The BEST class I have ever taken! With the right effort put in you'll 100% love this class and learn so much (even if you've never taken chemistry before). She goes out of her way to help you & makes sure you understand. Her lectures are brilliant and it helps that shes's funny/sarcastic! If you struggle a bit this is the class for you. INSPIRING!
I love Anne! Her lectures are straightforward and clear. If you just pay attention in class and do the homework you should pass with a B with little-to-no effort. Quizzes are from the practice problems we do in class, we always go over lab calculations in class, she holds study sessions before every test. She is SO helpful! Would take her again.
She doesn't make chemistry interesting very boring LONG lectures. Four tests, a lot of quizzes in lab, and expect a lot of homework out of the book. She gets upset when you ask her for extra help once she has gone over the material I get shy to raise my hand so I asked her for help after and instead of helping me I felt scolded not approachable.
I was deathly afraid of having to take a physical science class but this wasn't bad at all, especially thanks to Anne. She is very straight forward and will tell you exactly what you need to know, you just need to fulfill your end of the deal and study/complete the very minimal homework! No tricks-Just do the work assigned. Read the book, take notes
If you are having trouble understanding the material Anne is always there to help you. Lectures are well made, use them to study from for quizzes. She is a hard grader, but she is not unfair. Ask questions and block out at least 5 hours a week to review lectures, do the homework, and complete the labs. Her class is easy if you put in the effort.
do not take... worst decision of my life. I ended up dropping even though I'm hella smart. Don't take Anne! I am saving you!
Anne is a great teacher & one of my favorites at this college. She's willing to answer any question no matter how dumb it may be and has a genuine interest in seeing students improve. Be warned though, not many people get an A in her Chem-120 class. I'd say around 5 did this semester.
Anne is a very good professor, the test are really hard but final is easy if you average a C's and B's on the test and did labs and got an A on the easy final then you should get an A. The test are so hard that she post last semesters test on canvas.
Anne is the sweetest teacher ever. She goes over problems in class for practice and is very enthusiastic about chemistry. She provides all the necessary materials to receive an A. She is extremely organized and helpful with questions about the class. Sometimes she gets irritated if people don't listen to the instructions and ask dumb questions.
Excellent lectures, simplifies things to your understand. Will help you in lab and provides flexible office hours until you have learned all the material to get a good grade on upcoming tests, quizzes and labs. Homework is not mandatory but recommended.
The labs are easy. Quizzes are exactly the same as the practice quizzes. She's not fond of explaining something over or helping you- tends to leave you more confused. The tests, on the other hand, can be difficult if you do not prepare yourself well.
Chem is a hard class, so no matter what teacher you get, it's not an easy A. She was a really good teacher as far as chem teachers go. There were a lot of quizzes (every week) and tests (5 plus final) and they were hard- steps up from the examples in class. Definitely got to work for it, but she's probably the best you're gonna get.
The best chem teacher I have ever had! She teaches hard concepts in a very clear way and always helps you if you need it. Just show up to class and pay attention and you will do fine. Also recommend doing the extra credit because it will raise your grade a lot!
Pro's- Makes any commute worth it, lab is easy, clear during lecture, super sweet, willing to help, and makes hard concepts easier. I don't have any con's. Just follow directions, STUDY STUDY STUDY for exams and you should be in good shape to get an A or a B. Excited for her 120 class.
Professor Petersen is an amazing lecturer. This class helped me understand chemistry and learn to enjoy it! I took the class over the summer and it was intense, however if you study hard from the beginning of class to the end you do well. The only other thing I would advise is to rent the book and not to buy it. We barely used it during the class.
I love this professor so much! She's hilarious and very energetic in her lectures - truly cares what she teaches! As long as you follow with the lecture - like working with her (as she asks) - It's an easy A. She really wants everyone to succeed and the way she explains things is SUPER helpful! Love this teacher!
She's awesome! Amazing lectures, labs are easy if you read the directions and an overall great person. Office hours are super helpful for this hard class. Her exams are not easy at all. Takes a lot of practice and dedication to do well. Do that and you'll be in good shape. Not an easy A though.
She's a great teacher! she posts the entire semester notes on canvas but lectures are important. She explains the lap really well but if you have a question after she gets annoyed but i dont blame her since she explains everything in detail so you need to listen! helpful during office hours. grades heavy but questions are easy if you understand
Professor Petersen is very accomplished, teaches to make her students understand. She is very kind, answers all questions to make sure no student is left struggling. Re-learning the basics of chemistry after having already advanced to the highest levels of chemistry classes was tough since basics are easily forgotten. Take her class, you will learn.
Very knowledgeable about chemistry, always *able* to answer questions, but often unwilling. When approached to ask a question during lab, you more often than not walk away like you are the stupidest person in the class. Very inconsistent- great in class setting, explains things well: but only in lecture. Once you get to lab, its a different story.
Very nice and flexible, but is a very tough grader. Makes chemistry fun and is a really good teacher.
I took CHEM108 over the summer semester, and when I signed up for Prof. Petersen's class I hated chemistry. At the end of the semester not only did I understand chemistry better than I ever had before, but I now love chemistry, and am majoring in chemical engineering. Her class is hard, but if you work hard you will do well in her class.
I was terrified taking Intro Chem and she made it so much fun & digestible. No homework (gives problems if you want the practice tho), quiz every week, exam every 2/3 weeks, hella extra credit, labs are doable, and again she's hilarious & has an A1 personality so I 100% recommend her <3
I love Anne! She makes her lectures so enjoyable and funny, and very useful. She's a very busy professor but still makes time for you in office hours. If you're scared to take chem, Anne is the professor for you. It is by no means easy but you put the effort in, an A is promised. Highly recommend!
I loved Anne, she's super down to earth & respectable. Chem is not easy for me whatsoever, but she really knows what she's doing and how to teach it well. She curves your test average, & homework's not graded. Ask questions if you don't understand and STUDY HER PRACTICE TESTS, they're the same as her tests. Very organized resources online.
Anne is the best! I had little experience with chemistry and was nervous my first semester at DVC (Fall '18) and Anne gave me confidence to succeed in this course. Homework, lab, and quizzes are fair and she readily answers student questions. In addition, she gives you the full lab period to finish each exam. Take Anne!
Extremely helpful if you have any questions on anything and is easily accessible through email. All of the semester is laid out for you and there is no homework to be turned in, she provides problems as practice which are definitely recommended to do though. Chem is not easy but if you take it do yourself a favor and take it with Anne!
One of the best professors I've had. I found myself actually learning and understanding chemistry. Her lectures are amazing and I didn't even have to read the book. Her transition to online class was literally the best out of all my other professors. Her videos and quizzes were straightforward and I was still learning unlike in my other classes.
Half the class dropped i think that explains everything. she has a lot of labs and homework is given every week. Idk why people are saying there isnt hw but there is lol. theres a quiz every week and like 4+ exams. She thinks everyone cheats even if you didn't so be careful if you do take her, but u shouldnt unless ur desperate, like veryyyy
Half the class dropped. Half the class dropped of an intro to chem class lol. She does not care about ur time and accuses u and the whole class of cheating. All these good reviews u see are from when school was in person not online. She really makes u pay for being online also by giving a huge amount of work to do. No time for other classes at all
Lectures are uploaded in advance of synchronous class time, so it's not mandatory to come to the classes unless you have questions. There is weekly homework from the textbook but otherwise I didn't use the book at all. Also weekly labs and quizzes. Very accessible outside class. She provides practice quizzes/exams, but everything is open note.
Half class dropped. The comment below this was def not one of the students it was most likely by her. Take it if u want no time for anything and a challenge for ur self. She stuffs u with unnecessary work that isnt relevant to the exams. Not recommended at all.
Do not take her. She takes advantage of online and makes u pay for it stuffing u with loads of work. This does not feel like an intro to chem class. Get ready of 20+ hours of work a week this class alone. She even makes u sign a paper accepting that much work a week if not ur dropped. Good luck taking her online.
In a nutshell, RUN away FROM THIS PROFESSOR. She refuses to answer your questions and instead directs you to incorrect video lectures of hers. She is unfamiliar with the subject very sympatheti Making multiple mistakes in her teaching and your grading (And if you brought it up to her, she would say "IT is What it is" or "This is not how I want it.
Mediocre teacher. Lectures are okay but she does not show compassion for students nor her job. She told me ¨it´s not rocket science¨ when I asked a question about lab. She does not care about the mental health of her students, I dropped because she is very unapproachable. I was able to get an A with another professor, please take someone else.
Anne is a great teacher. She knows what she is talking about and her lectures are very clear. The only thing is she is not very approachable. She is a little cold when you ask her questions. But nonetheless she was a great and fair professor, considering you put in the work yourself too.
I'm not gonna deny that she knows what she talking about, but STAY AWAY. She is SUPER uncaring about helping her students and is honestly very entitled. You better show up to lectures, because there's no chance that she's gonna explain it again. Very rude, and LOVES to humiliate students. Lastly, if you're middle eastern, STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS.
doesn't seem to understand that students have lives outside of class. Unreasonable amount of work, especially considering that your grade is solely dependent on the tests. homework is MUCH harder than it needs to be, and don't bother with office hours. if you care about you mental health and life, both school and personal, don't take Anne Petersen.
Petersen is BY-FAR the worst teacher I have ever had. You are pretty much graded by 4 exams, which are SO MUCH harder than they need to be, and don't bother with study guides, half her answers are wrong, with no work shown. Terrible attitude towards students, vindictive, and self-centered. Picks on students, and constantly embarrasses them.
She is doesn't care about her student, doesn't answers even if she has time to do so.Then question herself why the class hate her. Practice test are nothing like the exam. You need to remember everything. She is extremely picky on the lab report and if not perfect doesn't take the time to grade it. DON'T TAKE HER SHE IS THE WORST TEACHER EVER;
Anne is simply the worst. She is insanely uptight, condescending, & unsympathetic. Assigned an unreasonable amount of homework, yet made it worth 1% of our grade. Her weekly quizzes DO NOT prepare you for the exams. Plus, lots of the exam questions were material she never covered in class. It felt like she was taking her personal life out on us.
Anne Petersen is the worst chemistry professor I have ever encountered. Her teaching style is dull and uninspiring, making it difficult to stay engaged during lectures does not seem to care about her students' success or understanding of the subject matter. If you want to learn chemistry and actually pass your classes, I suggest looking elsewhere.
Professor Petersen was absolutely one of the best professors I have ever had. Going into DVC, chemistry was one of my worst subjects but Professor Petersen made learning chemistry interesting, fun, and enjoyable. She is an INCREDIBLY motivating and supportive teacher that wants all her students to be successful. TAKE HER! You will not regret it.
Prof P is a great instructor. CHEM is difficult, but she makes accessible. I worked hard and if I had started earlier it might have been easier. She is caring for her students and sat to explain ideas to me and others. There are negative remarks that seem to be the opinion of one upset student and so posts over and over. I think that is wrong.
Anne's a great teacher. I've struggled with chem before because it's not easy for me but I asked a lot of questions and she was willing to spend time with me to help me understand.
Anne teaches a difficult subject very well. Her class required work, and she did an excellent job of guiding us through chemistry concepts and problems. I learned a ton, and I got an A by preparing (homework and studying), putting in sustained effort and asking questions. Prepare, and she'll help you get the grade. Chemistry is hard - Anne is not.
I struggled in chem in high school so I wasn't looking forward to taking more chem in college. Professor Petersen actually made chem enjoyable! I worked really hard and I think she appreciated that. I showed up to every class and did all the homework problems and labs. She went above and beyond to make sure I understood the material.
The negative reviews down below are all from one bitter student in my class who didn't work hard enough and tried to cheat their way through. Professor Petersen is awesome! Definitely my favorite teacher at DVC. You have to pay attention and work hard but you will learn a lot! I wish she taught chem 121 so I could take it with her!
She is a very fair grader, and will give feedback on every test, hw, and lab report. Lecture is not required but lab is. She is hilarious and cares about every student.
Prof. Petersen is great! Very knowledgeable and love the way she teaches - great lectures and lab. Very supportive professor. I really wish Prof. Petersen taught Chem 121 too. I do wish this course had been offered over 4 days as it would have been easier for me to have broken it up. Definitely recommend taking this professor!!
i loved her class! i took chemistry during covid, so i was nervous that i'd find it hard. she made it so easy to understand and labs are fun too. very math heavy and if you havent build a solid foundation on conversions, you 'll be screwed. 4 exams (not cumulative) + textbook homework + challenge worksheet + lab reports. pay attention to lectures!
Prof Peterson is a great professor that I would definitely recommend to anyone whos worried about taking chemistry. There is 2 assignments every week for homework plus a lab report (if not finished during lab). There are 4 exams throughout the year, no surprises she provides all the materials to help pass exam. Overall great and funny professor!!
If you are taking more than three classes stay away! You have SO MANY assignments and I spend over 12 hours a week just doing hw, not even counting studying. I do more work for this class than I do for all four of my others COMBINED. She makes things way too difficult, doesn't explain concepts and acts like her students don't have any other classes
Very particular ab things, but gives you insanely clear lectures/material to study off of for exams. USE TXTBOOK TO STUDY she grabs so much from it. Tests are crazy long and she grades fairly but tough. Lots of homework but it helps on exams. Curves exams/final grades. Wants u to succeed if u do the work. DO NOT SLACK or u will not get good grade.
Chem is not the easiest for me, and the tests can be complex, but she's a good professor.
Do not take this professor if you value any of your personal time. She will drain you of all your energy by assigning an obscure amount of homework, and demands extreme precision on everything or else she marks you down fully. She demands 18 hours of work a week, making taking other classes practically impossible along with her course. Stay away!
Anne is funny and works hard to teach the concepts. Homework IS studying - learn concepts in the homework problems (go to her office hours if you need help) and you will do well. The only people I've heard complaining are people who don't attend class much or don't pay attention in class. Listen, attend, do homework as study and you will succeed!
Very skilled and experienced teacher. Chemistry is a hard subject but she really explains difficult material well. Her office hours are extremely helpful but I also found doing the homework each week helped me prepare for tests. Caring and supportive teacher.
Prof Petersen is a VERY FAIR teacher. I took her class last year. Yes, chem is hard. But she understands it better than anyone and if you follow her instructions and do the required coursework and labs you WILL do well. Go to office hours. There are no tricks in her class. Do the work, listen and you'll learn a lot + have a positive experience.
Excellent professor. Nervous about chemistry but she taught it very well. I'm proud of my grade as I worked very hard. I would definitely take another class with Petersen. Definitely one of the best teachers I have had at DVC.
Very clear instructions. Makes difficult concepts understandable. If you listen in class and do the work, you will get a good grade. If you slack off you won't. Petersen excellent with office hours. If you have questions ask. She's so helpful.
Anne is an okay professor overall. Her lectures are great, but in the lab, she can be a bit difficult to approach. She tends to get frustrated if you ask questions more than once, which makes it harder to get help when needed. The tests and exams are pretty tough, and to earn an A, you'll likely need to dedicate 40+ hours of work per week.
Her lecture and lab are very organized. If you want to learn something take this class cuz she is one of few professors at DVC who actually teaches something. No political propaganda nor drama. Definitely not an easy A tho.
Anne is very knowledgeable about the topics covered in this class. She's always happy to explain and answer questions about problems in the homework, textbook, lectures, etc. If you have taken Chem 108 and are planning on taking Chem 120, be aware that you will have to put much, much more work into this class than you did in Chem 108!
I did terrible in science in high school but was proud of how well I did in Professor Petersen's class. Do the work! And if you have questions ask her. She is so helpful and by just doing the assignments and getting help I got the best grade I have ever gotten in science. I'd take another class with her.
Great teacher. Answered my questions. Very approachable.
There are so many good chemistry professors at DVC, don't take her. She makes chemistry seem more difficult than it is, very unengaging, and doesn't want to answer questions. She wants you to do lab questions at home on top of the 3 hours of lab time, she discourages students, and she's very nitpicky about how things are done.
Awful professor
Helpful, caring, outstanding teacher. Chemistry is a challenging subject but she makes it clear and interesting.
mid professor
not great professor. its been a while since I took her class. but I just finished organic chem, and somehow she made gen chem way harder than gen chem 2 and o chem. Tests are unreasonably hard and long. No matter how much u study, her test questions are just unpredictable and she tries to trick you.
She really knows what she is doing and is no-nonsense in a good way. Most of the lab is just following directions so it's a tough class because of the tests but lab is really easy. The lecture is well planned-you learn about a topic and then do a problem. She's tough but give her a chance, she keeps it real.
god awful and extremely rude never shoulda taken he class
She is the worst professor at DVC, making the lab much harder than necessary. She nitpicks the smallest details, such as handwriting and whether answers are boxed. She also never takes the time to explain how to solve the problems in lecture.
She is the worst professor at DVC; so many others are better. She shows no respect for her students and their learning.
Coming back after finishing gen chem 2 and in o chem 2, this was the worst chem class i've had in my life. Not only did anne make things more complicated and difficult than you need to know for gen chem 1, she was also rude and took her anger and stress out on multiple students making it personal. A lot of people didn't even want to show up anymore
Taking her class was the worst decision I could have made. She never taught the material, and because of that, I didn't get the grade I needed to transfer.
The way she teaches the material is the worst I have ever experienced. She tends to ignore questions that she deems stupid and rarely answers questions during lab. However, she expects students to come to her office hours, which are very late in the evening. Most of the time, the feedback that she gives just says to write neater or bigger.
I wouldn't say Anne is the worst professor I've had, but this class was definitely a lot more difficult than I had anticipated. Don't undermine how difficult Chemistry can be, especially if you have a very specific learning style. I'd recommend her if you have an amazing memory and can learn quickly, but if you don't, definitely stay away.
Great professor! Teaches the material so clearly and makes chemistry fun! Definitely take this professor.
Anne is a great professor! I really enjoyed her class and learned lots of chemistry!
Anne is a really good teacher and explains things well in lecture and in lab. She seems to care about us learning the material to prepare us for future classes. Chemistry isn't easy, it requires a lot of time to "get it," and Anne really tries to give us what we need to succeed. Listen, work hard and ask questions and you'll do well in her class.
I have taken a number of chemistry classes with a number of chemistry professors and Anne is by far my favorite, and will likely always be. Anne will give you the tools and skills necessary to not only pass this class, but to excel in it too. Beyond the scope of Chem 1, Anne will set you up extremely well for Chem 2 and Ochem. Take Anne!!!
Would not recommend
god awful. this prof made me hate my major and I had to teach myself to remember to love what I do again. don't take if you don't want your life drained out of you
abuses her authority and petty
She abuses her authority and is overly petty. Her exams are long and unnecessarily difficult. She's extremely nitpicky with labs, rarely gives high marks, and rushes students to finish. She won't even allow students an extra 5 minutes after class to complete or clean up after lab work if you run a bit behind others.
If you're checking reviews, note that a 5-star reviewer claims all concerns about Anne are fake and we just didn't try. I have a B and still had major issues. Funny how all the 1-star reviews keep getting taken down to protect her rating. That says more about the teaching from Anne than the students and the effort being put into the class.
After reading other reviews, I am glad I dropped. However, I still stayed in longer than I should've. It is important to underline how hard everyone in the class works, yet we still don't receive the grades that reflect that. If you are wondering whether or not to take her or someone else, don't take her. Save yourself lol
All the 5-star reviews don't reflect how this class is actually taught by Anne. Our final is tomorrow, and despite all the hard work students have put in everyday this semester, it likely won't be enough given how tough the previous exams were. We spend 10+ hours on homework each week, and she doesn't even give feedback on what to improve.
ain't as bad as some of the reviews say but yes she gives a lot of work. as long as you read the textbook and teach yourself you're chilling. she can be very rude sometimes but also very nice so ymmv
Many people struggle with Chem bc it's their first science class and likely explains the bad reviews. This is just reality of stem courses. Anne's homework and lecture packets are one to one with questions she gives on the exams. She is incredibly kind and caring, and she's been the first professor at DVC to really take interest and get to know me.
Genuinely, she is a good teacher but she gives out alot of paper. Her lecture papers are Mostly on the test, just know chemistry is hard and its not easy. Anne really tries her best to help you out and understand chemistry! Just know chemistry is a hard subject but she makes it east to understand.
She is one of the great professors in DVC, and I find her professional in her job. I had a nice Spring semester with her and totally recommend her to other students.
It is definitely a tough class, but if you put in the work and reach out to her for help, she will can definitely give you the guidance you need
Anne is one of the most caring professors I've had. During Chem 121, I asked her about a problem she couldn't solve right away, but later she came up to me and asked if I figured it out. That small gesture showed how much she cares. She's patient, supportive, and truly wants her students to succeed.
Anne is an extremely kind and caring professor! She's funny, engaging, and extremely organized!!!! If you ever need help she is accesible during office hours and will make time for you if you cannot attend. I've never had a better professor.
Out of all the chemistry classes I've taken this was the first one that helped me to actually understand chemistry. I got an A in chem 121 because of how much practice I had in this class. It's a lot of work but if you want to actually understand it and do well in future chem classes take this class! Make sure to ask questions if you need any help.
Anne is truly one of the most amazing and, quite literally, the best professors I've ever had in my entire life. She's kind, caring, and if you work hard and ask for help, she will stay by your side and motivate you until you achieve your goal. The way she teaches is amazing, and you will truly learn a great deal about chemistry!
I 100% reccommend taking Anne for chem! I haven't taken chemistry in so long and was so worried, but she has made this semester super enjoyable. She is SUCH a great teacher! Workload is very manageable. Weekly quizzes, (use the practice quizzes on canvas to study) weekly HW, and weekly worksheets. As long as you show up and study you'll do great.
She lectures with humor, is very down to earth, and very understanding. Attendence is required (can't do labs at home... duh) If you have a question during lecture, you can just shout it out, since she might not see you. If I needed more chem classes I would DEFINITELY pick her again.
I took this class up until the last day to withdraw so i spent all semester with Anne. She was so rude and not helpful. when I or any other peers would ask her a questions she would tell us to "figure it out". like what??? also would tell us that everyone will die lonely. dont take.
I took this class in Fall 2025. Anne is fair but can be strict or condescending at times. The class is fast-paced, so prior chemistry helps. Watching Organic Chemistry Tutor videos and keeping up with homework and practice exams makes earning a B or higher very achievable.
Chem is hard. She rewrote the lab manuals so labs were great. Lectures were chill. Exams were pretty hard. She's sweet &will help you if you ask and you're trying your best. Don't expect her to be kind if you're RUDE, life doesn't work that way. Go to OH, ask questions, read the TB, watch videos, do your HW. It'll be okay. Love her, thank you Anne!
