goes off topic, no breaks during lectures
lectures aren't great, funny lady in certain courses
Anne is very smart and loves new ideas. She is a very slow marker though.
Brilliantly funny and unpretentious!
her lecture had absolutely nothing to do with course material. slow marker

Disorganized, inconsistent, unreliable, slow marker, goes off topic, unavailable, overall poor course
World's slowest marker. Told us our papers would be ready for last week - still not.
i agree..shes awful
Worst prof I've had. She should be sacked.
Terrible course. Worst prof in department. Hopefully Department Chair has seen this. I am one of many unhappy students.
ive never experienced anything like this before in my life...lectures are a waste of time...
It'll take like a hundred years to get your papers back...and oh ...I still don't have mine :(
i agree with everything said so far - she's a joke

Yes,slow marker there was a at problem in another class.lectures didn’t cover what the pieces meant,BUT it was not her job to hold our hands through a mandatory course for an Engl major.we talked outside of class time, and she was a huge help.very caring!
Although I agree with what some people have said I don't really feel they are being fair. She had a big problem with another class and she tried her hardest to get back on track. Her enthusiam about the subject made her great.
Had lots of organization problems because of a TA that disappeared last term and left her w/ all the marking. Despite this, she's a highly competent, well-meaning, helpful, and fair prof. Had to wait a long time for my papers, but she's still a great prof
You people are brutal! She was a good prof.
nice but needs to get her act together. SO disorganized and flaky. wont be taking another course with her again if i can help it.
She was a nice lady and I`m sure if only she could get her head screwed on straight she`d be a good prof. She was interesting, but she`d go off on tangents, repeat lectures, adding 5 minutes of new material at the end, and change the syllabus a lot!
Don't get you guys. Brilliant; careful; wanted students to think for themselves with challenging material.
Anne is a fantastic prof for people who are intelligent enough to actually LISTEN to what she's saying. DUH, um, who's this Chaucer guy again? Half the retards in the 204 class probably didn't even do the reading.
I never got one assignment back on time. Try handing your work in late and see what happens! Lectuures were off topic and usually had zero educational value. She actually admitted to giving unclear directions or the mid-term and still gave out bad grades.
Anne is a great professor who seems to care a lot about the students, which is rare these days. She is very passionate about the material and is quite funny and animated. I felt she was very fair.
Well meaning lady but often got side tracked by topics that didn't have to do with the course material. For example, she spent one entire lecture showing us pictures of jesus and the virgin mary telling us that the focus is jesus' genetalia. ?!?
Anne Higgins is probably the best prof I've ever had. If you havn't been in one of her classes yet, you're missing out!!!
Anne is great despite the lateness-thing. Her so-called tangents do have a point (to those linear thinkers out there). She is a true teacher and my writing has benefitted tremendously under her advice. An 'A' from her means something.
Very seldom have I had a professor that I'd consider to be an actual TEACHER. Anne seems to actually care about presenting ideas, conscious as to whether or not she engages the class, rather than merely being a conosour of literature.
Anne is an excellent teacher who cares about her students and the literature she teaches them.
made my required Chaucer class fun
Anne, you are my favorite.
Though Anne's lectures were at times unfocused, she infused her lectures with humour and submitted fresh and interesting perspectives on the course texts. A thoroughly enjoyable prof.
Nice, but boring and unfocused.
Fantastic teacher. Interesting, charming, helpful, insightful. I would be happy to take any class that she taught.
Anne is charismatic, original, enthusiastic, and sweet. Her lectures and seminars are fab. Best English prof yet at SFU. Just the right amount of reading and course work. Will definately take any course she offers in the future.
Inspiring, supportive, interesting, and compassionate. Anne is by far the best prof I had at SFU.
WOnderful Professor. Fair, kind, interesting, funny, smart, intensely knowledgable. I would happily take any course Anne teaches. she is the best.

By a long shot, the single most understanding prof I've ever come across. She cares about students more than any I've ever seen. That is her best quality--worth taking on that account.
An amazingly knowledgeable prof with a big heart
She is slightly scatterbrained but funny. She really seems to love the material and it shows. She sort of makes the students want to love it as much as she does which is nice.
A wonderful woman and a great professor.
Spring 2K5: What a wonderful professor! Found the syllabus was lacking - a little scattered, but overall she makes the course adventurous and exciting, and she is so knowledgeable that in the end you are really glad you took Chaucer, Beowulf, etc. from her!
Excellent prof!! Anne has passion for what she teaches and does a good job making literature something more than just words. Really makes the course rich and goes beyond the core material touching linguistics, history, humanities, and philosophy. Just a delightful prof.
Energetic, dynamic, and intelligent. A bit disorganized but makes up for it with her fun and engaging lectures. Amount of work and reading was just right. Challenging but definetly not boring! One of the best profs I have encountered so far.
Kind-hearted instructor who is extremely knowledgeable. A bit disorganized in lecture. Do the readings or else you will be totally lost. Her lecture topics were quite specific. Overall, a good instructor with a surprisingly sly sense of humour.
Anne is one of the greatest professors I have ever had. She is slightly scatterbrained and tends to run off-topic but she is the most knowledgable person I have ever met. She is understanding and caring and truly loves what she is doing. She gets the points across and engages the class. She is amazing.
Lovely lady, very caring, will help you however she can. Very sweet - quite disorganized - was late for the final. But that's okay with me.
Anne is probably the best professor I've ever had. She's intelligent, interesting, and has lived an amazing life (seriously, talk to her after class and you'll find out). If you ever get a chance to take an Anne Higgins class, do it!
funny, warm, helpful, intelligent, generally lovely. sweetest faculty ive come across @SFU. inspired about what she teaches, finds a way 2 make it engaging even 4 ppl who arent into it. Openminded&receptive 2 diff interpretations, helps however she can, dont take advantage of her kindness. Takes 4ever 2return asgnmts. Makes a great prof & friend.
Such a wonderful, lovely person, and absolutely brilliant!
She's the sweetest, kindest, most caring prof ever...but she's also EXTREMELY disorganized. It took 2 months to return an assignment (so we were at a disadvantage for writing the term paper). But, the course material is awesome, and she's amazingly smart--I'd recommend taking the course with her, but DON'T take the tutorial with her.
Having Anne Higgins as a prof is like having a really lame aunt or mom as your prof. She is slow, disorganized, often goes on tangents, fuddy-duddy, has a lame sense of humour, and spends most of class time showing off her linguistics background. 80 or more percent of what we have to sit there and listen to is filler delivered sleep-inducingly.
I took English 306 - Chaucer with this prof! All I can say is..Thank God she wasn't also my tutorial intructor. Her lectures were sometimes almost completely irrelevant to the course material. If you like Chaucer, I highly suggest choosing DAVID COLEY as your prof. He's absolutely fantastic! - Cheers
Anne is extremely dedicated to her students and will personally try to help you as much as she can -- which is rare. She is warm, intelligent, knowledgeable. She takes a long time getting marks back, which is a negative, however she makes sure you know your stuff in class and tutorial. She could be better at leading discussions.
Good prof, very passionate & shows great knowledge in both Chaucer & ME in general. Although interesting, lectures are slightly irrelevant. The exam is based 100% on translations, no insight in any text is necessary since there's no essays. 1 8pg essay during the semester and about 6 short, easy quizzes. highly recommend her as a prof.
A lot of people complain that she doesn't get assignments back on time, or that she doesn't put on a big "show" during lectures. These people missed the point -- you LEARN in Anne's class. You grow as a student with Anne as your lecturer and tutorial leader. If you want to just get a grade and go on to PDP, look elsewhere.
This course was an unmitigated disaster! And I mean that -- unmitigated. Anne was incapable to do anything to keep this course from falling apart. Surprising considering she hand-picked all the students in it.
If you are willing to put forth the effort, you will never have a Professor more dedicated to helping you learn than Dr. Anne Higgins.
This teacher was horrible. Yes, she is a smart and nice woman...but she can't teach a class to save her life. She is disorganized and goes off base quite often. Do the readings in the text and you should be fine. Do not get her for your tutorial, it's completely pointless. The class structure falls apart often. Not recommended unless you need it.
Anne may be occasionally disorganized, but she's dedicated, interesting, and unbelievably helpful. I wish I had gotten the opportunity to take more classes with her. You definitely can't slide by though - know the material well and always read because she'll do pop quizzes on occasion.
Dr. Higgins is the best professor I've met in SFU! She's caring, nice and patient! She is definitely a Chaucer expert as well as Middle English. You may think her lectures are disorganized, but that's what Chaucer was- lots of issues! and you are the one to straighten them out with the assistance of Dr. Higgins :D
She's a good prof but I just really wish she spoke up. She's very soft spoken and thats what may lull you to sleep. Other than that, she is not a bad prof.
Anne spends more time showing off her linguistics background than she does lecturing about the readings. She is disorganised and spends much of the lecture on irrelevant tangents. Moreover, when she does lecture about the readings, she offers little to no historical context, making it nigh impossible to follow her.
I found her to be very disorganized. She tended to go off on tangents or give lectures that had very little to do with what we were discussing. When I approached her about help for my essay she nay-sayed all ideas until I agreed to hers, then later allowed others to write on the topics she rejected. Very frustrating class.
Anne's lectures caused me to lose interest in the topic. While she knows her stuff she shows a lot of unrelated slides and only said anything interesting and on-topic in the last five minutes of class while everyone was getting ready to leave. Would not recommend taking a class with her unless you absolutely have to. TA's were a big help.
The worst professor I've had so far. Reads off a script for lectures, rather than teaching. Sometimes rude or condescending. Passionate about her work but the TA's helped more than her teaching. VERY VERY bored in all her lectures.
Refuses to use a mic, reads of her own version of sparknotes, no notes
Professor Higgin's lectures are unhelpful, and incredibly boring. She reads off of her notes word for word which is not engaging at all. She can be rude and come off inconsiderate to students.
Anne provided a lot of expert insight into Geoffrey Chaucer's works, making them very enjoyable. Her organizational skills however, need a lot of work.
Horrible class, she barely uses a mic even though she is a soft speaker. Not a good public speaker a little shy, tends to . Seems really nice but starts to taunt students if they try to leave (mostly because no one can her). I like poetry but the class was awful, it was fairly graded I guess..
Worst professor EVER. Goes over the same poem for three lectures. Doesn't teach the necessary information, yet gives out the hardest quizzes.
I would not take her class again. I believe she has a fear of public speaking as she consistently seemed uncomfortable while speaking. Mumbled through class without and mic and the words you could hear were of no academic value. She should rethink if she would really like to teach.
Messed up prof ever. She is lazy and all over the place. All her worksheets she hands out are full of typos and grammar errors. Don't know how she became a professor. All her lectures are useless, but still expects us to know details of useless stuff. Regret taking this course so much.
Awful professor. She labors over useless information and her lectures have little to do with the assignments. Do not take a class with her if you can help it. If I wasn't predisposed to English I probably would have done poorly. If you want an easy W credit avoid at all costs.
Lectures were genuinely entertaining for how laughable they were. Refused to use a mic, but yet talks quieter than a mouse. Class was easy af though. You can google most of the poems she uses making the textbooks useless.
Higgins is one of the worst professors I've had. Her lectures are prepared speeches on the weeks topic, and not very good ones at that. She is hard to follow and incredibly dull. She reminds me of a really bad high school english teacher.
I absolutely love her teaching style. I will be taking future classes with her.
I would never take a class with her ever again. She's extremely disorganized, and half the things we learned this semester will not be on our final exam. Nothing she says in class is actually relevant to what we are learning, and she spends most of lecture rambling. Honestly, avoid her if you can.
Her lectures are not very organized. For this particular semester, half of the syllabus was omitted from the final exam (which is a pain for those who actually studied the omitted part).. and we never got Canvas set-up with the constant change of syllabus. She's passionate about the subject for sure but.. I don't know.
I can also attest that she is very disorganized and is not a good presenter. She seems nervous about speaking. Although the subject was interesting, her presentation style made it very dull. She goes on long random tangents that are dull and take away from the class. Would recommend other teachers as there are much better ones at sfu.
Not clear, quiet and talks about random and useless info. It would be funny in how bad it was if the class hadn't been worth marks. Difficult to follow for these reasons in an otherwise simple class. She was also late to class a lot.
Really clear in lectures.
As others have said on here, she's the worst professor in the English Department. Would not recommend unless you have no other choice. As countless others have said, her lectures are unclear and she rambles on.
Uninspiring and a mess.
She is a bit disorganized, but her interest is high. She is a great professor who is very good in one-on-one office hours.
She read off of other scholars notes and didn't have definitive plans for each class. Mainly read from the text as well and didn't hand back work from the semester, so you had to guess what you were going in with in the final. Overall a nice person but not a great lecturer.
She would sometimes have scattered ideas and be all over the place during lectures sometimes, but would be helpful a lot of the time. A lot of lectures don't focus on works themselves, but around other things like movie adaptations which added enjoyment. However, they weren't really helpful for the course.
I love Anne. She makes boring subjects interesting. Her assignment feedback is encouraging and makes you want to do well. She cares about the outcome of her students. I wish she could be my professor for every subject.
Anne is an incredibly kind person, and it's apparent in her treatment of her students. Her lectures are very informative, although she has a soft voice so I would recommend sitting close to the front. She's very helpful if you choose to pursue her outside of class, only down side is that she's very disorganized. Shame really.
Very disorganized and lectures are not helpful
Extremely disorganized and lectures seemed pointless. She needs to use a mic and better visual aids. Not very engaging.
Calls you out infront of the class if you're not sitting up straight, even though you're paying attention to her lecture.
No very good, disorganized, not very useful, and boring. Anne likes to focus on the most subjective aspects of english while barley prepares you to write for her assignments and finals. Our class did not have a syllabus until like the 3rd week, then it changed multiple times in the following weeks. also disrespectful to her students.
First time taking her. Lectures are all over the place with little to no direction. It was a Chaucer course, and students who are not familiar with his work would be very lost. Many of the deadlines changed as well, so it was confusing. However, if you go and see her, she is very helpful. She is also willing to do extensions and talk one on one.
Anne Higgins is the WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. She CONSTANTLY calls people out in class for being on their laptops FOR TAKING NOTES. She whistled at us to get our attention. She is SO rude and SO unorganized. She didn't have our course outline for a month. She is retiring this year so no one will have to suffer being in her AWFUL class.
I don't know how or why she became a professor. No one in their right mind would have given this woman a degree to teach. She rambles on about NOTHING in class and expects you to know it for the final. She went behind her word about the final and constantly changed it. I have never disliked a professor this much in my whole life. PASS.
Anne was the most disorganized and I've ever had. her lectures were literally her reading a speech with the worst possible visual aids ever as her powerpoints that were the least bit helpful. she is so technologically impaired it hurt my soul watching her try to figure things out. So rude she whistled at students who were taking notes on laptops
Extremely caring and amazing prof those who are criticizing her didn't get to know her. Class is disorganized but she's one of the best profs ive had
I went back to school as a mature student, originally planning to major in History. Anne was my favourite prof and one of the main reasons I switched to English. She is endlessly engaging and passionate, with a truly wide-ranging intellect. If you are interested in broadening your horizons as opposed to simply getting a credit, you can't do better.
I have the honour of having Dr. Higgins as my professor from first year until fourth. She made me think, she made me work and she made me excited about English that never had in former years. I think she is a gem, an inspiration and most importantly a decent human being. Thank you SFU for choosing wonderful professors.
