This is the only class this semester in which I feel I'm getting a real university education. Dr. Hascall is always fully prepared, extremely thorough, very organized, never skips around or misses info. When he asks if there are questions he actually sees the hands raised. He also stops by every lab period to check on us and the TA, too. Well done.
A good professor, but extremely boring. He is pretty organized, but I'm telling you, it is definitely no fun going to his class.
I never liked chemistry to begin with, but now I absolutely HATE it!!!! His class his hard, and for those who have zero interest in chem its hard to keep up. The average for his tests and quizzes is a C. will ask the class if anyone has any questions then immediatly look down or turn around. GO TO SI SESSIONS
Not good at all. Whenever he was asked a question after class, he would react as though he was personally offended that he wasn't understood during the lecture. Very unapproachable, and scowled when he was asked question during class as well. Quiz every week. Tests were very difficult, however you were given partial credit for showing work.
horrible teacher runs through stuff really fast ahead of most chem teachers and socially awkward.
He left the last 3 weeks of the semester and our class was really lost. Good thing the teacher that took over for him was helpful! Hascall was smart but he rushes through a lot of stuff and for notes he scribbles on the white board
Great teacher! He really knows what he talking about. He isn't a very approachable guy but if you summon the courage to go to his office hours or ask a question in class he has no problem answering any question. Ive heard mixed reviews about him but i really appreciated his wealth of knowledge on the subject.
He is really nice. A little lost looking, but good professor. Go to his recitations...it helps for his quizes and exams.
easy A
Holy moly, this class was really difficult for me. For my personal learning, he wasn't very clear. He goes through the material very quickly, so attending study sessions is a must. Although I would never say he's my favorite, I would definitely say that he is the smartest man I've ever met. He knows EVERYTHING and he's kind, but he won't round up.
This class was kind of difficult. He rushes though a lot of material and the mastering chemistry homework was pretty hard. The SI sessions saved me because he isn't very clear when he explains the material.
He is definitely not one of my favorite teachers. He?s a nice enough guy and easy to talk to, but his classes are super boring and he doesn?t explain the material well at all. If you take him you?ll probably end up having to teach yourself. He writes stuff on the board and expects you to understand it without explaining it.
Unsure if its cause I'd just taken chem in high school prior, but I really enjoyed his class & I like his teaching method. He's very clear & gives interesting examples. I think some people feel he doesn't like answering questions cause he's curt but I think its either a)nervous energy or b)he's in a hurry. Handwriting can be hard to read sometimes.
sorry, I forgot to say, SI Sessions for me were kind of mandatory. I went regularly. Recitations as well. Nearly got an A in the class but I focused on other classes during finals week. Wish I could have taken him for chm152 but I could only find a morning class.
Couldn't sit through a single class without falling asleep. Read the book religiously and you can get away with a B. Very scattered style of teaching.....ferris beuler voice.
He's a difficult teacher, and lectures make you sleepy, but he teaches all the cocepts well.
Worst teacher at NAU. Not helpful, taking notes is a pain since he has the worst handwriting and writes it all on the board. Take someone else!!!
I was lost 98% of the time, and I'm not one to really struggle in class, first C, in my life! He expects you to know fundamentals right from the start and seems to feel everyone was born with a firm grasp on complex chemistry concepts. All I can say is SI sessions, as well as understanding Mastering Chemistry concepts.. Goodluck!
Alot of independent study required, lectures move pretty fast, but is fine because the class overall is VERY easy, exams are MUCH easier than the homework, wch is also easy
Mr. Hascall gives plenty of helpful examples in class, and has great recitation handout/study guides. However, I didn't find his approach to teaching the concepts to be effective and I ended up learning from the book and going to SI sessions. He's also not very personable. Not bad, but I wouldn't recommend.
You pretty much have to teach yourself this class. He doe not have good organization within his lesson. Most importantly he does not know how to communicate the lesson with others.
This guy doesn't know what the hell he's talking about! Clicker questions, Why. Want to know your grade in this class?? Sucks to suck, you'll never know! Why? Because hascall still hasn't master basic algebra... Does he even have a chemistry degree? No but really, I want to see him take his own exam... Got a question for him? Hahaha good joke!
Not sure if it was the teacher or the fact it was a summer class, but this class was hard. Very nice guy and extremely smart. But ironically, the spring/fall semesters had far easier exams than the condensed summer exams. Clearly explains all concepts up until reactions, then we just rushed through it so fast everyone got lost. Good prof otherwise.
This professor is not too bad. He is a really nice guy;however, he isn't very clear sometimes. I would take his recitation because it is very helpful.
While taking this course, I felt Dr. Hascall's class was difficult. Attendance is mandatory, and I would highly recommend enrolling in recitation and going to SI. Do not skip homework assignments, as they are crucial for doing well on exams.
Dr. Hascall was the best Chemistry teacher I have ever had. His lectures are detailed, thorough, and he's always there to help you. Attendance is mandatory to passing this class and make sure you keep up with the reading and attend SI sessions and you will be golden.
Never puts up grades, so if you wanna know how much you need to get on a test to improve or keep your current grade, you're out of luck. Uses the flipped learning style, meaning you have to watch the pre-lectures and take the quizes on your own time before class. The problem? He's not clear, and you can't stop him to ask questions in a pre-lecture.
He is a terrible teacher. I highly suggest you do not take his class. His final's average is only a 50% that means half his class fails it and the rest of the class doesn't do much better! If your looking to tale a class that you want to repeat this is the class for you but otherwise stay clear. There are better chemistry teachers at NAU.
Literally put up grades today, the day before the final and has not explained any material all semester. SI sessions are a must, and they're extremely helpful. Read the book, but it is tough information to understand but if you take it to the SI or TA they can help you. He does offer extra credit if you answer all the clicker questions correctly.
Grades fairly and is clear on what is expected. Does things by the book.
Very intelligent and nice man. However, I'm not sure why he is a teacher. Least helpful teacher I've ever had and expects you to have a great understanding of chemistry prior to talking the class. He also talks very fast and his handwriting is nearly impossible to read. You have class 3 times a week for 50 minutes, and prelectures for 1 hr a week.
He is a nice man just a horrible teacher who is unclear in lecture and tests are hard. Most people in his class are going through it for the second time.
CHM151 should be taken with another professor. Having something to prove, Hascall spends his lectures talking down to the students with a general lack of respect for the class. Tests don't reflect the difficulty of the rest of the class. The HW a Quizzes are useless and relentless. Expensive mandatory online access. Can't approach outside of class.
He cannot explain the material to save his life. He is one of THOSE teachers that shows us the answer and expects us to know how he got to that answer. Not helpful at all. Would not take his class again.
This man can't explain things for his life. He's brilliant, but doesn't understand that you may have never seen this material before. Don't take his class if you want more than a C.
Dr. Hascall was a nice enough guy. The only problem I had was I couldn't stay engaged because of his monotone voice. Other than that, he gives you plenty of opportunities to learn the material. The material can be difficult if you have never taken a chemistry class before.
Good professor. Makes the material very clear and easy to understand.
love this man
Hybrid learning so you take notes at home. Gives worksheets during class. Test are not too hard, will help you if you ask him but I went to SI sessions for extra help.
Hascall is not a great teacher. He barely teaches and expects you to have prior knowledge of the information. He doesn't lecture in class but has lecture videos which are not helpful because you do not get the opportunity to ask questions. He has a worksheet every single class and does the problem without explaining how to do it.
Great guy and all but awful teacher. Doesnt lecture during class but instead makes online videos attempting to explain the concepts. Homework is awful, he used mindtap this term, one day he would assign 8+ homework assignments that can take hours and the next few days only assign 1-2 homeworks. Good guy and easy to talk to but awful professor.
I think he's a good guy, but the class is organized in a way you either love or hate. You learn via his prelecture videos and online homework, then do in-class problems, so there isn't much lecturing. He is good at explaining, but he makes you work for the answer first. It's a different style, but he's not a bad teacher.
He is incredibly difficult to learn through and doesn't include much from online homework. In fact he doesn't always have questions on exams that we went over at any point. It is essential to go to class not only to get participation points but to also learn what little he teaches since that's what will be on the exam. I used to love chemistry...
Though he may seem kind of dry and boring if you are not all that into chemistry, I would definitely recommend his class, a solid professor.
There is a lot of homework on this website MindTap and its always having problems. He can be very short at times and gets frustrated when all of his student email him about it (we just care about our grade) but other than that he's very mediocre. I didn't learn much from him, I learned more from the homework online.
This was the stereotypical massive lecture hall, person up front talking, unengaging sort of course. The bulk of the work is conducted through mindtap, a clonky and aggravating web interface. Furthermore, he keeps the online work locked, so working ahead is impossible, even though the assignments themselves really don't need lecture notes to do.
Solid choice for your professor. Gives you plenty of practice in the classroom. He is very friendly, welcoming and offers office hours as well as a recitation period were he goes over class materials a second time. But beware if you miss a day because you go over new material EVERY class and all of the material will be on the final.
Don't take chemistry 151 with this dude! Boring lectures and way to much online homework. He didn't teach me anything, I had to learn on my own and went to ever SI session. Some how averaged a 68% on all of the exams and still passed with a B. The only way I got a B was because test are only worth 50% of you grade. Worst professor I have ever had.
He was not a good teacher at all. He lectured on things that weren't on the test. He also had practice tests that were nothing like the real test. I ended with an 89.4 and he wouldn't round me up even though I did everything to do well in his class.
I always understand my classes so clearly. Not this class. You have to teach yourself literally everything. He will post his old exams as a study guide and only 30% of the questions will actually help you the rest will never be seen. I wouldn't wish this teacher upon my worst enemy. SWITCH CLASSES OR DROP FGS
He is great as a person but he only would give us worksheets during class to learn off of. He also would go into random topics and go way into depth that no one ever listened to. Chemistry tests are 20% of your grade so be aware
Dr. Hascall seems like he knows the material he is teaching but doesn't communicate it well to the students. Furthermore he is incredibly rude if you ask him for help. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you like sleeping through boring, monotonous lectures. Do yourself a favor and take Cruickshank.
Dr. Hascall knows what he is talking about but you need to be the one to listen and not fall asleep if you are an early class.
Professor Hascall was just okay. I think he really knew the material he was teaching, but I felt he was awkward when it came to teaching it. Also, the online homework through ALEKS is terrible.
Take his class if you like teaching everything to yourself. I spent way too much time each week doing online homework for this class, went to SI, attended every lecture, but still managed to bomb half the tests. He isn't helpful even if you go to him one on one. Plus the "old exams" he shows you are nothing like what you actually end up seeing.
Dr. Hascall's class is one of the most difficult classes you can take, however I feel his class is very beneficial. Dr. Hascall makes you EARN your grades. I've spent a lot of time going to SI sessions, office hours, TA office hours, and studying in order to get a good grade in his class. If you don't put in the effort then you won't pass.
Get participation points in class through Iclickers. Attendance is taken each class period and is very important as it is taken through in-class quizzes. ALEKS is the devil and very important to finish. Tests are really difficult and he is a tough grader on the non-multiple choice parts. Gives feedback though on the tests.
Hascall is an awkward teacher, you can tell he knows the information but he has trouble teaching it. There's a ton of homework on ALEKS but make sure you do it because it's a big part of your grade. Exams are pretty hard so solid study sessions are needed to pass them. His lectures can be really boring but you need to attend for points.
Dr. Hascall isnt that bad. His lectures sometimes got kinda boring. He gives extra credit in participation points so if you miss a couple classes it wont kill you but try not to miss any if you can. You learn most of the material by yourself through videos so if that doesnt work for you then dont take him. DONT BUY THE BOOK. YOU DONT NEED IT.
Hascall talks a lot and does not always get straight to the point, but when he finally gets there his explanations make a lot of sense. He also makes your daily quizzes straight from the pre-lecture videos which is amazing. Some people complain about these but I honestly learned so much from them and they set me up to do well in the class.
I did not think the class was hard, I just wish that he had taken more time to lecture some of the material. He enjoys giving out worksheets instead of teaching specific material. In addition, the homework on Sapling sometimes did not offer much in learning and was just another source of busy work. He seems to be trying his best, but I'm not for it
Socially awkward, yet funny. He's not a jerk and provides some homework and online quizes. Not a bad teacher at all.
I took Mr. Hascall last semester. He was not a bad teacher personality wise. Academic wise he was horrible. He would never lecture on things in class. Everything in his class was online. We had pre-lecture quizzes and then given worksheets to work on the rest of class. I had to drop it because I could not grasp the material. DON'T take him
reverse classroom
This professor was not the best at making sure that everyone was understanding everything that he was teaching... it was like he just wanted to get out the information instead of making sure that everyone understood what was being taught. I would never take this professor again. He would instead of lecturing would make videos to teach us material.
Everything is online including what's done in class (tests are the only exception). If your learning style is getting lectured and taking notes based off the lecture, this is NOT the professor for you. Tests can be hard if you're not prepared. His recitation that he does twice a week is more helpful than the actual lecture.
Honestly one of the worst professors I've ever had. Doesn't lecture in a lecture class. Half the class could fail the exam and he wont bother to curve it. Take any other professor if possible.
During lecture, everyone around me just complained about the class the entire time instead of listening, and consequently failed the exams. If you stay up to date with the online work, participate in class, you will get an easy A. I promise. He's great at explaining and he's always willing to answer your question/go through a problem again/help you
If you ask a question he wont answer it, he will simply tell you that you should have done the reading. Lectures were a joke, he didnt teach anything and all we did in class was the online Chem 101 work that would mark you wrong for every little mistake. I am good at science yet I can truthfully say that he was the worst teacher Ive had
His class is basically online. He uses Chem 101 in class and assigns timed assignments and talks while you're trying to work and if you listen to him, you'll probably be timed out on the assignment. He does provide many resources before exams which is helpful but if you don't do the online assignment you will fail. Try to get another professor.
Professor Hascall is the furthest thing from a professor Ive had in all of college. While strictly relying on the internet to teach his students, all Hascall does is assign online homework and scoffs at you when you ask questions in class. Dude is a world class goof that talks in monotone and only cares about chemicals (hes part of the corrupt).
Hascall is very computer heavy but as long as you read and take notes on the material, in class activities will make sense and be easier. His class is set up for you to prep yourself before coming in then he will lecture and give activities for you to practice. By putting in the time you will do well on the tests and in turn do well in the class.
Lectures are usually hard to be engaged with, his teaching style isn't particularly special and is mostly online. Exams and quizzes are relatively easy but you need to study and do the homework to do well on them. Overall a pretty "meh" class.
Dr. Hascall was the worst professor I have ever had. He expects freshmen level students to simply "teach themselves" by reading a textbook and coming to class each day to have quizzes over it. He does not lecture. If you are a visual learner or need examples do not take his class. He doesn't care about his students. He even lost one of my exams.
Never take this prof. ALL THE WORK IS ONLINE AND YOU JUST TEACH YOURSELF. You come to class and do practice problems. He talks about it before you do them, then the whole time you're doing them, then talks about them when you finish. What could've taken 10 minutes takes a least 45. He's extremely long winded and coming to class feels like a waste.
Dont take this class . Its all online the teacher expects you to come in the first day as a chemistry expert... he doesnt teach
although not the best experience, it wasn't bad! the class is designed so that you learn by watching lecture videos on your own, then come to class for practice problems. if you're down with that, then this is an okay class! not very inspirational and a lot of work but thats just cuz its intro to chem
Hascall is absolutely the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire schooling experience. He does not teach any of the material and expects you to have mastered it by the time you come to class. It is very difficult to grasp any of the material, and the fast pacing means it is very difficult to fall behind. Take anybody else instead.
I personally enjoyed his teaching. I get people's issue with the online lectures, but I feel like if you keep up with the work he prepares you well for the exams. The online lectures aren't too bad and I appreciated the class time to work on practice problems so you are well prepared for the tests. He's a good teacher so give the format a chance.
The class I take now has two lectures a week, and we have to do several readings and at least one assignment prior to every lecture, along with a weekly homework and weekly quiz. During the lectures, he mostly just assigns work and exemplifies the math within the subject. He rarely explains the why behind concepts and provides little direct help.
Dont like this professor, missed an assignment and he was no help at all. If you ever miss an assignment or quiz, theres no chance you'll be able to make it up. His test questions are harder than other professors at nau in chm 151. I recommend changing professors.
WORST professor I have ever taken. Super not helpful with understanding the materials. You have to do the assignments before class and teach them to yourself and then go to class and get quizzed on them. I struggle a lot with chem and he made it 1000 times worse. Definitely go with a different professor.
By far one of the worst professors I've had and he doesn't really help you understand the material you just have to take notes before class and pretty much have to teach yourself the content. Not very friendly and doesn't really care.
The absolute worst professor I have ever had. He cannot teach for the life of him and he doesn't care. The average was 62.2 for a test and he said oh well! When the tests are worth 56% of our grade. You read for hw and rush to finish and class is so many chem 101 problems everyone is just trying to keep up with him, not actually learning.
Professor Hascall gives a ton of homework. I would work either every day or every other day, and on weekends! Skipping class directly affects your grades. His lectures over zoom are fast, but if you do the homework, take notes, do the asynchronous lectures, you will do just fine in the class. Very helpful when studying during office hours with him!
hard tests, doesnt teach
I took the class twice. First time I failed on my own accord. I was very done with the class and didnt want to deal with it anymore. However, I thought it was easy so I retook it with Hascall. I had an A up until the final exam and then dropped to a C because he had refrained from putting months of homework/quizzes in. I had no idea.
He is easily the worst teacher Ive ever had. He doesnt lecture during lectures. He just assigns you a bunch of practice problems on Chem101. The format for the exams is also awful- whats the point of memorizing elements if youre going to use made-up elements on the exam? Do yourself a favor and take any other professor.
I was worried about this class, but Dr. Hascall was amazing. His homework was straightforward and there was MUCH opportunity to get help through SI, recitation, and office hours. His class is mostly practice problems. Just do your homework and go to recitation- great class. Changed my minor to chem! Grade dependent on exams.
Doesn't accept late work and for COVID assigned homework on like four different sites, and only updated the grade book at midterms. Incredibly hard and inflexible.
You have to watch the lectures outside of class and do practice problems during the lecture. Some may like this, some may not. He gives lots of study materials for tests (he posts exams from previous years and a study guide). Tests are worth a lot which is fine if you're a good test taker. Online quizzes and 2-3 homework assignments a week
Overall a really bad teacher. Only assigned chem 101 work during class and never actually lectured. Doesnt give any extra credit assignments or quizzes like most of the other chemistry teachers. Your main overall grade depends on three exams and there is no make up or redo. Didn't learn anything in the class to help for these exams.
if you can teach yourself chemistry youll be fine. otherwise, itll be a hard class. he expects you take notes and use online homework to teach yourself and then come to class to practice rather than learn. -side note- i found his voice irritating and he constantly talked the entire class.
DrHascall is great, anyone here that is blaming him for poor teaching probably just isn't great at Chemistry, and didn't read or do the homework. If you go to class, do the homework and put any amount of effort into the reading. Its not hard. He quite literally gives practice tests to do at home that are almost EXACTLY the same thing as the tests.
Exams are worth a lot of your grade so if you dont do well on one exam, it may be hard to bring your grade back up. It is advised to take good notes with the prelecture videos, but even then I still had to watch other chemistry youtube videos from other people to understand the content. I dont prefer the teaching style. I passed but it was difficul
Very tough advanced class. You have to learn on your own and then participate in practice problems in class. He drops low grades at the end of the semester though.
Although I did like his method of teaching this course, it was very heavy on the homework. What upset me the most about this course was that he continued lecturing and giving us work on reading week instead of helping us study for the final. Overall it was very material heavy and you kind of have to teach yourself everything.
Dr. Hascall is a pretty good professor. He posts past exams and their answers which are almost identical to the exam you will be taking. Participation in class is just completing the practice problems given in class. Readings are encouraged but the pre-lecture videos have the same effect just not as in-depth. Just do the work and you'll be fine.
I had Dr. Hascall for CHM 151 and 350. I wasn't a fan of him in 151, but I thought he was great for 350. His lectures are very informative and he always answers questions well, it's easy to make an appointment for office hours, and although the content was difficult he made it understandable. All grades are quizzes and tests, no mandatory homework.
I want to clarify that this is not personal but more as a caution. This class is taught poorly in my opinion with little in-depth explanation/ poor answers to questions. The exams make up basically your entire grade (over 50%) and the study material to be very misleading. I would not suggest this professor unless you are ok teaching yourself.
No lecture during class, only brief overviews. Prepare to learn this material via online textbook on your own. Exams make up most of your grade. Lectures consist of doing problems on activchem and code given everyday for attendance so make sure you show up. VERY frustrating and mentally draining.
Doesn't give extra credit, doesn't explain topics that well and answers questions by just restating what he had just said without explaining more. Do not take his class if you are a slower note taker as he does not wait and talks fast.
Do. Not. Take. Him. I was given this professor after my first professor (Rellaford) left to have her baby. He rushed through the slides and skips the examples. Instead of explaining how to solve the problems, he rushed through them with no explanation. Take Rellaford instead she is way better.
DO. NOT. TAKE. HIM. The TA was the only clear one in that class. He says so little in so many words. You learn outside of class and are given very little supplementation in class. The tests are stupidly hard(especially exam 3) and if you don't already naturally understand the topic, don't expect over a D on a test.
Very homework heavy and is horrible at explaining concepts.
Doesn't lecture. Closes attendance before class. 6+ assignments a week. 2 Homework assignments due on Thanksgiving. In-class exams. Opens attendance questions right a minute before the end of class and expects us to do it then closes it. Homework due the day before exams and quizzes due the day after.
There is lots of pre-lecture work every day that is due before class, but not for exam days. He does walk through some practice questions for every topic, but I would recommend you pay attention cause he goes over a lot in just one class. Also, and I cannot stress this enough, GO TO THE SI SESSIONS. They are the only reason why I passed this class.
A lot of work due before every class, as well as weekly homework and quizzes. You're expected to learn mostly from the pre-lecture readings/quizzes, in-class is more of a review/practice with topics. Provides a lot of review materials, practice exams, and covered everything on the exams in class. Recitation and SI sessions are very helpful.
He is not a good explainer and makes chemistry even more difficult than it already is. He was a sub in for my class and he messed up the flow of the lecture and class overall. He would go over lectures and would never make sense even when asked questions. He has no empathy for students who are struggling. If you have him, good luck.
Most of the content was online and done by yourself, lectures were just review of the lesson learned in the online homework. Overall, this class wasn't hard and I think this professor is rated too low
I did not like this class. Extremely difficult for a level 100 class. Way too much homework. We learned on our own at home, and he expected us to come to class knowing everything. I once emailed him with a question and he gave me an answer that did not help at all and was not what I had asked for. He did not care when the exam average was 62.
I put in hours of studying for this class and pulled multiple all nighters in preparation for tests and the highest score I received on one was an 80. Multiple people that I know failed this course. Hours of reading and note taking. Nothing is taught in the lectures. If you do not understand one concept, you are lost for the rest of the semester.
The class average for the first exam was 58% and he said he wasn't sure why
HE DOESN'T TEACH!!!!! If I wanted to teach myself everything, I would've taken this course ONLINE. After the first exam this man said "The average was a 60%. I'm not sure why it's that low..." LIKE I WONDER WHY??????
DO NOT take his class. This man does not know how to teach Chm 151. I had an institutional excuse because I lost a family member, and this man did not give a single crap. I have never withdrawn from a class before; this man broke that streak. If you are already locked to this course, good luck. Read everything, take notes on everything, and STUDY.
You have to do the pre class material so you can come to class and ask questions and do practice work. If you actually put in effort and care, you will understand the content. You actually have to spend time studying and working on the content if you want a good grade. It is a chemistry class, he is not just going to hand out grades.
I thought he was a pretty good professor. I disliked the class itself and having to do the prelecture activities is pretty much how you learn. You learn outside of class, and he explains a little more during the lectures. Attendance is mandatory, you can't do the class work without a code and its a good amount of your grade. He's alright.
I took the online accelerated summer 235 course and let me say that he was tremendous help. I was retaking ochem after getting a D, and I ended with an A. ATTEND CLASS, DO THE HOMEWORK, DO THE STUDY GUIDES, *ASK QUESTIONS*. If you actively participate in his class, YOU WILL PASS! He's a very understanding professor, you just gotta learn his style.
Never take this professor. If you have him, get out while you still can. Attendance is mandatory but you don't even learn in the lectures. Most notes will come from outside sources and the pre-lecture work. The prof does not care for struggling students, and is quite rude. Waste of time and money.
I know not everyone liked him, but I really enjoyed his class. He provided lots of practice problems and examples to help with tests and homework, and he added videos to watch after the readings that were super helpful. His recitations were also very useful. He's easy to talk to if you have questions—just email him!
His class was very boring. You basically teach yourself; if I didn't already know chemistry (AP Chem) I would probably hate this class w a passion. Lots of pre lecture work and homework. By far the most homework out of my classes. His lectures are mandatory and boring af. Also he has a seating chart, which is crazy.
made a girl cry in class.
His rating is so low for no reason. Yeah there's a lot of pre lecture work but its not the end of the world. His class is good and he's nice.
Almost all of this class's work is gonna be online. All that is done in class is review from the reading before. Just make sure you do all of your online work and take notes on it, you're not gonna learn much in class. He's very intelligent and smart, but do ALL of your online work or your grade is gonna tank.
He is horrible at teaching to the point where he doesn't even try. We only learn anything new from the textbook, and while attendance is mandatory, its not helpful at all because all we do are practice questions by ourselves. Also, do you study a lot for tests? Doesn't matter. It's not uncommon for him to be straight up wrong. Fire him genuinely.
While attendance is mandatory, this class is basically self-taught. All of his lectures are reviews of things already learned in the textbook. Use the guided notes available in Canvas for pre-lecture videos. In my experience, if you ask questions, he'll talk down on you and make you feel stupid, so it's better to just figure things out yourself.
Hybrid online class- lots of online work due before lectures although you can just skim through it. This class is not that bad, people saying Hascall makes it too hard are just not that smart. He posts tons of review for exams and SI / recitation give more than enough extra practice. lectures require participation I
I was a little skeptical having to take Hascall since his rating was low however, I feel that he was a good professor despite his low rating. As long as you do the pre-lecture and are focused on the material you will do fine in the class. The tests aren't too difficult as long as you study for them and use the resources he supplies you.
This chemistry class requires a lot of self-study, but the professor provides good support materials. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep. Attendance is mandatory, so engage with the content to do well.
His class has a lot of work but if you stay on top of it and really try you can get an A. All the resources he gives do help. His tests are very similar to the work we do in class. Very important to attend lectures.
He teaches his class like everyone else knows what they are doing. If you have not taken chemistry before, good luck because you are expected to know the entire class. His tests are multiple-choice, with the last page being short answer, and he will give you points if he sees that you are going in the right direction.
This professor was "nice" but his lessons are very wonky. He makes u watch videos before class and then during class u have to answer questions. He is kinda shy and drags his words so it takes forever to get through a lesson. He never gave out any extra credit points and his tests are very hard. Overall not a mean person but he isnt a good teacher
Worst professor ever! Nothing is organized, he uses like 3 different websites for assignments, none of which are linked to canvas so keeping track of things is a nightmare. Grades HEAVILY on participation it feels like I'm in kindergarten and he speaks in a very condescending tone. He's also terrible at explaining things.
just don't
This class is impressively difficult. The lectures do not help, yet are mandatory. Class grade is bet upon your performance on 4 exams, which good grades don't come easy on. Avoid this chemistry professor. Arrogant, belittling, and rude, made a student cry when she asked a question.
Professor Hascall's class is fast-paced. His teaching style assumes familiarity with each topic, making it challenging if you're not well-versed in college chemistry. The course includes three multiple-choice tests, a few open-ended questions, and a final exam. If you're unfamiliar with college chemistry, I recommend choosing a different professor.
3 practice tests adding up to 195 total questions, and yet there were still things on the final exam I hadn't seen before.
Hascall does not teach (period.) material in lecture. Might as well take online at a community college or something if he's your only option. All material is online, not explained well and attendance is mandatory for your grade, trust. Very heavy class so don't take any hard ones along with it lol. Don't know how NAU has not wanted better...
Hascall was genuinely the worst professor and human I have ever encountered. He is extremely unhelpful. The whole class is self taught because he does not teach. He made a girl cry in my lecture when she asked a question about a confusing topic and is extremely condescending. TA's are helpful but he is worst do not take him if u have the chance.
When I first read the rate my professor about Dr. Hascall I was worried but he ended up being an AMAZING professor. I truly believe people don't like him because they don't do the work. There is a lot of outside the class work but all of it benefits your learning. Lots of opportunities for help if you are struggling, office hours, SI, and TA's.
Not a bad teacher just not the best could be disrespectful but did teach the information. You have to do the online work if you want to pass and do not interrupt his lectures. He can be very harsh and did make students cry in class but the tas are great so if you need help go to them.
Good lectures, online work heavy but very helpful to learn material. Not a very hard class and rounded final grade up at end of semester.
There is a lot of pre lecture work due before class time, so fully understanding each topic that's covered can be hard because of how much you have to understand in such little time. It's a fast paced course so keep up on assignments and go to the lectures. I ended with an 88 and it was rounded up to a 90 !!
