teacher good to look at, but doesnt teach a darn thing, is hard marker too
class requires thinking...teacher communicates exactly what is expected
No Comments
hot teacher, but is pretty useless.
Anne is great, I think she really makes you think about what the hell it is you are writing about. She isn't easy, but she makes the class fun and go quickly, especially because she always teaches the 4 and a half hour class!
For those of you questioning her teaching abilities... a pox on you! Not only is easy on the eyes, she is a marvelous teacher who KNOWS how to guide discussions and help her students.
she is hard, not fun to take... take other sections.. u are better off
Great teacher. You have to put a good effort in, but if you pay attention to discussions, the essays are easy. She's great at evoking critical analyses.
She is easy on the eyes, but she's not at all ditzy in her lectures. She will make you think and know what you are truly writing about. I would recommend her if you are pretty much self-sufficient, but need little pointers along the way.
She grades too hard and the class discussions are very helpful. I thought it would be an easy class since I've always gotten A's in my previous English classes... but NOOOOOO, not this one. She grades too hard on the essays and there aren't much points that you can get in the class...
She's a smart lady, pretty as well. Talks about her kids a whole lot. Keep up with the reading and you'll be fine, grading is fairly tough but not all that bad but i don't recommend taking her.
avoid that **** at all costs. there are tons of other better teachers. you can get an easy A with other teachers, or do you want to go to a cal state, just because her grading method is degrading your true skills.
She was a great instructor. She is genuinely well organized and very intelligent. Not to mention, she is pretty. She assigns a few papers and the final is a very short 10 question final. I recommend her. She is great.
shes coo! you are able to rewrite any essays you are not satisfied with. essays are pretty essay w/interesting topics! shes hot too for a mom with two kids.
She is not easy and you WILL have to put in work, but every single class of hers has been interesting (and as it goes on for 5h, that says a lot). You'll get better and better at writing essays, and provoked to think. I'd definitely take her again.
The five hours in the class goes by very quickly when you're in her class. She's loud so it'll keep you awake at 7:45am. Every two weeks you'll turn in an essay, but this class is basically about discussion which is very interesting. I would take her again if I had the chance.
Don't believe the other posts saying that she is so nice and blah blah blah. She would for some reason always pick on my essays and give me poor grades when i would try so hard and the rest of the class would all get As. I ended up getting a B for some crazy reason after I had never gotten a grade higher than a C on any essay...
It's a once a week class, but even though it's 5 hours long, she's a really good teacher. She keeps the class interested throughout the period. You learn a lot. She'll push you to write your best and even improve. This is not an easy A class, so be prepared. Ohh it would be a plus if you love to write. Btw, she's cute =D.
If you love to write, you'll like this class. She makes you write more than other 1B professors. Very easy final exam but the rest of the class is fast paced. Expect very late thursday nights if you don't keep up with the reading and the 4 essays + 1 research paper. Talks about her kids and UC Berkeley alot.
Excellent teacher... English is the third proficient language for me. and 1a was the first college level english class that i took. but i still managed to get an A. Yoy do have to write so many essays. In our class i think it was 6 essays and a research paper. Afterall, it is a writing class. Class goes pretty fast for a 5 hours class..Have to read
Her personality is like a blowhorn and three shots of espresso. Which is what you'll need for a 5 hour class at 7:45 a.m. that meets only on Fridays. She's critical, shrewd, opinionated and challenging. But you'll learn to argue and write. And her class is VERY interesting.
I totally procrastinated on every essay in this class. I still managed to pull an A. She's an awesome teacher. She's the reason why I can write a lot better than I used to. She's awesome to talk to after class. She's helpful and clear. She knows how to teach English class very well. I took her for two quarters. But you better know how to write.
Class is 5 hrs and once/week but she makes it very interesting. No pop quizzes, no tests, just an essay about every other week and a final research essay. Goes in-depth with each novel so that you are prepared for the essay. Likes to do group work to get ideas flowing and have class discussions. I would definitely take her class again.
Read the books, and go to class. If you aren't a very strong writer, I wouldn't suggest this class. She is really nice to students who need help, but that will only get you so far. If you want a class without a lot of fat and you're a good writer, go for it. I enjoyed the class the longer I was in it, so stick out the first few weeks.
do not take this class if you're not a very good writer. you will definately have a hard time with the essays cuz she grades hard. if you're an excellent writer, go ahead and take her class.
Very nice teacher. Personable and smart. No nonsense class, you need to know how to write before you take her class. you either read a book or write an essay each week. the writing textbook she assigns is pretty useless and she had us read only a little bit out of it.
Funny and smart teacher, loved her. She obviously cares a lot about what she's teaching and tries to engage the class in discussion. We read four books and wrote an essay for each, plus a final research paper at the end.
INCREDIBLE english teacher, if you want to improve your writing definitely take this class. Coming into this class, I was already a strong writer, but she is one of the few teachers who will take the time to write paragraphs of feedback and critique on your essays. She does tend to grade hard, but she specifies what exactly you need to improve on
Funny and smart teacher, loved her but she hard grading on essay. 4 books, 4 essays, 1 research paper, 12 journals and silly 5 min final.. take her.. you will learn a lot..
She's not THAT super hard. I got an A, but I took nearly one entire day to type each one up! The great thing though is that she's so specific about what she wants..and the final is a complete joke! Take her!
AMAZING class. took her 5 hour friday class, she is probably the only professor that can make a 5 hour class go by so quickly. She's very energetic and she draws everyone into class discussions on the reading. take her if you want to actually think beyond the box, and improve your writing, she definitely helps you to improving your essays.
waldsmith really knows her stuff. shes young, vivacious and full of energy! the only part that was difficult was of course the essays. i have never written so much in my life.but i definitely learned a lot from her. Devote time to doing your essays a week in advance because doing an essay last minute honestly is a killer!
Love her
This class was fun, annoying, and kind of a joke. English 1A is supposed to be so hard and it's not at all. You just have to do the reading and spit out a BS essay every 2 weeks and you'll probably get a B. She said we would learn how to write well but I think I write exactly the same as before the course. Take her, but don't expect to learn much.
SUPER EASY! Great teacher! Write your essays and you will get an A.
Do not take her class if you're international student. Really hard to understsand what she says. Don't expect to learn about writing skills. you already need to good about it for A. She helps to think critically but that doesn't mean you can write critically. 5pg esssay every 2 weeks, 2~3 of 1 pg journal every 2 weeks. Always turns essay back late.
BEST TEACHER i've ever had. she helps you learn how to write better. she has alot of insight, and she knows what shes teaching. if you want a real teacher that actually cares. take her and i guarantee you'll want to take her other classes
I do not recommend taking her. She will make you feel stupid in front of the class if she doesn't agree with your logic. Shes a very hard grader who provides little to no advice on how to become a better writer. Worst of all, it seems like she picks favorites.
I enjoy her incredibly. The topics we write about are some things that i already felt passionately about. I like that she isn't your typical namby pamby lit teacher. Honestly she doesn't go over "how to write well" it's more of a logic and philosophy class. I know that sounds bad but i enjoyed the class a lot.
Hands down my favorite class! For starters, she's incredibly easy on the eyes (meaning she's pretty) and is really easy to talk to. You can only get better; that's what she preaches, therfore there's only room to learn and improve if you havn't. Class discussions are extremely relevant and you learn alot! Take her!
She is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. Yes, she is pretty straightforward in class but, I did not learn ANYTHING from her. All she does in class is talk about political issues - she dosen't try to help improve your writing in any way. Also, she is very unsympathetic. I was sick for a class and she would not accept my late essay.
I don't wear my seatbelt driving to school because I want to die before I make it to this class.
Makes a 5 hour class enjoyable. Talks about stuff that actually open's your eyes and will help you in the real world. Yes, she may be a little pushy but it's only to try to open up the students minds because no one speaks in class. There is an essay every other week, doesn't grade too hard.
A class I looked forward to attending for 5 hours. Thats saying something. A strong minded teacher that won't accept wishywashiness.. her forward approach to teaching is both entertaining/ refreshing, may offend those without a sense of humor. Learned alot, material was always challenging/of intrest. Grades very fairly, stay on top of the work.
Cute prof. with nice style. She is understanding and she wants all students to pass. I found her to be beyond kind and generous. Class was entertaining. Two hour class periods would knock me out -and they still do- so I expected the period to be hell. But those 4.5 hour classes were a flash. One flaw- she isn't always willing to listen to opinion.
I had her for a 5 hour morning class and she made that class fly by. The class is made up of about a quarter of her lecturing and 3 quarters of a class discussion. It's a really friendly environment. Highly recommended.
She is a great teacher. She was always clear of what she wanted from us. Used class time for discussion and interesting activities. We usually got out early. Has really helpfully techniques for editing papers. She expects a lot from you essays, but you will learn a lot. An overall great, funny teacher.
She is an amazing woman with the best approach to teaching in a way that helps us APPLY what we talk about in our writing. For the people who say she's hard or makes you look "stupid" its not true. She just asks you questions after your statement to make sure you know how to back your statements up with logic. She does more discussion than lecture
very helpful
Awesome teacher and super helpful!
She's funny I'll give her that. She explains things very well and I like the class discussion aspect rather than simply a lecture. she makes 5 hrs go by fast and gives you two breaks which is nice so you're not sitting the whole time. The one negative thing is that she won't value your opinion unless you support it with reason. Love her essayTopics
Professor Waldsmith is by far an amazing teacher. She guides you through the writing process and helps you evolve into a great writer.
Anne is an amazing teacher who truly cares about what she does, and wants her students to become better readers and writers. If you want stronger writing skills take her class, but actually listen to her and do the work. Participate in class and don't fall behind. She's funny and relatable, I wish I took her sooner!
Turn in everything and you will pass. Essays are graded for: CONTENT, GRAMMAR, ORGANIZATION. You just need: A clear thesis, support that argument with online sources, and explain the connection between the source and your thesis. Class gets progressively easier. Essays are 5 page minimum which will seem like nothing with her INTERESTING PROMPTS.
Ms. Waldsmith was a very straight forward professor. Make sure you go to class and participate, because it will help you with essays. There is about 5 essays, and as a class you discuss it so much by the end of the lectures and some readings from the textbook you feel prepared to write the essays. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE ON THE ESSAYS!
Professor Waldsmith was a good teacher. Was just a little harsh on grading? Don't miss class because she goes over the prompt for the essays and journals. Interesting essay topics but the people in the class weren't as engaged which made the class a little boring. She also has a nice sense of style.
her class is very difficult for an ESL student. Though I finished my ESL 5 with an A+, I received a D from my first essay in her class. I killed myself for the second essay and I just got a B. I go and ask her how can I make my essay better and she really has no idea how to guide me. she just says, your essay is not enough for an A.
Funny professor who shows passion for teaching. Great and clear lectures. Do good on essays and you're good.
very rushed class and she is a very tough grader, understandable why she won't be teaching here next quarter
Lots of essays. Good at teaching material, can be confusing to communicate with sometimes and difficult to personally relate to. Accomodates disabled students well and is witty and engaging. Poor attendance will hurt your grade.
Eh the number of essays required are the same for every ewrt 1a class. Id says shes an okay teacher not the best but certainly not the worse. However, she never stopped the sjw girl from ranting all throughout the quarter. It made the class thoroughly difficult to sit through for 2 hours plus.
Great teacher, acts like a friend and gives great feedback. Easy to pass class all you have to do is stay up to date and participate and you will definitely pass her class.
She understood me when no one else did
I love Professor Waldsmith! She made EWRT 1 really enjoyable for me and her class was always interesting and ended early. We had a lot of papers to write but that was it (rarely ever any hw or classwork.) Her class very easy if you know how to write MLA essays. She isn't a tough grader and is very nice.
Her expectations for the essays are on the high side, but she makes them very clear and is always willing to help. I found the essay topics really interesting so writing didn't feel too demanding. Her lectures are very lively and she is super animated so you definitely won't get bored in her class. Just make sure you follow the rubric.
I thoroughly enjoyed taking Professor Waldsmith's class. Although there is a good amount of writing to do, her lectures and the topics covered were very interesting, and allowed for me to reflect on my own beliefs and values. While she has expectations for essay content, she is open-minded on students using personal styles of writing in their work.
Get your work in! 5 papers (ea 5 pgs) + 10ish 1pg informal writings. Her grading is quite fair. Just make sure you attend and pay attention to her lectures where she tells you how to logically frame your argument. Minus was the obnoxious contrarian guy who she allowed to go on inane disruptive rants. It's a writing class so do the writing!
A lot of easy 5 page essays which can be aced if you have a general knowledge of essay structure. All she makes you write about are various aspects of American Society which become boring extremely fast. They're easy topics to do well on, but become more akin to tedious busy work than actual projects that assist your ability to analyze and write.
Has a ridiculous point system of 12 points for each essay and one point for informal writings. Each point docked off your essay could potentially mean a whole letter grade. She is kind of a picky grader who nitpicks at little things. Lectures a lot.
Professor Waldsmith isn't super anal about the minor details. Gives you plenty of opportunities to ask questions and refine your work without getting graded too harshly. Very fair grading. Not very clear on syllabus grading but it doesn't matter. Show up and do the work and you'll get an A.
very enthusiastic and smart, always encourages students to speak up. The research paper isn't rly a research paper, just a literary analysis. Grading criteria based more on structure than content, i submitted some essays i thought were subpar but 100% bc i had a clear thesis, body paragraphs and conclusion. cant say i learned much about writing tho
I took Professor Waldsmith for english 1B and thought her grading was ridiculous. She has a ridiculous 12 point system for essays which means even a few points off results in a letter grade cut off. She tends to blabber in class about her personal life and doesn't give decent feedback at all. Super unreasonable and hard to work with.
Don't be fooled by these other reviews. She will not give a clear grading criteria at all and you feel like you are left in the dark. Essay's are impossible to succeed at and gives minimal feedback. Acts like she doesn't care at all in class and doesn't have a good teaching method.
Had her in 2019 when she subbed for my EWRT1 class. She is so enthusiastic and really gets straight to business. Shes so funny and energetic. Her energy really did make my mornings when I had her. I loved the way she taught. Just be prepared to write solid essays for her
Take her class if you want to ruin your GPA. Worst instructor ever.
She got essays on essays for days. My advice is to bs the credit for 250 words assignments cause you have to pick those same topics for the nitpicky 12 point graded essays. For that follow her specific criteria & the basic 5 paragraph essay criteria. WARNING She uses Turnitin so cite sources & write the rest from your mind. good luck stranger
LOTS OF PAPERS!! She basically assigns a 5-to 7 pages once per week and they usually all follow the same theme so it gets repetitive very fast. Would not recommend this class to people who are not good at writing papers in general; not exactly nitpicky with grading, but I'd be careful due to the workload. Overall, extremely boring.
Very incompatible for students with little time on their hands. She is in no way lenient with due dates despite assigning up to 3 assignments per weekend. I would strongly warn anyone who takes her class to not have any other classes that demand attention or work. Would not recommend.
A lot of writing demanded. However, she genuinely want to help your writing better if you let her. She always comments on your writings and be happy to help you fix your mistakes to be better in your next writing!
Great teacher, but her class is challenging. She's tough because she cares about the material. Once she knows you, she's very accommodating to your needs as a learner. Don't blame her if you aren't ready to put in effort. My advice: Do the extra credit. Take notes on EVERYTHING. Work with her during office hours (this helps a lot for essays).
Do not take this class! There are too many writing assignments on the same topic. She has a terrible grading system, and she never gives positive feedback. This class is the most stressful class I have ever taken. If you are a full-time student, I highly recommend taking this class with a different professor.
I'm a full-time student with a part-time job. I haven't been in school for 14 years, and I had zero idea how to write an essay before taking this class. This was a class that required LART homework as well. But that was pretty easy and could be used to write your essay. A passionate, engaging instructor who wants everyone to succeed
Clear and amazing lecture.
Professor Waldsmith was super friendly and kind. Lectures were fun and interesting and all connected directly to the work that she assigned. It is a college-level English class so it isn't always easy an she does get pretty picky when it comes to grading but overall shes great.
At times she may have been slightly passive aggressive. Generally a nice person. Had to put the work in to get a good outcome.
her class was really easy if you know how to write well prior. she is heavy on attendance and if you miss her classes, your grade will be heavily affected no matter how good you are in her class.
Her assignments are not always clear . she is very energetic and explains halfway through which sometimes makes it extremely hard to grasp her concepts. very passive aggressive . she WILL COLD call you. she has accused me of using A.I with papers ive written myself . can be a bit frustrating . lectures gets boring
