Very hard class ...big project that she grades very hard as well as very difficult midterms and finals. Not clear about due dates and impossible quizzes. She does start giving out some extra points towards the end though
she is mean and grades really hard
Prof. Dupal is great, she may come off a little strict, but I really enjoyed her class! She is a tough grader but if you go to her office hours she is more than willing to help you! Don't be afraid to take her, you learn a lot in her class and I found it really interesting!
Professor Dupal is not the kind of teacher that she is portrayed to be on this site. While she may not be an easy A, she is very knowledgeable and is willing to help students as much as possible. Take advantage of office hours and do the readings and you shouldn't struggle too much. She does talk about Canada A LOT though...
While she might not be the easiest 241 teacher, she is the one that is very interested in seeing you get into the major. Go to office hours, talk to her, and she'll help you in anyway possible. Quizes are from your notes so read the book and pay attention in class!!!
She is a great teacher and always willing to help. She wants all her students to do good. Her class isn't easy but it's not impossible by any means. SHe likes to really critique your speeches but the feed back she gives you is suparb and in-depth.
Annick is fantastic. She's a very interesting teacher and is very personable and approachable. She's very clear on what she expects from her students and how she grades them. She is really knowledgeable on Communication and has so many amazing life stories and experiences to share. Great person, great class, would highly recommend.
She is a great teacher and an amazing person. She actually cares about her students and hopes they take something from this class, even though she knows most people don't want to be in this gen ed class. Also i can personally say she has made me a better and more organized speaker. Take her you won't regret it! You'll learn alot if you want to!
Has absolutely no regard for handing back grades in a timely manner. Takes 3-4 weeks for you to receive a paper back, in the meantime another paper is due. And makes it clear that you're not allowed to ask about the status of your grade either. She's a careful grader at best - but the amount of time it takes is ridiculous to say the least.
I LOVED ANNICK! She really really tries to keep the class engaged. She is really cute. She is a tough grader in her comments but the grades reflect your effort. She really helps you out at the end of the year with your grade because she understands foreign language is hard. She is really great. Take her!
Very nice and very happy to teach. She was very helpful. She focuses a lot on pronunciation. Tests are fairly easy if you study.
Dupal is the BEST. Unless you are dumb and cannot follow directions. For pecha kucha, or anything, follow the instructions and practice and you will do great! Sounds simple but I watched many people ignore easy directions and probably fail but that's their own faults!! She is so nice, funny, and super helpful and clear and direct. LOVE HER.
I had Dupal as 1 of 3 240 lecture professors,& for my scom 241 lab teacher. Grades a little hard, but if you go & talk to her in office hours, she's more sympathetic, but be ready to back yourself up. Takes a while to get grades back & talks about Canada A LOT. Read/take notes in lecture for quizzes in lab, 2 easy papers, really practice pecha kucha.
Annick is seriously an all around great professor. She was funny, a tough but fair grader, and had our best interests at heart. Not sure about for Com classes, but she is also a great french teacher!
LOVE Annick, she is tough but fair in her grading and she is SO funny and interesting to listen to during class. She constantly keeps me entertained. The class is tough but she is so willing to help and genuinely wants her students to do well.
This lady is great. She's been teaching the class for years and years and it really shows. She tries to keep the class engaged and doesn't lecture your ears off. I didn't think I would like the class, but she made it bearable.
Dupal is a pretty harsh grader. If you don't already know (pretty much) everything about communication theories you will definitely struggle. The pecha kucha project was a complete nightmare.
Annick is really there to help you and wants you to succeed. I had her for both 240241 and she really made the class easier for me. If you want an easy class, don't take this one. You have to work hard to get the grade you want. She was really friendly for office hours and gave great feedback for the papers (only 2 or 3) and our final project.
My group in gcom was a little rough but she was very easy to talk to and helped me succeed in class. She was overall very smart and reminded me of my mom :)
She is rushing through the textbook and you will get troubled when you didn't study 2 hours a day. She always says we could easily figure it out the exam questions but it is difficult to trust her as which is not what she said. Avoid it at all the cost if you don't want to hurt your grade.
She ranked really high just because of her communication classes. Otherwise, don't take a risk of her French classes. She is teaching as an advanced level and I almost ended up with F. This class is far more behind the level of 231. Avoid at all the cost!
Do not judge her by looking at her friendliness. She is hilarious but will stab you at the back with her exams. Then, all of her group quizzes are also difficult and never speak in English while teaching, French itself is complicated, and she graded everything in a weird way. Avoid it at all the cost!
There being said, she is a great professor, once you have a good foundation of French. I would rather take her class for 231 level but 101 drive me crazy as she is teaching as if we were the native speakers. Test are crazy and would surely fail if you don't have a really good background of French. Avoid it at all the cost.
She made an easy class tough as higher level of French. Studying a bunch of vocabularies and grammars in a day is just impossible for a beginner. I have attended some foreign language classes in JMU but those were a good GPA booster just because we got a chance to understand a language effectively without rushing through it.
Dupal was a great teacher! She is a tough grader, but she isn't unfair. Do the work and practice outside of the classroom and you'll succeed. I wish Annick was teaching 102!
I absolutely loved Annick for Scom122! She's a great professor. She's very interactive and funny. When we would take notes, she would try to connect her (funny) life moments to whatever we were learning, so we would have a better understanding of it. She's very flexible with when things a due. She's a fair grader, gives good feedback. Take her!
Great professor! Loved every minute of that class! Lectures aren't boring. Gives helpful feedback for your next speeches. My communication skills and public speaking skills are a lot better thanks to her! She definitely made my first semester of college! Told all my friends to take her, so you should take her. She's is not average. Better than that
I loved Annick! She is so funny and I loved coming to her class every day!! She really wants to help and keeps the class engaged at all times, with wonderful answers to all questions. TAKE HER FOR 241, you won't regret it!
Dupal is definitely the hardest teacher for scom 240 and 241. Dupal is the hardest grader out of the 3 teachers. Aside from that she also has inflexible office hours. However she is very funny and presents material well.
For the group project she doesn't let you pick your group mates or the theories. She takes FOREVER to grade (turned in a paper before Thanksgiving and got it back after my final). She's not that hard of a grader but takes off random points. She's funny and kind of nice but kind of awkward, very rude and condescending. Would not take her again.
I loved Annick! She really cares about her students and gives it to you straight. Don't be afraid to talk to her. She cares more about the effort you put in over how well you understand the information. Would highly recommend and take again. Just pay attention in class and you'll be golden.
Dupal is the hardest professor for SCOM 240&241. If you want to pass the class, DO NOT take her. I did all of the readings, never missed class, and studied and I struggled. She is very unclear on her expectations/instructions. Her 241 quizzes are very specific so you have to take really good notes. She is also a tough grader for papers. Don't take!
Annick is the honest to god best. So glad i took her for SCOM. She's absolutely hilarious and knows her stuff. She's there for you when you talk to her about anything. TAKE HER! TOUGH GRADER THOUGH!! WILL GO 0-100 SO QUICK YOU WON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HIT YOU BECAUSE OLIVE OIL IS IN GARNIER SO "WHAT'S NEW?" AND WILL LEAVE YOU CRYING BUT STILL LOVE HER.
Annick is an amazing professor! She gives extra credit opportunities throughout the semester and doesn't give that much work. Her lectures are always interesting and makes you enjoy the class a lot more with her jokes. Annick knows her stuff and is definitely not messing around when it comes to grading. Would reccommend taking her for SCOM 123!
Can be intimidating at first, but you'll quickly learn how kind and funny she is. She really cares about you doing well and is really helpful and approachable. You definitely have to put in a lot of work, but she's fair with her expectations and work load. Exams and quizzes aren't easy, but they aren't impossible if you make an effort.
Annick Dupal talks about Canada... a lot. Prepare for that. She is a tough grader and can be pretty harsh sometimes. The quizzes are tough but it's open note. Exams are not as hard as the quizzes. Pecha kucha can be pretty intimidating, but it's not so bad. She is open to looking over your papers but you have to have it done fairly early to do so.
Dupal is an awesome teacher. She makes the topics relatable and tells hilarious stories. I am not a good public speaker but I ended up with an A- in the class. Gives a TON of extra credit. Great teacher, take her!!
Annick gets too bad a rep because she is a tough grader, but she has high standards for her students and tries really hard to make that criteria clear. Her office is a disaster so don't be too surprised if she loses your paper. Some advice: make 3 copies for every one you print. She does hold convenient office hours and i would stop by w/ q's.
Not the easiest of classes but certainly the best of professors. I loved her dedication to students, helpfulness and knowledge. Talk to her if you need help. She'll be there for you.
In the lab, she doesn't do a good job of explaining the theories clearly at all. She's all over the place. For the papers, she takes months to give them back to you and doesn't post the grades on Canvas so you don't really know how you're doing. Do not take her.
she was great if you give your essay to her a week before it's due she'll tear it apart with feedback but if you change everything you'll get an A (i went from a C- to A after changes) she's very strict with the attendance policy she failed a few students from my section since they missed 4 classes she gave good relatable examples of the theories
Her class is so much fun. And she understands french is a hard language for you to learn and is willing to help you at all times.
It might take a while to get your grades back, but you have to understand that she teaches 3 different classes and still manages to do a great job and carry out a fun attitude wherever she goes. I was very happy to have her last semester, and I would definitely recommend taking her! You'll have chapter quizzes, tests, & homework and a presentation.
She says one thing, then does another. While she can be super sweet, she can also make you feel like you are a complete idiot and a waste of her time. Be prepared for her to tell you your class doesn't have a quiz on Friday, then her actually give you a quiz.
Super nice and fun professor who I would recommend. Tough grader on speeches but not very much work in SCOM122.
A good teacher but a hard grader. She is super entertaining in lectures and makes the class fly by. One group test and two individual which are kind of hard. Make sure you read the book because a lot of information comes from there. Overall a really good teacher and I would recommend her
I love her!! She is so funny! If you take your papers to her before they are due she gives you really good pointers! She is very eccentric
Dupal was the hardest grader out of all the 3 professors in my SCOM 240 lecture. She says that she's the middle-man, but she is actually the hardest. Don't take her unless you want solely criticism and no critiquing on your papers. It is bad when a teacher makes you not want to pursue your major after a basic class. She is awful. Do not recommend!
Dupal was the best out of the 3 SCOM240/241 professors in my opinion. Yes, she was very tough and expected a lot out of you but this is the class that gets you into the major so that is understandable. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS before papers are due and she will tell you exactly what to change to get a better grade. I loved her!!! Definitely take her!
Save yourself some time and take somebody else. I have never felt so discouraged from a professor before, and i'm sorry, but Dupal did that. She claims that she doesn't have time to sugarcoat when shes editing but her comments are downright rude and degrading. Unless you like getting zeros for hard work, don't take her :)
Dupal is a strict professor, but she knows her stuff. She is a harsh grader but if you go to her office hours she will help you edit your rough draft. She is very helpful and willing to help when needed.
Seems nice at first. Changes quickly. Do not take. Very bold and impolite. A huge perfectionist. her way is alway "right"
Confusing and mean. Very discouraging as a professor I originally looked up to.
She doesn't have a filter, and can say things that come off as extremely rude. I think the fact that shes French Canadian she hasn't fully understood the norms of American culture and society. She would laugh out loud at peoples answers, and also laughed at peoples presentations in front of them and the class, really unprofessional.
Prof Dupal is the rudest and honestly, the worst professor Ive EVER had at JMU. Shes a ridiculously hard grader. She made taking a class I was looking forward to something I dreaded. If you want a good grade you deserve for how hard youve worked dont take her.
Dupal is a great lady but grades harsh. She allows a few extra credit speeches but if you want to do well, you need to work for it.
Professor Dupal is hands down the BEST professor in the communications school. She is not here to be your best friend - she's here to help. If you want to succeed, she will guarantee that you do - but it is not free. The best decision I've ever made was taking her class because I actually feel prepared for my future career. Make the right decision!
SCOM 261: Terrible. She grades like you know AP style and her way of writing. she takes forever to give back grades and when she does, she doesn't spare your feelings at all. So rude with comments. She thinks she is being honest, but she's just being extremely rude with what she leaves on your papers. DO NOT TAKE HER YOU WILL HATE THIS CLASS.
I heard she was a great professor for scom240/41 but for 261 she is a nightmare. She takes forever to grade things for our small class and her comments are BEYOND RUDE like I actually feel like she is tearing apart my character along with my paper. She expects you to be an expert in the AP style and PR field. STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLASS!!!
One of the most unpleasant professors I have ever had. Not helpful whatsoever in office hours or after classtime. I only took her because she was the only professor open and I was desperate to get into the class. If this is the case for you, WAIT. It is not worth it. Grades your essays harshly and likes to watch you suffer academically for fun.
Dupal thinks being mean and closed off towards her students is effective or even humorous. she gives good lectures but is the worst professor out of the three
Dupal is actually the worse out of all of them. Not only is she a tough grader, she tears down your esteem and enjoys it. She talks badly about the other SCOM professors and you can tell she thinks she is more intelligent and superior than them. If you go to her for help, she is condescending. There's a fine line between being tough & disrespectful
Just don't even waste your time
Terrible. I've never given a professor a bad rating before. Has extremely specific grading criteria, which is never explicitly stated in rubrics. Took off multiple points from speeches for my posture not being to her liking (I had recently dislocated my knee but that didn't matter to her). I had a 4.0 GPA before I took her class, please avoid her.
Very rude. I dreaded this class so much. Waits until all the evaluations are in to give us back our grades for the semester, and then grades harshly while not using rubric. Took off points on my speech because she of different viewpoints she holds. Just avoid this class at all costs, you can find a better professor. She enjoys students suffering.
Professor Dupal is such a sweet lady and she's very understanding of her students especially during a pandemic. She really knows what she's talking about and is willing to help you understand. She genuinely cares about her students and told us to let her know if we wanted to come over and use her canoes. She is a good teacher especially for a GenEd
Prof Dupal is so funny and sweet. I just took this as a gen-ed and I hate public speaking but we had the option to stay online or come to class once a week, so you definitely have flexibility when it comes to participation. She put the textbook readings online so you don't have to buy a book. The midterm was open note, overall I'd take again.
Just show up to her class and you'll be fine. I didn't read the assigned readings at all, but I went to class every time we had it and took light notes and still did good in the class. She talks about her personal life a lot but still gets to the content and is a great professor. Very passionate about communications. Highly recommend this class!
You work all semester long with a client and write multiple stories for them while learning PR/AP style writing. It's hard AF and Dupal is an extreme grader (she always finds something to critique no matter what). Not great communication toward the class as a whole but if you meet w her she is nice! Curved grade 9% at the end of semester! :)
Most of this class was self-taught and she would take forever to grade. Her lack of clarity on assignments and lecture material was frustrating and stressful. Additionally, she told us she would curve a few assignments (in writing) and never did. Can also come off a bit rude which I know made a lot of students uncomfortable to participate.
Not sure why Dupal has so many bad ratings. She is labeled as a "harsh grader," and while she is, she gives you the same opportunity to pass and get into the SCOM major as any other professor would. She's nice and willing to work with you and answer your questions. Just read the textbook and ask questions and you'll do just fine.
She's so mean! Every time I would ask a question she would make me feel so stupid. And when grading my papers and responding to emails, she would say the meanest things. I would avoid asking questions because I was afraid of what she would say. She also opened up on the first day of class saying. she even admitted being the hardest grader.
Shes an extremely harsh grader even when youve gone to her office hours for help and the way she responds to email comes off rude most of the time. I never wanted to reach out to her because of her responses.
Took the 4 week summer course. When submitting assignments, READ & FOLLOW the rubric for maximum points. Be aware that you will have to work for an A in this class and it is not a walk in the park. I found the lectures long (30-40pgs) but useful. Only a midterm and final and she is available Monday-Friday. Was very kind from my experience.
It feels like you could get away without doing the excessive readings, but theyre 90% of the test material. Tends to go on tangents and is a stickler for rules/rubrics, but is a really great human being. Show up for class though, ask her to read over your outlines, learn the correct formatting & oral citations. You will have to work for an A thou
She's really nice, definitely can come off as rude or mean at times though. Most of the class is on you to read the text and grasp an understanding of it for the quizzes and exams. Ask questions during the class or during office hours! The feedback she gives for the writing assignments is helpful and detailed.
You will not find a professor that cares as much as Prof Dupal. Yes, she is a hard grader but she will give you lots of feedback. You will learn in her class. She will prepare you for other classes you will take in SCOM unlike some of the easier 240/241 teachers. You can go to office hours and she will sit with you until you understand. Good person
She's great, super funny, nice, and helpful! Definitely recommend for SCOM 122, only 2 speeches and extra credit opportunities throughout the class too!
Prof. Dupal is a great professor. She is very passionate about the subject she teaches and has an awesome sense of humor. The only real grades in this class revolve around the two speeches which she grades toughly but she gives you lots of feedback. The midterm was open note, but the final was not. Try not to miss class as it will affect your grade
Requires submission of paper copies for every assignment. Grades unnecessarily harshly and doesnt properly read submissions (took points off due to her mistake in reading.) The 1 extra credit assignment (an optional speech) was only worth 7.5/200 total points for speeches.
She overall wasnt friendly in my class but her class wasnt too difficult
Dupal is an angel. Caring, personable, and gives good lectures/ the textbook readings are online. I got out of class early most days. She would do anything to help you. 2 speeches, 2 tests (midterm open note, final not) she was so so sweet, down to earth and helpful I very much recommend.
It is so bad... I want to give you a zero. But thats not possible. So I give you, a one. Good luck if you are afraid of public speaking or have no experience. This class is not a very welcoming environment and grading is really tough. I often received feedback that was discouraging and embarrassing.
Professor Dupal is a professor that you will either love or hate. She was always really kind and answered questions to the fullest. However her grading becomes really harsh as she sometimes takes a points off for little things. If you follow the guidelines of each assignment, even if you have trouble with public speaking, you should do well.
She is awesome! I had her for an 8am class and I still looked forward to it. She's hilarious and fun. I think a lot of people who give bad ratings just do not like public speaking (which is what most of the class is). There are a few assignments here and there, but the tests are easy and the speeches are what really matters.
LOVE Dupal. She's a tough grader on speeches and outlines, but she gives great feedback to help you improve for the next one. She lets you redo one of the speeches. This class isn't hard at all if you follow the rubrics for the speeches.
She was very passive-aggressive. I never felt that she respected us. Graded by very few things. 240 graded by 2 tests+4 quizzes. 241 graded by 2 papers + 1 presentation. For the presentation, we were given very little time to prepare. When we brought up our concerns she turned the blame on us, even though we got our groups 1 week before.
she is so rude and does not respond to emails. she is so disorganized and can't keep up with her grades. the only good thing was her lectures didn't suck. attendance is mandatory and she has a grade for attendance. this was individual presentations and she grades super hard
I absolutely LOVE professor Dupal. She was always funny in class and she really cares about her students and wants to see them do well. As long as you are prepared, her class should be pretty easy and laid back.
Dupal is an amazing lecturer; she really knows her stuff. I learned SO much from her. She is willing to help you, but her feedback can be harsh and condescending, but tolerable! Take her!!
Perfect example of a professor who thinks they know everything about the subject but doesn't actually practice it in the real world. The only good thing is the midterm was open note. Very tough grader; She says it's okay to do certain things in your speech but then she takes points off for them. Gives study guides that don't cover half the test.
She was my favorite of the 3 SCOM 240/241 professors. Her lectures were so much more engaging and entertaining. She can be a tough grader but ultimately is just trying to help you succeed. She deserves more love because she is so nice and caring if you take the chance to get to know her.
My favorite JMU professor! She gets too much hate, but she is so much fun and such a great lecturer. This was my first class every other day and it was such a great start to my day. Classes were always entertaining and down to earth. Love Prof Dupal so much! Take her if you can, just get to know her and you'll be fine.
Professor Dupal is the best teacher I have had at JMU I had to take this class twice but with Dupal's help I was able to pass. She went above and beyond to help me in school and outside of school. Without her there is a good chance I wouldnt have made it through college. Even if she is hard on you she is one of the few teachers that actually cares.
Cares so deeply about all of her students. She is so knowledgeable and will do anything to help you get the grade you ear, regardless of what is going on.
She was the most unreasonable out of all 3 Scom 240/241 professors. very hard grader and when you try to talk to her she doesn't help. I would not recommend her to anyone.
My internet crashed when picking classes, and the only SCOM available was a 2-1/2 hour class on Mondays with Prof. Dupal. Don't get me wrong, this class was not something I looked forward to. However, Prof. Dupal's mix of humor, storytelling, knowledge, and understanding of her students made this class bearable. Take Dupal (not for 2.5 hours tho)!
She's a great professor for SCOM eases you into public speaking and only 4 speeches total ask questions and pay attention and you should be fine plenty of resources for help as well
Dupal makes it WAY harder than it has to be. Her lectures are weird and she grades the only 2 presentations VERY harshly. She takes forever to grade and does not reply to emails. Says she has a "holistic way of grading" but she puts a random number down that you do not deserve. SHE DOES NOT GIVE OUT 100s FOR NOTHING!!! take anyone but her please
Just sad the JMU would even have someone like this teaching a must-pass class like this. Have never had a professor care less about her students lol. Do not take her no matter what!!
Overall, she's a decent professor. She's a tough grader and doesn't give the clearest instructions regarding speeches and outlines. She's not accessible outside of class, doesn't care if you're sick, and can sometimes be condescending when challenged about her grading. 6.5/10, take a different professor who doesn't treat a required class like this.
Super funny and sociable lady however she could be better at arranging information for our understanding. I thought she graded my first speech kinda harshly but I took attentive notes and did fine in the class. Very knowledgeable about communication and has lots of unique stories to connect the curriculum to.
Hardest professor out of the lab options her lectures are very good but she's tough on grading and takes a while to grade. Final and midterm are all on application so not hard but the two essays carry your lab grade (the average on the first essay was a 60 tough grader) going to office hours or the writing center will help you fit her standards.
Definitley a tough grader but if you go to her office hours for guidance she will help you and have your paper fit her criteria which will help your grade on it alot. People make her seem harder than she actually is, if you put the time in and go to her office hours you will do decent.
she was the rudest teacher i had at jmu the absolute worse
Dupal is great. Very funny, nice, and accommodating.
The professor can be tough, but the class is manageable with the help of resources like ChatGPT and Unstuck AI for study prep. Attendance is mandatory, but the lectures are worth it despite the strict grading.
I personally despise public speaking, but even in spite of that I have enjoyed this course because of Professor Dupal. She is hilarious in class, and if you need help she will work with you. The presentations are very low stress; she tries making the atmosphere more comfortable, and offers a redo if it didn't go how you expected.
She expects a lot of her students but doesn't give enough help to reflect those expectations. Every assignment is just you scrambling to figure out how to do it and then she will rip it apart with the grades. Nice lady and funny in class. Terrible professor.
I actually really enjoyed this class, but man she is a tough grader. She says one thing, and then when it's time for grading she tears you apart. Also we are expected to turn in the final portfolio even when we don't know our grades for our previous work sooo make that make sense. She's super nice and supportive though. Go to office hours!!!!
I do not recommend this class. It's a requirement for scom majors but I suggest taking it with another professor. She says what to fix when you have your workshops but then you fix it and she tears you apart way too much when she grades. The highest I think anyone got over the course of the 4 pieces was a B. She's rude and harsh! DO NOT TAKE HER!!
Dupal gets a lot of mixed review and I think she is a professor that really cares about setting her students up for success in the future. 240 is not an easy class regardless of what professor you take. If you put the time in you will do well in the class. Go to office hours and get clarification on things you don't understand and you will do fine
