Dr. Cahill was very helpful, this class was really enjoyable and she made learning philosophy fun! Be prepared to speak a lot in class and to know your stuff. But overall, the class was a pleasure.
Great Professor. Made me switch my minor to philosophy
so easy. if you have to fill an elective, this is a good one. lots of clash discussion, no homework. she takes attendance though, which really sucks. but you can get away with missing a decent amount of class.
She is a kind person that is more than fair in grading papers. Take her if you can!
She is so nice, don't buy the book, just come to class at leat 80% of the time and you will have an A
Easy class. I would advise at least buying the book for citations, but her class is a fun place to discuss philosophy without having to worry about sounding dumb. We only had 3 papers and no tests or quizes. Just show up most of the time and you'll do fine!
Her class was lots of fun and easy. Just come to class write the notes off the board and talk the rest of the time. Her papers are easy if u write good notes and she is just so sweet! Take her class and you'll enjoy your time there and get a good grade!
Dr. Cahill is the best teacher I've had at ODU. She is extremely nice and an easy A if you try with the papers. There are no tests in the class, just papers. Take her I highly recommend her!
This is my second class with Prof. Cahill. Although I generally schedule morning classes I took hers from 4:20-7pm, just because she's that good a teacher. She is so nice and very understanding. She is also very helpful. Also, like her 110 classes, no tests, just 4 papers and one is extra credit.
She is one of my favorite professors at ODU. The class is interesting and allows you to look at situations from different points of view. If you participate and make sure you write decent papers, expect an A. She really appreciates participation, so keep that in mind.
Great teacher. If you come to class everyday, take notes and participate in discussions you're half way there. Lot of papers to write mainly pertaining to reading and notes.
This class is great. Her papers are mainly on what you read, but if you take GOOD notes then you won't need to really read the book. Great class, easy and helpful.
Dr. Cahill is a great instructor. If you just attend all the classes you will have no problem passing with an A. She goes over all the material, answers any questions you might have, has no test, quiz, pop quiz, midterm or normal final. All her grades are based on participation and the papers you write which are 1 page per topic double spaced!
4 assignments all semester - 3 papers...she gives you 2-3 questions for each paper and you have to answer each of them in one page (really easy if you go to class and take notes)...and then you're final paper is super easy - you have to chose four philosophers and write a one page paper on each...no exams/tests, takes attendence, dont buy book
Outstanding class. If you are any good at writing papers, expect an A. She encourages daily participation so expect to attend and participate. I enjoyed her class a lot.
Professor Cahill is an excellent teacher, as well as a nice woman. Her course is writing intensive, but if you have already completed a couple of English classes it should be a breeze. She gives plenty of extra credit, so there should be NO excuse for getting anything but an "A" in her class.
Dr. Cahill is excellent. She teaches from notes, so she doesn't go off on tangents. There are no tests or exams. You have to write 1 page papers on the philosophers discussed in class. If you bring up a point in your paper, explain why, be very specific, and don't use BS as filler...she hates that. If you take good notes, you won't need the book.
I loved Mrs. Cahill. Old-school in her fact-giving lectures and her non-dependence on the text or anything that doesn't come out of her mouth. Doesn't ask much of you other than the bare bones. It can be kind of a boring subject but her in-class prompts are usually related to modern or interesting topics so it's easy to keep a good grade going.
I had Ms. Cahill for Business Ethics. Be prepared to write FAST. She uses the first half of class to lecture (she writes a list of key words on the board and she moves very quickly), then uses the second half to read and discuss case studies. Very interesting class, learned a lot. 3-4 big papers (no more than 8 pages), no tests.
Dr. Cahill is so cool. She gives her number out in case you need help. DON'T WASTE MONEY on a book. She can quote the stuff page for page. Take good notes and really study for that first MATCHING TEST... IT'S the DEVIL! Just read over your notes every night and you'll do ok. She offers extra credit even unto the end... The best ODU prolly has...
Worst teacher ever. She is just dumb. I mean, i know camels better than her.
Dr. Cahill is awesome. Even though this class pretty easy, you will learn a lot if you actually come to class and participate in discussions. Additionally, she's one of the most friendliest professors I've had. I'd love to take another class with her. Highly recommended!!
Loved the group discussions. Lots of assistance when it comes to clarity and asking questions. Great articles to pick your brain that contribute to the lesson at hand. 3 Papers Very Challing professor but you will not be bored in her class. Be prepared to take notes and right fast though. Be on time for class too :D
Great Teacher Phil303 will prepare you for 345. Great Summer course to take if you're looking for new experiences. Group Activities are added perks to learning curve and ideas.
She was AWESOME! I love Dr.Cahill, she was really nice, a little stern, but overall really helpfull. Took class in summer and she made it really enjoyable! I highly reccomend her to anyone that wants to actually learn. Textbook used in class as well as for assignments.
Awesome class. attendance is manditory so just show up pay attention and you will do good. 3 or 4 tests multipal choice all u have to do is study facts and u will get a good grade on them. Great teacher
Very specific on how she wants her work done. Very professional in appearance/attitude. A stickler for campus rules/guidelines and keeps a taught rein on the language used during class. Limited writing (3 papers, max of 5-pages each), but big on class participation. Well worth the time and a fun class if you like to voice your opinion.
Very nice and a great teacher. Make sure you go to every class! She is a stickler for attendance! 3 papers no final! Be sure to participate.
Very good Professor. Approachable and offers help when asked outside of class. Class Participation critical.
There were three papers to write. Be sure to put thought into each, because there aren't many other assignments. I go along well with her, but she embarassed several classmates unnecessarily. Also, show up for class.
Professor Cahill is very nice. The class was not easy, especially since it was my first phil class. But if you have problems, go and talk to her. She is very easy to talk to and will do her best to help you out. Highly recommended!
Dr. Cahill is an amazing professor AND person! I absolutely loved her, as did the rest of my class. We had fun participating in class and she welcomes different viewpoints. Don't be intimidated by the papers, she will help you. Just be sure to FOLLOW directions which should go without saying, but those that did poorly didn't follow directions!
Great teacher and really gets you involved in the subject by making it relevant to whats going on in your world. Very writing intensive and she allows for extra credit. Also she will meet with you outside of class if you have any problems. Loved her class, just be prepared to study.
Dr. Cahill is awesome she really teaches you what you need to know and makes you interact with the class in a non-stressful way. I feel like i've learned a lot. 3 papers and attendance make up your grade but if you take good notes and don't write like a high school student you'll be fine. Highly recommend this class :D
take her! she is nice, but can be stern when it comes to certain things. all papers, no tests, 2 short ones, and 1 longer one.. once u know what she wants on the papers, they are easy to get As on. and a buncha extra credit
If you are in the military do not take her class. She is not military friendly. I would stay clear of her class!
she is really specific on how she wants things. Easy though as long as you follow directions. you have 3 main papers to do and participation counts as 25% of the grade and the essays 75%.Be there for class because you can't just depend on the textbook. the notes help a lot, especially since she explains them. I never once read the textbook!! lol
Wonderful professor, really is passionate about philosophy and enjoys teaching. Ms. Cahill is very particular on participation and attendance, but it isn't bad -at all-, seriously. Textbook is barely used, 3 tests (2 T/F, 1 matching) and participation (attendance) = your grade. Go to class, write down what she writes on the board and you're set
i took her bc all the reviews say its just papers, NOT TRUE! we have in class writing assignments and 3 tests that are hard but she tries to make it as easy as possible. i was terrified to take philosophy but she is an amazing teacher. she loves hearing what people think, especially if you think differently. def take her class its so worth it
Don't agree at all with the previous comments of this prof. being 'wonderful'. However the class is simple and easy. Beware though this prof is condenscending and VERY rude especially if you question the grade she gave you. She actually flung a paper back at me once. If u want an A be the class clown & don't sit nxt to ppl that talk about her.
great teacher. Work is minimal, and she show a buch of interesting videos. She is fun and keeps the class lively. You can get an A is you can write at a college level. Great if you are in the administrative leadership cluster.... fun class--take it!
She is an older professor who loves students who speak up and contribute to class discussions. She doesn't assign homework other than reading the chapters. No papers. Tests are 25 true and false questions on 3-4 chapters each.
She's quite funny, and very smart. She expects participation and attendance, and if you can handle that (in addition to studying for the simple tests), you can get an A or B. This was Ethics, not some mess like Intro to Logic.... If you need a phil class, TAKE HER. She's great, and makes it fun and engaging.
If you go to class (which is generally entertaining)and know how to write a decent paper you should be able to get an A! She's awesome!
Very kind, easy teacher. Don't need to read the book but it helps a little. She is VERY thorough in her teaching and you make good notes. GO TO CLASS AND TAKE NOTES. Hated Phil b4 her but she made it easy. Took the once a week/3 hour session class, good option for those who don't like the subject. Tests: T/F only, study or it's a bit hard.
Great professor. She's really nice and is very clear in her lectures. Go to class, take notes and study for the tests. The tests are not that hard and are T/F. She takes attendance but class is interesting so it's not bad.
Dr. Cahill is a shining example of what a good professor should be. She is consistent, fair and goes out of her way to help you succeed and get interested in Philosophy. Just be sure to show up for all classes and participate. Four T/F tests and participation for grade. She made me interested in a subject I was dreading having to take.
really good teacher !! i did horrible on the first exam but once i started paying attention i did great..ended up with an A- at the end of the semester..she loves discussions and she really gets you interested in the subject with controversial cases.
Very nice professor. Her class is very interesting and she encourages discussion. As long as you show up for class on time and write decent papers, you should end up with an easy 'A'. One of the best professors at ODU!
She is the cutest little old lady ever created. She is super sweet and always has a smile on her face. Her tests are true false but attendance is required and affects your grade!
Defenitely the best instructor I have had the pleasure of having during my time at Old Dominion. Keeps everyone in the class dicussions. Grad is based on three tests and participation, so you have to go. But it's a fun class! I feel like is almost doubled my intelligence. Take her take her take her!
Best teacher I have had in a long time. She is so sweet and the class is very interesting. 3 T/F tests and class participation. Her class is fun and I love the in class discussion. Great teacher, you won't be dissapointed.
Great teacher you receive an A for attendance, class participation and online discussions. I attend St Leo University. No TEST NO QUIZ Just three papers easy A. Highly recommended
Nice professor, very approachable. This class is based on 3 tests and extra credit for attendance. The class does have you speak and tell your opinions everyday, she makes you feel comfortable tho. I wish she taught more classes, I would take her again. You will not go wrong taking this class!
Great instructor, knows her stuff. Class participation is key in this class, and I enjoyed sharing my opinion along with hearing others. 3 true/false tests, I did average on the first two, third test was much easier. if you go to all classes, you get 10 extra points on your lowest test grade. I'm going to pull out a C+/B-, its very close.recommend!
Dr. Cahill is a good professor. Interesting cases to discuss and respond to. Take good notes off the slides. Tests have some trick questions, so study well. The extra credit is lengthy, so it's best to do well on tests and not need it. I had fun in her class.
Great Teacher. 3 T/F tests with 3 bonus questions. Tests are very straight forward. Taking notes in class was sufficient with out studying for an A.
Attendance is key because the tests are based of the slides in class. Also having good attendance helps boost your grade in the end. 3 T/F Tests and in class writing assignments. The test is mainly common sense. This was my favorite class!
So if you want a straightforward class that is impossible to fail if you give the effort, take this one. If you are a higher-level thinker, then you may find this class to be a bit mind-numbing. The material is pretty drab but that is not Cahill's fault. She is passionate but is levelheaded with her instruction. I recommend to some, but not all.
Dr. Cahill's lectures were very informative. Take good notes and STUDY for the tests, 2 T/F tests and an optional 10pg paper. If you go to every class and participate, you can get up to 5 bonus points! Go to class and study. Not too hard for a 300 level class. Dr. Cahill is a sweetie.
This was a really great class but only had two main grades which were x2 fifty question tests on several chapters. Ensure you study the slides and focus on who did what more so than the idea which is what I got a little attracted to. She is one of the best teachers albeit, not getting the grade I desired I learned a lot from the course.
If you need to do the paper to improve the first TF test you might as well forget about it. It was a total waste of time and she completely tears the paper apart and gives a terrible grade for it! I have always made A's in all of my English classes and I know how to write a paper. Terrible experience will never recommend her to anyone!
Loved Ms. Cahill's class. Tests are very important since there are only two and there is only one optional project. No homework or any other points given but if you don't miss any classes you get 5 extra credit points towards your last test. She does a review right before the test which is very helpful. Take her if you can!
Dr. Cahill's class was one of my favorites. Lots of discussion but I found the topics were interesting. 3 TF tests, no cumulative final. If you show up to all classes you can receive 5 points extra credit added to your final grade. Literally study PowerPoints slides and you will get a A on the test. Textbook was not really needed. Loved her!
This is my second time taking Dr. Cahill, I took her for Phil230 as well. The course is very easy and nonchalant. She sends you the powerpoints so you can just print them off and just write additional notes in class if needed. 2 TF Tests, all you need to do is go over the slides. An optional 10 page paper and 5 points EC for perfect attendance.
Just three test and participation. Test are basically from powerpoint and text book. Easy class. Cahill is a pretty nice teacher, you can tell she loves what she does. Just dont let her catch you texting, then you'll be good.
She's awesome. Very by the book. No phones out or electronics. She is interesting and helpful. Does a review before every test and all test are 50 TF. The second test is way harder than all the rest so be prepared. Only 3 test including the final and 5 pts participation but it's easy for the most part
Her tests are true false but all the questions are really subjective so it was pretty hard to do well. She did offer extra credit and to drop the lowest test grade (there were 3 tests, no midterm or final)
You'll need the textbook on the occasion but that's primarily for in class use. She is really nice and the class is actually really interesting. Except to be called on and talk about some of things you go over in class. You'll also talk to the people you sit next to and everything is one big discussion. It's not that bad though.
I took her this past spring for Business Ethics and passed with a B+. Beware she's old fashioned, so any type of electronics is a no no in her class. Always take notes because her test are T/F questions and are based on the lecture. She doesn't give homework but does give you an opportunity for extra credit & attendance is also a major requirement!
The way she gives lecture is by reading definitions out loud, and she is not very good at explaining things. All her exercises to do in class are completely irrelevant and useless for the tests. They are true or false questions which do not even test your understanding of the course or knowledge for that matter. Terrible prof, would not recommend.
Her class is super easy. She gives 3 test throughout the semester that are true or false and there is no midterm or final. She also gives extra credit. She does not allow ellectronics in her class. If you go to all classes she gives you 5 points on your lowest test grade. Powerpoints are online if you miss a class.
I enjoyed her as an professor and also my class. She only have 3 assignments which were test, no final exam. Her test were true and false which are easy if you study. she do give an extra credit option. I would take her over any professor.
This class was very interesting and we were able to talk about good scenarios that were related to ethics. She gives plenty of extra credit opportunities. She does not really email back in a timely manner so if you have questions ask them in person. We only really use the book to read scenarios in class and to study for the tests. GET THE BOOK!
Sit in the front or you will be given a harder time
if you attend all the classes, download and study the lecture slides that she provides, and put a minimum amount of effort into the test prep, you'll breeze through the class. There's an optional term paper that most people failed to submit. That's a mistake. She's a lenient grader, and she'll use it to replace a test grade.
Nice lady if you pay attention. Respectful of all viewpoints. Only grades are 3 tests so you need to study hard for all 3 or its unlikely to pass/get an A. Tests are True or False. She adds a few random in-class assignments without warning making attendance mandatory. Notes are valuable because they match up with the tests. Study & you'll be fine.
Professor Cahill is an absolutely phenomenal person. She was very engaging with the class and always made discussions on different topics very interesting and thought provoking. Her notes are posted on blackboard, but I highly recommend attending the lectures as she sometimes gives important information on the tests and gives extra credit. STUDY!!!
It is a lecture heavy course, if you cant sit for the allotted time do not take this course. She graded you on participation, 3 test, and attendance. If you attend every class you get extra credit. She does offer tons of extra credit. A ten page paper is optional and that can replace a test grade. It was fairly easy if you study for the test.
I absolutely loved Dr. Cahill. Aside from being a great professor, she is just such a great person overall. We had to complete 3 tests and 1 paper. They were not hard at all. I received 100% on the paper and all A's on the tests. She gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Take notes, study and you will do just fine.
I really like professor Cahill as a person, but I don't love her teaching. Class is set up so you have 3 exams and a paper and that is it. That isn't bad because she does let you spend how long you need on the test and come back to it. However, the questions are worded very weirdly to confuse you on whats being asked. ditto on paper instructions.
Prof. Cahill is very thorough in her delivery of the material and her Syllabus spells out exactly what is required for the class. Participate in the discussions and complete the paper and you will do fine. There are three tests that were not timed and answers can be derived from her lecture videos and the book. She will answer emails promptly.
Overall grade consists of 3 exams and a paper, with the addition of 3 chances of extra credit. The class is very easy, and the exams are open until the due date (able to work on it and continue it later on). Module videos were straightforward, and the paper was very easy to do. Be careful though, it is graded by little things so every grade counts
Seems easy. However, you only have three exams and three DB (worth 3 points each) and a final paper. Not a lot of chances to improve your grade. I suggest you listen to her lectures, take notes and use the PowerPoint to get thru the exams.
Not a bad class. Chapters are long. 3 tests (open book), 1 paper is all you are graded on. Extra credit for discussion board. As long as you read and understand, then you will pass. The lectures were good.
Overall, this was a good class. There were three tests and one paper. The tests were kind of hard at times because you had to choice the "most correct answer." Although, watching the lecture videos, reading the textbook, and studying the powerpoint helped a lot. Also, there was extra credit offered too.
