A good professor. Class was extremely easy if you put in the time to read the book.
Read the book. Go to lecture. You'll do fine. His cool accent and jokes make the class enjoyable.
Extremely unhelpful to struggling students. More interested in weeding students out than helping them understand the material.
His tests DO NOT come from lecture...so u have to read the book :-(
Going to lecture was pointless. His tests are pretty hard and specific.
Very unclear. I understand that for gen bio you have to test on certain things, but his teaching was very poor.
Not that good of a teacher. Lots of lewd comments and tries to make jokes that arent funny. Doesnt seem to care about helping his students. Very tough course...just read the book cover to cover.
He's funny and while some of the lectures are boring most are helpful. The tests are hard though and you really have to study.
See comment from 12/9/03- describes him perfectly. Biology is not a hard subject, it's all memorization. Dr. Dean is just there to lecture at you hoping it will help.
He was funny and the tests weren't bad, although he went a little fast on the powerpoints sometimes.
I enjoyed his class, and thought he made the subject interesting. He has a very sarcastic sense of humor. He gives multiple-choice tests which are fairly easy (if you keep up with the reading and terminology), and focus on the concepts. He gives pop quizzes. My only complaint is the lab section is a worthless thing run by undergrad TAs.
Great teacher. His lectures were understandable and clear and he is funny as hell. Great sense of humor, I don't get the comment complaining about his "lewd jokes."
Lectures we fine, tests had information on it that I didn't evfen know to study. No study guides or anything, claims to just look at lecture slides - but that isn't enough. the detail of the slides is minimum compared to what he expects you to know. his jokes are okay, but the tests.. he just expects too much for what he gives you.wouldnt recommend
Professor Dean always made lectures worth coming to. He wasn't very helpful with studying for tests, though. I went to class, read the book, did my labs, and I still didn't know what I was doing wrong. Overall, I really expected the difficulty lecture. I think my general incompetence in class made me dislike him a bit more than I should have.
This class was quite difficult for a basic biology course. I felt as though I had to teach myself the whole way through. The lectures had minimal content that doesn't really help for the tests. As much as I would've like to skip the lectures, there are lecture quizzes every now and then, so beware.
For some reason I did not like Professor Dean that much. He was funny but did not use a microphone and I found it hard to pay attention for 1.5 hours. His slides are clear but he does move fast sometimes and tests can be difficult. I read the book and went to lecture but still managed to not do awesome on the tests. He is not too helpful.
Agree that lectures are useless. He gets off track and is very unclear about which information is useful and which isn't. Also, 90% of the time he doesn't explain concepts, he just talks about their applications, making it impossible to understand. Just try to get general words from what he is saying and then go over the concepts in the book.
This is a difficult class, and you HAVE to read the textbook to do well. Professor Dean makes the concepts seem more difficult than they actually are in my opinion. But it helps a lot to read the book before going to lecture. He's a funny guy, and even put a decent curve on the class at the end of the semester, even though he said he wouldn't.
If you do what is expected of you and read the text before class, lectures are very helpful to understand the material. Sit near the front of the lecture hall and ask questions during and after class, Dr. Dean is very willing to further clarify and explain concepts. Tests are challenging but manageable if you keep up and study.
I loved this class. Dean was constantly funny, but also very informative. He kept me entertained, and it was his teaching personality that kept me coming back to lectures (and the pop quizzes, of course). Very willing to offer help to anyone willing to ask for it - a great professor overall. I would definitely recommend taking any of his courses.
Very tough class. I found Dean's Biol 1009 to be more difficult than Organic Chemistry at the U of M.
Great professor, always keeps the class light and fun with his jokes, but explains everything very well. He has in class quizzes that pop up randomly, so you can't really skip lecture, but i personally read the book because it goes into more depth than his lectures and I ended up doing fine in the course. Recommend for sure
I have no idea where I would have been without the textbook. Prof. Dean was honestly no help and didn't clear up things. READ the textbook, do the questions in the book, google quizzes and pray that you'll do good. Thank God I got a good grade but really taught myself the course material.
The main thing to do is READ THE TEXTBOOK and do practice quizzes that he does not provide. My recommendation is to google "Campbell 7th Edition Quizzes" and do the quizzes for each Ch. Take my advice and this class should be relatively easily. The professor himself is alright, cracks lots of joke and lectures are pretty much mandatory.
In general, you have to go to lecture and read the textbook. He has pop quizzes in lecture and he posts his slides online but the majority of the slides are just pictures with no explanation. He tried to tell a lot of jokes during lecture to make it more interesting but sometimes it was just awkward.
Fun guy if you like dry humor, but lectures are boring unless you are really interested in the stuff. Textbook is a great resource. I got more out of the textbook than the lectures.
He is from England so the accent was cool. He makes a lot of lame jokes, but they made the class more bearable. Also, he wears shirts to almost every class with different funny sayings on them. He likes to talk about failing students a lot, though.
his jokes are awful. Always talks about failing students and asking if you failed the pop quiz and getting excited. It's like beating a dead horse, joking or not it gets annoying, does it all semester. The pop quizes are based on the book 100% Could pass this class with the book alone cause you don't learn much in lecture
Pretty rough overall. His lectures were okay but notes were very scatterbrained and impossible to go over later/use for review. Thought is was hilarious that the class average was so low. Didn't have office hours and wasn't available for extra help.
Pop quizzes given in beginning of class. Dry sense of humor, towards students and drinking. Loves his prokaryotes. Do well in lab, to succeed. Every point matters so do well on pre-lab, in-class, and major lab quizzes! Not my most enjoyable professor, but at least I can understand him and he is knowledgeable. He has "some" heart
Dr. Dean is really funny. His shirts are really funny. His lectures, though packed with confusing information, are really funny. This being said, this class is HARD. You must stay on top of readings and lectures. There are no given study guides, and I would recommend quizzing yourself periodically. Good luck, but enjoy.
Professor Dean was extremely hard to learn from. His lectures include information that is way more in depth than you would ever need to know for the class, and his pop quizzes consist of three extremely hard questions. Got one wrong? That sucks because now you just got a D. You pretty much have to read the textbook and teach yourself the topics.
This class had two lectures, and he covered the first half of the semester. My grades and understanding of material struggled while he was professor in this class. Tests were very difficult, and I do not feel that his lectures helped much to prepare for the tests. He was an entertaining and fun, but (unfortunately) those things do not boost my GPA.
I wish I could skip lectures and take that time to read the text book on my own. Pop quizzes in class so lecture mandatory. I find him funny but that doesnt help my grade. He tells people to just study slides for exams. Do that and youll fail. I havent learned anything from him, only the book and online resources. Good luck, youll need it.
If you get Dean highly recommended switching to another section. Does not teach you in an understandable way and has really hard quizzes each class that basically everyone gets a D on. Gives you absolutely no materials to go off. My grade was terrible the whole time he taught. Scott is a saving grace and the only reason anyone passes that class.
Though he is entertaining and fun like most others have said I didn't learn much from him. This class covers everything I was taught in high school yet for some reason I have a D, like most people in my class. It is very tough and I hope to come out with a C- or higher
Had him for BIOL 1009. Lectures are very vague with an ordinate focus on comedy. Quizzes are difficult: 3 questions, so getting one wrong is an automatic D. Funny, but ultimately unhelpful. Exams are hard with a D average.
His slideshows can be an overwhelming amount of information, especially to take in early in the morning. But his tests are definitely taken directly from them. This class is much more CONCEPTUAL than vocab memorization. I found the most helpful thing was to do the textbook multiple choice problems and really study his slides.
At first, I thought Dean was going to be funny, but his humor got really old really fast. His lectures were super fast and very intense, and he wasn't always super clear on topics, and what we actually needed to know. He gave way too much information in his lectures.
He provides absolutely no test prep materials, so knowing what to study is somewhat a mystery. The pop quizzes are extremely difficult and you only have 3 minutes to take them, one answer wrong and you're at a D. He jokes a lot about failing students, which would be funnier if it didn't actually seem like this was his goal. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Lectures are just reading off slides word for word. In class quizzes with 3 Qs worth 18 points, so getting a question wrong has a significant impact. Tests tend to have some very specific, nitpicky recall type questions. Spends a lot of time joking about drinking and failing his students, which would be funny if the lectures weren't terrible
Professor Dean is a very funny and charismatic guy, making pretty good jokes and remarks. He also cares for his students. On the lecture side, however, his teaching is very cursory and if you want to do well in the class, you will need to read the book. Much of the midterm content was either glossed over in lectures or not covered. Class is curved.
Science isn't my best subject, but he made it enjoyable with his occasional banter. It's clear he cares about his students because he would reassure us abt grading on exams and also clued us in on the fact that the questions on the weekly quizzes are from the same question bank the exam questions are drawn from. As long as u pay attn, you'll be ok.
He was an AWFUL professor who put far too much information on his powerpoint slides and his lectures made absolutely no sense. I would absolutely recommend finding another professor.
So bad. If you're good at bio and can pull info from the textbook, prepare to snore your way to an A. If not, good luck. Completely inept, boring, and muddled lectures. Understands biology but sadly incapable of explaining it to another person. Go for the pop quizzes, then pop in headphones and read the chapter. Take questions to the TAs.
He was not a helpful professor at all. All his slides are pictures, which makes it hard when studying for tests. I would use the book for studying because his lectures don't make sense. He also jokes about failing students a lot, which gets old fast. From how hard his tests are, it doesn't seem like a joke. Take a different professor if you can.
You don't have to go to lecture that often so long as you keep up with the material. Would recommend just reading the chapters in the textbook and taking detailed notes. His slides aren't very helpful seeing as their just pictures and his exams are hard and he does that on purpose, but there's a curve which helps a lot. Make sure to read the book!!
Very charismatic and enthusiastic guy, and seems totally cool the first couple weeks of class. However, his lectures soon become extremely long and packed with info. Gives extremely hard midterms with the class average being around 65%. Lab work is pretty easy and is where you have to work to get at least a C. Great guy, not so great professor.
Professor Antony's lectures were very unappealing, and I at times found myself dozing off during lectures. He could work on being more engaging. If anything, make sure you put the time outside of class to absorb the material from the textbook that he goes over the lectures. Lab was easy as all you had to do was participate and do the pre-labs.
Prof Dean literally said in class that his average is a 65% and the biology department's average for BIOL 1009 is a 75%, so he has to curve his BIOL 1009, that's how hard his class is. He goes so fast in lectures you can't keep up with notes. Working extra hard in the lab and the curve at the end of the class saved my grade.
He is very funny, but the class was very challenging. If you are usually not good in science, this class will be very challenging. The labs were pretty easy. HE CURVES YOUR GRADE AT THE END. Dr. Antony Dean answered ALL of the questions students had. He is pretty cool. No lecture notes, if you want to really understand lecture, read the textbook.
Fun and energetic guy. He knows what he is talking about. Lectures move a little fast but as long as you go to lectures and read the text you should be fine for the tests. Not too difficult but also not that easy. A moderate challenge.
If you dont need this class as a pre req, do NOT take it. Dean is a terrible professor and clearly only here for research. This class requires an insane amount of reading and taking notes on lectures but the weekly quizzes arent on anything in the book or his lectures, so good luck. The midterms are also extremely hard and his jokes get old fast
Prof. Dean is a nice guy and really funny, except his jokes about everyone failing actually come true. The test questions are so specific, but based on so much information, there's really no way to study or do well. His lectures are really bad, don't explain anything clearly, and are not even worth watching (just read the book and watch youtube)
Do not take Professor Dean. He is very sarcastic and his humor gets very old very fast. The exams are very nit picky and super detailed and the study guide has little to no detailed information that helps. READ the textbook because I could not watch the lectures. Look over his slides because it can help with exams. One of the worst profs.
Dean is the worst. If you can avoid taking 1009 with him, dont. His lectures are incredibly unhelpful and vague, and half the time the info doesnt apply to the tests or quizzes. The textbook also sucks but reading it is a necessity to pass. Tests are horrible since the questions are mostly applied knowledge, so just memorizing wont be enough.
I loved his lectures. He is really funny and enjoyable to learn in his environment. His lectures can sometimes struggle with connecting everything together but besides that I really enjoyed his class! The first and second units are the most difficult and don't get scared!
This class was very stressful. There is so much material in the textbook that you see only on the quizzes. I ended up using Quizlet during the quizzes. The tests are very hard and only encompass concepts on the ppts provided. It is a very weird setup. Try not to take this class if you can help it! I don't believe it's the teacher's fault though.
Dean is not the best professor, his lectures are very detailed, boring & long. Everything on the test is from his lectures tho so sitting thru them is mandatory. Reading the textbook is useless don't waste your time on it. He lies about curves the grade you get is what you get. If you watch and take notes on the pdf of lectures, you will do decent
Dean is one of the worst profs i've had. I stopped going to lectures after the third week when I found out that going to them really won't help your grade at all. There are pretty much only three tests that will make up most of your grade, and they're all extremely hard and specific, so there's no good way to study for them. Avoid this class!!
Good luck if you end up with Dean... He is really tough and I'm literally typing this in the middle of his lectures. The exams are overly difficult and his lectures aren't very helpful in my opinion. There is a lot of details in the readings too that is mandatory to know to pass. The class average for the first midterm was 65%...
His lectures are hard to follow. From what I can tell, a lot of my class finds them super unhelpful. He seems to take some pride in the fact that his class is at a C/D average? I understand that college is supposed to be hard but I feel like there should be more concern if there's a widespread lack of understanding. Uncomfortable jokes, avoid.
I do not recommend taking Biology with Dean. He seems to take pride in his students getting C/D and wants his students to fail. His lectures are boring and hard to follow and the test questions do not follow the lectures or the textbook. Additionally, he does not open the biweekly quizzes in order to get feedback. Avoid if possible.
I do not recommend this prof at all. Exams are lecture heavy, but lectures are extremely unorganized. Seems to take pride in giving students Cs or Ds, "jokes" about it quite often. I ignored the warnings on here when I signed up for this course, but now I understand why ratings are so low. Avoid!
First midterm had an average grade of 57%, and Dr. Dean said that there is no way that the tests will be curved. Nothing on the lectures are in the mcgraw homework, nothing from mcgraw is on the test(s). The labs will save your grade, so study study study! for the pre and major lab quizzes. If you can take this class w a differernt prof. please do.
AVOID!!! The lectures are extremely un-engaging and very unhelpful. First class average mid-term was a 57%... that should tell you enough. He definitely seems to take pride in having his classes be a C/D average and he jokes about it often. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND CHOOSE ANOTHER PROF. Just horrible.
Dr. Dean bothers me because his lectures are all over the place, his slides are just full of pictures so it's hard to follow and every class he is broad. The lectures do not help with the tests as they are super specific. The homework is a waste of time since you don't really learn a lot and it is not relevant to the tests much. I wouldn't take him
Antony Dean is a very lecture-heavy professor. But, the topics you are lectured on are rarely seen on the exams given. I sent him a few emails during the semester and his responses took about a week to receive and they were very basic responses.
I cannot say enough bad things about Dr. Dean. He thinks he's hilarious, which he is not, and his lectures are almost impossible to sit through. Almost everyone I talk to doesn't even bother going to the lectures as they are that uninformative. If there is any, ANY other professor available, please take them instead.
Dr. Dean was nothing special, just another professor who did not care. He also said the class average on a midterm was 68% and that was the best he ever had. He is very funny.
My comment keeps getting deleted, but I have time for Antony Dean. Again, I reported him to the EOAA, and they acted on his discrimination. If anyone is concerned he is discriminating, please report him,
Professor Dean thinks he's the funniest dude in the world, which couldn't be further from the truth. Lectures are bland, and the average score on each midterm has been
Lectures are a waste of time, reads off the slides word for word and adds in irrelevant things. McGraw Hill assignments every class become repetitive. Exams do not really correlate to lecture or online assignments. He is not easily accessible outside of class. He says he likes to see people do bad in the class. If you take, be willing to study lots
In the 4 years that I have been at the U, I have not had a professor as awful as Antony Dean. He is blatantly disrespectful to his students and genuinely finds joy in his student's failing. When a student asked if they should drop the class to meet graduation requirements, Dean quite literally laughed at them and said he hoped most people fail.
Has a fun accent and likes to make jokes. He presented a lot of the math involved with the genetics aspect of evolution in an awful way. I was in genetics when taking the class so had a better understanding from that. He is not very interactive with students. His method of teaching is very hard to follow and left a lot of students confused.
I am in my last year here at the U, and I have never had a professor as bad as Antony Dean. Currently, as I am typing this our average grade is around a C+ for an introductory Evolution course. Dean is disrespectful to the students; he cares very little about our grades or how we feel; and he does not communicate with the other professor.
Not going to lie, this was one of the most poorly taught classes I have ever been in. Antony Dean openly wished for us to fail exams and was an awful lecturer. Even for an evolution class, I was more confused walking out of that class then before. There was no clear grading rubric, no resources to help us succeed, and the grades were posted late.
AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. He is disrespectful to the students, makes inappropriate sexual comments in class, and laughs at students' concerns and shortcomings in his class. This is the hardest class I've taken at the U because of the instructors. He refused to provide study materials to help students with exams or assignments.
Mr. Dean is the worst professor I've had in my four years of college. He had no care for students success and laughed when students were failing. His lecture slides were a train wreck and he's a horrible teacher. Professor Shaw taught with him and was the only reason I passed the class. Prioritize doing well in lab and on problem sets.
All the reviews are true, please, please do not take this professor. First of all, he is not going to help you learn your course material. Point blank his lecturing and all the materials he provide are terrible and don't apply to exams or assignments. Secondly and almost more importantly, he loves being extremely disrespectful and insensitive.
He was an absolute fever dream. How he is still working here is comedic.
Read directly off slides, obviously knowledgeable, but took pride in the high failure rate of his class. Told us to study for midterms with alcohol, and never responded to my email detailing my accommodations with the Disability Resource Center.
