even if u cut urself accidently with a schick razor it wont be as painful as taking this class. He doesnt speak english and is very confusing.
Because of him I failed Calc and have to take it again..I could not understand a word he said and makes calc seem like brain surgery. would not recomment him to anyone!!!!!!!!!
He doesn't follow his curriculum. He doesn't like teaching from the textbook, but likes creating new ways of doing problems. Due to his accent, he is not very easy to follow and I don't recommend him to anyone.
I could understand his accent most of the time. He didn't follow the book, he didn't even like the book. He had is own way of doing things which was very inconvinient. You might want to avoid this guy.
Although his class is difficult, I was able to learn a lot. He tried to clarify everything.
I couldn't understand anything he said because of his accent. He goes way too fast and makes everything seem so confusing. After the first exam, I dropped his class and registered for the fallback calc I class.
Undoubtedly brilliant so he cannot teach simple concepts well. He doesn't seem to understand that not everyone can follow along after his explanations, which are unclear and complicated. Do not take Calculus 1 with him!
I agree with every other person who has reviewed323 thus far(calc III). Thick accent can be difficult to deal with.Expect quizzes 1-2 times/week. Tests are hard, but the final is considerably easier. Dont start math life at bing with him, you'll be jaded.
His tests and quizzes are not hard as long as you go to his lectures and understand the notes. His accent is understandable and he is very nice.
This man is a menace to freshman, all his class serves for is to make you scared ****less about bing math course and lower your gpa drastically. I got a 3 on the calc AP test and am a 3.5 student at bing and get a D in his class.Aviod him like the plague
Horrible professor teaching a horrible course. Rather than teaching relevant and important subjects, he explores areas that he finds interesting. He never attends TA meetings and doesn't care about the students because he has tenure.
Very nice guy. quizzes easy as long as you go to class, right from the notes. final is extremely easy.

As an asset to the field of mathematics, Schick is brilliant. However, he is a black stain on image of teaching. He needs to find a new job or give control of Calc I to someone else. I don't know why he is a professor...he has no teaching skills and he
The sale of his own textbook is nothing more than a cheap scam to make money. The book is very unclear just like the man. He knows too much for his own good and can't explain math very well.
this guy failed me and now i dropt out of school and i am currently working as a cashier at mcdonalds. rot in hell!
He has a horrible accent, he doesnt explain anything, he is a **** and i hope he gets fired
Horrible professor. Accent gets in the way of students comprehending his lectures. By him writing the text book, he says everything is self explanatory. Avoid schick n get brewster if u want a good calc grade.
1 word-- shmuck......avoid the class and take it somewhere else
Why can't we give Schick a 0??? He is THAT BAD!
worst teacher in all of binghamton. enough said.
This so called professor should not be teaching he should stick to his business of writing books. Avoid him, do anything you can to get Brewster. His accent and teaching skills get a big FAT ZERO. I'm beginning to regret coming to this college tnx to him
if you can take calc over the summer, shick is the worst teacher on the face of the planet, he needs to learn english before he even begins to teach a lecture hall full of students calculus
Hey man, I dont want to know about your blue ****. (even if it is for a statistics problem) You stink.
HIS CLASS IS NO GOOD. DON'T TAKE IT.
No Good. Dont take math with him. Evil teacher. Makes college Hell...what else to say but if he is here teaching math then whos ruling hell?
This is one funny a$$ mofo. He doesn't understand the concept of education and takes it out on everyone. His book is almost as unclear as he is. If you wanna laugh, walk into one of his lectures. If you wanna fail, take his class...
Easily the worst teacher on EARTH. I hate this man with a passion. He yells at people who come in late in a 400 person lecture hall. Impossible to understand unless you read math textbooks like novels. Talks just like his course pack...which is awful.
would you rather subject yourself to hannibal lechter, or take schick's class? at least hannibal would be done with you quickly. a semester with schick is like getting kicked in the **** with no warning. worst teacher on this or any other planet.
Very elegant accent. His teaching is not so horrible if you take the effort to understand him. i like his intergral jokes, hahah.
awful
i don't think there's a thing that can be said about this man that hasn't already. it is funny in lecture, realizing how little you can understand, but the joke's on you when you realize how little you've learned (= you fail...don't take this class!)
He is whack. What the hell is going on in that class? I think he's dirty.
Take my advice, don't take it
By far the toughest class, I've taken thus far. If you don't have to take Math 221 for your major, I recommend not taking it. The course is not designed to catter to non-majors. It's passable but it's not a class you will breeze through
You may remember Anton Schick, skippered Hitler's catamaran during WWII.
waste of time. textbook is written by him. Makes no sense. Heavy accent makes him hard to understand. Combine this with poor time for the class (8:30 AM) and you have the makings of failure.
worst professor in the entire school..heavy accent, goes too fast, thinks calc is fun and easy. IN order to pass u will have to get tutors and study excessively. Avoid schick like the plague!!
should learn to speak better english and not to use so many proofs
Worst teacher ever, calc is hard to begin with, having schick does not help, u cant understand him or his examples - DROP NOW
APPROACH WITH CAUTION! DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS "THING". BOO THIS MAN!!! HE DOES NOT DESERVE TO TEACH. TAKE CALCULUS AT BCC OR NASSAU COMMUNITY!
If you take it with him all I can say is good luck. This course demands much work. If you are an upper class student who's finally filling his/her math gen ed you will probably be able to handle it.Freshmen beware, it's a hard class for 1st or 2nd semster.
In my opinion, his accent wasn't bad at all. My main problem was, he spoke Math, not English. For the most part, I had no idea what was going on and I took Calculus before! My TA was also terrible. In this case, two negatives DO NOT make a positive.
I dropped his class after the first month. He doesn't know how to teach and he's hard to understand. His TAs are horrible and his tests are hard. DROP IT, don't even try to take calc with him. It's a waste of time. Try and take calc with Brin or Geoghegan
I got an A in his class. Look over the quiz questions and answers that he puts on the website before the test and you'll do fine.
Schick isn't such a bad guy. Calc isn't supposed to be easy and he does a pretty good job of teaching it.
I've never experienced so much stress until I came to Binghamton and taken Math 221 with this professor.
horrible teacher, beware
nasty course with schick...although he is a looker
Horrible teacher. if i had not taken calc in high school i def wouldve failed. hes nice in person though if you talk to him during his office hours. but don't count on class getting you through this course. get a tutor and a workbook. its AP Calc...
He sucks totally. Don't take him. I failed the course! I EVEN HAD A TUTOR! you can't understand him in class or the TA either. Go for Brewster (another calc teacher).
he seems stupid.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS u took AP calc in HS and did well. the final is worth a LOT n if u do bad on your other exams, u better work ur ass off for the final, freshman yr was hell and schick MAD IT WORSE! DONT EVER TAKE CALC 1 IN BING!
he can't speak english
He's reallly a cool guy. College is supposed to be hard. He teaches calc really percise. He's one of my favorites
Schick isn't terrible....he isn't great, but isn't terrible. His tests are a mix of fair and unfair questions but he curves the tests a lot. If you have to take the class then don't worry, he's not as bad as people say. If you don't have to take the class, i would stay away.
The guy is great, he TRIES to make the material as interesting as he can, he goes alittle faster than Brewster, but I never had a problem with that. He can talk english, I had no prob with his accent, just go to class and sit in the front of the room and you'll do fine.
He is the best teacher. Only fools don't like him because they fail the class and need some one to blame it on. This class only teaches the fundamentals of calculus so it shouldn't be that hard. For those of you say that he can't speak english, he speaks english beter than any one I know. He jus
had him for 8.30. he laughs at his own jokes a lot, and doesn't clarify his ideas.
He's horrible. He makes his final 40% of the grade and makes the test really hard. He completely turned me off to math which i was considering minoring. Stay away from this horrible teacher.
If you took calculus in high school, I suggest you bring your notes from that class. I believe that he is understandable, but, I don't think that he teaches well.
I recommend taking this course only if you had AP CALC in high school, otherwise it could be very confusing for those who haven't. The lectures are boring, but go to your recitations with your TA-that is what will get you through the course. His accent doesn't help, but makes the class entertaining.
magnificently terrible... :(
STAY AWAY!!!!!! if you don't want to get a F. This guy is horrible and has a great German accent! This is a Big Warning.
thick german accent, wrote his own book both of which make no sense whatsoever
"IT IS A BEAUTIFUL FUNCTION"RIGHT?East German-has way too much time on his hands.Stay away!!!Take another calc class if you CAN!!!!!!!!
excellent
One of the worst professor. I would suggest everyone not to take his class. Only he knows what he talks about during lecture.
made my first semester at binghamton a living nightmare / hell.... I had to study my ass off everyday...EVEN THEN...i had a 67 going into the final. it is enough to give you a nervous breakdown.... do not take this class. it will negatively affect your gpa for many years to come....

Absolutely terrible teacher. I was a grade ahead in math for most of grade/middle/high school, and I still got a D. I even went to TA's office hours and got outside help. He wrote his own book and did not do anything but read from it--both were unintelligible. This was my first semester at BU, and I almost had a nervous breakdown. Avoid him.
no words can describe the horror that is calc 1 with this man. Just get you therapist ready.
quit whining and welcome to college
Alright... give Schick a break. Hes funny, nice, and a bit of a hardass. But, if anyone took a look at the number of A's he gave out at the end of the semester, you can't really call the guy a tough grader. Anyone who teaches Intro. Math/Science is gonna get a bad rap- go by the upper-level ratings.
HORRIBLE!!! made my first year here like hell
He's a good teacher and a fair grader. You get what you put into the class. The non-book problems he gives makes you understand the material better, especially if you can get him to review them during class!
Unless you are a math genious like the one here that posted a positive comment, you will get a C or lower. You need to work your ass off for a B+ or higher. SO MANY KIDS FAILED THAT THEY NOW IMPLEMENTED A "SCREENING" EXAM...WHY DO THEY NEED THIS IF MANY KIDS PASS? When I took it 2 years ago, 9 out of my 13 friends got C- or lower. 2 got C+ and B
as a senior refleting back on my 4 years....math221 with schick was the hardest class i've ever taken in college
This guy is not normal. We are in Bing, not CALTECH, and we get a BING diploma. I do not recommend him at all, unless you do have only 1 or 2 classes taking, otherwise with a full schedule its not possible to swallow up all the material. His tests are very hard and tricky. I wanted practical examples in this class not **** theory all the time.
He gave out 17 A's in a class of about 60. Yes, he is demanding, but aside from liking to keep his students on their toes with constant quizzes and (unchecked) homework, there is nothing bad you can say about him. He is a walking textbook, but much clearer. And although he has an accent, his english is perfect. Perhaps it's this whole 8 AM thing...
The material is not difficult, but we cover a lot and we do not follow the book. So if you are not on top of things, then it becomes difficult to catch up. However, Schick provides detailed solutions to all the extra homework problems, of which there were about 207 covering all the material in the course. 20 Quizzes sucks, but its only 15%.
I struggled with the class, but mostly because I took more classes than I could handle. People get the wrong impression of Schick - he's not evil and his accent isn't bad at all. He knows his stuff. He just expects you to know your stuff and do your work. If you put a lot of time into the class and he sees it you'll get the grade you deserve.
He is a very good teacher. The Material is very interesting but at times difficult; however, the tests are basic and relatively easy. The one quiz a week keeps you studying every week and in the end it really pays off.
Schick is a good teacher that just tries to come off as a hard ass. He is fairly demanding, sometimes even funny, but if you do the practice problems and pay attention in class you should be fine.
Tests are extremely easy, just go to lecture and do the work.
Great teacher, tests are easy, grading is more than fair - very difficult to fail if you do the work, in fact about 50 percent of the class received a B or better.
gave his daughter an A...what a surprise.
His Daughter and Son got A's in all their math classes, they just know how to study. So did half of the class, almost everyone passed
Very nice man. Gave the class a huge curve. About half the class got a B or better. Provides about two quizzes a week which are based on homework which he posts the solution to. Basically if you keep track in studying you'll do fine.
GREAT PROFESSOR. THE TEST ARE PRETTY EASY IF YOU HAVE DONE ALL THE BASIC PROBLWMS IN THE HOMEWORK. NICE AND EFFICIENT PERSON. YOU CAN GET THE GRADE IN ONE TO TWO DAYS. HE IS HELPFUL AND ALWAYS IN THE OFFICE TO WAIT FOR YOUR QUESTIONS. TRY TO COMMUNICATE WITH HIM MORE AND YOU WILL FIND PROBABILITY IS REALLY INTERESTING STUFF.
Professor Schick is one of the best teachers in the math department and here at the university. Don't listen to crap by the Calc students. The upper level students will really appreciate his clarity, sense of humor and love of the subject.
Professor is adorable the way he is so enthusiastic. You can tell he loves math and loves teaching. Bit of an accent but really good at making you understand everything as you go. Classes can seem hard but are not bad as long as you keep up.
Schick is very interested and excited about teaching the subject. He will always help you out in office hours and the final grades were pretty generous. The material is hard to grasp at first, but with practice things make sense. I could see how for lower level classes he would not be good, but for upper level he has been great in 447 and 448.
Schick was a fun teacher, was clear in his explanations and went through all of the material we needed to know. Overall enjoyed taking calc with him, even if it was at 8am. All of these ratings on here are entirely subjective, but I think he's a fun, interesting teacher. Go talk to him if you're interested in a class he's teaching.
If you are a freshman stay away from this class, take it during the summer at a community college. My biggest regret of college was that I took his calc class 1st semester freshman year. He is very hard to understand, extremely unhelpful and often mocked questions that were asked. He wrote the book for the class, which is written for math majors.
There's no mercy with his classes. 80% of my time is devoted to his one class. Majority of the class lacks real world applicability and is heavy on theory. I haven't learned anything that I could take into the real world and use. His office hours don't do jack as he will not answer anything and is very degrading towards people with questions
Worst teacher ever in my four years of binghamton. Does not record zoom lectures. Posts incomprehensible notes on his website. Pop quizzes every week after unengaging lectures. Stay far far away
Professor Schick is a really good teacher, funny and nice. He is really good at explaining topics. The exam is reasonable. He is also very helpful outside the class. He will help you out during his office hours. If he lets you solve problems on his blackboard, instead of directly telling you the answers, it means he wants you to learn something.
Dr. Schick is incredibly tough, but if you survive his class you will be great at statistics. Go to office hours and do the practice problems. He definitely isn't looking to fail people, but he's heavy with the red pen. He cares a lot about the material. Only take this if you really want to learn- you will struggle.
I would really recommend taking Professor Schick's class if you are interested in statistics. He doesn't make the class too easy and you will learn so much. He is really passionate about the material and will help you with everything you need in office hours.
Professor Schick is the toughest teacher I've ever had, but also the best. He is incredibly smart and effective at explaining complex topics. He pushes you hard with homework and tests, but you learn so much as a result. He inspired me to pursue more statistics!
Schick is easily the best professor in the math department. His class is challenging and homework assignments are difficult, however his office hours are super helpful, and he is very generous to students that show effort. While there are a bunch of pop quizzes, they are basically easy practice problems of material covered the class prior.
Professor Schick is enthusiastic about the material, though his class can be challenging. With diligent practice and use of resources like Unstuck AI, you can learn a lot and potentially get a good grade.
