Phenomenal teacher and person. Loved every minute of this class. So smart, genuine and engaging. Taught me to love D&C, and helped me develop skills to get more out of the scriptures in the future. This class can bless and change your life.
Professor Sweat is a young, intelligent, energetic, professor. He has incredible knowledge of the gospel and a strong testimony. Lectures were great, homework was reasonable, and tests were fairly easy if you studied. I recommend him to everyone who needs to take a DC class.
This is exactly what a BYU religion class should be like…easy, but inspiring and uplifting. He is hilarious and his classes were like a punch in the face with the Spirit. Awesome!
I've had some amazing religion professors at BYU, but Brother Sweat has topped my list by far. His stories about church history blow me away. I've never learned so much in one religion class. His sense of humor makes the lecture hall seem to actually rumble from laughter. I'm signing up for the second half from him without a doubt.
Best religious class I've taken at BYU. He's so insightful and I went to every class because it was so good. There are 2 assignments every week but they are really easy. A few papers also.
Good teacher, but lots of unnecessary busy work for a religion class. 2 papers throughout the semester which are annoying.
Brother Sweat is the bomb.
awesome guy. good lectures although he lets the crazy students distract him and he goes off on tangents. easy tests - he tells you exactly what will be on the test in the review. there is a ton of busy work. a reading journal for every class and 2-3 essay every month plus miscellaneous work. but all those points help you get an easy A
love LOVE him and his teachings!!! Tons of knowledge, great spirit! There's quite a load of homework but you learn so much. Doesn't accept late homework. Attend the lectures, you'll be spiritually uplifted and you'll do well on the tests too. He made the D&C so interesting and so precious! I was always looking forward to the next lecture.
Bro. Sweat is awesome! I have taken all of my religion credits already and Bro. Sweat is by far my favorite of all the religion professors I've had. I've learned so much from him about the D & C. There are a few big assignments but as long as you do them correctly, you'll get an A. He tells you exactly what to study for tests. Awesome guy!
Great professor! Very insightful, very knowledgeable, humorous, chill, and keeps the class entertaining. Definitely recommend.
My favorite religion teacher thus far. Funny guy. Tests aren't very hard but there is some busywork.
He tells you everything you need to study for on the Midterm and Final. Very Organized class and assignments due dates are clearly marked on the syllabus.Do all the assignments and study exactly what he tells you on the tests and you'll get an A ! Funny professor and great spirit.
Brother Sweat is one of the best professors that I have ever had. He cares about his students learning important things and he always explains himself clearly. He's very mindful of his students' needs and does his best to cater to them. Great professor and person.
He taught a lot of worthwhile things in this class and you can learn quite a lot. He has a few written assignments that you will have to invest some time into. He sometimes said things where I wish he had cited a source.
Brother Sweat is my favorite teacher I have ever had at BYU. This is the perfect balance for a religion class. The assignments and reading are easy and so worth your time. Very spiritual too.
Great man, and I feel like he is super spiritual, knows a lot, but will quickly admit if he doesn't know something rather than theorize or give his own opinion. Tests were very fair and I loved the class.
Great man. Knows the Gospel, knows how to teach, and loves it. Good at answering even obscure questions, although he could cite his sources more--but overall he's brilliant. Just don't be an idiot like most college students and expect an A from zero effort.
Sweat definitely knows his stuff and gives a lot of good context to the D&C. He encouraged questions and talked thoroughly about difficult issues in a way that was honest, insightful and clear. This class is more time consuming than many religion classes though. Written assignments due before every class and four papers. Only 2 easy tests though.
Dr. Sweat changed my life. I'm leaving on a mission soon. He attends global religious conferences and demonstrates fantastic, well-rounded (as in from the perspective of other religions too) understanding of the Godhead and our own religion. And history (need a teacher like this for the D&C! He doesn't skirt around anything, yet very tactful). YES.
Great at lectures. Very good at translating dialogue and emotions into something more relatable to students. Makes sense of difficult doctrine, gave me new perspectives on certain things, and makes sure you know when he's sharing his own thoughts vs doctrine. Also ready to admit he doesn't know something. Reading & response due before each class.
Top-notch professor. Great at teaching, funny lectures, and overall fun class. Loads of work for a religion class, but its worth it. The tests are easy, so this really is one of those classes that your grade is based on the time you put into it.
Great religion teacher. It's not ridiculously difficult. The point is really to help you become a more Christ like individual. Do the insight submissions, and do put some time into your papers and you'll do great! So spiritually uplifting. And he's funny too.
Here's the thing about religion professors at BYU: some are more like seminary easy-going, spiritual teachers and others want you to memorize every general authority quote and church history date in the book. Brother Sweat falls in the first category - which is the kind I like. He will teach you, and bonus - don't have to memorize any dates!!!
Honestly my favorite professor that I have had at BYU. Tests are easy and extremely fair. I learned a lot from him, and loved the way he explained the D&C. There are assignments due every class period, but it is way easy. Take the class, you will not regret it!
Do the work and you will do great! He tells you everything that will be on the test! He is great!
Professor Sweat is fantastic! He's seriously been the greatest! He knows a TON about church history, and he isn't afraid to answer the hard questions about church history. He doesn't shy away from it, he's honest and straight forward. He really loves the gospel, and it shows in his teaching. Take it from Sweat!
I took D&C First Half from Bro. Sweat with some friends last semester and we HAD to take second half from him! Class consists of short reading insight papers that are due before each class, but they are quick and easy. One (easy) 3-page paper, and two exams with an in-class review of everything needed before you take it. MUST TAKE FROM HIM!!
BEST RELIGION TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD. Brother Sweat is so loving and sweet and funny! He loves the gospel and he loves his students. Not only did I learn a lot about the Restoration of the gospel, my testimony was strengthened a ton. He is just solid. So kind and so funny. Tests are easy if you study. Just the best. Please take this class.
I LOVED this class with Brother Sweat! His lectures are entertaining and I learned something interesting in each class period. The assignments are sometimes long, but I learned a lot about Church history and really enjoyed the reading. I would recommend taking this class from Brother Sweat!
Brother Sweat is an awesome lecturer, he tries to help you on the tests by showing what the learning points are of his lecture so you can decipher what to study. Hard part is he doesn't always make clear the answers to his learning points. His lectures are involving but often runs out of time leaving you to fill in the cracks. Still very insightfu
I took Dr Sweat for the new Foundations of the Restoration class, and I LOVED it. He knows his stuff and really tries hard to balance doctrine, application of principles, and history. Go to class and take GOOD notes to get ready for the tests. Keep on top of your semester project.
This guy is the bomb! Truly inspiring, favorite religion teacher, if only, he taught all religion courses. The class readings could be a little long, but it just depends if you're looking for only passing or learning about the Restoration. Analysis assignments made you reflect and apply the course material. The Restoration project was spectacular!
Brother Sweat is hands down one of my favorite teachers I've ever had. He is hilarious and really knows his stuff and he wants you to as well. The readings were long sometimes but they weren't awful. His lectures were fantastic and he gave you a chance to discuss what you read with the person sitting next to you. He is phenomenal! Would take again.
Brother Sweat is phenomenal and he genuinely cares about his students. My testimony and understanding of the Restoration grew so much. There's a lot of reading, but it's good stuff. I found the tests to be somewhat difficult, but doable. Very highly recommended!
Brother Sweat is the best religion teacher I've had. He loves the work and it really shows. He will make you laugh, but also he'll make you look at church history in a way you've never thought of it before. The lectures are fun and there's lots of student interaction.
P. Sweat is awesome. I love his teaching style, and the readings each day were very helpful and talked about topics that aren't normally talked about. The only thing is he teaches 1500 students so all tests are multiple choice and there is no mercy for forgetting assignments. I really loved the semester project, which you can decide what to do.
I loved this class! This has been the best class I've taken in college! The material is super interesting and the lectures present it in such an effective way. I would highly recommend taking this class from Dr. Sweat!
Most people like him because he's funny and the lectures are informative. However, I felt that he was arrogant and that he pushed his interpretations of scriptures on us even when they weren't backed up by doctrine. Also, his study guides are vague and don't do a good job preparing you for the exams.
If you are like me then you like to take easy religion classes. This was not one of those classes. He gave us long reading assignments. I didn't know what to study for tests. And the tests were confusing. I hated going to lectures because we ended up talking about irrelevant things. I wasn't even sure if all of it was doctrine.
Professor Sweat is an amazing teacher of the Restoration! He cleared up several confusing issues for me. Although presenting facts are important to him, the most important part is addressing the questions of the students. He makes it a comfortable and safe environment to share doubts. He is also hilarious, and makes efforts to show he cares!
I thought I had good professors until this class. He is the best. Fair warning, Foundations of the Restoration has more reading than his other classes (anywhere from 20-70 pages). He helps you sift through all the info with focus questions (responses not mandatory, just helpful). Funny, standup guy. You will learn a lot and he's approachable.
Professor Sweat is one of the best religion reacher I had. His syllabus explains everything you need to know to excel in his class. If you keep up with the reading and the assignments (which aren't very many), you should get an A and learn a tone about D&C
I went into Foundations of the Restoration dreading the subject, but Sweat is amazing and so inspirational. He is the kind of teacher that is so smart and has such a strong testimony that he makes you want to learn more. I wish his lectures were longer. Online quizzes are a little hard (some reading), and weekly 1 page papers. Overall loved it!
Loved this class! I felt like I learned a ton from Bro. Sweat but it wasn't hard. There are mini assignments every day which feel tedious but go quick and really contributed to my understanding. Tests are easy, just follow the study guides. He's really great, would take another class from him.
Dr. Sweat is amazing- take this class! He make sit clear that he wants you to learn, and in order to learn he expects you to do some work, but it's all worth it, I have learned a lot from this class and came out with a stronger testimony. He is funny and passionate about the material!
I enjoyed this class a lot, but it is definitely one of the more difficult classes I've taken at BYU. Brother Sweat is a great guy and his lectures are stellar, I often left his class in awe of what I had just learned. The test was pretty difficult for me and the readings are all extremely long. Awesome teacher, difficult class.
Brother Sweat is the man! I loved his class and learned so much about the D&C! I am going to take more classes from him in the future. Such a great guy. Really enjoyed everything about this class.
Hands down best Religion professor I've had yet! There is quite a bit of homework and work for the class which I was afraid of at first but it really isn't hard and they're awesome assignments. Just a midterm and final and he personally has reviews for both. He's so passionate and knows his stuff! Definitely recommend taking from him!
Most life-changing class I've taken. His approach is honest and educated--he doesn't skirt around the issues. He's very clear in his grading criteria and for the most part, you grade yourself. Readings and quizzes for every class but they're always fascinating. Would love to sit in on this class for the rest of my life to soak up all the details.
Not a fan. He was a decent lecturer, but I had more work in this class than all my other classes combined. You have a quiz every day before class and you have to read a boatload for every quiz. Also there is a 13 hour semester project, weekly essay, and the tests are way tough. Miss class once, lose 5 points. Way too much work for religion.
Professor Sweat has a perfect balance of spiritual and funny which made each class period go by so fast! He is super smart and spiritual and cares so much about every single student. Tests are super easy if you just go to his review. The reading are long but you can skim them and still answer the quiz questions. He really listens to the students.
If you are looking for a religion class that is a lot of work and a lot of extra information, take Bro Sweat. I liked his class, and it was interesting to learn all the history of stuff, but I wish it wasn't so much extra work. He gives you TONS of readings and a weekly project that takes 2+ hours sometimes. He's great, but I wouldn't do it again.
Brother Sweat is amazing!! I learned so much in this class, and I would retake it in a heartbeat! His lectures are very informative, but also incredibly entertaining. Yes, it does require some work, but it is all worth it! If you can take this class from him, definitely do it!
Foundations of the Restoration is AMAZING. Brother Sweat was a great teacher. He taught difficult parts of Church history in a respectful but bold way. There is homework and projects, but they are great opportunities to learn. I learned so much. I would recommend this class to everyone.
I loved this class. There was definitely a lot of homework (there are assignments due before every class and a few long papers), but he is a relatively fair grader. He has study guides for the midterm and final, which help a lot. Make sure to go to class, as he talks about things that aren't on powerpoints that you will be tested on. So take notes!
He's been my favorite religion professor so far, I learned so much! His tests aren't that hard, you have weekly reading assignments and a couple papers. He's always open to questions and really helps you learn and strengthen your testimony. I'd love to take another class from him!
Brother Sweat is very knowledgeable about the D&C. He helps you to understand how to read the D&C in context, a skill most of us don't have. Overall, it was extremely useful, but there were some times, particularly towards the end of the class where I felt there were some things he preached that weren't exactly correct. However, typically he rocks.
My favorite religion class at BYU. Prof Sweat doesn't skirt around strange parts of church history, and teaches the D&C in a way that illuminates the trials early church members went through. His knowledge on the subject runs deep, and he teaches how to analyze the doctrine in context, a skill that few religion professors have. Absolutely recommend
I LOVE PROFESSOR SWEAT!!!! He is the best teacher I have ever had. He knows his stuff and he loves the gospel. He is really good at explaining things and if you go to class, do the readings, and study the study guide you will be fine. He makes it clear what you will be tested on and the tests are easy if you go to class and have a desire to learn
For some reason I did not enjoy this class very much. Sweat is a great guy and a pretty good teacher but there was more work than I had anticipated and the essays are graded pretty tough
Honestly, way harder than I expected. It was so much work for a religion class. Which is okay if that's what you're looking for, because the lectures are amazing, but at some points I felt like all the extra religion hw was pushing me past my breaking point. I don't regret taking it, just wish I was better prepped for how much work it would be
Learned more in this religious class than any other. Fantastic lectures and content.
Brother Sweat is great. I would have received an A if it weren't for one of the papers, but overall the class wasn't difficult. You have to do the assigned readings and take the pre-class quizzes, which is annoying, but they're easy. It takes some time, but it's definitely doable. Class isn't super helpful, but you have to report your attendance.
Professor Sweat is now one of my favorite religion teachers at BYU! He teaches from the heart and his class teaches you so much. My testimony grew so much in his class. Yes, there are a lot of assignments, but they're doable and enjoyable! And the tests aren't too bad if you study! I highly recommend taking this class!!
Bro. Sweat is an amazing teacher! He definitely knows his stuff and I walked away knowing so much more about the history of the Church. He makes things very clear and is willing to answer questions anytime. There are quizes online before every class and a one-page paper due every week, but there are pretty easy.
Prof Sweat is not all he's cracked out to be. When asking for help he refers you to the TA. Sometimes insensitive to students struggling with faith. However, he knows his stuff and does have a passion for what he teaches. He's an extremely harsh and unreasonable grader on papers, but tests were pretty straight forward.
Brother Sweat is the best! Take any class you can get from him! Yes, there are readings and homework, but I never once felt like they were busy work. Each assignment strengthened my testimony so much! I left this class with such a greater understanding of church history and basic doctrine. He has great charts and visuals!
Don't get me wrong, I love Sweat, and he is a great lecturer. The material in foundations of the restoration is extremely fascinating. The amount of pre-reading, and homework, just isn't worth it. He gives a lot more busy work than most religion classes, and if you have a tough schedule, this isn't the "easy religion class" to add.
Dr. Sweat was a nice guy who taught a relatively good lecture, but the amount of work required for a two credit religion class was way too much. If you're looking for an easy religion course don't take this one. He has a couple of papers for you to write, but the most annoying is the daily writing assignments. Too much work for a religion course.
Professor Sweat has an amazing grasp of the restoration era. He understands what points give students difficulty, and is willing to address the needs as they arise. Of my 14 semesters at BYU, this is one of the best classes I have taken.
If you're looking for an incredibly well-structured religion class where you feel the Spirit and learn a ton every class period, look no further. Was it a hard class? Kind of. Was there a lot of work for 2 religion credits? I would say so. But Brother Sweat is an incredible lecturer who knows his stuff and I found every lecture very engaging.
Good lecturer, knows his stuff. Clear. Fair (lots of reading though). The only problem I had was that some of homework/test questions were unfair since you were required to put down a few times why you have a testimony of a certain doctrine, which is unfair for the majority of the people who don't happen to have an absolutely perfect testimony...
Sweat is funny, he knows his stuff, and really dives into what the First Presidency wants us to gain from this new course. It is a really good balance of history, doctrine, and application. He is a really good lecturer and his tests are very fair. Keep up on the reading quizzes and weekly assignments! All the little points really add up!
There is SO MUCH reading--at least a couple of hours per class. There are a lot of nit-picky details to memorize. If you don't like memorization or the Restoration, then find another class. He was decent as a teacher, though, and his tests were pretty fair.
Brother Sweat is the best! He gives great lectures and his study guide each test is very helpful. As long as you follow the rubrics on the papers and look at the study guide ahead of time it is a very easy class. Lots of readings but they are all meaningful and designed to really help you internalize the doctrine. Great teacher.
Brother Sweat is amazing! This is by far my most favorite class taken at BYU. He explains the history and content of D&C in a very relatable way that really helped me have a better understanding of the restoration. He gives you a study guide for the tests; if you study that, the tests aren't bad.
He's not all he's cracked up to be. Reading isn't all that bad and tests are pretty fair but several essays were graded in such a way that it was near impossible to get full points. He does this because he gets in trouble if he gives out too many A's. Everything seemed formulaic rather than focused on spiritual application.
Brother Sweat is the best religion professor I have ever had! Although there might be a lot of reading for a religion class, this class makes it all worth it. He has the best insights and stories, I always learn so much when I go to lecture.
If you're struggling with your testimony of the Restoration, take Brother Sweat's class. If you just want a teacher who knows his stuff, makes you laugh, and genuinely cares about you, take Brother Sweat's class. If you want a religion class that focuses more on projects and assignments than nitpick tests, take Brother Sweat's class. Do it! :)
Brother Sweat is one of the best religion professors I have had at BYU. It's the first religion class that I actually learned something new and interesting every single day in class. He isn't afraid to talk about any subject about he church and is very transparent about everything! Awesome teacher!
He's great in class! There's usually an hour's worth of reading each class, with a 3 point quiz before class (easy) and a weekly analysis assignment (sometimes easy, sometimes hard). His test questions are killer. He really knows his stuff and makes sure you leave class without wanting to leave the church.
Brother Sweat is my all time favorite teacher at BYU! His lectures are full of the Spirit and are always applicable. I leave class feeling enlightened! His tests are literal copies of the study guide. Reading is a little heavy and the quizzes take a bit of time, but TOTALLY worth it. He is the best!
Dr. Sweat is a really nice guy, don't get me wrong. I'm just not sure why people rave about his class. It's alright, but it's D&C. It's going to be different from BoM and NT classes. I felt like this class had a lot more to do with memorizing contextual information than anything else, but it was still decent. A's are completely possible.
Easily the best Religion Professor I have ever taken a class from at BYU. His Foundations of the Restoration class was full of facts and quotes that made each class well worth attending. The semester project strengthened my understanding of the Restoration, and even the tests caused me to learn. Each class was spiritual and mind-blowing.
Brother Sweat is an awesome teacher, but almost ruins the class with the long quiz assigments and papers. I love the lectures but hate the class otherwise. He wants his students to be D&C scholars after the course.
This was the best class I have ever taken at BYU. I am convinced that there is nobody more knowledgeable about the Restoration that Bro. Sweat. But the best part is that he is funny and makes it INTERESTING! I loved ever y single lecture. i 100% would take it again. Every week there are 2 quizzes and a short assignment but its totally worth it.
Probably the best religion teacher I've ever had. He really makes the subject matter come alive and become an enjoyable and interesting experience
Loved the lectures. That's what made this class so amazing. He's descriptive, inspirational, and teaches for us to understand the info. Even though the powerpoints are all online, I would hate to miss lectures.2 quizzes & one short essay analysis a week, filled with useful information. Study guides are spelled out specifically & true to the exams.
Sweat is an alright teacher. He will beat you to death with busy work and has mandatory attendance. You will learn a lot via grunt work but your testimony will not be strengthened. Love the man, hate his class.
Brother Sweat was an amazing teacher. He really knows how to relate to the students, and I enjoyed his lectures. There is a lot of information so be ready to take good notes, but he has good study guides and the tests are straightforward. Most of what we turned in was self-graded though, so if you don't like that I wouldn't take from him.
There is a 6-8 page paper due in the third month of the semester as well as a 4-5 page paper due in the second month. Both papers have very specific criteria, which is a good thing because it gives you a basis to build off. If you do the readings, take notes in class, use the study guide to prep for the test, and apply what you learn, you're set!
Bro Sweat is one of my favorite teachers ever. He really knows the restoration backward and forwards. His lectures are phenomenal - I learned so much about the formation of the church! He really cares about his students as well. Take this class! You won't regret it.
Brother Sweat is everything I want out of a religion professor: He's really funny, shows genuine care for the students, and REALLY knows D&C! I wish I had taken this before my mission - he handles the church controversies exceptionally. Best of all, the final project is whatever you want it to be. I made a card game. My friend made a radio drama.
If you are taking foundations of the restoration, take it from brother sweat. Tests are not too difficult and are according to the study guides which he gives; only one midterm and a final. Great lectures, informative readings which can get long at times, easy pre-class quizzes, one term-long project that requires 14 hours, start early, ace it.
Professor Sweat is awesome! He talks clearly and openly about gospel topics that are hard to understand. He challenges you to work hard and truly develop a testimony for you self. He teaches from a very education standpoint, which I found refreshing for a religion class. Make sure you put in proper effort with the semester long project.
I thought this class was a lot of reading for being only a two credit class. However, Dr. Sweat made not learning impossible. He's a great guy and teacher. Despite my initial dislike of him, I learned a lot and he really opened my heart to sensitive subjects in church history. Dr. Sweat is a solid religion teacher.
Brother Sweat is super knowledgeable and a great teacher. He is passionate, kind, and funny. Class is interesting. The assignments due everyday can be done quickly, but the papers and commentary assignments were graded harder than I expected.
Oh my lanta, where to start?! Sweat is my favorite professor here at BYU. He's so caring, friendly, optimistic, intelligent, well-rounded, artistic, and hilarious! I wish I could fit more classes from him in my schedule because he's phenomenal. From him I learned more about the D&C than I have from any other teacher; he knows so much of the context
Best religion class ever! There is a lot of work to do, but it's so organized and interesting that it doesn't feel hard at all. The content is fascinating and has really helped me gain a stronger understanding of the restoration of the gospel. I love Brother Sweat! Take this class!
Professor Sweat is the BEST professor! I took his Foundations of the Restoration class and would happily take it over again. I looked forward to this class and learned so much about the restoration! I didn't find this class tough, but time consuming. The tests are easy, but there are quizzes due before each class and assignments due every Saturday.
Sweat is very knowledgeable and you will learn a lot! I didn't feel the spirit as much as I would have liked in his class and the work load made me focus less on the spiritual things and more on getting a good grade. He is funny and entertaining but there is more work than a religion class should have.
Professor Sweat isn't afraid to take about taboo religious topics in a faithful and honest way. I learned so much about the Doctrine and Covenants. I do think his course requires a lot of work, but most of it was very valuable. Tests are decently difficult, but manageable. I'd strongly recommend taking this class from Sweat!
His lectures were fantastic, but the project due at the end of the semester was just one thing too many as far as the workload goes in my opinion for a two credit class. Tests are based off of power point slide questions so they are easy to pass. I was usually able to do the entire weeks worth of homework in about an hour or two.
Take anything you can from Brother Sweat! His lectures are amazing, he isn't afraid to talk about controversial issues, and you learn SO MUCH. The readings are good, but you get mostly the same information in class. His lectures are very ambitious -- he rarely gets through everything he wants to. One big project throughout the semester, two tests,.
This class is the essence of busy work. You're probably going to ignore this comment and take the class anyway. You're then probably going to find yourself mid-semester while taking a quiz/doing an assignment, saying, "This is such busy work", and then you'll probably remember what I already told you, "This class is the essence of busy work".
Sweat knows more about the D&C and the restoration than anyone I have met so you learn a lot and his lectures are interesting. However, if you are looking for a religion class that doesn't require a lot of work outside of class this is NOT the professor for you!! This class had the most work of all the religion classes I have taken!
I loved this class! There is a bit more work than you might be used to for a religion class, but I learned so much and didn't regret it. Brother Sweat is an inspirational teacher, and my appreciation for D&C is so much deeper because of this course. If you're willing to put in the work, I highly recommend it!
The best teacher at BYU. Period.
He's a fantastic teacher. He really cares about his students, even with such a large class. The only downfall is the consistent amount of homework (readings and quizzes for each class, weekly assignments, and a semester-long project). I would definitely recommend his class.
I LOVED Brother Sweat as a teacher!! He is fun in class and his assignments arent hard at all. The only thing was the midterm and the final were hard because he had answers a through f "all of the above" "A and C" "B and D" which was annoying because makes you doubt yourself. Or names like "Wilson Law" or "William Law" as both answers.
Dr. Sweat is an amazing professor and really knows how to approach difficult topics in church history. You can tell that he loves the gospel and wants to help you learn more and build your testimony. His lectures are really well prepared and if you take notes on his slides, you'll be ready for the tests!
Dr. Sweat is a great professor. He knows so many cool and interesting things about Church history and I always left his class excited to share what I had learned. There IS a lot assigned, but those assignments only become busy work if you stop caring about actually learning. If you're prepared, tests are fairly straightforward.
Best religion teacher I've ever had BYU. Amazing depth of knowledge. Really tries to help his students learn how to study the gospel in depth and not just take a backseat in religious education. Decent amount of reading but its all actually relevant. Tests are simple and have no surprises if you follow his study guides. He's also pretty funny.
I adore Brother Sweat. He gives amazing lectures that make you think and also laugh ridiculously hard. For sure there is work needed for this class to pass but it's fun to learn and definitely my favorite class that I've ever taken at BYU.
Best professor I've had at BYU. Really cares about his students. I'm taking all the classes I can from him. Very funny, but also spiritual and passionate about his lessons.
Professor Sweat is fantastic! He really knows his stuff when it comes to the Doctrine and Covenants. This class may seem like a lot of busy work but it is good busy work and it is easy and clear on what you have to do to get an A. Take Him!
Professor Sweat is great! He is extremely knowledgeable about church history and doctrine. He will help you to see church teachings and history in a new light. His class is extremely spiritual and I felt the Spirit each class. There is a good amount of work, but not too much. It is all useful material for deepening your understanding and testimony.
Professor Sweat knows a ton about church history. He is really entertaining and his lectures are engaging! However, he assigns a lot of readings for each class, usually about 2 hours worth, plus a weekly assignment, plus a semester long project (about 6-7 hours a week in total). The work load was equal to(or more) than my 3 credit classes.
He's awesome. Read all the other reviews. He cried like twice which I found refreshing because I'm sick of my religion profs crying every day. I was able to feel the Spirit without the tears. Lots of readings but they are interesting and there are questions on the exams about them. Great prof, great class.
What an AMAZING DUDE!!! He cares so much about his students and answers all questions with his best knowledge within the guidelines of the church. HE CALLS HIS WIFE HIS SWEATHEART, AHHHH, so cute!!! He is very family oriented and an amazing representative of the church! I highly recommend Bro. Sweat for all religion classes he may be teaching!
He is definitely one of my favorite religion professors. He is really passionate, and the lectures were super interesting. I actually wanted to come to class because I didn't want to miss anything he was teaching. He was VERY open about common questions about the church. It was so good. There was homework, but it was easy if you remember to do it.
Prof. Sweat is an amazing teacher! He perfectly blends an entertaining class and helping students feel the spirit. You have readings and a quiz due before every class, but those a pretty easy. You only have a midterm and a final and he is very clear about what you should know. He is extremely knowledgeable about Church history and is amazing!
Taking a class from Brother Sweat has been one of the best and most life-changing experiences of my entire life. You do quite a bit of reading outside of class, but it is all really good stuff and super relevant to what you learn. You will leave this class a better person. He is a GREAT lecturer and an A isn't that hard if you just listen in class.
Favorite religion class of all time! Seriously 10/10 recommend, that's all I need to say.
Very knowledgeable but isn't afraid to tell you if he doesn't know something. He has a disarming, friendly vibe and truly cares about the students. I totally recommend him for Foundations of the Restoration; he explains tricky things super well. No textbook, but there are readings (good ones) and a quiz before each class. Also: Don't procrastinate.
Professor Sweat is a great teacher. He explains difficult concepts well and has a friendly, laid back vibe. The tests are pretty easy if you go by the study guide he gives you. Do the readings and assignments faithfully and you'll get an A. You'll also learn a whole lot of col stuff.
Brother Sweat is an amazing teacher. All of his classes were so enlightening and he is so funny. I really learned so much. You have to take two pre-class quizzes every week which wasn't too bad. He is a very fair teacher and wants you to succeed. Would highly recommend Brother Sweat.
Brother Sweat is the best!!! His class is outlined so well, so I never felt like I had to guess at what was going to be on the tests. This way, I could focus on learning instead of worrying. He knows so much and I felt my testimony growing each and every class period. He was so kind and helpful. One of my favorite profs ever!
Professor Sweat is the only person I would recommend taking Foundations of the Restoration from. There are lots of readings and assignments, but they're really easy so long as you put the time into them. He keeps the exams super simple. His lectures were the highlight of my week. It's the only class I really looked forward to attending.
Amazing class, and fantastic teacher, but if you're looking for an easy religion class this isn't it. He's organized the class so it takes all of those "3 hours outside of class for every hour in". Every week there's 2 pre-class quizzes, 1 paper, and typically 1-2 hours working on your final project. I love the class and professor, not the workload
One of the best religion classes I've ever taken. His class is VERY well organized. You can see all assignments laid out on first day, he has clear expectations, and if you do the work you will get an A. Tests are very straightforward. He is a great teacher - great at addressing issues and clarifying church history. Other classes should take notes.
Professor Sweat is by far my favorite teacher so far in college. All of his lectures are extremely entertaining and informative. The class does require a bit of work but it's worth it.
Professor Sweat is probably one of my favorite teachers ever. He gives entertaining and informative lectures and is great at clarifying gospel principles. I felt like I learned something new every time I went to class. There is a fair amount of work, but nothing too crazy. As long as you go to lecture and do the homework, you'll pass the class.
Brother Sweat is phenomenal. He cares so much about his classes. He is always prepared, allows for lots of questions, and almost always covers all the material. The midterm exam was super easy, and he was thrilled at the high scores. A decent amount of weekly reading, but theyre relevant. I looked forward to lecture every time. Would take again!
Foundations of the Restoration teacher and he's amazing at it. I always learn something new each class. Super fun and knowledgeable. He's good at inviting the spirit and strengthening my testimony. Plus he's a gifted painter. I recommend him highly.
10/10. Take him. Take him. Take him. One of the three Nephites. Amazing. A true Gem. Wow. 12/10. Would. Take. Again. and again and again and again. I got a B in the class but only because I didn't work hard enough--It's really not that hard.
Loved this class, but it was a lot of work. I learned a lot about doctrines I previously wasn't clear on. He's a fun teacher and cares about his students. We had readings and a quiz due each class along with an assignment due each Saturday and a project we're supposed to work on throughout the semester. Don't let this scare you, just know its work.
This class is a lot of work, but so rewarding. Dr. Sweat is a phenomenal lecturer and the class content is interesting. The tests are very easy, but the class requires a lot more time than other religion classes. Your perspective will change because of this class.
Bro. Sweat is a wonderful and inspirational professor. I would take a class from him again for sure. This class is an easy A as long as you put in the work. Only 1 midterm which is nice. There are quizzes before each class which are easy to forget about, but they're only 3 points. Lectures were very enjoyable and I learned so much about the Church.
This is the best religion class I have taken so far and one of the best college courses I have ever taken. I loved the lectures. The assignments are not difficult but they do require about an hour or two each week. Beware the final project and study hard for the midterm and final exams, they can get very specific. Professor Sweat is amazing!
Brother Sweat is an absolutely incredible teacher. The reading & quizzes before each class are not bad. There is a big project at the end of the semester. He teaches clearly, meaning you know what you will be tested on, and what to take notes on. Stay on top of things and you will get a good grade. He is one of the best teachers I have had at BYU!
Best. Class. Ever. Brother Sweat presents the topics in the restoration very well--he sticks to doctrine, he is able to be lighthearted w/o being light minded, and his study guides are the test questions. Really good if you want a stronger testimony of Joseph Smith and the D&C. The restoration project is fun and seeing other's projects is awesome.
Brother Sweat is literally the best professor I've had at BYU. I learned so much in his class, and he really helped strengthen my testimony. I wish I could take this class every semester for the rest of my BYU career. He is such a caring man with a true love and passion for the gospel of Jesus Christ. He rocks!
Favorite teacher at BYU. He loves the gospel and has a super strong testimony, but doesnt sugar coat church history. In fact, he draws out things we are criticized for and helps us make sense of them. The coolest.
Best religion class I've ever taken. Bro. Sweat was super entertaining but also very spiritual. There was reading due before each class and a short paper due every week which was obnoxious but easy. 1 midterm he gives you the study guide for. Semester long project has to be 20+ hours but you pick what you do. I would take every class from him.
He's clear and straightforward. He teaches complicated or delicate Church History topics without fear or rationalizing and while he's not afraid to tell you if he doesn't know an answer, he'll also go and try to find it for you once you've asked. Fantastic class. Make sure you stay on top of the semester project though.
Fantastic. A model for religion classes. His class is very straight forward. You know what is going to be on the tests from the study guides and the assignments are clear. His lectures are really engaging. I learned so much about church history in a very engaging way.
Best religion professor I ever had. I feel like this is a better mission prep class than mission prep. The tests dont have much weight because you have one main project but you get to choose what you do for it so it is enjoyable. He is hilarious and really cares about his students. Really knows his stuff too.
Dr. Sweat is hands down one of the best professors at BYU. His lectures are engaging and comprehensive, tests are made to be extremely easy (the class average for his mid-term was a 95), and he connects with the students on a very individual level. Not only is it easy to pass, you actually learn interesting and helpful history and doctrine.
TAKE FOUNDATIONS FROM SWEAT. I can't say enough good things about Brother Sweat. His lectures are engaging, hilarious, and inspirational. I left class each day wanting to be a better person. He provides a unique perspective on the restoration, and is incredibly passionate about church history. 2 quizzes and a short assignment due each week.
LOVED THIS CLASS!!!! Got an A on the midterm and final. His midterm review that he gives are EXACTLY what you need to know for the tests which made life so much easier! He is very clear about what you need to know for tests and I loved going to class cause it was actually really interesting. He was so inspiring and Im sad I have to leave.
Overall I really enjoyed Brother Sweat's class. There is a 12 hour project throughout the semester, but it is not too difficult if you get going on it early on. He does give a solid 4 hours of homework each week and a two quizzes, but it is manageable.
I wouldn't take this class from anyone else. Professor Sweat was one of the best professors that I have ever had while at BYU. His lectures were very moving and inspirational, I never wanted to miss one. I learned so much and he was just great at explaining hard topics. As for the class, it was pretty easy, our average test grades were above 90%.
Hands down the BEST professor I have EVER had. I took Foundations of the Restoration from him, and it was the best decision I have ever made. That class is my all favorite class I have ever taken in my life. Brother Sweat is the best. He teaches with the strongest spirit, and he teaches tough concepts so well. I loved him and his class so much!
This class can seem like a lot of work at times, but each assignment is to your benefit so you can understand the material. Brother Sweat is an extremely knowledgeable professor who does all he can to help you succeed in his class. I learned a lot and wasn't terribly worried about the grade I was going to receive.
Best lectures I have ever attended at BYU. He is such an amazing professor and so caring and kind. He is a very fair grader, but has a lot of reading an a pretty important project. Very eye opening class. I LOVED it.
He is an awesomr guy and is super funny.
I literally cannot suggest this class enough. Brother Sweat's lectures are informative and entertaining, the class never felt long. A good amount of work, but his grading is easy. He tells you exactly what will be on the tests, so if you take notes you'll be fine. He's a great guy and I learned so much from this class! Favorite professor by far.
I have literally told everyone I know to take this class from Bro. Sweat because he is just THAT amazing of a teacher! He focuses on having assignments that are meaningful to your spiritual growth and applying the restoration to your own life. His tests are not difficult, as he gives a study guide that the questions come directly from.
Dr. Sweat cares a lot about his students. His lectures and personal touch are inspiring, especially considering I took Foundations of the Restoration online. He was generous with extra credit, but the end-term project was intense. You'll need to study and work in this class but if you're like me, the insights you gain will be life-changing.
The professor and the whole class thinks he's funny but he isn't sorry. Also the essence of this class if filling it with enough busy work to "legally" be a 2 credit class. This class takes more work than my regular 3 credit classes! Also, much of the content challenges my testimony more than it helps! Whole thing is weird. Regret taking.
Professor Sweat is the beat professor I have ever had. He is easy to work with and very inspiring! He makes me a better person! I almost cried when the semester ended and I couldnt be in foundations of the restoration anymore!
Dr. Sweat is awesome! He's a great teacher and is a wealth of knowledge. I took a blended online class which was nice because there was less class and you could go at your own pace. However, I felt like there was a lot more reading and writing with the blended course. Not hard but just a lot of work. Take this class from him!
BEST TEACHER! Don't take Foundations of Restoration from anyone else. Tests are fair, the only hard thing for me was the readings quizzes that were due the night before every class, cuz I always forgot. There are some sizable readings, but they're interesting, and you can skim if you need to. They're all online, so no textbook except the scriptures
Dr. Sweat is a good professor and a good Brother but he is not the most interesting man to listen to. Foundations of the Restoration is a class with a lot of memorization, and he did not do a great job of making it more than that. This is the first religion class I took that I did not feel spiritually uplifted in.
One of the best religion professors ever! I loved it so much that I went to all his lectures even though I was in the online version. There was a bit of homework, but it was interesting. The tests were also very easy.
Don't take Foundations of the Restoration from anyone else!! Bro Sweat is inordinately knowledgable, and his lectures are so inspiring. You learn SO MUCH. You'll have to remember a lot of information, but it's not difficult at all. Just stay on top of your work. Work on the project all throughout the semester; you'll regret procrastinating.
Everything you have heard about this class is true. I have never had a religion professor as good as Dr. Sweat. The class will still require work! There are a lot of little assignments and quizzes, along with a 12 hour project. It is totally worth it. You learn so much cool information and Dr. Sweat is really entertaining.
So fun! So interesting! So applicable! I even enjoyed doing the homework for this class because I got so much out of it. Felt the spirit all the time inside and outside of class.I would recommend this class to everyone
He's funny and relatable, while being respectable. You can tell that he is VERY educated on everything , but he doesn't sound condescending. He provides lots of resources (websites and books) that students can use to learn more. Advice: Take the Restoration Project seriously. I would've learned a lot more if I didn't do it all the weekend before.
Loved this class. I loved learning about the Restoration and many things that I didn't know about before taking his class. The only thing that was challenging for me was the project we have to do. I wrote a song which pushed my limits but I did it and I am really satisfied with the results. Highly recommend this class.
Professor Sweat's class was one of my favorite religion classes at BYU. It seriously gave me so much perspective on the restoration, and there is a solid amount of homework, but it's really just to help you learn; the tests aren't ridiculously hard or anything.
LOVED his class. He makes you put in a fair amount of effort but as long as you stay caught up on the semester project throughout the semester then you'll be totally fine. I felt inspired after each class. He loves taking questions and answers them in a faith building way, even when they're hard answers. I wouldn't have wanted any other teacher!
Dr. Sweat is super knowledgable about our Church history; there is a lot of reading at times with articles, videos, etc. But it is all fascinating for each period in context. He doesn't shy away from some of the harder things to address in our history, but he is awesome for doing so. Please take this class!!
BEST TEACHER EVER!! Oh my gosh seriously he was amazing. Every lecture I walked away feeling overwhelmed with cool info I didn't know and my mind was blown. He wasn't a hard grader and the homework was easy. Tests were literally word-for-word learning objectives he gave each class. 100% WOULD RECOMMEND! I can't look at church history the same! <3
Dr. Sweat is the man. Class is designed for you to learn and not for you to struggle, which feels appropriate for a religion course. You still need to study for the A, but he gives you all of the test questions beforehand.
The best religion professor in probably all BYU. A lot of reading but I looked forward to it which is a first. Study guides are essentially word for word as the exams. Very passionate and I wish every human being on this earth took this class.
Brother Sweat is extremely real. It was good to learn about the restoration from him because he knows his stuff and he's not afraid to shut down rumors. I learned a lot from him! You need to read a ton, but his tests are easy because he makes the best study guides.
TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!! Professor Sweat's lectures are so interesting and informative. I learned a mountain of stuff, but it wasn't very hard at all. The midterm's average was 95. Just pay attention and you'll get an A. The best professor I have ever met!
If your looking for a pleasant easy religion class, look elsewhere. Dr. Sweat makes you write a couple paragraph summaries for each section you reach, which can really add up on the longer reading assignments. There is also an 8 page paper you will have to write at the end of the semester.
Professor Sweat's class is incredibly well-organized. At the beginning of class, he lists the learning objectives for the day, and if you write down the answers to the objectives, they'll be the answers to the test questions. A large part of the grade comes from the Restoration project, which you get to choose yourself. Possibly my favorite class!
Professor Sweat gives great lectures. I actually really liked his class, but there is a lot of homework for a religion class. Also, to get an A in the class you need 95%, which is pretty nuts. I don't think I would take another class from him. I would rather just go to his lectures for kicks and giggles, without having to do the work.
I loved Professor Sweat's Foundation of the Restoration class. He did a great job answering tough questions and keeping the class uplifting. He is super funny and very relatable. He does require an Analysis Assignment every weekend which is hard cause ya know, due on a weekend, lol. Other than that it was a fairly easy class.
Professor Sweat is such a good dude. His tests are pretty easy (as shown by their high averages) and there were reading quizzes before every class, but they weren't hard. I learned so much about the restoration from his lectures, GO TO THEM!! Ideal religion class-- not too hard but learned a lot (and laughed along the way)
Prof! Sweat! Is! The! BEST! I cant stress how amazing his class was. The weekly assignments are not bad at all and the tests are a breeze if you do a little studying. He does such a good job at looking at Church history honestly but also through a lens of faith. Oh and he is absolutely hilarious.
There is a lot of homework for this religion class. I took Foundations of the Restoration, which was a good class, but just moved too fast and went over a lot of important topics very quickly. Bro. Sweat is very funny and knowledgeable so his lectures are great. There's a semester long project, daily quizzes, and weekly essay-type assignments.
Prof. Sweat is literally the best! He's SUPER funny, makes class spiritual and exciting, and is great at explaining church history concepts that most people avoid talking about. His class highlight of my week. Exams are super easy if you use the study guide he provides. Also, make sure to work consistently on project throughout the semester.
Take any religion class from Professor Sweat. He is incredible. Class lectures were engaging and Professor Sweat was great at explaining difficult topics about the restoration in a way that strengthened my testimony.
Professor Sweat is a phenomenal man. He is so cool and funny. He knows how to balance the light and the serious. I loved in Foundations how he didn't shy away from the less talked about subjects. He makes class enjoyable and really cares about each student. No high stakes tests and the restoration project is a lot of work but fun. Lots of readings.
Attendance is on your honor, but 100% you should go every day. At the beginning of class he shows bolded questions & answers them throughout the lectures & those are almost word for word on the tests. 1 midterm & 1 final, 1 big project but spread out & not difficult. Homework was not bad at all. 1 pre-class quiz each day & 1 bigger assignment/week.
Fascinating lectures. Occasionally gets caught up in stories and misses learning objective points but adapts his tests to this. The little stuff feels like a lot of work for not a lot of points but it adds up and doing the little stuff will save your grade. Everyone should take this class and everyone should take it from Brother Sweat!
Great professor. Learned a lot in his class that makes me a better person!
Sweat made me love religion class. He teaches with the Spirit and with humor (a great combo), and tests are very manageable as Sweat clearly gives us the test questions and answers in each lecture. This class is not stressful. The assignments are readings and a 12hr "restoration project" that is completed throughout the semester. Take this class!
Professor Sweat is awesome! I would highly recommend that you take a class from him- your life will be changed. He makes the Restoration so interesting and doesn't gloss over the difficult parts. He cares about us as students and helps us succeed. He gives a reasonable amount of work. Honestly, now no other religion professors compare.
Professor Sweat is amazing. I'm not exaggerating in the least when I say that he is the best professor that I have ever taken. He's hilarious and engaging, I looked forward to his class every time. He gives you all the information you need for tests directly- if you show up to class it's an easy A. I promise you won't regret taking his class!
Professor Sweat is a real gem. His enthusiasm for his students and the gospel shows through the way he teaches. He teaches doctrine that may somewhat be uncomfortable and turns it into a hunger to learn more. I look forward to his thoughts each day because they expand my mind.
For a religion class, I wouldn't recommend Sweat. A lot of work for a 2-credit course, and not worth coming to class as we never got through any of the material. Very difficult tests (he tests on historical dates!). Graded our final projects hard and had a high grade cutoff for an A. If you're looking for an easy A, don't take Sweat.
Hes not very open to feedback and thinks that he is the expert on issues that do not affect him/communities he is not a part of.
Professor Sweat is incredibly knowledgable about the Restoration. Tests aren't too bad as long as you've gone through the study guide. The semester long project is a fair amount of work, but he made it super straightforward. Very funny and a great teacher.
This is the best religion class I have ever taken. Professor Sweat is knowledgeable and is passionate about church history. I am so lucky to have signed up for his class. I recommend it and so does everyone else I know.
Best Religion Professor and class I've had at BYU. Knowledgeable, faithful, interesting, thought provoking, faith building, engaging, inspiring. I could go on and on. Brother Sweat is awesome! Content of class was so insightful!
Take this class! Brother Sweat is amazing. His approach to the subject is phenomenal. He tells things like they are. He'll show you the facts and allow you to come to your own conclusions. He's not afraid to admit when he doesn't know something. You will learn so much from his class. 10/10 would take his class again.
Honestly the best online course I've taken. By far. There is a lot of reading, but it is broken up nicely with videos and none of it is too challenging or excessive. The tests are straightforward and the material is handed to you if you do the reading. He knows his stuff, and passionate about church history and the gospel and you can feel it!!!
I loved Brother Sweat's class!! I learned so much and really felt the Spirit. The workload is manageable and you can get an A if you keep up with assignments. Even for an online class, I could tell Brother Sweat cares about his students and wants them to succeed. I 100% recommend taking a class from him!
sigh. why is that all religion classes have ridiculous amounts of work? Lots of reading and a project through the semester. Goes through study guides with you so tests are easy. Besides that, this class was engaging and Prof Sweat does his best to connect with students in an online format. It was good, but I wasn't "wowed".
I loved this class! I took it online where I was in charge of completing lessons by myself. Each lesson had about 3-4 understanding check quizes that were open note and super easy. One big project you learn about in the beginning of class, and a few exams. All in all super easy and helps you learn a lot!
Brother Sweat is an awesome prof! I had him for Foundations of the Restoration and LOVED IT! He's my favourite religion professor so far. A discussion post once a week, a few reading comprehension quizzes, two exams, and a project. Also definitely the most organized and well laid out class I have ever taken
Highly recommend Professor Sweat. His class is super interesting and he is very approachable. The on-demand class has a lot of reading, but it is very doable.
Brother Sweat is an outstanding scholar. I really enjoyed his class because his insights were well thought-out and really incredible. It's a tough class, though, especially for two credits. LOTS of homework and LOTS of reading. If you want an easy A, he's not your guy. Otherwise, go for it!
This class was completely online and the current week's assignments were not available ahead of time for any reason. If you are unable to complete things on time, and you tell in advance, he is somewhat flexible on due dates. I gave my TA six weeks advance for an absence and was still deducted for points because of this policy.
Dr. Sweat is one of the best religion professors I've had! He's super funny and super knowledgeable about church history. This course was set up in a very organized manner on Canvas and due dates and everything were very clear. I learned a lot and really enjoyed this class.
I loved this class! His class is well-organized on Canvas. The quizzes and tests reflect the readings, which is great. If you use the study guides to study for the exams, you will ace them. For the project, you can choose your subject. Professor Sweat is by far the best religion professor I've had at BYU!
Professor Sweat is an amazing scholar and incredibly knowledgable. Honestly wish I had him in-person, but his online course was very organized and the exams were very fair (go to his reviews). This class was a lot of work for a 2 credit (reading!), but it was worth it to have Sweat as a professor. He cares so much and loves his students!
Prof Sweat is one of my all time favorite professors. I did the course online and it was very organized. I really enjoyed how he taught, even though it was online he did connect videos for us to watch every unit. You can tell he really cares about the students. It is easy to get an A if you follow the directions for the assignments.
AMAZING. Best professor I've had. I would look forward to his class because I always left edified and uplifted. His love for the gospel is so transparent. He really knows how to connect with his students and make them laugh and feel comfortable. I had to study a little here and there and there were a few papers and one final project but an easy A.
Professor Sweat was awesome! Even though I took this class online, he always answered my emails that consisted of church questions with very thought-out responses. He seemed like he cared about every one of his students even with the online disconnect. This class has a lot of reading, but as long as you follow the test study guides, it's an easy A!
Be ready to read a lot! But its all about being ready for his amazing lectures. I honestly loved his classes and the way he taught. He loves what he teaches.! You will need to do this final project thing -a bit stressful, fun tho. I loved how he shows his arts in the classes and use them for lectures. Fun! Im following him on IG :) nice guy
I loved Professor Sweat! His class was the perfect mix of spiritually enriching and academically interesting. I learned so much from him and the workload wasn't bad at all.
Bro. Sweat was incredible. He has a reputation for being awesome, and he definitely lived up to it. Take from him if you can, it'll influence your thinking on the restoration a ton!
Brother Sweat is one of my favorite professors Ive ever had. I transferred into BYU already having done my REL225, but I really wanted to take a Sweat class. It was 100% worth it. He was amazing. His class probably has a little more work than the average religion class, but it was worth it
Solid Professor. He really does a fantastic job at analyzing and giving good insight. The class involves a lot of reading, but it isn't the fluffed reading that many courses may give. He also puts out great discussion questions that can be rather uncomfortable, but very uplifting.
Certainly the best religion class I've taken at BYU, despite half of it being online. Sweat tailors each lecture to the concerns/questions of the class, and I loved how we could just pick at his brain. The classwork wasn't heavy, and the tests weren't bad at all considering that he gave us the questions beforehand.
Brother Sweat is the best religion professor Ive ever had. He cares so much about his students and his main focus is building faith in Christ and the restoration. Homework takes about 4 hours each week, but its super straightforward. All the homework is your study guide for exams, and its not hard at all to get an A.
2 hours a week of work outside of class, but very easy and well defined tests and quizzes. Great and informative lectures.
Professor Sweat was a really cool professor. He is good at answering student questions and provides interesting insight about the church and church history. However, all of the learning was done by yourself, with class just used as a chance to discuss. This personally wasn't the most effective way for me to learn.
The class was online except when we attended once a week in person to review the last week's module. The modules were easy enough (make sure to copy&paste the learning goals as a study guide) but the in person class was my favorite. Prof. Sweat is a super cool guy--religion prof. and artist extraordinaire--and acted more like a friend than a prof.
This class was great! He was so good at covering tough material and making everything very engaging!!! I would take it again in a heartbeat!
Professor Sweat is an incredible person, professor, artist, and author! He is so passionate and knowledgeable about the Restoration, and makes hard concepts easy to understand and believe in. If you're worried about the blended format of the class, I think it's pretty perfect! It's very well organized.
This guy clearly thinks he teaches the most important class in the world, and his assignments are far too demanding for a religion class. I've hated it since week one, I would never recommend taking a class from him because he tries too much.
SOOO GOOD. Make sure to go to lectures and you will come out looking at the Restoration in a whole new way. He is super funny and you can tell he cares about you. Just do the homework every week and you will be fine. Spent about 3-4s a week and got a 97% in the class, which is the perfect about of work for a 2 credit religion class.
His class setup is terrible and he makes you use exam proctoring software. He obviously loves himself too much and thinks he's teaching the most important class you'll take. He has you read outside sources but half of them are his own papers. A little too biased for me, especially for a religion class.
TAKE ANY CLASS YOU CAN FROM PROFESSOR SWEAT!!!!! He is amazing and truly teaches in a way that personalizes the course to you! I felt like I could easily find personal applications in everything he taught us and he teaches so powerfully and with the Spirit! Great professor!
PROFESSOR SWEAT IS KNOWLEDGEABLE AND OBVIOUSLY WANTS ALL OF HIS STUDENTS TO SUCCEED. HE TRULY CARES ABOUT EACH ONE AND IT IS A GIFT HE HAS TO TAKE THE COURSE CONTENT AND INCREASE UNDERSTANDING AND INTEREST. IF I EVER HAD A QUESTION AND E-MAILED HIM, HE WOULD ALMOST IMMEDIATELY RESPOND. WHAT A GREAT AND TALENTED PROFESSOR WITH A GIFT TO TEACH.
Professor Sweat is literally the best. Religion classes can be a struggle but not this one. His test is literally the questions from the class, he is so funny so the class is super enjoyable. He is a good professor he only wants you to succeed. I try and take all my religion classes from him because he is literally the greatest!
I loved Professor Sweat! His lectures were extremely spiritual and I learned a lot, he's really great at explaining difficult topics. But the homework load for this class was ridiculous. On an average week I did more homework for this two credit class than any of my three credit classes.
This class was a very fun class, while it's difficult and you're expected to memorize random facts and points for the tests, the class was entertaining and fun and for once, was an easy, well-balanced blended class.
I took this class as a blended class and really enjoyed it. Only had to go to lecture once a week and the rest was on canvas. There was a lot of reading but it was doable and the grading criteria was very clear. His tests are pretty straightforward. He doesn't try to trick you which is nice. Overall I really enjoyed this class and recommend it!
If you take this class, get ready to use Canvas. This class had one live lecture and the rest of the week you are using canvas up to 4 hours each week. The class is super helpful but It's not as interactive as I would have hoped. Professor Sweat is a baller, really good and insightful teacher.
Dr. Sweat is a great man and professor! The Canvas course involves a lot of work outside of the class, but as long as you do a little every day, it isn't too bad. He respects his students, and overall, teaches very well. He's a great choice for the Restoration credit.
By far the best religion class, and class in general I have taken at byu. I sometimes struggle with some corny byu professors. This guy is the real deal. Extremely authoritative and factual. Pushes you to learn the gospel. Doesnt shy away from topics that are important to know about. Actually really funny too.
Amazing professor. He truly cares, gives amazing and interesting lectures, and is generally a great human being. As for coursework, there is quite a bit of reading before each class (ranging from 15 to 45 minutes), weekly 3-paragraph analysis assignments, and a "restoration project" that you get to decide most of. Simple and not difficult exams.
Favorite religion class I've taken at BYU! Prof. Sweat was funny and inspiring, taught about difficult/controversial subjects in an open and honest manner, and was respectful of students of all faiths and backgrounds. I learned a lot, it wasn't too much work, and he and the TAs were great at responding to my questions. Take this class from him!!
Sweat is a G, but there is wayyyyy too much homework for a 2 credit religion class. The lectures are great and informative and spiritual but you can find that with pretty much every religion teacher. He is definitely a smart guy though.
Professor Sweat is amazing!! I would recommend him to anyone. He provides a lot of insights that are inspiring and thought-provoking! I left class each day wishing that we had more time because I was that invested in what and how he was teaching. The work may seem daunting but trust me it isn't. As long as you do it you will get a great grade!
Professor Sweat is one of those people that when you finish talking with him, you leave feeling so good. He is kind-hearted, inspiring, and one of the funniest people I've ever met. Religion classes are usually pretty hit or miss, but anything with Sweat is a home run :)
The best religion class I have ever taken, and I am taking another religion class from him next semester. I learned so much in this class which improved my testimony exponentially. He even covers the history of the church that can be difficult to understand or hard to talk about. He does not sugar coat anything, but that is what makes us learn.
Easily my favorite professor so far. I looked forward to each of his classes. He's funny, smart, and makes the class very interesting. He shares a lot of great stories and isn't afraid to discuss hard topics. If there's something he doesn't know, he's honest and says he doesn't know. The homework isn't strenuous at all.
Professor Sweat is such a fun and caring person. He truly cares about his students and through his lectures, he shares his own experiences which makes it really engaging.
Professor Sweat is the best professor I've ever had at BYU. His lectures made me think about things in a way I haven't before and I felt very spiritually uplifted after every lecture. I looked forward to going to class which is very rare for me. He is such a great speaker but his assignments and tests aren't hard. He is the BEST!
I learned a ton in this class. Lots of reading and outside of class assignments but they were totally worth it. He has some trouble with pacing (feels like he's always playing catch-up) but he makes it to everything. Tons of great material and really made me think. Cares about answering questions fully. Doesn't sugar-coat difficult topics.
Sweat is the man! Loved learning about the restoration and feeling comfortable to talk about polygamy and other hot topics. Frequently felt spiritually enlightened as questions were answered with honest explanations. My testimony of the restoration really grew in this class. Great class!
Dr. Sweat is awesome! He explains things from Church history very well and in a nuanced way. He always took questions from the class and his lectures are phenomenal! Keep up with the work and go to class and you'll do great! I couldn't have asked for a better professor for this class.
I absolutely loved this class and Professor Sweat! I always left every class feeling uplifted and inspired. Professor Sweat was very clear, open, and respectful with difficult topics. He's also very funny and I loved the random tangents we'd sometimes go on. I learned a ton and my testimony about the Restoration really grew. Highly recommend!
This was an experimental course on the Doctrine and Covenants, and it was the best religion course I've ever taken. Dr. Sweat hits the balance between academic rigor and spiritual preparation. He has a background in both church history and seminary and institute, and unlike other professors, in the dept, he isn't obsessed with the esoteric.
Easier class than I think people say it is, really easy to succeed, just make sure you go to class and take notes. Lectures are absolutely incredible, every class you reluctantly leave just wanting more. He makes this class so fascinating and enjoyable and you will learn so much!
One of my absolute favorite professors. I simply loved the way he taught the material but also just as a person he is amazing. Super fun and engaging but also very inspirational and testimony building.
I love Brother Sweat! He handles objections well and keeps the Spirit in his teaching. The tests are easy, he gives you questions which make up the study guide. There's a big project, but it can be whatever you want it to be. Overall an easy, but inspiring class. I've learned so much about the Doctrine and Covenants and the semester isn't over!
Prof is great but there is so much hw every wk. Have to do disc. brds(rspnd&rply to 2 ppl), preclass quizes(based on readings/vids), analysis assignments(write bunch of paragraphs), attendance quizes, all on top of a midterm, final, and project. I wish knew about the workload before I took the class. Never have taken a religion class w so much wrk.
Very easy and he is a great teacher. Very knowledgeable and uplifting. The homework is fairly easy even thought there is a good amount of it.
If you want to spend countless hours on assignments, take a class from Sweat. He is a great professor, lectures are entertaining, but man, I spent so much time outside of class doing homework it was ridiculous. I felt like I would have been more invested spiritually if I didn't feel like this class was an absolute chore.
Lectures are amazing, you leave every class feeling uplifted and ready to serve the Lord. Homework was a bit excessive for a two credit class, so be prepared for that. It's not really hard homework, it just takes a while.
Second class I have taken from this professor. I've never felt the Holy Ghost more in any other person's religion class. I loved learning from him and he purely teaches doctrine. He does not put in his own opinion into religion. He also knows the scriptures well. And the final project was a lot of fun. He wants his students to learn.
This was a great class with amazing content and I learned a lot. Downside was the pre-class quizzes, discussion posts and weekly assignments that seemed to get harder further in the semester (long short answer questions). ALSO do not recommend because of the very long project (10+ hrs). In the end it was too much to keep up with
Def my fav class I've taken at BYU so far. Like ppl have said, its a lot of work for a 2 credit class but dont let that discourage you. Its not hard, just takes time to get used to the schedule. Im so glad I didn't drop it bc his lectures were AMAZING, hilarious yet so inspirational at the same time. Do not take REL225 from anyone else but Sweat.
BEST CLASS AT BYU! Anthony Sweat is the best professor and teaches the class amazingly. A lot people say it's a lot of work, but it's really not. It is really the same amount of work as any other religion class and is not hard at all. Your life will be changed by this class! Highly recommend, take it from Sweat!
I almost wish I could take Brother Sweat every semester. He is truly stellar. This has been one of the most meaningful religion classes I have ever taken at BYU. You will come out loving the Doctrine and Covenants and having a much more full and deepened understanding of who Jesus is. No midterm or final, just a declaration about the Lord:)
Intellectually and spiritually enlarging 1000% Hilarious too. He relates really well with culture/college life/church challenges. Is a very experienced&well read scholar & wants us to practice. Hw must have been worse in years past because his class is NOT hard. His passion for the gospel is captivating. He is SO kind and understanding :) 10/10
Amazing professor. He does give you a lot of readings for homework but it is very interesting and I learned a lot. He addresses all the hard topics that I hadn't heard much about before. Overall, the class is an easy A if you show up and listen.
Professor Sweat is awesome. He is the most dedicated religion professor I have had. He is a big Restoration scholar and has a passion for what he teaches. He is assignment and reading heavy but they are organized well and facilitate great understanding. I would take any class I could from him.
Professor Sweat is the best professor.
Dude... it's Anthony Sweat. Like THE Anthony Sweat. Of course you should take his class! This isn't a run-of-the-mill BYU religion professor, this is the real deal. - Super funny - You'll learn a ton - Very manageable course load - Pick your own topic for the final project - Get to tell everyone that you took Anthony Sweat's class
The content was inspiring and deeply relevant and helpful. The class structure was the best I've ever had. It is obvious that Professor Sweat cares deeply about his students and the things he is teaching. Everything about his class was intentional. None of it felt like busy work, and everything was geared towards learning and helping students.
A bit too much work for a religion class, but it was good
This class is amazing & I learned so much about the gospel in it! Yes it's sometimes a lot of work but it is all intentional and helps you learn so much more. You can really tell Professor Sweat loves the gospel and he isn't afraid to be real with his students. He is so passionate about the restoration and his excitement makes the class so good!
Best religion class ever!! I'm so glad I took Foundations of the Restoration from him. He handles hot topics straight on and the readings are interesting and enjoyable. Not too much work, and the tests are very straightforward. And I actually learned a lot!! So worth it.
Professor Sweat, he wrote the curriculum. He knows the stuff frontward and backward inside and out. His lectures are amazing, he often answers difficult questions with ease. Not only did he teach the content well but he taught us how to analyze the content for our selves well.
Dr. Sweat answers hard questions about it with without fear to speak the truth. This is how a religion class should be. Learned so much more than I thought I could learn. HW is not that bad tbh. It is a 30-40min video with quick quiz twice a week, a skill assignment (30min) once a week and the midterm final he basically says what will be on it.
He is sooo fantastic! The workload really isn't bad at all, and everything is super interesting and applicable. He is so knowledgeable but also very humble and teaches the way a religion class should be taught. Foundations of the Restoration was highest quality because of him and the way he taught and allowed the class to guide the discussion
As long as you do the pre-class assignments and take notes on the learning goals in class you'll be golden. The Saturday assignments really just make the final project so quick and easy. I loved this class so much Professor Sweat is amazing!
One of my favorite qualities of Prof Sweat (other than the fact that he is a very solid teacher overall), is he isn't afraid to discuss the controversial topics of the church. He is very knowledgable, and VERY respectful of his students. As someone who has difficult questions/doubts about the church, he was an awesome professor to take from.
He cares about the subject but majority of the learning is done outside of class. Can come off as a little arrogant. Really interesting class.
He's an awesome peacemaker about contentious or difficult history topics. He loves his students and helping them seek God. His lectures are engaging. He opens discussion and answers questions, which you will learn to appreciate so much! The tests, prep work, and quizzes are really easy and help you learn more about church history. Highly recommend.
You will get out of this class what you put into it. In-class time is spent discussing what you read about for homework. If you have questions about Church history or concepts, this class is a great time to bring them up and have them cleared up. Tests are not difficult so long as you are prepared, and assignments are informative and interesting.
Brother Sweat is amazing! There are very clear learning outcomes for tests. Weekly assignments are used for the final project, making it a breeze! He is very good at making it clear what is doctrine, and what is not. Great religion class with reasonable expectations.
Best religion professor I've had at BYU. Lectures were so worthit, even though the class was big, 250+ students. Knows his stuff, teaches important skills for navigating faith challenges, and good knowledge on church history. Answers all the questions I've heard from people about the church, even hard ones.
Awesome class. Learned a lot and he is super funny. Also very straightforward and easy.
It was a great class and I DEFINITELY learned a ton about church history. That being said, sometimes we got into a little too much deep doctrine. Just wish this class had been a little more spiritual and focused on helping our personal conversion. But other than that he's a great professor! He has some cool paintings and is pretty funny
Foundations of the Restoration was one of the best religion classes I have taken at BYU. It stretches you but it is not too hard, and you will learn such important faith-building skills.
I would take every religion class from Dr. Sweat if I could. His flexible teaching style keeps everyone engaged and involved. You read 10 chapters of D&C each week but he breaks it up (different from his other religion classes). Each weekly assignment is in preparation for the final projects and make them so much easier to do. No exams!!!
Professor Sweat is a great guy and you learn a ton from him and feel the spirit everyday in his class. One thing I wish he did differently was try to learn our names. I felt like I was just another student to him at times.
Professor Sweat makes this religion class a breeze. The assignments are manageable, and the tests are straightforward. His lectures are engaging, and he encourages discussion. I found unstuckstudy AI super helpful for prep, alongside the provided resources.
BE WARNED— I took this class before finishing my other religion classes and felt like I did myself a disservice, because none of them can possibly compare to this man and class. He is amazing. There are very few people in the world blessed with the gift of teaching to the extent Professor Sweat has. Hands down, worth every second.
Since is was univ, it was a super easy class. Usually you read 1 talk before class then talk about it together. He is super funny and caring. He tries to personally connect with each student and is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. Even though the course material was sometimes boring it was always a great class! He is the absolute best!
Dr Sweat is so incredible. He teaches church history in an incredibly nuanced and faithful way. He doesn't shy away from bad parts of our history (priesthood ban, mountain meadows massacre). He teaches you how to work through your questions thoroughly and faithfully. He strengthened my testimony and gave me skills to move through future questions.
He knows what he's talking about! He has spent so long studying and learning that his lectures are super interesting. Asking him questions is always awesome!
The man needs no introduction, his name proceeds him. Best decision I made was to take UNIV 101 from him, the class only has 20 people so you get to know him personally. He took us all to his house and we ate tacos that his wife made. HIs passion for education is unparalleled and he is there to help you with literally anything.
He was probably my favorite religion professor so far. Super good teacher and lecturer. His assignments were manageable, but also more time consuming than my other religion classes.
Not the easiest Foundations of the Restoration class, but his lectures are fascinating, funny, and really well researched.
I absolutely loved Professor Anthony's class! He is extremely funny and caring. Definitely take it from him!
