She is really loves to take off as many points as she can on tests and homework.
A very difficult class, despite the interesting material (applied physics). Dr. Howard was basically a terrible instructor. Seems irritated by anything other than just lecturing. Doesn't answer questions much! Goes through material as fast as possible. Her use of mostly electronic means of testing students also proves to be frustrating/difficult.
Possibly the worst professor I've ever had in any subject. Refuses to assist at all whatsoever outside of class; does horrible job of explaining material; once became angry because class average was higher than a true bell curve on one particular test.
Dr. Howard is not recommended unless A, you have no choice or B, you can self teach yourself on vista. All of your assignments are on the cpu and she does not lecture in class. In stead she does a quiz and example problems to "supplement" your study. She definitely has issues being helpful. Its her way or the highway.
the first day of class she asked "How many of you have heard that I'm the wicked witch of the west?" Over half the class raised their hands and she smiled... I STRONGLY advise dropping the class if you have her.
Is not helpful at all. If you ask a question, she makes it seem like you're the most ignorant person alive. Also, all homework and teaching is online, and there are quizzes to get the homework, and then quizzes after the homework about the homework. What kind of sense does that make?
Very hard- she will rock your world, and you'll have to exert some serious effort to pass her class. However, if you're in an engineering major, you *need* someone to get you a firm foundation for the classes that follow, so you'll end up thanking her later.
She was good. If you fail it is your own fault. If you don't you will learn more in this class then most of your other mae classes, which is exactly what is needed for your first engineering class.
If you are slow at taking notes, watch out. She speeds through all the materials in your lectures and you can fall behind easily. She doesn't like answering questions and will give the a very vague answer. She's very snippy. If you do get her, be sure to analyze all her online resources and go to her TA's study sessions if you want do do well.
Not qualified to teach statics. Does not understand the material.
Hands down the least helpful professor I have ever had. Practically refuses to take time to address individual concerns, yet will not miss an opportunity to remind everyone just how hard the class is. She essentially reduces this to an online, teach-yourself, class, only attendance is mandatory or you'll miss being tricked on daily quizzes
Absolutely do not take a class with here. Here's why; Her test are all TIMED computer multiple choice. Which sounds good on the surface, except you get essentially no partial credit for your answers and 50 minutes of test time, no more. You make one mistake in your calculation and you are toast in her class. Because I believe she is too lazy to a
She's actually a very good professor. Probably the best that teaches the course. People need to stop complaining and start doing their homework.
I dont understand why her rating is so low. She is an excellent teacher and actually kind of funny. All the people giving her these ratings probably failed the course and are taking out their frustration on her. If you do your homework and study the quizzes you will do well on the tests. Also there is plenty of time on the tests.
I am a senior in ME and writing this because most of the people reviewing are freshmen, Dr. Howard is a great teacher and she is very fair. If you do her HW and pay attention you will be rewarded on the tests. She may seem tough to freshmen because they havent had a real college prof before. She sets the tone for the rest of the ME classes.
Not an easy class, but still doable. At first, I didn't like Howard, but then I realized she is an extremely dedicated professor and actually very nice. Do your work and your effort will pay off.
My advice for the student who wants an A in Howard's statics class: Do lots of extra problems. Study the online moodle quizzes as the tests are similar to them in style. Don't get discouraged by clicker questions. **Ask lots of questions in class.** Dr. Howard is tough as nails but does care about teaching you if you care about learning.
Very good. Demands a lot of you but its great in preparing you for what you will be facing later in engineering. Don't get psyched out bc the subject material really isn't that hard.
In class I don't find her particularly great, but she provides so many well developed online supplements that learning the material was not a struggle at all. However, she is not particularly patient with questions in class and her homework problems are ridiculously hard compared to say...the tests.Get a good study group, and acing it will be easy.
I personally thought that she was a great teacher. Yes she's hard, but this course is a weed-out course. If you do the homework, pay attention in class, and study hard for the exams you will do pretty well. She was easy to understand and occasionally funny (in that really corny jokes way).
Not a hard concept or class but she makes it very hard. You can lose a lot of points on the tests because of sig figs. Avoid
I am definitely not a fan of her teaching style. Saw her actually work out a problem on the board maybe 3 times the whole semester. She expects you to teach yourself and can't be bothered with your questions. She is the most condescending teacher I've ever had.
She expects you to take full advantage of the material on the moodle site. Doesn't particularly work out problems in class and moves fast. Test are easier than hw
Anna Howard is disrespectful and fails to realize that students are adults trying to better themselves and deserve respect. During the final, a student asked how many sig figs to use; she laughed and walked away. That is a good example of how she addresses most students. Class is passable, but avoid her if possible. Terrible person.
Not only was she completely useless as a teacher, she did not care at all about our grades. She refused to take time to answer questions during class and wanted us all to teach ourselves thereby doing her job. My room mate had nightmares about this course, literally.
Taking this class was like hugging a cactus. Howard is condescending, disrespectful and unapproachable. Students are treated with contempt. All you need to know about her is her personal website url: annahoward.com. She is a witch.
I honestly wish that I could give her negative helpfulness. Her attitude when answering questions was horrible. I honestly don't have a problem with the class, I got a 100 on test 1, but I could not stand this teacher. She was rude, condescending, and unhelpful. Every question that was asked in class she answered as if it was a stupid question.
She is awesome....exams are really easy and not worth that much.
In my 4th year of ChE at State I thought statics wouldn't be a big issue to take as a tech. elective. However, Howard forced her learning style onto everyone, even though she admitted not all people learn the same and she was condescending towards any student who asked a question. She has made the class unnecessarily difficult.
Prof. Howard comes off as brusque and callous, but she really knows the material and can be funny. Her lectures and in-class quizzes are very fast paced, so it can be hard to keep up. Bad attitude towards questions when lecturing unless she thinks it's a "good" question, but ask after class to get better response. Do HW+read+study=good. 3 SIGFIGS!
If you have to change your entire schedule to avoid her class, do it. it's well worth it. She is very knowledgeable in the subject, her teaching method is awful. She admits to being a little sarcastic, but at times it doesn't translate too well with every student, in various situations.
She's very blunt but she has to be. There's a lot of material to cover and, especially in the flipped classes, not a lot of time for instruction. If you do your homework, Topic quizzes, etc (basically do what you're supposed to), her class is straightforward. She's also 10000X more helpful at her office hours after class. Just come prepared.
Dr. Anna Howard is an excellent teacher she is willing to help in anyway possible if you ask her, and completing the work that she asks you to do allows a good grade. She also provides a seemingly limitless amount of material to help understand the material on your own. Go to class, do the work, she will help you, and you will get a good grade.
This past semester (Fall 2013) there was an option to take the class completely online, only going to a class on Wednesday nights to take a test. Overall the material was not too difficult but you have to do the work she assigns you. Personally, I did not like taking the class online because there were times where I felt lost. But you make like it!
Horrible professor. She has this "flipped class" thing where you do all the learning on your own online through these stupid videos, and then she just gives practice problems in class. In other words, she never actually teaches you the material in person. Probably the worst professor I've had. Doesn't even do her job
3 days into this class i feel like harry potter trying fight Lord Voldemort.
If you don't feel stupid going into this class you will definitely feel stupid coming out. Between the tough topic and the callous remarks of the professor it is almost guaranteed that you will feel like an idiot every day after class. Also if you feel prepared before an exam, be prepared to feel like an idiot for feeling prepared when you leave.
Words homework problems so you don't know what she's asking for. Good luck.
It is important to realize that this is a weeder course for MAE. Howard is decent at teaching the material but comes off as extremely blunt. I don't think that the is intentionally mean to students but she definitely comes off as it sometimes. Be prepared to make some disappointing grades unless you are an extremely dedicated student.
This class has more quizzes and hw than any other course I have every taken & I already have a degree. There are lots of online video lectures and worked problems which are helpful. Tests are on the computer so no partial credit and only 50 mins for about 10 problems. You need to know the material REALLY well to do well even tho it's an into class
Being in Dr. Howard's class is not the most enjoyable thing, nor the easiest. However, after taking her class and moving to other professors, you realize that you actually learned the material, and would almost rather her teach your new class as much as it pains you to admit it.
This is a flipped class, which means that you have to watch brief lectures online before class, and then you work problems in class. This can get annoying, particularly if you don't like to do statics every 2 days. Dr. Howard comes off as very blunt, and tends to give people a hard time for asking questions. Take the HW very seriously.
Anna Howard is un-courteous, un-reasonably difficult, rude to talk with, and impossible to get along with. She is un-necessarily harsh when it comes to discussions about grading. Unfortunately this class is required for many people. So my advise to you is DO the homework, work for 2 hours per problem, trust me it will help and review the answers.
This is a flipped class. That mean you will have to learn everything by yourself; you will only do practice problems in class. She is not very helpful when it actually comes to learning the material. Also, she is not a very pleasant person; she has a very annoying personality. If she were our age, she would be that annoying person you try to avoid.
Dr. Howard is probably the most infamous MAE professor. Her class can be tough, but about in line with other engineering courses. Some people don't like her somewhat abrasive demeanor, but Dr. Howard wants her students to succeed and will help them do so. Overall one of the better professors I've had in the department.
Anna Howard is a good teacher. Her flipped class design works pretty well, you just have to put in the work. I enjoyed going to class because it was interactive (you work on a whiteboard all class with a group). She gives tough tests and you must study for them thoroughly. However, she is very knowledgeable and is willing to explain things.
Dr. Howard is a great professor but Statics is a tough subject. You will need to put in a lot of effort into the class. Make sure you attend class and do your homework on time. Tests are tough and she doesn't give you solutions to the tests. There's lots of homework. Get ready to work hard.
Dr. Howard is the toughest teacher I have had so far in my college career. Her homework assignments are extremely hard and her tests are challenging. However, if you manage to survive her class you will never forget the material.
The class is flipped, but it's really not that bad. She goes over examples in class, which is all you really need help with. I watched lectures on the bus on the way over. You're put into 3 man groups and rearranged throughout the semester. BE SURE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS. Letting your group mates do the work for you is a great way to fail.
This class is a flipped class, meaning you teach yourself.. The teaching myself part was not so bad until the material started to get difficult. Im not going to understand brand new material without some explanation & a walk through of the material. Class time is spent doing difficult examples, which sometimes dont help at all. Tutoring's essential
Anna Howard is not helpful. She is not interested in her students. She hates questions. She hates her students. She hates everything.
She forces you to conform to her learning methods. You fail if you miss 5 classes. Textbook reading & notes, video lectures, class work, online homework, on paper homework, and group projects are mandatory. DO NOT LET YOU TAKE NOTES IN CLASS. Unwelcoming personality. Ignores most in-class questions. Over-all worst professor I've had at N.C. State.
Statics is class that is required for most of the engineering students at state. If you can choose between MAE statics and CE Statics.... TAKE CE. Anna Howard is the only prof who teaches MAE Statics, and she is awful. She is mean, degrading, and has no respect from her students. There are no notes in class and the TAs just stand around awkwardly.
Very tough grader. Flipped class method. You have to teach yourself, and she makes it pretty clear early on. I struggled in the class and thought I was going to just get past the C- until I started teaching myself. I hated her when I first started the course, but as time went on I saw why she is the way she is.
At first, Dr. Howard seems tough and unapproachable but if you use her office ours you find out she isn't all that bad. Her homework was the hardest part of the class and you have to figure out a lot on your own. It wasn't a great way to learn but It is very effective if you put in the work. It ended up being my favorite course of the semester.
Tough class but Ms. Howard is a very fair instructor. Uses a flipped classroom approach and is very effective at teaching and fostering understanding of the topic
Anna Howard was sent to NC State by Satan himself to punish engineering students for their sinful ways. If you don't take this class seriously, you won't pass.
Listen, you will rarely find a teacher that works as hard as Anna Howard. Her material is handwritten, her lectures designed to teach you in a simple and straightforward manner. I should know, I had to take her class twice. The only way you fail Statics is if you don't watch the lectures and do the homework. Set aside 20+ hrs a week to work statics
This is the hardest class I ever took. This class made several students have breakdowns and regular panic attacks. NOTE: her class is nothing like other engineering classes, if you fail her class that DOES NOT mean you can't be an engineer. She makes it extra difficult
Anna Howard has a really bad reputation, but at the end of the day she's one of the most thoughtful and knowledgeable (and hilarious) professors at State. Students dislike her mainly because of the amount of work she assigns. While it is a lot (6+ hours a week), the course itself is definitely not hard if you prepare for class and pay attention.
Anna Howard is a teacher that knows her stuff. If you want to actually learn statics take her. If you are looking for an A in a class then don't. She seems to be unapproachable by her personality but one on one she will help. You will come out of this class knowing statics but your GPA might take a hit. Homework takes forever and hard.
Anna Howard is often rude to students but she also has been teaching for a long time and very clear about what you need to know. She does not provide a whole lot of review material for tests but she is helpful in other ways. If you put in the work for her class you will do fine. Although she is difficult, she will force you to learn the material
Class is set up poorly and seems to intentionally confuse students. Just makes you come to class every morning to tell you how stupid you are and not teach you anything. Class was only difficult, because she expects students to read her mind.
There is no mistaking it, Dr. Howard makes you work for your grade. I spent 24+ hours a week on statics homework (not including studying). She is rude and unapproachable, but at the end of the day, her students come out of it knowing statics REALLY well. If you dedicate all your time to statics, you MIGHT get an A- :-) good luck fellow engineers!!!
I received my worst grade in college so far from Dr. Howard. The homework requires multiple hours to do, so plan for that. The tests are very difficult. You might get bad grades on them, but don't drop. I got a 45, 60, and 75 on the tests, in that order. You'll learn statics. Go to her office hours too. At the end of it, you'll know statics.
The flipped class is good, as long as you watch the videos before class. The topics here are foundational for lots of other classes, so make sure you try. Remember, this is a weed out class so she has to grade pretty hard, but you can do well if you put in the work.
She's just rude. testy heavy class. too many homework/quizzes
The class is hard, plain and simple but it isn't impossible. Looking back after finishing the class did I hate it while I was taking it, yes. But unlike most of my other classes taken at the same time I actually learned and remember the material. Lots of homework, challenging tests but for better or worse you really learn the material.
This class is a very challenging class due to the nature of the subject. There is so much to learn in one semester. Anna Howard has a harsh, realistic approach that will either leave you burned or very knowledgeable in this subject. If you are looking to skimp by and do no work good luck, lol, maybe engineering at state is not for you.
I had Dr. H Fall 2017. Taking the class was rough: lots of hwk, intense lectures, and many times of total confusion. I strongly disliked Dr. Howard but, after moving on, I realized she is one of the best profs at NCSU. She is very passionate about the subject matter and leaves you KNOWING statics. She's not actually mean, she's just jokingly sassy
Anna Howard is a tough teacher, she expects a lot of work from you in the form of daily homework and quizzes but she is one of the most caring teachers I have ever had. She really does want you to succeed and actually cares about you past your grade. If you put in the work she asks for, you'll be okay.
I respect Dr. Howard and her handwritten materials which do make you work a lot and cannot rely on chegg or anything. But she often makes mistakes in her materials and makes you take the blame of it. She doesn't respect her students and her lectures are just designed to tell you that you know nothing about statics.
Dr. Howard seems like she cares about your learning, but her method of teaching says otherwise. Seems like she has too many students to teach in each semester. Test are very fast and you DO NOT have time to check your work. On paper HW's are overly hard & you do not get solutions to them. Take CE 214 if you can: in-class CE > flipped MAE.
She uses a flipped classroom, where you learn everything outside of class, and then after that you have 2 homeworks per day in class. I have never failed a test in STEM in my college career, and failed two so far. I would recommend taking CE instead of MAE statics
She assigns on paper homework that's due every day of class. You get 24hrs to do each homework assignment. It's hell. The tests are much easier than the homework, but still very hard. I have a lot of respect for the way she has the class set up, but she is disrespectful. She has bad social skills, she will berate you, talk to you like a child, etc.
If you have to take MAE206 with Howard. One word. Run. I've never failed a class. Ever. Ive always done extremely well. Until her class. You have to learn everything by yourself. She talks down to you and acts like you're an idoit. Most of the time I left her class not knowing the answers to most of the problems we solved .
Dr. Howard's extreme lack of social skills and basic human empathy make her unqualified to teach, let alone interact with other human beings. If there is any way you can get out of taking this class, do everything within your power to avoid it. If you do end up taking it, you will regret every decision you've ever made that lead to that point.
This class will drill statics into the very frame of your being. It is an excellent introduction to the kind of thinking engineers do, and Dr. Howard will make sure you know your stuff. Advice - 1. Go to her office hours, she will love you. 2. Read the textbook!!! 3. Don't take paper homework too seriously. You can dispute your HW grade with TAs!
She will fail you if you miss more than about 5 classes. Lots of group work and assigned seats. Do not take as your technical elective. You have to do lectures outside of class and just do problems in class. I felt ready for her tests since I understood all the homework and problems in class but never did well. Take another prof if possible, tbh.
This class is unorthadoxic but the expectations are made clear from the get go. There is an incredible amount of high quality online material for you, and a discussion board for you to ask questions (the professor answers round the clock). Worth your money. The professor takes academic integrity very very seriously so be on your best behavior...!
This might be the hardest class I've ever taken, but I can confidently say that I know statics well. Anna Howard is very harsh and unapproachable, but she's a good teacher and knows what she's doing. Don't get behind on homework or you'll never catch up, and I honestly used the online textbook like twice.
Dr. Howard is very blunt and rude at times, but nonetheless a great professor. She knows what she's talking about in class. She does give a lot of homework, but it isn't useless busy work and helps you actually learn the material. Statics is a difficult class, and you get out what you put in. Work hard, go to class, study and you'll do fine.
Great teacher and knows what shes talking about but shes an absolutely terrible human being. She has no respect for her students and straight up calls some of them stupid. She expects everything to be done her way or she'll take points off even if there are other correct ways to do things.
Dr. Howard is a harsh professor, but she wants to ensure you actually know the material and learn statics. Go to her office hours if you need help. Her lectures are mainly just example problems, so you have to read the textbook and watch the provided videos on your own. The on-paper HW is way harder than the tests so don't stress over it.
Great teacher, but hard class, esp. w 50-min sections. She was inspirational, I learned more than ever before. Moves fast in class, don't expect to finish probs. It's okay though, no worries. Homeworks weighted so one won't kill grade. Tests fair. Great online notes/slides/vids and best use of Moodle I've ever seen. Can't recommend enough.
she does not go into full detail during class. Expects you to know the material before she even goes over it. She doesn't even go the material and you are stuck trying to understand it with you classmate who are put in a group. She does not care about you even though she claims she does. Her office hours are a complete joke and a waste of time.
Class is taught in a flipped format; expect to teach yourself everything. Mandatory class is a waste of time b/c all we did was groupwork w/ no time to finish the problems. Got fussed at for having a pencil out during class. No feedback on homework and she refused to post solutions to her problems. Gets mad when students don't understand a concept.
Professor Howard was definitely one of the worst and hardest professors I have ever had. She is not bad at teaching, but very hard to communicate with. The tests were not too hard but since they were way to long for the time limit I got some rough grades on them. The amount of homework is unreasonable (8/week) and graded pretty harshly.
Anna is a good teacher, and it's clear she's been doing this for awhile. However she can be incredibly condescending and blunt. Her flipped classroom setup offers lots of study material, but rarely includes feedback of any kind, making it difficult to determine what to focus your learning on.
Dont take this statics with Dr. Howard. Its a terrible idea. Probably will be the hardest course youve taken up to that point, which is pretty ironic because you have to teach it to yourself(flipped classroom). Class time is useless because she is terrible at explaining concepts to students, breakout rooms are too short. Dont take this class
She was about the only teacher I had this semester that actually put any effort into the class so I appreciate that. You have to teach yourself (flipped classroom) which probably works in a normal year, however, 2020 is not a normal year. Its very hard to keep up with concepts and there is just an unholy amount of homework every day.
Let's be honest, you have no other option, she's the only one teaching this course... The class is not as bad as everyone makes it seem, I had the option so I took it asynchronous and basically just taught myself using the textbook and her resources. Just prepare to work, don't take more than 16 credit hours when you take this class.
A flipped class that didn't transition to online well. Normally you would work in groups in-person, but on Zoom you just get breakout rooms that are too short to solve the problems. She also rarely fully explains the right answers so expect to teach yourself everything burning TONS of time if you want to really learn it. Tip: Use the review page.
Dr. Howard assigns a ridiculous amount of work and is painfully slow to grade. The tests are exceedingly difficult and she is a tough grader. Getting an A in this class is possible, but would require a level of dedication that does not befit a 3-credit hour sophomore course.
Dr. Howard is a little rough on the edges, but she really cares about giving a good learning experience and made ample resources available. The homework assignments were usually pretty difficult, but I found that by the time a test came, I was more than prepared for the tests. As long as you manage to do the assignments, the class isn't too bad.
Very challenging class. Lots of dedication needed to do all the assigned work and review out of class. Tons of work before each lecture, which is group problem session that tends to not have enough time. Homework makes the tests easy, but find a friend to drown in the work together and make the class more bearable. She does care about your success.
She's just very particular about very menial things overall not the worst just an annoying type of person.
She starts class 5 to 10 minutes early every day and she expects you to already have joined 2 separate and simultaneous zoom meetings. Attendance is mandatory and honestly if you miss one thing, it will affect your grade. Her homework is due 3 days a week 2 times each day. The harder of the 2 is due first and both are due during other classes.
The class involves a lot of home work usually about 2 hours for every hour of class. And while the homework can be hard the tests aren't too bad. If you're willing to put in the time this class isn't too bad, but its not an easy A.
A good thing about this class is their is a lot of accessible information on the subject she provides. However, there is a large amount of useless assignments that are way to difficult and time consuming for a 3 credit hour entry class. An A is possible but it takes an amount of work that most students don't have to devote.
Howard is hard, and this class is a lot of work. If you can do all the work, you'll do okay, but the amount of work is way more than 3 credit hours. Tests aren't too hard if you don't get stressed. It is decently well organized, and there is no lack of support if you need it, but the biggest thing is the sheer amount of time she takes.
The class requires a lot of extra work, between 2-3 hours each class, and its a flipped class meaning actually going to class is useless, but very required. It is very easy to get behind but the material you learn is still quite useful. This class is a necessary evil at NCSU engineering but you will not enjoy it.
She is probably the most organized and prepared teacher I have every had. She can be very intimidating, but she has lots of experience with teaching this class. You will definitely learn the material.
This course should really be worth more than 3 hours. There is a lot, and I mean a lot, of homework assigned essentially every other day. That can really be a burden to your schedule with other classes. The good thing is the homework is very helpful for preparing you for the exams. Howard is a bit intimidating but she wants to make sure you learn.
There is truly an obnoxious amount of homework. I am in 14 credit hours and this class takes up more of my time than the other 11 credit hours combined. On top of that she is truly not a kind person at all and rarely answers your questions in office hours. I guess the benefit is that by the end you have thicker skin and kind of know statics.
Anna Howard is by far the worst teacher/professor I have ever had.. I have no clue how she still has a job. I received As and Bs all through my AP HS classes and college classes so far EXCEPT this one.. I'm FAILING. She doesn't teach in class and only has students work in groups and gives 6 online quizzes and 3 on paper homework's a week.
HORRIBLE Professor. Anne Howard is the single reason I may switch Colleges next semester. In HS I had a 4.4 GPA taking all honors & ap classes & she makes those teachers look like Harvard Professors. Wanna actually learn? Better watch YouTube because her classes consist of ONLY study groups working out problems. This is on top of 9 quizzes a week.
Anna Howard doesn't teach a thing in class and simply puts students into groups to work out problems on a slideshow. She gives 6 quizzes and 3 written homework's every week.. and best believe these aren't for completion. Avoid this Professor at all costs if you want to keep your sanity and not study 40 hours for a quiz and come out with a 37.
"Flipped" class in which you watch lecture videos and complete preparation quizzes before class - however, they're short and don't contribute much. Class is a constant time crunch to work through prepared examples and answer Top Hat questions. Tests are **vaguely** similar to homework assignments. She is unsympathetic to the struggles of the class.
Claims the course is difficult because it is students' first real experience with engineering, and thus might be the first time we've ever been challenged. Instruction is minimal while criticism is abundant. If you don't understand the material the first time you see it, that's tough - get ready to answer 10 multi-part questions in 50 minutes. Bad.
In high school, I had a 4.4 GPA and took several AP classes. Up until this point in college, I've maintained A's and B's and a 3.6 GPA. I am now failing this course after receiving poor grades on the first 2 tests. I have never failed a test this badly ever - let alone twice. This is not just a weed-out course, but a complete passion killer. Beware
She does a flipped classroom but the vast majority of time BOTH in class and out is spent on practice problems, there is negligible amount of actual instruction. The test are also absurd bc there is not nearly enough time to do the problems causing them to be graded not on how well you know the content, but how many you can luckily rush through.
Challenges in life are not always directly comparable. During 2nd major at NCSU/UNCA, encountered Howard for Statics. I am now a senior in my Engineering Program, TA'ing for freshmen who will have Howard next year. And I laugh and laugh and laugh in schadenfreude at their misfortune. Bad instructor, bad class, bad outcomes. Irrational goals. Avoid.
I cannot even begin to describe how much trouble this class has caused me. It is a total hit to your GPA. Barely any in-class instruction, terrible feedback, way too much homework, minimal time to take tests. She stresses everyone out and my love for engineering has partially gone out the window. If there is another instructor, TAKE THEM OVER HER.
DO NOT TAKE HER. Worst professor at the whole university. Doesn't teach at all, you do prepare work ON YOUR OWN, go to class and do the problems ON YOUR OWN, take unfair tests that with little to no time. Homeworks are graded awfully. Take it at a community college.
This class is simply the worst thing I have ever done. I do more work for this class than all of my other classes combined just to fail the seemingly impossible exams and homework, due to insufficient time and insufficient teaching. Everything you do is on your own, including in class. She is not nice but doesn't care. This class is truly awful.
MAE 206 with Dr. Howard is the hardest course I have taken in my entire life. Not only is she bad at explaining material, she barely explains it and is rude and inconsiderate. I am passing all of my other classes with flying colors and am on the verge of failing this class. I spend 20+ hours a week on this class. Whatever it takes, avoid Dr. Howard
I am a 4.0 college student who has never failed a course, nor even made a 'B' in one. I also used to tutor calculus and physics. For the first time in my life, I feel in terrible danger of failing because of this horrid instructor. Likewise, there is a void where my passion for STEM once stood firm. This class has left me depressed and shattered.
Please do not take any class with this professor. She is rude in the way that she teaches and answers questions, she will make you feel like you are stupid, and she assigns more work than all of my other classes combined. Please do not take Professor Howard for any class. Truly the worst professor at NCSU.
One of the worst professors Ive ever had. Do not take her if you want to stay sane. Doesnt teach, and expects you to know everything before class and before the unit even happens. Grades are extremely unfair and will call you stupid to your face
Rarely answers students questions in a manner that allows the student to comprehend the material. She often degrades students when they ask any question that seems to her to be a simple one. Tough grader with vague explanation of expectations in most cases. Entirely too much work is given in my opinion and the class moves at an alarming pace.
Anna Howard has been seen both in class and during office hours yelling at students and calling them stupid over minor mistakes. Acknowledges that many students (if not the majority) will fail her tests, and may have to retake the course in the future. Reddit says the class is very doable, but I strongly disagree. I hated every second of this class
Worst and most hated professor I have ever seen. The class is tough, but she makes it impossible to succeed. She treats her students horribly, making it terrifying to ask a question if you're lost. Tests are difficult and you have very little time. Never gives explanations or even answers to most difficult questions. SETS STUDENTS TO FAIL.
Succeeding in engineering at NC State requires you pass Dr Howards class -- and she knows this and takes full advantage of it. The tests are so rigged and nothing like your homework which is 6 Moodle quizzes and 3 written assignments per week. Countless all-nighters for her class alone
Anna Howard might be the worst professor I have ever seen, to the point of me questioning if her job description entails failing as many students as possible. The class Moodle page is well laid out, that is the only possible compliment I could give her. She is rude, unapproachable, a harsh grader, and just overall demeaning.
I probably spent 20-30 hours per week on homework for this class alone. I also studied for the four tests for 30+ hours each. The class was designed to weed out weak students, but in engineering this is sometimes a necessary evil. I don't want an engineer who failed Dr. Howards class designing a bridge in my city. That being said, THAT SUCKED.
If you are close to failing please do NOT drop the class. I 30'd exam 2 and had a midterm average of 67 and still found the motivation to stay and work hard. Throughout the entire semester she made it seem like she was trying fail the whole class but surprised everyone after the final, which literally brought my average from a D to a C+.
Listen, her class sucks. With that being said, the material isn't as bad as some make it seem. I finished the class with a high A, just don't let yourself fall behind. Start the on-paper HW the second it becomes available, attempt (or at least look at) the computer HW prior to class, and use the review section on moodle thoroughly. Best of luck
Gives you an insane amount of work with practically no instruction. Claims she cares about you and wants you to succeed but will make you feel stupid if you dont understand the material right away. The time given for exams are way too short. Best thing is finding a good TA and going to their office hours as often as possible
Anna Howard was worse than Webster as a teacher, but you'll be happy you took her for future MAE courses. Her class will take up all your time and she is not friendly in office hours, but her LA's tend to be helpful. You go through hundreds of difficult problems, but in future courses you'll have to do the hardest stuff from statics in minutes.
She is hard, and its flipped class, so you pretty much have to teach yourself. Good luck.
Make sure to prepare yourself. If you're in MAE, this class leaps in difficulty and time consumption from the pre-reqs. I did learn a lot, and almost everything will be applicable to later classes. That being said, be ready to take yourself down a couple notches. She is not approachable and will point out all your wrongs with everyone near.
This was by far the most mind-numbing course I have ever taken. As rude as the professor is, take the time to go to office hours if there is something you are confused on. Even if she calls you stupid, you might be able to leave with something helpful (Not always). I almost dropped the course after failing the 2nd exam. I am incredibly glad I didnt
Many of the ratings are low because of Howard's personality, which is unfair in my opinion. Yes, she's tough and at times sarcastic, which may be off-putting, but she does care about your success. She may not have the best interpersonal skills but she's a good teacher. Highly recommend taking this class during the spring, class size is much smaller
She's like a drill sergeant. Brutal, but she makes damn well sure that you learn the material fully.
MAE 206 with Howard - This course is about teaching yourself and has tons of homework. Class time is participation and practice problems only. Most questions expected to be solved in about 5 minutes. Even on the tests.
Howard is likely the worst professor at NCSU. Statics itself is not a terribly difficult subject, but Howard makes this class unbearable. She provides little to no feedback on missed questions so you do not know how to fix your mistakes. Instructions are typically ambiguous at best and grading is always horrendously broken. 0/10, actually -10/10.
Dr. Howard has a very off putting personality which may be why she gets such low score. One thing you should know is that Statics is a flipped class meaning you teach the material to yourself and do the work in class then do more work after class. This is a very difficult class in my opinion, but if you do the work and participate you should be ok.
Horrible professor. Anna Howard is just a genuinely unpleasant person to be around and is worse as a professor. She assigns a massive workload that only makes up for about 20% of your final grade. Most of her test questions are not fair for the time she gives on the tests. She has no mercy in curving or grading. Unfortunately she's the only option.
She's brutal. Her class itself has made me question my major one too many times. So much work and you basically have to teach yourself everything since it's flipped class. If you spend a hefty amount of time per week on this class alone, maybe an A is attainable. It's definitely a necessary evil for MAE students, so brace yourself.
Horrible. You can't even take notes in her class. Worst teacher I've had and will ever have.
Alright- Dr. Howard is not ~that bad~. I do not recommend taking this class with a large course load, however. The work is a lot. Find a group that can do homework and understand topics together. Be sure to study hard for tests, and be sure you can work fast. You will come out of this class an expert in statics, and it really is a necessary evil.
Overall she's a great professor and teaches the material well. As a person, she's good at explaining concepts and does have a pretty good sense of humor (at times). Will say her teaching method using the flipped classroom does suck ass a bit, but other than that she's fine. Take all the negative reviews with a grain of salt, she isn't that bad!
An utter disgrace to the word "professor." Anna Howard is narcissistic and demeaning towards her students and doesn't want them to learn, but rather slave for a letter grade. Her quizzes are poorly structured (complex and submitted on GOOGLE FORMS) and she assigns them even on the same days as exams. Ask your advisor about taking CE 214 instead.
Horrible - and I mean REALLY bad - professor. Avoid this class at all costs. I honestly don't even know how she is allowed to teach anymore. She doesn't give nearly enough time on tests and is a harsh grader.
This class was dizzying. Each 50-min block felt like a Houdini act of who could actually get all of the practice problems done in the allotted time. No matter how much you think you might be prepared for the workload, you're not. One thing about Howard, she will make you think like an engineer, albeit in the most cutthroat of ways. Godspeed.
This is a flipped class. Dr. Howard does not teach at all and does not explain the material well. She gives us so much homework its equivalent, if not more, to all of my other class's homework combined. She does not let us see any feedback or answers for our quizzes so we are unable to use them to study for the tests.
Horrendous professor. She maybe "teaches" for 5 mins during each class and gives you a bunch of problems to do instead. I honestly don't know what she does for this class, since she certainly doesn't lecture, has 3-4 TAs, and her prep content is videos she recorded almost a decade ago. Also, she doesn't allow you review your quizzes.
The tests are stressful and the quizzes are torturous. Dr. Howard's lecture videos are good but it's a flipped classroom, so she doesn't do any in person instruction. The TAs are a great resource. Overall I found this class to be a worthwhile experience but I have major issues with how the quizzes and tests are administered.
Mechanical and Aerospace Students - You can take Civil engineering statics and the credit will transfer over. While Civil Engineering statics is still difficult, the class content and material is everything you need for your future classes. Just talk to your advisor about it.
Dr. Howard does not give any feedback on any assignments. If you don't know how to do a problem then oh well. She is basically there to open the top hats and that is about it. I understand that her intention is for us to think like engineers and to be ready for this field but her execution is poor and rather prepares us for nothing.
Dr. Howard was probably the hardest teacher I have ever taken. She will not hesitate to call you an Idiot to your face, even when you are struggling to do good. Her class is terrible and she doesn't teach.
Dr. Howard is not that bad, though many will struggle adapting to her flipped class and the heavy workload (videos, quizzes, online hw, projects, tophat, tests). Its tough love, because in reality, her class kind of mimics how real-world engineering will be. It will assess you on getting efficient solutions to non-cookie-cutter problems.
Her class is more work than all others combined. Doesn't show you the solutions to quizzes/ hw, so you get a grade and have no way to learn from it. Instructions are vague and she assigns projects without mentioning them in class. I've never seen her do an example. She is mean and relentless. Class format is not conducive to learning. Enjoy
This is the hardest class that I've ever taken. That being said, Howard does her best to teach a large amount of material in a way that engages students and forces them to learn. If you don't completely understand everything that is taught by the end, you will most likely fail. You can't take notes in class because all work is done on whiteboards.
Very good at ensuring you know the material and the flipped class structure is nice, but everything about how she administers the assignments is horrible. Tests and quizzes are poorly written and a small mistake will cause an F on an assignment. The format of weekly quizzes is a disaster and she refuses to use moodle like every other teacher.
Simply put, the worst professor at NCSU. She doesn't let you know what you got wrong or what solutions are for tests or quizzes, making it very hard to learn from your mistakes. She says this is because she would have to rewrite the tests/quizzes if she did this. That may be understandable if she actually lectured and didn't have 4 TAs, but it's BS
A stain on the NCSU engineering dept. In order to get enough students to pass in order to keep her job, she had to give C- to people who got as low as a 62 for a final class grade. This is supposed to be a C-wall class. The fact that she manages to screw over this many students is astounding. It's not the material. It's her supposed "teaching."
Anyone who says her class isn't that bad has Stockholm syndrome. The class is mostly self-taught which is honestly for the best. I don't hold it against her that the class is difficult but I think she goes out of her way to make it worse. My advice is to use the computer-graded homework to study and talk to TAs who can unironically teach better.
This is a thoroughly challenging class. With the amount of homework you'll have, you'd think the class is 6 credits. You have to put in the work of teaching yourself since it is a flipped class. If you set hours aside to do the homework and understand it, you can get by on tests. She doesn't teach and can be mean at times. Sit down and lock in.
Dr. Howard is a superb professor. As the first real engineering class you take, be ready to work harder than you ever have. Most people fail to accept the fact that you will not be spoon fed the material. But she recognizes that in 3 years, you will make decisions that can cost people their lives. If you can't handle the class, find a new path.
Honest on the first day about expectations - she is not a warm individual, but she is not rude and has the best intentions in mind. She understands the importance of Engineering, putting it gravely into perspective that people's lives may depend on your work one day. She takes it necessarily seriously, and her class reflects that appropriately.
Definitely the hardest teacher I have ever had. To put it in perspective, had to miss two classes due an excused absence and she gave me a zero for participation for both days, while all my other teachers extended my homework due dates and were very understanding. Also, the school approved the absence, but she did not. You will learn a lot though.
MAE 206 with Anna Howard is a living nightmare. All the people saying "if you can't handle her, don't be an engineer" can eat it. I get the material is difficult. She is just time-consuming and unreasonable. To be fair, you WILL learn statics, or you will not pass.
MAE 206 is very difficult. It takes time and effort, but also requires you to think creatively. Learning to solve the problems or memorizing the content isn't enough. To succeed, you need to take the time to understand the material fully. If you want to learn statics, take Howard's class. If you want an easier semester, don't take Howard's class.
It's a flipped class so you have to TEACH YOURSELF everything. People keep saying that you learn a lot in her class but it's meaningless;you will learn in ANY class if you make the effort. The instructor's job is to teach not to expect the student to self-teach for the entire semester. She is so useless,I literally can't believe why she's teaching.
I just graduated with a 4.0 in mechanical engineering. Dr. Howards class didn't have difficult material but the course was constructed in a cut-throat way that made it hard. The stressful, fast passed, low partial credit exams were rough. I made a 77 on one of them, which is the lowest test score I have gotten in college. SO MUCH HOMEWORK!
She is the worst professor u can have, dosn't know how to teach. The only reason I A her class was bcz I had her old exams. AVOID her since she will make u hate your life.U will realize how horrible she is after u take the higher level courses.Don't let her awful teaching method to discourage u from your goals. She is the WORST of the WORST.
Expected the worst but received a professor who was reasonable and willing to help if you used your words to ask. Dr. Howard is direct and stern, but not mean. She wants to make sure you know the content down to the core and can tackle new challenges without panicking. There's never a dull moment in this class and you will learn a lot. Communicate.
Very tough class, but manageable if you are willing to put your head down and grind. I strongly recommend finding a couple people int he class who are motivated and form a study group. Trying to teach yourself everything is a lot harder than collaborating through topics. Prof is fine, just make sure you actually try or else she will turn on you.
Dr. Howard is one of the worst professors I have ever taken. She runs a flipped-classroom setup so you are basically doing all the learning yourself while also doing the millions of assignments she assigns. Nevertheless, she requires you to attend class or she will fail you. There is finally a new statics professor at NCSU so take her instead.
Dr. Howard does not deserve all the criticism she gets. Her class is challenging and time consuming, but it's not arbitrarily difficult or impossible. She is blunt, but not mean or rude. The class will take up most of your time, but when you finish you will know statics backwards and forwards, which is the main goal. Welcome to engineering!
Interestingly, following any negative review, there is always an inexplicable positive review of her work likely written by her TAs who claim that all engineering courses are similar to MAE206. Wrong! The instructor's job is to teach material, rather than simply share outdated videos and expect students to learn everything on their own.
The antithesis of a teacher, I don' know why she has this job. This woman is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. She simply does not teach, does not assign homework, and doesn't provide solutions to problems...making it unnecessarily difficult to learn. When I asked her for help on a problem, she quite literally told me to teach myself.
Was missignf or the first month. Does not teach in class, since it is flipped. The problems she works, have so many mistakes. Overall, someone needs to give her the boot out of NC State. She thinks she is an awesome professor, no! Literally take anyone else. Class itself contentwise probably is not as hard, but you cant get any feedback, so sucks.
Yells at students, embarresses students in front of class, causes mental health crisises among students, she skips class without warning and still makes you show up. Do not take a class with her, you will be depressed for a full semester. 0/10 avoid with your life
Being A Teacher Is Easy, It's Like Riding A Bike, Except The Bike Is on Fire, You're On Fire, Everything is On Fire. There are few experiences like being in a class with Prof Howard. She screams at students, ignores pleas for help from students, and disrespects everyone she is in the room with. I have no idea how she is employed here. RUN far away
The flipped class helps me better learn the material, as Dr. Howard and the LAs give real-time feedback. Engineering is for smart, hardworking students; if you cannot handle this class, LEAVE ENGINEERING. One faulty bridge can kill hundreds; Dr. Howard emphasizes this. If you care even a little, then you should have no problems earning an A or B.
The person who left a comment before me seems to have developed Stockholm syndrome as they are fiercely devoted to this class. They are even urging others to leave engineering simply because they dislike the instructor's flipped classroom approach. It's disheartening to witness such hostility towards their peers.
Doesn't teach, doesn't provide solutions to tests or quizzes, she uses old, 5 min videos for lectures, and it's a flipped class with no homework. This class should not be as difficult as she makes it. The content isn't hard, it's her teaching 'style.'
You will come out of the class an expert in statics. However, I think she makes the class unreasonably hard. I would go into exams feeling like I understand the material very well and then do quite poorly which is very demoralizing. She has her reputation for a reason. Luckily, we have projects and quizzes so it's not super exam heavy.
I will say that I have learned a lot in Statics because of her. That being said, she is kind of terrifying in a way, doesnt really give good feedback and her weekly quizzes take hours for me to complete just to rely on the other quizzes for a good grade when I dont do well on the weekly. Learning Assistants are amazing tho
There's a reason she's rated this low. Don't bother asking a question, she will make you feel stupid for it. Her "teaching" is 10 year old YT videos you have to watch before class. So far 3 of the weekly quizzes have included material that had not been taught prior. The class isn't crazy difficult, but harshly graded and harder than it needs to be.
Dr. Howard is by far the worst professor I have had at NCSU. I understand the material is some of the hardest to grasp early on in Engineering but she teaches the class like a tyrant and is often very rude to students. It gets to a level where most students in her class are afraid to talk to her because of what she might belittle them with.
Very passive aggressive and expects you to be a genius in the subject after watching one 5 minute lecture video she made 10 years ago.
Listen, this class is a nightmare. The material really isn't actually that difficult, but she clearly takes joy in being a gateway class for engineering. Stick with it. She wont curve tests but the final exam and your final grade are curved way more than she lets on. Do the work with friends. DO NOT attempt to pass by yourself. Watch the videos.
Its a hard class. It sucks. But if you put in the time and actually try to learn the material and do the atrociously long weekly quizzes it'll be okay. I have to retake it and am choosing to take it with Howard because she wants students to succeed even if it is stupidly difficult.
Class material is genuinely interesting content that can be applied to many things in every day life for how the world works, but her weekly quizzes were the death of me. Many hours every Saturday and Sunday were spent on these quizzes just to get a 40. Since everything is in moodle, there is very little partial credit, no feedback sucks for class.
The flipped class actually does help as you do so many examples in class that you don't need to study much for tests. She can be mean and unapproachable but this is simply a weed out class. This class is really important for every other class you'll take so try to stick it out. The material isn't hard just the amount of work she gives is insane.
The class is not to tough in my opinion I think she just makes it more challenging. Overall I do think she is a bit intimidating but rarely do you actually have to speak to her because it is mainly group work. I nearly failed every weekly quiz and still got a B+ so don't worry to much about that.
Yes, the class is tough and not for the faint of heart and will require a lot of work outside of class. You could consider the amount of work excessive and ridiculous. The weekly quizzes alone are monsters and will be insurmountable if you leave them for the last day. Use your group mates and create study groups and you will be smooth sailing.
Calling her a professor is like calling a scam artist a financial advisor
Dr. Howard is a very hard professor. She tries to make the class impossible and is very hard approach. She doesn't allow you to take notes during class, citing the flipped classroom approach. If you work extremely hard, harder than you ever had, you might pass. If not, switch your major or retake. Try to take someone else if possible.
One of the more brutal MAE professors. She's rude, unapproachable, and doesn't clarify discrepancies in her videos and notes. She blew off the fact that the video she's been using for 8 YEARS had incorrect information when I pointed it out and never told the class. Insists on finishing all in-class problems even if it means skipping questions.
Anna Howard has been my favorite teacher I've had so far at NC state. She pushes you to think critically and make decisions on your own. The content can be difficult at times, but if you study and work with TA's you'll be fine. If your not a lazy student you will succeed. If you give her a chance you may find she is very good teacher.
The person before me appears to have developed Stockholm syndrome, as they not only like Howard, they also accuse other students of being lazy. It's interesting to see that after any 2-3 bad reviews, there's always a good one to follow up. This person is most likely one of the TA's, if not Howard herself.
She is rude to the point where I wait until the TAs are near to raise my hand; her homework is often unclear and there is a lot of it. That being said, by the end of the class, you learn Statics deeply and intuitively. The class has taught me a lot about the subject and how to approach and think about problems
Dr. Howard is so nice and encouraging, she is a great professor to take if you learn kinesthetically: doing something yourself to learn how to do it. You have to read the textbook and take notes before class; the class is usually practicing FBDs. I fell behind on homework and got a D. HW is meant to be harder than the tests so the tests are easy.
Dr. Howard is so nice and encouraging, she is great if you learn kinesthetically: doing something yourself to learn how to do it. Read the textbook and take notes before each class. Class is spent practicing FBDs with help from TAs and Professor. I got a D because I fell behind on HW; HW is meant to be harder than the tests so they're easy.
Dr. Howards statics class is quite tough and will require a lot of time outside of class to grasp the material. There are weekly quizzes that can take up your whole day if you don't fully understand the material and the class is flipped. However, Dr. Howard ensures that you learn statics to the fullest and come out an expert if you put in the time.
This was by far my most depressing semester here at NC State. The workload was so bad, that you had to treat it like a 6 credit hr. class. All her TA's had Stockholm Syndrome, as they were all fiercely devoted to her class. How she's still employed here is beyond me. Welcome to MAE bootcamp, 15 weeks of straight torture. Godspeed.
Absolutely AWFUL. Does not teach the material but gives you videos to watch and class is just working with group mates on problems that no one knows how to do. If you are late by even 1 or 2 minutes you get points taken off. She doesn't help or explain why you're wrong just gives you a bad grade and goes about her business.
Her class is flipped, meaning you have to learn all the materials by yourself. Even if you want to go to her office hours, she is condescending and VERY RUDE. If you take her class, your life will be STATICS. One good thing about her is that, if you really try in her class, you will KNOW statics. Overall, she is the most unapproachable professor.
She doesn't teach you anything. The lecture videos provided are 5-6 minutes long, and they only give you an 'idea' of what you need to teach yourself. The weekly quizzes are formatted poorly in Moodle using text boxes. It is a passable class if you pair it with easy elective courses and spend 7 days a week learning statics.
Yes, you learn the material very well but it takes A LOT of time to do so. Tests were very fast paced but easier questions than the quizzes. Make sure you request regrades in gradescope if you think anything wasn't graded right and as scary as it is go to her office hours if needed.
By far my least favorite class. Anna Howard does not actually teach and is completely unapproachable if you have a question. She takes off unlimited points on every assignment. Even if you're able to do decent on the test, every other assignment and project will bring your grade down because they are graded so harshly. Weekly Quizzes are brutal.
I've never met satan but Anna Howard was close enough. I didn't think it was possible for someone to be so passionate about making their students hate engineering. Hard weekly quizzes, hard tests, and very tough-graded projects. She will suck all of your dreams out of you like a blackhole. Torture is an understatement. Good luck.
The most hateful person I've ever met in my life. She has zero interest in helping you learn and feels gratitude from making you feel dumb for not knowing material she didn't teach. I turned in work for a quiz, received a zero for not presenting work, she said "oh yeah must have overlooked it but then said she wasn't changing the grade. DON'T TAKE
Honestly the worst professor I have ever had. This is a weed-out class and she intentionally tries to make it very difficult. Also a flipped class but her lecture videos are short and from 10 years ago so you have to learn everything on your own. She is also just generally pretty mean to her students and does not want you to succeed.
I love getting scolded in class because I was too slow in completing problems. If I'm struggling to learn the material, help me—don't just tell me to move on. There's a reason why, after the first exam, there are rows of empty seats in the back, and it's because people are giving up after feeling left behind.
I didn't know it was possible to get a 60 on a team contract till I took this class. I swear her TA's try to grade on a bell curve with a median of 50.
Nothing brings the professor more joy than ambushing us with quizzes—before class, at the start, during, and, for good measure, a massive weekly one(30+ MCQ). And projects? Those are graded with a secret, unwritten rubric ensuring a 100% is mythological. It's not education; it's an endurance test to see how much academic torment we can tolerate.
Her in class slides are often wrong. The FBD's don't live up to her BREAD standard. I've brought this up numerous times with her and TA's, but I get the same response: "do as I say, not as I do". Really?!? If you are incapable of following your own standards, maybe you shouldn't be teaching.
Here's how her office hours work: the first 5 minutes are spent making fun of you because she already addressed that question in her YouTube video from 10 years ago, and then you get your question answered.
Basically, a Russian professor criticized her work too harshly, and now she feels we must all suffer. Belittling students is not professional nor acceptable. I know many students who have taken her class will rejoice at the news of her retirement because, based on the numerous negative experiences shared on this page, her boss won't fire her.
The reviews on this class really do it justice. The material itself REALLY isn't that hard, but her ways of trying to explain it, berating to help students with more simple questions don't make it seem so. Jeff Hanson on youtube was the only reason I passed this class. Weekly quizzes will ruin your week, although the first 5 are (mostly) the worst
Finding reliable reference material is tricky. She offers solutions, but they often use methods—like unit conversions in half her YouTube videos—that lose points on tests. She's not open to feedback, so don't bring it up.
Things she won't tell you: Even though the wooclap code is provided prior to class, and you are capable to submitting the in class questions out of class, I wouldn't recommend it. She has kicked several students out for doing so. Furthermore, she gathers the IP addresses, email, etc of people who view the chegg answers that she uploads herself.
Can Dr. Howard be mean sometimes? Sure. Is her class setup annoying? Absolutely. Would I take statics with her again? In a heartbeat. Dr. Howard is great at teaching statics and cares about her students. She's helped me a great deal this semester, from late exam submissions to extra help understanding material. I am not a TA and you can do this!
I didn't believe it until I took her class. Anna Howard Syndrome is real and takes a few students every semester. It's like Stockholm Syndrome, but for the classroom. Students, stressed from doing all the teaching we pay thousands for her to do, develop a sense of attachment to cope with her derogatory remarks three times a week.
She's my queen I love her so much, the people who dislike her don't have appreciation for women in engineering/STEM
Honestly, professor Howard is a tough professor but it's only because she cares. The work is not bad at all and only takes about 2-3 hours a week to do all assignments. Exams were very straightforward. It seems that everyone who complains about her is just too lazy to do the work or study. She is not bad at all.
You have to be pretty good at statics and have a good base knowledge of physics to do well in this class. She is not a nice person but you can indeed learn what you need by doing the weekly quizzes.
She is rude and unapologetic about it. I am going to get a decent grade in this class, but it was only because my previous statics credit didn't transfer so I just needed to review. Also, a lot of these high rated reviews seem suspicious. Going back several years, majority the 5 star reviews like to call the students who dislike her as "lazy".
I'm so frustrated with this professor—she seems to want us to fail. Why can't I access my past assignments while still enrolled? I'm studying for the final, but half the material is unavailable. She admitted in an email that she's too lazy to create new content each semester, so this is her way of preventing students from having the answers.
Be ready to be yelled at before class. She'll get in your face and demand you check other groups' correct whiteboards if you make a slight error. It's not that she lacks interpersonal skills, but she enjoys your failure. Always has a smug smirk when you seek help in office hours, and won't give any meaningful help on the assignment.
She STARTS CLASS EARLY and will make mean comments if you are late, plus she won't give you credit for the quiz. You have to put in hours upon hours of work each day to do what is expected for the class, and it's clear she doesn't understand what she's teaching.
Anna Howard almost led to the suicide of one of her students. She provides no support and your work is graded based on impossible things and she always takes points off even on the team contract. She explains the problems well, sorta. As for "lazy" students; her class actively gives you depression. Then she penalizes you for not having the energy.
Everything you need to know: "I had two kids but one died at age 23 last fall. (If I'm upset that's probably why.)" I'm sure your son wouldn't like that you use his death as an excuse to be a terrible person to everyone around you. Wont say sorry if she bumps your chair, steps on your backpack, or even coughs on you. Hatred won't cure your loss.
No matter how much time you dedicate to this class it will never be good enough for her. Sets insane expectations for students and constantly speaks down on others. I couldn't step into her classroom without having a panic attack most days. Genuinely does not care about student success one bit.
Definitely my hardest class so far. Weekly quizzes are the hardest part of the course, they will take up your time. I averaged about 4 hours per quiz. Project guidelines were unclear. Professor degrades students during class, and is kind of funny. Tests are kind of fast-paced. I would recommend getting study partners or going to office hours.
A few years after this class, you'll find many students have a favorable opinion of Dr. Howard. The class truly did nail in the fundamentals, which you cannot get anywhere else (like baby civil statics or taking it elsewhere). Yes, she's not perfect, but in a few years you will be glad you had her. I've used statics in every class after this.
If her class was a job, you would win a lawsuit for workplace harassment. The desire to say 'please get away from my board, your feedback is rude and unnecessary' is overwhelming. But you can't do that because she's the professor and she'll wreck your grade in the class. This immunity breeds her narcissistic behavior of humiliating you for mistakes
If I wasn't terrified of Howard's reputation I don't think I would have done as well in the class. Just put the work in. She is condescending, but the class isn't hard at all. The weekly quizzes were hard, but the tests are incredibly easy. I think people on here are finally being introduced to the rigor of engineering and are blaming it on her.
I never wore a seatbelt when I drove to her class because I wanted to die before I reached her class.
In her class she acts like you're a 5th grader trying to understand calculus. To her you're nothing but a number and an idiot. When she walks up to your board during class she looks for anything and everything wrong so she can verbally wring your neck. I would take her class if you want to build some character, otherwise stay very far away
You'll find this class enjoyable—if you enjoy walking on eggshells around someone who mistakes control for competence. I went to office hours three times, and honestly, that was three times too many. I'm not emotional—I just want to be treated like a human. But apparently, not learning everything from her 10 year old videos means I'm not deserving
Little torn because reviews are accurate about her attitude, but if you get a thick skin and in the right mindset, this class setup is really advantageous to learning. Weekly quizzes are timely to get 100%, but those and class time teach you the material well. The quizzes have a buggy answer keys, so don't feel crazy if you know you got it right.
My mental decline that occurred during the duration of the semester was insurmountable. If you want a good chance of doing well in the class you must be a superhuman robot capable of learning before the material is covered, or else she will make your group feel the rage of a thousand suns.
I know, you're looking at Statics aren't you? And seeing that she's the only one teaching it? Good luck. She cussed out a classmate on the FDOC because she overheard him saying “I already know I'm gonna hate this class.” She said “GTFO and don't come back. I don't want to see you again.” She's mean-spirited and not a good teacher at all.
For someone that teaches students for a living, she has a genuine hatred for them. Someone should really send snippets of her lecture readings to the dean for misconduct review. Every class is a non-stop verbal assault for making minor mistakes. If you're whiteboard drawer, she'll try to make you feel guilty for bringing down your teammates.
The interactions I've had with Dr. Howard have been fine. I've found her open to questions as long as you're open to doing some thinking yourself. She is what she says she is: blunt and sarcastic, but never intentionally mean. Statics is a LOT of HARD work. I personally don't like flipped class structures, but Dr. Howard knows her stuff.
"Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is?"
The most evil, condescending, snide professor you will ever have, but despite all of that, she does have a heart.
Professor Howard has been an ineffective instructor. She relies on outdated videos nearly a decade old, communicates harshly with students and TAs, and recently sent a class-wide email calling out students publicly, creating an uncomfortable and unprofessional environment.
Short lecture videos and quizzes due before each class, and weekly quizzes due Mondays. The weekly quizzes will take hours and are difficult to get a 100 on, but you are usually allowed 2 attempts. Exams are typically easier than the quizzes and there are 4 projects throughout the semester. Make friends with group members and ask TA's for help!
I expect to get an A or B in this class. However, I basically self-taught. This is a flipped class, where you learn the material for homework and come to class and do practice problems. This isn't a problem. The problem is Dr. Howard. By far the rudest teacher I have ever had.
Dr. Howard believes that her class is the most efficient way to teach statics, and it should be in theory, but she fails to realize that she has to be a good teacher for it to work. Her attitude and way of explaining things in a large classroom setting simply doesn't work. Although she is quite mean, I did hear good things about her office hours.
This class is just as bad as everyone says it is. The projects and weekly quizzes will take up a lot more time than you think they will, and the grading on them is so strict that it feels like they're just making up stuff to take off points for. The only reason I got a good grade in this class is because I sacrificed my weekends to study.
Although I respect Dr. Howard's approach to statics, I feel that she is the type of professor you'd only want to take once in your college life, even if you end up learning a ton from that class. Group projects can take up your whole week, and weekly quizzes can take up a whole day, and very hard to score a decent grade on it.
What your perception of Dr. Howard is depends on what you think makes a good professor. While she doesn't attempt to make things easier, Dr. Howard will make sure you know statics before the end of the semester. Yes, she is blunt, but I never found that to bother me. Whatever you do, DON'T TRY TO PASS THIS CLASS BY YOURSELF.
This is a tough class. You will have to spend many hours outside of class both learning the concepts and completing the weekly quizzes. Many dont like professor Howards teaching style. It will seem like she is always out to get you and it will seem like she is trying to fail you. Its kind of a bummer but if you can put in the hours, you will pass.
She is not nearly as bad as everyone says she is. She genuinely cares about her students actually understanding the content, not just getting an easy A. Everything you learn in this class is critical to understanding future engineering classes such as Dynamics and Solids. Her class is a lot of work, but it is worth taking. You will learn a lot.
This class is a lot of work so be prepared to spend 6-8 hours a week on it. Halfway through the semester I stopped doing the review quizzes to focus on the weekly quizzes. She is blunt but a reasonable person. If you're stuggling in the class you should talk to her. Make sure you do the prep quizzes before class and don't forget about the projects!
Anna Howard's class is tough, but I feel like I learned the content well. My biggest issue with Dr. Howard is that she wanted you to solve the problems exactly how she would, and she would get mad at us whenever we did something slightly differently from her.
The quizzes can take your whole Sunday and the tests are super fast paced but none of the material is conceptually more difficult than anything from PY 205. I only got an A because I locked in. As for Dr. Howard, I was surprised how kind she was when I talked to her directly. She wants to help but is very abrupt, don't take it personally.
Avoid at all cost, I highly recommend finding another teacher to teach you MAE 206 for she was not fun to learn under. As proof of what I say is true, on one of the midterms the class average was a 52% so take this review as a warning for her class.
Statics was honestly a miserable experience. Lectures provided little clarity and leaned too much on recordings, while the workload was overwhelming. Expectations were vague, feedback didn't help, and the class felt unnecessarily punishing rather than educational.
