Very hard marker, made content confusing at times
Very good prof. She engaged interesting discussion topics, and made sure the class was part of the lectures. She also makes an attempt to get to know everyone in the class. Only complaint is a very tough marker, but if you listen to the lectures and read the text, you should be alrite.
Her lectures have no structure, shes a hard marker and doesn't make it clear what we should be studying for exams
Well although she can seem like a ****, she is REALLY nice when you go to her office to see her. The only problem is that this class is too advanced compared to Orlova's CRM 100.
Almost no notes, just ramble in class. so u have to read the text book. hard marker, only get higher mark when TA marks the work. nice lady, but shoudn't be teaching..
She seems mean at first, but really has a passion for what she teaches. She can be harsh, but if you respect her she will respect you. Overall, the course was interesting and information packed. Her grading was also pretty fair.
Great lectures!
SERIOUSLY, seriously... she seems like an alright human being however, unless you have a HUGE passion for crime in canada DO NOT take this class. She made us do several in class essays and expects you to "critically think", unless you're willing to work on this class harder than you're whole course, again, DO NOT take this class. Its not worth it!
Lower Liberal Courses are suppose to give me a break from my "real courses" but really, i find myself working harder for this course then any other course i have. i was contemplating whether to drop this and i didnt and oh boy, i wish i did. seriously, if you are dedicated in learning about crime and you enjoy it then go for it.
WOW, arn't electives suppose to boost your marks up? Ended up with C+, the lowest mark I've ever received in university; almost lost my co-op b/c of this course...exams are 1/2 written..full bs. I found myself working 3x harder in this course vs my core courses. She wants you to critically think so studying wont help;it's either u know it or dont.
Very hard marker and lectures were not organized
The worst class ever, the course is not interesting. She is really a hard prof. I worked more for this than the core courses. Although liberal courses should get your gpa up this one f***ed me up. Don't risk your life and avoid her and her course. She is the WORST...
Lectures could have been oranized, and concepts could have been explained more clear for the students.
hard prof. hard marker. i'm a 4th year student that needed to finish up a lower liberal. i worked harder in this damn class then my other 4th classes, and i ended up with a crap mark (D).
Good prof. Actually, one of the best ones at Rye. She's really helpful and she definitely has a passion for the feild. Mixes it up by keeping the course current and interesting. Gives massive hints in class regarding upcoming assignments, test, whatever. Read the text, go to class, and you'll be fine.
Very hard teacher. Makes her students feel stupid. In the first lecture the class was full, a month later, half the class withdrew the course. I dropped out before the midterms, and those that wrote the midterm, literally cried afterwards. You have to devote more study time to this course than you're program's courses!!!
Her courses are alot of work, so I probably wouldn't suggest them as a liberal. But if you are a criminal justice major/minor and you enjoy the material, then the work is worth it because you will be challenged and learn alot. Just try to think critically and make connections.
ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY> Her lectures are on tests and I think she actually radars whos in and who isnt. SHE HATES late people and even confronted someone for their phone ringing. YOU MUST have articles read before class and honestly if you do its good so you cna answer her questions and get good marks. TAs on the other hand are much more relaxed
You have to go to her classes, her lectures are hard, there is a lot of information and she is very cranky if you are late. She is a lot nicer outside of the classroom and she has to be helpful outside because she is all over the map with her lectures. She can be quite rude in class to students though and makes assumptions that she shouldn't.
Absolutely hated this course strictly because of her teaching style. Notes weren't clear, they were all over the place. I was often left confused about what we were talking about. In class work was useless. I think she expects too much from her students. Was left turned off from Criminal Justice.
I warn you, don't take her class unless you are both smart and clever. She is tough but good professor- you'll learn a lot but for the good mark pay attention to everything in the lecture
No structure in course, textbook is garbage, just full of number and stats, tells you theories and such, then they back them up with explanation, but at a later point it contradicts itself and says that theory is no good, you learn NOTHING useful, today she announced that the midterm is composed of 3 FORMAL essays, 20 m/c, and you only get 2 hrs...
She is horrible.
Lectures have no structure, she does not clarify anything. She knows her stuff but has no idea how to properly teach it so we understand it. Her class is mandatory, and she should not be the only one teaching it.
Too much work for a first-year course compared to the other professors who taught the same class. Very stubborn and biased in her teachings; will not like critical feedback from students. Makes you feel dumb too when you're wrong. Barely made it through with a B-
Had groupwork every wk. Gave us topic the day of. Had 1hour to write essay in groups of 3. Extremely picky with what she wanted. If specific points were not there, you were not getting any marks. Expectations were too high for essay that was to be written in 1 hr. Class avg was 1.62 out of 3! Worst prof I've had
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. Drop class ASAP
do yourself a favor, DONT TAKE THIS COURSE!She need to realize this is a libreal course, not a crim major course. Her notes arnt organized, and useless. This course will significantly bring your GPA down. AVOID THIS COURSE AT ALL TIME
Worst professor in the history of ryerson! She enjoys failing her students, hardly teaches any material in lectures, never uses the textbook. If you want to fail and bring your GPA down, join her class now! GOOD LUCK!
awful, way too much work for a first year course. made my dislike CRIM, and rethink my major until i had prof. KIATPIS. in class work out of 3 marks, tough exams, and HUGE project to do independently. do no recommend
Omg, she is "THE WORST". Too many work. 16 assignment you have to do. Seriously, if you can, PLEASE drop her.
I'm in 3rd year and she's the worst prof I've had so far. She is useless from all points of view, so boring she can make you cry, does not know her own material, repeats what is said in course readings over and over, is utterly incapable of answering questions and rude at times as well. Honestly, it can't get any worse than her course.
HANDSDOWN SHE IS ONE OF THE HARDEST PROF'S IN MY UNIVERSITY CAREER, HAS NO INCENTIVE TO PASS ANYONE, DISREGARDS ANYTHING ANYONE HAS TO SAY AND GOES WITH WHAT SHE FEELS IS RIGHT ALL THE TIME. CLASS AVERAGE ON MOST ASSIGNMENTS ARE BELOW 60%, 35% OF THE CLASS FAIL REGARDLESS OF HOW SMART YOU ARE. My suggestion avoid this class at all means necessary.
She sucks as a teacher, ur better off not taking it at all if u want ur gpa to stay up.
Instructor gave equivallent to 60 pages of written assignments. Every week has at least one paper due. Weekly journals are manditory as well, worth 20% of your final mark. Instructor gives little to no feedback, and feedback given is so delayed it is useless to even give it.
I have never disliked a class so much! the prof is extraordinarily condescending, it is her way or the highway. she shoots down EVERYTHING (expect 2-3 answers the WHOLE semester) as being wrong. Even going to office hours does not help. she marks more on the base of her thumb size "margins" then of the amount of effort/ quality in your work.
Yes, she is a hard marker. Yes, she expects you to work hard. But she is very smart and actually does want to help as long as you express interest and you appear to care about your work. I found her class very interesting and enjoyable, and her assignments were appropriate for the class and the level (first year).
OMG SHES SO MEAN!!!! I have a midterm on Wed 20 multiple choice and 3 essays no ones going to finish! shes so mean were frist year sudents! DONT TAKE HER AS A PROF DONT TAKE HER UNLESS YOU WANT A LOW LOW LOW AVERAGE easliy 40-50 percent will fail the class no joke
very very very very verrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyy hard.
has a very fixed view on what she believes to be rights and wrong. In order to get a good mark in the class you have to see things her way
Since this is my major, I didn't really have a say on when I wanted this class and with what prof, but all I gotta say is that she is a nice prof- nice person to chat too about the course and her lectures are all over the place, often confusing. Pretty hard and I stressed alot in this class... try not to take it but if u do have too.. WORK HARD.
I had her last year, In my third year at Ryerson for Ethics and although we had many assignments, the material was not that hard. If you absolutely have to take her class, don't go in thinking that u'll do poorly because I went in with a positive attitude and I actually got an A in her class
Very nice teacher even though she makes the exams hard. However, I learned alot and do not regret that I took the course.
i like the material she teaches but shes awful. shes rude and makes you feel like you are stupid. i've never felt so down on myself with any other prof. Ryerson crim teachers are awesome so its only fair that we have one that is god awful i guess
for the people who whine and think its hard, its cus they are lazy and really dont want sit and study. this class is heavy and full of assignments, but if you listen to Singh and see what she expects you can do well. its not about how she teaches its about how you want to learn. again it's a hard class cus its full of assignments, but easy to do we
Ok i'm a good student, i go to class i do my readings and i work hard. with singh, tht does not matter. don't listen to the people who are saying that if you do the work you are fine. with four or more other courses, along with a social life or work or wahtever else you are doing, she assigns way too much work. avoid her if you can
I got an A in her class. What a terrible prof. The hardest class I have ever had in my life and there was no actual exam like fml.
The final exam was multiple choice, short answer AND 4 essay questions, nuff said
If you like going to every lecture, taking detailed notes, & putting in time & effort for assignments, while getting ZERO credit for it, then this is the prof for you. Be prepared to do free work because you will put in blood, sweat, & tears & not get the grades for it. An A+ student can easily be a C student with this prof. THERE IS NO PLEASING HER
the way she marks is really frustrating, she expects really certain things and doesnt allow students to think for themselves. very hard to like. try to avoid.
She assigns way too much work. All her assignments for this one class outnumber my total number of assignments from other classes. For every class she teaches, students repeatedly give her low evaluations. How she remains teaching at Ryerson is beyond myself and others.
I think if you guys just attended her class and followed her instructions then you could have done good. honestly she is a good prof, she is really hard and there is too many assignments but at least she is fair. for those people that rated her low, only if you attended all her classed you could have done good. She is a good prof in my opinion.
I agree with the previous comment. Dr. Singh is one of the best professors in the Crim department. She is very knowledgeable, fair, and responsive. And I appreciate that she pushes students to do their best. I don't believe anybody should receive an A without first earning it; what you put in to the course corresponds with what you get out of it.
She is fair accurate and clear. If you attend classes and do the readings you will do well - guaranteed! She truly rewards hard work
WAY too many assignments. If you miss a class, she will remember and point it out in front of everyone when you go to class again. She has mini assignments that are either pass or fail. She assigns 2 sets journals that are each 10 pages single space! worth 10% each. her expectations are RIDICULOUSLY high. She has told students not to aim for an A !
I'm not afraid to say that she is the worst professor. Avoid her. She has unrealistic expectations, does not engage the class, and will dock marks without explaining why she did until after; very unfair. Students are not mind readers. I don't know how she returns after the numerous faculty surveys.
She is the absolute worst professor I have ever had, avoid her at ALL COSTS. Switch classes, take it over the summer. DO NOT ENROL IN HER CLASS. Not only is she cold, rude and have zero passion for teaching, she marks hard and has unrealistic expectations. Made me hate crim and never took it again.
Honestly, if you go to every class there is a slight chance you will do okay. However, she is rude! There is no pleasing her! She doesn't make things clear, and if the entire class doesn't understand something, she then proceeds to blame it on us instead of clarifying the content like most profs do! DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER!!!! AVOID!!!!!!!
The 3 hour lecture was excruciating to sit through, she has all the charisma of a withered shrub. Very condescending and rigid, and she assigned heaps of reading. I dropped the course as it was painfully dry and it was NOT AT ALL the intellectually stimulating experience I was expecting from university. DO NOT TAKE.
The worst prof I've ever had! She has a repulsive attitude toward students in her class. Always gave me a death stare when I entered her class because I was always 10 minutes late due to the fact that I had back to back lectures in different campuses. Way too much reading that she barely even went over. Ended up dropping the class.
THE WORST PROF EVER ! i was required to take this course otherwise i would have dropped it. She is rude to all the students and doesn't explain anything. If you have a question she will not answer but you will just end up regretting you asked. The exam was TOO hard and she marks so hard its impossible to do well. AVOID. SHE IS THE WORST.
i can honestly say this was the worst course ever not because of the material but the prof. She is not helpful and is simply rude. Im not afraid to say that she doesn't like teaching
Hard to review this professor without cussing. Shes rude (make you answer questions in class then when you answer just looks at you while asking why...), boring as all hell and unreasonably strict; gave me a 5% late penalty because i was 2 minutes late due to subway.. AVOID AVOID AVOID
I dont feel bad when i say this prof was the reason i did so bad in this course. Horrible way of teaching because she is so rude and unhelpful. The midterm was so difficult and the essay was worse. She does not give clear instructions and does not explain anything clearly
A very rude and strict teacher. She talks from the beginning to the end a very boring class. She marks really hard you will not get a good mark even if you try your best
I'm incredibly convinced the only good comments on here are those that she wrote herself. Nobody in the right mind would appreciate a professor like her. Rude, tough and unreasonable. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS.
She treats students as if they're in elementary school, berating and nagging when she knows students have not done OPTIONAL readings which are not included in the examinations. Way too politically correct, she lectures like a robot while monotonously droning about uninteresting material. On the other hand, the textbook was quite engaging.
Do not take this class unless you are willing to spend the vast majority of your time on it. Dr. Singh is an incredibly tough marker, and unless you are capable of retaining everything she says in the 3 hour lecture, it's pretty much impossible to do well. I felt like no matter how hard I tried, my work wouldn't satisfy her. Avoid.
Marks way too hard, bad teaching, bad everything
WORST EXAM EVER !she made it so difficult we had to write 4 essays and there was also multiple choice the other prof is a hundred times better. Dont take this course if you want to pass criminal justice.
Hardest 1st year class I've taken thus far. I passed the class but with extreme difficulty. She always prompted us to go to her office hours, if anyone needed help you just needed to get off ur butt and ask for it she always seemed willing. Dr. S is reasonable but very tough, tho you'll leave her class with a lot of knowledge even if u passd or not
im reallly sorry to be rude but this was the worst professor. Most students taking this class are first year students and thus she should understand that she needs to explain the course material clearly which she does not do. She is rude and not helpful. All examinations are difficult and even people that spend days studying did not do well.
Hard marker ! She does not teach at all and is simply rude but the worst part is she makes you read several chapters of the textbook but it does not have anything to do with her tests.
good luck, I somehow passed this but I guarantee you will be crying rivers. L0L, she is soo hard. Her teaching style of beyond unbelievable. Wishing to the best of luck to those who are going to taking CRM 100 as an elective with her. Did I mention 20 page essay? Yea expect it.
To be fair, she is knowledgable but she doesn't get that we're first year students. She shows no emotion, and I felt like she was too much of a professor, and not enough human - which set the atmosphere or "classroom climate" which she preached about but destructed herself. I'd avoid if at all possible. If you get her, make sure you read!
believes that asking questions within two weeks of exams and essay due dates is unfair to other students so she will not help. was told not to take her class but didn't listen. Only bad criminology professor in the program.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER ! Thats the best description for this professor.
The hardest i have ever worked in my life for a 70. Its not that her course is hard, its that its vague. She rambles and has expectations that aren't easy to fulfil. She' incredibly egotistical and turns down anyones answers to class questions to the point where you get scared of her. Its teachers like this that make me want to transfer schools.
She shows next to no emotion whatsoever and is very bland and boring. Avoid her at all costs.
I see a lot of bad comments posted about this professor. As a grad students she was AMAZING! Professor Singh is highly is knowledgeable in the field of criminology and is respected by her peers. These first year students are fools and cry babies. You have had your hand held for your whole life, grow up, open a book and do work.....
Her knowledge in this arena is amazing & she gives great feedback as well as goes out of her way to work with your schedule to meet on questions you have. Yes, you'll read a lot - welcome to University Life. You WILL work hard, but you'll feel SO good getting her stamp of approval in grades. You may not get an easy A, but you'll get KNOWLEDGE!!!
AVOID AT ALL COSTS, I REPEAT, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
DO NOT TAKE IF YOU LOVE YOURSELF AND YOUR LIFE AVOID !
God won't even save you. And you'll basically lose all your interest in CRM so please, if you love the major, do not pick her. Wait the courses out till a new prof teaches it.
Professor Singh is an excellent academic, mentor, and a gives credit where it is due. She is interesting, knowledgable, and demands respect. I would recommend taking her if you want to actually learn a thing or two. Her teaching CRM 100 is an insult to her intelligence. One of the best Criminology professors at Ryerson. Do not bring boiled eggs lol
I suggest to avoid her classes. she is an extremely tough marker and she expects way too much from students. her lectures are sometimes difficult to understand and unless you read you won't know what she is talking about and there are ALOT of readings. the midterm and final are take home but are no where close to easy
Yes she is a tough prof. Yes she gives a crap load of readings and if you want an easy A she is not the prof for you! Crim theories hardest class in my academic career PERIOD. She's a nice women will help you, so go to her office hours. You wont forget what you learned if you take her that's for sure! She tough but totally awesome low-key.
I found Professor Singh to be one of the most informed an informative professors I encountered in my 4 years at Ryerson. She is not an easy marker. She is not interested in winning any popularity contests, and therefore gets a bad rap. However, if you put effort into her course, you can learn more from her than many other CRM faculty members.
She may be tough, but she's brilliant. One of the most influential classes I've taken.
She's a great prof! Very knowledgeable and does her best to try to help students understand everything. One downside is she expects lots of specifics included in her essay questions on the midterm/exam. If you don't incorporate definitions you lose drastic marks. Slides are posted online but with very minimal information so you need to attend class
Extremely difficult marker. Gives very little direction for midterm and take home final exams. If you don't attend the class, she will for sure nitpick all of your writing. Do yourself a favour, and find another professor. Will definitely never take a class with her again.
very tough marker but so sweet and friendly, she really wants you to do your best and expects a lot from her students. if you do well in her class your marks in your other classes will rise. One of the only proffs that require critical thinking.
Get ready for a lot of reading. A majority of her lecture slides are based on the textbook so attendance isn't mandatory, she also includes articles and specific videos that you have to go over in your spare time on the midterm and exam. Overall quite monotonous and boring lectures but as long as you do the readings and study, passing is possible
Dr. Singh fully expects all the readings to be done before you get to her lectures, if you havent done the readings you wont be able to understand most of what she is talking about in class. She engages most students by relating the material to the real world. If you have any questions or problems she is very understanding and helpful.
She forces groups to come to her office hours so she can show her colleagues that people actually want to visit her... they wouldn't if she didn't make this mandatory. Worst prof of my undergraduate degree and possibly of all professors who've ever lived.
A 100 level course turned into 900 if it were a level. Boring lectures and unnecessarily tough. Professor not at all helpful or accommodating when you reach out. Do yourself a favor, and choose a different professor for the class you need!
Unfortunately this professor was extremely tough. Her exams and essay was tough considering it was a first year course. She is very smart but expects you to do a lot of independent work. My advise is when she says to start writing the essay ahead of time. Listen to her!
Prof Singh is a hard-lined prof, for sure. But if you are in school because you actually want to learn, she is awesome. My mark isn't incredible but I've learned a lot about criminal justice/injustice, and feel compelled to keep learning now. Also, I don't take the news at face value anymore bc of this class.
one of the worst professors i have ever had, and probably will ever have. this professor is not helpful to her students, and it seems as though she could care less if they pass or not. makes the assignments and exams unnecessarily difficult. i've tried to email her for help on several occasions and she was useless. avoid at all costs!
It's university. You've got to earn your marks. So yeah you gotta read and go to class. Singh is great - her class is interactive and she's always bringing in real time examples. I went to see her for help - she never let me down.
Professor Singh was a little more difficult than my other professors, but that does not take away from her clear ability to be a great professor. She demanded, which is expected of university students, an understanding for the content, rather than memorization. She is tougher, but do your work and do pay attention. The knowledge is valuable!
Prof sighn is not helpful to her students. she makes simple concepts sound complicated in her lectures. You can tell she is very knowledgeable proffessor but fails to deliver it to her students.
you can tell this prof is very knowledgeable, but for a first year course she was unnecessarily hard. the multiple choice for the midterm was brutal and most kids did very poorly. her power points that she puts online give little to no information so if you don't show up to class you will do poorly. although it was very hard, i learned a lot
Very knowledgeable prof however expects her students to be just as knowledgeable as her even though its a first year class. Participation matters, the more you speak up the more she likes you. Tough grader. Only 1 test, 1 essay and the final exam, so if you do poorly on one you're basically done. She has good intentions but makes the class hard.
This prof is a ridiculously hard marker. She does not provide clear instruction or clarification, yet is very particular about specifics to the assignment. I am normally an A student, but I am nearly failing this class. She does not seem to care about the success of her students. I will not be taking a class with this prof ever again.
Very helpful.
Singh is hard grader! But is very funny and explains very well. Learned a lot from her.
amazing women, has lots of knowledge on the subject and is passionate about it, posts all the slides online so you don't really have to go to class but she does give lots of exam hints if you do! average to hardish marker but if you understand the material you will do well,
Just horrible. Would not recommend.
Prof. Singh has a lot of knowledge in her field of Criminology. However, she is a very hard marker! I did all of her readings, attended class, and engaged in her activities, but I am hardly passing her class. Please avoid!
Very rude and condescending, assigns 65-85 pages of readings per week on average. Fair marker for written components but insanely strict on works cited, in a class of around 50 people only 2 didn't lose marks for their citations. Do not take one of her classes unless you have no other choice, there are many amazing profs at Ryerson to choose from.
She isn't helpful if you're having personal problems and isn't considerate. She expects you to know everything and can be quite rude sometimes.
Dropped this class when I had the chance. Normally love criminology classes especiall those surrounding topics of race and ethnicity. However, this prof was extremely boring, the the slides are very short so you NEED to attend class in order to have all the material and even with that the probability to doing good on her assignments are pretty slim
Frankly everyone who has given a rating simply has a low IQ and low attention span. I did half of the readings, attended about 3/4 of the lectures, skimmed the textbook and I did perfectly fine on my exams, midterms, essays. She's a great lecturer, but she's stern. She doesn't repeat herself and forces you to do the readings (they are interesting)
yall.... do not... take this teacher. She is rude as hell for no reason. I used to love crm but with this lady... helll nah. LET ME SAVE YOU!!! DO NOT!!!!!!!!!!
Dont take her, she gave me a 10% on an essay. Mind you I have 90's in my other classes. Shes extremely hard for no reason and is very unclear with her instructions. My entire class failed her essay.
Her lectures are very heavy but extremely interesting. Although she is very stern and a hard marker, she is well respected because of how knowledgeable she is about crim. A lot of people say she's mean but she was only ever super nice to my class and reachable by email. Hard class but learned a lot from it and came out with a pretty decent grade.
Course is lecture heavy and her instructions for assignments are not clear. Do not waste your money. Great course concept but the way she teaches the course is horrible. A lot of essays!!!
Tough and heavy lectures and hard marker. Talks really fast
Dr. Singh is a great professor in my opinion. This class in particular is kind of boring, teaches you very rudimentary structural aspects of policing, courts and corrections, but she does make it engaging. Definitely go to class as she puts questions from class discussions on tests. Shes super chill and easy to get along with.
midterm was incredibly difficult even though I studied for it for weeks. When I spoke to the prof about it she said that because I'm a communications major I don't know how to "think critically" and that's why the midterm was hard for me. She told me not to pursue further education because I'm not smart enough for it. I'm a straight-A student btw.
lectures are detailed but interesting. she provides critical thoughts and conclusions regarding the content reviewed in her classes. honestly did not read a lot before each class and she always managed to summarize the main points from her readings. really cares about her students and what she is teaching. very accommodating when with good reason.
Worst professor ever. Super lecture heavy. I cannot last for 3 hrs. The lectures are so boring and condnensed into less than 10 slides, making it impossible to know what to write down. Fell asleep in class multiple times due to the boredom of the class.
the WORST prof ever. She doesnt care about students and all the slides she puts up are 3 words. Her assignments are difficult and she makes students teach themselves theories and write about them? what kind of assignment is that? even during Zoom classes she turns off comments and doesn't let students interact with each other. AVOID TAKING HER
DON'T TAKE HER. she's so rude and stuck up and likes to make students suffer. She makes easy concepts hard. The worst thing about her is she doesn't even let students interact with one another or build connections. So messed up during the pandemic. Also VERY HARD MARKER
Worst professor I have ever had. Makes lectures way too long, does not teach, and just reads lines from chapters. She gets angry when students ask her questions or question something in an assignment. DO NOT TAKE HER
She is knowledgeable but it doesnt seem like she likes teaching. Doesnt upload powerpoints and lectures are boring. Youre also required to submit assignments about theories before you learn about them in class, pretty much setting you up to do poorly. She doesnt accept late assignments and gave a group project during the pandemic. Avoid!!!!
She thought of the worst possible assignments and lecture style to teach during a global pandemic. This is not an issue with the criminology department but rather an issue with this prof. So I am suppose to write about a theory without any useful guidance from the prof? Seem like a GREAT environment to nurture interest and knowledge for criminology
This professor has been the least accomodating in my whole time at Ryerson. She would not allow students to talk to each other outside or inside of lecture time which makes things incredibly hard in an online format. For assignments, you must teach yourself the content to be graded harshly before having been taught the subject matter in lecture.
She makes you teach yourself a theory, write an assignment on the theory, and submit the assignment before teaching it to the class (3 times), this comprises 85% of your mark No final exam so almost no point in learning any content besides the one you do your assignment on
She's not a terrible person, however she is a hard marker and the class is not interesting or fun. The lectures are long and hard to follow because they aren't interesting. Taking notes is hard because she just talks, with no clear concepts and definitions on lecture slides. Marks VERY hard. Sadly wouldn't recommend, but I do think she is kind.
Don't take her class.
Easily the worst prof I have ever had. Gives extremely vague requirements for assignments and doesn't give helpful responses to clarifying questions from students. Lectures are long rambles, I have learned nothing from this class. Won't let students talk to each other or record lectures during online school, and takes weeks to return simple things.
Is dismissive of students concerns. Assigns 70+ pages of readings to be completed weekly, but hardly discusses lecture or reading material. Tough marker and doesn't provide feedback. Barely explains assignments; gets easily triggered if too many questions are asked. Disappointed as this could have been a super interesting class if done differently.
Ryerson needs to consider reviewing this prof. She gives extremely unclear instructions and only clarifies expectations after submission. DO NOT TAKE HER
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Imagine trying to learn concepts when the prof is talking for two and a half hours (un-recorded) with supporting slides that share little to no detail on said concepts. I cannot believe that in a class titled "Race, Ethnicity, and Justice" that the professor refuses to accommodate students in different time zones (or working).
Awful class. Awful prof. 85% of your grade is based on essays from self-taught material from a textbook. No lecture for it. Harsh grader. Can't ask her questions. I hate this class so much please DO NOT take! I am a 4th year Crim student, and I would give her a -10 rating. Please y'all, take any class but this one. It will ruin your GPA. Dropping
She makes you teach yourself the content, she only teaches after you have already submitted the assignment. Her feedback is not constructive, just judgmental; if you make a mistake she does not explain how to correct it, only aims to point out that you were wrong. Is strict with deadlines (no extensions) but is slow at marking. I hope she changes.
PLEASE just take another CRM course.
Second time having her as a prof. If possible avoid her at all costs, save your mental health Papers applying theory to real world were due before the theory was taught in class (all graded assignments were self taught making lectures pointless). Hard grader, no assignment sheets, condescending /stubborn when talking to students, bad lectures, etc.
I literally dropped it because it is almost impossible to do well in this class, mind you, I have a 4.33 gpa
Avoid at all costs. Complete waste of time and money, as the learning objectives and material of the professor's choice, are in a complete disalignment. If this is any indication, 26% of my class failed an assignment worth 30%. Have fun.
This is without a doubt the worst class I have taken in the four years of my undergrad. I am a straight A criminology student and I am struggling to do well in this class. I agree with all of the other reviews on here. All of the papers are based on theories that we have to teach ourselves, and the assignment instructions are extremely vague.
Nice lady but easily one of the worst classes I've taken at Ryerson. She makes you teach yourself the course material and then after you have written an assignment on it decides to explain it to you. This makes you realize that you have done the assignment wrong because there are also no clear instructions to begin with. Don't waste your time.
very nice lady (or so it seems), but the grading is horrible, and the lectures were horrible. I have not learned one thing in this course, except that her and the TA have polar opposite marking schemes. Do not take her if you have a choice.
I think my fellow reviewers may be a bit TOO critical about prof Singh. Her classes are by no means an easy A, but a good grade is attainable as long as you do the readings, attend lecture, and active good notes for both. Her lectures can be a bit dry, and she may come across as hostile but she is honestly just a bit stricter than your average prof
Literally do NOT take this class if you can help it. It is impossible to please her with the critical reflection papers because she is both extremely picky and extremely vague with her expectations. What I will say for her is that she marks the group project pretty nicely and it was a fun project to do. Other than that, avoid her at all costs.
lectures are VERY boring. no tutorials - makes it difficult to grasp concepts at times. marks m/c exams on an 'objective' scale which doesn't really make sense to me.
Save urself and avoid her. She gets angry when u ask questions and assigns SOO many readings (once 50 pages in a week). Her lectures are boring (live, not pre-recorded). She speeds past concepts and doesn't give u much time to take notes. If u have her, try to take detailed lecture notes because a lot of the mid-term is on her lectures.
Honestly, the only reason why I didn't rate her a 1, is because I'm doing well in the class. Overall this class was a solid 2/10 experience.
Dropped her within the first week of the semester. Didnt have to stay there long to realize how she Intentionally tries to make everything as hard as possible. I know its university and all my other profs arent easy but its like she intentionally tries to make life difficult. Way too many readings, hates when you ask questions. Avoid!
I learnt more in this class than my 4 other classes combined. The readings were engaging and she wasnt actually THAT bad, I just think some people are dramatic. From the lectures you can tell this lady is sweet but strict . If you found the the topics boring maybe a major change is in your future, because all the topics taught were interesting
Save yourself the headache and try your luck with another course. Zoom chat was disabled and communication limited between students. She doesnt answer any emails or questions in class and gets visibly agitated at them. Her lectures were hardly even lectures. Sometimes the librarian was there other times it was a lady talking about consent. Avoid.
This Professor got very upset when students asked questions, like visibly upset. Her grading criteria were not absurdly hard, but our final assignment was so disorganized and difficult for no reason. Some students were given easy topics, while other students had almost 0 research to write their assignments on. Lectures were mostly useless.
If you go to class each week, actively participate in her seminar but give an opinion she wants to hear then you're good. If you participate and give an opinion she doesn't like well then you're not soo good. They ask you not to say whether or not profs are biased but this teacher is the definition of bias. Trust me when I say do not take her class
This professor takes a level 200 class absurdly seriously. She makes a name for herself out of grading things extremely difficult, being totally unforgiving and unreachable outside of class. If you have this professor, drop immediately. There are other Crim professors at TMU that will have a lasting impact on you; in a POSITIVE way.
I think Professor Singh is really not as bad as people say. After spending a whole semester taking her class, as long as you attend your lectures (which you should be doing when you can) and do the readings and really listen to what she says, you're good. She's also quite nice if you just actually try.
She tries to make her classes as difficult as possible. She gives little to no explanations on assignments and doesn't make things clear when you reach out to her. I understand university is not supposed to be easy but she does not make the students lives easier on purpose.
Anne Marie-Singh seems like a genuinely decent person, but as a professor she was a nightmare. She always speaks to students with little respect, as if she thinks she's better than you. She treats inaccuracy as shameful and is very difficult to communicate with outside of class. When asked for help, she was unsupportive and cold. Don't recommend.
I ended up dropping this class after the third week, and I am so glad that I did. I was really ready to give this class my all, but to have a professor so inaccessible outside of class, especially after nearly three years of online learning is absurd. Wouldn't recommend if you are looking to maintain a certain GPA.
lectures are mandatory. if you miss one, you are in trouble. very tough grader, only 2 exams and a paper. if you pay attention you can do well. very rude prof, never replies to emails. quick marker. she is biased and only her opinion is allowed. boring lectures and lots of readings.
WORST prof at Toronto Metropolitan university, AVOID at all costs.
For a first-year course, you would think the prof would not be a complete nightmare. She intentionally will try to make your life difficult and refuses to answer questions outside of class. She is very difficult to deal with. I dropped her and saved myself from any further pain. I took the same course with professor Kolia who was a delight.
It's an intro class so it's already kinda boring but she makes it even worse. Shes mean and cold and won't even answer questions just acts annoyed.
I was put in Singh's class during covid, I completed the first class online and immediately myself and my family who was listening said "no switch". she was not accommodating did not allow students to ask questions or talk to each other, she was very close-minded for a crim professor. I dropped. majority who have had her have failed their courses
Bad Professor. Horrible Assignments that make no sense for the discipline of Criminology, made us do geographical and archival research on a topic she had not researched to ensure that there was information to be found. Disrespectful to students when asking questions or answering them. Please avoid.
By far the worst professor and class ever. She is extremely unaccommodating, condescending and difficult for no reason. Assignment guidelines were unclear, feedback was minimal. As someone who has been in over 40 undergrad classes with 40 different professors, she is by far the worst I've experienced. Avoid at all costs!!!
I had Dr. Singh twice in my last year at TMU, and although she is definitely one of the toughest and more harsh professors I've ever had- she warmed up to me a lot. She doesn't give clear instructions for assignments but will answer any questions if you seek out her help. I did the insane amount of readings, did the work and finished with an A+.
she sucksss! Lecture heavy, make sure to bring a pillow and a blanket. Took this class in my first year and it was the most painful intro to university I could have. Would not recommend this class to anyone nor this prof either. Content is boring and the rare content that IS interesting, she makes it boring.
Just coming here to bring her average rating even lower. I took her for one week in the fall 2021 semester and she was a complete nightmare. DROP HER if you currently have her and do NOT take her if you are considering her course. Makes everything a challenge, rude, i think she hates her students. Protect your mental health and DO not take her.
The assignments in this class are made so difficult for no reason, and she marks hard. She also does not respond to emails, and it's hard to ask her questions, as the vibe she gives out after asking questions in class is horrible. I recommend DO NOT taking her class. I tried to give her a chance, but honestly, I wish I had taken a different class.
Avoid this class if possible - the professor makes assignments needlessly difficult and is not very responsive to student needs. But unstuckstudy can help with study prep.
DO NOT TAKE HER AS A PROF! She does not explain ANYTHING AT ALL. You can't even email her questions because she wouldn't even respond, and if she does respond, she will shut your question down real fast by saying "read the course syllabus." Makes you do A LOT of group work. Literally, all of this course's evaluations were based on group work.
AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS! The whole course is group work although its individually marked it's done in a group. If you have any questions, don't even bother emailing her as she will just tell you to look at the syllabus (which doesn't help). She is not willing to answer questions and will dismiss them very quickly (even during/after lectures).
Save yourself; don't take this prof. The assignments are extremely unclear, and the instructions are NOT made well whatsoever. Her marking is very specific as well, and she honestly has a horrible attitude. defenitley avoid.
I didn't listen to the other ratings on here and decided to take the class anyway. Let me say: huge mistake. Assignments are unclear but don't bother asking for clarification. Assignment limitations are also a major issue. She marks very hard, you have to attend or risk missing assignments, insane amount of readings. Avoid if you can!
Huge mistake! listen to the reviews and save yourself a whole lot of trouble. Slides are basically empty therefore you MUST attend class for notes and information. Readings are long and crucial. Lots & Lots of silly assignments (15%, 20%) but take so much time and effort. Not worth it. Professor overall stuck up and rude.
Full 3 hours lectures with graded group work. Long & mandatory readings, lectures, group work assignments. When you have a different opinion or a question she's very harsh. Hard grader. Many Assignments. Overall Wouldn't personally take again.
Makes you read 4-5 readings each week. Gives zero clarification when assigning assignment's. Grading makes zero sense. You will lose marks if you do not attend class because she assign's group work, but does not say when she assigns them. Assignments do not relate to lectures at all, it feels like I am learning nothing. Genuinely the worst prof.
Refrain from taking her. You will feel miserable. Your average will drop significantly. Very rude prof her group work is 10%. and none of it truly aligns with the course materials. She assigns the randomest questions and you will lose points if you make a small mistake. I feel like she hates her students.
Never in my life have I ever felt the need to write about a prof but holy cow this lady is wack. She called out a kid for eating in class, she used the same 7 page slideshow for two weeks in a row, and don't get me started on her annoying voice! there's no midterm or final; instead a 4 part CELT assignment (she does not give clear examples for)
do yourself a huge favour and listen to the reviews. this is your sign to take a different course. Professor is rude, not helpful, & stuck up. worst class ive ever taken. so much group work, no tests, so many assignments that take up so much time and are like 15%. must attend class for graded group work almost every week. its crazy dont do it
She used the same slideshow for most of the semester. Her lectures were very boring but very heavy. She does group work for 10% and the feedback she gives is horrible. If you miss class you will miss the group work. The way she made the entire CELT assignment and group work didn't really make sense to me. She assigns you a topic.
By far the worst class I've had these entire two years. The most unaccommodating prof ever. Her lectures consisted of the same material and she posted way too many readings. Even though this was a university class it was honestly really difficult to keep up with the material. The assignments were not clear, and lots of group work.
This was the worst course I've taken in my entire four years of studying criminology. She provided no feedback on assignments, and showed no concern for how students were doing. She raised her voice in class. Communication was poor, and she gave very low grades. I would strongly advise avoiding her unless you want your gpa lowered without cause!
I didn't learn anything from this class and she doesn't care about you, she gives you low grades as if she explained perfectly the worst class I've taken in my year in criminology, she must learn to be a teacher and give clear indications
Incredibly difficult grader with somewhat unclear assignment guidlines, I would not take her unless you are very academic. Hardest class I've ever taken before.
She was openly condescending to the graduate program on our first day, and does not provide clear expectations for assignments and grades on a whim. She lacks interpersonal skills, creates a hostile learning environment, and makes students feel unwelcome in the program. Unfortunately, she teaches a mandatory course and is tenured.
Emails after exams to get editors access on my paper, so she can see edit history, gets mad I don't respond since the semester ended. Fails a students paper for coming to class late (1 minute after she showed class late herself). IS AN ABSOLUTE PEDANT, if you cannot guess her favourite colour in hexadecimal code your grade WILL disappear. 0/5
One of the most difficult professors I've had at TMU. The teaching style feels self-centred and unsupportive, with little openness to differing perspectives. Success depends on aligning with her personal views, leaving little room for critical thinking or genuine academic discussion. Please do not take her course!!!

While the course material itself was interesting, professor Singh made the lectures difficult to engage with, and the assignments were often unclear. The teaching style felt inflexible, which made it harder to enjoy the course overall. I believe I would have had a much better experience with a different prof.
