Very nice little guy. A little green and sometimes needs students' help w/ organizing the course, or w/ his English skills, but he'll do anything to help you w/ your work and really cares whether we do well or not. I recommend taking a course w/ him.

Pleasant, enthusiastic guy- an excellent prof. Extremely helpful and willing to give extra assistance on papers. Highly, highly recommend taking a course with him.
This prof is the worst I have ever had. He is rude and sometimes dont know what hes talking about. I would NOT recommend him for a course.
Very attractive :) And a very interesting course.
Cool course.
OMG! Stay away....you'll never be more confused over the simplest little things!
This was the worst teacher I have ever had. He is not helpfull at all. He dodged everyone's questions in class and only his examples are acceptable. He did try in the end but only after the average mark on the midterm was below 40 and many people dropped the course. Not a good experience at all!!
he doesn't know how to teach!!!!!!
Does not know how to teach. A suggestion would be to use text books that are actually available for purchase, instead of an entire class trying to make do with one single copy on reserve. Far too much photocoping, at least 45 min. after every lecture.
This prof was very hard to listen to, and hard to understand. He was rude and didn't respond to questions effectively. I do not recommend this course taught by anton. I usually do really well and this course was my worse one ever
Should establish more communication and interaction with the class and take into account students opinions and views even if they don't exactly resemble the ones he proclaims. It should also try to be more clear and respond to students questions effectively.
Unclear and confusing. Trying to take good notes in class was difficult because he went so fast and slides were hard to read sometimes. Few felt comfortable speaking up in class. It's hard to say what he was expecting from students. Kept adding things on, like readings and weird optional assignments
Nice guy and I learned a lot. A bit difficult to understand at first, but I soon had no problem. And he was helpful to me.
very hard to follow, would definately not recommend him to anyone. was rude at times, and like someone else said, he always critized students answers, only his own were correct. No room to speak your own opinions. wait to take the course with paul ripley!
This was one of the most interesting courses I have taken. I don't understand all the complaints. I had no problems following Anton Oleinik. I also found him helpful outside of class -- and I got an A.
He sucks, and I hate his guts...he brought my average down a crap load...LEARN HOW TO TEACH!!!! Please don't take a class with him ever!
Perfectly average course experience. At first Dr. Olenik is hard to follow, but it becomes easier as the semester goes on. There is alot of additional reading on top of the assigned text, that more often than not needs to be photocopied. Dr. Oleinik does pursue class involvement, which can be quite humerous and entertaining at times.
Oh come on he's not that bad. I think MUN is lucky to have an established author/scholar of 3 languages. The content is abstract but trivial. If you did crappy look to nowhere else except the mirror. He is hard to understand at first but dont be intimidated- it gets WAY easier as the days go by.
Good prof, very intelligent and interesting. For a couple of classes I had some problem with his accent, but now I LIKE it.
Maybe its not the prof, but this course is a MESS! Having it split between two profs that use different noted and move at fifferent speeds makes things difficult. On top of that, the lab section was unmetioned in the course discription, leaving me with no time to complete assignments in labs becuase i have another class at that time! For shame..
horrible teaching!
By far the worst Prof I've had in my entire University experience. He is horrible at teaching and he's not very understanding at all. Not a very nice Prof at all.
Is an okay lecturer but can be rather confusing at times. Also seems to get annoyed when students ask questions. He also goes through material really fast. In the lab sessions, he would go through procedures really quickly without explaining them to students. I wouldn't recommend him for this course.
NOT a good prof....I would even consider him being the worst prof I have ever had...he makes no attempt to speak english properly, is rude and distant when you go to see him about the course...and in class he uses terms that has nothing to do with the actual course... which makes it all the more difficult to understand..
worst.prof.ever. he was rude, unorganized and expected us to have tons of background knowledge and made us feel stupid when it was evident that we didn't. i was so excited about taking this course and i couldn't possibly be more disappointed with it.
HES HOT
Very rude, not helpful at all and hard to understand. He really needs to work on being more friendly and more concerned with his students.
the hardest course I ever took. He seemed to mark ok at the beginning, but he is impossible to understand. The material for this course was all over the place and there was never a clear objective for what the students in the class were expected to know. TOTAL STRESS
hardly enjoyable, but the course pays off
A Masters degree doesn't make someone a teacher - prime example
Talks to the board when teaching. Course was interesting but he needs to take a class on effective speaking. He talks to the board alot.
Instructive even if I don't always agree with his way of thinking
Hard work, yes, but you also learn a lot. Isn't that what we are here for? Good prof.
This Prof is very hard to understand and his lectures are very boring. For example, attendance is mandatory and yet only 15/40 ppl show up to class. He is very unclear on his expectations and most of my attention in class is spent trying to figure out what he is trying to say.
His topics and classes are interesting. He does have a bit of an accent but it's really easy to get used to. He is a good prof

Very disorganized course. I was really interested in his 'book of readings' which was the required text for the course, but I hated going to his classes. His requirements were very unclear and his exams were extremely broad. They were impossible to study for!
I've taken two courses with him. Why? because I believe in giving people a second chance. Even the second time around he was useless. He Still talks to the board, doesn't know how to speak proper english, gives Ridiculous tests, marks unfair...he's still useless. I would NOT reccommend him to ANYONE.
Why is the man still teaching??? He either needs to go back and learn how to be an effective teacher, or just quit.
Not bad, I learned interesting stuff
Yes, he is tough. But what are we here for? I learned quite a lot on the sociology and politics of terrorism. Very interesting instructor!
Hard to understand but, in my experience anyway, as long as you write down his notes and study them you can pull off an A.
Oh my god. I was thinking that my English was bad, try Oelinik you will see what is torture. The poor man doesn't know what is he talking about. The worst Prof in the Sociology department. Don't take his classes.
well, I learned a lot but only after putting a lot of efforts
the exam was rather hard, but it's not that impossible to get a B+ or an A
I liked his lectures
OMG! Avoid!
Very interesting lectures. Challenging course, but hard work definitely pays off in his class. Loved the course.
Not the best but nowhere near the worst either. Just go to class and study for the exams and you shouldn't have a problem with him.
This guy is absoltely ridiculous. He cannot speak English, has terrible grammar, and you can barely understand what he is saying in class. Worst prof I have EVER had. AVOID. Have no idea why he is teaching, he obviously hates it.
I didn't have particular problems with this prof
HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE Prof!! If you can avoid taking a class with him, do so at all costs (although if you're a major in Sociology you will have to take his methods class because it's a required course... just hope Ripley is correcting your work). He's rude and doesn't offer any help. I really hated going to class if he was teaching. So confusing!
a hard but fair grader!
whatever some say i like the chap!
I can understand that people don't enjoy him, but I loved him. He's such a random character to be at mun. The man is a scholar, and I know he's intense but his classes are worth it. He's really only hard to understand because he's so smart. If you just pay attention enough you can pick up on his points. Fair marker too. Give em a chance!
the problem is this class is so poorly organized, most everyone dislikes it.
well,it was not easy but at least one can learn useful skills(needed to apply to a grad program)
i liked this intro course
Would not recommend! Hard to understand at times, very uninteresting lectures! Almost seems somewhat awkward in front of class, Course seems like it would be much easier with a dif teacher! Gives lots of notes but they usually dont resemble the textbooks teachings at all..got good marks in the course but certainly no thanks to his teaching methods
Fair grader, made me think about about many new aspects of everyday experience
He tries very hard to make the lectures interesting but with the language barrier he is difficult to understand. He puts notes online but your best bet is to primarily study the textbook. His answers to questions are not very clear, but if you read the book his tests are easy. Fairly hard marker on essays.
Very hard to understand between his accent and unclear examples, he looks at the floor most of the time instead of the students. He is arrogant however His tests are fair but is a bit tougher on essays. I have been getting good marks consistently in this course but it has take A LOT of effort on my part and is too much for a 1000 level course.
This prof is terrible! I would definitely not recommend. He's hard to understand and he's very rude to people in the class when they come in late or leave early. The only reason I went to that class was because attendance was worth 10%. Hardest 10% to earn ever because of the language barrier. You're better off teaching yourself.
On balance, efforts I put in this class paid off
I like the idea of the continuity project - something one makes by his/her own hands.
avoid this teacher at all cost! he constantly paces back and forth and doesnt stand still, hard to concentrate, he also speaks broken english and pauses alot, it is a huge language barrier. overall not impressed with my experience with him as a prof. he goes through the slides too quick and talks to fast AVOID!
after the redesign the course makes much more sense compared with what I heard about it
Is a total genius in sociology and I respect him but clearly Dislikes teaching which is a shame. The research methods course is terribly designed and they don't lay out expectations for the continuity project very well at all. Easier marker than Ripley though. I don't find his English bad, Newfoundland folks might though.
You would think so many sociology students would be more understanding. This man is extremely smart, and I think it is mostly a cultural issue that makes him come across as a little "rude" when really he just expects University students to treat his course seriously. I think he is funny, did his best to make things interesting and was very helpful.
Seems like a very intelligent man, but does not seem to enjoy teaching. Always asks for class participation, but is very critical of responses, which of course doesn't exactly encourage students to want to respond in the first place. Term project is not clearly outlined, has a tendency to talk to the floor instead of the students.
Anton is very intelligent when it comes to Sociology however I don't think he enjoys teaching, especially when student's need help. A couple of times when students in my class asked him for help, he was very rude and in fact, laughed at them. Would not recommend.
He is a smart man but is very critical. If someone has the courage to speak up on something hell criticize so much no one wants to speak up at all. Sometimes he'll laugh at you or doesn't care if you ask for help. And it's very hard to understand him. He goes really fast and doesn't give clear explanations on anything.
if you look carefully at the timing of the most critical comments, you'll easily discover that they were written on the days of exams. hey, fellow sociology students, do you really want to be objective? now I doubt. as for me, it makes more sense just to get prepared
Anton certainly wasnt my favorite soci prof. There's a definite language barrier.. Although his english in lectures was good enough for me to understand, I found whenever anyone asked a question he didn't actually answer it properly, and could be condescending and rude. Only stays for an hour of lab. Grades hard. Pick Ripley if you possibly can.
some write here about his English. come on, guys, is Newfoundland accent easy to understand? a student in his class was doing a project on Newfoundland English - many were reluctant to speak about this topic
He talks too quietly to be able to understand what he's saying. Add to that the accent and it is really hard to know what's going on. I also agree with many others that say he is condescending and rude when people answer questions. I think it's arrogance, and personally he made me not want to participate in his class.
challenging? oh, yea. but if you take the course seriously, you'll pass. no give giveaways though
By far the worst prof I have ever had... Very unclear as to what he expects and incredibly rude to his students. He goes too fast and simply becomes annoyed when you ask him to slow down or if you ask for help. If you do not immediately understand the topic you are made to feel stupid. This is my second class with him and it will be my last.
I don't really understand some comments here. if you ask for help, you get it. I did - and on several occasions assistance was offered
Great prof, adds humour to his lectures to keep class engaged. Tries to provoke class discussions. Recommend to sit up front as he talks kind of soft
don't choose this prof unless completely necessary. He makes class so boring and its hard to understand him because of his thick accent. he also talks kinda quiet so if u wanna hear him you have to sit close to the front. he tries to make class funny but he ends up being the only one laughing
every lecture is boring, but if you don't show up you lose marks for attendance, and he does inclass assignements that you don't know about until youre in the lecture, so you need to k now whats going on and need to show up.
partly true about marks for class attendance, but it also helps get a better grade, at least in my case
Dr. Oleynik has gotten a bad rap. He values punctuality, work ethic and respect, and many of my peers do not. It's likely these people who are responsible for his negative reviews. His personal stories/examples were interesting and added depth to the concepts he was describing. His jokes are hilarious. He doesn't post notes online, so go to class.
Is extremely rude and cares little to tk not ally about his students. I found whenever a student had a problem or question he would look down on them. Hes intimidating and I will never take him again. Lectures are confusing as he puts unnecessary quotes in lectures that make little to no sense on the topic. Tests are difficult.
it looks like there are two camps: oleinik-haters and those who appreciate the prof. I am definitely in the latter camp
He's a good prof, punctual, somewhat opinionated, but he provides great examples, and many of them to convey the concepts. Always asks if anyone needs more clarification before moving on. Memorial University do not provide adequate lab facilities/computers/programs required to complete the weekly labs and assignments.
I really enjoyed Dr. Oleinik's lectures. He is very knowledgeable about sociology and gives good examples of the concepts. He does move quickly through slides so pay attention and just summarize as you go rather than try to write it all down. Overall, I really enjoyed the course, especially the research project.
Dr. Oleinik is rude and arrogant. No respect for students or faculty members. He should not be teaching at MUN. Go to Professor Ripley's class. 100 times better and a much more approachable person.
I was not looking forward to having him based on the reviews I read but he was not as bad as I expected. He can be a bit rude to students during lectures but he also seemed to want to make sure we all understood the material. His lectures aren't that bad, the material is just really boring. I had Paul for the labs though, which I would recommend.
He gives examples during class that are so hard to understand and they dont even really relate to the material. Hes lectures are just hard to follow but, if you tell him you dont understand something he will try to help you understand. His overall demeanor is just a big unapproachable though and hes picky about emails. I would probably avoid!
was in his lab. I'd say I found his explanations clear and helpful
It was quite a learning experience. I'd seriously question a bad rap created here
Dr. Oleinik is rude and arrogant. No respect for students or faculty members. He should not be teaching at MUN. He would be much happier doing research then teaching
has a good sense of humor. enjoyed his labs
The only saving grace in taking 3040/3041 in my experience was having Paul for the lab portion. Anton will attempt humor in class, but is condescending and dry. For the department to have him teaching a mandatory class is a disservice to students.
learned quite a few useful skills
Socio 3040/3041 is a heavy sociology course, Anton makes it worse. He is very unapproachable and is rude with students. He also has very high expectations of students and if you don't give him what he expects, he belittles you. I would recommend professor Ripley who is much more approachable and encouraging.
high requirements, but this is probably the most technical undergraduate course soc course offered at mun. helpful when asked
I had very low expectations as he has a lot of bad reviews however, I thought he was very funny and the material was extremely easy. I had him for both 3040 and 3041 and received high As on all assessments. I did not use the textbook and all material needed was learned in class so definitely attend all classes and take your own notes.
Not only did he send out the IP address of everyone in my lab slot, he laughs at us when we ask questions and is insanely rude towards students. We sent him a class email on how we felt and he said it was based on "Hearsay" instead of acknowledging it.
Hands down, worst prof I've ever experienced. I've attended three different universities over the course of my life, and Anton stands out as the worst professor I've had. He's cruel, arbitrary, mocks students, and doesn't understand qualitative methods. It's unfortunate that the methods course is required and he's the only one teaching at undergrad
at times, it requires efforts to learn the material, but those efforts pay off, at the end of the day
a tough yet fair grader
Not an easy course. Dr. Oleinik can be rude and makes fun of students' questions. A very tough grader with very unclear grading criteria. He is very fast paced and it's hard to keep up also he doesn't post lecture slideshows.
some comments here seem to be unfair. you get what you want to get provided that some efforts are put. i had very low expectations but ended up by being rather positive about my experience
Angry, hateful little person. Avoid at all costs.
