Awesome prof, wants students to learn, sense of humor is a must
Drives in the carpool lane even though he's a single driver... What a bad man!

Very funny, Class sucked though, but not his fault. it was a stats class when it should have been a polisci class
Very good and organized lectures. Puts a lot of effort into class and cares about his students!
The best teacher I had in college. Slightly irreverant, he makes the class fun *and* interesting.
tests and quizzes hard. papers are subjective to his TA, seek help and he'll provide it. funny, good man, weekly assignments seem tedious but turn out to be helpful. pay attention and do the work.
I had him for POL S 204 and just had to take another class with him. Absolutely approachable and the lectures are never boring. Love the daily cowboy hat he wears.
Most entertaining class I've ever taken. He blasts music related to the topic, pretends to be a crazy cookie monster, and wears cowboy boots that look about three sizes too small. What a stud!
Freakin awesome class!
I LOVE THIS TEACHER! He began every class with funky music, his lectures were always hilarious, and he gives away prizes to students AT LEAST once a week. AWESOME TEACHER!!!!

This guy is a bad ass mother fffffffff
Great teacher. Perhaps the only un-biased prof. at UW?
hardly ever went to class (too early) but he is very enthusiastic and passionate about what he teaches.. his lectures are very clear with fun powerpoint presentations. however he doesn't post his powerpoints, so if you must, attend class and you should get
Poli Sci as a Social Sci - great class! Funny, smart, engaging prof. Highly recommend!
One of my favorite professors I have ever had, even though he was a little more conservative than I am.
Loves to make people laugh during his lectures. He is very engaging and cares about the attentiveness of his students a lot. Gives out prizes just for fun every now and then. Learn about his little son, so yea definitely recomend him.

My organs are bouys floating on a sea of gin
Classes are the highlight of my day, but I tried a few TA's and they all suck this year
Great Prof! Kept his own political tastes out of an atmosphere where it easy to get off track and lost. Well thought out arguments, well explained, and alot of fun to have class with! Great class/ professor.
His the best teacher. He just made me more intrested in pol sc. he totally knows his job. i have not met any professor better then him. Hahah his story about his son is always entertaining..... . Way to go Professor Gail.... ***big smile***
Gill is an interesting person. Though, I feel like I am being taught political economics from some guy that has never been off the farm. He is arrogant, his lectures are boring contentless. He does not teach differing views of political economics only his own. For an education avoid him like the plague. If you like attention ****s he's your man.
Don't let Gill's cowboy suit fool you. He is a highly intelligent teacher (Albiet way too conservative) who puts forth the concepts of his class in a highly engaging way that makes you learn. His testing style is easy as you get questions in advance. However, his TA grading is based on a chart that makes it really difficult.
Always surprising, always funny, always prepared with powerpoint presentations (which he's prone to sneak in pictures of his son). Great guy, brilliant orator, really knows his subject--just because he looks like an extra in 'Blazing Saddles' does not mean he's a dumb redneck. His lectures were the best I've ever taken at UW.
this guy simply kicks ass he is easy and I learned a lot in class if you get him be glad.
great prof!
One of the best profs I've ever had!
not what i expected in a poly econ class but i learned a lot more than i expectd to. i had this class two years ago and i still keep usng it in my other classes and talking with friends and family
Very grasping and entertaining lectures!
Not the best of the best, but I get the impression that he is up there. He's kind of entertaining, but his antics become somewhat old and tiresome, especially involving an immaturely done final that really did make me mad. Overall I learned a lot about a variety of countries. I put in a solid effort and got a 3.4
He's the whole package: brilliance, entertainment, helpfulness, clarity, and he looks like a cowboy!
Found him very interesting and engaging. He made it clear in lecture what he thought was important. I enjoyed the class a lot.
Funny. Creative. Enthusiatic. Engaging. Clear. His exams come from the textbooks, packets, and his lectures. He has REALLY COOL powerpoint slides for all the lectures but doesn't post 'em on his site so attending his lectures is a GOOD IDEA (otherwise you might be losing those IMPORTANT lecture-related question points on exam)!
This is a professor for anyone who wants a laughably easy intro poli sci class. He teaches it as if you were in middle school, and doesn't hide his conservative biases very well (just look at the book he uses). He tries to make up for this by being cute and funny, which works for some but I felt like it was a huge waste of my time.
He's an okay professor though perhaps a tad overrated by poli sci students. I feel like the act gets a little tiresome but he is genuinely smart and has some great advice and information on his website
Interesting guy. Unapologetically loud and abrasive but honest silly and self depricating enough to be tolerable. Very easy class, but if you're interested in the topic gill provides a lot of outside input. Lectures are entertaining if childish. Look through the website for useful content. Online test review guides are very comprehensive.
The class is essentially review for anyone who is knowledgeable about economics. His lectures are entertaining, but also sort of childish. The exams were not hard but you do have to go to class and read all the material. Gill basically takes examples straight from the lecture and the readings and puts them on the exam. Lecture notes are NOT online.
Best prof I have had at UW and I am a junior now. Extremely intelligent. He is more than happy to accommodate students outside the classroom if they have an extended interest. Yes, he is conservative. I am liberal. But debating/learning from him has broadened my horizons. It's a silly reason to think less of a professor (or anyone). A++++++++
Interesting lectures. Likes to talk a lot about his books sometimes. Circles in lecture sometimes but overall a good professor and fun to listen to.
Gill is super nice/funny... content is weak. Don't take this class if you have any interest in Religion and World Politics. Contrary to the title, this is a course on Christianity (through the reductionist lens of Rational Choice) and Western (specifically U.S. and Western European) politics from an upper-class-white-evangelical-male persepctive.
Prof. Gill is a great teacher, i highly recommend going to the lectures since that's where a lot of the test questions come from. He also drops hints and gives bonus question answers during lecture. He also is engaging and you can tell he is very passionate about teaching.
Gill is nice, funny, helpful and responds emails instantenously. He ties in all of the major concepts together so his students can see a bigger picture/pattern of development. I wont be taking RELIG POL bcuz it focus too much on Christianity, but it looks like a decent class. Prof knows a lot, and I learned a lot in his class. Gill, you're hired!:)
Useful class that compares federalism vs. centralism, presidentialism vs. parliamentarism, and plurality vs. PR electoral systems. Also focuses on developmental paths of Britain, Germany, Russia, and others. Interesting guy for sure!
Gill goes out of his way to keep the class interesting and entertaining. He also enjoys playing music before and after class and has a very great selection (Queen anyone?!). This class is interesting and I highly recommend this professor!
Very funny and original, knows how to make fun of history and keep things entertaining. I would definitely recommend him.
I switched into Gills Comparative Politics class after the quarter began. I am so glad I did. Gill is intelligent, witty, entertaining, and is able to teach a large load of material without it being overwhelming. Attendance is a must in quiz section, and there is a lot of reading involved. I would recommend this class to all UW students!!!
Lectures are interesting almost always (assuming you like POL S). His ppt slides include tons of pictures and ppt transition. But during the later half of the quarter he started to seem...shall I say..a bit arrogant. Albeit he got a PhD so he could rightfully be, but a wee bit more modesty will gain him some respect from the more serious students.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He drills topics into your brain and it is very clear what to watch for on the tests. Speaking of tests, they are the most direct and straightforward you could imagine. Use the study guides and go to lecture and you'll do great
i had missed some of other classes in my uw life so far however i never missed any single lecture of his! he is just so enthusiastic! (even though he's very biased which made me feel offensive) i love all the materials he covered during the quarter! highly recommend his class! :)
I've taken his 270, 307, and 204 classes and got a 4.0, 3.9, and 3.9 respectively. My favorite professor at UW. It's easy to do well if you attend lecture. I barely did any reading because he or the TA reviews the basics of each book. He's very enthusiastic and a hard-core libertarian - made me reconsider my liberal assumptions.
Gill continues to be one of my favorite professors at the University of Washington. This course was challenging at times, but Gill drills the concepts so you cannot forget them. Some people do not like his sarcasm, I though found it entertaining. The course is a little book heavy, but with attending the lectures and QS you will do great!
I have now taken all three of Gills classes. Religion 307 was the most challenging, although I truly enjoyed it. The concepts are not far-fetched, or offensive. The term paper is graded harder than I think was necessary, but the tests are straight forward and not too challenging. I would recommend this class!
I took this course online, and it was so clear and rather easy. There are weekly assignments, but they're not hard at all. Didn't read any of the textbooks all quarter, didn't need to. He makes a dry subject fun, and you'll get used to his unique humor.
Absolutely the worst class and professor I've had so far. this was taught less like a pol s class, more like a history class. Impossible to know what the exams would look like. Lectures were boring, too long, and he would often go off on bitter rants about grad school, his personal life, or the past. Absolutely awful professor, avoid him!
This professor is too caught up in trying to impress everyone and talk about how he is a member of the "intellectual" class to teach anything useful. I can't take hearing him talk about useless stuff all day, and his textbook is written straight out of a thesaurus, it's actually hilarious how hard this guy tries, but still sounds like a tool.
Taken both 270 and 307, and I love both. Gill is an absolute riot, and he has a gift for teaching market economics with clarity. You will learn a lot, you will genuinely enjoy coming to lecture, and the tests are honestly not very hard. Even the readings (for 270) are fun, you will, like, want to pick up the book.
Gill is the man. Great teacher, energetic, fun to listen to, plus he wears a cowboy hat every day. The tests aren't bad if you study and know your stuff. attendance is not mandatory but you will likely have a hard time catching up if you do not attend
Prof. Gill's lectures are almost always entertaining and make it easy to learn the material. He also uses a lot of games and small assignments that also help when thinking through the topics in this class.
I just finished up his 307 class this week and I learned a lot. Focuses primarily on Christianity, and has a small section on Islam. He brings interesting arguments to the table, but is so caught up in being a "rebel" that it's hard to take him seriously most of the time. He also LOVES white papyrus on black backgrounds...
Awesome prof! Randomly ended up in a poly sci class my freshman year due to my fig and Gill is awesome! Make sure you go to class, do the readings, and DISCUSS w/ classmates for the exams. He's an awesome guy and one of the best prof's I've ever had a UW. You do need to study for this class though!
Excellent professor. His lectures are always clear and easy to understand. He assigns a lot of reading, but nothing too overwhelming. His exams are reasonable and fair; not too hard, but you still need to attend lecture to get a good grasp on the content. He's really enthusiastic and also very funny! I highly recommend him!
The class wasn't what I was expecting going in, but it was interesting and informative nonetheless. Gill is great at retaining student attention, and is very approachable.
The amount of reading and information this professor expects students to know for exams is flat-out ridiculous. Don't take this if you're looking for a fun or easy class. The information presented is interesting but not worth the amount of effort required to do well in the class.
Professor Gill was hand down amazing and entertaining!! :D Awesome and nice guy who really interacted with his students. Of course I had to study a bunch for tests but it was really interesting and I learned a lot in comparison to my science and math classes. The material sticks with you and he is so funny and has a great personality!
Very entertaining class and a great professor! A lot of reading is involved, but it's definitely worth it. I feel like I learned a lot from him and will be looking to take all of the other classes he offers. Class is NEVER boring with Gill.
Definitely not my favorite professor. Demeaning in my opinion, and treats class like a 3rd grade level. Lots of people like him, but wasn't my style. Tries to hard to teach, and be a cowboy.
Gill is a very entertaining and fun professor. He makes his concepts interesting when they could easily be dry and chooses textbooks that are easy and genuinely a good read. He is also a lenient grader so there is a good chance you will end up with a pretty good grade if you put in the effort.
Prof. Gill obviously cared about the material and the amount that his students learned. However, he spent a lot of time going off on tangents and examples rather than the actual material. The class has a clear libertarian bias which seems to be taken too far at some points. With an average amount of work, you should have no problem doing well.
Though he provides study guides, it's hard to take notes off of the readings and lectures. Both are hard to follow because of lame jokes and stories instead of concrete facts and explanations. Nothing is straight forward. If this class isn't required for your major, don't take it.
I've taken 204, 270, and 307 with Gill, and 270 was my favorite. He's a great professor who is clear and makes great explanations and connections with the material. 307 is the most challenging, since the readings are a little more challenging than in 204 or 270. Overall, great professor - highly recommend taking a class from him!
Always a lot of reading but, after taking 2 classes (307 and 280) from Gill, I would definitely recommend him to anyway. He always gives clear explanations with multiple examples. His tests are straight forward and he never tries to "trick" you. The large amount of reading is the only downfall but, most of the books are fairly interesting
Although a bit annoying, his lectures are very helpful and clearly lays out what is needed in order to do well
I liked Prof Gill's teaching style; he is super organized, clear, and his lectures are always entertaining. However, he is biased, and consequently, all of his materials are as well. He can be condescending, and makes it a point in his lectures (read: tangents). I differ from him politically, but still got a lot of value from his course.
Professor Gill's classes are somewhere between stand-up comedy and a TED talk. Even if you disagree with his politics, he's a good professor and you'll still enjoy the class.
Best professor I've had at the UW, would definitely recommend! Lots of reading but you only need to understand the concepts and key points.
One of the more unique classes I've taken, political economy 270 is either a love or hate class. Gill is an avid lecturer and his lecturesreadings are unique yet interesting at the same time. Gill teaches from a very liberal point of view, if you agree with him you will enjoy this class. Pretty straightfoward tests with simple weekly assignments.
Prof Gill is really funny and kind of ridiculous. He is straightforward in lecture as long as you can figure out the relevance of his analogies. Easy weekly homework assignments and very straightforward midterm and final. Must do the reading! Tests are in class, written, and you need information directly from books and lecture.
Professor Gill is an amazing professor! His lectures are engaging, and he is very funny. Course material was interesting (connecting economics to religion). Quite a lot of reading, but with his reading guides he posts on Canvas, it is manageable. The midterm and final is very straightforward, and it is not out to get you. Overall, would recommend!
Professor Gill is one of the best professors I have had at UW. The reading was reasonable, and he gives several examples of concepts through skits and creative explanations that are hard to forget. The test are very straight-forward as long as you go to class and section. Gill is very passionate about what he teaches.
Charismatic if unclear (at times), Anthony Gill makes a tough and relevant subject interesting and relocatable to students
He really cares about what he is teaching and whether or not the students understand it. He's a very engaging professor and highly recommend taking his class. He is also very helpful if you go to office hours.
Spends most of lecture making jokes about obscure things (Jack Black, Wood Carvings, Carnivals) and less time actually relating the stuff to political economy. Will give a clear definition and then spend 20 minutes going into a convoluted example that leaves you confused at the end of it. Incredibly biased!
I had him for the EFS class, and he was great. Its a lot of reading but the tests are straighforward- there are no surprises. Not an easy class, but I wouldn't call it hard. He's nice, funny, and understanding. He is so interested in what he teaches and that makes him a great prof. Just get ready to read, but his class is interesting.
Just took his EFS class and loved it. Great professor with very straightforward tests. Super interesting lecturer and he really cares about his topic. Do the readings and pay attention in lectures and this class is easy.
Loved the class. Not so sure about Gill. My TA is really what is making it worth it for me. Doing the study guides is really what will get you a good grade. He makes zero effort to hide his political views, which is annoying, but it doesn't really impact his teaching. If you do the work, the class is not too bad though.
I loved this class! His lectures were engaging and he really cares about his students. It's difficult to study for exams if you don't read the books or attend lectures though.
Gill is the best professor I've ever had, hands-down. Definitely leans in a classically liberal direction along that of Hayek, which is unusual for UW. Clearly distilled concepts with solid examples. If you know the concepts from class and the readings, you shouldn't have too much trouble passing his tests. Lectures are interesting and fun.
Took this class for early fall start. It was amazing and I would suggest incoming freshman take it! Not too difficult and very relevant to everyone's daily lives.
Professor Gill rants for a long time about scenarios that have no relation to the class. He uses outdated political economy examples that he has used for years. Not once has he tried to apply basic concepts to the present world, a time that is very interesting for political economy. His jokes are not funny either!
If you're looking to learn about politics get out while you can- this class is primarily econ. The professor is incredibly arrogant but lacks basic historical knowledge and teaching skills- his lectures only left me confused. He also has a hard time keeping his own political views out of the content, and often tried to pass off opinions for facts.
Gill is funny and watching lectures are like watching a National Geographic documentary as in it is fascinating and educational. But there's a lot of essential reading plus the class doesn't actually cover politics like I hoped. But the class is irreplaceable in a way. Only a few people study this. Google economics of religion to test the waters.
Prof. Gill gave a top-notch class, always with a new surprise around the corner. Lectures were entertaining and informative, and Prof. Gill challenged us to think critically and thoroughly. Lots of reading, but the books are pretty good, particularly Leeson's "The Invisible Hook". Prof. Gill makes you work hard, but it's 100% worth it.
It's Gill. You already know who he is. 10/10
Prof. Gill's classes are always a treat, and this one was no exception. This seminar class featured excellent readings and incredibly strong discussion. By far one of the best classes I've ever taken.
I was really looking forward to this class (religion and politics, hello?), but Gill's teaching style ruined it. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he doesn't post his powerpoints online and goes through them super fast in class, tries to be funny but isn't, makes you buy his and his buddies' books for the class. + TA's don't really know how to help.
Gill is awesome. Lectures are fun, he is hilarious and you learn A LOT from going to class. Wish I could go back and take this class again!
Very supportive, accommodating, and funny professor.
Enthusiastic, but the distance between this professor and his students is palpable. It seems he enjoys giving lectures but would prefer a different audience. He might have been a decent instructor 15-20 years ago, but he seems thoroughly checked out now. Course readings are underwhelming and expensive. Extremely lenient grading policy.
There's a saying in the Poli sci circles ... you either love Gill or you hate Gill - and I freaking LOVE this man. He is HANDS DOWN my favorite professor in the department! The readings he assigns are phenomenal and he's a Solid lecturer. FYI he is a huge lockain along the lines of Hayek and mill - which is actually v beneficial to your learning
He supports price gouging and the privatization of natural resources. He completely ignores the fact that underprivileged people have been exploited at the hands of private property owners for centuries which has lead to the accumulation of wealth we see today. He speaks from a privileged perspective and will mock any student who challenges it.
panopto and lecture slides were not uploaded and he required everyone to take handwritten notes. he gives a lot of real-life examples to help understand the concepts, which helped me learn the material much easier. very entertaining. more about understanding concepts and being able to explain them than memorization
Gill is a firm believer in markets. He believes individual self interest will solve everything: the environment, organ donors, you name it. An intro Political Economy class should encompass all theories. Gill not only ignores Marx & Keynes theory,he outright dismisses them. The class should really be called "Intro to Classical Liberalism".
Professor Gill's lectures are the best I've ever attended and the amount of knowledge he's able to impart is really astounding. The class is reading heavy but all the readings are very interesting and he frequently incorporates his own research into the class as well. He's extremely funny, to the point, and makes content easy to grasp.
Exams are difficult he likes to put in a lot of things that were talked about briefly in lectures. Heavy readings and if you don't do them its going to be hard to pass, even if you do them it will be hard to pass. I had Christianna as a TA and she taught me more than Gill did make sure you get her for section its your only hope.
Never answered a question the entire quarter. You are just there to entertain his ego.
Probably the most interesting class I have ever attended. Prof Gill is a funny and interesting person, he made all his lectures damn crazy and fun to attend. All his lectures were recorded so don't miss out on any of them. All you need to do in this class is to be creative and punctual.
Professor Gill is extremely knowledgable in his field. He will explain conceptual topics in ways that anyone can understand. As long as you put effort in and challenge any preconceived ideas you might have, you will do well in his class. Remember economics isnt for everyone. Professor Gills class is very market-based, which I actually love.
Amazing online lecture setup, they're all prerecorded and the layout is very clear. Very interesting subjects and he knows what he's talking about. There are a lot of readings but you can get away with just skimming. About one assignment and a week but pretty short and easy if you watch lectures. need at least one discussion post a week, would rec.
Professor Gill is sweet and if you take his online classes, you can tell he really puts a lot of effort into his videos which I really appreciate. Sometimes, he explains it to you like a kid but personally, I don't mind and I like it. The concepts he teaches aren't too difficult, although the homework and exams aren't always straightforward.
Prof. Gill is probably the most passionate & innovative professor I've had to date. You can see how much he cares about his teaching through the way he describes concepts and connects assignments to real life. He's a great instructor for anyone new to economics. The course requires more thought than others but is worth taking.
This was my second class with Prof. Gill and I'm sad that I won't be able to take him again. He is probably the most passionate lecturer that I've ever had in college. Loves his subject and knows how to make it interesting for any student. He put so much effort into making his class engaging throughout the coronavirus shutdown, which paid off 100%.
the course was asynchronous which was nice and it was my second course with prof gill. He's a nice prof and knows a lot about what he does. There is a lot of work to do like weekly discussions/reading responses, and a paper in addition to the two exams. It can be tough if you don't fully understand the concepts but if you're interested I'd recommen
Professor Gill's class is an eye opener if you're interested in political science or religion. The lectures are engaging and Professor Gill is genuinely interesting and funny. The books you'll read in class are actually interesting to read and the text isn't dense or confusing. Read the content and watch the lectures and you will love this class.
Good prof. Love the hat.
Prof Gills 270 is one of the best classes Ive taken. Prof Gill is an amazing lecturer who knows how to make the material very interesting. He is very passionate about the material he teaches explains the material very clearly. It is a very writing-heavy class but deals with topics that are super interesting. Highly recommend.
This class was absolutely amazing. I didn't get to know Gill personally, but his lectures were really interesting and engaging. The course content is super fun to learn because you are taught real life concepts. He is super funny and easy to understand, you can tell how passionate he is. I would take this class again and again!
Warning: Gill bans using laptops/tablets/smartphones for notetaking in his classrooms. I would not take his classes again solely because this rule. He does fantastic lectures but he is very strict. Be sure to read the syllabus and rubric carefully!
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. Wish I could take more classes with Gill. We are fortunate to have him here at UW. Every day is like an adventure coming to class, and you wont be let down. Very strict about deadlines and rubrics, but also reasonable with his assignments. You will NOT be disappointed!
speaks to his students like they are 12 He is demeaning and seems arrogant at times He says class is not mandatory but won't post slides during Covid, in which sick students should not be attending class. Full of himself and very biased; would only take if you want to hear his outdated viewpoints, not a multifaceted class!!!
I would say he is one of the worst professors at UW Pol S department. His arrogance makes me so uncomfortable lmao. He is biased and so crazy about economic concepts, in which he embeds economic mindset into his course policy.
Students need to pay a 5 points fee for any grade appealing lol, and he only returns you 3/5 even if you successfully appeal. If he rejects your appeal, you lose 5 points automatically. It is unbelievable and makes non sense to me. The most helpful advice is probably: he has a strong ego. Even if he is wrong, you better not to challenge him. ^^
Taking his class is def my worst decision this year! If he ever checks this website, PLEASE! Put down your ego and listen to different worldviews! Stop being biased and seal yourself in that one outdated mind. Your paper prompts literally force me to answer in the way you like, but I am a human being who has my own thoughts.
Oh wow I wish if I have made a better decision last year to avoid suffering from his class this much. I tried super hard and got a 80 on my last paper. There are points taken off for explanation not detailed enough oh what? You asked 3 questions in a row and wanted me to address all of them below 650 words? Expected me to define every single word
Gill is definitely very knowledgable in his field but has VERY strict guidelines for students that can be unreasonable. His lectures are engaging as he integrates humor, but alternately his ego can make it feel like he’s just talking down at you. He’s not everyone’s cup of tea but the course as a whole was interesting, albeit VERY stressful.
Man, I'll never forget this class. I'm not sure about his other classes, but he teaches 270 masterfully. Super engaging and strong in his opinions, but always up for a discussion. The lectures always made me smile. Assignments were simple, fun, and the required reading was entertaining. Wish I could take again, highly recommend :).
Gill really loves what he does and it shows in how he teaches his classes. As others have mentioned, he does have a massive chip on his shoulder and has very strong opinions. But if you can stomach his tangential lecture style, he seems to be a well-meaning professor that will meet you half-way. Give it your best and honest effort & you'll do fine.
Ignore the complaints about Prof. Gill; his grading scale is very lenient, expectations are clear, and he obviously enjoys teaching and tries to make "boring" topics fun. He's opinionated, but not intolerant as others claim. The class encourages you to think critically about religion--if you can't suspend your own biases, don't bother taking it.
Gill knows what he is talking about and has clear instructions but his personality is probably the most difficult part of the class. You can get a good grade if you put in the work and his grading is pretty fair but be warned that he has a big ego and is very condescending.
409: Gill brings a lot of enthusiasm to the material that makes his seminar entertaining. His course is well organized and you learn a lot. Be prepared to participate in class every day because that is a big part of the grade. Only a 4/5 because he can be very condescending.
Success in 307 after the midterm is entirely based on how many of his colleagues' books you can afford to buy. It is seriously an absurd amount of required books -- easily over $100 if you pay full price. Made me seriously resent the class. Otherwise, Gill is an amazing professor who conveys his love for his work in his lectures + class structure.
Very ramble-y lectures with lots of anecdotes because he tries to be funny, but covers very few actual concepts and everything is oversimplified. He is clearly a libertarian, and the bias shows through heavily in course material and readings. Ironically, he is also very paternalistic and dogmatic when it comes to course expectations.
Gill rambles a lot during his lectures about how he wants students to learn the concepts and not regurgitate useless information but then goes on to ask students to name specific keywords that he makes up on the exams. He doesn't give out lecture slides or a study guide and is somewhat standoffish when you ask for clarification on anything.
Very condescending. The most amount of reading Ive ever had to do in a class, let alone he had us read many of his own or his colleague's works. The course work is super out of place with no structure to what he's teaching, just concept after concept. If you do all the readings and study terms, its alright.
Amazing lecturer but terrible with one-on-one. Lectures are engaging & he is very organized. On average, you will read 100 pgs weekly. 2nd half of the quarter, the readings get more difficult. Discussion attendance is mandatory (but they are for your benefit). Discussions talk a lot about readings. Not a full 5 because he is condescending.
I mean, you know what you're getting into. If you don't like his politics or his personality, take someone else. His lectures are superb, the content is fascinating, and his expectations are very clear. (Do the readings and be punctual.) He puts on quite a show in class, but I found him fairly personable one-on-one: the ego is mostly just an act.
My primary research focus is religion and politics. Despite waiting eagerly for this class, the professor's entertaining lectures are overshadowed by his tendency to humiliate students. He's a former nerd turned bully, likely compensating for insecurities, evident in his condescending demeanor and inflated ego.
Gill is an extremely talented lecturer - he's organized, clear, and funny. This is my 2nd class with him, and both times he made seemingly "boring" topics interesting. He assigns a lot of readings, but all of them are good, relevant reads. He is very strict, but if you can follow directions you'll do well. He's a little offensive, I just ignored it
Good lecturer & tests are clear. Lots of readings, but pretty interesting. Don't fall behind or you'll be screwed for finals week. This is my 2nd class with Gill, he is entertaining but the ego gets annoying. Graded by a midterm, final, essay, & section participation. Not a fan of the guy, but easy grader. questions are often lists from readings
Funny professor with quite interesting lectures. Unfortunately the amount of books he requires in this class is just not reasonable at all. Never had a course in my 3 years at UW require this much, easily $100+. And most of the books are written by colleagues of his, so theres no doubt in my mind that they were chosen on purpose. Not for everyone.
Condescending.
My opinion of Gill was rather soured when I switched into the class late and he refused to be of any help. He's definitely a great lecturer, but he seems to care little about how student's actually do in the class and has a lot of boomer-esque attitudes. He's either very much your type of person, or not at all.
Professor Gill is an engaging lecturer, though his high textbook requirements can be a burden. Using resources like unstuckstudy alongside the readings helps manage the workload. Overall, an interesting class if you can keep up.
Condescending boomer who somehow manages to make simple concepts difficult to understand and doesn't seem to care much about the success of his students. Essentially told everyone that our votes “don't matter” without providing much nuance at all during election season. You would be best served taking other Poli Sci courses.
Yeah whatever the reviews arent wrong, hes pretty old-white-guy-who-thinks-hes-better-than-everyone-else but lectures were pretty good/important and readings (not hard to read) were a fair amount but usually worth it since he pulls smallish details from them sometimes for the test. Class isnt hard if you try, take good notes in lecture and readings
Insane amounts of reading. Very very expensive. Do not take this class unless you want to read 150+ pages per week and spend well upwards of $100. So much effort. Interesting concepts and lectures though. Great TA's
A libertarian, and makes it clear via course material. He is pompous and rude, as others have stated. I was on good terms with him and received an A in the class, but that does not blind me to the fact that he openly embarrassed students like during the final, where he scolded someone for cheating on the essay loud enough so that we all heard.
So hardddd! Need a lot of effort and a lot of exams to review, a lot of books to read.
He is by far the best lecturer I've had for a PoliSci class. He is able to keep the lectures interesting and entertaining throughout the whole course. Reading requirements are ridiculous though 100+ pages a week. Your grade is entirely dependent on how willing you are to buy the books (100$+) and how good you are at info dumping on exams.
Rude and unhelpful. Made us read HIS poorly written book for class. Tests are not set up for student success.
Excessive use of textbooks (well over $100, his own textbook is used..) and LOTS of readings. Lectures are not recorded but 50% of the exam is based off of lectures, so do NOT recommend for any DRS students. I did well but it took EVERYTHING to get a 3.8, do not recommend for most people as it is very intense. Do not recommend.
Took this class following his pols270 class and this was the most boring class ever. Has a thing for proper grammar but I read his book plus the books he recommends, its too wordy. you made your point 100 pgs ago. I read academic books in my own time. Restating points will occur. but alas political scientist are just HORRIBLE writers.
Don't listen to any of the students' complaints about him, he's a great Professor. People complain he gives heavy readings and is a tough grader, why the heck are you going to university then, to play with your feet? You'll never become the best version of yourself if you don't take challenges. Uni is a great place to do that, so are his classes.
All the reviews of this guy are mostly correct. He's got a rough exterior but really just is a nice guy underneath it all. Don't expect grace for simple mistakes. The quantity of reading was difficult to keep up with and forced me to skim instead of fully read and understand content.
I took 307 with Gill and it's easily my favorite poli sci class at UW. Gill is a really great and engaging lecturer. Definitely be prepared to read 100 pgs a week but his lectures summarize the important points really well. Also who on earth is spending money on the books required for this class??? Figure out how to get the books on the internet.
Worst professor I've had. Had him for 270 and it was fine because despite his extreme ego the class itself was interesting. In every personal interaction he has been incredibly rude and demeaning. I took him again for 307 and requested my blue book from my final, which he responded to by calling me functionally illiterate.
Professor Gill is an amazing professor. His lectures are very interesting and provide a lot of information. There is a lot of reading, averaging about 100 pages a week, but the textbooks are all interesting. The content was so interesting, lectures and quiz sections are important for doing well. Tip: study the lists.
Gill's class was entertaining but I recommend talking to your TAs and not him outside of class. He prefers male students and is self-important which is expected. The readings are fabulous but do NOT skip lecture, sections are fun, it is a full commitment money and time wise but it is worth it. This class will push you, know how to manage yourself.
Gill is an intense guy that is very set in his ways. The class content was interesting, and he lectures well. I was lucky to be a student he liked, but I can't ignore his self-important attitude and rudeness to others. I am glad I took this class, but I would not take a class from him again. Also, as a DRS student he was not very accommodating.
Essentially accused me of using AI on my final paper (which I didn't). I didn't learn the grade of my final paper until a day after the finals. When I emailed him to try to appeal my grade, he never responded. I ended up having to get the department involved to get a reply, and his reply was condescending and curt. Don't take 270 with him.
Gill is an amazing lecturer. Easily some of the best lectures at UW. The issue is I am a DRS student. Gill does not seem to like DRS students. He grades DRS exams instead of letting his TAs do it, and he is a harsher grader than his TAs. I have lost points on exams for reasons unbeknownst to me, while friends answered the same and got credit.
You literally don't know what to expect on the midterm. Annoying trick questions, you have to take pencil and paper notes, and you can't access slides or a panopto outside of class. Things NEVER discussed in class are on the exams, which would be fine except there's no study guide at all (he claims the syllabus is a study guide).
Class is mandotory as well as books, no free online ones lots and LOTS of reading. He is SO rude to talk to, makes you feel dumb when asking questions, go to TAs instead for any questions. If he grades anything of yours, GOOD LUCK, such a HARSH grader. Final exam has nothing to do with whats discussed in class.
This class is much harder than other 300–400 level political science courses, but not because of the material. The professor is unapproachable, unwilling to answer questions, and assigns a heavy amount of reading with little guidance. I'm not really recommend this class to you guys unless you want to ruin your emotional and your GPA then take it.
