Don't take this teacher!!...this is the hardest class u will ever take in ur life!
Only reccommended if you do the homework. Most questions are from the homework however still very difficult. Works on a grading curve.
Dr. Mellone is the best professor I've very met. extremely approachable, nice, funny, easy going, and he explains so clear. No one can do better.
Professor Mellon is the BOMB. He is cool, helpful, and nice. He is probably the best teacher at all valencia to take for chemistry. BEWARE...u must be prepared to work your A** off. He likes to surf..(hint for sucking up)
Great teacher. Funny, relaxed, and fair in grading. Quizzes are relatively easy, tests are very close to the homework, and gives fair amount of extra credit. I took Dr. Mellone for chem I and II, best chem teacher out here. Keep it up! -JSB-
Mellone is the funniest person ever. Chemistry is hard... there's no way around it but he helps alot. He likes surfing and he has the cutest little boy ever... I took him last semester for Chem 1 and 2... could take him for Organic cause he wasn't teachin
Chem may be the hardest class anyone has to take at Valencia. Dr. Mellone not only makes it very interesting, but is an excellent teacher. I would suggest him over any Chem teacher here!! I took three other Chem teachers here so I think I would know!
This is the best professor for chemistry at valencia. take my word because i have tried all of them and dropped them because of low test grades even with studying. but in mellone's class, this guy makes chemistry like eating your favorite food.
very hard course but he made it as easy as possible
Dr.Mellone is extremely cool. He's funny, nice, and very helpful, very organized. He knows what he's doing, and he's trying his best to help you to learn. He's one of those teachers who really care if the students understand or not.
One of the best teachers I have had at VCC. I love his teaching approach. He can be very funny. You better study though.
This guy is really nice, but he doesn't teach Chemistry! He somewhat prepares you for the tests, but you will learn almost NO CHEMISTRY in this class! He's really unorganized too. If you want an easy C, this is class for you. If Chemistry is important to your major, do *NOT* take Dr. Mellone. =o(
Overall, a good teacher...not too bad!
HEY TONY! I have dealt with more profs. than the avg student in his classes. He is ALWAYS there to help his students when his door is open. I busted butt and took his class and 2045 at the same time and aced both. If it had been at UCF, it wouldn't have been possible -thanx for being there to teach!
Dr Mellone is the most helpful and awesome teacher u will ever get. Beleieve me,there is no one at valencia that teaches better chemistry than mellone, not even that british dumbass Frazer. Just make sure you practise his past quizzes and tests which u can access in his website.
I'm only half way through the class and I can't stand it. He teaches no Chemistry and it's impossible to study for tests. He's very scattered brained and unorganized and very unwilling to help with any questions. And he seems to think that he's teaching a politics class which he isn't
He is very bad! If you ask a question he treats you like your stupid. Never gets any of his Calculations from the book so it doesn't help. Even admits he doesn't teach whats on the final. And I think he thinks he's teaching a politics class
I think he is the best chemistry teacher at west campus....all u have to do is read the book and practice his past quizzes and tests as much as possible....U can find the past tests and quizzes online and the answer keys are in his office..also try to be his best friend...beleive me..it will help
OK, HE IS ALWAYS IN HIS OFFICE TO HELP STUDENTS.TEST ARE HARD.VERY BAD AND SOMETIMES THERE ARE QUESTIONS THAT JUST CONFUSED THE STUDENT.HIS LABS ARE A WASTE OF TIME.ALSO,HIS FINALIS NOT MADE FROM HIS CLASS.HE TAKES A FINAL FROM THE NATIONAL CHEMESTRYASS.SO,WE DO NOT GO OVER ON MANY SUBJECTS.DON`TAKE
I had Dr. Mellone for Chem. 1 and 2 and I thought he was a pretty good teacher....u do have to study though and it is VERY possible to get either an A or B...just study his past tests and quizzes and u should be fine. I wish he taught Org. Chem as well!!!
He does talk to you stupid if you dont know how to do a calculation and its is very frustrating. His tests are very hard and so are his quizzes, but atleast he curves them. But he is better than some of the other professors.
his class is suffering we dont know wat to study or how to study all his quizzes and tests are unfair even a 4.0 student with honor classes failed his tests and is going to report him to the dean
very disorganized with his notes, tests and quizzes are hard, but study old tests and quizzes. He is very friendly and is able to help you in any way.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER!!If you want to cause yourself uneeded stress then go ahead. In my class the test averages were in the 50's(for all 3 tests). He is UNORGANIZED, "teaches" as a REVIEW, can not answer questions, and he says comments without thinking about them first (blunt in a bad way). Save yourself the trouble/stress/time... do not take!
He doesnt know how to teach the material to people who dont have a strong chemistry background. His lectures were a waste of time. Very easy to get at least a B in the class, just study his past test and read the chapters they help.Dont study for his final because youll just be wasting your time because its a standarized state chemistry final.
Horrible Professor ! he SAYS his office is always open for help, but the dude CONFUSES YOU MORE...ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET AN A ON THE FINAL.My 13 Year old sister can give better notes than him. UNORGANIZED AND UNCLEAR. Tests are hella hard, be prepared to study more than 5 hours a week if chem is not ur subject. Take FRAZIER or someone on EAST CAMPUS
he's really goofy which is funny till you realize that you're failing his class.Pre-Lab quiz every Lab. Quiz on chapters every week. The final is standardized test. we all fail so he doubles the grade! TESTS ARE NO LONGER FROM PRIOR TESTS. your welcome!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!If you are majoring in any science fields and you need to take Chemistry classes stear clear of this professor. He does not provide you with a good foundation in Chemistry and leaves you wondering if you have learned anything. You will feel like having a mental break down from having to teach yourself. Respect issues too!
He's a good guy. At times has trouble realizing he needs to explain things further. It's possible to get an A in the class and on the final, despite other comments, as he has a different grading scale to help with the difficulty level. You will have to study. He offers ALL old tests and quizzes online, often reusing old questions and hw questions.
Ok, these clowns below have no idea what their talking about.N e thing related 2 science is tough. His lecture's are bit unorganized. Labs are e-z compared to other professors. Make sure you attend class often b/c he gives you 100 pts for being present (100 pts is like gettin a 10% boost in your overall grade!)
Very passionate about chemistry - but sometimes it takes control as his lectures can be all over the place (literally & figuratively). Be prepared to learn on your own. Will answer questions but often leaves you more confused. Old tests & quizzes are online so you always have a good idea of what to expect. Extremely helpful in lab.
great professor, very helpful in class, you know what to expect on the tests and quizzes, do the homework and take advantage of office hours!
Average professor. Boring lectures. Take advantage of office hours. I survived the class by doing old quizzes and test then going to him for the answer keys. Fun guy and trys to be helpful but end up confusing his students even more.
Dr. Mellone tries really hard to help you out. His lectures are entertaining and better than a lot teachers. He can be a bit confising and can get ahead of himself sometimes but he tries really hard to help you understand. My advice is go through the book and use his office hours. Also, rely more on the homework than his old tests and quizzes.
DO NOT take this professor. His class lectures seems pointless. You have to read the book to survive. He gives no study guide or idea of what will be on the tests or quizzes. All he has is a bunch of old tests and quizzes from his previous classes on his web site. He has said he is not there to teach you to material, he is just a "learning leader".
he does not teach the class. He talks to the blackboard and looks at his work. he does not know how to teach and not helpful at all. he is an ass
This guy sucks. Don't take him. The test and quizs are hard as F&*k. He does not know how to teach!!!! Stay away
It is impossible to follow him because he jumps around all the time. Also he can never do an example problem on the board and get it right. To top it off you can't ask him to do a hw question because if he figures it out (which is rare, he will end up confusing u and himself at least 10 times. He is just very hard to follow mainly because he is ver
Dr. Mellone can be confusing at times because he's trying to help you understand the material. You just have to study a lot (I mean this is college people) Overall he's not that bad. Do the HW and use his old tests and quizzes. He repeats a lot of questions from them. He's more than happy to help you. He's not a terrible person. Labs are a breeze.
I am currently taking this teacher. He is the worst teacher I ever take in my life. The Dean has so many bad comments and reports about him, I don't know how can he still teach. If you don't want to waste your time and money, don't take him. Otherwise you will be so disappointed. you will start questioning yourself since the first week of the class
Stop your damn complaining guys. This is chemistry and this is college. Grow up. In this class YOU-YES, YOU are expected to learn this on your own! The teacher simply guides you. Okay! Dr. Mellone is a VERY GOOD professor! Study and stay disciplined. I got an A with him and I do not have a propensity for chem! He is very enthusiastic and nice
For the person below me: perhaps he was easy for you, but I took him for chem II and my buddies and I all basically failed. How is it we can do differentials with ease and yet cant comprehend what the hell Mellone is talking about? He does not know how to properly teach..and I thought a professor/teacher is supposed to TEACH..that is THEIR JOB.
This is by far the absolutely worst professor I've had in my life time. He does give old quizzes and tests online, however most of that info is useless. It will only give you a basic idea. If all you do is study that you will fail. I read the book, did the homework problems, had the Chem Tutor software still didn't do well. You will work hard for C
Dr. Mellone is one of the greatest professors I have had for chemistry. He has no problem explaining a concept multiple times if he is asked. If you are a hard working student and do the homework even though its optional, read the text and do practice quizzes then there is no reason why you wont pass the class. He even gives shortcuts in lab.
He is the COOLEST dude/teacher I have ever taken! You earned your grade, but he made it pretty clear that you would need to. He explained stuff, whenever asked and was super-fun in lab. He spoiled me as my new chem prof makes us do ALL of the trials in an experiment - yuck! He plays awesome music during lab too! Very laid back guy! Take him!!!
A great teacher and cool person! He provides study guides from previous tests and quizzes that he has given. You always know what you are going to be tested on. The subject is not easy, but if you put in the work you will do well. I highly recommend this teacher.
Great, great teacher. If you do not read the book, you will not pass the class. He moves very quickly through the material, and if you do not read and do the homework you will not understand what he is talking about. Gives lots of quizzes and lab quizzes to pad your grade. Doesn't make you do pre-labs & plays music in lab :)
This guy is a total idiot. Every time he attempted to do exercise problem from the end of the chapter he never got it right. So if you werent confused prior to him working the problem, you were certainly totally confused by the end of his attempt. I am an A student and loves chem, but for the first time I found myself not understanding the subject.
He is a very nice and fun person, but as a teacher not so good. His explanations were horrible and sloppy, if you were confused before then you are even more confused after he tries to explain. He does provide you with tests and quizzes from previous classes, but the final is a national standardized chem test. Nice guy, but horrible at explaining!
ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR!! The guy knows he?s stuff without a doubt, but teaching it is another story. He is all over the place, racing through the material as fast as he can. I was more confused after class then before I went in. Really a nice guy overall, but a horrible teacher (I had to visit a chem-tutor daily). I would not recommend him!!
He is a decent professor who gives really great notes and relates information well. If you want to succeed in this course, ALWAYS attend lectures and write down everything he has on the board (you WILL be tested on it). The key to getting an A in this course is to look back at the old quizzes and exams on his course web-page. Tough grader.
Really nice guy and knows his stuff but he does NOT deliver it well. He is very confusing and all over the place. I don't recommend taking his class. Quizzes in lab and class every week and 5 exams total which are not that easy.
Don't listen to the the other reviews. You are quizzed on what is gone over in class, AND he allows access to all previous quizzes/tests from semesters past. Easy quizzes every week (if you look at last semesters) and 3 tests. Drops 2 quizzes, and 1 lab. NO PRE OR POST LABS!! Chem 2 is a hard class, but i got an A+ by reviewing past quizzes.
Horrible!!! He explains nothing clearly and gets extremely frustrated when students dont understand immediately.Picky on lab reports.Quiz every class. Just straight up not a good teacher. If you want to learn i beg you DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
This is the best professor I have ever had. His interest for chemistry and the passion expressed when giving lectures has really helped develop my chemistry foundation. If you really want to learn chemistry, by all means take his course. He gives weekly quizzes which helps one stay on top of studying and tries very hard to teach the material well.
Proff. Mellone does have a strong passion for chemistry, anyone who has had him can clearly see that. That passion, however, makes him seem all over the place and he's also very, well, goofy. His quizzes get harder as the semester goes on and you always have to study for them. His grading scale is very lenient however. Like said before, no pre-labs
The Real Review: Quiz EVERY class. Homework not mand. Gets mad if you dont understand the material, he hates repeating. Always talks about A students v.s F students. Quizzes are not easy. I wish I took someone else. Stay away if you can. Do not take him. Choose a better professor that you can go to if you cant understand. STAY AWAY! BE AWARE!
Mastering Chemistry quizzes and homework.Three tests and final. One test is dropped. No prelabs or formal lab reports, instead a small quiz worth 5 pts before lab. No practicals. Dr. Mellone makes the labs fun and he is very thorough in explaining every lab. Lectures are fast and confusing. I did not care for those, I used online tutorials.
Spends more time correcting his own answers or trying to remember how to do a problem than explaining it to us, making 100% of the class time worthless. Absolutely impossible to take useful notes. You can take him, but just be ready to teach yourself COMPLETELY. Also he can be rude sometimes!
This class was the most frustrating class I have ever taken. Professor's lectures are completely worthless. He rattles off in different directions and will get frustrated when asked questions. Homework and quizzes all online and material is totally different then test material. I worked really hard to get a C and had to teach myself everything.
I took chem 2 with him back in 2011 and looking back on the class he has helped solidify my understanding of chemistry. The class is hard but if you follow his lectures and take good notes he will drill the concepts into your brain. I am now a chemical engineering student at Ohio state university and his knowledge has helped me thru my studies.
Don't take this class! Be prepared to teach yourself everything or be visiting the tutoring center every week. He'll start a problem then realized he's wrong half way through. You can't take useful notes, he's all over the place. He doesn't teach you how to do the problems.
He cares about his students. The material is hard. It's college chemistry, it's supposed to be hard. But if you read the book on the side, before the lectures, and visit him in his office, he's more than willing to help. He uses mastering chemistry, which isn't very fun. But if you do well on it, and you should (bc google), it helps.
Amazing Professor. He really cares about his students and is always ready to help. Passing the class is not hard. But, getting an A requires reading thr book and a lot of practice. He also gives all his previous test and a 5 points bonus that is already in the previous tests. Study enough you'll get an A.
Mellone can be rude sometimes and he is sometimes all over the place, which has a lot to do with his passion for chemistry. Mellone is really a fair guy and he will try to do everything in his power to make sure you pass. He also gives very good feedback on test and on labs. The class is actually not hard at all.
Prof. Mellone wasn't my first choice. He can be very blunt at times and often gets lost in his notes. He doesn't do the best explaining problems as a whole class, but if you ask him for help during class activities then he's more than willing. Tests are hard, labs are easy points. His grading scale is very helpful. Get to know him and you'll be gd
I took Professor Mellone's class over the summer term and loved it. He is a unique guy but he really wants you to do as well as you can. It is not an easy class, but if you read and try to fully understand the concepts you will be fine. Lots of math in the class and in lab but practicing the activities he gives helps a ton. Overall, a great teacher
Professor Mellone is super nice and loves to interact with everybody. During lecture though, his notes are all over the place and he loses his train of thought a lot. He definitely makes time for you if you need help. He has tests from previous classes posted to study from and practice. Labs are alot of work, but not very difficult.
I studied very hard for the tests in this class and went to tutoring. Even the tutor at the campus was telling us that most of the students that come for tutoring are Mellone's students because they do not understand when he teaches. I struggled and just gave up at the end. :(
He is all over the place when it comes to teaching. I had to spend time at a tutor just to get the concepts because I was very lost. He prepares you to take a standardized test if you're becoming a chemist. Great guy just not a great professor
It's a college course so it doesn't matter if he teaches or not, so if you take him get ready to read the chemistry book from front to back. He does give partial credit for answers just read the book and do his study guides and look at his previous tests. Don't expect an easy A, it is doable though. TBH he's better than other chem prof at west camp
Professor Mellone is a pretty decent professor. His grading scale is a little more lenient, you need an 88 or above to get an A. However the class is not easy. He lectures most of the time and writes/talks really fast it can be hard to catch up. His tests are based off of past tests that he has made. I really had to read the book to fully understan
Be prepared for an instructor that doesn't teach. There is no segue of information during lecture, unclear directions, and expectations are not feasibly met. The only way I have learned, and attempted to pass this course, is teaming up with fellow students as a band of brothers. Even then, barely staying a float. Best of luck if you take him.
It is hard to rate Professor Mellone, is is very funny and tries his best to help you pass and make class interesting, however, His lectures like everyone else says is all over the place. You will be lost whenever he is talking. Imagine bill nye the science guy, but during at woodstock teaching chemistry.
if you decided to take him, be ready for the next couple things: your going to teach yourself, you are going to listen to his creepy stories that happen at his home everyday, the tests are going to be based on 5% of what he teaches in class and 95% you need to learn on your own and you won't be able to see your current grade because he rarelyupdat
prof. Mellone is a smart man, no doubt about it; but he does not lecture well and his notes are all over the place. His tests are ridiculous and difficult to study for. You will not know your grade unless you see him during office hours because he doesn't take the time to keep his students updated. beyond frustrating. PLEASE... take someone else!!!
If you need to actually learn chemistry do not I repeat do not take Prof Mellone. If you ask a question be ready for him to get mad at you for asking a question. I would go to his office hours for help with labs after he told me to come and then he would get mad that I had come because I had questions. You also wont know your grades the whole time
This professor worked hard to make sure that the class was entertained and prepared for the exams. Great guy.
Took chem 1 two semesters ago, still felt the need to warn y'all. Not trying to be rude, just honest to help out, he's really a terrible lecturer, all over the place. Doesn't teach CONCEPTS, just examples so you really don't get what you're doing. Get ready for inappropriate and rude comments. Don't ask ANY questions or he'll yell at you.
He takes tons of feedback because he knows he sucks, but he wants to get better. I hated the class. You have to treat him like a fragile grandpa. His lectures are long and you're going to need a lot of tutoring. His grading scale is different. I had a 77 but it ended up being a B. Come PREPARED, he expects you to know things before lab & lecture.
I took Summer Term A for 6 weeks in his class online because of covid-19 and I am very disappointed. I was self-taught all the way and even though he had office hours I didn't want to rely on that because every time I asked him questions he responds either mean or rude. Don't take him if you actually want to learn.
I've taken chem in the past and passed with a B. This was by far the hardest course I've ever taken. There's tons of work and not much explanation to it.
Mellone is a good professor. He should have a much higher rating. All of his work is done on Aleks (comparable to MathLab). I basically get taught through the program. There are 10-20 topics due each week and a total of 3 tests and 1 final. Labs every week but they are straightforward and you can text Mellone any time of day. No proctoring at all.
expects you to be a chemistry genius and very disrespectful.
Professor Mellone is always available outside of class anytime you need help, and he doesn't mind staying 1 or 2 hours helping his student. 90% of your assignment won't have a late penalty. Chemistry is not an easy class. Professor Mellone won't make it easier either, but if you are putting the time and use his office hours, you'll pass the class.
Overall a very difficult class, to do well you a solid understanding of the material is required. tests are short but have no multiple choice questions. Professor Mellone is always willing to spend time helping outside of class during office hours to clarify information if a student is behind. Expect to put a lot of time and effort into this course
Professor Mellone is a good person however not the best professor. Be prepared to have a professor that doesn't teach and expects you to know things. The lectures are all over the place and his instructions are never clear. Tests are barely on what he teaches instead off stuff you must learn on your own.
This class wasn't as bad as I thought it would be when I first decided to take this course. There are quizzes every week including prefab quizzes, so make sure to read before class. At least the past tests can be helpful for exams. Sad to see that this professor is retiring. Thanks for everything Dr. Mellone! :)
