This teacher was pretty cool in my opinion. She's really smart and helpful, also she is easy to meet with and discuss any problems you are having. Her class wasn't really all that boring either. Pretty upbeat for an English composition II class.
Nice lady, helpful, will meet with you, et cetera. The fact is, though, she will make you work more for your grade than any other English teacher I've encountered.

She seems condecending, and her voice is kinda annoying, but it is a class you can get through easily as long as you show up.
I agree with the condescending comment. I don't need to kiss up to a teacher just to get a good grade.
She is an excellent teacher and is very clear on all of the assignments. At first I thought that she was a tough grader, but as long as you follow her instructions then you will do fine. She actually cares about her students. I ended up with an A, one of my favorite teachers by far!
Mrs. Dearing was a bit intimidating at first, but she's a great teacher and has the best sense of humor. She also lays out everything she expects from you at the very beginning. If you show up and do the assigned work, you will have no problems.

First you may think she is tough but when you get to know her she is the best teacher!!! She is very funny sometimes. :) You have to do your work!, and it's very easy class to pass.
This teacher is great. She is strict but you learn so much from her. She works by the book. She also has a strict attendance policy so COME TO CLASS. I highly recommend her for people who are not slackers and hand in work on time.

you think you're a good writer? think again. her class makes you feel like your writing will NEVER be good enough. no matter how hard you try, nothing you hand in will ever be perfect. also, if more than 2 or 3 words you are paraphrasing match the original exactly -- PLAGARISM. plus she's mean to the slower kids in class.
She is a great professor. If you are the type of student who does your work, (ON TIME) and comes to class, you will not have a problem. This is COLLEGE, you have a choice to come to class or not, you paid for it, if you skip she takes points away from your grade, it's that simple. I would highly suggest her for NON slackers.

She is helpful, she is sarcastic, and definitly a good teacher. Do not text in her class! There is always room for improvement in your writing and she will definitly be the one to show you how to write better. Don't let her intimidate you, she is understanding and nice if you show her you want to learn.
Very good teacher - She knows what she's doing. My class was a bit uncooperative so she had to be strict at times but if you're a good student, you should have no problem in her class. Just do the work and don't plagiarize.

Unless you're lazy or just downright retarded, there's no reason why you can't pull off at least a B in her class. She may seem strict at first, but don't let her intimidate you.If you put effort into the class and show her that you want to learn, she can be very helpful and nice. She's also extremely sarcastic, but it's hilarious.DON'T PLAGIARIZE!
She is so nice & easy to understand. Everything is so clear that there's no way to fail this class..unless you miss class everyday. She is very strict but sometimes she makes you laugh with her jokes. I really recomend her to everyone if you really want to learn how to write &/or become better in English. =)
Horrible teacher!! Likes to put people down. Not very nice. Always makes sure to give all her students a hard time about missed work. Grading policy is ridiculous. If you love writing don't take this class, it will shatter your world.

I did not enjoy class with this lady. English has always been one of my best subjects and i received a D in her course, which looked odd on my transcript with grades of all A's. So basically this course is tough, not because the work is hard but because she rarely made herself clear. I did not enjoy her class one bit, and she is way to sarcastic!

Dearing's a hardass. Don't take her if you like to write. Everything you write that will earn you a good grade feels forced. She does respond quickly to emails, but don't expect her to cut you any slack. She accepts some late work. Def rent the current editions of the book (she's on some textbook approval board), you'll use them all the time
Not as hard as most will say but you definitely drew the short end of the stick if you get Dearing. She is sarcastic and tough, you won't get many breaks with her. She is very technical and you will earn your grade in her class. Overall I DO NOT recommend her.

Evil. I used to enjoy English and always prided myself on my competency in English. I used to love writing. She has killed my passion and made me feel inept. Cannot make her happy no matter what!
Shes a terrible teacher
Put minimal effort you can get a B. She follows a clear structure. Format is more important then content. If instructions are followed exactly than an A will be given, even if it is poorly written. She comes off as being elitist and her jokes are not funny, and she knows it. Worst: she has little faith in her students
She is very tough to please with work. Papers ALWAYS need to be formatted with proper heading she tells you on first day of class how to do it. I found her class very stressful because she gives a lot of reading assignments out of both of the books and gives tests! So make sure you read the stuff or you'll regret not! Overall, I would AVOID her
she prides on bringing down her students. she loves to hear herself talk and spends everyday lecturing you rather than teaching you. was the biggest waste of my time here at HVCC.
If you want to go feel as if you're being taught in a college English comp course, this is the teacher. Very helpful and has a pretty straight forward class structure. You will need the text books to pass though.
Very hard grader. Gives very few A's on assignments. Has mandatory Test every two weeks. All things being equal, one of the best teachers I have studied under. You will actually learn to do things the right way. If you are a hard worker and take pride in your studies take her. She is very funny!
This teacher was and still is the worst teacher I have ever had. She is very good at putting students down and is very sarcastic. She kind of reminds me of a Nazi sometimes. She assigns way too much work and has no remorse for any ones outside life even if its other course work. Way too many in class quizzes too. To date we have had 1 every week.
I don't see how anybody with a full courseload could pass this class. Dearing will take many points off for small mistakes. English has always come easy for me, but she made it difficult. Not to mention the time that you will waste showing up to cancelled classes with no email beforehand or to classes that will only last 10 minutes.
I took her summer course, large amount of coursework. Intense grader with very few A's at all. Be there and do every assignment, you may not do well.

I am currently taking professor Dearing's English Composition II class. I plan on dropping it. She is a very tough grader. She puts people on the spot for simple mistakes that were probably an accident. She is extremely rude and talks down to her students. Worst teacher I've had for English.
I loved english prior to taking this class but Dearing ruined it as a subject for me. I wish I had listened to the ratings and dropped the class. Worst teacher ever. She is a very tough grader!! I am a student that usually does very well in English courses and I was struggling a bit. It's rare to get an A. I believe the only way I passed is because that was the only class I was taking that semester.
She has fallen in love with the red pen more than the subject. Not very understanding and never wrong.
I would say Professor Dearing has been teaching for so long she no longer seems to keep up with the students and the changing world around her. She is cynical, rude and very condescending towards the student body as a whole. Her grading criteria is ridiculously anal and she constantly feels the need to remind everyone of the obvious. Avoid her.
Stay away from this teacher you will regret taking her. She is sarcastic, mean and thinks she is better than everybody else. She will cancel classes without any notice and the course load is absolutely insane. If you enjoy writing Stay away !!!!!
I haven't taken an English Comp class in many many years. I did learn a lot. The bottom line--go to class, do the work, turn it in on time and you will get an 'A.' Pretty much sums up any class.
In my opinion, I feel as though people expect an English class to be an easy A. Professor Dearing actually makes you work for your grades. This is COLLEGE; people should be thankful that she pushes her students to the limit in order to better them as a whole. Show up to class and do your assignments. You will appreciate it later.

Do not take this class with Dearing. She is a perfectionist, will not take no for an answer. College grading is understandable, but her feedback is very confusing. She has a bad attitude showing up to class. She shows up 5-10 minutes late to class most of the time. Her instructions on the final research paper are convoluted. Pick a different pro.
The professor is only there for herself. Do not take this class with her. If you like to receive papers that are handed back in a grade that you worked hard for, pick a different class. Highest grade she gives out is a C. Be prepared to try your hardest and not get credit for it. She definitely decreased everyone confidence. Do not take her class.

Professor Dearing was an interesting professor. Throughout the semester, she showed a real passion for English. She tried to be funny, although it was quite often at the expense of her students. If you don't cite sources when you write a paper, she will fail you. She is very strict about MLA formatting but if you apply yourself, she is helpful.
Don't do it. No! RUN! Find another professor. Took comp 2 online. She never gives a grade higher than a B. Really I asked her. She said it's very rare she gives an A unless its advanced college work. Go to the next professor.
I withdrew from her class. She is super tough and the class average can be between the C and D range at times. A lot of writing is expected in and out of class and is super strict about grammar and MLA format, one mistake and you are done. The class went down to about 8 students from being full when I withdrew. She "tries" to be funny.
Devote your life to her class, work hard, make many sacrifices and you will still not smell the paradise of an A. Only thing I liked about her class was before the research project.

Grades really hard. I do not recommend. Did not enjoy this class what so ever and felt really discouraged. On one of my descriptive essays we had to do for class, she wrote "too much description". I'm sorry what?? Awful
She was not there for the first two days of class and most of the majority of the semester. But she's very strict with absences for students which I think is stupid and makes her a hypocrite. She's very rude and egotistical. She's a grader nazi so don't expect to get an A. Overall, I recommend you don't take her and just leave her class now.

Very unpleasant instructor. I immediately dropped her class after the third day of having to sit in her classroom. Miserable. Also the first thing she assigned was to write a biography about our personal lives and then present it orally in front of the class on the third day, awkward. Expect reading due every class and numerous essays & tests.
Professor Dearing's class is definitely not easy but she is without a doubt a great teacher. You really have to work for a good grade and attendance is mandatory to pass. Overall she was very helpful though, and wants success for her students. I would not recommend this class if you don't like reading. She also was very helpful with writing papers.
I have never had a professor who was more vague on what she wanted from us when it came to assignments. The only student who got above a C was the girl who got Dearing a fifty dollar gift-card to D&D. This teacher does not care about her students and her lectures never matched up to what we read in the text books. Avoid her at all costs.

Do NOT, and I repeat, DO NOT take this woman's class. Never in my adolescent life have I stressed so much about any academic subject but this course is absolutely abysmal. She takes off a final letter grade for every 6 classes missed so don't skip too offen. Her quizzes are easy grade boosters and she teaches pretty straight to the book. If you're bad at English you might struggle a little bit, however she's a hardass, and though her expectations are clear, she grades tough. I would take her again if I had to.
Prof. Dearing isn't a bad teacher. Things to note about her class: 6 absences bring you down a letter grade. Being late by 10 minutes 4 times counts as an absence. The final paper isn't accepted late, not even later that day. She teaches grammar and essay structure. If you want to read poems and analyze symbolism, this isn't the class for you.
An honest (yet sometimes hard hitting) professor who excels at making you put effort into work at the things you need to accomplish for the class. Do not expect to go in for an "Easy A", and do not expect there to be special treatment. You do the work, you earn your grade. Whether it's good or bad, that's on you. Read. Don't mess around.

WORST PROFESSOR EVER! I have never had anything below an A in English and I have a D. I have never been so dissappointed in a professor in my life. She is terrible and she is very mean and often comes off as rude. She calls people out and she tears them apart. shes like a vicious DRAGON. she skipped class more than I did and were way behind.
Worst professor ever. Continually puts us down. Ex: "Who could be more stupid? My students that's who."
Mrs. Dearing has to hands down be the worst & most difficult professor you'll have to deal with at HVCC. The first day of classes she makes it very known that she rarely hands out A's. She is consistently late to class every week even though she drops your grade after some odd amount of absences. DO NOT take her, she'll turn your hair grey!
A real tough grader, I wrote a paper for her class which was immaculate and she gave me a B. I went to the writing and research center, they didn't see any mistakes. It's like she comes to HVCC hoping she can fail all her students. She takes 1 hour and a half to grade a paper which means she doesn't plan on giving you a good grade from the start.
Do not take her class she is by far the meanest teacher I have ever had she is rude and does not care about anything, I brought in a doctors note and she told me thats still not an excuse for an absence I still have not got back one of my essays she takes forever to grade them and by the way the class has been over for a month

I have never had a teacher so rude and unhelpful in my academic career. Her directions on her online class were unclear and if you ask questions about it she is condescending.
Shes absolutely the worst. Hasn't been understanding at all with the pandemic and online learning .Shes anal about everything you submit even though you can only correct SIMPLE GRAMMER SO MUCH. Her class schedule is a mess you'll never know whats due. If you ask a question u probably won't get an answer but only a repeat of what you did wrong

Professor Dearing makes little effort to clearly indicate deadlines in her online course. Despite having a course outline, you'll often lose credit despite assignments not being on the outline at the specified date. The teacher seemingly has no perspective whatsoever as she expects more from students in this 101 level class than any other teacher.
Please be careful taking courses with Professors who either do not use blackboard or don't know how to! Professor Dearing was one of those. I took her engl class in Fall 2020 over zoom and never again. Doesn't have set deadlines, takes long to grade if they're not in class assignments, she's not very organized. Homework load wasn't too bad though.
Be prepared to get lectured, ON LIFE. First half hour of class will be dedicated on her opinion of some random thing. Also she is always inevitably late. And she will TRY to make you stay after class to finish her lecture because she wasted her time by aforementioned things. Her gradings are unreasonable, you wont know what you did wrong. Bad
If you think she would give you a grade for just submitting work that does not show your hard work, then you should have chosen someone else. The most unclear grading system I have ever seen. She marks things wrong for seemingly no reason and with no explanation. I turned in a paper entitled "Bringing Home the Gold" and she crossed out gold and wrote "Trophy?" Umm... why?? Not only that but she was directly exposed to covid the last weeks of class and taught with no mask and a cough.
Feels as if I am being shunned by my grandmother for 90% of the class time. Consistently finds a way to bring down the mood of the room and does nothing but complain and poke unwanted fun at students. Unclear grading system. Hypocritical rules that she cannot adhere to. Would not recommend.
She is a good teacher one on one but in class she can be very intimidating and harsh when it comes to grading
I took her class Spring 2023, but dropped it early with other students because it was going nowhere. She's been teaching a long time, but she spent most classes venting to us about other matters in her life. Odd grading system, and her feedback is VERY unclear. She uses abbreviations for EVERYTHING as opposed to writing it out. Beware!

She is hands down THE WORST PROFFESOR. She told us the first day of class whatever we thought we were going to get to knock the grade down by a full letter grade. She grades with symbols that look closer to Egyptian Hieroglyphics, than actual english language. Do not take her class you will probably want to drop out of college as a whole.
She is okay one-on-one but in the classroom she is horrible. She once yelled at my class for 30 minutes and said how "horrible" (yes she said that) everyone's essays were. I have never been so uncomfortable in a class before. Hands down the worst professor I have ever had.
I loved this course; it helped me improve my writing a lot. Outside of class, she is down to help with writing assignments, and her input is useful. Her lectures are packed with writing tips. The assignments are mostly easy, and she helps a lot with the research paper. Do not bother taking the class if you have bad attendance, you will fall behind.

Worst professor I've ever had in college. She yells at you for being 5 minutes late, yet she's allowed to be late and force you to stay after class to finish up her lectures. She heavily favors pick-me students and even gives them extra points on assignments. She'll take points away from essays because the title was not to her liking. Never again.
She is rude, disrespectful, and mean. I am not one to write bad reviews because I fear hurting others, but she has hurt me, mentally, this whole semester. I cannot count the number of times she has yelled at the entire class over something as small as getting a bad grade on a homework assignment or coming in late. We ALL had zeros on assignments.
This class will be your worst nightmare!! She is impossible to please no matter how many time you try to make changes according to HER feedback (which is mediocre at best...). Also if you an issue with attending class do not even bother. She would not let me turn in my FINAL PAPER becasue I missed three classes all semster. BEWARE!
