Very nice, passionate about Biology, teaches in a very clear, methodical manner using lots of visuals. Gives excellent answers to students' questions, tests are easy but not laughably so.
Best Bio teacher I've ever had! Her lectures are amazing; she actually TEACHES the material in a way that you learn it! She is awesome
Best lecturer I've ever had! She actually knew the material, would take the time to go off-subject if people had interesting questions, and really wanted us to love and understand plants. I definitely reccommend her!
Harder than all hell. But a good teacher, and very clear on what she wants. She just wants ALOT
She is willing to teach. She knows what she is teaching...and what she wants. You need to prepare well...class is hard.
Anu is an absolutely fabulous teacher, with a genuine interest in seeing her students fall in love with biology. This class is very challenging, but the subject matter is fascinating and Anu is always more than willing to help students acheive clarity during her office hours. A best instructor and advisor I've had at WWU.
This class sucks. Boring as all hell unless you're a nerd. She never stayed on topic and she was just plain annoying. We'd pray every day she wouldn't show up and when she did, we'd leave early anyway
This class sucks. Boring as all hell unless you're a nerd. She never stayed on topic and she was just plain annoying. We'd pray every day she wouldn't show up and when she did, we'd leave early anyway
I was dreading plant biology so much until I realized how amazing a lecturer Anu was! She has such a passion for plants that she made ME like them, and I HATE plant bio! Go ANU!
easy bio 101 class. highly recommended for those who need a good grade and don't like studying. everything for the most part can be learned by attending lecture
dont take unless absolutely your last resort!
She was one of the worst teachers I have had. She would stay on the same topic for days and keep repeating what she said. She was very difficult to learn from. Her lectures were very boring.

I had Anu for Cell Biology, Plant Physiology and Plant Molecular Biology. She is wonderful. Her lectures are a bit slow paced, but if you pay attention and study mostly from the handouts you can not get less than a B. Beware of her multiple, multiples on her exams. They are trickier than they appear!
I don't understand all the criticism here. Anu Rocks. She's charismatic, really nice, and very bright. I don't particularly care for plant biology, but she made it that much more bearable.
Anu deserves the best ratings I can give... she puts so much effort and care into her lectures and students, a true university professor (thats hard to find these days!) If you are here to learn, you will appreciate her excitement and creativity. Otherwise, reconsider a university degree.
Anu is one of the best professors that I have encountered at WWU. She is very passionate about what she does, she cares about her students, and she wants everyone to do well. I cannot give a single complaint about this class. Lectures are well organized, very approachable, very knowledgeable.
If you need extra credits, but don't have time to go to class take this class. I went to probably 10 classes besides tests and have a 97%. I stopped going to class because it seriously put me to sleep. She puts her notes online and doesn't test on anything not covered in them. The lab portion is actually harder than the lecture, but is still easy.
Anu definitely goes by that old teaching saying that your students wont retain info unless you say it 7 times, but other than that I loved her teaching! She has spunk and passion for biology and it shows! The class is organized well and the tests are to the point. She uses many methods (visual, spoken, etc) to help students understand the concepts.
Anu. Humm, she is quite silly and entertaining to listen to b/c of her british accent. she will repeat one word in each lecture about 2,000 times, it's fun to take tallies if youre bored. she is SO into bio, but doesn't see to get that no one else is as excited as her. nice lady, easy GUR.
Nice lady. She's a very animated speaker which is refreshing, but unless you enjoy hearing the same things repeated for an hour, you will get bored! She posts notes online but a lot of the time there will be different slides in lecture, making the posted ones useless. And don't be fooled, she does test on book material too. ALWAYS went past the 50 mins.
Really friendly lady and entertaining to watch. Definitely one of the most enthusiastic professors I've had. I'm not interested in bio, got below average grades on the tests, and somehow managed a B. Her tests are not easy for the average student, so make sure to put effort into the Lab (easy).
Is clearly enthusiastic about biology, lectures are clear, very helpful, but her tests are written badly.
Very entertaining and enthusiastic teacher!! she is very into what she's teaching. She does tend to repeat things many times... puts all of her powerpoints online, so going to class isn't really necessary. Tests are MC and true/false and are NOT easy... do well in lab!!
Anu is very personable and if you ever need help in her class she is easy to talk to and understanding.
okay, so i'm DEFINITELY not a science person AT ALL but anu really made biology interesting for me. the lectures are not mandatory but i would suggest going because she is really good at explaining concepts in a way that makes sense (also she's super entertaining) anu is also super approachable and really wants to see you succeed! take anu's class!
so here's the deal: anu is a really entertaining teacher and has very creative ways of teaching the information. HOWEVER her tests are really hard and she does not give out a study guide. instead, she gives out 6 to 8 sample questions. for the great amount of material anu provides, it would really help if there were a study guide to help out.
Professor Anu Singh-Cundy is absolutely hilarious. She is an awesome teacher and is very into biology. She has something about her that just makes biology not only enjoyable but crystal clear to understand. Also, the lab is a very enjoyable part to the lecture class. You will definately enjoy this course even if you don't care for biology.
Awesome teacher! I hate all sciences but this class was easy. Went to lecture, she basically tells you exactly what will be on the test. She tried to make lectures interesting. But she is straight to the point and curves the tests.
Her lectures are absolutely useless and pertain only slightly to her exams. Her outlines of what must be studied for exams are misleading as well. Don't count on seeing the same material on tests that you discuss in class. Just learn the chapters inside out. She is a nice person but she rambles and takes too much time with trivial concepts.
Anu is a great professor but her tests are VERY HARD. If you attend her office hours, she is very helpful and will do whatever she can to help you do your best. I wish I would have done better in this class, but at least it was interesting! Anu's very passionate about biology!
All you have to do is read the powerpoints and you will do OK in the class. NEVER skip lab though. Anu is nice. This isn't an EASY A though..
Enthusiastic about biology and teaching it, really explains everything you need to know in lectures. A study guide would have been really halpful, and tests are tricky. But, powerpoints have the answers! Great teacher, overall.
I recently found out she helped write the fourth edition of the biology book, her name is written on the front page as one of the authors. IT blows my mind, i knew she loved biology but who knew she helped write that book. The tests were really hard, and if you take the class, I WARN you now, that its not an easy A.
Anu is a wonderful professor, she is super excited about her subject and really wants her students to do well. Her tests were fair; they weren't cake walks but she offers a very very helpful study session the night before all exams. She uses lots of visuals and models which helps bring tiny things into better perspective -- overall she's great!
Anu Is awesome, she's very enthusiastic and uses a lot of props to help demonstrate. Repeats main points a lot as well. try not to miss class, but not a huge deal if you do.
Anu is brilliant, she really is too smart to be teaching 200 level classes. She is really wordy and goes on a lot of tangents. She is helpful in office hours and in answering questions but will talk your ear off in the process. Exams are sometimes hard to figure out what she is asking. Class was still really interesting though, she knows her stuff!
She is too smart to be teaching this class. She would be better off teaching the basics of a more specific area of biology. Her lectures seemed scattered and were hard to understand. I read some of the book, and found very little of it on the exams. If you go to every lecture and take detailed notes, you should be fine.
Anu is a supurb teacher. She is always really into the lecture she is giving and has a great way of explaining the concepts. I was really scared to take the "much loathed bio 205" but she made it really fun. She has just barley enough of an accent to keep you interested in the way she talks but it doesnt inhibit her communication at all. Shes great
Anu knows her stuff. Goes above and beyond when answering questions, very enthusiastic about subject matter, really WANTS you to learn. She's a good teacher to have in that she is excited to give help and puts the students grades/success/understanding as her best interest.
Great Teacher! She taught two of my courses. For lectures she brings in models to explain confusing topics and does everything she can to help students.
Best biology teacher at Western. She truly cares about her students understanding and will work with you in office hours until you get the material. She is amazing at explaining and you can tell she really loves it!
there were a few things that bothered me about the class. One, she seems to lecture better in the afternoon than in the morning. Two, she helped write the textbook that we used and so when she lectured it sounded very similar. The tests are hard and i dont like how her lecture schedule would not line up with the reading schedule in the syllabus.
very passionate about the subject matter, but tends to speak very fast (so don't take early morning class with her if you're not a morning person). she's a good teacher but tests are pretty hard! material doesn't come out of her lectures whatsoever--you have to put it in context yourself.
Very passionate about biology. I agree though - probably great at upper level courses. Her tests were really hard. If you're not a science person, don't take during a hard quarter like I did! Going to class is far more helpful than the book.
Very difficult class! Class average D-. Tests do not match lecture or text. She would be a great upper level Bio teacher, poor entry level proffessor.
She lectures entirely from the book, which she wrote- both are unhelpful and difficult to comprehend. This made her already difficult tests even harder. She has succeeded in making what should be an easy course much more complicated than it needs to be. I would not recommend taking bio 101 with her.
very enthusiastic about the subject and you think that would help. She should be teaching upper level bio courses!DO NOT take her if you don't plan on going further in science! The tests are off on tangents from what she teaches and what is in the book. If you study hard and expect results then don't take bio with her. This class is discouraging!:(
Anu is a great teacher! She loves what she teaches and tries to make it as interesting as possible. If you dont understand something, she'll work with you one on one in office hours. Going to lectures is mandatory if you want a good grade. Her tests are hard, but she offers review sessions which really help.
Anu is a wonderful professor! She is passionate about the topic and very enthusiastic and happy in class. Great at clarifying any confusing topic, extremely intelligent, and overall someone you want to take a class from.
I found Anu's class to be very difficult for a science GUR. If you take her class, read the book! She is nice and helpful during office hours, but can get sidetracked in class.
Her tests are nothing like the study guides she gives. You go to the class feeling prepared and find yourself guessing on most of the questions. Granted, I didn't study that much. She knows the material, but she's not that great at teaching it, at least in a 100 level class. She literally wrote the book we use. She's a bit too smart for the class.
One of the best professors that I have ever had. She is very clear, passionate and helpful. If you listen carefully in class you'll be pretty set for the test. Great prof!
Professor Singh-Cundy is by far the best biology professor I have had. She explains everyting in great detail, and her exams are multiple choice. Awesome class, if you are looking to take Biology 206 I would extremely recommend taking her class.
My favorite professor ever! Her lectures are like watching the discovery channel, every detail has a supporting story. I'm a neuroscience major, but somehow she made even the plant section fascinating. Focus on lecture material for the exams, I don't recall any book-only questions. This class was much easier than 205.
Anu is a very nice lady, but this class was way too challenging for a science GUR. I studied really hard and went to every lecture and still only received average grades on the tests. Don't take this class with her unless you plan on taking higher level science classes!
This class was the worst. her lectures were terribly boring and she would explain the easy things in harsh detail and quickly go over the hard stuff so it was impossible to get any worthwhile information out of it. I would not reccomend her at all. plus the tests were super hard, avoid her if you arent a science major
Hardest class I've ever taken! She is very nice and very passionate but no matter how much I studied I did terrible on the tests. very discouraging.
ANU IS THE MOST AMAZING PROFESSOR I'VE HAD AT WESTERN!! I seriously love her, she's so clear when explaining things and wants her students to excel! If you have any trouble with her class, go to her office hours and she will definitely give you some pointers on how to do well in the course. I want her for all my biology classes now!
I simple love this woman! I would recommend reading the text for material covered directly prior to a test, sometime she wants to cover more than time allows for, during this period. Apart from this material, you are safe using notes and lecture slides. If you are a biology major, take as many classes as you can from her. Start with 205!
She's great - very friendly, fair grader
Anu is extremely passionate about biology, so because of that she is fun to listen to. However, this class is pretty boring if you don't have an interest in bio and tests are difficult. Don't take for an easy A.
Anu is wonderful! She can ramble a bit sometimes, but she has an obvious passion for Biology and cares about students learning. Most lecture material is straight from the book (that she co-wrote) and she posts the powerpoints on canvas. I mostly attended lecture because she was fascinating to listen to! :)
Such a nice lady! All of her lectures were super fascinating that she made boring topics like plant reproduction and gas exchange in fish interesting. Pay close attention to details because her tests can be quite tricky if you don't know certain characteristics or exceptions. Go to office hours if u need clarification, she's willing to help!
Not a science fan but she made bio interesting. Some people don't like the way she accentuates her words but that's how you know what's impt to know. She's really good about telling you exactly what's going to be on the test. Go to class & study everything she tells you!!
Anu literally wrote the book on biology - she authored the course's text - and it shows in her lectures. PowerPoints are very informative and clear. She's an excellent lecturer and even uses models to demonstrate processes. Tests aren't that difficult if you study, they just cover a vast array of material.
She is really repetitive and the tests are EXTREMELY difficult. The questions are really difficult and most of the time multiple answers are correct but you have to pick the "most correct" one. Slow lecture pace. Funny accent
Anu is a brilliant woman. She knows her stuff. Take this class seriously, take the time for extra studying, read the book, and study your brains out for the exams. They are tough.
Anu is a great professor. She's very thorough and very helpful. Her exams are challenging but not overly difficult and correlate well with what is taught in lecture. If you have a question about anything she'll take the time to make sure you fully understand.
I have taken many college courses over the past 17 years, and Anu really stands out. She's organized, cares about student learning, gives challenging exams, no homework, but best of all, she's brilliant. I have the utmost respect for her and her depth of knowledge. I truly enjoyed every lecture and learned a lot. You will too.
She is brilliant. Her lectures are rich, take notes but also listen to her! She will answer any questions in great detail. Her tests are HARD. She tells you you need to know the ins and outs of everything - and you do. Read the book, go to her study sessions and you'll do fine!
Anu is absolutely adorable and engaging. Her lectures are really in depth and she does genuinely want everyone to do well. The book isn't necessary, you cover everything needed in lecture. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about Bio and her lectures are never boring.
Anu makes biology less painful to hear about. She's very passionate about it so lectures are often in depth and interesting but BEWARE. Her tests are far harder than the lectures make them seem-- make sure you follow along in the textbook because that helps a lot. Also quizzes are online and she encourages taking them in a group.
Many have positive experiences with this prof, but I found her lectures to be insanely boring, and her exams to be unnecessarily difficult and very vague. She's very nice, and explains concepts if you schedule outside time. Exams are mostly multiple choice too, which is not a good way to test knowledge of upper level bio. Not very impressed.
Anu's by far the best general bio professor I've had. She seems to know everything and is really funny which makes lectures enjoyable. Her tests usually follow her slides but they can be very tricky. Anu was the first professor I've had that cared about teaching to teach students new material and not just to teach students to take their exam.
Tests (4 total) are multiple choice and true or false but they are very difficult. Averages are usually 65-75%. Do the readings, and take notes on what she says in class. Graded on just tests and lab score so make sure to do well in lab because it could save you. Great prof, really knows her stuff and she is really hilarious! 10/10 would recommend.
Anu is my favorite bio prof. I didn't so hot in 204 or 205, but 206 was almost fun to take with Anu. She does expect you to know everything though. Go to her review sessions before quizzes and tests and if you feel good after them, you're golden. Definitely set aside some time to fully understand the concepts. Memorization isn't enough.
The class is all lecture practically right out of the book. She is really passionate about teaching. She tells you what things you will want to pay attention to for the tests and what are not. You are graded on 3 tests and quizzes. All tests are multiple choice, but the questions are worth 2 or 3 points. Quizzes are online.
All of the other reviews for this professor are amazing, but my experience was very different. Her lectures are slow and boring, and she backtracks a lot which is incredibly confusing, especially for a cell biology course. She is super nice and sweet, but is a bad prof and also only grades you on exams (no other assignments); no room for error.
I had Dr. Singh-Cundy for BIOL206 as well and the class structure is the same. She is incredibly clear in her lectures, but you have to be there to get information that she wants you to know that is not obvious in her slides. This info is obviously in the text book too. As long as you show up and write down everything she says, you're good.
As a person I like her but as a teacher, I feel she isn't the best. Many slides. She knows the material, but her accent sometimes obscures words and it doesn't help that sometimes fumbles in speaking esp when behind schedule. The class wasn't easy, besides lab, was graded by multiple choice tests, which I did not like. No room for error there.
Really nice person but her lectures are so boring. She says maybe one or two useful things within her two hour lecture. Doesn't go over a lot of what's going to be on her tests. 3 tests and 3 quizzes are pretty much your entire grade plus your lab score.
This is one of the worst classes I've taken. Your grade is made up of 3 quizzes, 3 exams, and the lab grade. Anu doesn't stay on track with the lecture schedule and often falls behind. She posts lecture slides on canvas so there is no need to go to class. Her lectures are extremely boring and her accent makes it hard to understand words at times.
Lectures are very boring. Almost no important information comes during the lectures. Seemingly the only important thing during the lectures is that she will give you is a question/answer that will be on the test. Additionally, her accent sometimes makes it hard to understand, so if you struggle with accents, sit in the front of the class.
Shes a really nice lady but I wouldnt take her again. She talks extremely fast in lecture and with her accent and quieter voice its almost impossible to hear. Recorded part of a lecture and showed it to a few people not in the class who said it was so bad I should show it to the school board. Graded only on two exams and the final.
Anu is an amazing professor. She's one of the kindest, smartest, most accommodating professor's I've ever had. I learned so much from her. She loves "why" questions for exams but tells you the answers to them if you go to class. She also has the best props that she comes up with herself and brings to class. 11/10 prof hands down
She knows what she's talking about, but she talks like a bullet train and most of the times is hard to keep up with during lecture. Very nice person though.
Anu is a pretty good professor. She uses lots of visuals and props while shes teaching. Her lectures slides are pretty text heavy, but its nice for if you miss lecture because she posts the slides and they are easy to learn off of. Her exams are not cumulative including the final. She holds review sessions before each exam so you can ask questions.
If you get a chance to take a class with Anu, DO IT. She has some of the most engaging and informative lectures I have ever had. She will explain it again and again until you truly understand, and her office hours are even better. Her exams are tough, but if you go to her review sessions you will do great! Anu is AMAZING.
Dr. Anu is by far the best bio professor I have had. Although her lectures are quite dense, as expected in a bio course, she presents the material in a clear and easy to follow fashion. She is very caring for her students and available to answer any questions. As long as you take careful notes, you will do fine on her tests. highly recommend.
I took 323 with Anu and it was easily my favorite Bio class Ive taken so far. It was online asynchronous, she posted the lectures well ahead of time. The exam questions required a good understanding of the concepts, but as long as you watch the lectures and take notes/study a bit, exams arent awful. She is very fair and accessible!!
She is the only biology teacher I have had so far at Western who actually knows biology. She is very smart and passionate about the subject. Not many assignments, most of the grade is based on exams. Her exams are not the easiest but if you actually watch/ go to all of the lectures and take notes it is a pretty easy class. Also very helpful!
Lectures are very understandable; she explains topics clearly in more than one way and circles back to connect to previous ideas. Reinforces concepts and uncomplicates them. She does go a bit fast though - lectures were recorded so I could pause them but wouldn't have kept up easily otherwise. Knows subject very well and has a great sense of humor.
She "uses" the textbook, but very selectively. In the syllabus, it says to read a whole chapter, but in her powerpoints, it says you only need to read a section. Her powerpoints are what you're actually tested on. Her test questions are so mfn specific. They are multiple-choice, but all the options are basically the same, with tiny differences.
Lectures are taught in a story telling way which is pretty fun. Be ready for trick questions on exams. If you go to lecture you will have a better chance. Exams are multiple choice but very conceptual with your options being worded carefully to be wrong. Overall, very nice professor. Will work with students and accommodate within reason.
As someone who is horrible at memorizing things this class would have been much more difficult with a different teacher. The way Anu teaches is memorable and helps contextualize complicated concepts in ways that worked with my brain. She assigns a textbook but if you go to the lectures you won't need it.
Her lectures feel like stories which makes the classes go by more quickly, honestly the worst part about Biol 206 is the labs + the amount of work you have to put into them. I ended up putting more work into the biol 206 lab than her actual class. She offers 10 pts of extra credit which helps a lot, with a noncumulative final at the end.
Anu clearly puts a lot of work into making sure everyone understands the material, and it shows. Her lectures do a great job of teaching some otherwise dense material in a way that makes sense and is entertaining. She's all around just a really good educator.
My absolute favorite professor at WWU. Some of the most energetic and creative lectures I've seen. I spent as many days as I could talking with her after class about all manner of subjects. She really treats her students as adults and cares so much about your understanding of the material. Reading the book is mind numbing but it helps. Kind soul.
Anu seems like a nice person, but her class is insanely hard. She says the exams will be based on what is on the slides, then talks about each slide for 15 minutes and will test you on something she said once. Grades are only 3 exams. If you can't constantly pay attention for 80 minutes at a time in detail, you will not do well in this class.
The course had three non‑cumulative exams, including its “final.” Both lectures and the textbook were essential; I spent extensive time on the textbook, less on lectures, but attended every session. Though challenging, the class still allowed for earning a strong grade. The professor is very kind and provides insight for exams in every lecture.
Lovely person. Very helpful and available during office hours. Her exams are brutal. Long multiple choice and extremely specific. Will test you on something that she said once on a single slide. Exams are on the lecture slides not the textbook. Her study guides do not cover what will be on the exams. Lab is the worst part of this class.
