Antonio was good for the most part, many mundane assignments that seemingly had no real value. Lots of busy work, class is an easy A but extremely tedious. Every class felt like group therapy, very weird.
Interesting class that makes you learn about psychology and how it applies to yourself
Not a hard class, but a lot of work.
i wasn't a fan of Dr. Cepeda, he used powerpoint every class and it often got really boring, lots of work but not a difficult class at all
I loved this course :-)
I'm taking this class right now and find it very interesting and relevant. Dr. Cepeda lectures occasionally, but there is a lot of discussion and in class activities.
You learn and think a lot--and laugh also.
Nothing to do with psychology at all, just a D1 filler. No exams but daily quizzes and written assignments, fairly graded. Very dry and dull, mostly class discussion. Material was VERY basic, and was only three times applied to psychology. NOT a class about cross-cultural clinical interactions, IS a class on basic "what is race? what is racism?"
Ab Psych, easy A. No exams, just online coursework due each week, with a quiz due every Saturday, and occasional blog posts. During the unit on PTSD, he showed a graphic video of 9/11 which was longer than it should have been and was not closely related enough to the topic. It made people leave-- completely unprofessional and inconsiderate of him.
After having met with Benito as an adviser first, I was disappointed with the setup, clarity, and lectures for this class. He clearly cares about his students and wants students to be excited but hasn't quite figured out teaching a large class. I'd give him a second try in a smaller class, but I definitely wouldn't recommend him for a large lecture
I enjoyed the class format and the in-class discussions.
Dr. Cepeda-Benito is very dedicated and cares a lot about the students.
Terrible. Worst Professor I've ever had. Didn't even show up to the first exam and skipped out of our last review session early as kids were still asking questions. Horrible, horrible lecturer and it obsessed with his own research. Getting good grade because I study from the book. 10/10 would NOT recommend
this is the first class I've taken with Dr. Cepeda-Benito and I will also enroll in his abnormal psych course this summer. He's fair and very helpful.
Dr. Cepeda-Benito encouraged lots of discussion and allowed people to speak their minds about very sensitive topics. Some of the readings were dry but others were very interesting. This is a good class for people who want to understand their own prejudice and how to get rid of it.
Literally just teaches out of the book but does clicker so you have to go to class. He's so disorganized and literally from day 1 I was confused by the way he structured the syllabus and all the crap we had to do. Really nice guy but painfully boring lectures and unclear answers to questions at times.
He has no clue what he's doing. Your grade may suffer because he is so incapable of explaining topics that I'm curious if he understands them himself.
He is a a really good guy with good intentions but lacks the ability to teach outside of the textbook. Lectures are long and dry and requires attendance for slides that are taken right out of the book. Requires iclickers and extremely confusing and unorganized homework. Should have realized sooner to pass just follow the book.
Professor Antonio was AWSOME. He was incredibly understanding and patient. I liked his lectures a lot. The course allows you to get a good grade if you're willing to work hard
I'm taking Research Methods with him this semester. I find his classes well organized and easy to follow. He does follow the textbook, but he adds his own examples (go to class and take good notes if you want to do well in exams). There is homework every week and he is strict with deadlines.
I avoid this class by doing homework for orgo because I hate it so much. He is SO DRY and digresses like crazy. I can never figure out what the his point is and honestly I wish I took this class online in the summer because it has done nothing but ruin my semester. Exam questions are ALWAYS worded weird and NEVER clear. Good luck.
He gives assignments due the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (during break) and gives an exam the week before the final.
Antonio is the worst professor I've ever had. His lectures are direct quotes from the textbook & his class examples are the exact examples from the reading & he is incapable of coming up with his own when asked. The course is a 250 person lecture & I've never seen more that 40 people show up. Completely rude and unprofessional through email.
This is both the worse course/worst professor Ive ever had. Professor Cepeda-Benito is well-intentioned and kind - BUT he contradicts the textbook, himself, and disregards the classs confusion. We had 12 assignments this semester, he graded 1/4 of them at random. He pointlessly scolds lack of participation and blames students for his inadequacy.
Great professor--great patience--very supportive and accommodating.
Antonio is a caring, super nice guy. He posts weekly homework assignments but gives you 7 to 14 days to complete them. Exams are difficult but fair--attendance is not mandatory but many exam questions are from lecture examples.
Clear, organized, a bit different but good sense of humor. Not a pushover but reasonably flexible.
Heavy on homework for a 0-level class (freshman), but otherwise fantastic. A Monday 8am class but he made it worth showing up. Funny, accessible, and always willing to admit when he didn't know something. Hands out candy for asking questions, and who does that? :-D 53 is pretty dry material but he did a lot to make it interesting.
His review sessions are going through a practice test, waiting until the end to go over the answers, running out of time to go over the answers, and then promptly taking the practice exam off of blackboard. Exams are generally unpredictable and also the third midterm is the right before the final :)
test over break, confusing lectures about his own studies, unclear test questions
He means very well. He obviously puts some time and effort into making sure people understand the material. But he very clearly does not know how to lecture this course. It's an easy grade, but he doesn't provide studying tips or study guides. If you can't handle dry lectures, 8 am time, or no study guides I do not recommend this course.
Took abnormal with Antonio so I had low expectations already, but this was awful. The exam questions were very unclear and there were times he tried to give you "gimme" questions but the questions still made no sense, same with the homework. He's a great PERSON, grab a coffee with him. Don't take his class. Should've been an easy A, but was def not
This guy went overboard to help students and provide extra help. I found his lectures very interesting. He is strict with the course rules and deadlines.
I enjoyed the class. Antonio was very personable and fair.
Antonio is a good guy with a passion for teaching. Although I took PSYS 053 with him and it was atrocious. He does not have the first clue how to teach and his test questions are incredibly unclear. This class should be the most straight forward class but some how this guy makes it so it is not. Recommend taking this class online over summer.
tough class by a very caring, nice guy
He's a good professor and wants his students to understand the material and pass the class, but the homework can be confusing at times and exams are pretty tough. All multiple choice and it's more than just memorizing terms. He wants students to apply concepts, which can be hard. Offers extra credit but not much.
If I didn't want someone to come to UVM, I would have them sit in on a class by this professor. I have watched him explain concepts incorrectly on multiple occasions. I stopped attending lecture after he took an entire 75 minute class to poorly explain a topic which a 3-minute YouTube video covers better. Also, the homework is excessive.
You can tell he has a good heart and he means well, but that only goes so far when his lectures don't make any sense and you're better off reading the textbook than attending class. Attendance doesn't matter & exams are 90% of your grade. Avoid if possible; if not, skip class and read the book. Really wish someone told me that going into it.
Hyperactive and unclear about material. Speeds through material. English is NOT his first language, its Spanish. Therefore it may be difficult to understand him. I was bored in majority of the lectures in the fall of '18. The textbook was somewhat helpful. It's a test-dependent course, meaning that your overall grade depends on them. HW is tedious
very caring and knowledgeable
There are too many things wrong with this professor, and his Spanish accent is not one of them. 1. He is a horrible lecturer who skips his own slides and contradicts himself. 2. He doesn't respond to emails. Not even for an emergency. 3. Mandatory "lab" with mundane and unnecessary group work. 4. Difficult tests. 5. Likely a diversity hire.
Arrogant professor who repeatedly places his own name in the exams with his Dr. title (in exam questions). He chooses to use the publisher's practice exercises (by making students pay extra for access), and they're poorly designed for review purposes. His "review slides" are just regular lecture slides combined into a file. Incompetent teacher.
He is a great guy, but his lectures are boring. Labs will help boost your grade and exams are pretty basic if you go to every class and pay attention. Sometimes his exams questions are not clear and when he attempts to explain questions they usually become more confusing. Very nice guy, but be expected for outside work or prior Stats to understand.
Very confusing slides. Badly phrased questions in exams. Little flexibility. He makes me uncomfortable at times.
The directions for some of the group activities were confusing. To be honest, I would have received the same grade with or without lectures, they were pointless. The professor did a good job laying out the work for the course, but it felt like I was teaching myself the material and he was a mediator.
This professor is awful. The online lectures were useless and I would have received the same grade regardless of whether I went. The group projects were mildly interesting, but were always spoiled by just how confusing his explanations of the assignments were. To make matters worse, when asked, his "clarifications" were incoherent and useless.
Very confusing professor.
He really does care. The TAs always help clear confusion and are there to make you succeed. As a person, Benito does really care about all of us. Sometimes the teaching can be unclear, but he always was responsive to my emails in a thoughtful way. I thought the class was pretty straight forward and you just had to do the homework to pass.
I took his class over the summer (asynchronous/online) and I really enjoyed it! He was very clear about expectations and gave each student the opportunity to work at their own pace. He cares about his students growth and abilities; if you reach out with a question, he is always quick to respond. Just do the homework & readings and youll do great!
great summer class:-)
Took this class with Antonio online during covid and he is extremely confusing as a professor. The homework he assigns becomes redundant as you take multiple quizzes and assignments on the same single chapter, every single week. The lectures weren't useful, he was extremely confusing, and it was a better use of my time to not go to class.
Great professor--lots of energy and great sense of humor
Very disorganized and chaotic. Does not stick to the schedule as he proposed it (normal class tuesday and group work thursday) and tends to ramble during class. It's mandatory to attend class and not be late, however he himself is frequently late. Only uses microsoft teams for posting assignments and work, instead of the learning platform provided
Currently in class writing this because he was not in mid semester evals so here's this instead. Absolutely awful. Unorganized, confusing, ditzy. He literally left midsemester to go abroad with which we did not know until it was too late to drop. He teaches as if he is a toddler who was given no instruction or notes on what he was teaching or how.
If I was forced to choose between literally dying or having to take this class again - I would start writing my will. I thought I was crazy at first for not understanding a single direction until I found someone next to me also said "Huh?" at the same time. And this guy gets paid 180k for this - despicable. Don't take Psych Research Methods.
DO NOT take a class with this professor, at least not research methods. He gives no explanations for things and isnt very nice. every assignment is so complicated and he only teaches with the text book. this class makes me want to cry. he also interrupts your questions a lot
Antonio is definitely better in upper level courses! His 200 lvl courses are very easy and mostly discussion based, and way better than the other upper level courses in terms of courseload.
Professor Antonio Cepeda-Benito could be said to be the prime example of why people hate men. Instead of admitting when he makes a mistake, he will tell you that you are wrong and continue to repeat back the same information worded differently to make you feel inferior. When confused about something, asking him will only further your confusion.
Extremely unorganized and his assignments never make sense. He is so disorganized it is sometimes amusing. The test are extremely easy which is one of the few good things about the class. The textbook is online and free which is nice.
All over the place and doesn't teach any material. Only help is the text book, which doesn't go into depth about the calculations you're expected to know. Gave surprise homework with out explaining the material, and expected completion by next class, and, he himself doesn't even know the difference between validity and reliability. Awful teacher.
absolutely terrible he drained my spirit. went abroad halfway through the semester and was projected on the board through teams from a cafe. we could hear people talking in the background. completely unaccessible outside of class, does not respond to emails or teams messages. the poor tas had to essentially run the entire class for him.
Worst class I've taken at UVM, felt like such a waste of time and money. The prof left half-way through the semester and tried to teach remotely, which just didnt work. He barely taught, relying on the textbook but then quiz and exam questions were contrary to the textbook. Assignments and grades were unclear, without guidance or help. TAs saved us
I don't think I've felt anger like I felt in this class. I genuinely didn't learn anything because we never actually had a formal lecture. Antonio left halfway through and taught over teams, and the TAs ran the whole class for him. Confusing instructions, argued with students after they raised concerns, SO DISORGANIZED. Don't take this class.
Antonio was a nice professor until you actually had a question. He is INCREDIBLY unorganized, off track, and gives confusing answers, as if he never expected it. His TA's, who taught his class for him while he was in another country, were confused. He will insult you personally if you critique his semester-long group project structure.
Took this class in 2019 and it has traumatized me since. He's one of the reasons I changed my majors though I was near completion of my BS degree. Creepy guy who hovered over students closely at a 7:30AM final exam. Incapable of teaching. Offered extra credit research participation for ONLY MALE STUDENTS.
Every assignment is made using AI, class begins with an AI quiz made from an AI summarized reading. Extremely disorganized and frustrating, does not teach any material. Declined to post instructions or a grading rubric for semester long group project. Fine if you want an A for doing nothing, not if you want to learn anything.
A very nice, caring guy, but didn't really teach us anything. Basically all class material was AI generated for some reason? Every class was essentially a discussion or opportunity to work on group projects. No tests, no lectures, just independent readings and quizzes at the start of every class.
Class would start with AI quiz based on AI reading(s). Then we'd jump into an assignment that felt like busy work. Hence being AI generated, the assignments were confusing & didn't feel relevant. All concepts discussed were surface level. Barely lectured, time spent in class was mainly for filling out tedious assignments & working on group project.
Uses AI to write tests and grade papers. Pretty disorganized and disengaging, it was almost amusing. He's a nice guy and sometimes funny, but I hardly learned anything valuable in this course. He will also begin by stating that this is NOT a psychology course, so if you're planning on learning psych material, you're out of luck.
It was the best course I ever took in college
This course truly helped me develop a deeper interest in psychology. Antonio's teaching style is clear, organized, and very engaging, which makes the content both fun and thought-provoking
I've taken many psychology courses, but this course was by far the hardest. The assignments required a lot of time and effort, and I often felt overwhelmed by the amount of work.
I looked forward to this class—it made a hice difference in my life!
He was fair and gave people multiple chances. Easy going and supportive
Great class dealing with important topics. Lots of group assignments, but made it possible to complete by allowing us to coordinate during class time.
Lots of class discussion on important meaty issues. Most caring and respectful professor at UVM.
Very supportive and caring professor. Gives lots of homework, but to get a good grade all you need to do is be diligent and organized. His teaching style is different, but once you get used to it you will enjoy research methods.
It is not an easy course--but the grading is fair. There are lots of group-based projects, which can be a drag if you have disorganized students in your team. On the whole, a meaningful learning experience.
The professor was awesome and created a welcoming and engaging environment. He made sure everyone felt included and pushed us gently to share our ideas. Since he knew a lot of students were using AI to summarize the readings and others weren't, he took the extra step of reviewing and posting summaries himself.
Do not take cross-cultural psych. The professor is posting fake positive reviews that are all posted on the same date. I didn't learn anything all semester, as his readings, quizzes, and assignments were all 100% AI generated. Any other 3000-level psych class would be a much better experience.
This professor was extremely kind and considerate. I'm not sure why he has gotten such negative reviews. I am writing this to combat them because I do not feel they are accurate at all. He is lovely kind and funny. I would take a course from him again.
This professor is very kind and thoughtful. He is easygoing and teaches well. I would take a course with him again.
As others have said, this prof has clearly posted reviews about himself to try to counteract the poor but truthful reviews about his class. I was incredibly disappointed by his disrespectful attitude and the fact that I spent so much money to take a course that almost entirely consisted of AI-generated quizzes and materials. I learned nothing.
Wasn't planning on leaving a review since I am a senior about to graduate, but after witnessing him show blatant disrespect to students in class today that asked a genuine/respectful question, I dont think I can hold myself back. NEVER take a 3000 class with him if you can avoid it. I wish I chose to graduate late rather than take this my last sem
Class always started with an AI-generated quiz from AI-generated readings—basically a mess. Most of the time was spent doing dull, repetitive assignments that felt like filler. The content was shallow at best, with no real depth or explanation. It felt like the instructor just handed everything off to ChatGPT and called it a day. Learned nothing.
He means well and is overall nice, but is the single most disorganized and unclear professor I've ever had. The other reviews capture it well... he uses AI generated quizzes and regularly admits that his questions don't make sense. This class shouldn't be hard but his grading criteria is super unclear and you never know what he wants you to do.
I would recommend avoiding this professor at all costs if possible. He uses AI for all of his exams and never knows the answer to his questions. His instructions are nonexistent and unclear if there are any. I don't usually write reviews but I think it is important to know you are going into confusion and disarray if you take one of his courses.
The course relied way too heavily on AI tools, and it showed. Every week started with a confusing quiz based on readings that seemed auto-generated and barely relevant. Assignments were mind-numbing and repetitive. The instructor seemed to let ChatGPT do all the teaching. No real discussion, feedback, or depth. Honestly felt like a waste of time.
Students regularly had to correct his quizzes because he would get the wrong answer... to his own quiz... He is kind and funny but not a great professor. If you read the chapters and participate in lab work it's an easy A. Exams were challenging but fair.
