She is so helpful and clear
Ok, she is actually a decent prof. Seems to know the material, comes across as very approachable and very fair in terms of oppourtunity for marks. But I can't stand the lectures, cause sounds like a 13 year old giving a grade school intrest talk. Everything is "like, ok, does that make sense?"
She is very helpful and the midterms are easy (for behaviour mod at least!). She has a sense of humour which makes her more of a person than most professors.
I didn't enjoy her class at all, I found her teaching to be very uninspiring and unoriginal. She lacks substance and makes up for it in quantity of notes. Way too hardcore for second year psychology.
great prof. sooo helpful, lots of questions answered in class really WANTS you to understand. concepts a bit dry, but she tries to make it interesting. Study and u can do well.
Anneke is great! She is probably one of the best psychology professors I have had to date. Very helpful, clear and her lectures cover all of the text material which basically means you don't need to buy the textbook! I definitelu recommend her :)
She is an amazing professor! Her examples are very clear, and she has good ways to help you remember stuff. She participates in discussion boards and is very helpful!
Excellent prof, my favourite so far!
She's a great prof! I took both classes online with her and she is extremely helpful with the material. She posts good lecture notes that are full of detail and examples! I highly recommend her!
Amazing even for an online course. The material was very clear and the bi-weekly quizzesassignments were very helpful, there was even an answer key provided for them afterwards. Notes are very informative and provides videosinteractive material to make learning easier. Would definitely take again. Easy course if you understand the material.
Found the course very difficult. Her online notes basically cover everything you need to know, as the textbook for the course is extremely hard to understand. She is a fair prof, mark breakdown is good too.
There are a lot of quizzes to motivate you to stay on track, just do the reading and you should be fine.
Loved having her as a prof!
she rlly like 2 empphazsise her words like FIRE TRUCK. RED. CHERRY. YELLOW. COFFEEE. its p funny n makes me learn better thank u miss.
her lectures are so clear and all of the slides are posted online. she knows what she's talking about and clearly loves her job! the marking layout is a bit harsh, however, the three small assignments really boost your grade. i loved every class and was never bored!
Her lectures are very engaging and I found that time flew by. Her slides are so detailed that you really don't even have to read the textbook at all however it is good to prep before the lecture for reinforcement. Compared with my colleagues who had other psych profs, she seems like the best one at Laurier!
amazing prof very immersive lectures
Amazing prof! I would take a class with her again if I could. Cares a lot about the students and their success, makes lecture interactive so you understand the topics, and is very accessible via email.
Best prof ever. Not enough words can describe how good she is. Her lectures are very clear, easy to follow, and engaging. Because of her, I actually feel like I'm learning something and I get excited to go to class. Highly recommend taking one of her classes.
The material in this class is difficult as well as the terminology. Her online class consists of weekly postings and bi-weekly quizzes that range from 40-70 questions. Her lectures are heavily based on research, some have upwards of 10 studies mentioned and all of them involve rats. Safe to say I never want to read about a rat study again lol
She's really nice but the course material is one of the harder psych courses & her tests can be very confusing. The final was 100 questions in 2 hours, didn't have enough time to do as well as I could have.
She's really nice and definitely cares about her students. Her lectures were very informative and she used good examples. The exam was a bit difficult and can be a bit confusing but her assignments were pretty fair.
Very helpful and caring professor. Tough course material but it was presented in an easy to understand way. Cares about students and replies to emails quickly.
I took ps101 and ps102 and because of her, I found ps101 to be wayyyyy easier than ps102 with a different prof. Her exam questions were less confusing and slides had everything you need which made following along in lectures a lot easier for me. She also posts her slides and it seems like she genuinely wants you to do well in the course.
Zero empathy & is quite rude & dismissive. Completely gaslighted an accessible learning student about a mistake that she (the prof) made on the midterm (but admitted it to others??) and told me I should know the content better if I was that concerned...I have an A+... Very disappointing as I thought she was good in the beginning. Do not recommend
Dr. Olthof is amazing!! I have never had such a caring professor. She taught me cognitive neuroscience and it is not an easy course. However, the way that she laid out the course made it impossible to fall behind. There were many opportunities to do well as 40% of the grade is open book quizzes where she took 8 best out of 11. Highly recommend!!!!!
Dr. Olthof is rude and uncaring. I went to her on several occasions for guidance to which she provided 0 support and was extremely rude in her emails. Treated me like I was an idiot. Not to mention, she filed an incident report about me in regards to plagiarism which will stay on my record. You're basically teaching yourself with her as your prof
I really enjoyed taking her class, her lectures were very interesting however you will need to also read the textbook in order to do well on the quizzes. There are multiple chances for you to get marks, due to the quizzes and papers assigned. Would definitely recommend her.
Marks came from super easy open book quizzes and 2 1-pg papers. Marking of the 2 papers were bizarrely harsh - especially considering the vague instructions provided. However, never viewed a single lecture and could easily get A+ on all quizzes by skimming the textbook. Learned literally nothing but blessed my GPA and there was no final exam.
Pretty easy open book quizzes worth half your mark and with no time limit and multiple submissions. The papers are not too hard if you email her or go to office hours and discuss your progress she'll help a lot and you'll do well. Honestly the easiest course I've taken.
Her course has no exam or midterm, all projects that you just use the textbook and her recorded slides to answer. Her grading rubric is a bit unclear ( I advice you to do all weekly quizzes even though only 7 are counted) since her "bonus" 8% is apart of the 100% So if you don't get 70% or higher on all quizzes, highest mark you can receive is 92%
I felt like this prof was out to get us. Rude and unprofessional when I emailed for help on an assignment that she made a mistake on. Misleading syllabus with several "bonus" items that are actually calculated into your final grade. Has a weird grudge against ALC students. Do yourself a favour and stay away from this professor.
My first year at Laurier, took PS101 as an elective, and I found Dr. Olthof to be the best prof I had. She is super enthusiastic about the course and her lectures are extremely helpful as she stays away from explaining things scientifically, instead using real life examples, and making the content easy to understand. Great prof, made me love psych.
She is very nice and she even rounded our grade up. Her lessons are GREAT and you do not need the textbook at all. She is also amazing at explaining the course content which would otherwise have been super hard to grasp. I wish she was a little more accessible since it was an online course but it is alright.
She is such a gem, I loved her lectures so much. She gives a lot of chapter assignments which are easy mark boosters. She has such a positive energy and its evident when listening to her lectures even through a screen.
funny prof who did her best to entertain students in long lectures due to covid, only flaw is midterm/final exam consisted of some questions taken from unimportant details in textbook, overall def recommend!
Dr. Olthof is amazing! Her lectures are very detailed and I rarely used my textbook. I love that our grades were not based only on midterms and exams. She does chapter quizzes and other smaller assignments. She genuinely wants her students to do well in the course. I highly recommend taking her class if you have the chance!
her weekly quizzes were straight out of the textbook and her slides, easy 100% if you read the textbook. she only actually graded one thing and she was pretty strict. got a 6/10 on something I put a lot of work into. the exam was pretty standard. overall pretty soft course.
Super cute lecture slides but there like 3 hours long when the info could be summed up in 45 minutes.
very nice and enthusiatic professor. Clearly cares about students, super sweet. 10/10 recommend taking this class !!
The prof has chapter assignments for each lecture and although they can be annoying to do they help your mark A LOT. The lectures were very long but i mostly blame that on the online environment, I would've loved to have Olthof in person! The course did demands studying and the exams are tough.
Unwilling to meet outside of office hours Unfair and arbitrary grading of group projects Unclear expectations of assignments and will penalize harshly without opportunity for redemption Unhelpful, does not care about your academic success
28% of your grade is based on online assignments (multiple choice/true false).
ambiguous test questions and refuses to help you understand or discuss things, very rude and unhelpful and genuinely disinterested in helping students grow.
I had this prof for PS101 and PS260 and for any exam she would always give me a B. When I ask where I went wrong, she would not explain, just say look at the textbook. Does not tell me what I got wrong in the midterm to improve myself she says that is academic misconduct for me to know that information. Does not care at all.
Professor Olthof made PS101 interesting and easy to keep up with. She didn't go too fast or too slow with lecture material and added some bits of information into the lectures that are not present on the slides. Chapter assignments can be done using the powerpoint slides and the midterm and final exam are somewhat based off these assignments too.
fair professor, very knowledgeable in her field, lots of tests, makes class fun and engaging.
The professor was extremely unprofessional, and disrespectful towards groups following their presentations. I felt embarrassed for the groups that I watched, who had to stand up in front of the whole lecture hall and be completely disrespected by their professor in front of their peers. I would never take a class by this professor again.
Lectures very helpful, gave examples and fully explained most concepts well. One major assignment and other weekly chapter assignments that, while they are sometimes long, are relatively easy and can usually be answered with lecture slides. Professor was available for questions and responded well. Lecture slides with audio are also made available.
W prof
Actually cared about what students asked.
Super engaging lectures and entertaining speaker. My preferred psych prof.
Loved her lectures!! never got bored of her talking.
chill asf
Decent prof, gives many different assignments not worth a lot so if you do poorly on an assignment it isn't difficult to recover your grade. Lectures finish early and most of your learning comes from the text book
I only went to about half of the lectures. Her slides were extremely detailed, and she practically read off of them It is important that you read the textbook in addition to the lecture as you will be tested on all the content. I did not like the group project aspect, it was hard to find times to meet as everyone had different schedules and work.
W prof, read the textbook
Anneke is a great prof! She loves group work so if you don't then I wouldn't recommend
Very good prof, interesting lectures
She is a great lecturer, but unprofessional with students when emailed, and will take student responsibility points off for asking for clarification. It's unfortunate because I really enjoyed going to her classes, but it was very clear she picks favourites and doesn't really care for student success/support.
Great professor, highly engaging and gets her large classes involved! Takes the time to answer any questions and sets you up for success! Would for sure take her classes again!
She's a great and funny teacher.
Such an engaging and hilarious prof. Generally really made me interested in psychology. Marks really fair undoing your lowest assignment and test mark. Tests are medium-hard but they were online, which might have not been smart on her end. Would definitely take again.
Rounds up grades, gives 2% bonus marks, great lectures. My only regret with this class is not showing up more.
Great professor. She is clearly very passionate about psychology. Her lectures are well planned, entertaining and easy to follow. While her slides were good, a lot of the tests/assignments were textbook heavy, so read it. She also gives out a lot of easy extra credit and drops your lowest marks which can easily help your grade. I'd recommend!
Lectures were entertaining and engaging. She is passionate about psychology and is always happy to answer questions.
The best first year psych prof!! She is so funny and entertaining. Her lecture slides are easy to follow and explain things in a decent amount of detail in case you miss the lecture. The test & exam questions are pretty much the same as the chapter homework assignments. Overall best prof I had for my first semester!
Anneke is FANTASTIC at giving lectures. Her lectures were interesting and she'll often give interactive examples that help you remember things better. There were so many smaller assignments that were not difficult which makes the other assignments worth less. There is a 2% bonus if you don't ask stupid questions. Test/exam format is bad though.
Great professor. Lectures are fun and engaging. Weekly quizzes were open book and you can make multiple attempts. The plagiarism quiz and library scavenger hunt were a great way to get familiar with university resources and expectations.
Loved her for PS101 but regretting PS102. She complained about students using ChatGPT and changed the curriculum to be purposely harder. Made 75% of our grade come from the exam and a tedious group assignment. It feels like she did it on purpose to punish her sem 1 students and doing this made her the worst choice out of all the waterloo102 profs.
I really do like her as a professor but it feels like she completely rug-pulled all the students who are taking her both semesters. Because she accused the class of cheating on PRACTISE/STUDY assignments. Her justification was "We were supposed to struggle to complete them" and because some students didn't, she put it all on the exam instead...
Professor forces you to use a lockdown browser in class for tests, with no option for paper tests if you're broke or don't have access to a laptop.
You really can't ask her any basic or clarification questions or she'll get mad and respond in a very passive aggressive manner. Considering she's teaching first year students, i'd assume she would be a lot more understanding and caring but she's not. Regardless her lectures are engaging and enjoyable, which is nice.
inconsiderate
engaging/interesting lectures, you can tell she genuinely loves teaching as she always adds humour, examples and stories into the content. course is not hard, the lecture slides are enough to complete chapter homework and study for tests (textbook is not needed imo). would definitely have her as a prof again!
Queen, I had her in 2023 for both PS101 and PS102 and she gives lots of opportunities to bump your grade up. Midterms and exams were not super hard, obviously u need to study the material because its very recall based questions. But shes super funny and loud
She removed all practice/study assignments from previous courses because "kids weren't struggling with them" and made the final exam 60% of your grade. i personally believe that its lazy to do such a thing, and seems like they just want to grade as few things as possible. i see why so many switched!
a group project and a mc exam worth 60%... wonder why she's the only prof to do that!
DO NOT TAKE. She punished her sem 2 class for some students in sem 1 not "struggling through homework" and using chat gpt by giving us a 60% final exam a 20% midterm and one assignment all year. It felt like an abuse of power and almost like she was trying to make people fail. It was probably the worst experience in a class it felt very unfair.
I would rather eat nails than take one of her exams again.
I took Dr.Olthof for PS101 it was good. Exam was 40% of your grade. However, PS102 was the worst course I have ever taken because of her. The final exam was 60% I finished it an hour ago. Barely anything on the exam was taught everything was random info from the textbook. Don't take PS102 with her if you wanna make it to second year Psychology!
Are you a Psych major? Do you want to make it to second-year Psych? THEN DONT TAKE ANNEKE FOR PS102! Unless you want an exam worth 60% that has nothing relevant you learned in it.
who in the right mind makes an final exam worth 60%? professor olthof. dont take her course
60% final exam all coming from random facts that were never talked about in class. We were all told 80% of the exam would be from the lectures but there was maybe 5 / 75 questions that could possibly be in her slides. Want to go to second year and not have to take summer school stay away from Anneke!
Completely AVOID her for any psych course. Not only was the final 60%, the questions were ABSOLUTE NONSENSE. Not only did she say that they would be mostly from lectures (which only 3 of the 75 questions were), but she did not even curve the exam at all. I'm sure the class average is horrible. Not sure what we did to get punished like this
Completely ignore all the old positive reviews about her. She decided she wants a change of personality this semester. Which means never take her courses again. Good luck.
Do you want a future? A good university experience? Maybe a chance at med school? Don't take this prof
Just horrible
Avoid at all costs! Made a final exam worth 60%, that said final exam was made up of questions that had nothing to do with course material discussed in lectures. Questions on the exam were also misleading as well as misspelt! She quite literally set up every student for failure. 0/5.
Final was worth 60% and none of the questions were like the 200 practice ones, which wasted 2 hours of study time. Prof claimed they'd be similar to the final—she lied, not one was similar. One assignment to boost your grade was marked by 15 random students in the course, not the prof, making it unfair and unprofessional.
How is she going to complain about students “not struggling” with the chapter homework's last semester when she made them open book and gave us unlimited attempts?? She was great for 101 but screwed everyone over for 102. Exam was terrible and didn't even cover the actual important content. She structured 102 terribly!!
The exam was horrible, and she can't teach to save her life
Never taking a class with her again. Thought her teaching was good until the final, which had almost no relevant material from the lectures. The one assignment we had besides a midterm/final was graded by other students, which made no sense.
A 60% final with almost no relevant material from the lectures. Practice questions that she provided were useless too, and nothing we were actually taught showed up anywhere on the final. Try to avoid her at all costs.
DON'T TAKE. she removed all homework assignments as students did it find it challenging enough since everyone got good grades last semester, very unfair. exam was worth 60% and all her lectures were irrelevant and impossible to study. she made it group projects get marked by other groups, to minimize her own workload, crazy! run far away!!!!
Very quirky, lectures are entertaining/memorable. Diverges from the topic, and uses outdated language (she used the R slur a bunch not in an edu. context). Other than discussion posts (\3%) and a student bonus (2%, and often removed for asking questions), there's one group project, and the exams (midterm 20+%, and final worth upwards of 60%).
thought she was funny and entertaining at first, but when it comes down to the actual work, she is not there to support or help you. i reached out to her and she completely lacked any empathy for me despite me being an engaged student in lectures. 60% final with completely random info, a group project w randoms and a shared grade. run while you can
She just wants to be cool rather then do a good job. The group work project has no boundaries and is a waste of time. office hours are challenging as she bases them on her commute or some guys schedule, not student focussed. She uses old ways to approach learning and misses how to support students with accommodations.
She will either be your favourite prof or you will outright despise her. Good luck!
Anneke is a really nice professor! I enjoyed my time in both her classes, PS101/102. She's a fair grader her videos are very helpful for studying. She has a YouTube channel called 5 minute psych. If you want to do well make sure you take a look there! It's a really straightforward class, just pay attention show up to lectures and you'll do great.
Amazing prof and lectures, very engaging. No midterms but we had a 45% final. There was also a group project worth a lot which I did not enjoy since 8% of your grade was what your group members rated you. The review assignments were easy marks but very long with 200 point quizzes and 2 hours to do them. Loved the teaching tho and she was so sweet!
She was a good prof makes her lectures interesting.
Good intro psych course. Prof was engaging and although she essentially reads off the slides, she is very engaging. There's one very random easy group project, no midterm, and an exam worth 45%, as well as a lot of low-weighted assignments/quizzes. I never touched the textbook, save your money and find it as a pdf online just incase. Overall great!
Very easy Intro to Psych class. Lectures are genuinely compelling and she'll find ways to ensure everyone is learning while still having fun.
