If you plan on taking this course, good luck. An absolute horrible lab manager, I am calling her that because she has not earned the right to be called a professor yet. Unorganized, unnecessarily rude towards students, acts like a know it all, calls out students for getting things wrong. If you sign up for this course and you get her have fun.
Terrible lab manager. Had the pleasure of interacting with her multiple times this semester for the labs, she was extremely rude and condescending towards students. For the lab final, she walked around yelling "5 marks off" to around 10 people who were finishing up and were not aware that the time allotted for the experiment was over.
The most condescending person I have ever met in my life especially for a professor. It seems like all she wants is for the teacher to fail. Also the grading scheme in this class is so random that it's unfair, my TA took pride in finding the smallest mistakes that we made whereas I know some of the other TAs were a lot more relaxed.
Insanely bad and most tough grader and terrible lab manager. seems like she has a problem with students
She was condescending, rude and belittles her students. She has no sympathy for those in her class and even builds on your stress when she can see that you may be struggling. 100% a terrible lab manager
The assignments will often have unclear instructions, and if you ask her about it she's weirdly rude and condescending about answering them. For example, the instruction will be vague about where to submit an assignment and the whole class will be confused, and when asked, she'll tell you to read it again carefully when it's clearly not there.
She won't listen to you, she won't try to help you, she doesn't want you to succeed, she'll think you're stupid if you make the slightest mistake. I've tried very hard to like her, but I can't. She doesn't belong in the education field. People who are in this field are meant to teach you and help you succeed... she's the polar opposite.
Being strict is fine, however, she sounds discouraging and impatient, and does not treat students with respect. Her instructions are vague and confusing. If you ask for clarifications, she thinks you have not paid enough attention and would often quote "As clearly states in the instructions" or "read the instructions again very carefully".
Had to take the lab component of CHEM 120/123 online and honestly worst experience ever. Online lab was a video played over zoom, which gives like 1 frame per second and I emailed to ask for the video and got a message saying "sorry we can't have students download the video." We can't even see the procedure but are expected to get all observations.
Doesn't care if you accidentally submitted the wrong thing, lots of prep required for the labs
Walked into this class with the hope of learning about entry level labs. Then I met Thomas, hands down the most rude and condescending teacher I have ever met. Will lash out at you via email if you ever question the instructions or ask about a grade. The whole lab is awful because of the way she runs it. Be better
Just finished the course and I've never been so happy. Those were the 4 worst months of my academic life. Poorly designed course. Terrible instructions. Mean/Condescending teaching from Thomas. We were given 45 mins to do the final lab when it takes over 120mins to do correctly. My prayers go out to all the freshman who have her next year
First of all, I just finished a final we were promised 2 hours for the EDF, and Um, we were given 45 minutes instead. Criteria for marking is completely random. And even being the most Knowledgeable student wouldn't save you.
I thought I was supposed to learn from a chem lab. instead i learned how to type w super speed bc the final was 45 MINUTES???? greatly under qualified. extremely poor course design. be prepared to cry. sets impossible standards with absolutely no consideration for students.
I have never seen a more disorganized, inconsiderate course structure and management, especially considering the new online format. The final exam was 45 minutes for an exam that takes minimum one hour. Even through technology errors, it was considered the student fault. This is new territory of teaching online, but this was unjust.
Be prepared to not know what's going on at all. This class made me want to rip my hair out, and not because of the material, that was relatively simple. The lack of information given was insanity. For the final we had no clarification on what was happening, I asked one of the TAs and they were told nothing, if the TA's have no info what am I to do?
Absolute worst course I have taken. Extremely unfair grading and 0 guidance. Given an outline for our final exam yet to our surprise it was closed book, and we were not given a second more that 45 mins to finished things we were used to doing in multiple hour sittings.
Let me start of with this, this class is absolutely horrible. 1) The class is extremely disorganized to the point where the TAs are useless. 2) the final was a disaster (didnt tell us the time frame before hand and was EXTREMELY unreasonable) All being said, do better to create a fair graded class next time. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE.
All-round atrocious organization coupled with little to no leniency. Marking is incredibly strict, sometimes with little to no reasoning for deducted marks. Clear rubric for mark distribution only given halfway over the course, final exam was unintuitively structured and time constrained to the point where it was impossible for many to finish.
Also go review Sophia Nussbaum the other prof for 115. Both are essentially running the course like an authoritarian regime, no freedom of thought, you have to conform to their mold to do well on the EDFs. The quality of the lab videos are absolutely horrendous and the lab is very mismanaged.
I do not know how to comment on this ridiculous course, which completely turn off my expectation and passions about future chemistry lab courses. TAs can not help anything when I ask questions; the prof attitude is disrespectful and rude for replying email; all materials are so ambiguous. The worst, horrible class I even attended!
HORRIBLE!! Steer clear if you can!! Anne is extremely condescending and doesn't care whatsoever. This entire course is very poorly run and was a complete joke. I know I received a good mark, but the process was exceptionally difficult when marks are deducted without explanation AND there is no feedback :( NEVER AGAIN will I take a course with her!
This was one of the worst courses I have taken. If you don't have to take it DON'T. The final exam was sooo unfair. Something that they give you at least a week to do beforehand and then another 3 hours in class was supposed to be done in 45 minutes. Please tell me where the logic is? You don't even have time to think. Overall I was always lost:)
Anne Thomas and Sophia Nussbaum feed off of freshman tears. It genuinely feels like they want their students to fail. Most Chem professors in the dpt. are great and want their students to succeed. These two are pretty much the opposite. Don't ask them questions because they will scream/humiliate you until you have a full mental breakdown in lab
I feel that she is against us than trying to support & facilitate our studies, the disorganization throughout this course, and the final says it all. I don't understand the lack of information provided on the logistics of the final?? it's a test of our knowledge, not who can type faster or deal with random technical glitches. absolutely ridiculous
Going through way too much bs for one credit. The final is messed up. The time frame is shorter than regular lab times (3 hours), feel like they are trying to cut corners on everything, and having rushed through writing the final myself, it doesn't justify shortening the time. The half-assed guideline for the final just showed they don't care
Never showed up to teach. 0 consideration for students, 45 min final, like a typing test. Bad attitude towards everyone, a TA claims that when he emailed about student tech issues, Ann cussed him out and told him not to contact her! Under-qualified, rude, negligent, does not care! Lab videos are low quality, TA's are clueless, no consistency.
Don't take this class with her, thats all i can say
Class was poorly organized, expectations were not clear in the beginning. No point in emailing her anything because she'll respond in an unhelpful and condescending way. Wasn't as difficult as others made it to be but I strongly advise against taking this course with her unless you have to.
Not a difficult class, but this prof doesn't seem to care about their students very much.
Truly HORRIBLE!! Not only was she extremely unhelpful when you email her with any questions, but her tone was also extremely condescending. I uploaded the wrong pdf, and I emailed her before the deadline. She said she would only allow me to reupload if I let her take 4 marks off from the assignment, which was out of 25. Makes no sense!
I had Anne Thomas for CHEM115... and I just finished CHEM135 in-person with her. Long story short, I was surprised in a good way. She popped in and out of each lab room, and from what I experienced, she was really caring. She helped me understand how to use the programs, had good banter, and was enthusiastic. Judged her too quick in 115.
I've yet to meet once person that has anything remotely positive to say about anne thomas. This course is completely doable to get a good mark if you put the work into it, but anne is just super condescending and not a great person to interact with
I took an in person chem 135 lab with Anne. I found her to be very helpful, kind and encouraging. Yes, she expects everyone to come to class prepared, but that really encourages you to be organized. I loved this lab and I wouldn't hesitate to take another lab she was running.
TAs were all super helpful and I'm not even sure if I actually met Anne, but if it is the Scottish lady then she is very nice. This course is designed for first years who have probably not yet experienced an in person uni chem lab. It is based around basic techniques and precision. Reports are very straight forward and graded by TAs (easy markers)
I just finished this in person class and with the few interactions I had with Anne I thought she was very kind, as well as helpful. I still believe the grading in this course (as well as most) is very ambiguous and depends on the TA you get... make sure you follow all the guidelines for lab reports and if something is marked incorrectly speak up.
Our impressions of Anne in CHEM115 were wrong, she turned out to be decently nice and kind in 135, and was helpful to the students both during the in person lab and outside of lab time with questions. While still a strict grader, her character in 135 shows she is nicer and kinder than 115 would have suggested, after we got to meet her in person.
I personally found Anne Thomas was nice and ran the lab courses well. I enjoyed Chem 135 a lot more than 115 (mainly because labs were in-person instead of online), but I still had a decent experience in Chem 115. In my opinion, the low reviews are excessive, as both Chem 135 and Chem 115 were pretty reasonable (class average in the low 80's).
Joked around with her during the in-person lab! Pointed out some things I was doing wrong, and created the course to be challenging, but that's to be expected. Just a genuine and effective educator that you can't go wrong with :)) great at responding to emails too
After reading all of the bad reviews I was not sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't have too many interactions with her but with the few I had I thought she was very kind. She helped me with setting up one of the programs and was encouraging when I wasn't sure what to do. Work is marked by TAs so it depends on who you get.
I have friends who took first year chem labs and said she had an awful/mean personality. When I took CHEM 135 this summer Anne was one of the nicest prof and most one of the funniest profs that I have ever encountered. I just love her sense of humor. I hated first year labs, but she made me feel less stressed about it.
I took the summer course with Anne and it was not fun. Although my work was at the level that it should be, it didn't matter. Everything comes down to your TA. Some TAs mark real hard and others don't. I was deducted for things that weren't on the rubric; my friends didn't include stuff and got full marks. I contested it with Anne; she didn't care.
CHEM115 gave me a bad impression of Anne, overall. However CHEM 135 changed that for me. She was nice, friendly, and helpful in labs (but her emails were still unhelpful and vague). If Gordon Ramsay had a female version of himself, it would be Anne. Comes off as hard and cold at first, but later on will be nice and warm.
Honestly, she was really nice. Maybe my experience was different. The labs also weren't that bad and Anne def helped if you needed it.
Zero organization with this class, so much work for one credit. Super unclear teaching and I hated it.
Unwilling to use proper pronouns and prefered names. Made experience in this class extremely unpleasant
The absolute worst Chemistry lab coordinator there is. There is so much to do for only 1 credit. She forces students to hand in lab reports in person at her office because "she doesn't like using Canvas". I have to commute for 3 hours so I can just hand in my lab report for her when it should just be on Canvas like ALL OTHER COURSES
There are barely any instructions to the lab, they are not teaching things. Every lab you have to do things w/o any pre-teaching, and WAY TOO MUCH work to do for 1 credit.
This was my second time with her, and it was worse than the first, which was bad to begin with. She is not an active instructor and is very difficult to talk to. She is not lenient whatsoever. The course canvas is very loaded and hard to navigate when there are different experiments being done at the same time. Too much work for 1 credit, -100/10.
The toughest grader and most terrible lab instructor I ever met
Way too much work and stress for 1 credit. I am glad I never have to go through first-year chemistry labs again.
I had to miss a couple labs due to other commitments, Anne was very flexible with me and helped accommodate my needs. She was very accessible outside of class and was very helpful
Anne is a very fast-paced lab coordinator and gives the feeling of pushing me to do things. She always responded to emails with a harsh tone and was not very polite. I would say that she is super unhelpful in the review for the final lab exam.
Was a bit hesitant to take this course given all the negative reviews, It is a lot of work, but that is expected given it is a lab course. I only encountered her a few times (the TA was the one mostly giving instructions), however from my experience, she gave clear instructions and was vocal about the marking criteria.
If you're reading all of these reviews and are afraid of taking Chem 121 now, don't be; In recent years, you'll likely never interact with Dr. T. Your TAs do all the marking and teaching in-lab. Either way, I found her to be super nice and helpful if you genuinely need help. Labs are very easy if you're prepared, so don't worry, you'll do fine!
lab was awful
I have known her for 4 years and is extremely rude. Needs to calm down and understand that its just a chem lab ....its never that deep
By all means, she strictly follows all rules. But she has 0 compassion or empathy for any student. There were too many occasions to name all but for example, I received a mark of 0 on a logistics quiz because I submitted the quiz 2 minutes late. To "promote equality among all students", she essentially forbids making any form of accommodation.
First-year labs are too much work. The information in the experimental overview is unclear and too wordy. Honestly, I don't see the point of writing your procedure. They said it's good practice for upper-year lab courses, but it's just an excuse for them to be lazy and not write the procedure themselves.
She has her moments of being really nice and friendly, but can also become verbally abusive in lab situations. It is honestly a hit or miss or her; you definitely do not want to ask her a question on a bad day for her.
Very strict and tough. Takes it too seriously. VERY harsh marking and late penalties.
CHEM123 labs are definitely tough if you don't prepare for them properly. There are lots of pre-lab resources available that make the lab go really smoothly and allow for success.
It's the second time working with Anne and I found that she was getting more accessible than the first time. If you do not prepare WELL for the lab, you will ABSOLUTELY ruin the lab report and may make you cry. Lab final exam is fairly standard without obvious tricky and harsh questions. Lab techniques are commonly used throughout the term.
Prepare to work on your own a LOT to get a good grade. Teaching nothing before she asks you to do the work.
She did not reply to my email. 0 empathy
IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER WAY, DO NOT TAKE THE LABORATORY WITH ANNE. TAs mostly mark your work but for this class, there is A LOT to do for just 1 credit. I cried before all the labs and after. We had to create our research experiment write a lot! and there were no examples. I didn't even know what we had to do... for what? 1 credit? worst coordinator.
Please don't take this with her. She has made these labs so difficult and I am crying every time we have a lab, I am having strong mental breakdowns because of the amount of work we have and I have gotten so depressed and no this is not an exaggeration.
I understand being in charge of all the 1st year labs is hard. HOWEVER, she shows no empathy towards students. She does not reply to emails, and is extremely condescending in announcements and in-person. You will not encounter her much in the lab, but having her replaced would make 1st-year chemistry much better for EVERY first-year student.
Alright yall, honestly, I've had this prof for both chem 121 and 123, and from my own experiences, she's been great. Never had a problem in labs or through email either. I'm pretty sure most of these reviews are from uncoordinated people who still expect to have their hand held in a university setting. She's just a straightforward prof lol.
Sure its a difficult leap into first-year labs but the workload is definitely manageable even with a full course load. There shouldn't be anyone crying from the work that's a crazy exaggeration. I'm more than halfway through the lab right now and its been fine.
She didn't directly involve the labs portion of this course and was mostly coordinating the TA team. I got a pretty strict TA so the experience was sad for me. Had minimal interaction with Anne, so can't say anything about her. However, most negative comments during the time were made because the student didn't follow the rules.
If you get her, you're cooked. She is not cooking. Get any other prof that's cooking. She makes you feel like a noob. #notaslay #cooked #noob
Lab portions of CHEM 121 and CHEM 123 are mainly dependent on who you get for your TA (whether they're a strict marker or not). Anne Thomas is only the coordinator and lab director of all the TAs. Based on my minimal interaction with her, as long as you are well prepared for the pre-labs, you will be fine, although her tone can be condescending.
屎中屎。是死m的可以找她
give me a low grade without accordance
This lab is set up to make you fail. It is so tense and stressful, and they discourage attempting to get feedback so you can improve before your next lab, after seeing your grade. Definitely promotes a tense hostile environment that makes it hard to succeed. The pre lab in itself takes 7-8 hours before every lab.
This isn't for anne thomas in particular but instead the chem 121 labs in general. Sure it is a LOT of pre lab work, but the actual labs themselves are so fun. You feel like an actual scientist doing work and at least the TA's in my section are really friendly and helpful. Make sure to be properly prepared before each lab, otherwise it will be hard
Her name should be Karen not Anne!
This professor is overly rated badly for no reason - you do not interact with her that much during the lab as you are supervised by your TAs. The work can be heavy but is certainly doable as the overview of experiments is pretty clear and you just add extra details to it. Just prepare and you'll be fine, the actual lab itself is not hard and fun
I haven't had many interactions with Anne Thomas, it is just your TA's that interact with you in the lab, but if you come to the labs prepared, you will do fine. Each lab is a learning opportunity, and you are only able to see your previous marked lab report during the next lab session. However by the second lab, you get get better at them.
Please don't be scared by the low rating. Dr. Thomas is quite pleasant (when you do see her), and the TAs (which are the ones assessing/helping you) are extremely supportive. This class is simply a matter of following instructions and being prepared for experiments (it is a real chemistry lab, after all - you need to know what you're doing).
Very hard to reach and unorganized.
Terrible at communicating, makes everything way more complicated than it should be. She is the only teacher for freshman labs however, so everyone in science has to take her class in first year.
she hates students. why not be approachable? "BuT rEall WOrld iS HaRSh." No, it is not. thank you for taking fun from chem.
I think all the low ratings are from people who weren't prepared very well for labs and ended up failing a bunch of them. As long as you start preparing 2–3 days in advance you'll be fine. All you have to do is copy the experiment overview before the lab and write down as many observations as possible in-lab.
Not the most welcoming face when you enter first year science. Over exaggerates everything and is very selective of what type of emails she responds to. I asked her a question that was very on topic and there weren't any rules saying I couldn't, but bro just ignored me like I was invisible. Always has that mean rbf and seems quite unapproachable
Anne is the coordinator for the lab portion of chem 121 and 123, however you'll rarely interact with her as TA's mostly mark and run your lab section/group. From my experience, Anne has always been nice to her students. However, if you are unprepared and lack the knowledge of the experiment you're doing, don't expect kindness.
Anne is really nice in person/in lab, but labs are just really painful. Get ready to do 5-6 hours of pre-lab prep for some of the harder ones, akin to pulling all your hair out strand by strand. Actually completing the labs is usually pretty chill but you NEED to prep well in advance.
why are you guys like this? anne doesn't even teach the labs––it's just the TAs. she has always been incredibly sweet in the few brief interactions i've had with her. yeah, the chem 123 labs were quite tedious at times, but i honestly don't think it's really anne's fault.
Someone tell the Chem Lab team that they don't need to be a d@$k to keep their job
horrendous
Incredibly unprofessional. I am shocked at her willingness to send out unbelievably rude emails, and how disrespectfully she behaves.
Had only one interaction with her through an email and the reply was unbelievably rude and vague... I am not sure about her in person however, the email made me feel really bad about myself, thus writing this review. I usually don't write reviews.
She lacks basic courtesy and respect in her interactions with others. This is merely an objective statement.
This class is TA-run; you likely won't see much of Anne Thomas. Don't let the reviews here scare you; they don't mean much. Anne is a kind, but busy, lady; imagine being responsible for over 2,000 first-years in a lab. There is a lot of pre-class work on the EDFs, but you only have the three-hour class every two weeks.
Dr. Anne Thomas is easily accessible outside of class and responds quickly and clearly to emails.
Just here to say do not let the reviews scare you. Your lab will be run and marked by a TA. My TA Charles was awesome. Only time I interacted with Anne was when I picked up the lab coat I bought. She seems nice though.
