Good teacher, but he didn't give examples and stuff.
You would think this would be an interesting class- it could be- perhaps with another professor. He is kindof dry and his lectures go long and are all over the place.
His notes compliment the readings well and he's a very enthusiastic lecturer.
He is very interesting when he does his lectures though it may be times very lengthy. His slide presentations are very helpful in summarizing the chapters in the book. His tests are basically on the notes from class. He is very upbeat in class and easy to approach with your problems.
The class is not only boring, but the way he presents the material and the graphs he uses are terrible. The notes are NOT available online and he frequently switches slides before you are done copying the lengthy slides... Maybe a calmer more organized professor would make the class more interesting
This teacher Sucks
Very interesting class
His class isn't exciting, but he's a good teacher and will never surprise you on a test!
Very enthusiastic lecturer and his notes compliment the textbook well. His tests can be a little tough (know your stuff b/c he gives essay questions!)and he doesn't post his notes on blackboard, which sucks because he often goes too fast to copy them all down. But, overall I recommend him.

Nice guy, terrible teacher. Pushes through lectures way too fast and gives confusing examples. Difficult tests. I would recommend against taking him for PSY 201.
The class is boring. Not many people find statistics interesting anyway. Freitas is very upbeat and tries to make the lectures appealing, but fails. He also speaks too fast and doesn't allow enough time to copy notes.
Living hell. always early, stresses the worng concepts, cant tell his knees from his elbows. The class was simple enough, just read and do the homework- but beware you'll be teaching youself. yells at you if you doze off. work due when lec. starts or no credit. moron, avoid at all costs
The class is flawed:1) no lecture notes posted 2)speaks way too fast and 3) not enough time to copy each slide and listen at the same time 4) must attend class everyday because of "suprised quizzes" 5) no curves. the grade is based on 70-100 which is C-A. 6) must likely you'll end up self-teaching.
Ok, A+ for effort. For those who do not attend class, its really hard. If you go to class and do the extra credits and homeworks you should do ok. Textbook sucks. TA's are helpful. Basically if you do the work and go to class you should at least get a B if your good at math an A
First of all it's a statistics class so he has that going against him but he professes his love for the subject so at least he's doing what he likes. If you go to class, do the homework and the extra credit you should be ok. Make sure to copy the notes because they won't be posted on Blackboard.
tries his best to make the class interesting. don't blame him...it is stats. i don't like his teaching which he doesnt post any notes online and they must be taken during class. Very hard to do when the class is extremely small and the only seat left is all the way in the back. A for effort.
This man should not be allowed any where near students. He tries to make crap appear appealing. He knows his material yet he is not the guy that should lecture you at 8:20 in the morning. Heads hit the desks at about 8:40. If I become very rich, I will hire him to read me bedtime stories.
super hott! although the material he teaches is not always that easy he makes time to help you and gives you alot of extra credit. You even get extra credit points for just going to class.
Statistics is a seemingly hard class made easy through the teachings of Freitas. Although I am anti-mathematical, I managed to do well in Freitas class mostly due to sitting up front and listening to lecture. He is a very good teaching who manages to bring clarity to confusing material.

I think very good teacher. He does his best to try and make u understnad... and will keep explaining until u do. he started to post notes on line which is good in case u dont get them during class
His lecture are interesting but some of them will make u asleep due to the early lecture in the morning. U just gotta read the book and memorize, print out his lec notes and remeber some of the experiments cause there are short essays which can work to ur favor. He has +4 pts if u go to class and he has usually questionaires.
he was a good teacher... he's very passionate about what he teaches and he is very helpful when you don't understand
Very easy class. As long as you go to class, you will do well. He gives you extra credit for just being in class and tests are very easy.
I only showed up for class just for the extra credits. Just read the text and his slides from Blackboard and got an A without having to take the final. His lectures are interesting, but make sure you really read the slides. Plus, do the extra credits. His exams are 34-35 multiple choice and 2-3 short answer.
hes great
Very easy class as long as you attend lectures or else you'll be completely lost. But trust me you'll wanna go to lecture cuz he's so hot you'll wanna go. He's also very understanding and fair. Has ways of getting extra cedit. And has an optional final exam which counts as 50% of your grade if you choose to take it. He's wonderful I love him.
AMAZING PROFESSOR....He is so dedicated to his students and really goes out of his way to explain the material. I love his examples, slide notes, and short movie clips he shows in class. I love going to this class. *I'm a psych major, and I'm happy I chose this field because being in Professor Freita's class makes me love it more.
He was a pretty good professor. But I thought he was a bit confusing at times. I like how he showed us a lot of clips in class but some were boring and unneccesary. I hated the short answers on the exams. Overall the class was good.
professor is nice but i found his lectures extremely boring..exams were kinda hard!!
He cost me money, if you want a jerk for psy 240 and have to worry about a 17 point essay on the test then I urge you to take him, but if you want a real teacher has your teacher than don't take him
Easiest class in the world! I went to class about 5 times in the semester and got an A. His exam questions are based on material from the Powerpoint presentations (4-5 per class, all on Blackboard). The essay questions are just a paragraph each and are on the experiments he discusses. I don't understand how people think this class is hard!!
Attendance is not mandatory, but if you go to class anyway and before each exam you thoroughly study the notes that are posted on Blackboard, you can get an A. Also, if you miss a class you just might miss an extra credit opportuinty so you don't want to risk being absent. Freitas is a nice man and a good professor.
Overall a great professor!!! When I took his stats class spring 06' his lectures were directly from his blackboard printouts and you barely had to refer back to the textbook to do well in the class. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but it helps since he described the material clearly. Got a B with good effort and decent study group.
I couldn't believe I didn't mind waking up for an 8:20AM class! Great guy, fun material, class goes by fast. Easy exams.
One of the best classes I ever took. He is excited and running around and loves wat he does
best professor i have ever had. He lectures are clear and interesting. He is able to understand students' questions and give a very good answer. if he is teaching another class besides social psy, i'm taking it. bonus: you don't really have to buy the book to get an A.
Good teacher. I recommend him if you want to take stats. Easy going, knowledgeable, and makes this course easy. take him.
He's a decent teacher. He movies pretty quickly but he's clear in his speaking.
You do have to go to class bc essay questions are mostly based on what was discussed in class. He does post slides up on blackboard but he purposely takes some stuff out so you do have to go to class in order to fully understand the material. Class average for this semester is 70, STUDY! btw he's nice, funny, not bad to look at.
Good teacher. Class is not mandatory but there is random in class quizzes which can each add an additional point to your average. This semester there was a total of four.Book is not mandatory but there is some details from it that appears on the quizzes. Four tests you get to drop the lowest score or opt not to take the final at all. Plus he's hot
Good class, keeps lectures interesting and funny. Text book is a good review but most of the material is from lecture. Gives a lot of extra credit too!
prob one of the best professors I have had. extremely knowledgable and interesting and has a passion for what he does. explains material really well. the book is a great supplement to his lecture notes its good to help study. tests are tricky so prepare to study and go over the notes alot! and oh yeah hes one hot tamale!!
Posts his lectures online. Very interesting lectures so you might as well go to them and plus, there's extra credit on certain days (they won't be announced). Fair tests. For the final, just review your old tests by going to the TAs' office hours. You don't have to go to the final if you did well on the first 3 tests. Very nice and outgoing guy.
Buying the textbook is not necessary. The tests are based on his lecture notes.
Such a boring class. His tests are pretty difficult and you kind of have to just teach yourself the material because it's impossible to pay attention in class because of severe boredom. I basically only go to class to look at him because he's really hott haha
Attendance is a MUST. There's a quiz every friday. So there's only 2 days to understand the material b4 the next quiz. Readin the textbook is helpful but i HIGHLY recommend goin to the TAs or the prof office hours. Final isnt mandatory if ur pleased with ur quiz average. If you tak this class jus mak sure u really study, but hes very nice n helpful
He is good at teaching but you have to come to class everyday don't miss a day b/c you don't know when he'll give extra credit. It's only worth 1/2 point though not much but still something. Let me warn u though he seems nice but he's not really Go talk to him and you'll see what I mean. He's not willing 2 help you and tells u 2 just deal with it.
Prof. Freitas is an awesome prof. His lectures are interesting and will help you throughout the rest of your stay at SBU; especially if you're a psych major. He's extremely enthusiastic and gives lots of opportunities for everyone to get A's. GREAT PROF!!!!!
Great lecturer. If you need the class and he's teaching it, take it. He seems to enjoy teaching and likes it when students come to lecture. Very approachable too. Gives opportunities for extra points on final grades through in class experiments, usually surveys. Definitely take him.
Dr. Freitas is good and comprehendible. Lecture slides are posted on blackboard so going to class isn't necessary but he does random extra credit surveys throughout the semester which is 1 point each added on to your overall grade. Also, the review session before an exam is another extra credit point. Study lecture notes and you should be fine.
Great professor! There's a quiz every Friday which is great because its easy to remember a week of material.Optional final and extra credit opportunities. Extremely helpful in office hours but attendence is a must. Go to class, download the review sheets for the quiz and you're going to get an A. Im horrible at math and I have an A average!
I can't stand this man! He's an ok professor but the way he teaches the class irks me so much. He talks to us as if we're 5 years old and if someone asks a question he's kind of rude to them. There are quizzes every week which is ridiculous, I'd rather have a midterm. The TAs are basically your lifeline for this class.
He made the class interesting and doesn't go so slow that get bored. Definitely have to study for the exams but they're not impossible.
He's really nice and he wants his students to do well. He explains everything pretty well. I always go to class because his teaching is better than the textbooks explainations. DEFINITELY do the problem sets before each quiz, even if you do it on the morning of, it really helps!
I'm really not sure what all these people are talking about. first off, if you've never taken a stats class before good luck. He rushes everything hardly explains the slides or the computations. Gives you a review sheet with NO ANSWERS you HAVE to go to a TA in office hours to see if you're right. (most of the time they dont even know the answers)
Many students are confused in his Psy 201 class. He runs through slides and does not show how to do computations only on excel. so no one knows how to do the math
Great professor. There's a quiz every week and it's really easy to remember two days' worth of material. Sometimes, he even gives you the formulas. No homework, the final is optional and two lowest quizzes get dropped. I hated stat going in, but he made the subject okay.
VERY difficult exams. Class is based on level of attendance. You MUST be there EVERY lecture if you want to get a good grade.
This is one of my favorite classes here so far! Really interesting material, cool professor, and reasonable tests. Read the textbook, and go to class. He gives review right before the tests which are really helpful and there's extra credit as well. Loved the class.
You really need to know each chapter inside and out, the tests go into every corner of the material and you must be there during lecture to fully understand the ideas. There are test questions that refer to lecture discussion. His TA's are pretty helpful. Tests are worded a bit weird and questions can get confusing. There is no curve at all 79.9=C+
This is probably one of the best professors I have ever come across. He is so helpful, cares a lot about what he is teaching. The class is set up for students to learn and do well at the same time. There isn't that much work, but it does require some effort to do well. Take advantage of office hours and email. I suggest this professor greatly.
Great lecturer and very passionate about his work. Beware of weekly quizzes, they are easy to take but easy to mess up if you didn't study. Do the problem sets, but make sure you get the answers from the TAs or him if you don't understand the material. I bought the textbook but didn't use it once, you can get through with just studying the slides.
He doesn't do a good job of explaining material. What he tries to teach in 2 hrs can be better explained by a TA in 30 mins. In general, material is not hard, but not well explained. Just going to lecture will not suffice to get a good grade. Weekly quizzes w/ 2 dropped are 100% of your grade. Tests are tricky. Extra credit through experiments.
His lectures can be boring because I think he has a boring voice, the most excitement you get from the class is when he walks in because he comes down running. He's very energetic but does not explain topics well. His reviews are crap because he won't give you answers to his review questions. You have to rely on each other as colleagues.
There was three exams and one paper. No book just print outs that he would post after the lecture and no form of extra credit at all. he talks the entire time and doesnt answer questions.
I don't understand what the other people are talking about here. His class is really tough. There is a quiz every Friday so it is just impossible for me to study all the materials taught on Wednesday. He rushes too much that my friend in another section is a chapter behind us. If this is the first statistics class you take, just be prepared.
Professor Freitas is great! You can tell he's very passionate about what he teaches. Quiz every Friday (w/ 2 dropped) so he only has 2 classes to teach what's needed. This makes it seem like he's rushing (but it isn't THAT bad). Take it one week at a time, study the slides + problem sets and you'll be fine! (textbook not 100% needed)
Yes the class is difficult, but if you listen to him and study you can do well. He talks fast, but it's because there is a large amount of content to cover and he has to. He is very organized and very passionate. He really cares if you understand the content, so go to office hours.
Please avoid if possible! He makes the material so much more complicated than it has to be. He is terrible at presenting information. His material is just going over different studies. He doesn't apply anything to real world use and there is no book. Definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken at Stony Brook! Save your GPA and avoid!
Great professor!! Genuinely wants students to do well and loves his work. Lecture material is a little tough to grasp, but as long as you pay attention and take notes youll be fine! Tests are multiple choice and straightforward. Oh he also curves!
Prof. Freitas cares about his students, however the material can be difficult to grasp at times because the lectures can be unclear. If you're not a psychology student & just taking this for credit, the heavy psych jargon may confuse you being that he uses a ton of it during his lectures. Gives opportunity for extra credit each test. Fair overall.
The material is not always covered so well in class. He often just gives you the materials you need and wants you to get to the answer but doesn't really guide you through the process. He is a cool professor but the lectures aren't quite enough to do well on the quizzes.
Professor Freitas is so intelligent that sometimes it's hard for him to "dumb it down" for students. However, if you're complaining that this upper division psychology course has heavy psych jargon, you can't blame him; take another course. The studies he gives are hard to follow sometimes but meaningful. He will help you whenever he can. Nice guy!
The content in his lectures is exactly what shows up on the quizzes and the final is OPTIONAL. He can't really dumb things down, but the quizzes aren't cumulative so if you don't get material on a previous quiz you can just forget about it! He's really caring and genuinely wants you to understand the material; highly recommend!
Gives a quiz after two lectures each week. The things he explains in lecture are simple, and roughly explained. The practice tests ask things we never learned how to do, and don't explain any of the answers. Says mastery of quizzes will help us do well on the quizzes, which is complete bs.
his lectures don't really match up to what's on the quiz or study guide. The weekly quizzes are garbage because there's nothing else in place to help with your grades. Extra credit is worth one penny and it's ridiculous. He is lazy and doesn't do computations during lectures.
Idk what these other reviews are saying--he covered all the material needed for the week in 2 classes (and let us drop our 3 lowest quizzes, plus retake 2!), he gave us a study guide with answers that were very similar to the actual quizzes, he lets us have 4 possible points for extra credit, and he let us use notes on quizzes. Great professor.
I could not find PSY 348 available on the course code for the review so I am going to leave this in its place. This class feels like it over complicates things for no reason. He is a very smart man but the vocabulary he uses confuses more than half the class while he is going at a mile a a minute. It is very difficult to keep up with everything
He's a great guy but this class is really hard. The exam questions make you second guess yourself even if you have studied well. If you're not 100% committed, don't take this class.
I like his teaching style. He's very understanding of your situation and understanding. His quizzes can be worded weirdly, but that can be fixed by taking advantage of office hours, study guides, and textbooks.
He's honestly a great professor! He goes out of his way to help his students and is a very fair grader. Final was optional, and every Friday there is a small quiz. This is helpful as he drops the 2 lowest grades. Attendance doesn't count and he also makes study guides for every week with the answers!
Honestly, his class is exactly what you make of it there are weekly quizzes and the worst two get dropped. His quizzes can be tricky, but if you practice the computational problems and know the definitions, you'll do fine. He has an optional final you can take. Go to his office hours he wants to help.
The course relies on quizzes, with only two dropped, disadvantaging poor test takers. Study guides rarely match the quizzes, and lectures are fast-paced and confusing. Content often doesn't align with assessments, creating frustration. Studying for the final is unclear, stressful, and doesn't prepare students effectively
Other than the grading criteria being solely on weekly quizzes, Professor Freitas does an excellent job in teaching. He posts the lecture slides for every class a week beforehand so if you have to miss a class, you won't be too far behind. Also, the weekly quizzes are supplemented with study guides that he gives the answers to every week.
He teaches decently well and as long as you're in class you're able to understand the material. I missed many classes so I didn't do as well on the weekly quizzes but he isn't bad as long as you go to the lectures and take your notes.
