She is a brand new prof. from UC-Berkley...started out very nice and sweet, and then morphed into a witch. First test EXTREMELY hard and 8pages long..now, more manageable length, but still hard tests. Expects you to know everything...if you don't go to class, you have no chance of passing..studying the book does not really help. Take Parish!!
Her notes seem to come almost straight from the book and she doesn't really explain them. She teaches from a power point, which in my opinion is a terrible way to teach chemistry. If for some reason you can't get into Parish's class just wait a semester. Do not take her!
This class is not as bad as the listings above. She said herself at the beginning of the semester, the class is HARD. O-chem is just hard. If you want to learn the material - you are going to have to put in some effort. Oh and she can spell - Berkeley.
very hard to pass
She basically takes the stock PowerPoint slides from the textbook's website, then halfway explains a few topics for 50 minutes. She is not a very good teacher and is terribly uncomfortable talking in front of people, but, if you can read and understand the textbook, you have a slight chance to do well. Good luck. You'll need it.
If you can learn from straight up power point, with few completely worked mechanisms, then this is the class for you. Yes, organic chem is hard, anyone can tell you that. However, this class is ridiculous. Take Parish, or at the very least, Worley or Levant. At least you may somewhat understand their classes.
While Organic Chemistry is a hard course, it is very difficult to learn the subject when it is presented on power point alone. Even as a successful student in freshman chemistry, I found it difficult to follow her style of teaching. Attending the review sessions is the most beneficial aspect of the class.
Purely awful. She is INCREDIBLY unhelpful. She is pretentious and pretty much called me stupid for not doing well in her class. I have never had test anxiety before this class. Her exams are off the wall and her teaching is atrocious. Avoid her like the bubonic plague. Otherwise, your dreams of med. school, vet school, etc. will be ableviated.
She is not as bad as everyone thinks. I read the chapters and did homework and did well in the class. Of the 3 tests she drops one. This is the second toughest course I've taken at Auburn, but because she was tough I feel like I know it better. If you are going to professional school you'll be prepared for MCATs orr DATs from her class.
The listings on here are only somewhat true. This fall semester was here first year to ever teach the material so of course she will be nervous. I made an A and it was all due to reading and studying the problems that she assigns. The tests are extremely long, but not that hard if you know your stuff from the book. She drops a test that helps aslo
i hope she is not teaching again, avoid her
I'm sorry... but I cannot learn purely from a textbook. There's no point coming to class because you won't learn a single thing from her stupid powerpoint notes. She's also extremely rude and has no respect for her students. I know that we are the students and she is the teacher... but at least have the deciency to respect people for being people.
awful teacher
WORST teacher I have ever had in my entire life! She does not know how to teach on the students level. Powerpoint notes are pointless and time spent in class is ridiculous b/c it won't help you understand a thing. You have to learn on your OWN if you want to pass the class. Just hope this woman never teaches this class(or any class)ever again.
She is a new teacher and does not know how to teach. I don;t think she will teach next year anyway.
Uses POWERPOINT to teach organic chemistry - people complained about it and she said we just needed to learn to take better notes. I had to teach myself from the book...
It is very possible to make a decent grade in this class is you study. She's not the greatest teacher, but her tests DO reflect what she went over in class, so if you go to class and learn the stuff on your own, an A or B is definately possible.
She was very nice and truely wanted to help her students learn. She went fast in class, but if you kept up with the reading the class was not too bad. The tests were very long and you needed the whole time even when you knew the stuff perfectly
This is without a doubt the worst professor i have had at Auburn. She teaches a tough subject with powerpoints, so class is useless as far as understanding the material. You must teach yourself from the book to have success in her class.
She sucks. If you do not have a natural understanding for chemistry then she is not the teacher for you. Powerpoints suck and are just confusing. She is not very helpful and the tests are long.It seems as though if I were a teacher and more than half of my students dropped my class then I would try to help the ones who stuck around but not her.
She is a very nice person, but it was a very difficult class. The powerpoints could be found online, but incomplete so I found myself in class trying to fill in blanks rather than learning so I could use the notes with the book later. She did help a lot during her office hours especially when she stayed 3 hours past her hours day before the final.
She is hard, but this is organic chemistry. She is very helpful with her office hours, and wants you to do well. Read the book! I went to class but didn't always use the online notes... they were too much trouble. Stay on top of the reading and if you have a question, ask! Much better than some of the other prof. on campus!
If you want to learn about chemistry and are willing to study hard and come to class regularly, Dr. Gorden is an excellent teacher. Her tests are pretty hard, but she is helpful in office hours and reasonable with extra-credit opportunities. Reading the textbook and doing the optional homework problems is extremely important.
Very smart but she is a terrible teacher. You must learn the material from the book and study on your own. By far the worst prof I've ever encountered. I hope she gets better with time.
Dr. Gorden is brilliant, but she has a hard time teaching to people who aren't chemistry minded. I wish she would use more examples, but she teaches the concepts very well. Good teacher, if you are good with organic.
Worst Professor I have had at Auburn in. If you do not naturally understand Chemistry do not take her!
Her class is tough, but all organic classes are tough. She has printable notes that allow you to listen more in class instead of writing all the time. If I had a choice of taking her class over Squilicote's, I would definately take her's.
NO GOOD!!! She's a poor teacher and doesn't explain her powerpoints very well. I feel I gained absolutely nothing from the lectures. I learned everything by comparing the powerpoints with the book, however they were little help because the exams are so tricky. and her laugh is annoying.
She was the one of the worst chemistry teacher I have ever had. she gives you the powerpoints to print out but they are not helpful. the only thing you do in class is filling up the blanks on the powerpoints. I had to learn everything by myself. That is how I got a good grade. Please do not take her!!
Grading is very forgiving. Drops lowest exam grade (there are 3) and adds a point to your final for every homework section you do (there are about 15 of those). Also includes an extra credit question on each test. VERY helpful during office hours, but it is required you go to her. Also very friendly; desires to improve her teaching skills.
First test was pretty hard/unexpected but everyone did bad so there was a decent curve. Curves grades when averages are low. Final grade consists of 2 of 3 tests (drops lowest) and Final (which she adds 1% to for every HW you do). DO THE HW!
RIDICULOUS!!! Puts notes online but it doesn't help (they have mistakes in them anyway, she tells you!) Tests are EXTERMELY hard. She does review sessions but she just can't explain things too well. She didn't even seem to wonder why our last test average was a 65...can't be that ALL 200 of us don't study! GOOD LUCK WITH HER!
This is a very hard class to begin with so you need to attend class to understand stuff. Her tests are often full of smaller details from the book you wouldnt expect to be test questions. So study the details in the book along with her powerpoint notes. She can be helpful but has a hard time explaining some things, go to the review sessions.
This class is very time consuming- attendance and completeing the homework is a must if you want a good grade. Your grade consists of 3 tests and a final & you can drop one of them. Bonus opportunities are available. She doesn't clearly explain concepts so read the book. Tests are difficult if you prepare well, but overall are fair.
She's very unclear with everything in the class. She intentionally puts mistakes in the notes. Organic is hard enough without even more confusion. Take someone else if you can!
O Chem is a hard class and she make is bearable. Not the easiest in the world but good. READ THE BOOK. It is extremely helpful if done before class since she does here lecture straight from it. Tests are pretty tough but plenty of extra credit to help. GO TO CLASS if not you probably won't do well.
I absolutely loved Dr. Gorden. Yes, the class is hard, but come on... it's Organic chemistry!!! She helps those who try to help themselves by coming to class and studying on their own. She remembers faces, and if you come to class and try your best, she'll help you as much as possible.
Dr. Gorden is very scatterbrained and she tries to teach organic chemistry from a powerpoint presentation, which is highly ineffective!! Her tests are not as hard as Livant's but you will end up regretting having her when you have to teach yourself everything. Make sure you do the OWL extra credit because it can make a huge difference in your grade
She teaches with skeleton notes from a powerpoint and does not work examples. Even if you attend class you end up teaching yourself everything through the book. Her tests are not extremely tough, but you have to know the material. If you have a strong organic I background you are better off. Extra credit OWL really helps your grade if your do it
She teaches via powerpoint. No good teacher does that for organic. Having Livant for 2070 was my only chance. I taught the whole course to myself. Do OWL! Go to test review sessions. There are no in class quizzes. If I took her again, I would attend class the first day, test days, and the final day. I could do a better lecture myself.DONT recommend
Organic Chem is not going to be an easy class regardless of who you take; go to class, do the homework problems, study, and you will be fine. She gives a ton of extra credit on tests and OWL online homework counts as extra credit on the final. It was a difficult A but it's possible!
extremely difficult.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She is extremely difficult and tests are impossible. You'd be better off just reading the text than going to class because she doesnt teach. Do all the OWL homework because that's you're only shot at redeeming the hard test grades. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
Organic chemistry is not going to be easy regardless of who you take. It's just a hard subject. Dr. Gorden is one of the most fair teachers that I have had a Auburn! She rewards the students who go to class, so go to class. DO the OWL homework. It really helps your final grade out! She really wants her students to do well!
She is a terrible teacher. She means well but is not effective in her teaching. There were times where students would call her out for contradicting herself. Nice, but she sucks honestly. Take someone else.
Where do I begin? Ridiculous class. Teaches with powerpoint so you can't keep up, obviously does not understand students don't know names of structures or how to draw them on day 1, does not quiz you along the way to help you study little by little, and plain rude. Had to get a tutor and still got a "D" in her class. Avoid this woman at all costs!
Tough class, mainly memorization. Get old test, DO THE OWL. Read the text before coming to class, Dr. Gorden is easier to understand if you've already read the material but need explanation or a second look. Read sections before coming to class. I never really looked at the notes outside of class. Made a B
It is true that Organic is hard no matter who you take, but Gorden makes it a lot harder than it really is. She tries to help you out with the OWL hw and is generally helpful but she still can't teach, and enjoys giving tricky questions. I went by her office to ask a few questions one time and all I got was a "You don't know how to do this?" look.
Had her for organic II not a bad person just not a good teacher (in my opinion)I would recommend taking someone else if possible.
I enjoyed her as a teacher. The key to doing well in her class is finding someone who has old tests. Old tests really help.
She has terrible speaking voice and a creepy laugh making it very difficult to listen. Notes are pretty useless, I studied from the book and the practice problems she assigns. Go to class for random extra credit and do online hw to help on final.
Somewhat awkward in class with having to speak loudly, but not difficult to understand. The material though... You really have to pay attention in class, take notes, do the homework, and study to do well. The tests are mostly as she describes them in class a few days before. The final follows directly from previous tests. Gorden is a good professor
She is a VERY FAIR teacher. You get what you work for. She drops a test grade and gives a LOT of bonus (go to class, do the homework). Her tests aren't tricky, you just have to understand the material and you'll do fine. She's also very helpful in office hours.
Its a hard class, definitely not gonna lie. And she is not very clear in class. However read the book before class and its fine! She is so sweet and loves to answer questions. Go to office hours AND class. The tests are hard but not impossible. STUDY STUDY
Read the book. Gorden is one sassy lady-- get ready to put up with her moods and attitudes. She presents the material clearly though.
I had Gorden for Organic 1.. read the book before class, her slides will make more sense. Do the book problems she assigns, and just study. Do the extra credit homework and attend lecture. She is veryyyy helpful if you ask questions or go to office hours. She appears intimidating but she's great. The tests are challenging, but its organic, duh.
Had her for OrgoI. Not a bad person just not a good teacher . I would recommend taking someone else.
Impossible to understand
Terrible teacher. I literally brought my book to class and just sat there and read it because listening to her is pointless. Don't take the class if you came to college to be taught by professors, because she will not teach anything. Everything you learn will be what you teach yourself.
Flies through her slides in class. GET THE BOOK! Her tests are fairly straightforward, but you are going to have to learn in mostly from the book itself. However, she is very helpful in office hours.
Attack Orgo from every angle: lecture, book, homework, tutoring. It's a really fast-paced, dense subject that takes a lot of effort. Dr. Gorden was a good and fair professor. Do the xtra credit homework!!!! Toward the end of the course she gave us a different grading option. I had D and did real well on the final and came out with a B.
She has been teaching graduate students the last few years and it shows. Her class is doable but you have to stay on top of it and study. she will help in office hours but get frustrated with our level of understanding. in my opinion I would take Livant over her but she isn't bad.
Dr. Gorden taught the class with power points which made the pace of Organic way too fast. Her tests were difficult and she is hard to listen to in class. Do the online homework for extra credit and get the solutions manual of the book so you can teach yourself. I regret not taking Livant.
Dr. Gorden is a good professor, but she does go through lectures quickly. It is important to be prepared for lecture by reading and going through her skeleton notes prior to attending class. Her tests are fair. GO to SI, do homework and come to class.
Dr. Gorden is a very fair and kind person. As a teacher, I feel like she does a good job. Organic Chemistry is hard, but it's bound to be better with Dr. Gorden than Squillacote. Work hard and you'll be okay.
Annie G knows what she's talking about and that is the root of the problem. She talks to you like you already have mastered chemistry and it's frustrating trying to get on her level. Her power points do not help, honestly read the book because it's much more effective than going to class. Better than squillacote though so thats worth something
Dr. Gorden uses power points to teach which I do not find helpful. She does, however, follow the book closely. Use the book and do the extra credit hw and you'll be fine. At least you don't walk out of her tests feeling like you've been through 'Nam as in Squillacote's class.
Organic chem is hard. With that being said, she is not that bad. Her tests are graded fairly and are not extremely hard. Old tests are helpful because sometimes the multiple choice questions are the same. You will be thankful to have her if you had Squillacote for Orgo 1.
She teaches with PowerPoint and gives incomplete notes so you're scrambling to write everything down before she QUICKLY moves to the next slide. You don't even have a chance to listen to what she's saying. That being said, tests are fair. Study the book CLOSELY and you should do fairly well. You pretty much have to teach yourself though.
For an entire semester, I was told by her and the TA to not memorize mechanisms of reactions and to just remember the reactants and products. Then at the end of the semester, the entire class was given a final that was a standardized test. This would not be a problem, except that this test had FREQUENT questions specifically about mechanisms. AWFUL
Dr. Gorden told me not to even bother coming to the final. She then proceeded to tell me that I should strongly consider changing my major that I wouldn't get into the professional program I was applying for if I struggled with her class (and yes, I was accepted). Retook this class with someone different and got an A. Thanks for the support Dr. G!
Terrible lecturer. If you haven't learned the material she will be lecturing on beforehand, don't bother going. She clarifies, she does not teach. You'll be utterly lost and just wasting your time. Even if I manage to pass this class, I won't have learned anything.
I had Dr. Gorden for CHEM 2070 in Spring '15. She seems scared and laughs nervously throughout the class. Her lectures are powerpoint based, and she does move fast. Overall an A or B is very obtainable in the class, however, it is necessary to READ your book and WORK the problems. I had an A all semester as a result of hard work the week of tests.
I had Dr. Gorden for CHEM 2070 in Spring '15. Her lectures are powerpoint based, and she MOVES VERY FAST! DO NOT TAKE HER! If you have a question she will indirectly call you "dumb." She is terrible in class only in office hours she can help you. Take Curtis if you can.
Not a bad professor, go to class or you will fall behind. Plus she gives random bonus points for attendance. The book is needed to supplement her skeleton notes. Tests are fair- no surprises. Seems intimidating at first but is friendly in office hours. Would take her again.
Terrible. Only uses power points and doesn't explain anything. Always messes up in class and confuses everybody and then tries to act like she meant to mess up. Also she grades super hard. Had 90% of a mechanism right and the only thing I did wrong was add an extra step and I only received 3 point out of 15
10/10 would NOT take again. Organic chemistry is hard enough, but when you have a horrible professor such as this woman, it's even harder. She flies through power-points that make NO sense and constantly berates any student who dares ask her a question. Relied on book problems to prepare for her tests, which are not actually THAT difficult.
Avoid this professor if at all possible. Whenever a student has a question, she acts like they already know the answer and makes them feel inferior for asking said question. She teaches via PowerPoint, so you have to write super fast, which causes you to not pay attention. Have to rely on the book ENTIRELY to pass. Please avoid this professor.
Avoid. She uses skeleton notes and speeds through them. She puts the notes up after class though. To fully understand the lecture, I would advise reading before it. Tests are tough.
This class is organic 2 so it's designed to be hard, Gorden isn't the best, but shes not the worst either. Tests are extremely long which means you really have to prepare well ahead of time bc you can't spend much time per question or you won't finish. Tests are the only thing that determines your grade so you must do well. Lowest gets dropped.
I don't think I have worked harder for a class in my life. I read the entire chapters of the book, take detailed book notes, go to class, take her notes, study 1-2 weeks in advance, and still have a mid-C in the class. Instead of giving straight forward tests, she gives "exceptions" or the least expected things from each section. Extra credit given
Uses skeleton notes on a powerpoint, so textbook is your best friend. Not approachable outside of the classroom. She makes you feel dumb if you do not understand it. Getting points back on a test, HA! Don't even bother asking. "Do they really matter?" If you get her, go to class bc of extra credit quizzes sometimes. AVOID. First C I've ever made.
Dr. Gorden I thought was a good middle group between the other two professors in Ochem. Her tests were really fair difficulty. She skims over her lectures and her lectures aren't very informational, so I spent a lot of time in the textbook teaching myself. She does give extra credit on exams and throughout the semester for showing up to class.
She flies through lectures and doesn't seem to understand that not everyone is as smart as she is. She doesn't scale her tests so if you do okay on two tests and poorly on one test your grade is toast. However she does have some MC. Chooses some of the hardest things to make as the basis of her tests. I wouldn't recommend her.
Dr. Gorden's class is hard, but organic chemistry is also a hard course. I didn't really like her style of lecturing bc she goes through examples very quickly, but she goes along with the book so I just read that. She posts lecture slides on Canvas and recommends practice problems which really help. Tests are mostly fair, but hard.
Gorden made organic as painless as possible. The lectures aren't that helpful because she speeds through the slides, but sometimes she gives extra credit quizzes and questions that will be on the tests. If you know the book inside and out and do the practice problems she gives you, the tests are straightforward. Overall a very doable class.
Reading the book was always better than lectures but she throws things into lecture that you'll need for the tests. Provides opportunity for bonus points every test, but tests are hard. 100% recommend office hours
IF YOU DO NOT READ, YOU WILL NOT PASS!! You should also come to class because she notices who is there and who is not even though it is a big lecture. She moves very fast and it is easy to become lost. Also sometimes she gave pop quizzes for extra credit and its important not to miss those. Also WileyPlus is mandatory, would get the answers manual
Dr. Gorden was pretty fair overall. Her lectures were put together and easy to follow. Her tests were kind of difficult but if you study you will do fine. Read the book and do all of the practice problems and try on the homework even though the solutions manual has all of the answers. Her test averages were always around a C. Not the worst.
Very condescending, she taught my class like you would teach a middle school class. If you don't play along with her childish games and activities, she won't like you, and she holds grudges. But you can find her tests and final beforehand if you know where to look
If I had skipped class all semester and just read the book during that time while also keeping up with her notes, I probably would have learned a lot more than going to her useless lectures. When test time comes, know the material back and forth, since tests are too long. Don't take her just because she's Honors; there are better teachers in Reg.
Dr. Gorden is the best choice out of the professors for CHEM 2070. Her tests are very fair and she normally gives partial credit, but sometimes her lectures were hard to follow and she seems a little eccentric. I learned most of the material from SI and not her, so I recommend her for her tests alone, not her lecture quality.
Dr. Gorden is not an awful teacher, but her lectures are so scattered and she's easily the most condescending teacher I've ever had. She doesn't seem to enjoy the material herself, so it makes it hard to enjoy her class. Her tests are long and don't actually test your understanding of the material, but they're fair.
Dr. Gorden was not too difficult. She is "fair" according to some. Although I am content with my grade in her class, she was just terrible. She made students cry, yelled at students in middle of lecture for being on their phones, etc. She just can be very rude and has a power problem. Would rather wait to take the class if she was my only option.
Dr. Gorden is just not it. For Ochem, you want someone who is going to make it at least somewhat enjoyable by being kind or at least smiling from time to time. She just seemed miserable. Does not prepare you for ochem 2, especially if you take Curtiss for Ochem 2. Good luck, go to class for the extra credit, just avoid interaction with her.
Dr. Gorden knows her stuff and it is obvious she is good at organic chemistry, but she seems to forget that we are just now learning ochem for the first time. Her tests are fair. Her lectures are all over the place and her notes do not make any sense. Better to just read the textbook and teach yourself.
Too smart to dumb the material down. Weird and really unorganized notes. Get used to teaching yourself. Only plus side is that she goes by the book. Tests mimic the homework (Wiley) and textbook problems. Take another teacher if there is another option.
Dr. Gorden rounds grades at the end of the semester, gives lots of extra credit opportunity, but is not the nicest person. She is reagent heavy not mechanism heavy, her tests are fair, and she makes Orgo as easy as possible for you. Go to class because she sometimes gives xtra credit when not a Lot of people show. Get a tutor, Ochem is just hard.
O Chem is such a hard class that the professors get blamed for it. She made it mostly painless with very reasonable exams, LOTS of extra credit opportunities, and help outside of class if you need it. YOU NEED TO READ THE BOOK TO DO WELL. Klein's textbook is amazing, read every chapter and her tests are a breeze. She wants you to do well!
Dr. Gorden is very rude. She is not kind at all and is very unapproachable. She is sarcastic, and honestly, didn't make my class experience great. Her lectures are very fast paced. Very. Do the homework, join a group me, and get a tutor. Ochem is hard, but she gives xtra credit. Tests are very very fair, almost so fair its unreal.
DON'T TAKE! It's a joke that Dr. Gorden can call herself an educator. I had to teach myself every concept in this class. She's impossible to contact outside of class and when you can get her to respond, she's very rude and acts like it's a burden to answer any questions you have. If she's your only option, get ready to teach yourself.
Dr. Gorden wasn't the nicest or the easiest to communicate with, but she made up for it with fair, straightforward exams. You have to read the textbook to do well!!! I also recommend using Klein's "Organic Chemistry as a Second Language" book. Doing both of those things helped a lot. Plus she gives extra credit!
This is my least favorite instructor. Yet lectures arent helpful. I taught myself the entire course. YouTube is your best friend and reading. 3 tests, 1 final, and homework. If she curves everyone gets a different amount of points. If you fail youll get more if you pass youll get less. Absolutely wouldnt suggest.
Lectures are all over the place so you'll need to read the textbook to stay organized and understand the material. OChem is hard no matter the professor, but Dr. G gives fair exams and extra credit opportunities that make a difference. She became unaccommodating and & rude when we went online because of COVID. Not impossible but not easy!
Everyone is so hard on Dr. G and honestly she doesnt deserve that. Is she the sweetest? No. She is not going to baby you. If you work hard, shell be more than willing to help you. Read the textbook, the green book, get a tutor, study with friends, go to SI & OH. Work HARD. This class is HARD. Study hard & you will be fine. Exams were truly FAIR!
Dr. Gorden wasn't my favorite, but her tests are fair & she offered generous extra credit opportunities for each one. Her lectures weren't very helpful for me. Read the textbook & work as many practice problems as you can. Klein's green book was also helpful! Don't get behind or it's really hard to catch up toward the end.
This was Dr. Gorden's first time at Texas Tech University. She is a good professor who gets a bad rep. Use the textbook, make review sheets, show up to class, and do the extra credit. There is no excuse for this course. She is not going to baby you or be very accessible outside of office hours. Use the orgo chem tutor on YouTube for stereochem. GL!
I was genuinely excited to take organic chemistry this semester. Little did I know that I would have to teach myself ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. Dr. Gordens recorded lectures were not helpful whatsoever and neither was going to class. Get ready to be best friends with your textbook. Please choose a different professor. Ignore all positive reviews.
You definitely need to study by yourself. I did go to all the classes and watched lectures and followed her instruction how to study, but I ended up getting the lowest grade in my life. After stopping going to her classes and studying with the textbook by myself, I got a better grade. If you want to get good knowledge of o chem, do not take this.
Homework is only 10%, the rest of the grades are exams. Going to class or watching the lecture videos is a waste of time as she isnt able to teach the material well. Your best bet is to read the textbook and take notes to hope to learn the material. Can be very rude, rarely responds to emails, exams usually have problems. Youve been warned.
I had Anne a few years ago, and let me tell you I never ran across another instructor who was as rude, condescending, and indifferent about the education of students. She's not a great lecturer and the tests aren't too bad. At one point a girl in my class ran out crying after she had yelled at her for asking a question. I would avoid.
