Anna is a cool teacher. She wants her students to do well, she is laid back and she makes her class pretty fun. She gives you the writing and oral assignments before hand! She speaks like 5 languages so at times she can be hard to understand, and she is a little impacient. But overall she is a good teacher and I would defintely take her again.
Absent-minded, spacey and rushes through lectures at a fever pitch. She gets very frustrated with students who aren't terribly good at speaking or writing the language. Difficult to understand and does not always clearly understand students' questions. Overall a OK teacher, but she does get impatient with students. Overall she's just OK.
very nice
The pace of this class is very fast, but she is a great teacher. The tests aren't that bad, and she is happy to help you if you ask for it.
Excellent.
Eh...take another professor if you can. I am retaking this class...and I dont think she is the fairest professor. She is nice, but demands a little too much for this class. It's a tad ridiculous!
Nice, sometimes a bit unclear about assignments; willing to help.
A bit hard to understand when speaking in English, but she's very generous in giving help when it comes to Spanish pronunciation. Grades fairly and doesn't play favorites. Relatively (VERY relatively) patient when it comes to turning in assignments. Learned a ton.
She's just a great teacher for learning Spanish. If you truly want to master the language Anna is wonderful.
she is awesome and very very helpful. there is a ton of work, but overall she's a great teacher
she's a sweetheart and very helpful. i have taken years of spanish previous but never understood it. the first day in her class, i learned 500x more than any of my previous years combined. shes amazing! im taking her again next semester for 211!
I like Ana! She helps you understand the reasons WHY you need accents marks and so forth. She has a cute spanish accent too (w/ a lisp). There is a lot of homework but it's only to help you understand better. She made me want to keep learning spanish because she makes it fun. I like her and reccommend her! Wish she taught 112.
I love this teacher. I have taken her for three semesters of Spanish and she is the most helpful person ever. She loves her subject and is willing to help everyone. She even is helping me plan my trip to Spain. TAKE HER, you'll learn a lot.
Anna is a great teacher. I had no knowledge of Spanish at all and she helped me become a pretty decent spanish speaker! She encourages students, always offers help. She encouraged me to study abroad and keep my interest in Spanish high. I recommend her for any class, but be prepared to work hard, it is worth it!!
Professora Kalminskaia is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is extremely helpful and understanding. She makes the class easy to understand. Before taking her class I wasn't too interested in Spanish, but now it is one of my passions.
She was great. She really cared about her students and getting them to understand the material. She often would speak in English to teach us grammar. I would like to take another class with her
Ella es dificil. She assigns a lot of tedious hw assignments and has fairly high expectations. You will learn a lot, but the fast pace may lose your interest. Avoid her if you are limited in your Spanish abilities and passion. Also, she can be rather short with people and gets irritated with students regularly. Avoid her. Mother Russia!!
ANNA IS AMAZING! If you have the opportunity to take a class with her, do it! She is very helpful when it comes to teaching difficult grammar topics. She takes extra time out of her day to help in addition to office hours. She is part of the reason why I decided to double major in Spanish. Stop her and for help if you don't understand something
Really great teacher, definitely learned alot. She was also very very helpful, and made me want to spend a year abroad!
Anna was great! She was part of the reason I majored in Spanish, and was really helpful when I didn't understand something. Take her if you can!
She was awesome! She was the reason that I majored in Spanish and that I am going abroad. English and Spanish aren't her first languages so she knows all the tedious grammar that most of us don't even know in english. Very clear with grammar and very willing to help with everything. Great teacher. A lot of written and online homework tho. :(
This woman is a great teacher!! I really enjoyed class and i think i learned ALOT! super funny teacher and really cares alot about her students. try to take her if you can!!
Take this teacher! She's very clear, very nice, and very helpful. You'll learn a lot.
IF you really want to learn the language, shes the one. Her class is hard though. You have online homework, a packet, and you have to correct every quiz and your packet when you get them back. She doesn't give you the answers on the online homework. If youre ready to work hard, take her class. She is really nice though..
The worst spanish teacher I ever had. Don't take her class!!!
You will learn spanish. Do the work. It's worth the effort when your fluency and grammar improve dramatically. It's college, it it was easy, everybody would do it.
She is unclear and makes the class much more difficult than it should be. She doesn't teach the material before giving it out for homework, and then just goes over exercises the next day. All class is everyday is going over exercises. No teaching. Her tests are always the most difficult questions there are, and she never gets how to help students.
She is the most difficult teacher ever. She doesn't teach the material, but assigns a lot of homework and expects you to know everything when you come in class. She doesn't understand how to help students, in fact when I asked her for help she told me that she wasn't a tutor. Worst spanish teacher ever, do not take her.
She knows what she's doing, and she's very helpful when you need it. BUT her class is extremely difficult. I'm not even going to try and be subtle. It was the hardest Spanish course I've taken. I almost dropped my major., but she told me to stick with it, so I did. She's never mean, and she's always there for her students.
She is very helpful with her students, but you definitely have to be engaged in class. Participating in class is necessary in order to understand the material. There is a lot of work, but it is all to keep practicing Spanish. She isn't too tough of a grader, but no extra credit is offered.
She has a weird Russian accent but teaches Spanish, and it makes no sense. The class is super hard and she expects everyone to just understand the material. She is helpful if you go out of your way and are willing to spend all your free time dedicated to learning her material. There are exams, compositions, and an oral exam, with a final as well.
The class isn't easy and the material is the annoying grammar that most people don't know in English. But she is helpful and knowledgeable and after the class you'll feel like you learned a lot.
This professor is amazing. It seems to me that the people who dislike this course were not prepared to think in spanish. Coupled with the amount of homework and reading required (which is really not that much - welcome to college y'all), it could be overwhelming. especially if you barely paid attention in the previous classes.
Kalminskaia was a fantastic teacher. She explained things well and was very helpful in explaining things. This class requires hard work, but it's worth it.
This class was one of the hardest I've ever taken. She expects you to know how to do everything, and teaches nothing during the class. Going to class is pointless because you just go over the homework that nobody knew how to do, however attendance is mandatory. I would not recommend this class to anybody.
Avoid this professor if possible. Maybe she had a bad semester this time - but her syllabus made zero sense, she was rude to her students, especially ones that transfered in late like I did. Homework was never graded in a timley manor and her explination of course content left a lot to be desired. Terrible, terrible professor
This class is such crap. It's a ton of busy-work. She assigns homework without teaching the concepts its on, so you're just lost. She grades pretty hard, and is really picky. And during class, she tends to make a big deal out of mistakes and it just ends up embarrassing you rather than helping you. I don't recommend taking her.
Kalminskaia is a super tough teacher, but honestly you will learn a lot, and I found that if you needed help, asking her would help ALOT for me. She was really accessible, and I would suggest taking her class, especially if you're interested in actually learning Spanish, even though it may be a lot of work.
She is a tough teacher, but is really accessible. Take her class if you want to learn Spanish properly!!!
Anna is a great teacher- she is always willing to help during office hours, goes out of her way to make sure you understand. She expects you to do work on your own, which some lazy students hate, but made it so much better when you learned the material. I took her for all four semesters of Spanish! She is the reason I know spanish!! She rocks!
She is kind of an intimidating teacher, but as a person she is incredibly sweet and helpful. She's really smart and knows everything that there is to know about Spanish. If you want to learn the language, take her. It's more work than the average Spanish class is, but it's worth it. It really isn't as hard as everyone says, just harder than usual.
She grades really hard and is very rude when you get an answer wrong. Also, she calls on people constantly.
This is by far the hardest Spanish class I've taken. She moves really quickly through her lectures and gets upset when no one can answer her questions. The class average for tests was generally around a 65. If this was the only class I was taking this semester I could get an A, but I ended up with a B. Take a different professor if you can.
I find her to be incredibly unapproachable and intimidating. Her lectures move so quickly and are in pure Spanish and the slides are so long that you won't get them down so you just kind of sit there. Her tests aren't easy, but at least there's a curve. She's honestly one of the toughest teachers I've ever had. Don't take the class unless you must.
Hardest class ever taken. If you don't understand something she will not help you, she will tell you to go to tutoring. She expects you to already know spanish and she doesn't really teach it. Your basically on your own for this class. If you don't have to take it DONT. Her tests can be hard but she does give extra credit
She has high expectations and she does indeed expect her students to know the material. She's nice if you actually talk to her, but she will not like you if you are lazy and do not participate. Honestly, she's hard on you now so you won't be hard on yourself when you can't speak basic Spanish. You also must bring the txtbk to every class.
I really liked Kalminskaia. One of the reasons is because majority of the time we just spoke Spanish with each other. She moves quickly and expects her students to know the material beforehand, which sucked for people whose first time taking Spanish ever was in her class. Just look at the stuff you're going over before going to class.
One of the harder professors I've had in college, I do not recommend. Large amounts of homework every night, you will be constantly checking webcampus for new assignments she forgot to tell the class or include in the syllabus. Her tests require many hours of studying, thankfully she generally makes the test content clear before hand.
Her nickname is the Hammer in the Spanish dept. Nuff said!
I LOVE HER! She really wants you to do well and has really flexible office hours. There's no excuse to do poorly in her class because she gives plenty of opportunity for corrections and she will clarify any questions. I hope I can take her again.
Although majority of the time she does speak in Spanish, learning a language is not supposed to be easy. You have to talk and hear Spanish in order to truly learn it and be exposed. Yes, the class is challenging, but if you are willing to put in an effort, she is always willing to help and gives good feedback. I think she is an excellent professor.
very hard grader acts like this is the only college class you are taking expect to have a hard time and prepare for a huge time commitment
The textbook was a lifesaver! She expects you to learn the information on your own and then class is more of a review. For a first year class she expects a lot from you. But if you do the homework and ask questions you'll be okay. She is willing to help you on anything you need if you ask nicely. Class is hard so you must pay attention.
She's a helpful professor, but there's a lot of homework and in class work.
most unclear syllabus ive ever read full of endless busy work, and she does nothing to help you. never take a course from her
She moves too fast and is very intimidating. If you attend class she will be willing to help you. She is very unorganized and loses students work occasionally. Only take her class if you are fluent in Spanish. She knows what she is talking about and is fluent in several languages but has a hard time explaining it.
She doesn't respect that we are paying for her to work here. Our taxes are paying her, yet, she treats people like crap, and expects way to much from us beginning spanish students. Her speaking spanish the whole time is fine, it is easy to understand, little kids could understand her, but her respect for her students is horrendous.
Could be very mean even though she doesn't mean it. She gives out harsh criticism which makes you lose self-esteem. All those essay writing learned from previous English classes can go to waste because she has her own way of writing a "high quality" paper. You'll get tired of her writing "no está claro" on your essays. Lots of homework as well.
Don't do it. Extremely hard if you're non-native.
She has a reputation for assigning a lot of work--and that's probably true--but I learned a lot from the class. You do have to follow along with the syllabus and keep up, but her vocab quizzes aren't very hard if you're a decent student. I took a conversation course with her, and my spoken Spanish improved greatly as a result.
This class is unnecessarily difficult. There is so much homework and her grading policies are insanely ambiguous. I once followed all requirements that were given, and without even consulting the rubric, she gave me an 89 because it "wasn't an A paper". Attendance is mandatory, you're grade will suffer if you don't show up.
Anna is a great professor! It is true that you have a lot of work but you are in college. If you need any help she meets with you during her office hours and is very helpful. She can seem intimidating at first but if you talk to her and get to know her she really isn't. I learned a lot from her and hope to be able to take another one of her courses
Although I have learned a lot in this class, I can't stand the busy work. I also don't like being corrected while I am speaking. I get too nervous to speak a lot because I feel dumb every time she interrupts me to correct me. She definitely cares about her students learning, and she gives a lot of feedback for improvement.
She is the worst professor I have ever taken. She is extremely specific with her grading and will mark you down for anything. Her comments for feedback never make sense and she expects way too much.
Good professor, but will often finish people's sentences while they are trying to think and then move on--not very good for a conversation course. There was a lot of work for a pass/fail class. Around 16 papers for the semester, 200-250+ words each, plus 3 presentations.
I'm a native Spanish speaker and let me tell you guys I. am. struggling. I cannot discredit her as a professor, she is full of so much knowledge and as a person is sweet. However, her lectures are beyond overwhelming, there is so much you have to know. One of my majors was Spanish but after this class, I am no longer pursuing that. Says a lot.
Her in class lecture is very dry, hard not to fall asleep. Gets upset when the class chooses not to watch the extra videos on the slides. Quizzes almost every week.
This professor is so kind and she loves to crack jokes and relate to her students. Overall a solid choice for a professor. The in-class work is pretty minimal and as long as you participate, she will love you! If you don't know something, she is very understanding and tries to help you out.
She is the most difficult and cold lady you will have. Constantly just tells you how bad you are and that only studying abroad will help you. She will make you feel stupid when you do not know something and not help you at all. Do anything to not take this lady she is one of the worst professors at UNR.
DIsrespectful to students. BEWARE tough grader. Does not teach in her class, expects you to read everything at home, complete all the assignments in the book and online and be ready to literally give her the answers. This is not teaching this is proctoring.
She is very knowledgeable on the subject, although she is not patient when teaching her students. I dreaded going to lecture each day because I was afraid to be embarrassed by her. She praises the student if they get an answer correct, but if wrong, she has a sarcastic remark and does not help students problem-solve. Overall, take someone else.
Take someone else for this course. There is a major lack of encouragement and explanation. She assigns a lot of homework and grades free-response questions, papers, and "charlas" harshly. It was difficult to hold a B in this course.
prof. kalminskaia is definitely a demanding professor but she clearly puts in so much effort into teaching and went above and beyond even tho the class was virtual. she tried to make us feel comfortable and pushed for class participation
Prof. Kalminskaia is a great prof! Even in the difficulty of an online setting, she really does try to give the best feedback possible. I'm looking forward to having her again in the future. Do your best in the class and you will succeed.
I am sure that she is great for those who are minor/major in Spanish. However, if you are in there just for credit, life is miserable. She will call you out in the middle of the class and embarrass you. She thinks that you only have time for her class, i.e., you have to come in outside of class hours to do a speaking project w/ a partner.
Assigns way too much homework. One week we had at least 60 questions (each question had multiple parts). Makes you come in outside of class times to complete an assignment (i.e. charlas). Does not respect that you take other classes. Unless you are a spanish major/minor who has time, do not take her class. Disrespectful of your time...
She is a wonderful professor who does everything she can to make sure her students understand the content. Yes there is a lot of HW, this is because it is a LANGUAGE course and that is the nature of the subject. She is not a tough grader on tests; learn the material though. She does respect time and is understanding with communication.
It seems like she only cares for her students who actually are studying Spanish. For those who are just trying to fulfill a foreign language requirement, I suggest taking a different instructor. I really did not appreciate having to come in outside of class (with only a week notice) to complete an assignment that was not offered in class time.
She's just not a good teacher. She tries to be a good teacher but she just doesnt have that teaching quality. Her classes are confusing half of the time, her study guides are nothing like the test, and her explanation of Spanish makes it harder to understand the subject. You won't fail if you just do the work.
Professor Kalminskaia gives a lot of homework that you have to do before she gives the lecture on the topic. But the homework is mainly graded on participation, 3 tests that are average difficulty but if you do the study guide it is helpful (it also counts as extra credit). The grade is based on writing so if you can write well you will do fine.
Slow to grade and to respond back either via email or canvas messages. She is a tough grader everything has to be perfect. Do not take her, she does not care about the students. If you email her consistently for help she gets mad so BEWARE.
Be prepared to have a lot of your time dedicated to her class if you take it. While a good professor teaching wise, she is very work heavy. 120 questions, 20+ pages of homework, a writing assignment, a composition, a group project, and a chapter quiz to be done in 2 weeks alone. You can get good grades so long as you practice—if you find time to.
Here's the thing. I have dealt with difficult profs before, but she is the first one that personally insulted me. Mix that with her being a hard grader and a poor teacher (imo) I just couldn't stay in her class. I highly recommend you find a different SPAN prof. You may have a different experience, but just know my experience was not unique.
