AB Billings shows personal concern for the learning of his students more than any professor I've seen. Beyond his clear, concise lectures, he is always willing to give his time helping anyone who will ask. I truly enjoy his evident passion for teaching.

Precise, concise, very knowledgeable and willing to help his students. He has an open office policy with an often revolving door. Legal "cheat sheets" don't make the tests a piece of cake but they sure are nice. Study and you'll succeed.
Overall, I found him to be an excellent professor. He used several effective teaching mediums (labs, lectures, reviews), presented material in a clear manner, and was even willing to take phone calls for help.
Professor Billings is the BEST math (statistics) teacher I have ever had. Clear explanations. Uses examples that students can relate to. His office door is always open and he is always willing to help students who need help.
He is always available in his office when and if you need to talk to him. His notes are available online to print, which is helpful. He prepares the class very well for the exams.
Professor constantly degrades students and has a "I'm better than my students" attitude. Reads online notes outloud during class, barely demonstrating any new examples or elaborating on those used in the notes.
A good teacher with good lecture notes, but very degrading in class to students responses and questions. Very picky about wording on exams (if you get one word wrong takes off a lot of points.)
Reads the notes to the class, doesn't really explain anything and tests are HARD!!!!!!
The raters on 4/5/04 and 4/6/04 and 4/12/04 are full of sh__. These guys must be the F students. Billings is an outstatnding professor who explains the lecture notes (does not just read them). He does NOT degrade students. He tires to help them.
Yes,Billings exams are hard. But statistics is a tough course. If you go to every class, pay attention, do the homework, and ask questions you can pass the course with an A or B. Otherwise expect a poor grade.
Anytime I went to Professor Billings office, he stopped waht he was doing and helped me. He spent many hours answering my questions and helping me understand. I hate statistics, but I have nothing but respect and praise for Professor Billings.
Mr. Billings shows mastery of his subject every day in class. His number one priority is to do anything he can to make sure the students understand the topic. He always gets the class involved in answering a few questions out loud in class to keep the a
Professor Billings is willing to do anything he can do (legally) to make sure the students understand. Willing to take phone calls at home for help. He is an excellent professor, but DON'T be tempted to skip class becuase of the online lecture notes.
Billings is the BEST. I got an A in the course, but I worked my tail off. And I learned a lot about stats.
Piece of cake. Allows you to bring sheet of paper with notes for exams. Never went to class and got an A.
He's a great guy, but the class itself is pretty tough. Tests are extremely long and there is lots of writing. I think he expects students to know way more information than they should for each exam.He also enjoys starting class early and keeping us late.
He is a super good teacher, always trying to explain concepts in extreme detail, but expects students to know too much. He expects answers on exams to be to the exact words/calculations. Takes off 10 points for one little mistake. Hard grader! But always willing to help.

He tries ramming in too much info in a short a mount of time. Its easy to understand stuff, but then using it and applying it is pretty rough. The class really sucks, and he uses every min of class time even if there is a couple minutes left and just finished going over a section
Great Teacher. Very clear explanations. Uses examples that we can relate to.I never had any idea that statistics could be useful in such a wide variety of subjects.
I am a math major. This class was as easy as it gets. Nothing harder than square roots. And Billings lets you have a formula sheet for exams. Go to class evrey day, and you can't help but pass the class.
YEAH. I got an A. Thanks to Professor Billings' help. He always tried to answer my questions and help me understand. Fantastic Teacher.
Great teacher. But is a bit of a hard grader. You have to earn every point in his course - he doesnt give points for free. Always available when I needed help. Easy to understand and explains well.
Personally, I hated his teaching style, and he seemed arrogant to me - always assuming that his students were lacking in common sense.
HEY BILLINGS DONT LET THE LAZY COMPLAINER STUDENTS WHO NEVER COME TO CLASS WALK ALL OVER YOU. FLUNK EM. THATS WHAT THEY DESERVE. I WORK HARD FOR MY GRADES.
If u just look at the easiness scale of every other person who submitted a review u can see that this INTRODUCTORY class is not easy especially with Billings. If u look at other professors there easiness score is at 4's or 5's. Thats bc they are fair and dont try to make exams impossible.
I have never had to work so hard to get an A in his class. I have taken Calc 2 at WVU and that was easier. Billings makes it so much harder then what it really is. His exams are essays and he takes off for everything, including if ur a boy. Hs is def arrogent and does not care about his students.
I go to every lecture and study for hours and i am barely getting a C. My friend has this chinese chic, hardly studies and is getting an A. Billings makes statistics one of the hardest classes to take at WVU. Hes really boring too and doesnt care for taking student opinion into consideration either.
Billings made everything in the class more difficult than it should be really complicating things. After doing tons of HW in the book and the labs you do the exams for the course and they cover basically nothing you learned when doing your required HW. He is also very hard to understand. His lectures are not very clear and very confusing.
I can't say he's the worst teacher I've had, but he's not the best. The lectures were usually boring and long. He also makes his students feel bad about asking questions and, in a way, makes them feel stupid. Overall, I didn't like his teaching style.
He is a fair professor, but his teaching style is not for those who are weak in spirit. The exercises do not relate to the exams, but they are easy. However he does not clearly explain anything that will relate to the exams. You have to study a lot and ask a lot of questions especially if you're not a math major. This is hard for an intro course.
If you study this class isn't hard. His lectures are really boring but I still plan on getting an A in the class. He's fair with grading, doesnt really curve though. Made material alot harder than it really was, but I've heard other stats teachers did the same.
Makes class alot harder than it really should be, but apparently other stat 211 professors do the same thing. If you study his notes you can easily get an A in the class. Lectures are really boring though. Every once and awhile he offered extra credit. Lab was really easy also.
He makes great notes, but do not ask him any questions because he knows all. Lord help if the man is ever wrong. He's really cocky and thinks he's going somewhere in life by teaching students stat 211. haha. Well ingeneral if you wanna ace every lab and fail every test, take this man b/c he will be sure to do that
WOW incredibly BORING. Labs extremely easy, tests require studying. He allows students to make study sheets to use during the test which was a huge help. You can get an A if you try. Billings is extremely repetitive and he stresses the plural forms of words ex. dice/die, hypothesis/hypotheses although you should learn that in English.
How can anyone give Billings a bad rating? He is the most student-oriented professor I have ever had. Always willing to help me when I needed it. Excellent teahcer - explains clearly, uses good examples. But you have to go to class to pass. Great idea to have lecture notes online, but this makes it tempting to skip class. But Don't skip class.
great teacher! nice guy and explained everything well. Makes sure you understand everything.
well, first off, the stats department's motto is "make things more difficult than they have to be" and this man takes that to a new level. I found that simply reading his online notes to myself helped more than actually listening to him in lecture. he's arogant, insulting, and completely disrespectful. the worst class i've had in my college career.
Stats is BORING. Billings tries to make it interesting - not always successful - by using "everyday" examples students can relate to. Know his stuff. Cares about the students. Very good professor.
Easy course. Great professor. Always helpful. If you can add 2+2, it is easy to pass this course. But you do have to do some work.
Great Professor. Makes the Honors Stat course easier than the regular stat course (stat211). Has student's performance and understanding as his highest priority. Can go to his office any time. ONE OF THE BEST at WVU.
very nice professor and explain everything clearly
Billings is one of the best professors at WVU. Always answers questions clearly. Uses good examples to clarify concepts. But the course is difficult and you have to study hard to get a good grade. Lecture notes posted on the web. But don't skip class. Willing to help students outside of class. A+
Did not only teach us about numbers but made us feel likeone as well! Continuosly explains how he would teach the class differently but can't because of(well really Ican't tell you why he can't take the initiative to teach his classthe way he wants RUDE AWFULPERSON! Does not consider students that do try but have troubleon tests!immediatly judged
I guesss the veteran years of his teaching here have gone to his head and somehow makes it acceptable for him to be entirely rude to students coming to him for help when they are lost in the material.I strongly urge a different teacher & WVU to look into his manner.
Extremely boring subject matter, but he tells you what you need to know for the tests. Homework is only optionable and attendance is mandatory.
Billings is a terrible teacher! Suggest you take someone else if you can save yourself now. When I went to office hours to clearify something up he just said for me to go see a tutor and said they would help out more. He tries to be funny but is just dumb...once again save yourself now
This class was a pretty easy A. Go to class because there will be extra credit at the end of the course. The homework and quizzes help to pad your grade and the tests really aren't too difficult, either. During lecture, he has an attitude about him that seems a bit arrogant. However, he is easy to understand and makes concepts pretty clear.
Students who had the other professor always told me they couldn't understand her, so I was glad I took Billings! The material is somewhat difficult and extremely boring, but that isn't his fault. He explains everything very well and gives you online notes you can bring to class. Great professor overall, but make sure to study hard!!
Dr. Billings is a GREAT teacher. I hate math and statistics, but he made the topics very easy to understand. Just go to class and pay attention. He has an "open door" policy whenever students need help. He wants all students to succeed, and helps in any way he can. If you fail Stat211, it is not his fault. One of the BEST PROFESSORS at WVU.
Billings is so enthusiastic about stats to the point where he'll probably drive you insane. But the class isn't hard if you put a little effort, and he is always willing to help. The lab really sucks, but Billings is a good teacher. I'd recommend him.
I can tell he cares about stats and wants us to learn. sometimes his responses to questions can be taken offensively/the wrong way, but i am telling myself he means well. he knows what hes talking about
I am not good at math or statistics, and he was not helpful towards me what so ever. If you ask him a question he's either way too complicated answering it, or he complains on how you asked the question and makes you feel dumb. I don't recommend him at all.
Billings definitely knew what he was talking about but he went about it the wrong way. His notes didnt help me on the quizzes, tests, or exercises. The exercises were nothing like what he taught in class, especially the applets. He knows what he's talking about but should try to relate statistics to what a college student wants to pay attention to.
Just not a good teacher. He understands the material but has no idea how to relay it to his students. He spends more time in class yelling at people for leaving early than teaching. His class may as well be him talking to himself because it is not interactive at all and doesn't help at all on tests and exams.
He knows his stuff and is very helpful one-on-one. Go to class and you get extra credit! Material is easy and lectures are crystal clear, but the lab (which is where all the grades come from) can be difficult as it is irreconcilably different from the lecture!
He knows his stuff and is a very nice person. Always answers questions clearly and completely. Treats students with respect. Willing to help outside of class. The labs suck!!!!!!!!!!
The Honors Stat course was easier than the regular stat course. Very clear lecture notes posted online. Interesting examples. Has the students learning as highest priority. One of the BEST professors at WVU. Highly recommended.
He is a HORRIBLE professor. He is way to specific when it comes to tests. He is rude and incompetent when you go to his office for help. His teach styles are atrocious. He degrades anyone that is not a statistician. I studied for hours for his tests and barley passed. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
Billings was one of the most boring and useless professors I've ever had. His lectures consisted of him reading his notes, which are posted online, verbatim. Attending his class was, quite literally, unbearable so I only ever went to find out what would be on the test so that I could teach myself how to do it. Don't his class. Just don't do it.
Worst prof I have ever taken! His notes are useless when it comes to test time & lab work. He is useless when you ask for help. This man should not be teaching! Extremely arrogant & inconsiderate of student's time, but demands respect of his by yelling at his students. Proclaims students grades if they leave class early as failing to entire class.
I currently have the class and we have not taken a test. He will not tell us when tests are until the week before. He conveys all of the methods clearly, he is not a nice person. He is rude and inconsiderate, and feels that statistics is all important. Terribly rude and unprofessional.
Huge mistake to take him last fall. With my schedule filled with classes like fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and other tough engineering courses, i expected this to be my "easy" class for the semester. WRONG. So now i have to retake statistics over the summer just to stay on track. DO NOT take his class. Tests are ridiculous. Don't even bother.
He is horrible! Someone told me to take him because he is easy, hell no! Avoid him at all costs. I went in for one-on-one help and he told me he doesn't have time for one-on-one help. And yet he complains nobody will come in to his office hours...
Do not take Billings OR Stat 211 unless necessary! It is not an easy A and attendance is mandatory which is the only reason why people go. He does not curve tests and half my class will most likely by retaking the class. The textbook is online and is not helpful at all. If you have to take Stat 211, take another teacher.
I have never had such a worse teacher in my 3 years of being here. Notes did not help towards test. Way to much info for an intro class. He was often rude, moody, and unprofessional in both class and office time. My only C since coming here. I now have to retake the course to be considered for pharmacy school. HUGE waste of time and money.
Great statistics teacher. A real asset to those who are willing to put the time and effort a statistics class takes into it. Failed the same class with a different instructor, but Billings made the material easy to remember, and if you like the office, he's a reincarnation of dwight schrute.
Great guy and a great class he constantly asks questions and gets people involved in lecture as well as takes his time to explain everything that people are to know for his tests i would recommend him for anyone!
Great teacher who really cares about his students.Stat is not easy but Billings made it seem natural.Always helpful and concerned when I went to his office for help. Best teacher in the Statistics department. I got an A in Stat211, and I give Billings an A+.
Professor Billings is the BEST. I passed the BASE 1 SAS Certification exam with no trouble after taking Billings' class. Can go to his office anytime. ALWAYS HELPFUL. Thank you Dr. Billings. A+
What a nice teacher. He is considerate, fair, and is extremely helpful. Always available for office hours. The attendance bonus is awesome if you miss a minimal amount of lecture days. Assignments, tests and quizzes are fair. Stat's is a hard subject that requires a lot of study but Billings by fair made the experience a good one.
The guy can't control a class very well, and even though class attendance isn't mandatory it should be at the rate he takes the class towards the end. ALWAYS do the homework because it will really help you master the topics that you are given in class. He hates partial credit. I've gotten problems completely right and he didn't give me any credit.
I hate this man. Would not recommend him in the slightest. The most sour person I've ever met before in my life. Least favorite person I've encountered at WVU and this is my junior year.
A nice guy that cares for his students, but overall a difficult class that your going to have to work hard in to recieve a good grade.
Awful teacher. All he cares about is people texting in class or if they are on a website on their computer. Tests are the worst because he passes out the tests in his own specific way and it takes FOREVER for the last row to reviece their test and no extra time is given. AVOID him at all costs!!
Confusing and Arid lectures. He uses the same types of examples for all kinds of different concepts. Every lecture has a question about the weight of a dog or an apple or something. The examples are so similar that they made the exams confusing
This man is the worst teacher I have ever had. With plenty of engineering classes I wasn't expecting this to be a tough class but this teacher made sure it is. Terrible teacher and a terrible personality. Just bad bad bad
I'd not recommend him. His lectures are extremely boring and he's a stickler about texting. The tests are fairly hard as well. The only good thing is the bonus points he offers.
This guy just makes this hard class harder than usual. His teaching methods are outdated and only cares if you're texting. He makes you go to his office... creep. If you have to take Stat 211, try to petition for Stat 201 which is the same class but no handwritten work. If that's not possible, take Sarah Quesen for 211. She's a much better teacher.
Awful teacher, hateful and unhelpful. Avoid at all costs
This man is by far the worst professor I've had in my life. He makes the material much harder than it really is by using outdated teaching methods and over-explaining simple topics such as simple addition. Will not do extra examples on the board if asked. The only thing h is concerned with in class is people texting. Rude, unprofessional and daft.
worse class i have taken.
This man is by far the worst professor I've had in my life. He makes the material much harder than it really is by using outdated teaching methods and overexplaining simple topics such as simple addition. Will not do extra examples on the board if asked. The only thing he is concerned with in class is people texting. Rude, unprofessional and daft.
Do NOT take this class with him. Is more concerned about people texting, than teaching. Teaching methods are archaic, and won't do more examples. Terrible personality. Undoubtedly the worst professor I've ever had.
Dr. Billings is inconsiderate, crass, and unlikable. His personality is lacking, and he is more occupied with what the students are doing than the actual lecture. He does not care about any issues students would have, and the slightest thing throws him off of his train of thought. The material is dull, and he makes it worse. Do NOT take him.
Great class. Great Teacher. I use the stuff he taught us every day in my job.
Worst professor I have ever had while at WVU. He is rude and makes the classroom environment have a lot of tension. He interrupts students while he/she is attempting to answer a question to tell them they are wrong and will not tell the class the "correct" way to answer a question. He is very degrading toward his students.
Professor Billings makes class extremely boring. I was interested in statistics prior to class but he speaks in such a monotone it is hard to pay attention. His lecture notes are outdated. When a student is texting he spends time lecturing the student to not text which takes away from the actual class for everyone. I would not recommend him at all.
Though he knows the subject, his teaching methods are bland and outdated. The course content is presented in the most boring way possible, often making me feel like he is just throwing formulas at me. Even though he is fair, I wouldn't recommend him if there is another option.
One of the easiest classes at WVU. Only needed a 53 on the final for an A. Final was not cumulative, and all exams were extremely fair. No graded homework. Easy (and useless) lab. Billings was a thorough teacher, and available at all times outside of class. Textbook can be found online for free. Would suggest this class and Billings to anybody.
Great professor. Always helpful.
GREAT PROFESSOR. MAKES STATS EASY.
Absolute BEST professor in the Stat. Dept. I passed the class - and then passed the SAS BASE Certification Exam. Many Thanks to Dr. Billings
Mr. Billings is a very good teacher. Sometimes can be a bit grouchy though. He is really crazy about people having phones out. I failed stats once and then passed when I had Mr. Billings as my teacher.
Stats 211 can eat up a lot of time expecially if you are not a math wiz. But Billings tells you everything you need to know to pass the class. I hate math and stats but was till able to get an A.
Worst teacher ever. If you have to take stats and have little interest in it, goodluck with this guy. He always keeps you to the last minute too. He's not a cool teacher at all. His teaching methods suck.
Save yourself the extreme boredom and do not take this class. He lectures with handwritten black and white notes and does not keep the attention of the class.
Terrible guy, terrible class. Just terrible.
I actually enjoy statistics but not with Billings. Classes were so boring, and he will flip if you get out a phone. Not to mention, you have to go to class. He takes attendance. Lab is a complete waste of time. They should just call it "quiz time". At least the TA's are nice, but the computer software is confusing and you wont really learn anything
Awful Person. Rarely in a good mood during class. Very rude to students. No Helpful. Very rough grader. Lectures are not helpful. He honestly shouldn't be aloud to teach.
Worst class I've ever taken. Class is beyond boring, I would only go when a test was coming up so I knew what was on it. He doesn't do anything on ecampus so you have to go in order to know when the tests are. He grades extremely tough, I'm a senior engineering student and I'm just trying to get a C in here and get out. Take someone else.
A.B Billings is an overall great guy but can be very boring. Essential that you go to class because he gives a ton of extra credit especially the first month! Equal to about half a letter grade! Tests are hard but if you study his notes you will be fine. Focus on doing well in stat lab also and you should get an A!
professor was not organize and talk down to us in class.
professor was organized but needs some training in terms of how to teach and work with questions in class. not bad or good, just average with the potential to be better.
Terrible class with him. Seems like he could be a nice guy but he comes into class so grumpy. Really had no idea what was going on by mid-semester and that was with me going to every class. Became apparent to me that skipping class or going would give me the same grade. Awful teacher. Take someone else.
Teacher is very grumpy and HATES when students talk or text during class, also has a habit of talking down to students. Lectures are boring but gives lots of extra credit if you attend regularly. Tests are confusing at times, and lab quizzes can be hard. Homework isn't too hard.
His lectures are very long and boring; He lectures using his handwritten notes on a projector, and basically reads them the entire length of the lecture. He expects students to ask specific questions so he can answer them, but he won't answer other questions. He will call people out for using their phones in class, and he has a bad temper.
Billings will not answer questions that he does not deem necessary of his attention. If you need extra clarification, prepare to hear something along the lines of "I don't have time to hold up class for one student".
He seems like a nice guy who knows the material very well. But he is not a very good teacher. He has no patience whatsoever and questions are often met with insult. He rushes through the material in class and complains to the 20 of us who are left out of 100+ that half of the class is failing and that we are to blame. Tests are very tough.
I didn't even have Billings for class and went to his office to get department approval to take his online class. Not only was he rude but he talked down to me and accused me of lying just to get in an online class which is ridiculous. If he talks to his students the way he talked to me a person he just met, he does not deserve his job.
Definitely not a class that is just a cake walk as it might seem at the beginning. Study the book questions and examples in the lecture notes because they are close to test questions. If a student tries to answer a question and is wrong, he will pretty much shame them into never answering a question again. Pretty comical to watch.
Tests are tough. Study from the book. On test day, make sure you get a seat up front because it takes him about 20 minutes to pass the test out. Grades on a point scale, so lab is important.
This is was probably my least favorite college course I've ever taken. Billings is the epitome of the cranky old professor that doesn't care about students. His tests are pretty rough, and he hands them out in a way that takes nearly 15 minutes of test time away. I currently have a 3.7, and I will probably receive a D in this class. AVOID HIM.
Terrible professor. He's rude, mean, and unfair. Do not take unless you have to. I can't believe he is still a professor.
By far the worst professor I've had at WVU. Incredibly rude and disrespectful to students. Will chastise students that answer the question wrong during class. He uploaded all his notes online at the beginning of the semester. Said attendance was mandatory but doesn't actually take attendance. No reason to attend class.
Lacks professionalism and is the most angry dude I've ever met in my life. Aside from being a terrible teacher that lacks writing and social skills, he seems to humiliate anyone he can. I'd have work right after his class and he would take the class 5-6 minutes beyond it's allotted time so I'd leave anyway and he'd go crazy. Worst professor at WVU.
Billings is a rude person to the point of being evil to his students. He appears to come to class glassy-eyed to the point you'd think he was stoned out of his mind. He acts like he is so much better than everybody and is the only perfect person that has ever lived. If you ask a question he demeans you to the point of verbal abuse. MEAN MEAN PERSON
I've had Billings for 215 and 511, and these classes are honestly not difficult (and I'm AWFUL at math/stats). What you put in is what you get out of it. Come to class, he adds notes into the lectures. He's also accessible outside of class and LOVES when you see him in person. Gives partial points on tests and quizzes. Extra credit is given, too.
Attendance isn't required and really won't help. Everything's online. But tests are hard.
AB Billings is overall a good professor, but lectures can be VERY dry. Don't expect to get out of class even a minute early, either. BUT if you come to class, study, and work a little, an A is attainable. Allows a full front and back 8.5x11 sheet of info that you make yourself for 1st exam, 2 for 2nd exam, etc. Also lots of extra credit.
I wouldnt recommend taking him hes not a good teacher I literally didnt learn anything in this class and our class average on one of our test was 56% it was a really hard class and he made it harder
Many of the prior students who wrote here are completely out to lunch regarding Professor Billings. He is a very, very good teacher. He is very helpful, pleasant and kind. I highly recommend him if you really want to learn statistics.
AB says he'll give partial credit, but does so in an unusual way. He won't give you credit if you do the right work with the wrong values for variables that you find earlier in the question. Does give extra credit, but lectures are boring.
Professor Billings is not a good professor he does not explain well and his test are confusing and do not match the lecture nor the homework. I would not recommend taking him, HOWEVER, he gives extra credit throughout the semester which is probably the only reason I am passing.
Billings is a reasonable man, he tries to make Statistics as interesting and fun as possible. That said, it's Statistics. Best professor for the class, and he will make you laugh if you go to lecture long enough. Gives tons of extra credit and you can make information sheets for the exams. If you study some, an A is very attainable.
The lectures can be rough at times, but going will only benefit you, as Billings gives out tons of extra credit assignments. He is clearly very passionate about his subject and tries to make students enjoy a normally dry subject. He allows for information sheets on all tests, which are extremely helpful on exams. Definitely take him if possible.
