This was a very difficult class. She's not a terrible teacher, it's just a lot of confusing, difficult material she has to teach. Keep up because the minute you fall behind it's all over. She's very helpful if you reach out to her. Take advantage of her office hours! I got a B in the class but it is the hardest class I've taken so far in college.

Obviously this is 300 level class so it won't be easy and NO multiple choice tests.(Some matching questions in the final). You really have to study hard in order to well but she is always in her office to help you out and do all the hw problems she assigns (some showed up in the test). The lecture was okay and posts all the powerpoint in bb.

Her lectures are pretty good, make sure you pay attention because she gives good examples to help you understand the concept. Do the HW (hw isn't a grade nor do you have to turn it in, its just problems for practice), this will help you pass the exams.

i LOVED dr. schere. she rocks!! she's such a sweet lady, and super approachable. I just read the textbook and did the practice problems that she assigned, and i did fine. Her powerpoints were helpful too. RECOMMENDED

Go to CLASS- she often gives hints on test Q and common misconceptions! Print out the notes and write on them as she lectures explaining experiments/ concepts or math problems. I never READ the book this way. Do the ungraded HW (hard Q show up on exams, so just do them!) and study your written ppt notes like the bible and guaranteed A!

Class isn't hard, but tests are long for the amount of time. She usually helps when there is a quiz so its easy to get 100 on them. Book isn't that necessary. Class only mandatory for iClickers.

Her class was pretty straightforward. Her in class problems and homework questions were sometimes verbatim to her test questions. If you go to her office hours regarding confusing concepts, she does her best to clarify concepts. If you have any more confusion, just read the textbook. Her class was pretty easy, and she's a nice sweet lady.

Great professor, super sweet and incredibly knowledgeable about the subject she teaches. Her power points may be a little bare, but that's how it should be if the professor actually lectures, and doesn't just read off the slides. Exams are extremely fair and there is not attempt to trick or confuse the student.

Love Dr. S! Going to class isn't mandatory but she gives iclicker quizzes once a week (she practically gives the answers), which help boost your overall grade. She has a quirky sense of humor and her exams are more math-based and short answers/fill in blanks, not multiple choice, but she curves. Beware of time during exams. She's very nice.

Dr. S is an amazing person and seems super passionate about what she teaches. I just couldn't get into her lectures though, they were incredibly dry and boring to me. The exams aren't too bad, but they're all math and short answer, so it's not a class you can BS- you either know the content or you don't. Overall, it was a decent class.

Professor Scherer is a great professor! Those who have rated her poorly either A) did not go to class B) did not do the homework problems or C) both A and B. The course is tough, but Professor Scherer makes it as easy as possible for student by being entirely straight forward about what is expected of students. Also, GO TO THE ORAL WIKIS!!

I love genetic and I loved her classes. She is a nice person and the exams are the same as lecture and txt book problems. She literarily gives your the answer for iclicker quizzes so if you just show up you will get the full point for her quizzes. And if you read her powerpoints and do textbook problems you will be fine for her exams.

She's explains well although she reads off the slides. Her class is not easy since there is no homework grade. Exams affect most of your grade. If you do terribly on one exam, you will most likely not pass the class. Read through power point slides before class. Do not skip classes. Be engaged in lectures and do your homework as soon as possible.

Not an easy class, but getting an A is not impossible as long as you go to lectures and voluntarily do assigned homework.

Dr. Scherer is a good professor. She tries to make this class as approachable as possible and she wants all students to get help whenever they need. Her tests are very fair. If you want to get an A, just go to class, review your notes, do well on lab, and make sure you practice all homework problems. It's that simple.

I spoke with friends from other BIOL311 sections, and seems like Prof. Scherer is the best! Genetics is tough, but she is v. helpful: answers questions in class, has practice exams+keys, office hours. GO TO CLASS! Don't need the book, only need the practice problems it has (ungraded but MANDATORY). If you have to take BIOL311, take Scherer.

I have really enjoyed genetics. Dont be fooled this class is hard and is meant to be difficult but she really provides all the info you need. You just have to apply that info. Studying is a must and I found the book problems very helpful for application to her exams. Just be sure u understand the topics and u will be fine.

Don't be scared by other reviewers. Dr. Scherer is amazing. You really need to attend lectures and take good notes. She tells you what types of questions are going to be on the exam. Do the textbook problems and previous exams to prepare for exam. Put in the effort and you will get an A.

Those who write bad reviews about her obviously did not go to class or were always on their phones in class, never participated, complained that she did not give them exact exam questions to study before the exam, and felt they could pass with little work. This professor was great!

She's a great professor. Quizzes help boost the grade - don't be threatened by some of the bad reviews... Use the study guide, go to review sessions if you have time. Some of the review for chapters are recorded by the LAs... Overall if you put in effort as in any class you will definitely succeed - Best wishes!

This was my favorite class in college so far because I found genetics so interesting! Dr. Scherer loves when you ask get questions during lecture. You can get the previous edition of the textbook to save money. Her problems come straight from the book sometimes. The tests are a combination of short answer, multiple choice, and multi-step problems.

Dr. Scherer is a great lecturer, however this class is quite difficult. Make sure to go to each class and also try to do your best in lab because that is 25% of the grade. The rest of your grade is mainly reliant on the 2 exams (20% each) and final (30%). Fly project is a lot of work but paper is easy. Make sure to do the practice exams and H.W.

Prof. Scherer is a really nice and fair professor. Her exams can be overwhelming if youre not used to short answer/problem solving written tests but theyre fair. Shes lenient & gives 2 weeks for any errors in her grading. To review for her exams, make sure to do the HW problems, past exams and PPT questions and youll get a good grade!

I was skeptical of Scherer at first, but the class was 200+/probs hard to teach. went to office hours and she was so so so helpful and personable. studied LA's review lectures and her PPT slides + old exams. Recommend asking questions during office hours/lecture. Tests short answer/MC/matching (hard tests). iClickers helped. Lab grade helped lots

She's the best genetics prof b/c she doesn't test on lab! There's more than enough resources for all the units and all the LA's are willing to help. Do ALL the hw problems, go over the ppt slides, go over the LA notes, attend review sessions and attend office hours! First portion of class is problem solving and second half is memorization mostly.

Love her! She's so funny and is a good teacher. Go to LA review sessions or watch the online recordings, the class is tough. We had 5 point curves on our 2 exams, but idk what the curve was on the final. Don't take this class if you already have a heavy course load, the lab is 25% and is a lot of commitment because of the fruit fly experiment.

Prof. S was very clear about what she tested us on: recommended problems from the textbook and ppts. Her practice exams were practically a replica of the types of questions that showed up on the real thing; make sure to master those. It was also helpful to go over the ppts for the exams, especially for the second half of this course. DO take her!

I absolutely loved her lectures, they were very interesting. She also made the material very straightforward and clear. As long as you do all of the homework problems, the practice exams, go to the review sessions, and go to her office hours, there is no reason why you shouldnt get an A. Shes very sweet, caring and ready to help you!

Professor Scherer was very sweet and caring. Definitely can't skip class because she does unannounced iclicker quizzes which is an easy, much needed, way to rack up points in this class. Tests weren't too bad as long as you studied, but actually the class seemed much easier after everything switched online. Definitely recommend taking her!

Professor was great! She recorded all of her lectures and there were no surprises or trick questions on the exam. If you do all of the homework and practice exams, you will be prepared for the exams. I took the accelerated course so there was a lot of material to cover in just 5 weeks. You can easily fall behind.

Loved her class so much! Her lectures are very straightforward and she adds in some cute jokes and puns. Her exams are very similar to practice questions she gives. Super easy class would definitely take her again!

She's a nice professor and teaches the class well. She records all lectures so you don't have to go to the actual class time. Gives extra credit for quiz grades but it's worth a small percent of whole grade. Do hw problems! They help with the exams.

People complained about her but she was great! She provides HW and practice exams/problems so if you do those, you will be golden on her tests. The class is hard but she gave us all of the tools to succeed. If you dont do well with time management and test prep then this isnt a good class bc there is a lot of material. I really enjoyed her class!

Dr. Scherer's lectures are very helpful and she is very good at explaining difficult concepts! The class takes a lot of practice, and she gives optional homework problems for each chapter that help a lot. There are also a couple quizzes a week that also really help you understand the material. I would definitely take her again!

Very organized course and easy to understand. Provides problems in slides and textbook that are very helpful on tests. Quizzes have similar material both in format and concepts to exams. Helpful Q&A review sessions. Very clear when answering questions. Cheat sheet allowed. Great prof!

Great professor! Genetics is known for being hard but she works with you to try to add points where she can (extra credit quizzes, cheat sheet for exams, weekly quizzes can be retaken until you get a 100%) Powerpoints for each chapter came w/ annotated slides and her voiceovers if you learn best that way. Really took the time to teach well 10/10.

I first took Genetics with professor Bell. I did not learn a single thing and was forced to withdrawal from the class. However when I took genetics with Dr. S, I was able to learn the material much easier. She really does a good job on explaining how to solve the problems. If you want a good grade in this course, you really have to work for it.

She's pretty good at teaching genetics. Lectures are live and recorded. Homework is ungraded, so as light or heavy as you want. Quizzes are multiple choice and can be retaken unlimited times to get to 100%. Exams are a little on the difficult side due to a lot of free answer questions. As long as you understand the process you'll be fine.

I took Anne for genetics and she is amazing. Her lectures were online and easy to understand. It is really hard material but she explains everything really well and her review sessions are helpful as well. Tests and quizzes are the only grades but there is optional homework thats super helpful to understand the material

I am not sure why she is getting that much hate. She is a good lecturer and is willing to help students during office hours. This was a difficult class but practice is necessary to do good on exam which 100% reflect on the lectures provided by her. Definitely doable class but you need to be as much effort as you can. She is a solid choice.

I'm basing my review off Dr. Scherer and not Genetics. The course was very organized and she gives you all the materials to succeed. Study ALL practice exams and do the homework! She was also very understanding when I had to make up an exam. I really dislike genetics. The lab is complete garbage though. The best for BIOL 311 hands down.

Dr. Scherer is great at simplifying complicated concepts and is always clear what her expectations of what we need to know for the exams. To succeed, watch all of her lectures, complete all the recommended homework problems, and do the quizzes on time. The first 2/3 of the class is problem-solving heavy, while the last 1/3 is conceptual.

Listen. I took biology at GMU twice the first time I got a D with a different professor, but with Dr.Scherer I got an A. She is easily the best genetics professor at GMU. Do the quizzes, pay semi attention in class. Use the class discord when confused. Take practice exams. Free A. The quizzes are unlimited takes too.

Dr. Scherer is an amazing lecturer. Tests are 60% of your grade, but as long as you do the homework and practice exams, there's no reason for you to not get an A. She is also always available if you are in need of help. As long as you attend lecture and do the work, you should be good.

Dr. Scherer is an amazing professor! Clear instructions and engaging lectures. Listening to her pre-recorded lectures, redoing homework problems, and doing quizzes/practice exams help with studying. She genuinely cares about her students-please attend office hours! Prioritize studying for Exam 1 as it demands the most logic-thinking approach.

Great option for genetics. Weekly quizzes. IMO you don't need the textbook, just take notes on the prerecorded lectures and do the quizzes and practice exams. Dr S offers lots of office hours and problem-solving sessions, attend them! Exams are similar to the practice exams. Exam 3 is the most conceptual so be sure to study well for that one!

Dr. Scherer makes complicated genetics concepts digestible. Engage with the lectures, quizzes, and practice exams to succeed. unstuck ai's study tools also helped me prepare efficiently for this class.

Dr Scherer is a great choice, with lots of guidance on how to do well and is very accessible out of class. I thought she was great. Don't listen to the whiners.
