Very nice, but can't lecture to save her life.
She knows what she's talking about, and is an easy marker, but she's very flaky
Her notes are tough to follow
Her tests are fill in the blank and she gives all the essay questions for finals
Really nice and helpful, a little scatterbrained but knows what she's talking about. Notes on board, but not full sentences so easy to lose track sometimes.
Prof Holden is by far the best all around professor I have had in my university career. Her approachable attitude, and knowledge of the subject is incredible. Thank you for impacting my learning process dramatically!!!
Very nice person but a scatterbrain for sure. She is all over the place with her lectures, but the class is pretty easy because she gives you the essay questions for the tests. Also no end of term essay, which is a bonus.
with the amount of work she does for this university, I think it's shamefull she's not a full-time prof. Brilliant scholar and cares about her students' learning processes. It would be insane to miss out on her classes.
very easy class, she gives you the exam and mid-term essay questions before hand, and then on top of that she tells you what vocabulary to study for the fill in the blank part...not a lot of work, only downside is her notes are a bit unclear
Pathetic, all over the place, knows her stuff but does not present it well. Exam are given to you in advance but are complicated. Should lecture at graduate level...waste of time
If it's your first time in her class, it's very confusing to figure truly understand her teaching style; she's all over the place in her lectures. On the bright side, her exams are really fair and easy
She knows her stuff - it's just too bad she chooses to write unclear notes on the board for students to copy, instead of lecturing. For a 3rd year class I'm disapointed. On the plus side: no mid-term or final exam (so basically, no need to go to class.
Don't take a class with her unless you have to. She is probably the worst prof I've ever had. Her notes are very scattered, and she digresses SO much. Every word I write in that class makes me hate her THAT MUCH MORE.
Very nice lady, the kind of person you'd like to go to dinner with, but not such a great teacher. She doesn't seem to really know how to teach. Class consists of copying notes off the board. On the flip, exams are easy b/c she gives everything in advance, but you don't learn anything.
I've never taken a classics/art history class before and inspite of the fact that I was slightly confused at times, she really made me interested in the topic and the history behind it. Yes, the note taking a torture, but the super easy midterm and final make up for it!
Her classes are some of the easiest i've ever taken, and everyone is able to do well in this class if u study for the final and midterm, which are super easy, as all material on the tests is given out before the exams. Good Prof, but her notes are kinda all over the place.
i hated the class i had with her. I found her to be extremely unorganized. She jsut wrote all her notes on the board, waited for us to finsih and then stated all over again. Its like she knows so much information that she doesn't know what to do with it, and so the student doesn't learn anything.
Does not lecture!!! Writes incoherant notes on the board. The course requirement was 2 papers that had nothing to do with the "lecture" material. If you can research and write well you can skip the classes and still earn an A.
Incoherent.
If you want to copy notes all class, she's the prof for you. No real lecture material, only overhead notes. She's not very helpful and she picks favourites, which is made very obvious. Thumbs down!
Her lectures are boring, but clear. You'll know exactly what she expects on tests, because she'll give you a list of what you should know. You'll just be copying notes from the board the whole time, but you should learn a fair amount.
She is very scatterbrained but very smart and friendly. Her lectures are boring and most of the time incoherent and often goes off on random tangents. First midterm is extremely hard, but second one is much better. I loved her art history, but hated Roman civilizations. Not a bad teacher once you get used to her style.
She's a good prof. she' goes of on tangents some times but they are interesting none the less. She's clear and highlights everything on the exams and they are really easy.
Great prof. Her lectures are interesting and her exams are easy. She does go on tangents but they are related to the course. Fun and willing to lend a hand if you have any questions. HIGHLY recommend.
A little scatter-brained, but she keeps so much i nthere I don't blame her. Excellent!
She's ALL over the place! And the material would be interesting but she makes it boring. On the bright side, she's an easy marker
She does go on tangents, but only because she has so much to say and not enough time to say it! They tend to be interesting none the less and she ensures that the exam is clear. It is an easy class and I recomend it to anyone who needs a break in their semester!
I was so excited to take this class and it's heartbreaking to think how much of a let down it was. Don't even bother buying the text book, you won't use it or need it... it's pretty much just a waste of 90 bucks. The most entertaining thing about the class isn't the lectures, but rather contemplating the chaos that is her wardrobe and mind. INSANE!
I was so eager to read what everyone else had written because, yes, she is a nut. In my 2104 class she came one day with, what I swear, was her skirt from the previous lecture, wrapped around her head! She is an amazing prof though, when you can keep her on track, and the exams are something out of grade 4, only prob. is the lack of military his.
Superhuman grasp on roman history.
ive taken 4 of her classes. easiest exams possible - she no longer gives essay bc its too much of a hassle to mark. she is scattered brained, useless notes, rambles off, and needs to brush her hair. also needs to learn how to dress. but mostly needs to learn how to lecture.
Very knowledgeable of her History. Friendly, approachable, and helpful. Has a great review session before every test. Puts her lecture outline on the board. If you come to class and takes notes on her lectures, you don't have to read the text. Very down to earth. Difficult to follow her sequence at times, as she skips back and forth between points.
Firstly, the wardrobe was out of this world bad. At one point she was wearing a tutu with orange leggings! Secondly, she taught about her drug use and her subsequent 'trip back in time'. Also, she had favourites who sat at the front, were fat, and baked her cookies. I wonder who got the A's in that class... Her TA was straight out of 1930's Berlin.
SO bad I might cry. I have never encountered a more immature, condescending, defensive, unhelpful, incapable teacher in all my life.
Easily worst prof. I've ever had. Refuses to meet to review exams by saying times are "inconvenient" for her, and is so scatterbrained she seems baked 99% of the time during class. Very hypocritical - you lose marks on exams by misspelling words by a letter when she has 800 mistakes in her slides. Absolutely horrible prof!
Usual quirks present as noted by earlier ratings. This is the second couse that I've had with her (in a row) and I have to say that it has gotten much better! She now projects her notes, which leaves more time for interesting lectures. She posts her notes on the net. All in all, course is much more interesting, fun, and engaging! EASY tests!!!
Very Terrible.
Her class was a joke, she is extremely scatterminded, but it is still easy to get an A+ in the class
All the raters below me must be the biggest slackers in the world. I didn't know it was possible for anyone to add such depth and texture to an already interesting topic. There's no pressure to copy down notes in class; it's all posted. It's just your job to sit back and enjoy the lecture. Tests super fair: she clearly states what is on the test.
HAHA funny teacher. Very Very scatterbrained indeed. I had never taken a ancient history class before. I shall not be taking an other one anytime soon. I didn't understand anything. I learned more by reading wikipedia! She's all over the place her timelines are all over the place her slides aren't clear. Very confusing teacher. Not recommended.
Worst professor I've ever had the misfortune of being taught by. Slides aren't clear, she's all over the place with her teaching. Throws in random pictures and information that has nothing to do with she's teaching. I DO NOT recommend taking any of her classes. Stay away. Save yourself the trouble of having to teach yourself a class.
Very scatterbrained teacher with spelling mistakes all through her slides who always goes off topic.
I am actually not even sure this professor knows how to read/write. Even though she provides slides to her students, they are incomprehensible. Her lectures don't make sense, she usually can't answer students questions, and has a negative attitude. Her tests are fairly easy and she gives you a review to go over- that's at least a plus.
so knowledgeable and helpful!
Unfortunatly this class was not enjoyable. The prof. was unwilling to meet with students and refused to use e-mail. All the exams are fill in the blank, but throughout the exam the prof kept interupting to point out another missing word and also the many spelling mistakes. She also does not want you to understand the class but just memorize.
Holden = adorable!
She cannot keep to the subject at hand. Of 12 classes (3hour), only 3 were on the subject of the course. 4 were "background" (aka rambling about her personal interests which were totally unrelated) and 5 were student-taught courses/ presentations. I learned more from my fellow students than from her. Do not reccomend.
I was a teaching assistant for this prof. She was totally unclear in what she wanted me to do. She would say "I will give you these papers on the 5th, return them on the 15th." Doesn't give them until the 12th. Still wants them the 15th. Then called me at home to harrass me. Actually gave me a mental breakdown. I had to leave school for a month.
I thought her The Republic class was the easiest one I've ever taken. She gives you all the words you'll be tested on, which is a good thing as it's impossible to take notes. You don't even have to memorize dates -- just know the order. She can be a dry lecturer but it's a fair exchange for an easy A. The book isn't used, save your money.
Horrible professor, can't teach. Her approach to the subject is just memorize instead of understand. Can't follow her lectures, reads her online notes word for word. Tests seemed easy but somehow got satisfactory grades. Definitely avoiding her the rest of my time at Ottawa U. Waste of my money.
Useless teacher. Claims her exams are easy but in reality they're brutal. She makes you memorize a ridiculous amount of people, battles and terms. On top of that she makes you memorize them chronologically. Her lectures are extremely dry. She doesn't use email, she doesn't answer your questions about exams or lectures. Avoid at all costs. Brutal.
Very difficult course, expected us to memorise vast amounts of images and information. Droning lectures. Not recommended.
Topics course. Despite the topic being Life and Death in Pompeii, she taught it as an "Art and Architecture of Pompeii" class. Absolutely horrid, everything is art-based and learned absolutely nothing at all on the people of Pompeii or their lives around the time of the eruption which was the reason I signed up for the course. Not satisfied at all.
She is completely disorganized. She reads off her notes, which you have access to before hand on the website she uses, ARTstor (which is awful)- but she never proof reads them, and they often blatantly contradict themselves. I will do my absolute best to avoid taking another course from her ever again- even to the point of switching universities!!
I took this as an elective thinking it would be a typical easy memorization course. However, The prof's lectures are useless and the amount of detailed information she expects you to teach yourself is way too much. I thought everyone was exaggeration but they aren't. DO NOT take Holden. Worst prof I have ever had. Bad teacher, hard exams.
She is obviously passionate about her subject however she is very frazzled and all over the place. She gives us review sheets with all the stuff you need to know but then when you get to the exam there are names and terms never mentioned before. So beware of that. Other than that I liked her and her class.
I can't believe the amount of information she expects us to memorize! It's all images and the info about them HOWEVER, the terms are in Greek...hard to even read them but she wants us to memorize them. This course took up more of my time than my 4th year courses. Avoid her. And yes, as many others have stated, she's scatter-brained. AVOID! DROP IT!
She seems like she knows her stuff, but she can't teach. I literally printed all her notes and memorized. Not what I would call a good university course or professor.
omg awful. Like others have posted, scatter-brained, not helpful in the least, uses ARTstor but doesn't use OIV so if the server crashes, you won't have access to review notes or slides, lectures are all over the place, contradicts herself, doesn't give back tests, and has an exorbitant amount of info to memorize for exams.
DO NOT TAKE THE COURSE WITH THIS PROF. Extremely scatter brained, was not clear on her expectations of you in the course and on final exams. Horrible prof, goes off on tangents very often.
My gosh where to start. You can sit in her class and take all the notes you want (they will be useless due to the clarity issue). Then, on the exam review, there are names and events that do not appear anywhere on the slides. Upon doing said test, some questions are just ridiculous and either weren't covered or were irrelevant to Roman history.
SUCH a great prof!! She is so knowledgeable and friendly. She speaks very quickly in class, but that doesn't matter because almost all the notes are on artstor. You learn so much and the slide quizzes are easy to get perfect - 30 minutes of memory drills the night before and you're set for a 100% midterm
Loved her, she talks a little bit too fast, but the material is very interesting. She teaches very fun classes.
She posted learning modules at the beginning of the year (good), but you didn't need to go to class because she wouldn't say anything not on them (bad). She seems to know the material (although she contradicts herself on dates) but has no idea how to teach it. Not worth the class time, but a close reading of the notes should get you an A easily.
She posts study sheets for exams on virtual campus which makes studying really easy. The book is of no added value. Everything is found on the slides online. Professor can be cranky at times.
Gives less than 20 seconds per slide to take notes, spelling typos everywhere, gets distracted and rambles, gives a lecture with test material 2 days before test, upside: no homework, downside: only 2 midterms before final. Says "you know" after everything (no, I don't know). Doesn't return tests. Expects familiarity with over 150 terms per test.
Worst prof in my entire four year program. Irrelevant lectures, she won't test you on the material anyway. Tests consist of photographs of things that you are expected to remember. Ridiculous amounts of photos to study, for her to choose 10. You would need a photographic memory to pass this class, let alone do well. Huge waste of my money and time
She is dis-organized both in her lectures and even in the way the notes are posted online. I use the term "Notes" lightly. They are all but useless. She has difficulty staying on topic, important descriptions and titles of art pieces we need to remember are constantly being spelt differently or barely any information is shared about them.
Okay worst prof ever. She isn't there for you and when you ask questions her answers are very unclear (better ask the TAs). There is a ridiculous amount of stuff to know by heart for the exams. Being a straight A student, I find my marks disappointing for the amount of time I put in studying for tests. Avoid at all cost.
I was super nervous about having Prof Holden (for not one, but two courses in the same semester) after having read these reviews. Show up to class, take notes, and you're golden. She cares for her students and wants them to pass, is very clear about test and exam expectations and what you need to know. Also, she's hilarious.
Notes are all over the place and she doesn't seem like she really knows what she's talking about. Very boring lectures, doesn't really seem like she's even into the topic. She takes forever to email people back and even then isn't really helpful.... At least the good thing is that the tests are super easy
Good teacher overall, answers questions as clearly as she can. Is fair in her marking. Latin is a hard course to begin with so she's one of the easier profs I've had. It is necessary to do the weekly assignments and quizzes and homework in order to do well in the class. Don't take it if you just want to skip.
Really scattered. The classes are pretty much pointless but since there's no readings you have to go if you want to pass. Also she doesn't know how to make slideshows so half the words at the bottom get cut off by the screen and other times she doesn't know why she has a thing on her slide.
This professor doesn't seem to know what she is talking about. Her lectures are very scattered, unorganized and hard to follow. I think that it would be beneficial if she would research the content of her courses a little bit more in depth before lecturing.
I would never take another class with this prof. Her lectures are boring, she often goes off topic. She makes her exams seem easy - they aren't.
She skips through lectures so quickly that you won't have time to get anything down in your notes. She's also absolutely useless (and sometimes rude) when it comes to asking questions since she seems more confused about the subject than even the students do. If you can get through all this though, you can get a very high mark in the class.
Had her for 3 classes, extremely scatter brained. She skips through material so quickly that you don't have enough time to write notes. Her lectures are more confusing than the outlines that she posts online, and even those are addled with spelling and other errors. She'll turn any class into an art class. Tests are fill in the blank but hard AVOID
Course is easy and the midterms were fair, no assignments other than the two midterms and final exam. Not always super clear and gets flustered occasionally but very well prepared and lots of interesting information
I've had multiple classes with Holden, I am not a fan of her as a teacher but love her as a person. Her lectures are very scattered. Let's just say I wouldn't recommend a class with her.
Good prof! Totally knows the material and is a great lecturer. She sometimes gets carried away in the lecture, but don't bother taking more than a few notes; she gives you everything you need in lecture summaries and exam reviews. No required readings, no homework. Tests are super easy if you study.
Not a great professor, scatterbrained and not organized, but a great person. Holden is funny and nice and makes going to class fun. No written components just two midterms and a final which were fill in the blank and very simple if you study a little.
Class is 100% useless, she puts study sheets online and you can just fill it in with the notes she posts. BUT the notes are so scattered, confusing and sometimes WRONG that I just googles the whole thing. Got 88%.
I really enjoyed this class and am looking forward to the sequel BUT I wish the professor would go through the subject using HER OWN views in conjunction with the historical writers. I want to know what the professor thinks on this or that. I value what Livy wrote but I'd rather know how the teacher feels about X or what she thinks about Y.
She's good, a really sweet woman and a kind professor. She's quite detail oriented and always willing to help. She also posts notes
She's a great person, class time on the other hand is boring and useless. Then comes the midterms, and it's just memorizing terms that she tells you to memorize... so basically going to class is a waste of time. The final exam was shorter and easier than her midterms. I wouldn't necessary take her again, but wouldn't be mad if I did.
Very knowledgeable, but she gives very heavy, dry lectures. I learned a lot, but she could have made it more engaging. Impossible to write down everything from her lectures, but she posts detailed notes online from each lecture. But you still need to go to class to comprehend it all. No papers, just 2 tests and a final. If you study they are easy
Professor Holden has a very soft voice and refuses to wear a mic. She goes off track during her lectures and rambles on about unnecessary things. You can pass the class if you read all of her notes on Blackboard. Although, I wouldn't recommend it.
Professor Holden is a nice lady and clearly loves what she does. However, her lectures were dry and boring. The class is easy though. Study all the terms she provides for the midterms and the final and you can easily get an A.
She really knows her subject and is clearly passionate about it, but she is not a good lecturer at all. She reads off the slides and the slides are often full of spelling mistakes. She also speaks pretty quietly and refused to wear a microphone, which was problematic in a large classroom. People in the back could never hear anything!
Not a great lecturer, nice lady. Content interesting, light course load.
The format was 40% midterm and 60% final, both were fill in the blank exams with a word bank. She doesn't make her students buy a textbook (gives online versions), and even then you don't really have to use it. She is goofy, and will spend 30 mins at the beginning of every class trying to get the technology to work - but she is worth it! Loved her
Her classes are her reading off the powerpoint. She gives you all the information for the exam which is nice. You can for sure skip class just make sure you study hard for her tests because it is all learning things by heart. No essays or small assignements, just 3 exams.
The class itself was fairly easy, two exams with a take home and in-class component for each (the in-class ones being word bank tests with a list of terms and 30-50 questions). She's very knowledgeable but an extremely bad lecturer, it was hard to pay attention/take in any information at all. Luckily she posts EVERYTHING online so you'll be fine.
Not sure why AH is a prof at UofO, she dosnt seem to enjoy lecturing or cares about her students (except for the couple history majors that have taken classes with her before). Her classes weren't fun to attend. She stands there and just rambles, reading off her slides, & dosnt make it interactive. If you want to hate your semester then sign up.
I took CLA 2103 and 2104 with her and I think I went to 10 lectures total. She posts her lecture notes online which is helpful because she's an OK lecturer but she does get off track a lot and it's hard to follow her. All you need is to know the terms she posts and you'll get an A+. The midterms/final are fill in the blank w/ word banks.
I've enjoyed both classes (CLA2103/2103) I have taken with Professor Holden. No reading if you go to class, but you do need to know the material. If you don't go to class, all of the slides are very detailed and posted online. She does make a fair amount of mistakes while lecturing, but corrects them so pay attention. Exam/tests were very easy.
I've taken two different CLA 3110 courses with her, and absolutely love her classes! There are no required readings and the tests are fair, if you don't prepare well you won't do well, but if you put the effort in you will get an easy A+. She is a very caring and intelligent professor, but her lectures are sometimes dry.
You have to put in the time to memorize dates, places, and names in order to pass this class. No ifs ands or but's about it. Once you get around that, it's very simple to get a good grade; you just can't skip out on the time it takes to memorize things. Her exams are very basic in your knowledge testing, it's just you spitting out the memorization.
Straightforward exam format which makes studying easy, but she cannot string together any ideas. She is unclear in class and in her class notes. To many typos and mistakes for anything to make sense. In class, all she does is read off the powerpoint and sounds surprised and confused by her information. Also, she is constantly changing the notes.
Overall Antonia Holden is a fair professor. As long as you work through the lecture material she posts online and follow the Study Sheets its an easy A. Some notes are: making flash cards for the course will help immensely, devote enough time to study as its all memorization, and beware that the course is very memory intensive Good luck!
Anotnia Holden is boring in the sense that she reads off the slides and a handful of times stopped the class because she didn't know what she is lecturing. Nice thing is that she gives a study sheet and if you follow it you'll be fine. You don't need to attend lectures, she posts everything on line.
Had Prof Holden for 4 classes in my undergrad and she's great. Anything that isn't a 4th year seminar class is super easy. 2 midterms and a final with all the notes provided. She even gives you a study sheet
She is a real gem and her topics for seminars etc. are always interesting. If you do your work and research then you will get an A+. If you don't care then drop her classes. She is always accessible and answers e-mails very fast.
Easiest class ever. She blatantly says you do not need to go to class. She posts all the notes you need for the midterms/exam. The midterms and exams are chronology then match the definitions to the terms(terms provided beforehand), but she is a terrible prof. Talks about primary sources never graded on. Contradicts herself multiple times.
Such a sweet lady (who knows her stuff!). Two midterms and a final make up the grading, and the direction is very clear (fill-in-the-blank and put events in order). The lecture content is very heavy, but notes are provided and revised, and the tests don't deviate from them. Just be ready to memorize a lot of dates, events, and names!
I'm told Holden is actually very sweet, but in lectures, the poor woman is completely useless. I stopped going to class after the first midterm (and I NEVER skip class), still got a 90 with barely any effort. She posts study sheets before midterms and the exam, memorize those and enjoy your easy A. Use mnemonic devices and flash cards, make bank.
Antonia Holden is funny and marks you in a fair way by giving 3 tests all short answer and multiple choice which tests you on the facts about the roman empire. This means that if you study and really put your mind to it, it is an easy A+. Overall great class, great prof and interesting lecture notes! I learned a lot about the Roman Empire!
Great elective for easy A+ with minimal studying required (word bank, entirely fill in the blank)
Don't go to class. I went to 3 classes (2 were midterms) and I don't skip class normally. She gives you a sheet with all the info and test material, so just make a bunch of flash cards. Tests are fill in the blank WITH A WORD BANK. I put in no effort and got an A (could've had an A+ if our final wasn't canceled due to covid). Highly recommend
Professor Holden has a heart of gold! She is definitely one of the kindest and most caring professors I have ever had at uni. She is super knowledgable and her lecture are always engaging. This is an elective I encourage anyone to take since you will learn so much. Her exam criteria is super clear because she really wants her students to succeed!
I LOVE THIS PROF. SHE IS A REAL DIAMOND THAT NEEDS TO BE TREASURED!!! If I ever see another Holden class available, best believe I am taking it. She is very nice, helpful, and the tests are exactly what is on the lectures and powerpoints. You don't need to watch her lectures, all the information for the test is available on the powerpoints.
She showed us her dog on the first day. She's sweet, and has extended quiz deadlines for me several times when I was either sick or someone passed. Lots of weekly quizzes and detailed powerpoint reading- hope you're visual and good at memorizing. No papers though. (Yay!)
This class is a joke, and super easy to do well in. Take this if you want the easiest A+ you've ever experienced.
Professor Holden taught the class asynchronously like many other professors this year, and it worked pretty well. The content was really interesting, and the quiz and exam questions were all straight from the power-points. The professor is very educated on the subject and an extremely nice person. Take her and this class, you wont regret it.
Amazing professor and an interesting class. Lots of quizzes but that meant a final exam that was only worth 20%, a nice bonus. Professor Holden is an amazing person and a great professor.
the lectures were dry, you can't learn anything. Too much to memorize
I wouldn't recommend her class when it's online. She doesn't give a list of topics/terms that'll be on the test like she normally does in person. There's too many readings to do and lectures aren't helpful. Plus make sure to take CLA2103 beforehand or you'll be totally lost!
A real gem of a professor. Read her slides, memorize whats on them and understand what she is talking about and the class is as straightforward as it can be. Very accommodating and is always ready to answer questions and help you in regards to anything
Definitely an easy class if you have to braincells to rub together. Incredibly forgiving marking system and the presentation you have to do at the end required zero effort to get an A+.
If you can avoid it, don't take this class. All exams are MC and are essentially tests on Latin names and terms. Huge PowerPoint presentations (asynchronous) that make it impossible to focus on what you need to know for the tests. I have never felt so uninspired and discouraged by a class, especially as a history lover.
So I took this class because I love roman history, I now hate roman history this class was the most boring and dull thing I've ever experienced. It is literally just PowerPoint after Powerpoint. It feels lazy while it's challenging to make online exciting just assigning students to read PowerPoint For hours makes watching paint dry fun.
Class was extremely easy but also extremely boring. 100% asynch with 2 midterms and a final (non cumulative). If you want an easy A, take it. If you want to learn more about roman history, don't.
This class is literally just copy-paste; the only thing you will be doing is going through power points to find definitions of terms that will be on the midterm or final exam. The review for the final exam is just 11 pages of terms. I am incredibly disappointed in this class as I love Roman history, but this has made me hate it.
I am not sure if online teaching changed this professor but she is the "no-show" type. She recycles her entire class every year now and does not have synchronous teaching. So it feels like she is just absent. She does host Q&As weekly. If you don't mind that, it's still an easy class. Just don't think you'll gain a passion for Roman history after.
A very kind woman, who everyone dislikes as a professor but the most caring person. Lectures were pretty mono-toned and everything was read off from PowerPoints (these PowerPoint slides were recycled). However, if you just put a bit of effort into this class, it's an easy A.
Bruh, so easy. Topic was Roman Pompeii. Reads off of ppt slides. 3 exams. Entirely multiple choice. She was the same for 2103 and 2104 (online). If you want a grade boost, and don't mind dry lectures or you don't care much for the topic, take her.
I started watching the lectures 36 hours before each test, didn't study aside from writing notes on those lectures and did fantastic on both midterms. No assignments/tests aside from the two midterms and a final exam. Would definitely be dull if it were in person (she reads exactly from the PowerPoint) but great for online.
just too many powerpoints very hard to memorize
If I knew how tough her tests were I would have dropped out of the class. More than half of the stuff she puts on the test is stuff we had never covered in slides or readings. She also leaves the setup and everything on the TAs, which isn't fair to them. It is an online class, but that doesn't give her the excuse to not give effort to the students.
Class is pretty easy, basically just 3 online quizzes including a final exam that was non-cumulative. There is A LOT to memorize tho including many names that sound very similar. The class is also very boring, you'll spend 90% of the time staring at black slides with text. If you want an easy class, take it.
Boring class, old/recycled powerpoint recorded audio lectures. Minimal effort put into this class by the professor. No live meetings required. Test bank is huge, so be prepared for curveballs and questions you've never seen before.
This class was not what I expected. I had heard it was an easy elective to take, and with my heavy course load I was excited, but that was not the case. The amount of content is ridiculous and she just reads the slides. While she gives you the terms to memorize, they have so many contexts that they're not helpful. Study hard for this course.
Her course is online and asynchronous, which is nice. Her lectures are clearly recycled from years ago and they are covered in typos that she clearly won't bother to correct. The presentations are black backgrounds filled with words and sometimes her face in the corner, but usually not. You're expected to memorize names + dates. Do not take.
if you are tempted to take this course, please don't. While the final is multiple choice, the multiple choice isn't single word answers but rather sentences. The lecture videos are black and white and boring. The final was extremely hard.
i tallied up the amount of reading for the final and it consists of no less than 1057 slides. Does this prof live in reality? The finals not even cumulative. The other tests were no less than 500 pages of reading as well.
Puts absolutely no effort into teaching + many questions are purposefully way too obscure, designed to trip you up.
Gave far more content than could ever be covered in an in-person class. Everything was horribly organized, the slides were recorded and recycled from previous years, and she had her TA do all the Q and As, and the tests were awful. Never again.
This class is heavy on the slideshows. There are way too many slides to be done in 80 minutes, way too much writing on them. If you're taking this because you're interested in the Roman Republic get ready to spend and ungodly amount of time of the Neolithic era and everything that came before and the politics of Rome, not the historical figures.
Heavy on memorization, but ChatGPT and unstuck AI helped me prep for the noncumulative exams. Boring lectures, but an easy A if you put in the work. Wouldn't take again unless absolutely necessary.
A master class in how not to make a slideshow. I made better PowerPoints when I was seven. Content is extremely disorganized and she keeps changing things. PDFs also aren't searchable, which is a major accessibility problem. When people say online school is poor quality education, they're referring to classes like this.
This class is just pre recorded videos of the prof reading off recycled powerpoints. Way to much information to cover in the alotted time. Very hard to do well and will take up more time then any other class for less reward.
the lecture pdfs are LONG but the tests are all multiple-choice and easy to get 100 on. she gives a list of terms that will be on the test. just read through the lectures and make notes of the terms. For some pdfs ctrl+f doesn't work.
Lecture slides are ESSAYS. The only helpful thing about this class is her study guide. Still way too much information for an online class. She expects you to learn more than an in-person prof would.
I don't want to seem entitled but, for reference, until now, I always got A to A+s in History classes. Prof. Holden seems a kind and knowledgeable woman but, unfortunately, her proficiency at teaching online courses does not reflect this. Modules are walls of text, exams take the form of prolonged and over-specific multiple-choice quizzes, etc.
Most people get an A+ in this course. It is easy, you just need to read through hundreds of lecture pdfs and make notes based on the terms in her study guides. Then ctrl + f during the tests and exam. Guaranteed A+.
The class format is absolutely awful when it comes to actually learning. It's all by-heart memorization of endless walls of text on a black power-point, and the exams are entirely constituted of multiple choice questions. This is the laziest I've ever seen when it comes to university teaching.
