Even though the material is tough, Dr Roy made it understandable for bio majors.
Hard to beat in bad teaching
Awesome professor! Makes stats for CS easy. Problems solved in class are the same on the tests and quizzes.
Dr. Roy is impatient with student concerns/questions.
She is the only one that teaches this class you are stuck with her. She does make the class easy, and is very helpful. However she can get kinda scrambled when writing notes in class, and sometimes doesn't make some topics as clear as she should. But she is always willing to help anyone. Just do the homework and go to class and you wil be fine.
I only understood her saying "Do you follow?" She is a nice person, but unfortunately she is not clear.
She randomly calls on people to answer questions all of the time, and seems to pick favorites. A nice person, but personally I hate her teaching style as it just makes me nervous to go to class. Steer clear if you feel the same way.
She's not proficient at teaching, always made many errors when writing notes on blackboard.Give unfair grade on homework and quiz. You would get low mark if you do it not in her assigned way although it's right. However, since this is a required course for statistics major,we have no choice:( Better not taking her class if u have alternative!
Strong accent. Repeatedly asking classmates" r u following me?" though she lost her head in class occasionally! Swamped in the details of some formula that did not lead us to see the conclusion and application. Attending her class is a torture and unbearable!!
I had a 4.0 GPA before taking this class. I aced Bio and Chem with no problems but this class was impossible. If you dont listen very closely you will miss everything she says and even when you can understand her it doesnt help any. terrible class.
Fairly decent prof, especially for a foreigner. Pay attention really good, do what she tells you, visit office hours, go to TA & revisit notes from class that night. has pop quizes and tests are bearable if you stay on top of your notes, go to class & study alot.
Avoid this class at all costs!!!!
Avoid taking her! You can barely understand her and she SUCKS at teaching! If you ask her a question she won't answer you and if you visit her during her office hours, she won't help you whatsoever. I don't recommend her at all! Especially for Stats
Don't take her she is hard to understand, and not very helpful. just pring the notes.
worst professor I have ever had! do not take her. She does not know how to teach, and if you ask her questions she will tell you "that there is no time". this class should be an easy one and she makes it impossible. she is very rude and does not care about her students at all.
Worst professor I've had in the 2 years I've been at college. She's hard to understand and not very helpful. She can say some pretty ridiculous things. Do yourself a favor and do not take her. You'll regret it.
Worst teacher ever! she is very difficult to understand doesn't speak good english! notes are all online, moves very fast..I loved math before this and now its my worst grade! horrible, will not slow down and only gives two test! sucks for your grade will not give extra credit do not take!
Dr. Roy teaches a really tough class. She's been my worst teacher this semester...It's hard to understand her at times and she skips over things a lot and expects you to know them. I would strongly recommend finding a different stat class to take!
I don't know what people are complaining about, yes she can be frustrating but she basically spoon feeds problems to you, the ones done in class or in her notes are the EXACT ones on the exams, seriously EXACTLY. Take some responsibility, show up to class, do the problems in the book on your own, really understand what your doing, not so hard.
Yeah she puts almost the same problems from the notes or quizzes in her test but you still have to know what she is talking about. And she does not help at all!!! You cant ask question during class or during office hours because she wont answer. All she does is compare yall to other people that get statistics very well. The worst professor ever!!!
I have never had a professor this bad. I attended class regularly and she does not explain the material well and she does not know how to prioritize her time. I just finished the class and she has yet to include grades from the first month of class into the final average. I'm surprised she is still working at UTSA. Do not take this teacher.
Dr. Roy is really not THAT bad. If you go to class and study you'll do fine. It's a stats class you have to work for your A. If you go to her office she will help you, but really the notes she puts BB help enough. In class she does get sidetracked and won't go back but it's to help you. Make sure to choose your group for projects carefully!
This is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. She doesn't answer your questions and complains about everything! She was so upset that 90% of her class had failed one of her exams and yet that STILL couldn't tell her anything? She doesn't let you ask questions and if you dont know it, she simply says you should already know...DO NOT TAKE!
She is not helpful. She assigns homework and never picks it up but has a grade for it under the syllabus. You cant really understand her teaching. She's foreign (no excuse) but she sometimes seems like she doesn't know what she's doing. Dont register for her unless you know how to teach yourself.
Dr. Roy SPOON FEEDS her classes. A lot of these rating are freshman babies who don't know how to study. Go to her office SHOW INTEREST and she will help you! I barely studied and had around a 97 average. Offers WAY TOO MUCH Extra Credit. If you can't manage this class, seek help. It only gets harder from here.
Dr. Roy is a great professor, people that complain about her are just lazy and immature. It's way too easy to get an A in the class: go to class everyday, take good notes and read over the material often and you WILL get an A. She was extremely helpful even when I had the silliest questions. Highly recommend her!
Horrible! I had d most of the year somehow finished w/a c. No one in the q-lab would tutor me because it is a hard course in general. If you have questions she will tell you to come to her office hours because she has no time for your questions in class. In her office hour she will say you should have asked in class. Her accent is hard to follow.
She's a nice lady and means well but she is really hard to understand. She's not a good professor but her class is pretty easy and you can easily get by with a B. She doesn't use the book much and she provides you with notes which do help. She gives random quizzes & has assignments throughout the semester. She talks to much off topic and is boring.
She is very easy and curves quizzes and exams a lot.
You MUST get the text book. You cannot understand what she says.If you ask her a question, you will get an answer but it will confuse you even more. I stopped listening a long time ago. She gives you notes, but doesn't explain how she got the answers get gets. So hard to follow a long. I went to tutoring with other people for help!
Dr.Roy is not a bad professor. If you go to class and read the notes (which she types for you) you will do fine! She is very nice and generous and also throws random point on test and quizzes. You must go to class!
you wont understand her a thing that comes out of her mouth but her class is not very difficult. she gives a lot of extra points, and lets you work with a partner in the quizes. i fell a test and still got an A
Dr. Roy can be offensive and if you ask a question you will not get an answer without getting scolded. You must attend class (20% of grade). Pay attention to notes if you want to pass, some of the questions will be on quizzes. This is a freshman class so there is A LOT of immaturity. Pay attention and you'll be fine.
You can understand what she says just fine, but she rambles about nothing for about 30 minutes, doesn't go over problems step by step. She's a horrible professor, you'll end up teaching yourself. She takes things way too personally and when asks for advice she rejects it and keeps on doing what she's doing.
You HAVE to go to class, but if you at least halfway try to pay attention she will get you an A. Several extra points offered and truly gives you way more than needed to pass. She tries to emphasis how much she cares about getting the students who show up to pass, but if you don't give her your time she will not try to help. Do your work get an A.
Dr. Roy really cares about her students, & she shows that by typing all the chapter notes for us, so you DON'T NEED the book, she gives opportunities to get A's on quizzes (sometimes we got to have partners during quizzes), & tests are easy because they're pretty much word for word from the Ch. notes (with #s changed). Take her, she's great
If you don't go to class and take notes, you will be lost. Do not even buy the book. Gives vague notes, but she explains it mostly in class. She is a tough prof, but if you put in the effort you will get an A. Gives pop quizzes frequently, so GO TO CLASS.
Professor Roy literally SPOON FEEDS her classes. She is confusing but a sweet lady. She types our the notes for you, and then basically copies and pastes the notes onto the tests. Go to class because she gives a ton of extra credit and pop quizzes. There's no reason you shouldn't get an A.
She is a sweet lady and means we'll but can't teach. She makes the material seem much harder then it is, and will go on for half an hour showing proofs of equations that do no matter. She says only study your notes but come test time augments class examples enough to make them very tricky. She gives a quiz every other class. No time to ingest.
Professor Roy was tough in the beginning. She was very fast paced. You need to go to every class because she is always giving extra credit during classes. She knows her course is tough so she will allow you to get extra credit.
Ms Roy is a a very hard worker professor, you can tell she really cares about her students and her job. The class is very though you will have to work for your grade. Attendance is strongly recommended because she will explain the topic and give quizzes. Her accent made it a little challenging to understand.
This class was ridiculosly easy compared to some of the other stat professors that I have heard about. She adds at least 5 points to every test grade, and has a "bonus quiz" that is basically extra credit to your quiz average. Only 4 homeworks for the entire semester. If you go to her she will help you! LOVE HER!
This class is hard, and tests are tough. She gives pop quizzes but also gives quite a bit of extra credit. You don't need the book since she types all the notes but she expects you to print them out and bring them to class. Mrs. Roy also flies through them and it's hard to keep up. Attendance is not mandatory but you'll get lost if you skip.
Professor Roy's class was very tough for me because math is not my forte. I had to work hard in her class to get an A. The most important thing about her class is that you pay attention during her lectures and do the problems in her notes that she gives you until you understand it. Some of the problems from the notes will appear on the tests.
Not the best professor, but she's very nice and wants her students to pass. However, kindness won't help you pass the class. She gives a lot of extra credit, which is great for your grade but won't help your intellect. The class is somewhat tough, but if you attend every class you won't have a problem. Book isn't necessary.
Roy is a very nice lady and will most likely give you extra credit if you ask for it. However, her class is not easy. I'm a straight A student and I struggled to get the A. Unless you are a genius, go to the SI sessions. Roy is very confusing, but the SI session help a lot.
Professor Roy is an amazing teacher! She's, hilarious and she really cares about her students. Says she gives pop quizzes but she lets you know a week in advance if you go to class. MAKE SURE YOU GO TO CLASS! She does random in class assignments when not a lot of people show up. Tests are hard, quizzes are easy. Overall great class
Miss Roy is a nice proffesor that really cares about teaching. However I feel the way she teached didn't helped me to learn. I got an A on the class bur I barely learn everything and I am paying for that on harder stats classes. So, If you are going to take a higher stats class do not taker.
Roy can be confusing with her instructions but overall this class was not that hard. Go to class everyday because she will give easy in class assignments. Her quizzes are pretty easy and the tests are exactly like the quizzes. She will give extra credit
Professor Roy is an amazing professor. I honestly don't understand why her rating is so low. She prepares notes for the class and has them on blackboard, she gives tons of extra credit, very clear on what she wants for hmwk etc. I blanked on my second test and I talked to her afterwards and she helped me out. Go to class, SI sessions, and pass!
Great professor! She uploads all of the notes before class so all you have to do is print them and bring to class. Does easy in class questions to boost grade. If you ask her during class to add points to a test she more than likely will. Only problem is sometimes she forgets what she told us, but overall very good professor!
I like her, but you have to get to class on time and pay attention at least a little. She likes to do in class assignments and asks you to turn them in 3-5 minutes later and won't accept them after that and her pop quizzes she tells you the class before what she's going to have on them. Not too difficult if you pay attention.
Roy is an okay professor. A good choice if you are not a stats major. She calls people out during class which is probably the worst part. She gives a lot of extra credit and quizzes are usual like the test. If you don't get an A in this class you are doing it wrong.
Roy can be frustrating. She asks you to do/bring things that she insists are on blackboard but they aren't. However, she gives you all the notes and you print them and bring them to class to annotate yourself. She's very specific about showing work and takes assignments at the end of class sometimes for grades so make sure you come to class.
I loved her class!! She was engaging and entertaining, and gave very straightforward tests that were just like the problems in class. She made everything very accessible and straightforward, and I spent very little time studying outside of class. She posts her lecture notes, and works to help everyone understand. I definitely recommend taking her!
did not have a good experience taking her. Gives extra credit, but lots of surprise pop quizzes. Really strict about group work. Definitely study all notes and quizzes before each exam. Attendance not mandatory, but necessary to pass. Bad at replying to emails, she ignored majority of mine till I actually went into her office and addressed it.
Roy is interesting. Her accent was overwhelming at first because I'd never had a foreign instructor, but you get used to it eventually. This class is solely about group projects. There is no individual work besides tests and quizzes. The material is tough, so attendance is absolutely mandatory. If you miss a day or two, you're screwed.
Professor Roy is amazing!! She makes class go by fast, NO TEXTBOOKS NEEDED, she types all of the notes for you. Her class is very straight forward. She loves her students, you will Love her!!!!
The content of the class itself is hard but she typed up all of our notes and would thoroughly go through them in class. If the practice problems in class aren't enough, SI Sessions help out a ton. However, she really rushed through the last few chapters but you can tell that she really cares about us with the amount of extra credit she gave out.
She's the worst professor I think I have ever taken. She has such a heavy accent its hard to understand her sometimes with all the terms you don't know. She's a hard grader and actually very rude. Her lectures is basically types notes and she just reads them. I don't recommend. She's terrible.
She's the worst professor I think I have ever taken. She has such a heavy accent its hard to understand her sometimes with all the terms you don't know. She's a hard grader and actually very rude. Her lectures is basically types notes and she just reads them. I don't recommend.
Questions were never answered when needing help on a topic, there was one class where she refused to explain something that the majority of the class was confused on. I would definitely avoid if you are trying to pass.
Professor Roy made Statistics incredibly hard to understand, and was never clear and detailed in her lectures. The material itself was not difficult, but the way she taught it made it difficult, highly recommend another professor for Basic Statistics.
there are around 7 pop quizzes so be ready. If you go to class pay attention it should be fine. Seems easy at first but study and understand what the question is asking. Ask for hw problems!!!!!! she doesn't grade them but she uses them to make exams. If you need extra credit just ask! very considerate and wants you to pass
The material isn't inherently difficult, but the way it is delivered is an absolute circus. She frequently comes to class and blames students for "Not coming to the class ready", when she gave absolute no direction on how we should prepare. The worst part is that she jumps around in the book, so no chance of learning at home. Worst prof ever
Do not take her for Basic Statistics if you dont have to! I expected this class to be simple since the material isnt hard but the way she lectures is very difficult to understand. There are pop up quizzes and attendance questions a lot! Also if we didnt understand things or had tech problems, we didnt come to class ready.
If you take this class you need to buy the textbook. I have reviewed everything in that class through the textbook. Be warned she is not lenient on life issues regarding quizzes and tests. Take extra precaution on not being late to class, nor turning in quizzes, tests, or assignments in late.
Explains very poorly and blames students for having technical problems. Honestly I learned more from a small study group than from her.
She will give random attendance at the beginning, middle, or end of class for a grade. Her quizzes and exams are also random and won't answer any questions that you have clearly. You never know when you will have a quiz, exam, or attendance and she will not let you miss it for any reason AT ALL!
If you take this class, be prepared to self teach because this professor will be no help. I had her online which made it more difficult, so if you do take her I recommend doing in-person. Even in the zoom classes, anyone who asked a question was most likely shut down and/or expected to already know the material. Overall, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS !
She is one of the best statistics professors at UTSA. Before taking her class, I was scared, but she exceeded my expectations. Yes, she gave pop quizzes, but they were helpful in the exams, and she always tells one beforehand. This is an upper-level class; as a senior, I have taken multiple statistics classes, but this is the best.
I wouldnt even call her a professor. Terrible on communicating with students. Only talked about herself and about how she will be the reason on our future. I guess they hire anyone these days. Youtube was my best friend on learning.
To begin with, this professor yelled at students and accused them of lying she also would constantly attempt to rush the class on topics and blame the students for mistakes and when you attempted to ask for help she would either meet you with disrespect or completely ignore you she also doesn't seem to have a grasp on how to use blackboard.
If you can avoid taking her, please do. She is a very harsh grader and does not set clear expectations for her assignments/exams. She has pop quizzes weekly which are helpful for the exam but extremely anxiety-inducing. She's not very compassionate to students' situations and overall creates a very unhealthy learning environment.
Honestly, if you attend class and pay attention to her lectures this class should be an easy A. She's kind and genuinely wants her students to succeed.
Very difficult Professor. Have to go to class b/c there is no other way to follow the course. Has random pop quizzes and homeworks that are unclear and most times don't follow with what we did in class. Tests also don't really follow directly from class. Lectures are unclear and hard to follow. Seems like she has good intentions but poor execution.
The material isn't too difficult to understand but the course structure is a huge adjustment. Homework was pretty easy but the pop quizzes were detrimental as I felt like I didn't have time to prepare for what we might be tested on. Discussing your concerns and learning during office hours is key to succeeding in this course.
I loved Dr. Roy. She cares greatly and loves participation. Be prepared to participate and ask questions. Stat1053 is not an easy course, so you HAVE TO STUDY. The only reason I did not have a high A is not studying. Pop quizzes are frequent, study for them, Dr. Roy will warn you they are coming. Definitely one of my favorite professors I've had.
She doesn't care about her students, she likes to read off a paper and doesn't give a clear lesson or explanation for anything. Sometimes, she will provide you with something to turn in for attendance, but you won't know when it will happen. She is very harsh, doesn't allow any late work, and is very rude to her students
She is a very sweet person, but a horrible teacher. If you pay attention to her classes, you will unlearn what you already know. She stops the entire class for 2 minutes to say that "30 seconds is important", or she tries to get "somebody from the back row" to say something for another 3 minutes. And this happens several times during lecture.
Prof. Roy is a caring professor, but her course organization is extremely poor, and she doesn't post ways for students to prepare for pop quizzes or exams; around half of your quizzes will be entirely post-quizzes, so you must prepare for them every day. If you mess up on one exam, your final grade is likely doomed. She reads off notes in lectures.
Dr. Roy is accessible if students need her help. She really cares about her students. However, you need to go to the class and stay engaged. Discuss with her if you don't understand the lecture or are having problems with homework. She gives pop quizzes, but she also gives a bonus quiz at the end of the semester.
She cares and wants you to pass, but offers no help when asked. Very few assignments so if you do bad it's hard to catch up. Very exam and test heavy grading. Her accent makes it very difficult to understand her. She always goes off ranting about other topics instead of teaching. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE.
All in all, whether you are a TA or a student, this professor is going to stress your life into a living nightmare. Every time she talks about her bad days and blames the students for not following the homework instructions, her emotions get berated so easily ngl. I get that she is old, but I wish anyone could be a professor who is nice, not rude.
Just don't take it, believe me, any other stats class.
Worst prof I've ever had, bar none. Narcissistic and rude, terrible communicator, no clear grading criteria, plays favorites, all work is on paper, and gives pop quizzes. It seems she only enjoys "playing professor" for the power dynamic, and isn't genuinely interested in her students learning anything. Avoid when you can.
She is an absolute dumbass and an inappropriate professor I've ever met. I'm done hearing stories about her personal life which many students don't care about those. All I want is to learn NOT her mentality face against students and others like myself. The university must retire her and hopefully someone can take her spot. I'm done taking with her.
Her handwriting is not legible. You can't take pictures of anything. Quiz and test questions are nothing like the study material questions. She rambles constantly. I have not understood a single lecture she has taught. This is the first time I've ever found myself wanting to have homework because at least I would be able to properly teach myself.
