She is very cool and excelent teacher
If she made this class any easier Bush could pass it.
April is awesome! Very fun, high energy instructor. Seems to really enjoy her work. She is very good if you are a visual type learner. Her exams are a little more challanging than most; however, if you know your stuff its a non-issue.
April is my favorite teacher at PCC. Her class is very intersting and she makes it fun. Would recommend to others for sure! word of warning though - if you like to coast by just doing the minimal amound of work, may want to avoid =) You REALLY learn bio!
I am crazy about April Fong and her teaching methods....she covers it all - so all types can learn...she's fair, approachable, funny, and slightly weird by her own admission...
April teaches like her class is the only one students are taking. Her tests are extremely difficult. So far, the toughest bio prof. I've had. If you are a bio major, go for it, otherwise...find someone else.
I'm in grad school now and took April's class like 7 years ago and it's still the best class I've ever taken! I love her! I wish all the rest of my teachers (at "fancy" schools) could actually teach like her.
April is awesome. She is clear, concise, funny and passionate about biology...not to mention she uses a smiley-face grading system. What more could you want?
She is always laughing and making the topics fun and easy to understand, although she makes you do busy work the class was overall enjoyable
happy! fun! keeps you interested.
Very passionate and capable professor
April is really passionate about her job. The class work isn't easy, but you'll learn a lot and have fun doing it!
April is syrupy-sweet (on the surface), passive agressive wasting much time telling "back in when I was in band camp" stories. Her teaching style is condescending for a 200 level course. Most of the subject matter is redundant if BI100 was taken. Annoying and vindictive. Beware of pop quizzes, punishing tardy or absent students. Not Recommended!
Loves biology, not so much people. Definitely knows biology. Tests and self-prescibed assignments (scientific papers) very time consuming and detracting from other courses. Claims we will be grateful to her later, along with her many other examples. Carefully consider your options.
talks a lot about her glory days as a student, treats the class like jr high kids, and wastes students' time with assignments that are not relevant to bio. my least favorite instructor at pcc - avoid if you'd really like to learn bio.
April tends to stray off subject during lectures. She plays favorites with her students. Not recommended for serious students, or impatient people. Lectures require loads of patience, hoping that someday she might get to the point.
I found her and the class a mixed bag. She has extremely time consuming assignments that sometimes aren't explained well. At the same time she knows the subject matter inside and out. She's just hard, and sometimes confusing. I am one of the folks who is now at PSU and appreciates the harder assignments already, so that's not a myth.
I really enjoyed her class. There are a lot of assignments and quizzes, but I would rather have more grades in a class then not, plus she lets you make up your lowest quiz scores. She knows her stuff and explains things in a way thats easier to relate to and remember. I would totally take her again!
I find that this class is more of a sociological examination of a crazy lady who resents having grown up into a biology instructor. She's very smart, passive agressive and rude. I'm consistently amazed that she chose to teach.
Before taking her 101 class I didn't understand anything about biology. Last term I got a high B. I think some of the people posting in this site are just miffed at April. Bottom line she is an amazing teacher who can readily translate the information to fit any learning style. April is very well-meaning, some people are just insecure.
April is a terrific teacher if you can get past the personal stuff. She can be a bit snappy at times but is eager to not only teach but to inspire and guide as well. Some think she is unreasonably difficult, but if you are serious about bio, you'll be glad you had her for a teacher. Friends taking upper level courses appreciate her sci. papers.
Wow, where to start on April. She's absolutely nuts. At least 20 minutes of class each day is wasted on her cracking little corny jokes and laughing at them. She is a decent teacher but she is extremely difficult and can be somewhat cold at times. Bottom line, she is WIERD. She has some wierd obsession with sex, she talks a non-stop about it.
I <3 April, one of the best instructors Ive had
I really disliked April. Her tests were hard, but not unfair (most of the time). However the practicles were annoying!! Like the candy examples - how are we supposed to know a totsie pop is supposed to represent a sporangium!?! Also April can be extremely moody - and when she is - she is not always fair.
I would say that I was a little mixed about her. She does know her botany but she taught as if we weren't all beginners so some went over my head. She tried to make it fun and most times it was with field trips. There was no direction for lab so I felt that was a waste. Her tests are difficult, but passable if you study. Overall, I'd recommend.
This is actually the coolest class i have taken at pcc. She is very helpful. The critisism written on this site actually suprised me. She is very knowledgable about this stuff.
April is nice. However this class is impossible. It took her 3 days to cover the syllabus and she spent ~30 min of every class telling us her expectations. I studied 30 hrs/wk and still struggled with the material on tests. She is not direct and gets lost in tangents. Her teaching style made me feel anxious about her impossibly long essay exams.
I loved April's botany class. Many of her classes were conducted outdoors with many opportunities for hands on learning. The tests were average in easiness and she has a lot of quizzes, but if you read the material and study your plants you should do just fine. The end of term project was unique and fun. Two thumbs up!
Negative learning experience. Professor is delighted by others failure. She must feel rejected inside. Exams are mostly objective, she does not allow you to compare the way she grades your test to other students. If she likes you you'll do fine, but get on her bad side and shes not forgiving. Lectures are boring she reads the book's power points
She knows her stuff but gets snappy. She has a nervous laugh and can be harsh when simple questions are asked. Her tests are always full of question and she admits that she makes them too hard...which makes no sense. However she is helpful durring her office hour so take advantage. My best advice read ahead!
I dreaded going to her mandatory lectures. This class made my guts churn. Believe me take this class at portland state. April is a professor with something to prove.
April is really hard working and attentive teacher. One of the best I've ever had.
She is a good techer and I learned a lot from her style.
The exams are impossible. The lectures are hard to follow because April goes off on tangents. The lectures are mandatory and boring. April is not open to questions and if you ask a question that she thinks you should know she will try to humiliate you in front of everybody. Instructor clearly picked out favorites in class. I spent 20 hours/week stu
I tend to disagree with the idea that she is well preparing students for upper division biology classes. I took A&P classes and Histology at PSU and the professors there had different expectations of their students. She does nothing but frustrate students with her tests and boring lectures. Do not take this course for her, take it at PSU.
April is a very attentive and dedicated teacher. She is very nice and tries to teach in a way that all different types of learning styles can understand. But know that this is a hard class, it has tough tests so be prepared to study.
I took April all year, although I felt she was a pretty tough teacher; by 213 she demanded a ridiculous amount of outside class time for her Habitat team, and 20 hours of volunteer work on top of her already tough exams. In my opinion her student's life to be all about Biology all the time; forgetting that some of us have a life outside of school.
April is a good teacher, the material itself requires a lot of time to fully comprehend. I took her all year, but 213 she was expecting far too much outside of class. It is clear that she has lost touch with the fact that students have a life outside of biology. She expected 18 hours of volunteer work and more. I would skip her for Bio 213
Very nice person but impossible to learn from! She goes off on tangents on useless information. She uses questions from an analytical question book on the exam which has no answer key and she does not cover them in class. She has no life outside biology so she ridicules her students for not being as knowledgeable as she is.
too much memory
Fong is a mediocre instructor at best. Her ?lectures? consist of reading the PowerPoint presentations that come with the textbook. It?s basically like having the book read out loud to you. The required labs vary in quality, but have little impact on your grade. Expect to spend a considerable amount of time listing to Fong giggle at her own jokes.
(I took botany.) April is awesome! She's very cheery, but can be very strict. She is a hard grader, but if you work hard, that won't be a problem. Sure, it can be a lot of information to hold...but as long as you constantly attend class, take notes, and study consistently you will do just fine.
April is challenging in a good way, encorporating formats for diverse learning styles. She understands the field and what her students will need to succeed. As a natural slacker, I like to get by with doing the bare minimum. April has done more for me in helping me raise the bar and live up to my full potential than any prof I've had thus far.
she is goofy and nice, kinda weird.but she grades pretty hard on your grammer and spelling. the tests are SUPER hard unless you study and understand th ematerial 100%
She requires a lot from her students, so I wouldn't suggest taking her class if you already have a heavy schedule. She is very funny, and you will learn a lot. Expect to spend a lot of time on this course!
April is tough but its a Biology course and if your expecting a science class to be easy then your in for a shock. She is tough but fair and clear on what she expects from you. Great teacher. I loved taking Biology from her. She is there for you when you need her and willing to help you out. Expect to work hard though.
I was very afraid to go to the class.
I don't recommend to take her class. If she likes you, you will pass; otherwise, you are a dead bug. She won't forgive. It is very hard. There are too much materials, projects,20 to 24 hours volunteer, journal, research...etc. She graded very hard on the grammar, spelling...ect.
Very good teacher. Could have related more of her research to the text, giving more real life examples would have made the classes better. Her tests are not well designed, and can be random about what they over, but over all, she does a good job of making the class fun and accessible.
April is an excellent teacher. She really cares about her students and cares that they learn the material. She puts in just as much effort as you do to help you do well in the class. The class is incredibly demanding though. I wouldn't recommend it if you already have a heavy load. But if you put in the work and time, you'll do well!
April is a terrific teacher. Yes, the exams are hard - however, this class is a hard class in general. I don't believe the questions asked on the exams were random - each exam covers 4-5 chapters, which is a lot of info to absorb. If you read the material and study - you will do well in this class. Recommended!
I thought I was exaggerating when I thought she hated me, butI was right!. Wish I got out of this class while I had the chance. Every paper I wrote, I ended up getting a bad grade, even on the rewrites! Definitely picked faves. She expects you to do alot in lab, however she does not grade youfor it!Even had the nerve to ridicule my writing.
April is hard but she is fair. If you plan to have a career in biology then she is the teacher for you. She loves to teach and really wants her students to do well and understand. You will have to put in the effort though so be prepared to work for a good grade. Her tests are hard so study.I loved her!!
Had April for lab. She can be unclear sometimes, but she's always willing to go above and beyond to help you understand concepts. Requires 10 hours of volunteer work, so if that's not your thing, go with another instructor. Overall, she's pretty cool, knowledgeable, and a little on the weird side. Class is easy if you stay on top of the work.
I had April some years back for my Biology sequence. She was demanding but did more than most to prepare you meet ANY challenge. After sleeping at 1:30am, I went on to read Harrison's Textbook of Medicine with little difficulty. I have been forever grateful to what she gave me, even as I admit to calling her a few French words at 1:30 am.
If you are not planning to go into botany don't bother taking her. She doesn't know or teach much about mammals. Also, April appears to be a happy upbeat person but this is a façade. She has favorites and if you are not one of them good luck getting an A. All of her tests are mostly essay which makes them very subjective
April is a solid professor. I don't think she holds favorites, yet is one of the types to help those who are trying to help themselves. Her tests are difficult, but is always clear on what is to be tested. Trying to simply "get by" will not work in her class, just as it won't in other higher sciences. Prepping for MCAT was easier after having her.
Lecture is textbook power-points read verbatim. Attendance is required for daily quizzes at the start of class. You have to stay on top of reading the textbook every night otherwise this class will be very difficult.
She is helpful when you go to her office hours. I never missed a lecture, read the text, and studied with a group, yet on the last 2 exams did very poorly. Though there are the 'course objectives' there really is no way to tell what out of thee 4+ chapters per test, will who up on the exams.
April Fong is a funny and brilliant teacher! However, she doesn't put up with crap or slackers. I enjoyed her class and plan on taking more with her. If you're looking for an easy A she isn't what you're looking for.
April is a great person, a great teacher who wants to see all her students do well, but she is not gonna spoon feed the information to you. It is still your responsible to study and *Learn* the information. If you have the time, it will be worthwhile to join the Habitat Team outside of class, you might be more successful that way.
Yes, her classes are challenging, but only when it counts. She is all about hands-on learning, so prepare to invest time in projects. If you are interested in Biology and want an instructor who loves to teach, then April's your girl. She is passionate about nature, and her funny attitude is infectious.
Demanding class, but it is fun, and you'll never forget what you've learned if your into it. April is one of the best teachers I've had.
Not certain what grade I have yet (probably a C). Fong is an excellent teacher. I never feel like sleeping in her class. She is tough, but it's like tough love. If you aren't willing to put in the hours of work this class takes anyway, then it is not for you, but if you want to learn the material well, and demonstrate this, she is very helpful!
This teacher is rude. The field trips are cool but I don't feel like we spend enough time on the material. Though we are expected to know it all perfectly. This teacher expects everyone to be super humans. Don't take her classes, I repeat, unless you are a teachers pet, don't take her class
Oh my goodness! I am about to go to this counselor because this teacher is unapproachable! She yelled at me for asking about an assignment last class. Her class is so physically draining and I damaged my hip over it. Two different exams, I had more correct answers the second exam and I got the same score as the first one.
April is a tough love kind of teacher. She expects you to know your stuff. IF you can come to class prepared and apply the knowledge you have learned her positive attitude will glide you through glass. She is awesome. Do not take her class if you are not going to put in the time, someone else who wants to learn could have your seat.
Very hard Grader. Moves quickly, too quickly. Doesn't explain why you got the grade you got. Isn't always willing to take time and talk with you and help you figure out ways to improve. Difficult class. Nice person, great personality, passionate about the subject, but difficult to get along with as an instructor.
terrible teacher. she takes forever to get to a point, and tries to be overly friendly. Feels the need to "grade" things with a smiley-face based grading system. She needs to calm down and grow up. Get another teacher if possible.
Made us do a bunch of pointless and incredibly time consuming projects that taught us nothing. Not much help at all either.
Do not let her smiley faces fool you; she is an incredibly hard teacher. She does not go over all the material that will be on the tests and part of it comes from sources outside the book. On reports, she is unforgiving on the slightest punctuation error. Just go find someone who allows you to learn the material instead of grading for mistakes.
I had April for lab. April uses smiley faces as a grading system and will ding points from you even if you get all "smiley faces." She doesn't answer questions and treats her students like they are all 16. I got an A, but still felt dissatisfied with the class. Wouldn't recommend.
WAY too much work for an entry level Biology class. She is a nice enough person but grades REALLY HARD and gives extra work that is unnecessary to the class. Overall, I would recommend someone else as she is far too hard a teacher!
She grades like its an upper division course and wants you to go way beyond what she asks for in order to get an A. Her gradings ridiculously hard, and she doesn't budge when you talk to her or improve. Not easy, but learning was clear. Shes funny, knows her stuff. Don't expect an A even if you study for days before tests or quizzes.
Very knowledgeable about the subject, but moves very fast through the material. Can be a tough class w/o prior science background. Very happy personality, but tends to treat her students like high-schoolers. Not recommended if no science background.
April is a teacher who knows her subject very well, but this does not make her a teacher. She plays favorites and will make your life very difficult if you don't play her game. Her lectures consist of a pre-made powerpoint which she rushes to finish, because the other half of her time is spent talking about her life. My love for bio was hard kept.
I had April for lab, and hated my whole term. I got a good grade, however, she is very inconsistent and, honestly, very rude. She will treat you like you are in high school. Also, she gives way too much homework. We had to volunteer outside of class. Working almost full-time and going to school full-time makes a lot of extra work difficult.
I did find this class very challenging, TONS of assignments outside of what you'd expect, lectures are fast, but April was a very fair grader & actually gives tons of extra points even when you only got a tiny bit of the question. Her tests are very fair. She was ALWAYS there for me & was very nice & supportive & is truly caring & bio-passionate!
You earn your grade. It moves incredibly quickly; expect a quiz every class. In the syllabus it says study 10 hrsweek for an average grade. Double that. Buy the study guide, do the reading, and use the online textbook guide. She has a lot of experience to offer if you pay attention. She works incredibly hard & is always energetic, even at 8 am.
There was 2-3x work to do for this class than others i've taken. This class is demanding so make sure you have the time for it! That said, she tries to be fair and is generous with extra credit. April is a very caring person, but a tough teacher. If you do have the time and you enjoy the material, you'll be glad you had her. Very knowledgable!
Required 10 hours of volunteer work, asked for 10 pages of writing about it. The volunteer work had no value to the class, she just makes her students volunteer because volunteering. She also assigned a presentation about this volunteer work. So much of the class is focused on something that hardly matters to the actual subject. It's ridiculous.
I liked april alot. Dont take bontany if its your first ever science class. Take Bio 101 at LEAST first. Shes very smart, and knows what shes talking about, but can kind of treat you like a little kid and can make you feel stupid sometimes for asking questions. But, if you stay engaged it's really easy to get on her good side. You'll need to study
10 hours of volunteer work and a 10 page reflection. quiz every class. Lab time is used kind of poorly.
This class takes effort and I learned a lot. April is great and will prepare you for more coursework in sciences. She can be condescending and a little rude. She also cares a lot about her classes and is knowledgeable and invested. Was worth it.
Engaging, involved, and great to take for people already interested in majoring/working in sciences. Not ideal for nonscience majors. Read all comments for a whole picture. She can seem arbitrary. She also sets Great(!) habits for future lab classes (if I'd had subsequent instructors first? Hah!). Hard class, learned a ton, 100% worth it.
April was my lab teacher. In lab attendance is mandatory or you won't pass. She is very annoying though. She's too peppy for my liking and never stops talking. Her mood can also flip so quickly, one second she's happy and the next she's yelling at the class for something stupid.
April is great! Very kind, understanding, and really cares about her students. The hands-on experiences are great. Tests are a bit tough, but they come straight from the textbook, so as long as you study that. Lectures don't seem as robotic as most lecture-heavy professors, which I enjoyed--She actually talks to you. Lots of documentary watching.
Shes knit picky when it comes to scientific papers, the whole class is based off of this. She gives very few extra credit opportunities. When explaining an answer for a question on a test, shell take points off if youre specific or for being super vague. Never clear about what she wants in projects
She was great, I was never bored in class because she makes lectures engaging.
April is a good teacher, however I do not think she should be teaching at the college level. She treats students like 4th graders, using kid words and ridiculous examples and having pointless 'field trips' outside of the class. Requires volunteer work and doesn't believe students who say they are too busy. Can go from happy to annoyed like that.
Pros: Quick feedback for papers and exams, always available via email, will help during office hours, you will learn a lot in this class, puts extra credit on her tests. Cons: Exams require application of material and you don't get to practice application in class, lectures are mundane, not very engaging class time. Also- lots of quizzes
Very understanding that students have a life outside of class! Literally just talk to her and email her!!!Class is very lecture heavy and she can get excited and go a bit fast, she does sometimes talk in a little voice but is overall a good teacher. On tests there is a LOT of drawing and then explain, so know how to apply material! Would take again
Bad. She never, ever, ever, ever, EVER stops talking about herself. Ever. If you try to take charge of your learning process by talking to others about the course material, she INSTANTLY brings the conversation or attention back to herself. I'm glad there are other profs who enjoy in letting students develop their own relationship with science.
Not very good at lecture, kind of gets excited and rambles. Responds quickly to emails which is good! Not a lot of homework, but the few projects she has are hard. She is very bubbly in person, but she is quick to turn (she sent me a very aggressive email over nothing). You are expected to have almost everything memorized which makes her class hard
The grade is earned, so take her if you actually want to learn biology and not just skate through. Professor Fong is energetic and passionate about her students understanding of the material. The most accessible of all my professors, via email and office hours. I would highly reccommed for students looking to perform at 4 year science courses.
Very lecture heavy, with basically no classwork to speak of. If you learn through classwork and not through tests and quizzes, I wouldn't take her class. Its all quizzes (1-2 a week depending if lab quiz happens) and then 3 tests that make up most of your grade. She is nitpicky when grading too.
Hands down the best science professor I have ever had. I was struggling in her class, and she took the time to discuss why I was struggling and helped me structure myself for success in her class. She always went above in beyond in the lectures and quizzes and exams to prepare us as much as possible. Literally wish she taught physics and chem too.
Very tough grader with tricky exams. There are weekly lecture and lab quizzes, 3 exams, and scientific papers. Beware of her multiple choice questions, very difficult.
my favorite professor, she is good at what she does and is truly passionate about her field of work.
Mrs April ann is an amazing teacher, she is extremely approachable and will take the time to help you if you ask, she is extremely friendly and made me enjoy ESR.
April Ann cares about her students, and creates projects, labs, and quizzes not just for a grade, but for us to fully understand and comprehend the concepts from class. So, no busywork. I like that we had discussions in small breakout groups. It was fun to be able to connect with other students who have a similar interest in sustainability.
Get ready for pop quizzes, pop assignments and many many little things that are due but not listed anywhere until they're due. Expectations for assignments were unclear which amounted to so much time spent clarifying. I wanted to love this class and its honestly just taught with an insistence on being unpredictable.
April is a knowledgeable, funny and a good instructor. She's not lazy, and holds high expectations. One of those instructors you appreciate later. Provides plenty of resources. Lots of quizzes but easy A(retakes), as well as volunteer hours. Papers & Exams are hard, but she helps. Feedback is critical, but necessary for improvement. Well worth it!
When I went into professor Fong's class I wasn't expecting much but she blew me out of the water with her teaching style and understanding of circumstances, the class is synchronous and asynchronous if you want, and the material follows the book and lab if you put in a little effort passing is no problem in this class.
The term projects are time consuming and are centered around her hobbies. Leaves lots of feedback but she's a tough grader and will not let anything slide. A bit self-centered and condesending. Her D2L organization is poor and her lectures are hard to follow. Claims neurodivergence acceptance, but only has room for HER neurodivergence.
April has been one of my most memorable teachers in my career at PCC. They are extremely caring so if you are needing to take a class, you are bound to have an amazing experince with them.
Terrible. Her description for work, especially big papers, is not clear. She has different expectations for different students. Her expectations are entirely to high for a low level gen bio class. Claims lecturing doesn't allow students to retain info, then lectures for 3 hours straight by just reading slides off a projector.
Professor Fong tries to come off as initially extremely approachable and show an understanding of neurodivergence and learning styles but this is performative. No clear grading requirements are provided plus a complete lack of rubrics. D2L and lectures are unorganized/hard to follow. Claims to grade lower than necessary to "incentivize" hard work.
Lecture is bad. - mostly just reads PowerPoint - she talks about other things most of the time. Deadlines for assignments are very flexible and not too many assignments. But they take your time a lot. Tests are very hard. If you are gonna take this focus on pop-quiz and D2L quiz. Test are mostly from there.
She claims she uses the book, but she clearly doesn't when it comes to the test. she is downright rude and did not help me understand the mateiral. I had to teach myself. she took off two points when it was supposed to be extra credit on a test. that 2 points reduction lead me to a C when I couldve gotten a B-
I never know what she wants for our tests/projects. She will claim that she wants one thing and then once it comes to the grade she will take off points for the thing she asked. In our tests she finds any reason to deduct points. In class she will go off on tangents and not cover our material. If you want a good grade in biology dont take her.
The professor was clear in her grading and had made the course outstanding in her education. She loves her classes and genuinely wants to help you succeed and I would retake her again if I had the chance.
Never in my life has volunteer work been a mandatory requirement for a course. Between all of the quizzes, the multiple presentations due, the lab hours, and exams- where is the average working student to find 10 hours to give? You know its bad when the financial aid officer agrees its too much when you're checking to see if dropping is an option.
GPA was 3.75 - now 3.55 Every day I participated in class and worked closely with others for our group projects. I understood the subject/readings well, however when it came to the assignments there was no clarity at all that lead to mass confusion throughout my peers, also as dedicated and intelligent, who were all reporting the same experience.
My experience with Professor “April Anne" was a negative one. Despite her teaching experience, she had issues keeping professional boundaries. She showed emotional volatility and could flip from extremely cheerful to down right aggressive in a moment. This made the classroom environment extremely uncomfortable and kept me on edge around her.
Expect lots of pop quizzes and assignments in this class. Lectures can be dry, but focus on the quizzes and tests - they make up most of the grade. Use Unstuckstudy and the textbook to prep, as the expectations can be unclear.
this professor is extremely rude over email so i don't recommend emailing her anything. her lectures are confusing and labs are hard to follow as she doesn't do a great time aligning lab material to the lectures. don't recommend this professor.
This professor should retire. I have attended every lab, lecture, and study hard, and I will still get a C. She is very unclear about expectations and grading criteria. She also doesn't create a good learning environment. Don't ask her questions! She is very demeaning and rude. She has no helpful feedback whatsoever.
I would not recommended her at all. She's honestly a horrible teacher, in lecture and lab she does not teach anything she just tell stories completely irrelevant. She is very rude and condescending. She is very unclear about grading criteria, and what is due. Her lectures do not have anything to do with the texts. If you want to learn dont take her
Her emails can be passive aggressive and rude. She lacks the ability to provide guidance when students struggle to learn the materials. She said once in class that 'you need to suffer to learn.' My last issue with this professor is that she tends to treat her students like they're kids and not actual students which can be uncomfortable.
This professor is a very hard grader. She is very rude and unsympathetic. She does not give a rubric ever. So figure it out!
