This professor is very well-prepared on his subject matter, and clearly enjoys the subject that he is teaching. He occasionally has a tendency to teach 'above the students head' but a quick reminder brings him back down to the average person's level.
Professor Dawahare is an awesome professor. He is very helpful, and is very intelligent in the field of theory. I would recommend him to anyone who needs to take theory, or I would say just take him for any class that he teaches...It is well worth it.
I had Dr. Dawahare many years ago during his very first semester there at CSUN. He was brilliant then and by the looks of it he has only improved. He really made me work for my A and I remember a lot from the class, even some 10 years later.
Dawahare is a very intelligent teacher who really engages the class in a very personable and easy matter. He is one of the best. The text though is hard! Focus on the Eliot's "The Waste Land" in American lit and reread everything in his theor
amazing class. i never wanted to miss it. he is way hot & that is worth going even if you don't like the topics. lectures are great and he is always in his office to help (with a line out the door). not an easy A by any means though...
You could learn much from this man (a statement not applicable to most of the english faculty). He is firmly rooted in Marxist ideology, but nonetheless is tolerant -- even encouraging -- of other theories. Take his class.
professor dawahare is incredibly smart, so he can be intimidating at first. but he really is a nice guy and is willing to help. the readings will get difficult at times, no way around that. just be a good lamb and keep up, and you'll be fine.
he is so amazing to look at and listening to speak speak is that much better! i wish i had him for every class.
Professorr Dawahare is incredible. Theory is certainly not an easy subject, yet Dawahare makes it quite clear. He seems very genuine in helping students.
One of the greatest teachers and english is not my best subject!
Extremely sensitive to the needs of his students. Very caring. He made me feel welcome from the very first day I entered the University. It was a great experience knowing Anthony. Hope you are well and still creating.
An awesome professor! So far one of my favorites of all the English department. He picks fascinating readings and at the same time helps you to learn the material really well. He's organized, thoughtful, and interesting!
This guy was a strange cat. But he seemed nice enough. But let me just say as a public service announcement, literary theory is the jargon of satan.
If you need theory class take it only with Dawahare! He made a horrible subject fun.I will be forever grateful. Read, show up!,take notes, ask questions, and you should be fine. Would take again. One of the best profs. at CSUN
very tough class, can be a tough grader, but i learned SO much in this class and he is such a nice guy. he is the perfect teacher if you are looking for a serious class taught by a serious yet really nice human being.
I loved him. I enjoyed that I actually felt smarter each time I walked out of his class. I took him twice and will do it again in Grad. school. Makes you enjoy tough subjects.
He's gloomy like Eeyore. He seems sad and depressed but it's endearing (not scary). So if you're looking for an upbeat, joke-a-minute prof. - take someone else. Aside from that, great class and the readings reflect Dr. Dawahare. Serious and sad subject matters, but thought provoking and interesting.
I like him because he's quiet and mild-mannered, like my dad. He makes confusing texts easy to understand. His lectures and his expectations are clear. Skim, show up, take good notes, and you'll do well. His class isn't wild and crazy, but he is a good teacher and you will learn a lot from him.
Very quiet, intelligent man who has an incredible grasp of material but not of the classroom. Students who don't do the work or are full of themselves get away with taking over class. He's too shy and openminded to tell people they're wrong, which is good, I guess, if you are.
his lectures are filled with wonderful information but his monotone voice will put you to sleep really fast. He divides the grades evenly between 4 assighnments ect. which is hard and he also grades very hard.
He gives a midterm, a final and a paper along with various 4pt quizes that are abstract & obscure, don't plan on getting 4pts on each quiz. The class is difficult but he tries to help. He likes class participation but he doesn't tell you when you're wrong. See him for your paper and he will help. Prepare for your GPA to drop. He's an O.K. teacher.
Nice in class, yet brutal when grading
boring, but not too difficult
Ugh, oh the amount of paper that I killed writing for that class. His journal assignments are hellish, and the class discussions never quite make sense. In going from point A to C he gets lost at B... you'll need patience for this one...
Great prof who knows his material and the broad range of integrated, comprehensive links between literature and real life. He is demanding but exceptionally capable in inspiring students to succeed. I thoroughly enjoyed his courses and highly recommend him. You'll learn much more than just literature.
Dawahare is one of the best professors at CSUN. He is incredibly smart and has the unique ability to get very dense material across in a clear manner. Show up prepared to class and take VERY good notes and you will be just fine in this class. Oh, and study hard for his exams.....they are not easy.
Very interesting class but very very difficult. The exams require time and effort, as do the readings. The readings are interesting for the most part and will teach you lots. Challenging and rewarding lectures and subject matter. He has a peculiar sense of humor but is quite funny at times.
This Professor is like Elvis and I'm sure all the females here want to get hot and heavy with this guy, hence the high ratings. But if you're a guy like me, I must say his exams are tough and the class itself was difficult as hell(pop-quizzes galore!) Praise the Lord I just barely passed.
Until an "Introducing Dawahare" or "Understanding Dawahare" text is printed, good luck to you. You must teach tourself and/or form study groups. I found that my classmates and I understood eachother more than we ever understood Dawahare's "teaching" style.
He, like other college professors, could used appropriate teaching strategies by addressing the multiple intelligences, but he was all lecture. He, like most of the professors in college, are poor teachers. I learned about the critical theorists without his help. All the professors at CSUN need to take education courses before they teach!
I have to say, if you've had a problem with ALL of the professors you've had at CSUN then maybe the issue isn't actually with them. That aside, Dawahare is not "easy": he expects you to do the reading and show up. Quizzes are quite basic but you don't really know when one is coming. Exams will test your note-taking and ability to apply concepts.
His class is exhausing. If you think he's cute, wait till you get your tests back, you may change your mind. He spends 20 minutes telling the class how bad they did on the test and apparently doesn't think he's in some way responsible. He's a smart guy, but not a great teacher
He's smoking hot... which almost makes any class you take with him worth it. He's tough and conventional in his expectations. He's clear about what to expect from the onset... See him during his office hours and he's most helpful when it comes to midterm and final papers.
Dr. Dawahare is intimidating because he wants his students to stand up to par with grad students. It is not him with Major Critical Theories--it is the class; a difficult and new concept and area of study for most. He wants to push you to the limit and when you leave you'll have a great sense of accomplishment. Enroll if you're a true college st
Of course he is hot. More importantly, he's brilliant, and while this occasionally causes him to drift off into his own little space, his lectures are for the most part grounded and engaging. He concocts very "interesting" prompts for both the essay and the examinations; you'll have to know the material well and actually do the reading. Imagine.

crit theory is an amazing class, and Dawahare is brilliant in his knowledge of it. If you're ready to genuinely spend time with the material and actually want to learn, take him. If you want to go the easy route and spend an entire semester wallowing in one or two theories, take the other guy.
Dawahare is gonna be hard on the quizzes, tests, and paper. There is no doubt about that. He's also very intelligent and soft spoken but yet he is approachable and nice. This is not an easy class. So, if you're looking for a challenge, take this class and of course, in the end, you'll learn a lot.
The material is very hard, and although I did okay in the class, took notes and was there everyday I felt he wasn't a great teacher. He could have clarified things a lot more, and his knowledge of the material was a little iffy...I sat in the front...I know!!!!
Professor Dawahare's class was extremely challenging but well worth the effort. You MUST attend class and do the reading!! Sitting in front helps quite a bit. The material is often very abstract and difficult, but Dr. Dawahare is very accessible and will answer any questions you may have. If you put the effort in, you will get a lot out of it!
Dr. Dawahare is brilliant. He is also extremely helpful and his lectures are very thought provoking. The material can be very abstract. Attendance is crucial! This class has really given me new tools to understanding literature. Well worth the hard work! If you have the opportunity to take this class with Dr. Dawahare, don' waste it
This is one of the hardest classes you will ever have to take, but if you must, you should take it with Dawahare. He is extremely patient and helpful. Keep up on the reading, ask questions, and visit him in office hours and you will be fine. Be ready for those pop quizes.
If you're looking for an easy A, then look elsewhere. This teacher will make you work for your grade. Attendance is mandatory, and keeping up with the reading is crucial. The prof is a nice and funny man though, but this is no excuse to slack off unless you want to retake the class.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He's accessible to students, clear in his explinations of some pretty difficult material, and still has a lot of interest in the material even though he teaches it every semester. If you need to take theory, take it with Dawahare. Like other say, you'll have to work for your grade. And ALWAYS read!
He makes theory interesting, and you can tell he really wants his students to succeed. Keep up with the readings, participate in discussion, ask questions, and you will do well. There are pop quizzes, but they aren't difficult if you keep up with the readings! One paper, a midterm and final. He's funny too.
He teachers about African American writers, yet he is afraid to use "the n word" even when he is reading a text out loud that uses it. And make sure you don't write "negro" in your writing or he'll mark you down, even if it is in quotes and you are using it to refer to a part in some text where it was used. He is afraid of his own subject.
I thought taking this prof, from all these comments, would be fun and I'd enjoy working for my grade. Instead, this jerk is vague and rambles about stuff that has nothing to do with helping you write your paper or take your exams. He goes on about himself and goes into useless tangents and compliments himself often with metaphorical back pats.
Professor Dawahare is one of the best, if not THE best, English professor I have taken in my past 3 years of college. He knows his subject inside-out, he is very clear, and he is very fair. You have to work hard to do well. It helps to go to class everyday and do the readings. He is one of those professors where I felt like I got my money's worth.
One of the best teachers at CSUN. Critical Theory is a hard subject so don't expect it to be easy. Although the class is difficult, I seriously doubt that any other prof could teach it as well as Dawahare. He is very clear on explaining the theories and if you just remember the main points about each theory you should at least pass the class.
People who gave him a bad review are crazy. This class alone is the hardest class you will take in your English degree, but to make it easier, take Dawahare. He really knows what he's talking about and I've never learned so much. There is a lot of reading and it is uber difficult but he really tries to clarify. Seriously, take him!
Not sure what all the bad comments on here are about. He expects nothing less than any other GOOD teacher: keep up with readings in order to understand class discussions. Pop quizzes are meant for you to show him that you read and remember the last class, nothing more. Not to mention, he's very easy on the eyes and has a dorky cuteness to him.
Teaches the class with a heavy textbook emphasis. Majority of the grade relies on midterm, final exam & a 7-pg paper he has you write. Knows critical theory is hard for many students & really wants you to understand. Is open to help. And yes, he is cute.
My biggest complaint about Dawahare, is that he constantly let certain students get the entire class off on inane tangents with exponentially decreasing relevancy to the course. Other than that, he was an ok professor. Tried to explain the theories as clearly as possible, the work load was fair, and I found him to be a pretty easy grader.
Dawahare knows his stuff. I have copious notes from his lectures (he JUST lectures; this is not for everybody, I know, but I loved every minute of it!) that I will use forever, the background and insights he provides are invaluable. A lot of reading, but all amazing texts. Only two exams, that's it. Just sit back and enjoy those amazing lectures!
Dawahare is one of the best professors at CSUN. This is my third class with him. I started with a summer 436 class. Though I was worried about taking such a difficult class in such a short time frame, 436 was such a great class I was inspired to continue into the MA program after my BA. I highly recommend this teacher.
The negative comments on here are ludicrous. Dr. Dawahare is not only the sexiest faculty member at CSUN, he's insanely brilliant. He will motivate and challenge you to become a better writer and reader, and you'll finish your degree nonetheless better for it.
GREAT PROFESSOR. KNOWS HIS MATERIAL. YES, IT'S A HARD CLASS, BUT YOU JUST NEED TO DO THE READING & TAKE GOOD NOTES. QUIZZES, A MIDTERM, A PAPER & A FINAL. IT'S HARD, BUT IF I MANAGED TO PASS, THEN SO CAN YOU! ALSO, HE'S GOOD LOOKING!
Prof Dawahare is by far one of the most intellectual people you will ever meet. Very cool...what he says and lectures about is pretty straight forward. Take good notes, DO THE READINGS, and participate in class you will do fine. Prof Dawahare is one of the smartest at CSUN...PERIOD. To boot, he is very easy on the eyes!
Prof. Dawahare is an incredible professor and will make 436 as comprehensible as it's ever going to get. Do the reading, pay attention, take extensive notes, and prep in advance for the exams. The final grade is based on a midterm, paper, and final.
Reading literary theory is an absolutely painful task to undertake, but the material is surprisingly useful for any lit class you ever take. Dawahare is brilliant at relating the difficult material, even if it still isn't perfectly clear.
Dawahare is not so bad. My only problem is his grading model, which is harder to pass and easier to fail. He should/need to offer more assignemtns to practice theories. Not an easy class but he is good though, he explains and tells you want he exactly wants in an exam or paper. Good class.
I have a lot of respect for Dawahare. Although I was not a fan at first, he is extremely passionate about the course material he teaches and is very helpful. BUT you must remember to ask for help! For those who are hesitant about approaching professors, push that aside and engage him. He will make the material intriguing and comprehensible.
He's a good Professor but I found the class to be very very boring. But maybe that's because I'm more into British Lit than American Lit. Prof. Dawahare is a fair grader and a good teacher though so I'd recommend taking him.
He isn't easy but he is extremely fair. If you attend every class, follow up on the readings, and take good notes, you're set. His exams aren't tricky nor are they too difficult as long as you keep up with everything. It's either you know it or you don't. He gives pop quizzes, a midterm, a paper, and a final. Use the intimidation to your advantage.
I really really wish that I took critical theory with Dawahare rather than Solomon. GO WITH DAWAHARE!!
Dawahare is a great professor who is clear about what he expects you to know. Try to read the readings prior to class there are quizzes, but they aren't too bad. Take good notes and make flash cards for the midterm and final exam. The paper was fare 5 pages and you only have to use the text book your bring to class EVERYDAY. He's great and cute :D
I don't understand the hype. He's good looking, but his lectures are stale. He concentrates on one specific passage of a text for nearly an entire class, with no seeming relevance to anything as a whole. We were often behind and ended up skipping texts that were originally assigned. I learned more researching the texts myself than from his rambles.
Very helpful professor, he is focused on how well you learn. Offers great ideas for you to improve your writing and gives feedback after every essay to help perfect your writing.
Hard class but great professor, no homework just have to get ready for three big midterms. One paper that's 4-5 pages. Worth your time if you don't miss more than two class sessions. Dawahare is definately a professor you need to take if you're in the English department at CSUN.
Intelligent, respectful professor. Interesting class and structured well with discussionlecture.
Soft-spoken and polite. Intellectually engaging and really enjoys the material he teaches, but is not dynamic nor socially energetic. Sit near him so you don't miss what he says. Very approachable and helpful in office hours.
Dawahare is highly intelligent. Having him for theory class was an amazing experience. I remember things I learned because he explained them so well. I use what I've learned in other classes still. He is sensitive to each topic, and does justice to each theory. I can't imagine any teacher doing a better job.
Dawahare expresses a great amount of reverence towards the authors included in lit theory, making his lectures great. The best thing about this teacher is clarity, he describes these theories in a way that makes sense, and he is very clear on his expectations of the class. No surprises, just make sure you read and show up. 2 exams, essay, journal.
Great Professor! He explain theory incredibly well, has interesting lectures and is always willing to help out with further explanations. The content is hard to grasp at time, so get ready to read and study as the tests are also tough. This is not an easy class, but with hard work, an A is easily possible. Highly recommended.
This class is pretty straightforward. The readings are long, boring, & confusing but he clarifies the theories in class. Take notes & regurgitate them on the test. Worked for me. Dawahare is a great professor & is always willing to clarify further. Also, don't buy the Waugh textbook. We never use it, refer to it or are tested on it.
A decent human being, knows his craft to the level of perfection. He is very interested in exploring untapped approaches, has a liberal mind and is not afraid to accept non traditional literary analyses. Case and point; my approach to Hamlet's chatacter. He loved the idea that Shakespear killled Hamlet because the society was not ready for change.
If you show up to class his lectures make everything so much clearer. MUST READ BEFORE CLASS! If you show up not having read you will have no idea what's going on, you may pass with a D or C but if you want anything higher you have to read. He'll answer questions, help with papers, and explain things more thoroughly if needed.
In addition to what everyone is saying he has a quirky sense of humor that somehow works for him. He does have his favs & calls on them, mostly cause they mirror his theoretical musings. I did learn alot & generalize it thru out my other classes. Read the material more than once, esp. Kant, Hegel, Butler, etc. or u won' have a clue!
The professor is easy, it's the subject matter that may be difficult to grasp easily. Midterm, essay, and a final. Participate to get the best learning experience. Office hours are usually packed. Study more than you think you need to, the subject is not your usual subject of memorization. Look for understanding - I suggest getting the Waugh text.
The theories themselves were often really difficult to understand, but he does his best to explain them concisely without over-simplifying them. Obviously lots of reading in this class. He's not a tough grader but it's also hard to bs your way through material this rich and complicated. Hes a great professor and every English major should take him.
The material is tough and for some reason he laughs at times that make it seem that he is a sadist like wen he is introducing us 2 Kant and Hagel!
Critical theories can be a hard class, but Dawahare does his best to explain things in a way that is easy to understand. Make sure you take good notes, dont skip class, & dont leave studying until the last minute if you want a good grade. Grade includes: Midterm & final - both consist of IDs & an essay question. 1 essay & participation points.
Dawahare is an amazing professor. The exams are difficult, so make sure you study! The essay is also pretty tough, so don't leave it until the last minute. However, I think every English major should take him if they want to improve their writing and understanding of literature. The class was just so interesting and fun and super worth it.
Honestly Professor Dawahares class is one of the toughest ones I have ever taken at CSUN. However if you make study groups and go to his office hours you WILL pass the class !
To Dawahare this class needs to be your life. You must do the readings and have a clear understanding of the works or you won't pass this class. Midterm and final: 6 Identifications and an essay (really hard). I got an A but I worked my butt off for it. Go to his office hours and try and he'll give you a passing grade. Good Luck.
He explains concepts VERY thoroughly. However, the theories are difficult; he may give a pop quiz each week. The midterm/ final have ID sections, where, in one page each, we identify the authors, titles and significance of five passages; also have a short essay. We have an out-of-class essay as well, and we are graded on participation. Recommended!
Dawahare is wonderful & really helps simplify complex theories. If you skip a class, you miss his lecture. Tests are based off of what he goes over in lecture. Don't think you can pass without a lot of effort. This class gives you a solid foundation in literature and critical theories that are applied in many other subjects as well. Work hard!
Dawahare is a extremely kind, helpful person. If you need help, he will help out--he gives very good lectures for the material that is covered, and you just REALLY need to be there to take notes, and ask questions. Read before each lecture, so that way it absorbs better. This is THE HARDEST CLASS I've taken. You really need to work hard & study.
Dawahare is a great professor. He is very knowledgable and eager to share it. If you go to his office hours, he will explain everything you're confused about. Don't be shy; he's there to help and he's always willing to do so. Of course, you do have to read, but since 436 is required for English majors we're supposed to do the reading.
Professor Dawahare is a great professor, he's always willing to help and available in his office hours. Be sure to stop by his office hours a couple times throughout the semester just to get a little extra help or for any clarification needed. This class requires a lot of reading and attention so take a light course load when taking the class.
Dawahare is one of the best professors I've ever had. The class is by no means easy but if you pay attention and write down the things he says, you will pass. He is always more than happy to answer literally any questions and if you don't understand any point that he's made, ASK. He's great.
I took his 525 RAM course. Just do your reading (prepare to read!), contribute to discussions, and do the written assignments. He is really knowledgeable and I really liked the assigned readings.
The man's a decent professor. He's passionate and all that good stuff but you need to just write everything he says down then spend 30 mins organizing what he said into something serviceable. Its very easy to get lost in a lecture If he was just more concise and efficient with his presentations and lectures then this class would be way easier.
436 will be difficult regardless of who you take, but Dr Dawahare really does his best to break down theories down to the basics. Do your best with the reading before class and take good notes during class. Beware there is occasionally pop quizzes on readings! If you need help, he is very approachable and will answer any and all questions.
Super knowledgable and informative! VISIT OFFICE HOURS!! Can't stress that enough. Reach out to classmates and make a group chat/study sessions! Lectures are power points + he provides a study guide (but make your own too). Start studying early (around week 3 for the midterm), ask questions, and prepare to reread readings twice over. Good luck!
Very lengthy class, a lot of lectures and short quizzes. The tests are like mini-essays.
Professor Dawahare is very knowledgeable and expects the most out of his students. Expect lengthy lectures and pop quizzes. Each quiz is 1 question and worth 100 points. You are graded on pop quizzes, participation, an essay, midterm, and final. Dr. Dawahare is really nice and approachable. I recommend going to office hours and participating.
He is great at making difficult concepts easier to understand. Occasional pop quizzes, so do the reading. One essay, no research beyond primary text. Midterm and Final exams consist of 6 or so IDs and a short essay. It's a required class; you might as well take someone who is great at teaching it, like Dr. Dawahare.
Amazing professor for such a tough class! He never lost hope in any of his students and was determined to help all of us pass. He gave amazing feedback to every assignment we had and my classmates were super helpful. The pop quizzes are very easy if you do the weekly readings.
Took this class over the summer. We had 6 discussions, and 3 exams (5 IDs and 1 short essay for each exam). He is a fair grader make sure to quote his lectures you will get full points and cite passages from the material. The class is difficult you will need to work hard for your grade.
Class was tough but fair Mid-term, final, and short reading quizzes Attendance required to understand the material Easier to pass if you read Material is tough to get through, try and read through it, take notes on what you think it means Lecture heavy but he made it funny included the class in the discussion DO THE READING AND ASK QUESTIONS
Graded on pop quizzes about the readings; a midterm and final where you identify the author and title of 5 out of 6 items and explain their significance, and write a timed essay; and 1 take-home essay. ENGL 275 with this professor had the same structure. Can be a tough class due to the memorization involved.
Many of my classmates had trouble understanding the material, but if you come to class and simply do the readings, you'll understand everything! All presented in the lecture will likely be included in exams. He's a great explainer and definitely loves what he's teaching :)
Graded on pop quizzes; a midterm and final where you identify the title, author and significance of 5 out of 6 items and write an essay; a take-home essay; and participation. This professor had the same grading system for ENGL 275. Can be a tough class due to the memorization and exam essays involved. (I accidentally submitted 2 reviews.)
I will admit that this was a very difficult course but as its a requirement, Dawahare is a great choice for a professor. He's patient, passionate, and kind. Aside from the pop quizzes, it's be important to note that the only portions of your grade come from the midterm, final, and participation(attendance, which he takes at the beginning of class).
Nice guy and actually cares about his students success. I've taken him three times for several courses, and he seems to grade the same in all. 3 major test, each 25% of grade. For essay's I noticed as long as you give a TON of detailed examples from the text you will ace it!! ALSO make sure you participate often in class.
Dawahare is an amazing professor who enunciates and urges students to ask questions if confused. He writes his lecture notes messy, but he goes into extreme detail so you can understand whats going on. He has pop quizzes (one question, graded 100/100 or 0/100 if you fail it), and 3 major exams. He's extremely cool, just pay attention!
I loved Professor Dawahare and loved this class! He truly enjoys what he's teaching and clearly enjoys engaging with students. Speak up in class, even if just to ask a question! He will always answer thoughtfully. Make sure to write down whatever he writes on the board-those are the key things that he wants you to mention on tests.
Its a hard class bc the class was graded basically on only 3 exams & missing even 3 qs drops to an 85%. The pop quizzes were 1 super easy qs. They don't help your grade but getting one wrong severely damages your percentage. Participate!! bc that can help with a borderline grade but also the content is difficult & he's very good at teaching
He is always encouraging others to ask qs and good at explaining the material. Pay attention to lectures bc there are 3 timed writing exams. There are also 1 multiple choice or t/f qs that are super easy if you do the reading. The class is very straightforward and he is amazing at what he does.
Had for both 436 & 475 (same grade). MUST TAKE NOTES or you will not pass. 3 exams, 1 is ID's, 2nd is an essay, 3rd is combo of the two. Does not really use Canvas. Take advantage of office hours & tutors if available. Pop quizzes are easy if you do the readings. If you pay attention you will learn a lot from this class. Fantastic teacher!
Professor Dawahare is great at explaining the material, though the class can be challenging due to the exams and pop quizzes. Attending lectures and doing the readings are key. Unstuckstudy was very helpful for studying and practice.
I did not find myself bored of any of the assigned readings. It was a summer course so there was ALOT of reading to do, however his lectures made the readings very enjoyable. He isn't much of a tough grader, just show your familiarity with the material and you'll be fine! Dawahare is one of those instructors who genuinely want you to succeed.
