Teacher is boring. The only thing that is worth going to class for is the attendance sheet. This teacher lectures the WHOLE time. No homework only tests. And the tests are very hard.
I new this guy looked very familiar! If you rent any Ultimate fighting Championship videos from 1995-1999 he was in it!!! In 1996 he was ranked 4th in the world. He kicked the**** out of some African guy but then later got disqualified for punching a referee. Was he a geology teacher back then??

Dr. Oleinik was fascinating. He has traveled the world and applies his knowledge to the lectures. I am not a science person and I did great in his class. Be prepared to learn.
He is boring but to me the subject is. you do not need to go to class b/c he give the lecture outlines online. he gives quizzes and he passes around the attendance sheet so you can get bonus points at the end of the semester which helps out alot
Easy science class and very interesting!!
Good teach w/lots of EXTRA credit....easy class easy A
Good teacher, easy class, just show up and follow the outlines he gives and its an easy A
memorize the outline
he's funny. and he's easy-going. i would talk and pass notes, he didn't really care. you really do need to study. but he's a good teacher.
tests are hard
Rediculously boring class. Really hard to study for. Failed to tests and still managed to get a B+...he gives a lot of extra credit.
Very boring. Stay away from this class test are extremely hard
this class was so difficult and trust me-coming from a 3.6 GPA...dont take him. strong accent, doesnt care if u learn, tests r HARD-quizzes replace ur lowest grade but he states them in ways u cant even understand the question, no extra credit available, hes not even interested in teaching, no communication skills what so ever. Pick another pro!
This class is CAKEWORK!!! I seriously don't know what they're talking about. Everyone takes the in class quizes together, and his exams are super easy because he gives a great study guide. Okay, so the lectures are a little boring, but he has a great sense of humor, and the videos are awesome. I highly recommend this class, this guy is awesome!
This guy has some amazing stories and been to some cool places all over the world! Wouldn't you rather learn from someone with such experiences than some tired old prof. who has never left campus? He gives a great study guide and all quizes come straight from lectures-your paying for them-show up-and you'll do fine. I'm a B student, got an A here.
do not take this class!! not only is he boring you can hardly understand him. his tests are impossible to study for... the study guides are sooooooooo long & he only ends up putting 30 quest. on it. everyone failed or cheated on the tests. worst class EVER.
I'm a good student... but is STILL dont know where his test questions come from!!! The questions are on specific things you would never think of studying!! Oh... and the in class quizzes are hard too. people "work together" because they cheat.
okay the class is a lil hard, but professor olenik hooks u up, always attend class cause he passes out attendance sheets randomly which are 20 xtra points, quizzes help cause its a group effort, exams are tough, but grades on a curve in the end, not that bad
very interesting teacher.he is very smart and knows everything there is to know about geology.one can ask him anything about geology and he will answer before you even have finished the question.great sense of humor as well, jus make sure ur cell phones are off!
He is a nice guy, not strict with behavior or anything. I thought the class was so much harder than it really was. His class is kind of boring because he talks in a monotonous voice but he reviews before every exam, does SOOO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT.... and hands out outlines that pretty much have everything you need to know. GOOD CORE-CLASS!
He is a good guy. The class information is not the easiest but he gives so much extra credit and helps you out SO much! I would definitely suggest taking him.
Very helpful teacher who is nice to you as long as you dont talk in class or let your cell phone go off. Lectures and material may be a bit boring but as long as you attend lectures and go over the lecture notes before each test you will be fine.
He is a fair professor, he has interesting subjects, he's experienced things firsthand and he is occasionally even funny!! People who don't like his classes seriously won't be in school very long because this is as easy as it gets!!
Interisting topic. Very helpful, but difficult subject. Turn cell phones on silent
He gives tons of extra credit if you show up and do ok on the quizzes. I'm science deficient and I passed (which says A LOT). The subject is very hard and I didn't get anything out of the lectures except attendance points. Studying for the tests is hard because you never really know what will be on there. Extra credit makes up for it, though.
SO MUCH EXTRA CREDIT!!! difficult subject, but as long as you study hard for the tests you will be OK. He gives out outlines for each lecture...can get any better than that.
He talks alot and has a monotone voice
good teacher, knows the subject, lots of inclass quizes that are easy, pretty easy tests if you study overall intersting class
If you are the kind of student that likes to go to class, take alot of notes, and read the material before every session then this is the class for you. EVERYONE ELSE PLEASE AVOID THIS CLASS. tests are diffcult, teacher is good but the subject is more interesting to him then it will ever be to you. Just go to class and review material religiously!!!
The class is so boring!!! He lectures in a monotone voice and it's not interesting at all. He gives A LOT of extra credit though and the test are straightforward. All his notes are online but still go to class cause that's worth attendance points too.
Boring class. didnt realize how much work would have to be put into the class. Still should do well because he has a big curve at the end (or so he says) If you do well on quizzes it helps a lot because he counts them as bonus points on the test. Pay attention in class and read outlines, all online. bonus questions are on the tests too.
History of Earth&Life: required memorization of his POSTED notes; harder than I expected b/c vocab has hard to remember words.Gives out raNDom attendance sheets if you dont miss more than 3 you get +20 on ur final grade. BIG CURVE at end as long as not too many Cell phones went off during da semester... i should have got a B, curve gave me an A-!
If you are good at 1) Taking Notes 2) Memorizing very ambiguous words and DATES and diagrams 3) have a long attention span, than congrats! You will survive this class! He's often out of town just before test, TA's give videos. tests hard/quizes easy (xtra credit) & a big curve @ the end. Attendence helps, and TURN OFF PHONES!!!! Book not necessary
The subject matter is painfully boring and the lectures have taught me to sleep with my eyes open. Its kind of sad because you can tell Geology means the world to him. However, there is a big curve at the end and he gives a lot of extra credit. Just go to class regularly and pretend to care and you should get an A or B at the end of the semester.
He's a nice guy but if you wanna be bored to death, then this is the class to take. He talks in a monotone voice so 1/2 the kids are alseep. The outlines he posts up are ridiculous. They're 7 pages or more with the craziest vocab list, and only 1/4 of it is on the exam! but in the end he curves, thank god, b/c that's how I passed.
If you attend class regularly, you get 20 extra pts, which are a huge help. If you don't I'd reccomend doing good on the extra credit quizzes. Memorize his huge reviews and you should be good. If you go to class, he'll never say anything about sleeping, just go for attendance. Barely use textbook, maybe for a few definitions on study guide.
Class is soooooo boring! Tests are hard, attendence is not mandatory but he takes random attendence from time to time. Extra credit tests are important. Overall, material is just not interesting and neither is he.
Cool movies, some boring information, but overall a fun cool class. Easy to get good grades if you pay attention during lectures and study what is on the study guides
A science class that involves a lot of information so be ready to pay attention, do your studying and you will be fine. If you don't pay attention, you will not do well. He offers help whenever needed and answers emails, questions, even gives us the opportunity to make up test questions. If you don't like geology, then don't take this class.
This is a great professor for people who like science and want to learn more, but are not geniuses. I wouldn't recommend skipping class (for the attendance points) and he usually plays some cool movies that actually teach the material. His study guides are great, just don't try to do a midnight cram session before the tests. Too much information.
In Stratigraphy and Sedimentation he is extremely had to follow and talks incredibly FAST! You may want to invest in a recorder. The labs are difficult but they will make you think comprehensively. You will LEARN A LOT but is very interesting!
I wish this wasn't an audi class. He tries to speak loud enough so everyone can here but this class is mainly apathetic freshman who are expecting an easy A. I like his teaching style & the videos he shows. He's very fair but don't expect to get away with skipping/sleeping - you'll hate yourself. I recommend & want to take again. :)
he has an accent. hes exttrreeemmeelyyy borrring! when you're bored u can actually entertain urself by counting how many people in the class are sleeping each day and compare and contrast your results. even THAT is more exciting than his lectures. come to class for the attendance points or have someone sign you in. his tests are damn near foreign
there is a BIG curve at the end of the semester. BUT DO NOT RELY ON THIS TO PASS!!! just do the best u can and let that be an aid to ur grade but if u slack off thinking thats gona save you, then you're screwed. here's a hint: the attendance and quiz points will be your main key points... ;)
Pros: tons of extra credit points. The class is out of 240 points, he gives out about 100+ free points. Cons: 90% of the class will be extremely boring, the other 10% are cool videos that he will show. I expect to receive an A even though I messed up on 2 tests. The extra credit really alleviate the pressure to try hard in the class.
This guy is useless.Attendance isnt mandatory, but the 20 extra points are worth it. But he makes sitting through a lecture impossible. Hes boring, doesnt use a microphone in a room of 300 kids. His quizs didnt even factor into my final grade, I only passed due to studying on my own, with a friend, as his lectures taught me nothing but how to sleep
I reccommend this teacher. The extra credit at the end brought be up from a C/D to an A! He may seem boring, but you can tell he loves what he teaches and has so many interesting stories! The movies are pretty cool, too. I think this is a great class and a great professor. Would definitely take again.
He was a decent professor, but it was hard to understand him. He's not used to a big lecture class, so he doesn't use a mic. Sit up front. His tests are crazy hard, make sure you memorize the study sheet he gives you. He's a nice guy, and you can go and talk to him about the class, but he definitely makes the class a challenge.
Boring class. The tests are hard.
This professor is completely useless. During his boring lectures you cannot understand a word he says. I asked for him to clarify the test material for me b/c the syllabus and the study guide said 2 different things and he very condescendingly replied saying to look at the syllabus and the study guide.
This class has its hard and easy parts. The tests can be difficult if you don't study. This is what i at least seemed to notice because i studied for the first test and got a B- but didn't study the second test and got a D-. The professor can be hard to understand at times with his accent but he gives easy quizzes and extra points for attendance.
Do not take this class if it is not required. I asked for help several times and was criticized for not understanding the lecture. I also studied hours for the test and never got above a C..the class is not interesting at all and it is difficult to understand him.
Do not take if it is not required! It's difficult, he is extremely boring, and very hard to understand because he lectures without using a mic in a class of 200 students. His tests are very hard, and don't even bother buying the textbook...
I didn't buy the book, don't bother. He doesn't even reference it. You have to take notes, and his PP aren't online. There is a LOOOOT of info. You have to study AND go to class. Try your best on the quizzes. I did horrible on all the tests, but because of the quizzes and attendance points I was able to pass. Interesting movies though.
I have taken all his classes and Dr. O is a great guy. For GLY2100 he is not thrilled to be teaching such a large class full of insolent freshman and he has to use a mic, but the tests are easy if you pay attention and watch the movies. For his upper level classes the tests are all essay format but he gives lots of partial credit. Don't skip class
I'm so mad that I don't even need this class anymore because I changed my major. But anyway, this class was hard. He gives a ton of info and outlines on BB but his lectures are fast, hard to take good notes, does not use a mic, 30 question tests (HARD). I passed because of his extra credit for attendance.. ATTEND CLASS!!!! Cool movies though.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! Worst class I have taken, this test are extremely hard even when you study. Doesn't even make it intersting. Attendence isn't mandatory but go go go you get extra credit. A lot of extra credit chances but there all very hard. If you do not need to take this class don't!
His class is like an outline of life, biology, geology, astronomy etc. Meaning, LOTS OF INFO. Yet his tests are 30 question tests. You must sit infront or else you can't hear him to take notes, his notes are fast, if you miss something oh well because he doesn't have it on blackboard. Attendance and quizzes are extra credit, only way to pass.
Dr. O is one of the best professors in the department. I would suggest not taking him if geology is not your major. Ive taken him for 2100 too, so I know. But GLY4500 is no joke. Especially if you thought 2100 was hard. And if you are a geo major, youll be seeing Dr. O quite often so get used to it. Guy is brilliant.
Professor Oleinik is very hard to understand. He has an accent and he refuses to use a microphone in a lecture hall. If you ask him questions, he isn't very helpful and gets mad that you don't understand his teaching. unless this class is required or you are just very interested, don't take it.
If you're a non major taking this class as a way to get out of a science credit, you're not going to be happy. Unless of course, you put away your laptop, cellphone, and ipad, and actually, you know, take notes.
The class is somstraightforward that the people who complain it's too hard are the people who print out the lecture outlines instead of taking actual shorthand notes. The bonus points he gives out throughout the semester make it easy for anyone to pass a test/the actual class. Just study and memorize, basic college class and rather average teacher.
Very easy class never show up for lectures or quizzes and got all As on tests. Just study lecture notes thoroughly (span of 1-2 days) and you will do good
We had four tests. All of them were very easy. He gives extra credit quizzes and you can drop your lowest test grade and replace it with your quiz grade if yo do well on the quizzes. Attendance really helps your grade. He is very nice ans gives out study guides. We watched all lot of movies, but we learn a lot of interesting stuff.
Really interesting class, wasn't too hard. Just study his "outlines" and you will pass the class.
I did not like this class nor did i like the teacher. His lectures are dry and makes you fall asleep. Even though i studied his outlines for the test, i still struggled. I would not recommend this class if you are not a geology major.
DONT BUY BOOK! It's useless and he doesn't address it once. I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone who isn't a geology major or isn't extremely understanding of sciences. I went to every class, studied for each test, went to the SI sessions but, still struggled. Dr. O is a nice guy though and provides a lot of bonus pts which really do help.
I went to every lecture and was completely bored out of my mind. I couldn't focus not once. The class is extremely dry and boring. Don't get the book either, you won't use it once. I've never failed a class and I struggled with this one.
He knows his stuff. Take plenty of notes. He offers lecture outlines which are VERY HELPFUL and exam study guides. I did well on his quizzes but not the exams. Pay close attention to the little details during his lectures.
Class is boring and dry but easy I went to class about 7 times the entire semester still got an A his exams are straight forward and easy don't understand the issue people have. Can't make it anymore straight forward then it already is.
Prof. Oleinik was a very passionate professor, and it is unfortunate that his ratings are so low on here. I received a 112% in his class because I was actually interested in the material and paid attention; took good notes every day. He is very thorough and detailed in his explanations and tells great fascinating stories of his fieldwork.
If you do not like Geology DO NOT take this class! Extremely boring. Attendance is not mandatory but he does do it randomly throughout the semester.
easy class, you really don't have to take notes cause he posts them online.
Avoid if possible guys. His lectures are so long and boring. I fell asleep the first day. I have never had such a hard time in my life trying to pass a class. No homework, nothing to really boost your grades. It all depends on the 4 tests you take. He is grumpy when you ask for help usually. If you do take him go to class for attendance points
Didn't enjoy this class as much as I thought I would. His lectures are long, hard to follow with confusing Powerpoints and videos and his tests are difficult. Make sure you go to class! Showing up to 75% of classes he takes attendance in will give you 20 additional points!
I absolutely loved this class. This class was more interesting than any other I've taken. He made lectures interesting, showed many movies, and was obviously passionate about teaching. He explains any questions you might have, goes over the answers to the extra credit quizzes right after you take them and removes your lowest test grade.
Long lectures! Your grade in this class is based upon 4 exams that are about 50 questions. he gives semi-pop quizzes that he will tell you about the class before. Attendance isn't mandatory but it helps. Powerpoint's aren't helpful and notes are on online. Pretty boring class if you aren't interested about the subject. DONT BUY THE TEXTBOOK!!!
Lectures are long, try not to miss them. If you attend more than 75% of them he gives 20 extra credit points which really helps. Quizzes are not hard & out of 5, each question is worth 2 pts, not hard & straight forward. Exams are hard though. You have 30 questions each worth 2 points. No other opportunity to get points. No hw. Attend lectures !
RUN THE OTHER WAY! If you are taking this class because you are generally interested in it, then you will be able to get by. But if you are taking it just as an elective or to satisfy a credit then DON'T! He makes an already boring subject BORING! Very monotone, one of the worst professors I have had! You can barely hear a word he is saying!
Dr. O is an incredible geologist! He has so much wisdom and knowledge to share. The people who think he is boring on here simply do not have an interest in the classes they are taking him for. Yes, his lectures can be long sometimes but he knows how to get the point across. Great professor!!
I absolutely loved History of Earth and Life! I learned so much, and I really loved how the professor would put on movies as a means of learning the information. I would take this class again.
You definitely have to work for it. He's incredibly intelligent and has seen and done it all and can tell he loves it. He's also hilarious if you're paying attention to what he says. I suggest a recorder because its hard to catch everything he says in class with his thick accent, but once you really listen, you realize he's an excellent professor.
The lectures are dry and boring, trying to stay focus and paying attention is nearly impossible for this class. One, he shuts off all the lights, making pitch black for the exception of the screen. Two, his accents impedes at times an understanding of the material. Three, the material is dry and test questions don't always match PP.
Make sure you pay attention to his lectures, all of the exams are based off of this. But his extra credit system is great, the quizzes don't count against you but for you. He is funny and very informative. His exams are only 30 questions so studying can be very intense. Don't skip class, pay attention, ASK QUESTIONS, and you will pass.
He dims the lights and has such a monotone voice I almost fell asleep every class. He is super sarcastic and will call you out for anything. He doesn't always take attendance but you should go to class because if you don't you will not do well. I went in to get help from him and he just told me to google it. He also scares me a little ngl.
Good Prof Posts everything online
Although he clearly knows what he's teaching you can barely hear what he's saying which makes it harder to take notes in class when you can't hear him even when he uses a microphone. The class itself isn't difficult. This class would be ten times better in a smaller class setting not in a lecture hall. Laptops and tablets are not allowed in class!
Professor Oleinik is a very entertaining and has great lectures. He made this class and the subject super interesting, I learned so much! Grade is based off of just 4 tests that are straight from his lecture notes he posts online. Attendance not mandatory, unless you want extra credit.
Absolutely wonderful professor. His accent is a little heavy, however not horrible. He makes a lot of stupid jokes, but it lightens up the very monotone mode of the course. Super test heavy, but extra credit on each exam. Although you dont need the book, I recommend it because it clarifies some topics. Would definitely take again!
Only in this class for 2 weeks before I dropped. Sat in the front of class and it was still hard to follow along because he just said the information without giving a lot of explanation. He dims the lights and it honestly makes it so much harder to stay awake :( His accent is thick, which is fine, but he's very cut and dry when it comes to material
Funny teacher, tries to make the information understandable even though its boring. I fell asleep almost every class even though I sat in the front row. Show up to every class and do the study guides and focus mainly on the vocab portion. If you all he grades are the 4 tests so if you do bad on those then you wont pass. Take the class seriously
Polite to all students and funny. Does not allow electronics in the classroom. Lectures are like collages, kind of confusing. Ask for help when needed! He will help you with every detail. Random quizzes and 30 questions tests (each non-comprehensive). Anything you ask that pertains to the class will be on the syllabus. It was hard, good luck!
If you get this professor....... drop the class ASAP. worst class ive ever taken, nearly failed. Only grades that go in are exams and 20 extra points if you attended 75% of his lectures. He is not helpful, monotone, etc. avoid him if possible.
If you have him, drop him. Boring class, besides the fact that the material is already very boring, he dims the lights in class and has a monotone voice. 4 exams, pop quizzes, and extra credit if your attendance is 75% or more even though I was never able to sit through a whole class from how boring it is.
He is extremely monotone. The subject itself is hard to grasp, but when you have a teacher that sounds like he hates his life, it makes it even worse.
This class is so boring I would 100% recommend taking anything else if possible. That being said he only has 6 tests 15 questions each and one 30 question final, you get extra credit for attending lectures which is the only reason I ended with a B because I couldn't pay attention, the material is boring and the professor is just as boring.
The material can be challenging, but if you ask for help Dr. Oleinik WILL HELP YOU! I used to ask him questions after the lectures and through email, and he always nice and answered my questions. My tips for you: Ask questions + Buy the book + Print the Lecture Outlines before the lectures + study the vocabulary + go to class & you will get an A+
This class is very hard, and the material can be very boring, but Dr. Oleinik gives you the study guides on Canva. Buy the book and printing the Lectures Outlines before the classes. I used to study the chapters ahead of time so I could understand the lectures, and that really helped me a lot. After I did that, I started getting 100 in every test.
Professor Oleinik is monotone and difficult to understand at times. He provides the class with well structured study guides and lecture outlines as well as 20 points for attendance. This professor values respect and discipline very highly. Although the class and professor can be difficult, any student who has a strong work ethic will get an A+.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. Most boring class ever, all lectures then tests. No work to make up for your bad grades on tests
Worst class I've ever taken. Lectures the entire hour and 20 minutes very fast and monotone, the "study guides" are not helpful at all. Lists only the term or thing but not what you need to know about it. Does not curve the tests or offer any extra credit, does even advise using the book.
If you go to class and actually pay attention you will do well. Dr. O gives you all the tools you need to pass (Including the book for free for extra reading material!) however it is up to you to study and ask questions. If you're looking for an easy A where you don't have to do anything then, this isn't for you.
Freshman and sophomores, take the other geology class.
This is definitely one of the worse experiences Ive ever had with a professor. The first day of class he screamed at someone at the top of his lungs. Hes extremely rude and condescending and does not want to see you succeed. first day we took a quiz he let about 30 students walk out after a quiz, he made fun of them once they were gone for leavin
I liked him as a person but his exams, are awful. 1 exam is probably 2 exams worth of information into one. If you are not good at memorization, do not take this class you will fail. If you are not ready to study and memorize a 20-page study guide, don't take the class. He also speaks half a sentence in English and the other half in jibberish.
I took 8 exams with only few days to study for each one!!!! He provides study guides and lecture videos for the exams but the videos are too long! I've probably spent hours watching these videos trying to take notes. And what's worst is that your grade will be based only on those exams, NOTHING ELSE! Idk what he's like in person but online ain't it
Honestly, if you want an easy class this is it. No homework at all, no discussions, only 8 quizzes each with 12 questions but its graded out of 10 questions so you have two extra credit questions every quiz. The quizzes are all multiple choice and as long as you watch the lectures and use the lecture outline for the quiz youll get an A easily.
Quite possibly the worst professor I have ever had in my life First off, the only way to get points in this class is by taking the quizzes or exams. No homework etc The lectures in class are horrific and the questions on the exams oh boy don't get me started there Just be prepared if you need to take this class because you will be in my prayers.
Your grade is based entirely on tests, but there is extra credit on every one. The tests are quick and if you prepare you will do okay. All of his lectures are prerecorded and all posted at once so it is up to you to stay on top of them. If you are not good at time management then the class is not for you. He is a nice man and cares for students
He's an amazing professor if you want to learn something I strongly recommend him. If you just want a grade don't waste your time take another class. He's extremely brilliant and cares if his students learn.
He is one of the nicest professors I have ever had. The weekly 'exams' (more like quizzes are pretty specific, just watch the lectures and take a few notes and you will do fine, if you don't you will fail them trust me. These are the only assignments we have.
This professors pre-recorded lectures are extremely long and takes hours to take notes on. He is extremely monotone and half of the time you cannot understand what he is saying. I suffered the loss of a loved one resulting in me missing an exam. After emailing the professor he told me that was definitely not a valid excuse. I would not recommend.
Only 12 exams, 15 minutes to answer 10 questions, & 2 extra credit ones, multiple-choice. Get in a gc! If you study or not you'll be fine guessing. Most questions are easy, most aren't in the lecture notes. Either way, you'll end up with a B tbh. Exams are once a week only for one day you can take them. Read his syllabus! Not easy, not horrible.
Prepare to study. Cannot wing that class
If you are going to understand the lecture and be able to decipher information on top with his thick accent then by all means. HE CAN MONITOR EVERYTHING YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE ON HIS CLASS CANVAS. The only good thing is that he has his own grading percentages besides canvas. I suggest if taking this class to try to get 17-19 score is a good score.
My god, if you wish to have any time outside of reading for this class, don't take it. 100+ pages a week of dense material, and while I understand it's a summer class, the amount of info you're supposed to be taking in makes it difficult to do anything but memorize. The material is interesting, but you can only take in so much at once.
Expect a mix of easy and tricky exams. Prerecorded lectures can be monotonous, but staying on top of them is key. Unstuck study helped me ace the quizzes and save time.
Prepare for quizzes that require a webcam and are highly invasive. Tests, even small quizzes, require you to explore your room with a camera.
Don't take this course if you don't have to. Your grade is based solely on exams, there is no other work. I found it really hard to keep your grade up when exams are the only thing that counts, especially when they cover so much material and only have 12 questions each exam. 15 minute exams, Lockdown browser and web cam are mandatory for all exams.
I took this full term in summer 2024. The only assignments to complete were weekly homework, which were rather time-intensive, especially towards the end of the semester. However, they are still an easy A. The final was the only challenging aspect.
