Dr. Quinney is hilarious and gives great lectures. She is usually very easy to follow and keeps you interested. However, the amount of content covered in lecture is almost always too much to take down in notes, so after class note-taking from the textbook is a necessity. Over all a excellent prof.
Fun, excited instructor. Very knowledgeable.
Best teacher ever! Often makes jokes, its helpful to go to the class as she explains in more detail but she posts the powerpoint and its still super detailed and you could pass off that. Beware if you go to this class on an empty stomach you will be more hungry when its over due to at least thee food references per class. Still the best!
Annie is the best prof I've ever had! She is hilarious in all of the lectures while still managing to get through all of the material, she is organized, her notes online are amazing and she's very enthusiastic. Outside of class she is very approachable as well. 10/10 would recommend! Rocks rock!
Can be funny and make the lectures more interesting. Also helpful when needed
Favorite prof!
Awesome prof. Engaging and excited. Would 100% recommend anyone to take this class with her.
Probably my favourite prof. Enthusiastic and makes lectures interesting. Also, really easy and interesting course. Would 100% recommend.
Annie rocks! Her lectures are clear and well organized, moreover, it's interesting and engaging because she tells it like a story. Absolutely hands down, the coolest prof in this University. Highly recommend!!!!!
Annie was an awesome professor! Super enthusiastic and clearly is passionate about what she does. She keeps the lectures colorful and entertaining, making it an easy way to learn. The course I took was a little heavy for an option class(as in quite a bit of work), but if its mandatory or you love rocks, then I would highly recommend her!
Annie is by far one of my favourite professors. She is hilarious, enthusiastic and makes the course material fun to learn. Highly recommend her.
Annie is an amazing professor. Her first time teaching an engineering geology class and she was flawless. Funny, engaging, and extremely educational lectures paired with interesting labs made for a wonderful experience. She made a subject that most engineers find to be extremely dull very interesting and applicable to the engineering world. Bravo!
The most fun prof I've had for sure. You'll laugh every class, and actually learn stuff too. Lectures aren't mandatory I guess, but you'd miss out on her teaching. The course itself is fantastic as well; highly recommend it if you need a science option. I would take another one of her courses in a heartbeat.
I look forward to geology classes because of her, she has an amazing presence in the room. She always seems to be smiling, and she'll make you laugh every class. When it comes to class material, she is very clear with her lectures and is amazingly instructional. Her slides have tons of info on them, and she constantly updates D2l. 10/10 professor!
Best prof ever, and a very good human being!
The labs were leaps and bounds ahead of the course. Annie teaches as if she's teaching 3rd graders, which made it really tough to drag myself out of bed for the 9am lecture. Super easy class, but I was hoping for more.
Dr. Quinney was a pleasure to have as a teacher this semester, she made 9 am lectures fun and exciting. If you're not great with memorization, you could find it to be a hard course because there is a lot to remember however i found it to be very interesting. Make sure to go to all of the labs and learning assessments because they help you learn.
Annie is engaging as a lecturer, but there was a slight disconnect between what was focused on in class and in labs and what was emphasized on the tests. There were also a few instances where there was some confusing communication on D2L. The learning assessments were irritating because we were assessed before we actually learned the material.
She's a great prof. Very kind, knowledgeable, and organized. The course itself is a lot of work though. Labs are a bit tough, make sure you find someone to work on them with. There's a lot of lecture material, but Dr. Quinney makes the lectures interesting and worth attending. Would highly recommend her.
She goes on and on how it's suppose to be easy class, but only few people got A to my knowledge, it's easy to do ok in the class, but seriously hard to get that A to pull up your grade. Notes are not all that clear, but final is based off inadequate/ weird wording within the notes, refuses to give any extra credit to even those that deserve it. 3/5
Annie Quinney is the best prof I have had in my 4 years at u of c, you have to pay attention to the small details, but she makes the lectures so interesting that it is easy to pay attention. If you are a bio student you will find this option incredibly easy while still being interesting.
I love Dr. Quinney! I wish she taught the whole course and not just the first half. I recommend this course to everyone just because of Dr. Quinney alone, shes amazing and funny and makes lectures/tutorials really fun and engaging. 10/10 recommend.
Shes awesome
Dr. Quinney is amazing! She is hilarious, keeps the massive class engaged, and does not try to trick you on the midterms. I wish she taught all of GLGY 305....
An awesome prof! She's really funny and always comes to class with lots of energy which keeps the class engaged the whole time.
I LOVE Dr. Quinney, one of the best profs I've ever had. She's super funny and her lectures are far from boring, 10/10.
Annie is one of the best professors I've ever had. She makes lectures super interesting. Make sure you show up to class because she tests on things that aren't on the slides. Also, her tests are a lot harder than you would think they are, much harder than the review she does.
So cheerful and engaging. She seems like she truly enjoys what she's teaching. I often leave her classes happy and excited to learn more. Super approachable too, so easy to go up to her and just get lost in conversations about geology (and anything else really).
Great professor, really nice personality
Annie is an amazing prof, super friendly and enthusiastic (glad I had her for field school), although she is quite a tough marker.
She is nice and patient and giving a lot of useful information and practice before tests, but it's still difficult to get an A.
She was so great. Really funny and enthusiastic. I had a bit of trouble with her tests, but other than that, she's great. What wasn't great is that we didn't have her for the full curriculum, which I would have loved.
Annie is seriously the best prof I've ever had! She's super enthusiastic about her teachings and always makes it very fun for the class as much as she can. I had a super fun time in the course and although I didn't do as good as I thought I would, it was still informative and fun. The grade curving is very difficult to get an A so try your best!
Dr. Quinney does her best to adapt science for non-science majors, she is incredibly enthusiastic and respectful. The wording on her tests can be a little tricky, read closely and pay attention in lectures. She is very willing to clarify concepts and break them down into fragments you understand. Her jokes are hilarious, definitely pay attention!
Firstly, this course is not an easy A (or A- for some), but the material edified was fascinating to learn during the spring. Secondly, Annie is an amazing preceptor! She is passionate, knowledgable, witty, very helpful & NOT supercilious. Assignments included 4 test (25%x3 & 10%) and Tophat (15%). I highly recommend this course to non Sci. majors!
Great professor, made geology for engineers some what interesting. Lectures and lecture quizzes were great. However, the labs every single Monday were mundane (looking at rocks) and the assignments were graded tougher than the quizzes. The amount of participation and lab material made the course feel like it was worth 4 credits instead of 3.
I took this class as a blow off class since I am a science major in a related study, and it was much more difficult than i thought it would be. The material itself isn't too difficult but there is an overwhelming amount of information you have to memorize. You CAN skip class but she gives hints as to what will be on the test
Annie is lovely! So funny, intelligent, and super approachable. I'm a non-science major and took this class as an option; I found it super doable! As long as you attend lecture and pay attention it's not difficult to get an A. Be ready for picture identification questions on the exams!
Dr. Quinney is by far the best prof I have ever had! She is so enthusiastic with all components of her lectures and makes learning the information super interesting and fun. She truly cares about her students and wants you to do well and gives hints in lectures. She is awesome and hilarious in each of her lectures and makes lectures so engaging!
Her lectures are very engaging and the topics are catered towards non-science students. It is clear she is very knowledgeable in the subject area. Exam questions are generally simple if you attend lectures, however they are sometimes very specific.
Annie is knowledgeable, hilarious, and overall AMAZING. Her lectures are very entertaining and informative with easy to understand concepts. Would love to take another course with her. Lots of memorization needed to do well in this course, so be prepared!
Quizzes are harder than expected, questions are more specific than explained in lectures. Lab exams are very far and can be done well with preparation. Lots of memorization. LABS ARE IMPORTANT!
Amazing professor, made geology very interesting for engineers. Quizzes are specific and vary a lot in difficulty but the lab midterm and exam are quite easy if you do the labs (the hype and stress around them was not necessary). Overall was one of the most enjoyable classes of my degree and would definitely recommend this professor.
Dr. Quinney is a great professor who teaches very naturally and is super helpful if you ever need extra help. Her exams are not a walk in the park and require quite a bit of studying and participation in the labs in order to do well. Overall it was a great class that I would definitely take again!
Dr. Quinney is an absolute gem. She is very enthusiastic about the content of this course, which makes the learning easy. She is humorous and keeps it light. Show up to class, study, and you're guaranteed an A.
i love her so much. She makes classes so fun.
By far my favorite professor. Lectures are entertaining as she is so funny! Super knowledgeable and passionate which makes for engaging lectures. Test questions come directly from the slides, but coming to class helped me remember the content. Fantastic professor, and I wish I could take more classes with her!
Annie's hands down the BEST professor I had ever had in my four years. I was lucky enough to have her for GLGY201 too. She is SO funny and truly cares about her students' success. Come to lecture; she always had me smiling and laughing. As a bio student, I took geology courses as options and grew to love the field. Annie really inspired me!
Dr Quinney is an amazing lecturer who loves what she does, and she makes it interesting for us too. The lectures and labs lined up and the whole course was well organized. She posts notes online before class, so attendance isn't mandatory, but there's no reason to skip because her lectures are great and she really prepares you for tests!
Annie is an excellent professor and really cares about her students and the material she teaches. She puts in a lot of effort and makes the lectures interesting. It's nice to have a professor really do their job well. She's also deserving of a chili pepper ;)
Most fun lectures I have ever attended. Shes very nice and helpful during her office hours, and so enthusiastic about Geology. She makes the material easier to understand. I wish I had her for GLGY201. Youll love this course with her.
Amazing prof, only reason why I liked geology since 201 was just a mess. Go to all her lectures, sometimes exams will test on things that she's only mentioned in class. Exams are all based on lecture notes and things discussed in class. Love Annie!!
Amazing prof, lectures are super engaging. Really wants the best for you, and the tests are very straightforward. 10/10 would recommend!
She taught a class that she learned over the christmas break very well. Labs were a lot of work, but heavily weighted which was good, and the exams were extremely fair, even if a bit long for the MT, but she let us stay 20 minutes extra. Extremely helpful in her office, overall she did a good job with what she had.
Super amazing prof!! So friendly and very proud of her knowledge. Lectures are very entertaining and easy to listen to. Wish I could have her for every class!!!
This class is supposed to be a easyA, but clearly not any longer. SOME ppl were caught doing an ONLINE quiz together, and she changed the whole quiz regulation. you have to be in class, submit a password onto tophat for attendanc, turn your location on so she knew you were IN CLASS, and if you were more than 5 MIN late, you got a zero on the quiz.
I was really excited for this class, it seemed so interesting and fun, but Annie completely changed this class and it is much harder than it should be for a non-science major class. She seems to assume everyone is a science major and doesn't clearly break concepts down. The quiz regulations are also insane now and not fair.
There was obviously not a lot of thought put into the construction of this course, as there have been countless changes within only a couple weeks. The spring term is far too short to have such a chaotic system of assessing our knowledge. Instead of using our class as your test dummies, figure out your plan for how the class will work beforehand.
My favorite professor, hands down! Makes the lectures both interesting and entertaining and is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter. Not sure what all the confusion is about regarding the online quizzes. Of course you have to be in class for an online quiz, the same as you would for a paper one!
Annie used this class as her guinea pigs for a new organization to the course. Unfortunately it has been the downfall of the course. I heard incredible things about this class, but this class has been a disaster. She will tell you that the exams are not cumulative, but she MIGHT test on previous material. Be cautious with this class.
Annie Quinney is good at articulating the material and bringing an enthusiastic approach to teaching, but there is a clear lack of organization and logic. Online quizzes in a large classroom is flawed. I agree they should be done in class, but at the very least there should be a minute given for each question. This course is far too messy for me.
Dr. Quinney gives amazing lectures, and is clearly passionate in the subject matter. Although the course has been restructured, if you go to classes and participate in tutorials, you should get a high grade. The amount of people upset an 'A' isn't being handed to them is funny. The course is very engaging - and worth taking if you like dinosaurs
Yes, the course format this spring changed and we had a quiz every week, done online in class. In my opinion this was not terrible, if you came to class and took some time to study the quizzes were not too difficult. However, the review provided was extremely unlike the quizzes which made it more challenging to succeed. Overall, not that bad.
There were no midterms and no final for this section of the class, if you showed up to class the quizzes werent that hard, she had clear expectations in regards to quizzes. If you reviewed what she told you to the quizzes were a breeze! Would take another class with her!
Annie's class was pretty tough, but if you went to class and read the lecture notes, the answers were clearly there. The weekly quizzes weren't the best choice but she said she won't do that again. This definitely isn't an easy A and does require you to work hard. Overall, an interesting class and Annie is really kind!
THIS IS NOT AN EASY A AT ALLLL! be ware this is not an easy class, it was a lot of memorization, and the exams were quite difficult. Annie is a lovely prof, and is very enthusiastic, but the class was quite hard tbh.
I managed to get an a+ in this class and am a non science major. This class was very easy if you showed up, took notes and paid attention. There were weekly quizzes which I found fantastic because you got to study less material than if there was only 2 exams. If Something happened and you missed a quiz she was very accommodating. Go to class!
Absolutely loved her as a prof. Super caring, loved how she tries as much as possible to connect the content we learned to real life situations! The labs were also straightforward and easy. If you make the effort, getting an A should be no problem!
The most beautiful, caring, and outgoing professor ever. This was a fun class.
She's good but she should comment on the cursed chair.
She is one of the best professors that I've ever had the privilege of having in my engineering degree. She is absolutely amazing and is an absolute breath of fresh air compared to my other serious engineering professors. She cares about our learning, is passionate about the content, and is hands-down one of the best in the entire university.
Annie is a really good lecturer who tries to engage with the class and get your attention. The content of the class itself and the way there are presentations and labs are a little much. Quizzes are always a bit of surprise.
Annie is an amazing lecturer and she makes the class very fun. I took this course in the spring, and they attempted a remodelled version of it where they used weekly quizzes instead of exams. Overall, I got an A- in this "harder" version of the course. Now they have changed it back to grading off of midterms, which means it's an easy A once again.
Erin was a great receptionist but an even better professor
Really great prof who is extremely knowledgeable in her field. The content itself was kind of blah the first half of the semester (more of a preamble) but the second half was super interesting. No textbook but its best to go to class as she includes lots of little things that end up on the exams. Easy A overall.
She genuinely cares about her students. Her lectures are so funny and pass very quickly. The final and midterm were both worth 40% and she does tutorials every Wednesday worth 20%. You can get a 100% on tutorials by just looking at the notes. Overall its a pretty easy course. Would recommend!
Shes super charismatic and makes lectures really enjoyable. She makes every class fun to go to and wants everyone to do well. Great prof!
Anne was a very tough grader. I felt like I was drowning in all this course work and its my first D Ive received after being in my third year of uni. I only get As so this is so messed up to me.... I am so upset. I put so much hard work into this course but obviously all of it went to waste. RIP my GPA, you will be missed.
Annie is an absolute sweetheart. She is extremely passionate about dinosaurs and makes class so exciting. Class was MWF but Wednesday had in-class tutorials that were super short and easy and then only a handful of tophat questions were marked. This offering had tut 20% and non-cumulative exams 40% & 40% that weren't bad at all. Great option course
One of the most caring and engaging profs at this university! Lectures are super interesting and labs are fun. If you're still confused with certain concepts I would recommend you go to her office hours, as this is what helped me the most for this class. U of C needs more profs like her!
One of the best professors in the geoscience department! Was close to changing my degree before I took glgy 202 with her. Her lectures were great and she was always clear about what she expects from her students. Her exams are extremely fair if you studied.
Great class, kind, positive, passionate prof, easy participation marks, virtual lab exams are awful but otherwise course is very straightforward. Simple and helpful teacher, always replies and gives updates, email responses are quick. Would recommend for students in Bio Science degrees. Mostly on tophat, should be an easy A.
If this class were in person I imagine it would be much better. Due to COVID, it was asynchronous and online. In this first week alone, 120 questions were assigned for the lab. The final assessment is a group project which seems redundant considering we can't even meet in person. It's a little intense for an intro course.
A little late on feedback, since I took her course before online classes, but one of the best profs I've had so far. Very clear about grading, what to study and assignments from the start, and I personally found the course interesting. Final was pretty info-heavy but not too bad if you prep. Was nice enough to offer writing me a reference letter.
There are a loot of online lab questions on top hat due by 5pm each friday which she opens on Sundays & you can change your answers after you see that its wrong so it's super easy to get 100 on them. Exams are zoom calls asking you to identify 4 rocks &/or minerals & there's a group project. Easy-ish A & she's very kind & super helpful with q's
This class was completely asynchronous and taught through youtube videos made by the prof. She was decent at explaining but the practice made everything make sense and were EASY marks. Had ZERO contact with the prof but she seemed nice in the videos? I liked how the class was taught/graded for the most part, but she did do a group project online.
Dr. Quinney is the nicest prof I have ever had. She is caring and will even set up a one on one zoom meeting with you if you are confused. I have never seen another prof take the time out of their day to do what she does to help students. Expectations are clear, good marks are easy to achieve, and her lectures are fun with lots of puns aboutgeology
This woman is a saviour. She's everything. You are so safe with her
My second review. She is a true gem and a wonderful professor, unbelievably considerate, kind, friendly and helpful. Great content, passionate and interesting lectures and extra content. For an online class it is a no brainer. Easy A if you put the work in and have decent English skills. Lab heavy, fair amt. of work to do but it's all very easy.
Sweet prof and an easy class, online anyway. Labs were time consuming but not hard. I would absolutely take her class again.
Absolutely wonderful, her lectures were informative but also entertaining. I'm not from a science background, but I enjoyed this course so much that I would gladly take more courses with her. She's obviously passionate about what she teaches, and she makes sure the students are actually learning and enjoying the content instead of just memorizing.
very good
One of the best there is for sure
Reminds me of teachers in high school, she genuinely cares about her students and wants them all to succeed. She is very kind and easily accessible outside of class. She is also very entertaining and I found all of her lectures very enjoyable. She is an example of what a good prof should be like.
Hands down the best professor I've had so far. Dr. Quinney's enthusiasm for the geosciences is contagious and she really cares about her students. If you don't understand something, she is more than happy to go over it with you outside of class. Lab assignments are very manageable and most of the lecture assignments are participation based. 10/10
This class will likely be the highest mark I ever get in university. The lectures were amazing, and it's so easy to get 100% on assignments because many are just marked for completion rather than correctness. You shouldn't miss class though, because many in-class activities take place over the semester that are for grades.
One of the best professors at UCalgary. She encourages learning as a life skill. Unconventional grading which gives students flexibility and allows for true learning which includes making mistakes and having bad days. If you are extremely grade motivated, this course will teach you an important life lesson - learning is more important than grades.
Dr. Quinney is very sweet and actually cares that you learn from this course. She does not make the labs very difficult and she is very fair on all the assessments she gives us. She made this class more fun.
Shes such a passionate lecturer and takes care to answer questions asked in class even linking additional articles and videos about questions. Very generous grading and labs really help you to understand and apply. Easy class if you go to labs and listen in lectures
professor Quinney is the kindest sweetest professor you will ever meet. she's so energetic and enthusiastic about what she teaches. she truly makes the content so interesting and only wants her students to succeed.
Annie is such a good prof, class was always fun and interesting and the labs were easy and fun. Even tho the finals for the lab and lecture are worth 30% each its not hard to get a good mark on them.
Extremely caring prof who cares about student success. Tests were designed fairly and entirely on posted material which means that it was easy to study for even if you've missed lectures.
The best prof I've had this semester. She was amazingly kind both inside class and outside during events. Annie is by far my favourite person in the geology department. The course was set up for people to genuinely learn and not worry so bad about grades, while still not just being a free handout.
She creates an amazing atmosphere and really cares about each student. Really good at teaching and easy to understand. Would 100% recommend to anyone wanting to take an easy class.
I have Dr. Quinney's class at 9 am and if it was anyone else I most likely wouldn't attend. Her class is engaging and interesting, the amount of resources and real world examples she provides in class is excellent. Her class has been my favourite so far this semester and on some days its the only class I actually look forward to.
sooo nice love her so much
she is sooo soo soo sweet and kind. she teaches you like an elementary school class vibe. so cute and so fun.
Dr. Quinney is absolutely lovely! She was a joy to have as a professor and I looked forward to class every week. Her teaching style was refreshing-- I already knew all the course content before even studying for the final due to how she structured the lectures. Highly recommend taking a class with her!
Dr. Quinney is truly a gem (pun intended), and I would 100% take a course with her again if given the chance. This was the first time this specific course had been taught and even though there were a few hiccups, it was such an awesome class. She is such a great teacher and was always kind and available for questions.
Hands down the best prof I've had this semester. Not only does she have a great personality, but her teaching ability and material made me genuinely excited for a 9am class. I would take her classes every year if I could
She's so nice & accessible. The notes were very detailed & she made even 9 am lectures bearable. For a class that seems so incredibly dull (it's about ROCKS), her & Dr. Dutchak managed to make it fun by giving it lore, which was refreshing. The final was disproportionately tough so she took questions off to make it fair instead of blaming students.
One of the most enthusiastic and caring profs I've had. She makes lectures extremely fun and has a clear passion for what she does and for teaching- as well as builds connections with her students as they learn. She really cares for us to get something out of the class more than just getting a grades, and the course was super easy!
Professor Quinney makes this class super engaging and easy to learn. The lessons are well-structured, and the grading is fair - focus on learning, not just grades. Tools like unstuck AI were a big help for preparing.
One of the most genuinely likable profs I have ever had. Had a bunch of energy and her lectures were very interactive, which made it much easier to focus at 9am. The class is super easy, but the final when I took it was the hardest final I took that semester, though she was incredible at answering questions I had during the final.
Teaches you like an elementary student and is hilarious! Really enjoyed her lectures even though it was online. The assignments and quizzes were a breeze.
Honestly I took this class for a GPA booster and I thought it would be interesting but the assignments were actually really challenging to me if you have no background to dinosaurs. For an online course it actually brought down my GPA lol. Prof is really nice though
Genuinely the best professor I've had, incredibly passionate about her subject and passed that enthusiasm on through lectures. Made lectures engaging and fun, very good speaker and answered questions well and without judgement. Highly recommended!
She was absolutely the best professor I have had in my whole entire life. She knew how to engage the students in the course and this way made the lectures fun and worth it. She inspired me to actually end up switching into Geoscience. She graded fairly and gave feedback. She would give many opportunities for improvement and was very caring.
Exactly the kind of teacher I hope I can be someday- perfect for humanities majors who want a good option for their science breadth requirement. She's very energetic, kind, and fun, and the class is very easy if you do the work.
Such and amazing prof, she's like Ms. Frizzle from the magic school bus every class is so entertaining
This professor is genuinely so passionate about what she teaches, and it makes every lecture really interesting and enjoyable. The way she teaches makes the information way easier to process than just reading from a textbook!
She made the class entertaining, educational and overall fun to participate in. She's always trying to improve her lectures and labs which makes the course so much more reliable and enjoyable knowing she is looking out for her students.
You can tell that she loves the topics she teaches about. Her passion made this class very enjoyable and I would find myself looking forward to her class.
Super engaging lectures with a professor who really cares about the material. The setup and grading really made this course feel like a breath of fresh air compared to the other heavy science courses taken in first year. Engagement with students (along with the astronaut roleplay) made lectures fun.
My favourite prof this semester. Super funny and super nice to go chat with! Her lectures were engaging and organized. Expecting a good grade still need to take the final. Tests are reasonable if you've been to lectures you'll get a good grade. Labs are super fun and interesting.
Dr. Quinney is an amazing professor that really cares and you can tell is passionate about what she teaches and does; she inspired me a many others to maybe even go for a minor in geology. Thanks Dr. Q
Amazing prof, she really cares about her students and what them to learn. Very easy to talk too and is willing to walk you through concepts you don't understand in her office hours. Labs were fun but long, and I enjoyed the role-playing more than I thought.
the craziest final exam of all time. i'm a 3rd year cmmb major, took this as an elective and i can say this ruined my gpa. she said it would be “challenging” but it was NOTHING like the lectures or labs all year. super unfair.
she was a nice prof but the final exam was nothing like the course material and ruined my whole semester.
The final was genuinely evil
Best prof I've ever had. She is very kind and engaging with her students, and she really cares! I took this as an elective and barely studied for it, and ultimately did well in her class because I participated and asked questions. DO THIS, or you will do poorly. The final was challenging, but it was all course-related content, so can't complain.
