Anne is a very clear teacher. This class contains much work, but I would have to say that this is the most I have ever learned in an english class. She grades somewhat hard but only to make someone learn. I passed with a B+ I recommend her.
Very willing to help students. Not the easiest teacher, but you learn a lot.
she is a good teacer, but very hard. Some of the topics were not interenting. you will have fun.
Very condescending, very highschool, very much a technocrat.
I really love this teacher, she's helping me get more into writing and she's really fun. I was really afraid of taking english but I find that my fears went out the window when I met my teacher.
Good teacher

She is one of my favorite teachers. She is tough and a little strict, but she is so sweet and she is very passionate about what she teaches that it makes me interested in English when I wasn't before. I would deffinately reccommend her, but be prepared to write alot!
If you don't read, and follow the advice of, her comments in your essays, you won't succeed very well in the class. The tests are relatively easy, but annotate any readings she assigns (it will help a lot in the final).
I took her class at SSU. She's really quirky in an innocent and naive way. She is a great teacher and allows for great discussions in class. She's a tough grader b/c she wants your writing to improve and won't let things slide, which if you want to progress is great. Attendance is a must. 3 and you automatically fail. Great professor.
GREAT TEACHER! intimidating at first b/c of her expectations and her hard grading but she really improves ur writing skills. you can tell she really cares about her students and willing to help. has an enormous passion for english. it's def. a worthwhile class BUT now if ure a slacker or want an easy class.
I loved Prof. Insull. She is a tough grader, but if you love grammar and English you will have no problem. There was a pretty big workload, but all of it is enjoyable. I'm glad I took her as a teacher because I grew as a writer (and a person) so much. If you can handle hard work, I absolutely recommend her class!
This woman is mental. Her tests and quizes are unresonable. She does not have a clear grasp of the material she is teaching. She is the toughest grader I ever had. Avoid this teacher if at all possible.
wasn't pleased with her teaching style. She's very strict with her rules and grading, be sure to follow instructions carefully.
Anne Marie is a wonderful teacher for 46.1. It is a tough class because there is so much reading, but it is worth it. If you do the assigned reading and homework, you'll do fine. However, it helps if you write well prior to taking the class. Slackers don't do well with Anne Marie, so make sure you are interested in the subject.
little homework, lots of discussions
very good teacher, learned alot!! helped me with my writing skills.
Anne Marie is an excellent teacher. Not only is she very committed to helping her students improve their writing, but she has a wonderful style of teaching. Do not expect an easy A though! Anne Marie expects you to use all grammar she teaches to be used in your essays. Likewise, she expects well-written work. Not much reading but sign up for her!!
Anne Marie is an amazing teacher, and is very helpful. She is not an easy teacher to get an A. She teaches you lots of grammar and expects you to use it in your writing. She also expects a lot of your essays, not those cookie-cutter ones that I could do well in high school with. I would highly recommend her if you wanna improve your English skills.
MUST READ: if ur looking 4 a class that will prepare u 4 college writing, by all means take this class...BUT if u hope to cruise through class, b late whenev bcuz ur a college student that pays 4 the classes u take THINK AGAIN! I feel beyond prepred 4 harder courses now but she's a tardy freak & treats not bringing ur books 2 class like a sin.
Actually likes what she teaches and is passionate about it. It's quite a bit of work, but you actually learn in this class. She's very nice and offers extra credit!
Fantastic teacher! Anne Marie is amazing! When I first started the class I thought that she was a little too nit-picky about writing, but by the end of the semester I can say that I have leared to more deeply analyze what I read and to write SO much better! Class is not easy, a lot of reading and writing, but she does give extra credit!
Awsome teacher
Insull taught highschool for fifteen years. I never went to highschool and was excited about my first semester. The class wasn't centered around learning, but getting the students with highschooler mentalities to get their acts together. I felt dispirited. A class like that would work great for some people, though.
Veryyyy Good teacher. Nicest teacher i have had throughout college. Anne Marie will help you understand anything you need help with and until you fully understand. It is a hard working class, but it will definitely over prepare you for English 1A. Homework every night, but very easy tests. Lots of reading but very good books. highly suggest her.
This class was excellent. The discussions in her class were wonderful. She gives easy assignments and quizes (they are easy if you are one of the ones who does their homework). English is my least favorite subject because English and me do not mix well. However, She is a great teacher, and I passed her class with an A.
She is a wonderful teacher. The previous semester i had a teacher that gave me As on my essays so i was a little shocked when i got my first essay bck with a C. but she is so helpful and really wants all her students to succeed. i think she truely prepared me for english 1a and i would recommend her to anyone.
Anne Marie is awesome! Definitely one of my favorite teachers here at the JC. I learned so much from her, even though I didn't use her office hours very much. She is warm and loves her job. If you need help with your grammar, writing and vocabulary, then you should definitely take her. A lot of work involved, but not too hard. You learn a lot!
Anne Marie is a wonderful teacher with a real passion for english. By no means is this class easy. You will work your tail off, but learn a great deal from her. I highly reccomend this class for anyone wishing to succeed in 1A. She always there during her office hours and if you dont understand something she is there to guide you. Awesome teacher!
Anne Marie Insull will not give you a good grade unless you write every assignment, study every word chosen, and place punctuation perfectly. She pushes forth her best effort to create an atmosphere in which is similar to Engl 1A. She ensures students who pass her class an easy route through 1A. Hard work is key. She taught me civility.
Doesn't clarify homework well and is extremely hard to get an A in. Also nitpicks homework if not perfect. Would not recommend if your not into english that much.
This class will drive you crazy in the moment that you're taking it and you will wonder why you decided to take her class, but once you get into English 1A you will think it's a breeze while other students think it's rocket science and that's thanks to Insull.
I LOVE ANNE MARIE. She is so wonderful, and treats you like a college student. She allows for interesting class discussions, does a great text analysis and won't let you slack off. You've really got to try to get good essay grades, and her reading quizzes are ALL on character. Always come to class prepared. In fact, always come to class period.
I love Anne Marie!! She's great. She expects the best from you, and it is not an easy A. Always be on time, do your work and pay attention and you will love her too!
Nick picky, homework has to exactly like she say or you get a C or D. Her way or the highway. Judgmental, if she doesn't like you she will fail you. You can learn a lot of grammar though, wish she was nicer though.
This is the best prof I've ever had. I've learned more in her class than I have in all my education. Come to class, pay attention, bring your books and try. She wants to see you learn, and if that means you retake the class, so be it. She's a gem, and there aren't many like her out there. Take this class! You'll learn grammar, too. :)
Anne Marie is the sweetest woman I've ever met! She is 100% dedicated to her students and will bend-over-backwords to help. She is easy to talk to and genuinely cares about her students and their opinions. If you're not a fan of English she'll make it fun and easy. She really made morning classes enjoyable. You'll never want to miss her class!
Anne Marie is HANDS DOWN the best professor at the SRJC. I see her around on campus and she is still very friendly. She is strictly about ENGLISH, but is so helpful that you want to learn
Very tough grader but great class and enjoyable assignments. Anne Marie is very nice and encourages you to do your best. She requires a lot from you but its worth it if your up for a challenge.
one of the sweetest and inspirational teachers I've ever had. Her passion is English and it shows in her teaching that she wants everyone else to love the subject as much as she does. She isn't a pushover and she can be quite tough; it is only because she goes over all the material clearly and gives plenty of time to do the work. BEST TEACHER!
I can say nothing bad. The course load was manageable and the grades were fair. But what made the class great was the environment that she created. Everyone interacted with each other and got along. Class discussions got a lot of people engaged. You can tell that she loves this stuff and it kind of rubs off on you.
Anne Marie is a great professor and a very cool lady. You just need to do what she asks of you and make a real effort and you will really enjoy her class.
Anne Marie is my favorite teacher. Her class is hard because she expects students to work hard. However she is very helpful and wants everyone to succeeded. She loves her students and her subjects. I am so glad I took her class and I highly recommend her if you really want to polish your English. She is an incredible person! (she gives fair grades)
She's an entergetic, spirited, gifted, honest, humorous, and a forgiving teacher. Strict but fair. You get what you earn. She's helpful and broke the ice for us on the first day, for we knew all our classmates names, so it was fun and sociable. She let us eat in class. She's to be respected. Go Anne Marie! Hope to see you for ENGL 1A.
no late work period. opinions are very strong. approach with caution.
She grades tough but her class is very enjoyable. She gets everyone to interact and lets the students discuss the books in an open fashion. She is very approachable if you need help and wants everyone to succeed. I would take her class again in a heartbeat if she taught classes higher than 1B
Anne Marie is an amazing instructor. She is super sweet and understanding. A few reading quizzes, but mostly class discussions. Four important essays, but not hard if you read and listen in class.
I loved how interested she was in the class and what we thought. Made me interested in learning
Although I learned a lot in her class, she was an incredibly picky grader. Unless you are really a good writer, I would not suggest this class. Her teaching style made you feel as if you were still in high school. She is not a flexible teacher, so it's important to pay attention to her requirement.
Anne Marie is so nice and has best hopes and wishes for all her students. If you take ENGL 1A, be prepared for some tough reading. Annotate, research and listening are main focus points. Also, get really good at MLA format and it should be smooth sailing. Anne Marie is a great teacher and I'm sad to leave the class.
Anne-Marie is by far the best English teacher I have ever had! She's extremely engaging, her lectures are fun and it feels like a privilege to be taking her class. Definitely would take again!
I absolutely love Anne Marie! Such a sweet lady and a really amazing teacher. She truly cares about her students and genuinely wants you to succeed. She helped me improve my grammar and writing and I feel like I am ready for 1A because of her. Definitely would take her again and I would recommend taking her your first semester :)
Anne Marie was a wonderful teacher! I would definitely recommend her! She is very sweet and always super inspirational; you can tell she cares very much about her students! As long as you try, and put in the extra effort for your grade, you will pass with no problem.
Absolutely terrible, barely helps you of your struggling and forces you to use the writing lab as part of the grade. Does not understand people have full schedules and punishes you for not devoting your whole time to her class. Doesn't show you how to structure papers just says do it. If you want boring lectures, extreme grading, and stress, Anne!
The 3 comments below are upset because they earned a lower grade than they wanted. Anne Marie is the sweetest human being I've ever known. She grades based on legitimate standards and is incredibly honest. She would never give someone a grade they didn't earn, either good or bad. She's fair, charming, and all around lovely. I recommend her.
Often found herself not sure about what she was talking about. Would always say, I don't know the answer, yet she grades your work like she knows everything, extremely poor on schedule timing and assignments often are pointless and make no sense, also has short deadlines on big papers . This was more of a philosophy class, were she was always right
Hard class, but you'll learn a lot if you try. She's a sweet person and will help if you ask. Use her office hours! Requirements for papers are spelled out on the rubric. She can be rigid about deadlines and such, but that's understandable for a teacher. Overall, this is the sort of teacher where you get back what you put in. Highly recommend her.
very passionate. super sweet. I don't really like the material she taught. assigned essays late and I did not do well on her essays, (Im an A student). so I was disappointed in how she graded my essays. ultimately ended with a B.
Professor Insull is a very sweet human being, but she's a very difficult instructor to please. Her grading criteria is very difficult and confusing. She also has short deadlines on her essays since other assignments are due at the same time. Be prepared to struggle and get vague feedback from her. Only gifted writers should take her class.
If you're a slacker don't take her. She expects you to show up everyday, prepared, & on time. (Go figure) With that out of the way... She's a great teacher & a fair grader. Her instructions are clear if you pay atten. VERY PERSONABLE! Note: She's not avail. outside of class as much as she leads you to believe. Be prepare to use writing lab
She's extremely forgetful. She would tell you one thing one day and act like she never said it the next. She doesn't treat people like they're in college. You have to ask to leave. I highly recommend you to take another English teacher.
This class with Ann Marie was personally the best class I have ever taken in college. If attention is not paid to positive critique and constructive criticism, one may not pass. She will help her students through the work and although the class is tough, it is well worth it. For me, this class was harder than others at Sonoma St but more rewarding.
She doesn't talk to you like you're an adult in college. Every class was a flashback to the days when I had to ask permission to go the bathroom.
I feel like I got more help from her assistant than I did her. A lot of times I was given wrong information by the assistant. I believe that the teacher should help more than the assistant because the teacher is the one that grades your paper and should know how to help you best.
I did get a B+ in the class, however, I worked really hard for it. Insull did not help me at all. I used the writing lab from time to time . Her pal helped me more than she did but was not very good at explaining things and often gave me the wrong information. I was really stressed from the lack of help that I received. I wouldn't take her class.
She lets you know what is expected at the first of the semester. If you work hard she will like you. Sometimes she forgets to tell you something, and expects you to just know.
I have been with Anne Marie for 1A, 1B, and 27. She's rigorous and sticks to policies outlined in the syllabus. If you want an easy A, look elsewhere. If you want to actually learn, she's your gal. She's accessible through email/office hours (though there is often a line), and even holds individual writing conferences. She cares deeply! Take her!
I took her class two years ago. She really makes you work for your grade but was easily the best English teacher I've ever had. Her passion for what she was teaching shined through every day and made it really easy to look forward to every class. One of the best professors I've ever had at the JC.
Anne is my favorite professor at the JC hands down. Her English 5 class isn't designed for English majors, it's designed for people who want to talk about what's really going on in the world. The homework is interesting and the discussions help to saturate you with knowledge. She is amazingly kind and makes you a stronger thinker. Inspiring woman.
Anne Marie changed my perspective on English! I'm more of a science person and didn't believe in my English skills. Got an A in her class after lots of hard work! Very worth taking her class. Has you think about life. Just do the homework and read, and you'll do great! Lots of interesting class discussions that will not leave you bored.
Take her classes. She makes English fun and makes you form opinions on things you usually wouldn't which acts as a really effective way of making you care about the material. She clearly puts the work in front of you but you need to put the effort in if you want to succeed.
She really wants you to becomes a better writer and is very helpful. She picked great books for us to read and every class was enjoyable, we would have so much fun that we would run out of time. If I could I would take her for english 5 for sure.
I took Anne Marie for two semesters in English before 1A. She is tough in the begining, then she let's off the load some. She demands respect, and dislikes tartiness. She teaches to where you just get it. I found my love for writing in her class. I really appreciated her touching on philosophy.
I absolutely LOVED her as a professor! She is very caring and is always willing to help if you ask. She also gives you the opportunity to rewrite papers (if she feels the class didnt do as well) and offers extra credit. You will be reading and annotating a lot in a short amount of time. Take her class if you have the opportunity!!!
I had her for Eng1A my first semester at SRJC. Such a sweet teacher, absolutely loved her and her class. I looked forward to going to class every Mon&wed because her class was fun! Be prepared to do a lot of reading and annotating and group discussions during class. Tough grader but she would give amazing feedback on essays.
Actually had Professor Insull for English 46.2 but she was a great professor and very educated in her field.
There aren't enough superlatives in the English language to desecibe my feelings for Anne Marie. She will challenge you, and there is a ton of reading, but you will never feel so satisfied to get an A or B in a class. She is a beautiful person inside and out, and I feel so lucky to have met her.
Anne Marie is the hidden gem of SRJC. She is super passionate about her job, and always tries to instill that passion among her students. There is always a ton of reading and annotating, but she makes the quizzes so that if you did the reading you should pass. She also offers EC opportunities. Highly recommend Anne Marie for any English courses!
Anne Marie is the sweetest! She has made my first semester very enjoyable. She is very thorough and helpful with anything and everything. She can be a tough grader but she is sure to show you your mistkaes in order to better your education for your future. Anne Marie truly shows what love in the classroom means in a proffesional manner.
Anne Marie makes class fun and leads great discussion which is nice at first. But she wont actually teach you much of what you need to know to succeed in class and is also a tough grader. I would not recommend her if you care about your gpa or have difficulty writing essays.
Anne Marie is truly wonderful. If you care about your education, she is the perfect professor to have. She is devoted to giving you the education you deserve, which is why she is tough on assignments. My writing improved like I never thought it would. She inspires me to keep working on my writing and to become a book hoarder. lol
Be prepared to have your major, and by extension your life choices, belittled if it is outside of her scope of "acceptable" majors. She feels like a high school teacher where you will get scolded if you leave, even just to go to the bathroom. Overall Anne Marie's class causes nothing but stress, don't take her if you care about your grade.
Let me start of by saying, she is an amazing person. She truly values your presence in the class and makes you feel special but when it come down to school work it is different. She pushes you to learn and I did learn a lot. At the same time I was extremely stressed to be in class and always worried when getting grades. NOT an easy A.
Anne Marie is AMAZING, she shows she cares about your education. She is a tough grader but if you meet her in office hours or go to the writing center for help you will definitely pass the class. She is my favorite teacher by far, she creates a GREAT classroom environment which makes want to go to class and miss it when you don't go.
Anne Marie is amazing!! I learned SO MUCH from her class. It was by no means an easy A, but if you want to learn and are willing to work hard, take English from her. She really cares about her students and makes time outside class to help you. She is a tough grader, but consistent. If you put in the time and effort you'll do fine. Highly recommend!
Anne Marie is a great professor to acclimate you to college level education. She still cares and looks out for you like a highschool teacher would, but only during the beginning. If you want a classroom environment where you are able to discuss openly with the class I think Anne Marie is a great choice.
This class was so hard that a fourth of my classmates dropped. This class should be your top priority for a semester, and it was kind of jarring for somebody out of high school. Insull herself is a great professor who is very engaged with her lessons. GREAT choice for English majors or any talented writers, but otherwise I wouldn't recommend.
You never know what to expect in class due to her moods. Sometimes shell act sweet, and other times she takes her personal issues out on the class, and will call out people she doesnt like. She grades extremely harshly, saying its because this is college but she doesnt actually teach you anything you havent learned in early high school.
Anne Marie, herself is a generally sweet person, although in order to have a good class everyone has to have their work done and everyone has to be on time. She is very strict,no late work, and isn't forgiving for the small mistakes you may make in a paper. I do not recommend taking her unless you are seriously serious about your English courses.
Caring and inspiring teacher who sees students as people. Anne Marie helps not only teach the content but also convinces her students to enjoy the material. Through engaging lectures and interesting prompts she creates an engaging and beautiful classroom environment.
Man, Insull is a shark! Not an easy A and very much challenging you to grow. I didn't like her at first, admittedly, but came around to really enjoy her and the material. Her classes are for serious students who enjoy being challenged and connecting with their teachers on ways to grow as a student. She is also receptive to learning from students.
Ann Marie is passionate about English, but she is too emotional. Her judgment is clouded by her mood and can cause outbursts in students. She isn't afraid to embarrass or call you out in front of everyone in the class, especially if you are late. She lacks respect if she has any reason to like you and will grade you for it.
She was fine I guess, dont take the class if you suck at speaking publicly like me though. She got mad at me one time cause I didn't talk and told me to leave. eh. The class is mostly about getting other people's feedback on your writting, I didn't get a lot because I don't like talking so it was kind of pointless for me. Writing's fun tho.
This is an unusual but great class Expect reading and writing homework that you get out what you put into until the last few weeks, when you just work on your final portfolio. She gives really good feedback and is available in the writing center. She's also old fashioned. You'll be writing a lot on paper and annotating books/printed readings.
Anne Marie is very passionate and sweet. There's a lot of homework but all of it is interesting and the class discussions further your understanding of the text. She also allowed for more options on projects than just writing essays which I appreciated
Anne Marie Insull is a good professor in teaching English who challenged my writing which helped make me a better writer. The only negative thing I will say is that I did not appreciate the microaggression comments Anne Marie made towards me and other POC Hispanic/ Latinx students in that class.
Anne Marie's class is challenging but rewarding. With a lot of reading and annotating, the quizzes are fair if you put in the work. unstuckstudy was a game-changer for my study prep. Highly recommend this passionate professor.
Anne Marie is absolutely amazing. She cares deeply for her students and isn't afraid to show it. She gives fantastic feedback on assignments and values what students say. Definitely would go into her classes looking for knowledge, not just credit. Very fair grader and treats students equally.
Anne Marie will make you think! Definitely some questionable comments during class, but overall enticing discussions. Be ready to hand write basically everything. A little old fashioned, so be ready with physical copies of books (and get some highlighters). She's very supportive as a teacher, clearly loves what she does, and wants you to improve.
