He is incredibly smart. Has countless things to say regarding Philosophy and its appearance in modern and ancient times. The reading requirements are solid. Tests are more difficult, but good study and attention soften the blow. Papers are interesting.
He class is unbelievable. I never throught that I could learn whilr having so much fun. The guy is incredibly smart and funny. His style of teaching requires some reading but if you want laughs and a very interesting class then he is your man.
An actual fun teacher. However, you might get turned off by the fact he semi- picks on shy kids. Interesting to listen to, his tests seem to vary. He does seem to want you to do as best you can. Semi-hard grader; if you study you'll do fine in his class.
This man can be a total ****, especially if you're shy. Can be amusing, but his papers are vague and he grades them inconsistently. He will pick favorites, and you will know who they are. His tests are fairly difficult also.
Purposely designed a hard midterm to bomb the class (bulk of grades were Cs and Ds, only about 6 above C+ mark). Class was not what description was. Semi-interesting/stimulating discussions.
Very good teacher, very clear teaching, but sometimes has favorites and picks on shy people.
This is one of the most brilliant and engaging professors I have had in my academic career. He challenges his students in classroom discussion and on papers/exams. If you've got your head together and you put in the effort, you will gain a lot from him.
This guy is the man. But he will screw you over on the tests and papers. He can teach, but he doesnt care about about how well you do, so he might **** you over grade wise.
mean mean man. picks the least important things to test on
It's a really fun class, but at the cost of clarity and ease. He's a smart guy, but regardless he picks on shy people and def plays favorites.
Brilliant teacher. Very friendly and funny. If you pay attention tests are not a problem. He's always willing to talk and help.
He is awesome and fun!!!
he was a hard grader and picked people that he liked best
look elsewhere
Reynolds is extremely hott! His class is very entertaining. Discussions are engaging and creative. Tests and papers aren't bad if you pay very good attention in class and take good notes. Reading is a bit much at times, but one can work through it. If you are unsure, choose Reynolds!
Amazing teacher, tough grader. Won't cut you any slack because his expectations are made clear from the beginning. Really nice guy in conference though. Even though I got a C I'm taking him again. Makes you want to work harder I guess. Highly recommeded
He gives a lot of reading but only picks a certain part to discuss in class. The discussions are pretty interesting. The papers are not bad if you follow his instructions. Midterm was very easy if you take good notes and studied them but final was a bit harder- again take good notes and read books.
very bad
I'd rather be attacked by wild hyenas every Monday and Wednesday for an hour and 15 minutes than take his class again. He's arrogant, condescending, and a very inconsistent grader. I'm glad it's a new semester.
one of the most talented professors in GSP. the only teacher by whom i could not slip a bs paper. tough grader but a brilliant lecturer (one time he went off on rosseau for about 20 minutes straight after which he looked as if he were physically drained, the class actually erupted in applause). challenge yourself, take him.
Very interesting course once the links start falling into place from work to work. He speaks very fast but you get used to it- but listen or you'll miss something for sure. Tests are totally what you wouldn't expect from his teaching style but are neither hard nor complex. Make sure to have your own ideas about the work before walking in the door.
I can tell that he knows his stuff and if you are interested in his class you may like him, but i didn't. The class was soooooo boring, and he was a real hard ass in terms of grading. I would not recommend taking him
One of the most amazing professors I have encountered at NYU. Prof. Reynolds may seem intimidating at first but he's actually a really sweet guy. He's absolutely brilliant but is not an academic snob. I would HIGHLY recommend taking him!
This man is absolutely insane. I feel that I have learned from him, but find his irrational behavior to be such a huge turnoff. He is a tough grader and there are only 4 grades in the semester. If you love Art History, can understand about a billion words per minute, and can manage the ticking time bomb feeling, take it. Otherwise, RUN.
for the first 15 min or so he basically jokes around w/ the class which is great n always funny, but then he'll snap into academic mode and u feel like uve been whacked in the head w/ a board...very tough grader, very vague, hard to follow, talks fast, make sure u pay attention(if u can)and take major notes..he tests on petty details so be prepared
All of the people who have trashed Reynolds are crazy. He's one of the most energetic and enthusiastic teachers I've ever had, always igniting interest and encouraging his students to think. There's a lot of heavy reading for the course, but he makes it interesting and hard work is necessary if you want a good education.
Probably one of the most brilliant, insightful men I've ever met. If you do the reading, you'll be interested. If you're taking Reynolds for an A, you're going to have to work a little harder. I'd recommend him to anyone who actually likes learning.
Reynolds is a very smart man and will teach you a lot, but is a very hard grader and does not do first drafts, just final papers. Take this class if u want to be challenged and learn, but otherwise, avoid.
Professor Reynolds is NOT an easy teacher so if you're looking for the easy A this is not the class for you. But you are at NYU and paying some intense dinero for you education so you might as well get something out of it and Reynolds will do that for you. He's a great guy and he'll push you.
Alright, there are alot of WIMPS (couldn't say the P word cause they wouldn't post it) who are talking trash on reynolds, but he is one of the most brilliant teachers I have ever had anywhere; albeit tough, but the amount of knowledge I have acquired from this man is surely worth his grading scale: I put up a modest amount of work and got an A-
This man is a wonderful professor. He is extremely intelligent, and most certainly an asset to GSP. He's involved with NYU in other ways than just in the classroom; he's a faculty in residence. He makes an effort to get to know his students, and will help you on papers if you ask. If you're up for a challenge, (and you should be) take Reynolds.
Grades tough but you learn a lot. You have to want it but he's a genius and you'll be amazed by what you discover. Speak up and talk, do some reading, make it to class and you'll be a hundred times more intelligent at the end of the semester.
Reynolds is maybe one of the best professors not only in gsp but probably in the entire school. the man is a genius and you will definitely leave a much smarter person. the class isn't all that difficult- just take careful notes, participate and show up to class. he is also extremely helpful. i would definitely recommend 100%
Reynolds is a great professor. He teaches the way professors should. He's witty and makes the topics interesting. If you do the readings and work hard, he'll reward you. If you're a bum who just wants an easy A and is afraid to speak up in class, then this is not for you. Having your own opinions and being able to articulate them well is a MUST.
I agree Prof. Reynolds is an intelligent man but he's also pompous and unfair. At the beginning of the semester, he picks his few favorites and decides your semester grade based on the first assignment, no matter how much subsequent ones improve. He tells the class to participate but he destroys most who do. If you can avoid him, avoid him.
Reynolds is one of my all time favorite professors. He is brillant at what he does and I love his teaching style. He's able to glean things from the most seemingly tedious and mundane of books that really changes the way you look at them. If you like to work hard and be rewarded, then this quite BEASTLY professor is for you.
Although Prof Reynolds is challenging, he does a wonderful job connecting subjects and explaining his ideas. He thinks well into things and gets the student thinking. He can be a strict grader (esp if he thinks you cheated) but he's fair and a challenge with good results.
Prof. Reynolds will really challenge you in a positive way. If you read the materials, come to class on time, and participate in class you'll do well.
Professor Reynolds is a narcissistic human being. He picks his few favorites(of which I was one) in the beginning of the year. He hates if you miss class, even if you are sick, he does not care. My favoritism with him sank by the end of the semester because he was not chill. Hard Grader. Talks about useless topics. Tests on petty details. DONT TAKE
Brilliant guy who has a passion that is far too scarce these days. He wants his students to grow intellectually. People criticize him grading tough, but if you expect to get an A on every paper you shouldn't be in college. If you want to challenge yourself and emerge smarter, take Reynolds. If you're happy dwelling in complacence, don't bother.
He picks favorites in the beginning of the semester and no matter how many times he says "everyone can be his favorite" its not true. He encourages everyone to participate but only if you are going to agree with him and repeat his exact points. Anything else is not acceptable. Very harsh grader and tests are on random details. AVOID if possible.
Best professor I've had at NYU. Heavy reading load, but you also watch movies, listen to music and do research - all cultural stuff too - poetry, scripts, fiction, etc. He grades tough, but you actually LEARN something. The way his concepts develop and build off each other from start to finish makes you feel enlightened at the end of the course.
Probably one of the most biased professors I've had at NYU. Only likes you if you agree with everything he says and manage to insert a drastically liberal agenda. Makes truly objective things subjective and clearly full of himself. Passionate, yes, but enjoyable, no. Will constantly shoot you down if you disagree and doesn't value opinion.
Having him as a professor was an absolute pleasure, and if you ever find yourself in his class it is an absolute privilege and you should consider yourself very lucky. Ok you won't be able to slack on work and show up 50% of the time time, you actually have to think and give your ideas and opinions. He is absolutely brilliant, I can't stress enough
Extremely condescending. Intimidating. I found myself afraid to respond in class out of fear of embarassment and I usually don't feel that way (I actively participate). Intresting literary choices, but sometimes too much. I would avoid.
He's brilliant. He is really making me think of things in a whole new way. He's one of the smartest people I've met, and not intimidating at all. He's big on attendance and is insulted when you don't come. Show up to his class, lightly read, talk if you have a point to make. Enjoy it. Best LSP teacher there is.
Reynolds is definitely tough but you totally get your money's worth. He makes you think and wants to make sure your grasp the material and concepts and don't just regurgitate them back. Personable and fun but definitely has high expectations.
Definitely challenging and a lot of reading but this is because he is truly passionate about the subject and wants you to be too. I learned a lot and would definitely recommend him to people that actually want to learn something. Class participation a must.
His CF3 class is easily the best class I've ever taken in my life. He's brilliant.
Brilliant. Lots of reading, and thinking, but he can really open your eyes, if you have a moderate interest in the subject. Has a lot of good stuff to teach you. You can spark notes through most of the books, as long as you listen actively in class, but you should really read the short texts. Also he's a pretty cool guy. Don't miss class!
Great book list. But... Teaching is not this man's forte. He is condescending, picks favorites and is not very helpful. I'm expecting an A in this class but I would NOT recommend it to any of my friends, especially if you're not really into the material.
Best teach I've ever had. Expects a lot from his students. Makes you love the literature and really think about Cultural Foundations. Not an easy grader but makes you work for the grade. MUST TAKE HIS CLASS! Tawhid.
Best LSP class that I have taken hands down. One of the best at NYU. As everyone else says he definitely expects more from students than do most professors. An A is definitely not unattainable and even if you're only willing to put in some effort, the man is worth it. Finally one of the professors giving student's their money's worth.
Reynolds is very passionate about what seems to be his personal understanding of reality. He is quite warped up in his own head, and should step back from the microscope through which he overanalyzes the world. He is very condescending, and some what of a hypocrite- he will always offer extra help, but seemingly never has "time" to follow through.
Dr. Reynolds is incredibly smart and talented at garnering interest in the literature he teaches. YOU MUST PARTICIPATE. If you pay attention and make contributions to the class, you will do well in this class. Reynolds is the best professor I've had at NYU; I'm taking him for CF I, II and III. This is how to get your money's worth out of NYU!
So upset he isn't teaching CFII next semester because I would take him in a heartbeat! Very interesting discussions, connecting different works. Definietly participate and take notes. He is very invested in teaching and it shows-it even makes you more interested in the material. By far the best class I am taking. Effort= A
Great professor. He is maintains complete clarity while discussing his subject matter. At the same time, he also manages to keep the class entertained. His classes have a strong emphasis on discussion and makes each participant feel that they are a part of the class.
I have found Reynolds to be very condescending. I have not yet sat through a class without feeling attacked by degrading comments about my intelligence. He is passionate about the subject matter, but lacks the teaching skills (or kindness?) necessary to make students feel the same. His language is difficult to understand. I do not reccommend.
Absolutely gorgeous professor. Passionate about his job. Instils the desire to learn and participate. As long as you read, discuss and take notes, you will excel in the class. Some texts are boring, but it helps that a total hottie is explaining "The Satanic Verses" to you.
Literally the most boring, self-absorbed prof I have ever had. Transferred out of his class because it was so incredibly dull. Discussion did not go very deep nor was it particularly enlightening. And if I have to hear him comment about a text blowing my mind one more time I will literally drop out of NYU.
Seriously amazing teacher. I can see how others would think that he's full of himself, but the guy's kind of brilliant and is able to clearly talk about these obscure quasi-philosophical concepts in books and art. Gets kind of pissy if you don't do the work, so do the reading! It's a fairly heavy workload but worth it. He knows what he's doing.
Overall, I learned a lot of amazing things in his class. He selects great texts and is very knowledgeable about them. However, he does choose favorites that agree with his ideas. Reynolds constructs a great class/syllabus, but I found the discussions lacking and often one-sided with no room for your own interpretation. Tough class, tough professor.
Out of all three CF classes, his was my favorite, but that's because I enjoy SF. Indeed, he teaches works that take the philosophy you encounter in SF, so he really focuses on aesthetics: philosophy in art and literature. If you don't like SF or philosophy, you might not enjoy his class.
Professor Reynolds' CFIII is a very philosophy intense class. It is far more challenging than any other class I've taken at LSP, but it's the first time I've really felt like I was in college. Take him if you want to learn instead of call upon high school knowledge.
CFIII with Reynolds stands out as one of my favorite classes from the LS curriculum. He is passionate about texts and explains their relation to each other and cultural context extremely well. If you are willing to do the reading and participate in this class, you will leave having learned a tremendous amount. (Also, he's just a really cool guy)
Reynolds is honestly one of the best professors I've had at NYU he has such a passion for all the text and is very open to talk through any questions you may have. Also he's really cool. He made texts I never would have dreamed of reading highly interesting. I wish I could take 4 more classes with him.
The dude is well structured and dedicated to teaching his student. Would recommend if you want to be challenged intellectually.
Had him a couple years ago as a sophomore & I wish I could retake his class. Recently found my notes from this class & I remember not understanding anything but now it all makes so much more sense. Def has high expectations for his students. But one of the best classes I've ever taken. So wish I could take him again.
The most amazing class I have ever taken, at NYU or otherwise. Professor Reynolds forced me to make connections and push myself intellectually in a way that I never have before. The class is very difficult, but if you put adequate effort in, you will go places academically that you never though you could. Improved me as a writer, reader & student.
Though many LSP classes are a joke, this class is one of the most intellectually demanding I've ever taken. Some of the texts are extremely challenging, but very interesting. I don't think he expects anyone to fully understand all the material, but as someone else said, this was the first class I took that felt college level rather than high school
This class changed my life and that's not an exaggeration. Yes, it's difficult. Yes, it's a lot of work. But I've found myself continuing to think about what I learned in this course and using the knowledge I gained in other courses and aspects of my life. It will challenge you and change your entire worldview, for the better. Incredible professor.
Best teacher I ever had. Learn from him if you have the chance.
This guy is super smart and a great lecturer. He demands active participation and unless you connect personally with him, like his love of Massive Attack, prepare to work VERY hard because he is a downright brutal grader. If you want a challenge, take his class. If you want an easy grade, run for the exit.
Absolutely amazing.
Definitely not an "easy" class, but so worth it; he is one of the most intelligent people I've ever met and his personality and lectures are fantastic. The material is very interesting, and he makes it even more so. If you listen while he's talking, do the reading/semi-thoroughly skim, and talk at least once per class, you're golden.
TAKE REYNOLDS. I am blown away after every single class- he is one the most intelligent people you will ever meet and my favorite professor this semester. He is able to articulately synthesize huge, earth shattering concepts with respect to both detail and overarching aesthetic themes. Funny, energetic, engaging. Am definitely taking him again!
probably one of the best professors I've ever had! energetic, engaging, brilliant. definitely take his class if you have the chance.
this semester i didn't miss a single one of reynold's- absolutely amazing professor
If you do not understand something from the class, the guy will get mad at you. Definitely makes people feel bad for giving wrong answers. Very difficult class and assigns lots of homework with hard readings. If he just doesn't like you, expect a bad grade regardless of how hard you work for it. Learning material that no other class is learning.
just amazing. learned more in his class than all my other classes combined, honestly. am still thinking about the things i learned- would highly recommend
just wow. full of passion about what he is teaching, very dynamic and engaging, and makes his grading process very clear. he can seem a little intimidating at first but is honestly funny, eloquent, and helpful. really knows how to take command of a classroom but can also be a wonderful listener and encourages discussion.
is he a super easy grader? no. but when you get an A, youll know you really deserved and earned it. encourages group collaboration and participation. i loved his class so much that i plan to take him again for cf3! organized, passionate, hilarious, brilliant. nothing but good things to say about him!
reynolds approaches cultural foundations unlike most profs. he is politically woke, witty, and knows how to pull information out of his students versus just lecturing at them. still thinking about the things i learned in his class today! one of the most intelligent people you will meet ever
You pay your tuition for people like him. I took him two years in a row initially almost receiving a D, wanted to prove myself and ended up getting an A the second time. He challenges you, forces you to develop your thoughts, knows how to get you to do that based on how you learn. Participating in class discussion helps more than reading everything
my retention of material from first semester cf1 is amazing- still thinking and applying what i learned in his class now
His lectures are extremely interesting but get ready to study for his exams which are really really hard. There is one paper to write, which he is extremely critical while grading. Get ready to work but you learn A LOT in his class.
Best professor Ive ever had the pleasure of taking. Amazing lectures. Made me see the world differently. If you read, show up, participate, and study for the exams, youll do just fine. If you dont want to actually put in any effort, dont take this class - but if youre willing to work a little, youll learn a lot!
I learned so much from this class. It's one of the most interesting courses I've ever taken and that's so much because of his personality, he's such an intelligent person and you'll get so much out of this if you put in the effort, however, it is quite the difficult class
Professor Reynolds was very hostile, and generally unapproachable. Whenever I had a question, I felt like I couldn't ask him because I felt like he'd patronize me for not knowing the answer. He lacked basic empathy/compassion for students during the face of a pandemic. He's also an extremely difficult grader. My advice, take CF with anyone else.
Professor Reynolds is the most unapproachable, condescending professor Ive ever crossed paths with. He expects you to know so much and honestly makes you feel stupid. I recommend doing everything you can not to have him as your professor.
Honestly, this was my best class this semester. He helped me get a different outlook of the discipline, and developed my interest in it. He is accessible outside of class. You just gotta read for each class and be ready to talk about the material for discussion. Don't take him if you don't want to put some effort in.
Anthony Reynolds is the nastiest professor I have encountered at NYU. He is rude, condescending, loves humiliating students, has a "holier than thou" kind of attitude. Most of his grading is based on grammar(??? Barely gives any notes regarding content of paper and just talks about how bad your grammar is. You either agree with him or you're wrong.
THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR EVRER. HES LITERALLY THE RUDEST PERSON EVER. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. YOY WILL FAIL FOR NO REASON.
This class is the perfect fit for any student with an academically masochist tendency. His class is very challenging, drawing heavily on western philosophy and expects students to know the western canon. So if you're a student from the East like, expect to get messed up. You do learn a lot from this class if you actually spend time to study tho.
Treats his students with no respect and genuinely does not care about his students. Save yourself and if you are stuck with this guy, I'm sorry and I went through it too.
Material is average but the Professor was extremely unprofessional. Picked on students in class and was not understanding of student needs. You only learn to repeat back exactly what he says. Had to write down every word just to pass. Unnecessary effort for this level of a class. Final was god awful. He hates his job. Got an A and learned nothing.
The worst class I've ever taken. The professor is so brutal. Tried participating in class until he ignored me but took the same answer from the guy behind me. Extremely biased, knew a person who did way worse than me but we still received the same grades. The course mostly features American/European men except for two books. pls don't take it, RUN
The professor your middle school teacher warned you about. The amount of effort you need to put into this class is not worth it if you arent going into a similar field. Gives up pretty quickly. Almost childish. Didnt enjoy the class atmosphere at all, despite others trying their best to lighten the mood.
Anthony is an incredibly knowledgable and caring professor who will PUSH you to succeed. I remember the first grade I received from him on a midterm was a C-, the only time I have gotten a grade like that in college. But it was because my midterm sucked! He forced me to step up my academic game and I am so grateful for it.
Do not take him. He is truly one of the most disrespectful and unpleasant men I've ever met. He constantly degrade and disrespects his students when they ask questions or are confused. His grading is random and depends on how much he agrees with what you say. I went to office hours he did nothing but refuse to answer any question I gave him.
LEAVE HIM IF U WANT TO BE ALIVE. NOTORIOUSLY HARSH GRADER. No scoring guidelines for paper at all. No guide for exams that are extremely hard. Always give negative feedback and hurt your self-confidence. Never cares about students' workload. Usually have to read about 100 pages within one day. Always give assignments at evening that's due tomorrow.
Most annoying professor ever. His class is so stressful, and he wants students to be EXTREMELY active in class or he would be angry. Taking lots of notes during lecture or he won't ever explain again unless you ask before the tests. This person hurts your self-esteem hard, his office hour will make you feel you know nothing. AVOID HIM!
Not only a horrible professor but a horrible person. Please spare your mental well being and avoid at all costs!!!
Anthony Reynolds was the worst professor I have ever come across in my 19 years of living. This man is ridiculous. Every single class he mentions he has a brazilian wife. If you take this class, you are signing up for failure. He is the most condescending prof. He told me he refuses to let me make up work, and signed his emails "Good Luck". hatehim
The hardest class I've ever taken in college but totally worth it. This man is what we're paying for.
He is unnecessarily tough -- in terms of grading and as a person in general. Was not helpful, and made students feel bad for asking questions. Pretty sure he said he was retiring but if you do have a class with him, switch out.
I took Reynolds 2 semesters in a row. I was absent a lot. Just participate and show him that you care and you will be good. It's not rocket science. His exams are super difficult if you don't take good notes in class... I definitely spent days cramming for them, but what you learn in that class will change the way you view the world, seriously.
Please DON'T take this class. WORST teacher ever. Pick that 8 am over this class. I literally only picked him because it was between that or an 8am. So disrespectful and quite literally doesn't care about your problems. The midterm is SO hard and he literally sets you up for failure by telling you your gonna fail. He doesn't even your read emails.
Very interesting lectures even though he is a tough professor, you have to stay on your toes and listen to everything he says in class. halfway through the year I regretted taking him but he is lenient; if you are a good student he will reward you with a good grade even if you do badly in exams, he looks at the whole picture not just the tests.
Don't take Reynolds if you want an easy A. He assigns a lot of readings and you have to pay attention to everything he says in class in order to do well on exams, but his class will change your life. 10/10 recommend, but again, you have to be willing to put in the work.
Started off the semester by saying that it's rare people pass his course. I honestly felt awful after this class because of how much I unnecessarily struggled just to get a passing grade. Don't sit in the back of the class because he will most likely point you out for it. Be ready for exaggerated harsh grading and getting put on the spot.
This professor is the worst I have had. Very disrespectful. Singles students out because he chose not to like them. I have witnessed him single out international students for their struggle with English grammar. Was terrible to watch. Curriculum is based on agreeing with him. If student has a slightly different outlook he will humiliate them.
Prof Reynolds is nice and cool. He assigns readings every class, and the lectures are inspirational. He gives helpful feedbacks on the essay, which we had a chance to improve the grade by submitting a improved version by the end of the semester. Getting a straight A during the semester is hard, but he improved our final grade.
Professor Reynolds is tough but brilliant. His class is challenging, requiring diligent note-taking and engagement. Use unstuckstudy, ChatGPT, and the free textbook to supplement your studies - it really helps. The work is worth it though, you'll gain invaluable insights.
Prof. Reynolds is truly intelligent. Readings are fascinating. It is crucial that you take thorough notes and participate in lecture. He will explain every reading in a simple way but it is almost impossible to understand if you don't understand the basics of the material. He can be harsh and blunt. You're fine as long as you show him you care.
run. even though he's retiring
Consider another professor if you're not willing to put in the necessary effort.
If you are willing to show up to class and participate you'll be fine. Exams are relatively easy, just make sure you're taking good notes. The final usually becomes a take home exam.
I took him my first year, and honestly, he talks at you & has no slides on key things you need to know. Therefore, you have to write everything down that he says (literally everything). He's rude and is unhelpful, and makes the class boring and ten times harder than it should be. Everyone in our class would have preferred another professor. RUN lol
