You have a two page paper due every week on one chapter, he grades like he is an english teacher and he makes you feel stupid. This should be an easy A class but it's not. He thinks he's all that and a bag of chips. He doesn't teach us about Criminal justice, he rants about discrimination. He has a one mic rule and is rude about it.
HE WAS RUDE! WE ASKED QUESTIONS AND HE GOT MAD BECAUSE WE NEEDED CLARIFICATION ON HOMEWORK. HE MADE YOU FEEL STUPID
Be ready to type two page papers. He makes you wrote these wierd bulletpoints. He also makes you write poems as a type of paper. He talks more about himself and his organization then your actual topic and has this view point that basically makes it seem like cops are bad. Oh and if its below 90 be ready to rewrite it. Not taking any of his classes.
I took two of his classes when I saw how nice he was at first. Its a front dont fall for it. He also has you sign up for his club beware. He has two events for each class. Also look at my cj1330 comment.
2 pg paper, poem, or bullet pt essay due WEEKLY. Reading REQUIRED. You won't learn anything about CJ. VERY anti law enforcement. I'll never take his classes again. He grades WORSE than any teacher ever. Didn't learn about CJ AT ALL. He talks A LOT about himself. VERY unorganized. 15/10 wouldn't take this class if I was paid tuition for it.
Anthony is one of the best professors I'v ever had. Some people aren't fond of his teaching methods, but I learned so much more from him than any other professor. All classes are DISCUSSION. Papers due every week on reading. TAKE HIS CLASS!!! you wont regret it
He is a good teacher if you are not majoring in Criminal Justice. You do have weekly homework due every week. But he is so lenient on the due date. The first day we went outside and for the whole class, we played a game to remember everyone's names. He is not consistent with grading at all. He is very liberal. we watched good movies.
Thought it would be an interesting class for a required diversity req, he made it seem like a fake class and field. Bad grasp of how to use canvas or email. Not good at communicating what he expects and then chalks it up to personal differences. Text is 200$, necessary for homework, and the students teach it each week, not sure if he read it.
This was Anthony's first semester at SLCC, so I took a chance because it fit my schedule. It was terrible, If you're white, or a male as well, he will guilt you for it. Doesn't teach anything about CJ, just disses on cops, white people, and conservatives/right wing. LOTS of homework, weekly papers that he poorly explains leaving you clueless.
Outstanding professor with great knowledge on the subject. Challenged to students to do a lot of work, while many students don't like writing and reading, he makes you a better writer and critical thinker.
Really enjoyed this class, it's very easy to get behind if you miss any class so definitely stay on top of assignments and chapter readings. Wonderful professor who has a lot of experience and knowledge to share with others.
Best professor at SLCC and UofU he made you work hard and if you did not ... you did not pass. He is amazing. Not a fluff class. Powerful, thoughtful, and he took his time and had office hours. You could even call him for help. People that complained did not want to work and did not want to be challenged. They are not ready for college.
I attended first day, was immediately confronted with red flags. White guilt was pushed. Anti police rhetoric. Anti male rhetoric. First day felt more of preschool, with games and very unorthodox methods of teaching. I was targeted by underlying bias, and he implemented a game to see my "privilege points". I knew that wasn't my class. Dropped fast.
Not a very smart professor, uses buzzfeed news as a trusted source. Whenever you try to question anything he says he insults you like a gradeschool child and shoves his PHD in your face. Very rude to the point most in the class were too uncomfortable to ask questions afraid of being put down. Doesnt teach anything about CJ, just rants.
I'll be honest, he made a lot of students mad when I took his class. His teaching methods are unorthodox to put it lightly and if you aren't staying on top of the homework you will have a VERY hard time catching up. He assigned an essay every week and he was very picky about the formatting (APA). Overall, class is doable but glad its done.
Fun and enjoyable course. There was a paper every week, which is not hard, you just have to keep up with the work. He will challenge you. He is very intelligent and knows the material, but allows the students to talk and facilitate the reading as well. He is the best professor I have taken.
This is my second course with him. It was a victimology class. Anthony is an incredible difficult man to work with and drives me insane. If you don't mind showing up, teaching all the lessons yourself, and doing a paper every week, its a hilariously easy A. The final includes a presentation at a conference and serving the homeless on a Saturday.
Dr. Nocella is great! He wakes you up about how to help and care for your community. He requires you to engage with the community, go to court visits, and facilitate class. It is amazing. The BEST teacher.
The best professor. You must take Nocella. He got me to change my degree plan to criminal justice. Makes you learn and engage and challenge social norms. He cares and wants us to care too.
Hey believes in you and wants you to do your best. He will open your mind and shows how criminal justice is about human rights, lgbt rights, civil rights, and equity. He promotes justice and community.
Take his class! He will explain new ideas, share ideas, empower you to facilitate and lead the class, and provides you the ability to build skills such as writing and presenting. Very useful class. Not just an easy A or boring class. If you want to learn take his course.
Brilliant professor. He taught me what critical theory really is and the history, so I can be a better police officer. He truly cares about you and ending injustice and violence. He will teach you APA too, which you MUST know for a four year degree and grad school.
Thank you Salt Lake Community College, for having an amazing Department of Criminal Justice and outstanding professors such as Dr. Nocella. This program is one of a kind. Thank you. The program and Dr. Nocella have given me the skills and knowledge I need to be successful in juvenile justice and corrections.
I did not care about the homeless issue or community engagement, but after his class he woke me up and because I did so much in the class I have so many more skills. It is valuable class and professor.
Outstanding professor! I am now working on a book with him and fellow students. Dr. Nocella provides opportunities that are rare even for graduate students to participate in, such as publishing in an academic journal, internships, and editing a book.
His politics would be barely tolerable if you learned anything about criminal justice, at all. Mostly you learn about what's new on Tumblr if you know what I mean. If I found out years later that he was a misanthrope trying to start race wars, I would believe it
Never trust a PhD who insists you call them prof. I might forgive one if they are very young, but Anthony is way too proud of all the "work" he does like knowing how to put up a website with his name on it and spew out a few dozen books that are paywalled so no one will read them and know they are extremist dogma. Say the right words and stay safe
Upon first glance the assignment weight wasn't too bad, but as the class started I realized how hard of a grader he is. He doesn't reply back to emails very well and when he does he doesn't give you a solid answer or help too much with your questions and concerns. I learned more from my book than I did him.
Excellent professor and extremely caring of making you an outstanding student and open-minded critical thinker. Fun and easy to talk to. I recommend you take him.
Outstanding professor with wonderful ideas, feedback, and assisted me on writing, reading, and presenting better. He cared so much about me and the other students. He pushes you to be a better student and challenges you to be just, equitable, and inclusive.
After talking with other students from my class and others taking this course from different professors, I think it would have been preferred to take this course from another professor. I felt like I learned more from the book about CJ than in class that became more of chance for him to express his own opinions. Beware this class can get expensive.
If you want to learn anything criminal justice related, skip his class at all cost! The whole semester he just kept talking about his "feeding the houseless project". The only criminal justice thing I learned was from his expensive textbook. Only reason he's not 1/5 is because at the end of the semester he's clearly overwhelmed and grades easier.
Wonderful course where I learned a great deal in about criminal justice, corrections, and criminology. He helped me become a better student, writer, and critical thinker. He makes you work and conduct service for others, which is amazing.
I have taken a lot of classes at SLCC and have never had much to complain about. However, this course was a joke. It was poorly organized, poor communication, poor grading scale and was just all around impossible to figure out. If you have other classes to keep up with it will be impossible to remember to do the assignments for this class.
Anthony is different from other SLCC Criminal Justice Profs in that he gives the academic side and hasn't worked in the field. He has some different perspectives which was OK but I feel like all his classes would be the same. Students present each week from assigned reading, there is a required end of year presentation on a Saturday, and service.
Great caring professor with an amazing perspective on the criminal justice system. He pushed me to do more as a student and to become a critical thinker. He was caring, open-minded, and his experiences in jails, prisons, and juvenile detention facilities were a great part of his knowledge.
Discussions in class are great, and he does not lecture. Very caring about his students, and the community. Be prepared to write, he expects APA style, and wants it perfect. 1 2-page paper per week. As long as you do the work, you will pass with an A. The reading is on your own time, but 1 student a week presents on the chapter for that week.
Honestly this class kind of pushed me away from me wanting to pursue the criminal justice major. He grades unfairly and will fail you for nothing more than your punctuation.
I took this class because I want to be a police officer. My degree is SLCC criminal justice. Mistake taking this professor. No experience with investigations and only talks about his social justice issues, okay stuff but not for this class. I did not learn how to investigate.
I have taken multiple classes from Anthony, all they are all done in the same manor. He doesn't go in depth on the class materials, so you learn the specifics from the book. Be prepared to write in APA perfectly (allows redos). Doesn't test. Big on service learning, be prepared to serve the community. Nice guy, really cares about social justice.
This class was the most unorganized class I have ever taken as an online Salt Lake Community College student, The course was criminology and halfway through the semester I forgot that we were studying criminology thinking I was in an English course. He grades on rigid guidelines for structure of paper as opposed to knowledge of the material.
Outstanding professor with great ideas, thoughtful, and kind. He is one of the best professors at Salt Lake Community College. He has taught many courses and published many books. He truly is a brilliant professor, which is why I have taken many of his courses before going off to USC.
He is a great person and mentor. I learned a lot from him. He taught me about justice, punishment, and healing. He helped me be a more ethical person to others. He has a lot of love for his students and the world. He is a great professor.
"Five sentences per paragraph. No more, no less". I heard this phrase almost every class; it is a good summary of what to expect. Dr. Nocella has very strict rules for formatting that he enforces rigidly. Any writer worth their salt will chafe under these rules. He also said in class that "If the only thing you learn is APA, that's good enough"
I took this course as an online class, and boy, I regret it so much, but it was my last semester, so I can't drop; there were no other classes available. However, if you are a good writer and love writing, take his class because this course is like majoring in English.
Dr. Nocella, is an excellent professor, who builds your skills in being a writer, thinker, and student who is prepared for a four year school. He is much better then most professors, who could careless if you were in the class and gives quizzes.
Great, kind, caring, and wonderful person and professor. He was my best professor and he supported me to move toward getting a 4 year degree in sociology at the University of Utah.
Dr. Nocella was a fun, engaging, powerful, and thoughtful professor who gets the students to learn to write, read, be a critical thinker, and an artist. He has weekly writings and reading assignments, which we speak about and then discuss the films we watch as well, each week. We have rich and deep conversations. He is the best faculty at SLCC.
Worst class ever. Very picky on how you turn in papers, was more worried about the format. Will not respond in canvas, wants you to text your personal phone. Never puts dates, wants you to know when everything is due. Will change homework without notifying you. When I wanted to discuss my grade he answered with IDK. Worked more on his projects.
Wonderful professor organized, thoughtful, and wanted us to learn to write, read, and be critical thinkers. He got us involved in projects and presenting. He had guest speakers and exciting discussions. His class projects and case studies were important and made me grow as a person.
Dr. Nocella is kind professor who cared about me during covid. Life is hard and stressful with work and family. He was flexible and allowed me to do extra credit to make up for missed classes. He is really a wonderful person.
Absolutely worst experience. Nocella comes off as knowing a lot but lacks being able to effectively teach. Hard to follow, treats us as if we were doctorate students with little to no support.
Anthony is a kind respectful person. He worked with all students and I truly appreciate his respect for equity and allowing students to speak. The discussions in class and papers every week were important and valuable.
This professor is amazing and kind. I love the conference we just presented at and I also valued all the papers, which made me a better writer. He is professional and someone who has office hours via Zoom. I think he is a great inclusive professor. I am heading off to nursing at the University of Utah now and am happy I took his class.
Participation and homework matters and attending class is required. Make sure to be engaged & want to learn. If you don't want to learn & you want to take an easy class, this isn't your professor. He wants you to care about learning & making the criminal justice system better. He asks a lot of questions & wants students to lead the conversations.
A great professor who does not teach off a PowerPoint or book. Yes he has his own knowledge. The negative reviews are most often people who do not like to do hard work or attend class. If you want to learn and are not scared of doing work & talking in class, take Dr. Nocella. He also allows students to network with each other and build friendships
An outstanding kind caring inclusive equitable and social justice professor who challenges students on a weekly basis through readings film watching and critical conversations.
Dr. Nocella is a kind respectful hardworking professor, with a lot of love in his heart. He allows his students to lead, engage, teach, share, and be themselves. Get ready to work, learn, write, read, present, and volunteer. He wants his students to help make the world a better place.
Current senior at UVU taken a lot of classes he is by far the worst. Sickeningly strict about the format, it's like he could care less about the contents of the paper, if it doesn't perfectly match his made-up version of APA format, there's no chance you will get full credit. Seemed as if he wanted his students to fail and not learn anything. Avoid
This professor finally teaches me to be a researcher and scholar. The other comments about him wanting us to learn APA is correct. He is wanting us to learn how to write, read, engage, and be academics. Too many professors do not care about writing and only care about quizzes and tests. He is a little hard, but for good reason.
Best professor. If you are not organized, you should get organized to take their class. You should also be aware there is a lot of reading and writing in this course, which I love, but some people might not like this. If you like quizzes and tests, this is not the professor to take, but if you like critical thinking and writing take Dr. Nocella.
A professor that finally taught me how to write and be a student. I cannot say enough on how this professor pushed me to write better, learn APA, think critically, and think outside of the Utah culture that does not value going to college.
A powerful kind professor that centered student voices and did not give up on students. He really likes SLCC and the students. He wants the best for the community. I really value this class and his teaching.
He is huge on APA7 but if you aren't good like me, he teaches you how to be better and gives you chances to rewrite/resubmit. Overall I loved being in his class he makes you step out of your comfort zone which helped me a lot. Loved his class give him a chance you won't regret it! Despite the BAD reviews, once you get to know him he is AMAZING!!!!
Where to begin, Anthony is an amazingly caring person with a deep understanding of life. Some may find him controversial but really he's just an open thinker. I didn't agree with some of his viewpoints but enjoyed the debates in classes. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone!
I did not learn anything from taking this class. I had reached out to Professor Nocella on numerous occasions to understand what is expected from the formats he requires us to use. I never received a clear answer regarding any of my concerns. Don't bother learning the actual material. This is an english class as far as anyone can see.
He is a great professor and someone you should take at SLCC. He is a fun positive person that challenges you and gets you ready for transfer.
He is super nice and funny. I took him last summer and it was a very hard class but he gets us ready for when we transfer like if we were all going to Harvard. No quizzes or tests but so many papers. He gives amazing feedback thought and wants the best for you. Love u Ant!
I love this professor. He is very helpful and really wants everyone to succeed. He is a tough grader but he lets us revise it for a better score. He has no tests or quizzes!! I think everyone should take him, a very good professor. He sets you up for success and ready to transfer. Thank you Anthony. :)
Anthony is a great professor. He wants you to succeed. I like his feedback on my essays. He is also very nice and very educated. I will miss him so much. Thank you Ant.
Professor's like this make me want to drop out of college.
This professor is a great detailed thoughtful and rigorous professor. If you like speaking in class, writing, and engaging in critical discussions, this is the class for you.
Best professor at SLCC hands down! Take his class, you will learn so much. He is so funny and so educated. I miss him and the class already.
Wonderful person and professor. He got us in the community and to present in the classroom and at conferences. He also provided a lot of extra credit and did not allow anyone to get less than an A.
Cool class, we gave socks and other essentials to the homeless and had interesting discussions. One essay a week which is not graded on the quality of the essay but rather the format of the essay (APA). You can redo the essays as much as you want to. The final is a 10-minute presentation.
Anthony Nocella has good intentions, but in terms of their skill as a professor, that is where it stops. They provide vague and convoluted feedback on assignments; deciphering exactly what he expects of students is akin to decoding the rosetta stone. Comically unorganized, Nocella holds his students to a standard he cannot uphold himself.
Dr. Nocella magnified and sharpened my critical thinking skills. He uses Socratic teaching methods to convey the coursework and a variety of ideas. He emphasizes group activity, aiming to cultivate an inclusive society.
A very kind and respectful professor grounded in discussing ethics, morals, values, and equity. The professor provided freedom and did not lecture at us, but rather allowed for class discussion almost every class. This professor provides a lot of reading and writing assignments, which is difficult, but valuable to do.
I just tried to keep quite and agree with everything he said. Only cares about his odd version of APA in grading. Classes were torture. I'm so glad its over. If you want your assignments graded late, learn nothing about CJ and be educated about his passions (veganism and animal rights) then take this class! I am surprised I survived.
Great professor, who publishes and presents regularly. I am inspired by Dr. Nocella.
Great, fun and fair grader. He will take late assignments and is very much relaxed.
Kind professor who gives extra credit and extra time. He doesn't stress on work being late. He is very flexible. He is a kind easy going professor. Make sure to take him.
Nocella gives time extra credit and edits papers with you if you ask. You have to ask engage and speak up. Powerful ideas.
The worst college experience. Nocella is a smart man but fails to teach in a practical way. He constantly defends himself with theory and maze like ideologies that are hard to understand, let alone, navigate. I usually give professors grace considering that they have many responsibilities, but it is just sad when a professor can't do the minimum
This is a great professor. Not sure the reviews by some people, but everything was clear and organized and if I had a question I could ask him.
Great caring and kind professor. Very intelligent professor who knows theory. If you cannot engage/ask question and expect to be lectured at, this is not the class for you. Nocella pushes you to think and speak up if you have questions.
This professor would help me before during and after class with fellow students to learn to write revise edit and study better. He is kind and caring.
Do not recommend him at all! Doesn't teach you about the subject, he would rather the student go and read the chapter in the textbook and then have you write a three page essay every week. Also makes you do community service instead of teaching in class. Impossible to get an A on an assignment. 10/10 would strongly not recommend.
Anthony is great professor but he demands a lot for a general education course. I have to work most of the week and we have had multiple events that are held outside of school that I cant go to.The events don't have clear expectations and Anthony told me to "make it work" multiple times. The rest of the class was great though.
Great course and he got us in the community. He has great conversations. He teaches us to get in the community and build community. He teaches us writing, presenting, and becoming a scholar.
Great professor. Taught me to write and think outside the box. Taught me that criminal justice is not just about cops, courts, and corrections.
Yes he is an amazing professor. Best professor I have taken at SLCC. People complain about him being hard, because they do not like to read and write or help others. If you want to be lazy do not take Anthony's classes. We are lucky to have someone like Anthony, who cares about others and also his students.
Always felt excited to go to class to hear what he had to say, great lecturer and easy going with the class. He made it feel easier to speak up in class. Lots of community work outside of class, so if you have a busy schedule he expects you to work it out on your own to be able to make it. Overall great professor and I would take his class again.
Anthony Nocella is so insightful, and he constantly changes the community and brings people together. He brought up topics that everyone needs to acknowledge, and no other teachers have been like him. This class seemed frustrating at first because it felt like it was just reading and writing 3 pages, but he is an impactful passionate teacher.
Great professor. I did not like writing and reading, but now I do and understand the importance of them. This is a great class to learn how to write, read, and engage with critical conversations.
He is so weird about APA format and citations. He will dock you points for missing a period in the references. He asks for no contractions, and everything is to be paraphrased. He doesn't even talk about the reading, he has the students do presentations on the readings. if you're into public speaking, and community service then this is your prof.
Professor Nocella is a great person, but he is a bad teacher. They wing assignments and doesn't follow the syllabus. He will say that there is an event that you have to go to, barely a week in advance.he is overly critical of the format that you use for an introductory class at a community college.he only plays documentaries and then skips half of it
They are a highly intelligent person, and I do believe they're passionate about what they do, it just doesn't work. My major is hard enough as it is, and this class made it impossible for me to get anything done. They assign 1 paper each week with strict rules and vague feedback. I wouldn't recommend them unless your major is related to the class.
By far the WORST professor I've ever had.
By far the WORST professor I've ever had. Seriously, avoid at all costs
Nocella is a smart and caring person, but it does not reflect in his teaching. He clearly likes his different approach and thinks it is good for students, but it is not effective and rather humiliating for students he calls out. He does not teach the material necessary for the class or papers, and only teaches about APA and his personal passions.
He likes to remind you daily that he is above you. Does not teach anything to do with the actual course.
Professor Nocella aims to inspire students, but instead reminds them why they're below him. He requires you to call him Doctor Anthony J. Nocella. He consistently spreads his very biased, liberal views. This does not teach you anything about the course. I can't tell you a single thing I learned the entire semester. He misuses class time.
Wonderful professor who great values for peace and love. He is kind and wonderful and a difficult professor who stressing writing, reading, and learning.
Wonderful professor and a person to grow and learn from. He is very focused on justice and writing a lot in APA. He will make you a better writer.
There is a lot of work, but there is so much learning sharing and critical thinking. A great professor who stresses writing reading and scholarship.
Dr. Anthony Nocella is very specific about formatting, but is equally as specific with his feedback and opportunities to resubmit work. His expectations are refreshing in community college. This class was my hardest of the semester, but also my favorite because of the social justice films required. All Americans should take his class!
He is the worst Professor I have ever had. Left a very bad taste in my mouth. He likes to embarrass and talk about students who aren't there. He also leaves reviews on his own page.
Wonderful professor. Great activities and homework. I learned a lot. If you are wanting an easy A or not to do work or not be ch]allenged, this is not your professor.
I took this course not knowing what I would learn in law and criminal justice, but it was an amazing fun course, where the professor made me feel finally .... welcome and cared for.
Nocella is a very smart person but his teaching style is ineffective. It seems there was more focus on formatting than the actual content of the course and the harsh grading makes it almost impossible to get 100% not to mention the countless times he'll ask for something that was not included in the instructions. I'm great at APA formatting now tho
A great course where I got better and reading, writing, and thinking critical with the films provided. Thanks!
Thoughtful and kind professor. Gives students a lot of opportunities to revise. A few of my friends took him and we all liked that he pushed us to be better writers, which I needed.
