The exams contain material that is not covered in the book or in class. Lectures are pretty much a waster of time with her as a professor.
At least she's nice. But that's about it. Her lectures do not make sense whatsoever and if you want to do well, you have to practically learn everything on your own. The tests are difficult and many times contain questions regarding stuff we never discussed in class or the textbook. Luckily she does offer a few extra credit opportunities. Good luck
In class participation and frequent online homework make up a large portion of the grade. If you actually care to teach yourself from the homework material instead of speeding through just to get them done, then her lectures will be helpful review and a useful guide. Take advantage of her walk-in office hours and she's more than willing to help.
SHOW UP TO LECTURE, it will save your grade. Those points will save your life. Exams are hard and total application- so lecture and reading the book don't directly help.
Dr. Hiatt is amazing and is a great teacher! She is always willing to help in office hours and responds fast to emails. The exams do test application, but are not that hard if you do the work--she gives lots of practice in class and online and those questions usually show up on the exam too. You need to read before class or you'll be lost.
Hiatt's style of teaching is pisspoor at best. She was "experimenting" this semester with more discussion in class to have people learn by arguing and testing our understanding; however, at 8:30 am in a lecture of 250, that doesn't happen and we all waste our time. I was petty enough to track it and 35% of class time was her not teaching.
Her lectures make no sense. She says things like "you need to know this" and then doesn't explain the concept at all. You have to teach yourself everything. Her exams are all application questions over material you don't talk about in class, and there is homework constantly. I don't think there was a single thing I learned from Dr. Hiatt.
Life 120 is difficult, but it is possible to get an A. Unfortunately Dr. Hiatt fails to do a good job explaining the core concepts, therefore it is important to read the textbook if you want a good grade. While Dr. Hiatt's lectures are confusing and pointless she does ask daily clicker questions for a grade so it is necessary to show up to class
Make sure you read the textbook BEFORE class begins or you will be lost in her lectures. She expects you to already know the material when she is describing it so if you do not then you will be lost. The material from notes in class is not the material on the tests. Make sure to take notes while reading and doing the homework assignments.
You can Dr Hiatt really cares about her students. Everyone failed the first test and she gave multiple opportunities to get points back. You have to show up to lectures because of the clicker points but its not worth paying attention to because she is all over the place. Would HIGHLY recommend attending at least 2 SIs a week, they are very helpful
Dr. Hiatt is a super intellectual person who wants you to do well in her class. She goes over material quickly, but always posts her powerpoints on Canvas. She gives out LOTS of extra credit, at least I was not expecting it. She replies very quickly to emails and is very funny. Take the practice quizzes and tests and you know questions on the tests
Dr. Hiatt really knows her stuff when it comes to Biology. That being said, during lectures she tends to go super fast and explains things quickly, so it's pointless to take notes. If you really want to pass, you'll more than likely have to teach yourself everything by reading the book and doing the endless amounts of homework assignments given.
Dr Hiatt was not my professor for this class, Khan Academy & Google were. She's a lovely & intelligent, but is terrible at breaking down complex ideas. Most of class we try to answer questions she hasn't explained yet in groups, which is not ideal at 830am. Or ever. Just do the hw, show up to class, & pray you googled the right things for the test.
Intelligent teacher but when it comes to connecting ideas and answering questions she doesn't really help. Most of the homework is google-able and the tests are easy if you google quizlets of her exams. :/ One thing that she did offer was A LOT of extra credit, which I personally loved. Take advantage of coming to class to get those easy points too
Dr. H is awesome! She is always there to help if you need it. If you actually read and do the work she expects you to do before class the lectures are easy to follow. I was really struggling at the beginning and met with her and she totally helped me turn things around!
It was obvious she cared about us and wanted us to understand the material and lightened the class mood often with jokes/puns. But every class was a lecture and she went through the slides extremely quickly. I would recommend taking book notes before you get to the chapter in class. The practice exams assigned on canvas are questions on the test!
Dr. Hiatt's lectures were difficult to follow and weren't helpful in furthering your understanding on the subject, and although this was frustrating there are several ways to receive an easy A. Questions on the practice quizzes were often found on the test, and various extra credit opportunities were provided, so take advantage of all of them!
Dr. Hiatt was such a caring lady, I loved her for that, I always felt I could go up to her and ask her anything. Her teaching on the other hand was very hard to follow. I usually ended up reading the book on my own and watching a lot of youtube videos. Go to every class because she does questions. Easy class if you just study!
Anna Hiatt is super nice and cares about her students, but her lectures and style of teaching could be improved quit a bit. I was basically my own professor. She does give a lot of extra credit, so even if you fail an exam your grade won't suffer.
The entire semester wasnt that bad, but when it came to the final she screwed us over. My grade went down and ENTIRE letter grade from a A to a B. I almost lost my mind. I talked to other students and they experienced similar things. Im extremely upset over this because my grade never dipped below a 92% before this.
I had 103 for the majority of the semester (god knows how) and ended with an a. I taught myself everything. The lectures were useless but you have to go for clicker questions. Not great at explaining topics; find quizlets that help bc some questions are the same. Some Qs are way too intense on exams and we were never taught stuff like it.
Dr. Hiatt needs to work on her lecturing skills. She can come across as confusing and is typically not engaging during class. With that said, she more than makes up for this by being an amazing, not to mention friendly and extraordinarily caring, resource when you meet with her one on one. Plus the extra credit even though she says there is none
Wasn't a great professor. Spent a lot of time reading from a powerpoint. Wasn't very accessible for help. Constant clicker points and pop quizzes in class.
I loved hiatt. Her tests are really tough but she offers a lot of extra credit to help you out. Shes very big on attendance but that wasnt a problem for me. Shes always willing to help and goes into detail to explain things. She genuinely wants you to learn.
A ton of homework and very fast paced lectures for an introductory class. This class is one of my only classes in my 3 years where I ever failed an exam. They are very difficult if you don't study, and sometimes even if you do. She prides herself on having a difficult class. I consistently went to office hours, and I still had issues in the class.
She is super nice, but the whole class is lecture and clicker questions which can get kinda boring. Definitely study for the tests because they're more difficult but she does offer a lot of extra credit.
I would not take LIFE120 from Dr. Hiatt, try to find another section or take it a different semester. This class was not freshman-level. The exams were all application type and the topics were not properly covered in class. The textbook was of no help. Prepare to meet with her weekly for extra exam points. She doesn't curve. Find a tutor.
Anna Hiatt overall is horrible at lecturing, but if you want to recieve a good grade you need to put a lot of effort into the class. You pretty much have to teach yourself everything (which I did and that is the only way I recieved my grade). BUT THE AMOUNT OF EXTRA CREDIT IS WORTH IT. because of all the extra credit i only missed 10 test points!!!
She's a really good professor. As long as you go back and read over each chapter and take good notes during lecture, you got this! You're split up into groups during lecture and can receive a lot of points back on each exam through group work! Need to attend class or have someone that you can text for the Learning Catalytics codes for participation
Dr. Hiatt was eh. LIFE120 is a hard course, and Dr. Hiatt did a poor job at explaining the material thoroughly. In order to truly understand the material, it was necessary for me to watch videos and seek outside help. She is a very kind woman when you request help. If it wasn't for the extra credit from the SI, I would not have kept an A.
You teach yourself everything. Teacher doesnt seem like she enjoys her job. Doesnt respond that fast.
Seems like a nice person, but she does NOT know how to teach a class. You basically have to teach yourself everything, so if you can't do that I would definitely take this class with a different professor. The exams have stuff you dont cover in book or in class in them. Definitely dont take online if you have the possibility.
I just CANNOT. She is kinda scary, ngl. This year, her emails have been very passive-aggressive for no real reason.
Dr. Hiatt, quite frankly, has been one one of the worst professors I have had. In her emails, she is straight up aggressive, getting upset over many things. Like all of us, I can see that she is upset about this pandemic, but she doesn't need to take that out on her students. One time, she sent an email about learning styles and how they are false
Shes so passive aggressive with her emails and announcements and in class. She does not respect students or care about them. Which considering the pandemic going on she should try to be more considerate. She has been at best abrasive and at worst rude. She doesnt teach at expects her students to know everything off the get go.
When the professor says she won't teach the homework material before it's due, you know you've got issues. Biology isn't a subject that can be easily self taught. I feel attacked in every email as she blames us for the issues in the class instead of maybe thinking there's something wrong with her "teaching style". Which is not teaching at all.
Teaching myself biology is an awful process, which is not helped by Dr. Hiatts passive-aggressive emails and snarky remarks. In lecture, the things we talk over are no where to be found on the exams, which consist of questions that make little sense. Although she does give extra credit, I do not recommend taking LIFE120 from Dr. Hiatt.
She would have wrong answers on our homework and when we put down the right answer it was wrong in her eyes. She has said learning styles are not a thing. A family member dying is not an excuse to not take a test. So I took a test an hour after finding out my grandma died. Her and her assistant professor argued over which question was right on quiz
I took LIFE120 through Dr. Hiatt and she's the professor that your high school teachers warn you about. She was rude to her students through online classes and didn't care about how much she was laying on us at one time. Many rude emails were sent to us about how we were one of her worst classes, but she never made adjustments to help us.
Shes a nice person, but she doesnt really teach. Ver confusing, and sometimes makes students feel dumb when they dont understand topics.
She is an awful teacher who is incredibly rude and passive aggressive towards us. She repeatedly told us how we were such terrible students but never tried to teach us better. She assumed we had an understanding of biochem and genetics and then got mad when we didnt understand. One of the worst teachers Ive ever had. If you have her ABORT!!!
This was a terrible class to take. She didn't help much when asked questions about the information. She could not adjust her teaching for Online class. This was the worst class I have taken and do not want to be with this teacher again. She could be very rude at times when she wouldn't even teach us. Exams are nothing like what we learn at lecture.
this class did not need to be nearly as hard as it was. Hiatt did not know how to switch to an online course and that was abundantly clear. we paid for a three-credit-hour class and instead, we got a textbook access code and one 'lecture' a week which was just a short lecture and then a group activity over stuff we didn't understand anyway.
The professor all your high school teachers warned about. Would rather send us a 2 paragraph announcement about how learning styles dont exist instead of conforming to COVID-19 and helping the students out. If you have her good luck.
Not very good at the online lecture and could not adjust to online learning. She said very long passive aggressive emails about how this class of student was horrible but didnt do anything to help. Would not recommend taking her during the pandemic.
2 out of the 3 days she was supposed to be teaching us we were just reading the book having to teach ourselves. And on the days we did have "student-teacher interaction" we are in breakout rooms with other students, once again teaching ourselves! Do not take this course with her if you are actually looking to learn and benefit from this class.
the WORST professor i have ever had. This is my second time taking her course and yet again failed. She is horrible. Self taught course, if you dont read the book word for word she'll for sure fail you. Was not understanding with COVID. Do not recommend her at all.
I was not a fan of this class, and all of the people I took this class with would have a similar opinion. I learned nothing from this class and I am sorry if you have to take this for your major. Be prepared to teach yourself almost everything in the class because she hardly teaches, and expects you to know everything. Overall, horrible class.
I would rather get ran over by a semi, attacked by a group of mountain lions, and get my fingers slammed in a car door than take this class again. This class is much harder than a freshman entry level biology. It does not help the professor does not care to help out. You basically teach yourself everything, or you don't learn. Tests are difficult
Exams are difficult.
Anna Hiatt barely taught this class and just expected everyone to know the material. Tests are not curved (even when everyone does bad) she just "re-evaluates" specific questions. The test are very hard and you should be prepared to study the material from the second you start the class.
She is so hard, doesn't teach anything!! Take LIFE 120 with another proffessor.
I met with her several times after failing the first exam and she was super nice and helpful. She even commented on my notes! It seems like a lot of work bc you have to watch her videos and read the book, but it's not hard once you figure it out. Just talk to her and ask questions she's not a monster.
Dr. Hiatt is very nice, approachable and knowledgeable on topics, however her lecturing skills are kind of lacking. BEST ADVICE is to take THOROUGH NOTES over the weekly chapters from the TEXTBOOK. Most concepts on the tests come from there. For reference, I took about 3 hrs of notes/week, which paid off because I had an "A" test average.
I want to thank chegg and khan academy as they are the only reason I passed. I took all AP classes in H.S. and have never had this bad of a class. There is no real teaching and I have no idea what the tests were based on because it definitely WAS NOT from the textbook. We only had 1 class a week and even then we were in small groups with no prof.
Probably the worst teacher to start my freshman year of college with, especially during the pandemic. A 4 credit class and without counting the Monday review, she "taught" once a week (aka put us in small groups where we had to teach ourselves what was going on). Very passive-aggressive in her emails and announcements to the class. -10/10.
Doesn't teach, tough grader, lots of readings/ assignments, expect passive aggressive emails/ announcements, tough exams. Definition of a "weed out" professor/course. I've lost way too much sleep, declined mental health and experienced unnecessary stress as a result from this class. Not trying to spread hate with this post, just warning others.
Hiatt had a lot of lot of homework assigned that was hard and didn't have much to do with the material that we were learning in class. She never actually made any of the assignments they were all from the internet which made it easy to do them.
Hiatt is a nice professor but doesn't teach well in my opinion. I relied heavily on reading the book chapters to understand anything. Her lectures are confusing but attendance is important because you get points in class for participation.
The worst lecturer EVER! Really, she's more of a slide reader. I'm not sure she understood the stuff she was trying to explain. She seemed to have no sympathy for students. Everything was made more difficult. It wasn't worth it, I couldn't make sense out of anything.
Dr. Hiatt is the type of professor to read the slides word for word during lecture. If you don't read the book very carefully, you will not pass the class, the book is the only way I learned anything from this class. I got my notes from an outside source because her slides were not filled with information nor did she explain things effectively.
don't ever take a class with her. the "learning mastery" is the most bs grading system i have ever been the victim of. sometimes I'm unsure if she actually knows what she's talking about or she just looks up slides online. she's a nice woman but the way that she "teaches" doesn't do it for me. if rate my professor had a 0/5 i would use it.
Dr. Hiatt is an overall very caring professor, wants us to like the LIFE 120 contents by doing in-class exercises (ICX). Sometimes excessive time was spent on them, less time on the chapter contents. The learning outcome is great, didn't even need the final exam to get an A+ because of it. A lot of hard work, prepare to take this course seriously.
Switch professors. Reading the textbook is the only way you learn. She does not teach in class, usually just gives complicated examples using terms no one understands and you leave the lecture not knowing what you just listened to. The way she grades is absolutely foul and grades are locked. I had to teach myself everything. TA's are valid though.
This is the worst class I have taken so far, and I cannot stand her learning mastery grading system. Despite what you get on tests, you might not get the right questions right, and therefore suffer in class. Absolutely switch professors if you have her.
Hiatt is the worst professor I have ever had. Her grading style is poor and does not show growth or understanding. (I think she just doesn't want to grade our work...) The exams are hard but if you read the textbook you'll be fine. I never went to class and ended with an A so obviously its not vital to go. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIATT!!!!!!!!
She is intimidating in front of the large lecture but is very kind and helpful if you have any questions. Very considerate and just wants you to succeed. The subject itself is difficult but it is easy to pass if you show effort.
She was not the best at explaining topics in lecture so if you genuinely want to learn you will have to rely heavily on the book and I would recommend attending the supplemental learning instructions. The way she grades is weird but makes it so almost everyone can pass. I put zero effort into this class, didn't understand a thing and still got an A
She's literally terrible, choose any other teacher. She has her own grading scale and you can't even check your grade. You won't learn anything in lecture, and is so unhelpful
Hiatt's "objective-based grading" means you'll probably get an A but you have to teach yourself. Lectures are mediocre at best but you still have to go because you do a lot of graded in-class group work. If you absolutely have to take her section, hope you get a good group and read the book.
The lectures are dull and uninformative, as her recollection of biology is questionable at times. The tests do not adequately assess the learning of students, because they are short and heavily weigh the minutiae as much or even more than the main topics of the units. Fortunately, the grading is convoluted, so 3/4 of her class can "earn" an A.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. Her test are nothing over the material she teaches and theyre worded so complicated that I think shes trying to confuse herself. There are 2 other instructors for this class TAKE IT WITH THEM. They dont have this complicated grading system. You will spend hours studying and the test will not reflect it
Tests would often cover materials that weren't covered in classes. This class does not have a typical grading scale (A,B,C,D,F) instead you have to master skills based on your correctness on tests and in-class activities. I didn't learn much, but I got an A.
This professor did not teach what was on the test and would provide no sort of outline guide that would help predict what would be on the tests and quizzes. The lectures were extremely fast paced, the lectures did not line up with the course textbook.Transfer out of this class and switch to the same class with a different professor.
Her lectures don't teach much and you pretty much will only learn from TA's and the book
She grades based on concepts so your actual grade doesn't matter as long as you get 75% of each concept you get an A
Grading system is based on mastery, so as long as you have most concepts mastered you're fine. You teach yourself outside of class using the book, then her lectures expand on what you taught yourself. Tests are weird, I spent hours studying for one, thought I understood, and still failed the test. Take this class with someone else if you can.
lowsey grading system. seems as she doesn't know what she talking about. doesn't know how to teach.
Overall LIFE 120 is hard but take Hiatt as her different grading system made my grade an A. My friends told me the other professor who taught their LIFE120 was tough. One bad thing about Hiatt is she talks pretty fast for lectures so I used youtube mainly to teach me topics. Overall LIFE 120 sucks and is hard but it sucks less with Hiatt.
I had heard about other professors and I tried taking Life120 with someone else but they were all full. Even if you study for the test you probably won't do well. The grading system is different and it sucks. She also won't update grades for a few weeks or more.
Took this class a year ago. Confusing grading system. When switched back to traditional grading system my grade raised from a D to an A overnight. Unnecessary stress for a class I was otherwise doing well in.
Hiatt's lectures are useless and she does not know how to teach. You will be teaching yourself the information out of the textbook and it is a LOT to read. So if you take this class with her just be prepared from the start to be reading a ton and take good notes. Her grading system is confusing, but I had an A at the end so I can't complain.
Professor Hiatt does not know what she is talking about 90% of the time, you basically had to teach yourself. Would not recommend taking.
I had her a few years ago. She was really harsh on grading and changed the semster after I was in her class which made me mad. She was very rude to me whenever I met with her or had questions. The tests are so much harder than class material so read the book and learn vocab.
Test were way harder than what we learned in class. Grading was super confusing and always messed up. She did allow 2 attempts on tests. Basically you'll have to teach yourself.
A lot of people give Dr. Hiatt a bad rap however her grading scale is set up to work toward your advantage. As long as you hit the main objectives on tests, you will do just fine. I took this class during my first semester in college and got an A+ without much preparation for tests. Go to class, do the work, and you will be just fine.
wants her students to do well. The lectures are boring and not super helpful. confusing. her practice tests are fairly accurate. 2 attempt all MC exams. Use the TA's to your advantage, go over 1st attempt with them. The class isn't that bad if you just put a little extra work in. Theres definitely a lot of busy work though - find a friend for hmwk
Hiatt was a very boring lecturer and her slides she read and posted were very unhelpful. It was hard to take notes ever because she would just talk and move on. The tests were in the DLC and weren't too bad because you could set up a zoom and go over what you missed. Not hard to get a good grade, but didn't learn much.
You are graded on attendance and participation in lectures and a large majority of lecture time is spend to group work and you have to basically teach yourself making the lectures feel like a waist of time.
There are so many different things going on as far as assignments for class, it gets confusing. If you just read the book, there's no need to pay attention, but you still need to go for the in-class assignments that are given almost every day. I'd bring other classwork to do during lecture.
Lectures are not well presented nor make any sense. Homework seems to be copy and pasted from the book. Have to complete previous assignments before you can even look at the next assignment. Overall 0/10 way to teach.
tests are hard and she does not prepare you well. you will have to do lots of work outside of class. prepare to teach yourself. her lectures are very fast paced and she does not explain things well at all.
terrible lectures, hard test, no good study materials, quizzes every week, cancels class for no reason (one time was because she was "too cold to drive to work"), bad at responding to emails. if you can get the other life 120 professor I highly recommend because this lady was not good at her job. I cried every day because of this class.
I personally didn't like the way she taught lectures. I felt like I had to try and listen to everything she was saying and write it down as quickly as possible. The homework wasn't very helpful, and to be honest, I felt like I learned more about the class in my lab than I did in the actual lecture.
Very easy to get along with and approachable. Tells jokes on Wednesdays and is an avid Husker fan (GOOO BIGGG REDDD, Go Big Red)!!! Allows 1 retake on each of the exams and will review your first attempt with you if you schedule an appointment ahead of time. Most of the "homework" is just a completion grade. Go to class:)
Do not expect to understand any of the lectures. She is very kind, but does not know how to teach this subject. You get 2 tries on each test but the average is taken. You use learning catalytics every day and you have to get them right to be counted towards your attendance. Would not recommend.
have to teach yourself everything, so if you take this class be prepared to learn more from crash course then the actual lectures. Her tests also has things shes never talked about, and things from multiple chapters ago so your memory needs to be good or else youll do bad.
The class truly isn't terrible, but you will feel as if you are failing the entire semester until you find out you are on track for an A with few requirements left. The teaching style is hard to understand if you have never used it before.
Her lectures lacked content and even when they did have an adequate amount of content she moved too fast for any of the information to be useful. I wouldn't have attended any of her lectures if she didn't take attendance for a grade. My tip: read the textbook during her lectures, you'll learn more.
Dr. Hiatt speaks too quickly during lectures, making it difficult to take notes. She assumes that students have a background in chemistry, so those without it will struggle. However, she does offer two attempts on tests and provides opportunities for extra credit. Despite this, I would not choose to take this class with her again.
Super ez, trust me just read the book, I never listened during the lectures and ended up with an A+. Just go to lectures to get the learning catalytic points. She's a super caring professor, I don't know why people are giving her bad ratings. Most assignments are if you get 70+ percent, you get the 100. Pick her to do Life120, best decision.
I would assume that many people's negative experiences with this professor stem from their own inability to read the textbook and take notes outside of class. Lecture summarized information from the textbook. Lots of group work as well, but the problems discussed were helpful and similar to exam material.
It's a very easy A honestly. Almost all the questions on the exams is found in the book. It's a lot of material in a semester but that is how all science classes are. Read the book, go to class and you should be good for a great grade. She gives two attempts for the quizzes/homeworks, exams and has plus points that boosts up your final grade.
Her lectures were not the best, but the 2 attempts on tests and practice tests made it easy to get a good grade. Practice test questions will appear almost verbatim on the exam. It is not hard to get a good grade in this class as long as you are attending and participating in class, although her lectures do not give much motivation to do so.
As long as you do the work and study a little bit before exams, you can easily get an A or higher. The lectures are long and not as helpful, but the TA sessions and practice exams give you the info you need. If you keep up with the class, you probably won't have to study much.
Quick overview: 2 attempts for tests; Grade is averaged Review results after test in office hours All tests are MC / T/F Test questions are reworded quiz questions Lecture is review, not note orientated. READ BEFORE CLASS Attendance necessary for Learning Catalytic points Learning Catalytic software can be janky, beware
Hiatt is a caring professor and takes time to explain things. PLEASE read the textbook before the unit starts and take notes, as the lectures are more for review. The tests are somewhat difficult; you just have to go over your notes and you'll be fine. Go to class and do the learning catalytics. They give so many points for doing your work.
Lectures are useless and basically review so read the textbook thoroughly. Go to lectures though because clicker points are a big part of grade. Exams are hard but if you overprepare you should do at least okay. I do not recommend this professor.
Professor Hiatt led a very confusing class. She wouldn't lecture, instead would just talk and not explain anything. Tests were not anything like we learned in class or like the practice tests provided.
Reading the textbook is "required" but you don't even have to do that. As long as you pay attention and take notes in lectures and do the (very useful) practice quizzes, you'll be prepared for the exams. The exams are really good at testing if you know the material. MUCH rather have an exam-oriented class like this than a busywork-oriented class.
The lectures may not be the most engaging, but if you stay on top of the readings and participate in class, you can do well. Exams have multiple attempts, and using tools like Unstuck study alongside the textbook can make prep a breeze. Overall, a fair class if you put in the work.
I took her class in my freshman year, and it was a basic class. She likes her students to know the details as they will be asked in future courses. I was given 2 attempts for the exam and with the same questions. Even if you lose one, you gotta win the second time for sure (if you study).
