She was an outstanding teacher!
Very easy class. She was an easy grader. She was more concerned with you learning to speak in front of people rather than the content of your speech. She was helpful and more hands on rather than lecturing. She was great!
Winston is a really easy professor, but can be really be annoyingly sarcastic at times. She doesn't assign that much out of class work and gives you chances for extra credit, which with this easy of a class you shouldn't need.
Great class. I would highly recommend her to anyone interested in communications, or even someone who wants to practice biz communication. She is a professional about her subject. I can't imagine a more qualified comm240 teacher. One of my favorite professors!
She is very liberal and opinionated. Not too hard, easier than most I hear.
Dr. Winston is by far the best teacher of all time. She is not an easy grader you have to work for your grade, but she is so helpful. I used to DREAD public speaking, but thanks to her I now LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
She was a good teacher, but dont do any projects on Baseball because she doesn't pay attention. Do NOT miss, she took twenty points off for missing for my Grandfathers funeral!!! She was not vary fair on grading and nickeled and dimed you to death!!! Pretty much if you can speak like OBAMA you will do fine!
nicest teacher
She was really easy, it would be hard not to get an A. Overall good class, but frustrating professor. She treated the class like a high school course and acted somewhat unprofessional at times.
Great teacher for the subject matter. I was terrified of public speaking but she makes the environment very comfortable and gets the class well acquainted with eachother. Speeches were easy as long as you prepared. No tests, and decent midterm and final! Attendance is mandatory don't mess around with it. Overall great class for public speaking
She is a really good teacher. One of the best I have had thus far. I would definitely take her class!
She was a decent teacher. It was really easy to make an A in her class. She is often moody and she definitely favors some students over others. The speeches aren't bad and you get really comfortable with the other students in the class. If you don't like tests or quizzes, you should take this class because we didn't have any.
Ms. Winston is very friendly. She makes you feel at ease with public speaking. There are very few assignments and it should be easy to make an A in the class. Just be sure to get there on time! If you're nervous about public speaking, this is the class for you. Seriously, she makes you comfortable.
Fantastic professor. Makes the atmosphere comfortable and always very helpful outside of class. No quizzes or tests, just prove to her that you really are trying to improve your speaking ability, and grade will be fine.
She is a good teacher and her class is not very hard. No tests or quizzes! there are quizzes on the syllabus...but she ended up just giving us 100s for those. Make sure to go over the speech checklists and have everything included because she will count off alot if you forget! She says to buy the book but dont!! i never opened mine.
Excellent professor. Very knowledgable and passionate about the topic. I would recommend her 100%. Coming into the class I hated speeches and got really nervous but she makes everyone in the class friends making you feeling comfortable speaking in front of the class.
I would definitely recommend her. She is a great professor, and I learned so much this semester. I would recommend her to anyone! Also, don't buy the book, it is completely unnecessary. The first day she says you need it, and I brought it to class the first month, in class or out of class, you don't need it.
Awesome! Very helpful and passionate.
She was a great teacher that I will remember throughout my college career. She really cares about her students and she wants them to do well. Dr. Winston will give you an A if you put in a bit of work.. don't flake on research and you should be fine. Don't buy the textbook either.
Fabulous! Love Ms. Annette. Even if you're already comfortable with public speaking she can teach you SO much. If you're not comfortable she makes the classroom feel like a safe zone filled with family so that you can become comfortable. Workload is very light but don't skimp on research and DO your work to get an A. A no nonsense prof but sweet!
She was a very good speech teacher! But attendance is absolutely Mandatory!! She takes points off your grade if you miss. I am terrified of public speaking and only took this class because of the Gen Ed requirement but she makes speaking seem less scary. In this class we only had to do 4 or 5 speeches all semester which isn't too bad.
I love her!
She makes this class interesting and easier to make a speech. I love her! No exams, only two open book quizes
I was not a fan of speaking but improved over the semester. Grades tough on individual speeches but easier on team presentations. Go to class and you'll do fine. The majority of her classes are enjoyable. I highly recommend her.
She's really sweet, I liked her a lot but she is a bit of a tough grader and does play favourites a little bit so get on her good side and stay there! The team stuff is pretty easy and the speeches aren't too bad. It was always interesting because she made it that way. I used the book twice: both for the open book quizzes.
Mrs. Winston was an amazing teacher. She has very strong opinions sometimes, but was a very generous grader. I wasn't wild about speaking, but loved her class because she made it very enjoyable. Would take her for speech if at all possible.
I have to admit I didn't like her at first but she grows on you. She's a fun and interesting person but DONT get on her bad side. And she has favorites... She's more than willing to help if she likes you... while I wasn't the best at speaking it wasn't difficult to get an A in the class
I love Mrs. Winston! From day one when I walked into class and she was jammin' to Adele, I knew the class would be great. She is incredibly approachable to students and is always willing to help with any problems her students might have- both in and out of class. I dramatically improved as a speaker in her class. I highly recommend the class!
She is passionate about what she does. I had her for an 8 am, and she was chipper and energetic for every class. The only criticism I have is that she does play favorites a bit, and she will grill you with tough questions if you do a topic she disagrees with. However, she is an objective grader and an overall pleasant person. I enjoyed her class.
Very energetic in class and loved to talk. She was a pretty lenient grader, but really informed credibility. She asked really tough questions after your speech, ESPECIALLY if she disagrees with your topic. If you choose a topic she likes/favors then you're golden. She is very approachable and is always willing to help with your speech. used text 2x
Really helpful and easy to understand Just do exactly what she says and you won't have trouble. Great personality.
This class requires a good amount of work if you want to do well- you will learn a lot of useful information though! Mrs. Winston was da bomb.
really helpful, grades leniently, and the class is surprisingly interesting.
The class is surprisingly interesting, and she is always in a good mood. The grading is really fair, but you can be penalized hard if you don't follow rules.
I really don't like public speaking, but this class made me much better at it. She's a great teacher, as she knows alot about public speaking and the class environment is really good.
She really enjoys her job, and she is very willing to help. All you have to do is follow the grading rubrics, and it is a very easy A. If you do not follow instructions, then you won't do well. Make sure to attend class and be interested. Also, write speeches in advance. Then, you can practice with her beforehand. I would definitely recommend her!
I have mixed feelings about this professor. On one hand, she knows her stuff & is able to help you improve as a speaker. On the other hand she has favorites - they can give the most god awful (last minute) speech and make an A while her least favorites work their butt off, have amazing speeches and make a B. Take her if you have no other options.
Excellent overall professor. While the subject matter wasn't my favorite, Dr. Winston still made the class interesting and fun for me. If you work hard, come to class everyday, and are well practiced for your speeches then you will do very well in the class.
This has been my favorite class so far at UT. Winston is funny and knowledgeable. She grades pretty hard on speeches but it is not difficult to make an A in the class if you put forth effort on all assignments.
I LOVED Dr. Winston! We all have our doubts about public speaking, but this class was truly great. She was the first professor I had who actually cared that we learn. She's not a pushover or an easy A, though. I learned so much in this class. Wow! Take CMST 240!
She really does help you become a better speaker and communicator! Attendance is by far what is the most difficult, if you miss more than 3 classes a semester, she starts taking a ton on points off, even if you're sick.
She is a nice woman, but no matter what she says, SHE IS A HARD GRADER. I had never taken speech before and it was surprising to see how hard she was on the students. She knows what she is talking about and she is very helpful.
This class was mainly rough because she is a very tough grader. Don't expect 100's on anything you do. She was very knowledgable but not very clear sometimes on the expectations/ due dates of assignments. Mid-term and final are online and open-book. 2 major speeches, 1 smaller introductory speech. 2 group projects. A couple of smaller assignments.
She is EASILY the most condescending person I've ever met in my life. She's very opinionated, and she has a tendency to belittle students whether she realizes it or not. The assignments were all on blackboard the first day, and that's essentially all the instruction you'll get. She barely talks about the assignments in class. Average class.
Attendance is mandatory with a penalty after 3 absences regardless of excuses. There was little homework besides the research for giving an informed speech, but she doesn't take it easy on people with a fear of public speaking. There are 2 group projects and other assignments which can raise your grade. The midterm and final are online.
Since it is her job to teach students how to communicate effectively and professionally in the business world, she sure does come across as VERY rude. She is a nice woman, but make sure to get on her good side. If you do what she asks, you will have no problem. Make sure to come to class, you can't miss any more than 3. Exams are open book online.
Mrs. Winston really knows what she is talking about. I thought the class was enjoyable and would definitely take it again. She doesn't give tests except for a midterm and final, but those are online and straight out of the text book. Other than the two speeches and two group projects she doesn't assign homework.
She is very helpful, if you ask for it. She has so much experience & she really knows what she is talking about. Definitely go to class. There are two tests, but not because she wants to give them, but because the department head wrote the book & makes you buy the code. She's great, class is great, I learned a lot.
Great teacher. Gives good feedback and has a great class environment. Group projects are fun and not graded too hard but you have to prepare a lot for individual presentations.
Mrs. Winston is a very good teacher. She does a great job of preparing you for speeches and you will actually learn and become a better speaker. This isn't an easy class because she does grade pretty tough. However, she gives detailed grading criteria. The only downside is she does like to play favorites some. Also not a big greek life fan.
Mrs. Winston is a good teacher. I felt very prepared for every speech I gave and I actually left her class feeling like I learned something. She gives good feedback and is very accessible if you have any questions. Not much outside work besides a few assignments and preparing for your speeches. Also, the group projects she assigns are fun!
It has been one of the best classes that I have taken at the UT. She teaches you exactly how to do the speeches and you walk out actually knowing something. There's not a lot of homework, but when there is, it's worth quite a bit of points. Make sure you're in class bc attendance matters. Overall loved her! Such a sweet lady.
Professor Winston is an amazing teacher. If you fear public speaking I urge you to take her. She makes each one of her students feel extremely comfortable. If you practice and take her advice you will receive the grade you deserve.
Great teacher, easy class. I left feeling way more confident presenting in front of a group at the end of the semester. By the end of the semester you know your class well, Winston holds you to account on the assignments but there are only a few.
I LOVE MS. WINSTON!!! BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!!
Professor Winston is alright. She doesnt grade hard which is nice for speeches but man she complains a lot about her classes. She expects a high level of professionalism obviously because its a business speech class but for those who arent business majors its kinda dumb to expect that. However she is probably the best option for a speech class
She gives amazing feedback. She is a tough grader especially during presentations . Make sure you get the small details correct because she keeps a close eye on those things. She has provided me with a lot of knowledge for the future though.
I love this class. I took it to fulfill a gen ed and I am so happy I did. You give three individual speeches, and two group speeches/presentations. Both the midterm and final are online and you are able to take each test two times. Follow her guidelines and you'll make a good grade. (She takes attendance every time so do not bother skipping)
She was one of those professors that some days I liked and some days I didn't. However she's very intelligent and respectable. Overall I enjoyed her class. Just don't skip class.
I LOVE Mrs. Winston!!! She seems very intimidating on the syllabus, but once you get to class she is an incredible professor! She is very accomplished and knowledgable on public speaking and professionalism. She cares for her students and is a true inspiration! The assignments are pretty easy and you have to speak about 5 times in the semester.
Mrs. Winston is easily one of the best teachers I have ever had! You can tell she truly cares about all her students and wants to see them succeed. She is always willing to meet outside of class time to help. She does have high expectations of her students, but that is because she knows she has taught you well and knows what you are capable of.
Mrs. Winston has a lot to offer if you are willing to listen and understand the content of the class. She not only teaches how to give a speech but gives real-life, valuable advice. She is a tough grader, but if you try and work for it, she can see that. I really improved myself from this class.
Annette is complicated. On one hand, she's a good professor and is an interesting lecturer, and her assignments always have a learning purpose. But her personality is just not the greatest. she can be rude and unempathetic at times and inserts her personal opinions unnecessarily, but overall she's a nice enough lady who has good stuff to teach
Dr. Winston is pretty chill. I turned in a few assignments a bit late, and she didn't count me off. She tries really hard to make everyone feel comfortable, and I did feel well-supported during the course.
Mrs. Winston is hands down the pickiest teacher I have ever had. When choosing a topic for a speech, she will turn it down just because she doesn't want to hear it. Don't depend on emailing her questions because it'll take her forever or she won't respond. This should be an easy gen ed but is stressful due to her unnecessary pickiness and critique.
A good professor shouldn't let his/her opinions get in the way of the success of students. Choosing the wrong topic or presenting it in the wrong way can hurt your grade. She is not good about responding to emails and doesn't clarify deadlines or how to do assignments. This class shouldn't be a requirement b/c it's common sense and adds to stress.
Though I think she would be a lot better in person, and by no means is she a horrible person, she is not very helpful whatsoever. She does not respond to emails, does not give detailed feedback, and is unnecessarily harsh when it comes to speech idea feedback. She made a group project due in a week during online class and if you have COVID oh well.
Expectations are not clear on assignments. If you're an athlete you're fine, but anyone else- NO mercy. Course calendar and her word of mouth never match up but she gets upset when you ask for clarification as if you "should have known that". Some days she can be nice but others she's very rude. If this class is required, request someone else.
Professor Winston was great. I am terrible at public speaking and got an A easily. There are three main speeches with plenty of buffer assignments to boost your grade. Having this class online was a little more confusing finding criteria on canvas, but Professor Winston is actually really nice and will offer help if you speak up in the zoom.
Professor Winston genuinely cares about you future. She challenged my thoughts to make me a more complete student that is ready for the professional world. If you care about improving your skills you will learn a lot and walk out challenging yourself to look at things from the opposite perspective. In addition, she got to know me as a person!
Prof Winston is a solid choice if you can follow directions. She is clear about what she wants and it is easy to do well in the class if you do it. Otherwise she does not cut you much slack and expects you to do your part. Really nice and helpful prof if you try in the class. I imagine in person would be a lot harder tho because online was easy
She might seem intimidating but she really does care about you being successful
She's very strict on attendance but if you can get past that and her scary syllabus, she really does care about her students. She has a habit of grading harsher on speeches that go against her personal beliefs, but overall I've really come to enjoy her class.
Mrs. Winston is one of the best professors that I've had at UTK. It's obvious how much she cares about her students and wants us to succeed, not only in her class but in the future. If you have to take communications, take her, I promise you'll learn so much from her and enjoy it in the process.
Dr. Winston has been my favorite teacher in my time at UT by far. She genuinely makes an effort to get to know her students on a personal level. She offers help quite frequently and her advice is clear and concise for the most part. Attendance is pretty important though. All in all, she is a fair grader, a great help, and an even better teacher
Professor Winston was such an amazing professor! Her motivational speech to my class was absolutely so super sweet leaving everyone in awe.
Dr. Winston is one of the best professors I've ever had. She did a great job of making us feel really comfortable and tight-knit which helped a lot of people with speech anxiety. If you show up and do the assignments and make it clear that you put in effort, you will do well. You won't even want to skip. I'm definitely going to miss this class.
I loved Mrs. Winston! She helped me develop confidence in my speaking so that I became more comfortable with each speech I gave. She only allows 3 absences, but you can make up a missed class by attending one of her earlier or later classes (I personally never had trouble with attendance). She's one of my favorite professors I've had at UT so far.
Professor Winston is not only an accomplished person outside of the University, but is also an accomplished Professor. She truly cares about her students, especially the students that care. She is an extraordinary women, and is passionate about her career. Her lectures are so relatable to outside life and the workplace.
Professor Winston is the best professor I have had so far. She forms a bond between her students in class so you are not that nervous for your speeches. Her syllabus is scary and attendance is mandatory, but by the end of the semester I would not only go to class but look forward to it.
Professor Winston is such a caring teacher, she loves all her students and wants us to do well. I highly recommend trying to get Professor Winston for this course. Public Speaking can be super intimidating but she makes the class so comfortable.
Annette is great for public speaking. At the first day, she seems really restricted, but then it turned out that she is so great. If you do not take her for public speaking, it is a big loss. She is an easy grader and I was honestly afraid of this course and did not expect an A, but I got it with her. It is the only class that I literally enjoyed.
The thought of public speaking was pretty daunting. Coach Winston seems like a picky professor at the beginning, but by the end she will probably be your favorite professor. I suffer from horrible speech anxiety but Coach Winston helped me through it. I looked forward to almost every class. She's my favorite professor at UT. Take CMST240 with her!
Prof. Winston is such a caring teacher, she loves all her students and wants us to do well. I highly recommend trying to get Prof. Winston for this course. Easy grader. You get a lot of information from this class. you can have confidence in your speech. She is very cool, funny, and very helpful. Favorite prof.
Professor Winston's class was hands down my favorite this past semester. Seems intimidating in the syllabus, but is actually one of the kindest, sweetest and most hilarious professors on campus. Genuinely wants to see you succeed and if you put in the work it will pay off. Attendance is key so show up to class and participate!
Don't be deterred by the syllabus in the beginning! Professor Winston means business but was easily my favorite professor of the year. Easily the most stressful class for me only because I hate public speaking, but I learned so much. You get to know the class well too.
Professor Winston is a really great lecturer. She is super funny and makes the class feel very comfortable. My class was really small and everyone knew each other by the end of semester. This made speeches and projects so much easier.
She knows what she is talking about, but I did not enjoy her class. The only part I will miss is my classmates. If you email her a question, she often sends you a vague answer. She says the dress for speeches is business causal, but counts off if you don't dress professional enough. You never know what will happen each day.
Overqualified for this position- but she's retiring after the spring. You'll get an A If you do ur work and prepare ur speeches. But, she does have favorites which is great when ur one of them but she can be rude if ur not. If she doesn't like ur speech idea she will tell u no- due dates change, doesn't answer email. Don't miss class= an A
Do NOT take this class. Professor Winston is the worst professor I have ever had at UTK. She is an extreme narcissist who expects her students to read her mind to know how she wants assignments done. She does not respond to emails professionally or in a timely manner. Very vague guidelines. Do not take this class if you value your mental health.
Ms. Winston really cares about building relationships with her students and wants everyone to succeed. The class was not too difficult, but the speeches require practice. She can be a tough grader but it's not hard to do well in the class. Majority of grade comes from speeches and projects not exams. She is strict on attendance. Great class though!
