
Dr. Curtis seemed like a nice professor from her lectures and was funny, but I had a hard time getting her to respond to emails. The entire CHEM department determines the exams (so its not just her) which I found to be very difficult. I did well on all parts of the class except the exams which caused me to receive the final grade that I got.
Professor Curtis was a very friendly lady, although chemistry at UNC is much harder than anywhere I have seen. The exams are the most important part of this class and can be difficult and it is easy to make stupid mistakes. Study for exams a lot and make sure to make a study guide. I will not be taking CHEM 102 at UNC because this class kicked my b
Honestly, the material taught in this class is not much more difficult than what you learn in high school chemistry, but I felt like the tests were designed for us to mess up. The MC ?s on the tests are worth so much of your grade and are way harder than the short answers. also she never replies to her emails and is not good at communicating
For me, it felt like it was impossible to succeed in this class. Exams are very diffiicult and labs, recitation, and lecture take up so much of your schedule. There was a lot of work and if you get behind, you won't do good. Her lectures were pretty scattered and you have to teach yourself a lot. Only take her if you are very passionate about chem
*Dr.* Curtis was decent I guess. I thought I did pretty good in the class until it got to exam time which is when I started making Cs, just do your homework and study a lot for your exams which combined are like 75% of your grade and youll be fine
CHEM101 at UNC is just hard, not matter who you have, since the exams are made by the department and not just your individual professor. The exams were always so hard and there weren't hardly any questions as difficult as the exam questions to get outside of class to practice. However, Dr. Curtis I think is the best option if you have to take chem.
Professor Curtis cares deeply and wants the best for her students. Chem itself is hard but taking Professor Curtis definitely relieved some stress. She also made our lowest midterm weigh less compared to the other two. Take her!
The chem department sucks, but it is not Dr. Curtis's fault, she will sit with you and help you understand problems. She is also the best 102 lecturer. Chem is going to suck either way, might as well take it with a proffesor who cares and makes it suck less!
Chem 102 is a very hard class for many. I struggled a lot, but Dr. Curtis will give you the best chance of passing. I have heard many bad stories about other Professors, but I have had her for 101 and 102 and can say that she is probably the best.
The chemistry department at UNC doesn't provide us many good options, however, Curtis is probably your best possible option for 101 or 102. She wants you to pass, and has recently made the exams a bit more straight forward. CHEM is no joke, so it ultimately won't matter which professor you have.
Curtis is very eccentric. Honestly, I don't even know if she's a good lecturer because I took this class Fa2020 and didn't watch any of the video. Her tests were pretty fair and you can probably ace them with very little studying if you took chemistry in high school. However beware CHEM 102, Curtis' CHEM 101 class is much easier by far.
I had Curtis for 101 and loved her. This semester however, Curtis seemed very scattered and glossed over concepts that were heavily emphasized on tests. I'm not sure what happened, but I just didn't feel like I got much out of her teaching this semester.
I loved Dr. Curtis for CHEM 101, but for 102, I felt like she didn't cover what was needed for the exams. You have to do a lot of reading OUTSIDE of class, and if you don't read the textbook outlines, you won't succeed. She is the one of the best options regardless though. Very caring and nice.
I had Dr. Curtis for Chem 101 and she was great and cared greatly for her students. As other people said though, not everything in chem 102 was covered thoroughly. When speaking to her in a small group meeting, she said this was her first semester teaching 102 which would provide an explanation. She is your best bet for chem at UNC
Dr. Curtis is an amazing chem prof! Had her for both chem 101 and 102, she did amazing job at explaining concepts and really made learning chem easier. Her exam focus on actual assessment of knowledge instead of confusing you. Take her and you will have the best chance of excelling at chem 102!
Majority of the grade in class were test grades. I thought Dr. Curtis was very nice and really wanted her students to succeed. The tests were not overly difficult or tricky but tested you on the main concepts we learned. Exam questions were based on in class questions and homework. I think she is a great choice for a chem 102 professor!
Lively lecturer, but weird rules in class (you can have tablets but no laptops). Very nice, but not very accessible after class and only has 6-minute "office hour" meetings. Midterms were very fair and straightforward but the final was brutal. Be prepared to read the textbook and do a lot of practice problems. Chem 102 is just a hard class
I had Curtis for 101/102 and she was good. She covered the material well. Her test for 102 at least seem to have focused more on if you knew the material rather than tricking you. The questions were pretty straight forward. You will need to put in work, but you will have all you to succeed.
Dr. Curtis was an amazing lecturer and really cared about students! CHEM-102 has always been hard, but she made it bearable. I personally did not read the textbook; instead, I thought it was helpful to study the lectures and redo the Mastering.
I had Dr. Curtis for both 101 and 102. She's a great lecturer and I liked the guided note and problem-solving layout of 102. She explains stuff pretty well, and there are many options outside of class to get help, and I honestly never used the textbook. The exams were also pretty straightforward and weren't out to trick you which I appreciated!
Dr. Curtis is your best choice for CHEM 102! You can tell she's really into what she's teaching, and I thought that the tests were fair as long as you attended lectures & read the textbook pages she gives you. Gave our class full participation points since she thought we earned it, no graded pop quizzes, easy to talk to with her 6-minute meetings
If you have to take chem, 1000% take it with Dr. Curtis!!! She is an amazing lecturer and she helps make the material feel doable. I didn't actually have her as my professor but I skipped my own chem class every day to attend her lectures instead and it made all the difference. I love her as a person and as a prof even though chem is hard.
The chem department at UNC is always tough. Dr. Curtis is definitely knowledgable, but her lectures were too slow and we were always behind. Wish she spent more time explaining rather than giving us excess time to solve practice problems. She's definitely a kind and caring person - just not the best style for me.
Chem 102 is a difficult class but Curtis is a good professor. Tests are sometimes unreasonable but that has to do with the department more than the professor. GO TO PEER MENTOR SESSIONS, Isabella is amazing and will help you do well in the class. Stay on top of reading the chapter and seek extra support outside of class to do well.
Professor Curtis is great. I think CHEM101 is just a stupid hard class and since the pace of the class is fast, you might get left in the dust trying to understand one topic (i did). I would say just study way before midterms and exams as they are a big chunk of your grade. Other parts of the grade are easy like homework, participation, etc.
I really like prof Curtis. The TA's grade everything and UNC's chem department is very hard in general so this class is not easy. But Curtis always knew what she was doing in lectures and was always excited to teach us chem at 9am. She has a great attitude.
She's super sweet and I really like her as a person- her enthusiasm about teaching chemistry is admirable! UNC Chem Department is terrible in general and will make your life hell, but Curtis is one of the best options. Just make sure you pay attention during lectures and attend review sessions
Chemistry is unnecessarily hard at this school and the chem department seems to want everyone to fail. Curtis was good at explaining some hard concepts, but always seemed to brush over somethings. She never posted her lecture slides on time. I really liked her, but chem 101 is HARD FOR NO REASON.
TAKE CHEM 101 WITH CURTIS!!!! Any chem at UNC is going to be hard but Curtis makes the lectures very tolerable. She is very consistent.
Curtis is hands-down the best option for CHEM 101! She tailors the lectures to the needs of her students and takes extra time in-class to answer questions/re-explain a topic if needed. Didn't always post lecture slides on time but you can look at the other profs' slides or go to GPSS/ChemPossible to make up for this. Kind and wants you to succeed.
Every professor in this department has some issue w them, but Curtis is the exception. She is very nice and a good lecturer. However, the tests are standardized across all 102 sections and graded harshly by TAs. I think that grading would be far easier if she was the one making/grading the tests. Chem sucks, but if you have to take 102, take her.
CHEM 102 is a super hard class, but Dr. Curtis did her best to tailor lectures to students' understandings of different topics. The structure of the class makes it hard to focus on harder practice questions during lecture, but she encouraged students to go to Group Problem Solving Sessions, and I personally got a tutor, which was super helpful.
Honestly, chem here is terrible and this was my worst class, but none of that is because of Dr. Curtis. She's a pretty good lecturer but I found that reviewing the slides posted by other profs could help with certain topics. Exams are worth 75% but they're really lax with participation and you can miss like 15 classes without affecting your grade.
Explains concepts clearly. Flipped classroom as you are expected to read the textbook and learn the concept before class. Tests are fair but overall difficult. No curves or incentives for exams.
Curtis is a good teacher, but I feel like there isn't enough practice especially with questions that are similar to the difficulty and wording of the exam. I find class problems to be a lot easier than test questions but that's more of an issue with the chem department in general. Overall, Curtis is a good choice just wish there was more practice
The professor herself is great! she is very upbeat and excited about the class, but I found her hard to reach throughout the semester as when you have a question about something in class, you have to go to GPSS or find other outside the class resources to find the answer. Exams are harder than taught but that's just how the chemistry department is
There is a lot of out of class work but it is worth it to do, the readings are helpful but not always necessary i just guessed my way through the warmups and (since its for completion not correctness) and things got explained during class pretty well, other than that just making you understand the concepts and the class is manageable
Dr. Curtis is probably the best 102 professor. She is engaging and decent at explaining concepts, though not particularly available outside of class. But the Chem department is a mess. Communication between the professors and the review session leaders is severely lacking. Tests are tough and account for a huge portion of your grade and are long.
She is very bubbly, which is good for keeping you awake in chemistry! Study the slides to do well on the exams and take notes during lectures. The PMs are very helpful for answering questions in class. Chem 102 isn't terrible, and she's the best professor for this class.
The chem department at UNC is awful, but professor Curtis is a good teacher. The exams are much harder than anything taught in class and basically dictate your grade.
Ms. Curtis is probably the best chem 102 professor at UNC. She was sweet and cared about the success of her students. The material can be challenging but if you go to GPSS and actively do practice questions you'll be fine. I think 102 is easier than 101 because it's just utilizing equations, and is less focused on conceptual information like 101.
The chem department is not great- if you do bad on one exam it can screw you over and the final is worth a lot. However, Anna Curtis is a kind queen and I enjoyed her lectures. She's very sweet and loves chemistry and is overall just an enjoyable professor.
I love Dr. Curtis. She's incredibly knowledgeable and super nice. Definitely read the textbook and go to GPSS and her 6-minute meetings. Always has a positive attitude and is supportive. Take her for any class you can!
I was lucky to have Curtis for both CHEM 101 and 102. Both semesters, her lectures focused on the lesson objectives for that day and included time to address student questions and plenty of exam-type practice questions. The 102 peer mentors are generally unhelpful; ChemPossible and GPSS are good resources! Also, read the textbook before each class.
It's up to you to read the textbook; you'll understand much more if you do. Exams are 84% of grade - do practice problems. I went to one peer mentor's session every week. I sat in the same seat next to a peer mentor I liked each lecture. Prof Curtis is engaging with lots of energy. When I met with her, I found her to be willing to help.
Dr. Curtis is awesome! Although the class itself is very challenging (but that's just Chem at UNC in a nutshell), she explains very well during lecture and includes plenty of practice problems to help you prepare for exams. That being said, do not skip class or let content pile up and make sure to take advantage of CHEMPossible, GPSS and PMs/SIs.
Chem at UNC is hard no matter who your professor is. This class is a major time commitment. Curtis is OK but I felt like she left out some important things in the lecture. Make sure to attend GPSS and get extra help before falling too far behind.
Dr. Curtis was a great professor. I found this class to be a little difficult but going to office hours was extremely helpful. She always answered my questions there and really cared about getting to know me which was so sweet. Tests do make up a majority of your grade but go to class and do the homework so that you don't miss easy points.
Pros: - Very animated / fun to talk to - Helpful resources outside of class - The coolest classroom on the planet Cons: - Could not stand group discussions - Exams were tougher than 101 - Gatekeep answers on practice exams How to Study: Go to ULA sessions and do their practice problems!
If you don't have to take chem at UNC, don't. She was a boring lecturer, made mistakes frequently and we never finished lessons the day of. Only available for meetings 6 min. long. Use TA resources but know the tests will be way harder. It feels we are set up to fail and they don't realize these grades impact our future. Major GPA tanker.
Curtis's lectures are engaging and she explains the material well. This class is tough because the exams dictate the grade. Instead of going to GPSS or UL sessions, I did the UL practice problems they posted on Canvas. One bad move that Curtis made was that I proved that I was right on an exam question I got wrong, and she kinda blew me off.
The way Dr. Curtis lays out her train of thought when approaching problems is incredible. She emphasizes application over memorization. The grade I received isn't a reflection of her abilities. This was my first semester at UNC, and I also had bad study habits. One major downside is that there were no office hours where you could meet one-on-one.
Do. Not. Take.
Chem 101 in general is a tough class but she made it extremely digestible. She thoroughly explains the concepts and is available for problem solving sessions outside of class. Many people don't do well and blame it on the professor but as long as you practice outside of class and re-write the lecture notes you will do fine.
Chem is hard, but Dr Curtis is a good teacher and truly cares about all of her students. She is accessible outside of class and gives plenty of opportunities to attend group problem-solving or other forms of tutoring. Her instructions are clear and her canvas page is detailed. I do not recommend the class, but if you have to then take it with her.
Whoever you take chem-101 with, it's gonna be hard and you're not gonna like the professor. Go to GPSS, and find a study group if you can, and you'll do fine. Overall, she was good though, and if you have to take chem-101, I'd recommend.
Offers good explanations especially in GPSS, but moves extremely slow during lecture. Ultimately, the course is not a reflection of her, the chem department is just terrible in itself. You will end up teaching yourself most of the content in chem, but that is not because of Dr. Curtis. She has clear enthusiasm for the subject.
Chem here is annoying, but Dr. Curtis made it better. She's very sweet and quirky and cares a lot about her students understanding the content. Her lectures can run slow/long, but it's because she takes the time to explain the concepts. GPSS is a must for 101 though; lecture and homework will not be enough to understand the content fully.
Anna Curtis was very sweet and an engaging lecturer. Chem 101 at UNC is just extremely hard and requires extensive practice (recitation, Chem Possible, GPSS, etc). I think she moves at the perfect pace for students who are just learning these chemistry concepts for the first time.
Dr. Curtis is kind and attentive to students. Chemistry is a hard class regardless of professor and your grade will rest heavily on exams. However, Curtis is easy to reach and available to help students. Lectures are pretty standard between professors (use the same slides). If you have to take chem, Curtis is a great option!
Dr. Curtis cares about chemistry and her students. I just wish that she would've spent more time in class going over exam-type questions rather than explaining the basic concepts to us (that we were already expected to know before class). The chem department here can be frustrating so I honestly don't think it matters who you take the class with.
Curtis is fine but Chem is really tough and takes getting used to. Make sure you work outside of class to understand everything
CHEM 101 is hard no matter which professor you take. Professor Curtis is a really sweet person and very approachable and I appreciated how she took things slow until she was sure we understood basic concepts before moving on. I felt like we did a lot of easy stuff in class and were expected to do challenging problems alone, which I struggled with.
Chem101 is hard, but she's nice and always had so much energy. Don't take chem if you don't have to.
She was good in her quirky way. She genuinely loves chem and wanted us to see the beauty in it, unfortunately I just could not. Remember to redirect your anger from chem teachers to the chem department, they are the real enemies. She held really informative GPSS and would take thorough time in class to explain concepts and exam-type questions.
Dr. Curtis is probably the best professor in the UNC Chem department. If you have to take chem 101 DO IT WITH HER. Her lectures are clear and she explains things well with examples and applications. She also great at getting a feel for that the class doesn't understand.
Dr. Curtis is a caring professor, but Chem 101 is a tough class overall. Attend office hours, use the free textbook, and try Unstuckstudy for extra prep - it really helps.
If you're taking 101, take it with Dr. Curtis! This is a tough class no matter what, but Dr. Curtis is thorough in her explanations and goes really in-depth on concepts she knows students struggle with. Collaboration and participation is heavily encouraged in her class.
Dr. Curtis is a pretty good lecturer, however the content is difficult. Chem 101 really shows you what studying is and you are going to have to learn it on your own as well. Just attend GPSS sessions, watch youtube videos, and study the concepts rather than just memorizing the formulas.
Dr. Curtis is a great lecturer and teaches concepts in a digestible way. The formatting of Chem101 is mostly textbook heavy, so the professor you have won't impact your grade nearly as much as how much you read. To get a good grade in the class I recommend staying on top of your pre-class assignments and attending ChemPossible.
Honestly, it doesn't matter what professor you get Chem because it is standardized and you will teach yourself most of the content, but Anna curtis is absolutely the best professor that you can get for chem 101. She explains concepts in a way that is digestible to anyone. You will have to put in the work though because Chem at UNC is hard.
CHEM 101 is standardized, so the formatting of the class and its assignments are the same no matter which professor one has, but I really enjoyed Dr. Curtis as a lecturer. She was very kind and always full of energy while teaching. She made difficult concepts easier to understand, which was great because I hadn't taken a chem course in a while.
I would say Anna Curtis is one of the best Chem 101 lecturers. She seems to really care about the subject matter and is enthusiastic while teaching, without being too overboard. Although chem 101 is a flipped classroom format which can be somewhat difficult, I feel like she addresses all difficult content and allows time for questions always.
Curtis was a great lecturer overall. Only issue I had was that she would often be very behind on lessons so it was a bit frustrating at times. Class was pretty difficult but you will be okay if you focus on understanding concepts and doing LOTS of practice.
Standardized class but her lectures were by far the best. She explained concepts and thought processes instead of step by step instructions which aligned perfectly with the challenging tests. People with all deferent grades in the class respect her greatly and would take again.
Prof Curtis is a great lecturer! She is engaging and kind. When she explains things she shows her thought process so you get a better idea of how to approach the problems. An A is achievable if you put in the effort. My advice: 1) Read chapters to understand, and put what you're learning in the context of what you already know 2) Go to CHEMPossible
She was a good teacher, but chem 101 will be hard no matter who you take it with. Ask questions and go to GPSS if you are having trouble.
I am not joking when I say she is likely the worst professor in the chemistry department. During her lectures, she repeats the same idea numerous times and takes forever to finish simple problems that anyone in the class would understand. If you are taking Chem102, take it with any other professor who doesn't waste their students' time.
She is a very sweet lady but tends to repeat herself. Also, her pacing varies: one day she moves through the slides very slowly, then the next class time she rushes. Wouldn't recommend her :p
Doesn't do a good job of explaining anything. Very incompetent
She is incompetent. I would rather watch paint dry than sit in her class. She does an awful job of keeping students engaged. She goes over what 2+2 is like we are in first grade and doesn't prepare us for the exams.
Professor Curtis is not a good professor by any means. She is very bad at explaining basic chemistry concepts and prepares her students in a poor manner for every midterm. The averages in her classes are incredibly low because it requires students to self study to the fullest to perform well. Do not take chemistry with her by any means.
If you have to take chem 102, I would take it with her. It's a super hard class and the tests are awful, but she as a teacher is very nice and enthusiastic about her subject.
She's very passionate for sure but only teaches surface level, and on the midterm, they expect you to be Antoine Lavoisier (the father of chemistry). The class is 84% midterms and finals together. The lectures felt pointless but you have to go because attendance is graded. Go to GPSS if you want to pass. GPA killer for sure.
If you're not religious, pick a religion and pray. I have never been in such a difficult and unnecessarily confusing course like this. Truly good luck to everyone who has to take this. Godspeed.
Anna Curtis is a great professor, chemistry here is just difficult. She is a little quirky but is genuinely excited about chemistry and helping students learn. She really emphasizes knowing the reason why behind concepts and equations, which does make exams harder, but she does a good job explaining things.
The way gen chem is structured at UNC tend to be more dependent on how well you prepare yourself and less about the actual professor you have in my opinion. Curtis was clearly passionate about chem and was kinda entertaining and quirky, but because of the nature chem here I simply can not give her above a 3. chem here sucks but it is what it is.
UNC gen chem is definitely not perfect but Curtis is super caring and approachable and explains examples/topics well in class. Class is designed for you to learn from the textbook and lectures just reinforce the topics from readings. If you read the textbook carefully her lectures are helpful and you will be fine.
Chem is hard no matter which professor you have for 102, as it is the same slides and the same exams for everyone. I think Curtis was a great professor, especially outside of the lecture. In GPSS she was very sweet and helpful, and she was great help for study habits in office hours. She's a little corny and had a few laughs in class too.
The UNC Chemistry department is extremely difficult; however, I found her teaching to be extremely helpful. She really emphasized understanding the underlying principles of chemistry - the “why” - which, once you actually learn, is crucial and helps with your chemistry intuition. If you take 102, definitely take it with her!!
101/102 get a bad wrap, but they're some of UNC's best-designed courses regarding evidence-based learning and avid practice problem exposure. PAY ATTENTION AND BUY INTO THE SYSTEM. I learned so much + Curtis was clear + qualified. Take accountability for your learning, and trust that 102 provides everything you need to succeed. TLDR: loved Curtis!!
I had her class in Spring 2025. She was a fine chemistry teacher, and she is definitely passionate about her job. I didn't really find her inspiring, and some days she could go from being the sweetest lady to quite snarky. The chemistry department is also just tough. Self study and practice is super necessary, but take with her if you can!
Dr. Curtis is wonderful and very accessible. However, exams are 85% of your grade (20% per midterm, 25% final) and they were tough. The rest of your grade is homework which is graded very leniently.
