very fun class
Very thorough, excellent professsor. However she can be a bit eccentric, and very moody. She expects a lot from her students. Homework every class, and several 200 word essays - in spanish!
The worst class I've taken at Miramar. Her expectations are unrealistic.
enjoyed this class
good teacher. lots of homework. makes you do essays in spanish. hard tests. willing to help anyone.
Her class is always busy and she keeps you doing things (which keepes you awake).Lots of homework, but it is graded easily.Study your study guides for the tests and you'll do fine. She is a nice lady but gets moody when people show up late. I recomend her
I had this teacher for both 101 and 102 and both times she has been inconsistent with the grading of homework and has a very moody temperment. Shes paranoid about students and their intentions and shes quick to jump to conclusions.I dont recommend her.
Treated students like we were in Kindegarten. I resented that very much. If you were tardy or left class early 3 times that was an absence. Come on!!! We're all adults here!!!
Sets students up to win, gives you all you need to pass, you have to do the work. Is a stickler for being on time, can understand that. College is a 'job.' Be on time.
Had her for Honors. Highly recom. Very easy, do hw as its big part of grade- hard tests if you dont study, VERY interesting lect. SHe is moody, but just be on time, and show her your studious side (helps alot as this is how she will interpret you)
great teacher, very helpful, easy to pass her class, strict on attendance
Very nice and fun! Loved her!
wow, this lady is a nut! dont get on her bad side! which means, never be late! dont miss a class. dont talk back or question her. she treats her students like kids. she'll put stickers on your tests and have you play games. but the good thing is that its a very straightforward class....
She is definitely high strung, but she's equally adorable. Very helpful and passionate about her subject. I learned a great deal about Spanish history and language from her. Her tests are pretty hard, but the class is well worth it.
She gives you everything that you need to know for the test, but the HW load is extremely high. There is alot more than just grammar in this class, so be prepared to learn about art and read poems, as well as analyse them, IN SPANISH! She can be moody and ALWAYS be on time because she can get mean.
the class is supereasy and straightforward, especially the honors class which is usually much smaller.however, there is a lot of homework and she takes attendance and tardiness very seriously! the class is not boring though, and you'll learn about mexican culture and art.
If you can not pass these classes you are stupid. Have never had a more straight forward teacher. Tells you everything you need to know for tests.
Great teacher, you'll learn alot. Makes class interesting. Very helpful, wants her students to succeed.
She's awesome, wants students to do well, offers A LOT of extra credit for those who need it, and teaches well. She's a little nutty, but she'll give you a good reason to laugh, take her for a language course!
Fabulous teacher. show up on time, participate in class, turn in work, study. gave extra credit. organized. fun class activities to get people participating. Handed out homework assignments by chapter ahead of time so you could work ahead if you wanted. I usually did mine for the week a few days ahead because of my busy schedule. by the time the final rolled around i needed a 25/100 to get an A
Great class, i really enjoyed it. there was a lot of work i'm not gonna lie, but they really help you out on chapter tests. she is very organized and really helpful. she prepares you very well for any tests so its easy to get a good grade!
Probably the best teacher I've ever had!!
wish she taught 102 this semester. really really peppy even early in the morning. she really enjoys teaching the subject.
What a fun class. Spanish classes tend to follow a normal trend of group activities and such, so I really enjoyed it. She's a nice teacher, a little bit shy, but she REALLY knows how to speak and teach it. Her 201 class was a blast, I wish I had taken her new 202 class last semester, because now somebody else is teaching it..
Awesome! She's a little nutty but who isn't? That's what I enjoyed the most, her nuttiness. You'll get such a great experience in her class!
I really enjoyed it at first. She is very, very subjective and likes her pets--Muffies and Biffies, and grades accordingly. This class was for personal interest and I wanted to earn a third degree in Spanish this time, but I have lost my taste for it after taking this course. She is nice at times, but can be rude to select students.
great teacher, cares about your grade and wants you to do good. the final is take home and she gives it 3 weeks in advance, DONT PROCRATINATE. im telling u from experience. the only bad thing is that she gives alot of hw. but their not hard. other than that shes a good teacher. im taking her for 102
They're--not their. Avoid if possible. Great reviews for the tests, but she is very inconsistent when grading. HW is easy, but does not help much. She spends more time on art and literature than on teaching the language. If she likes you, you will do well. If not, no matter what you do, it will not be good enough.
You WILL learn spanish. Tests are NOT hard, although she does grade all the nitty gritty stuff which can add up if you don't know your Spanish. Participation is 10%, DON'T MISS A SINGLE CLASS, she doesn't care if both your legs are broken, she will take off from your grade if you don't come. Also, she won't admit to mistakes. I got an A.
Attendance is paramount. You will undoubtly prove you are a slacker by showing up late or missing class. she WILL notice! You will learn spanish in this class she is very effective and requires a lot of work. This is truly a 5 unit class. She is the most helpful teacher I've had she's always happy to help during break or afterclass. She really cares!
takes attendance and following directions very seriously, NO leeway there. Good teacher though, very enthusiastic and uses a lot of games and classwork. If you participate and pay attention you'll find you don't have to study much for the tests. Will go out of her way to help you if you need it. Great teacher!
she is the hardest Spanish teacher ever. i thought my Spanish 101 teacher was hard but she was a lot harder. i dropped out before failing it. don't take her. you will regret it.
She was a little difficult at times. She seems to move through her lessons a little too quickly, and then expects you to know the material just like that. A very nice lady, but I think I could've found a better teacher for spanish, to be quite honest.
April is a very fun and caring professor. Strict on attendance. Easy HW everyday. She gave the final take home packet (research paper-not hard) on the first day of class! That and an easy oral to end the class. Goes over tests very well- gives pre-tests that are just like the real tests! Need to study a little, but I loved this class &gotan A+
To sum it up: she's obsessed with Spanish. It's her world, and she wants it to be yours, too. This is okay if you enjoy the language or are decent at it. But if you struggle, or are just attempting to pass, then look for another professor. LOTS of work, difficult and detailed tests. Nice woman, but I would only take her if I were a Spanish major.
Pretty tough grader, seems to grade many things unfairly and has many annoying attendance and homework policies (like you only get credit cor homework turned in at the beginning of class, or you are marked absent if you can only attend the first 1.75 hours of the class. She's more or less a nice person, but the book used is HORRIBLE and EXPENSIVE.
Unfairly tough grader, inconsistent, doesn't have a complete grasp of Spanish, yet gets defensive if questioned. Strict attendance policy enforced. Questions on tests are often open ended, but only one arbitrary specific answer is accepted. She cares about what she teaches, so that's a plus, but I wouldn't take this class again.
Strict attendance policies. Strict grading. Homework everyday. Honors class was tough. Had a lot of compositions. BUT! She is passionate and always there to help. She truly cares and wants you to do well. Tests are difficult though...marks off 1/2, 1/4 and whole pts. for EVERYTHING. I loved the class and would love to take her 102 class.
She is very helpful and friendly however, she has a weird point deduction that could affect your grade. She does have extra credit u can do 2 make up for it. She knows the language, culture, and history of what she teaches. Don't be late, don't miss class and participate a lot! She is very interactive, fun, and very helpful if you need it!
Not a good teacher at all. Span 101 is supposed to be the entry class and she assume you know the basic Spanish before entering her class. Her attendance is very straight will deduct your points if you come a bit late. She is very inconsiderate person and treat you like kindergarten kids. I got an A but I don't think I enjoy learning in her class
Ms. Koch is an excellent teacher and adheres strictly to her syllabus. However, she has a terribly controlling style in the classroom. For example, you may not be even 1 minute late. Additionally, she is extremely nervous as she lectures, which is a distraction. Plus, entering her office is nearly impossible as it is filled with clutter.
A fun energetic professor. Her work is easy & understandable. If you don't understand, she encourages you to ask questions and is more than willing to help you. She lays down the guidelines and grading system the first day of class and she sticks by them. So all is fair! She keeps the class active and social. It was a pleasure to be a part of it.
Fun class to be in,from the moment you step in the door you are immersed in spanish. Languages are hard for me to learn but by the end of the semester I was getting pretty good. Loved her class.
Got her in honors. I must say, she's a really good teacher. She brings props sometimes and teach her class very intuitive. You get to also get partnered up with different people to practice and get to know your class. She makes her class stress free environment make each of the students feel like a family. Best Spanish Teacher.
-She is an awesome professor with significant enthusiasm in Spanish. In her class, you not only study Spanish itself, but also learn about the food and cultures in Mexico. That's the beauty of her lecture. She's strict on grade but so clear about the direction on exams. She gives you practice exam which manipulates mostly the real one.
Her syllabus, hw, and essay packet are clear cut (everything you need to know in her class). Problem is she's sneakily condescending. I asked her about how I can get my spanish essays reviewed for grammar check, she said don't worry. "I know everyone and you are afraid. I'd be afraid too if I were stupid" My family confirmed it as an insult.
The class is challenging because it is a language but the professor helps you every step of the way. She stays after class if you need additional help, allows for make up points, and her practice exams are identical in format to the actual exams. She is a stickler for attendance and participation, but you need both in studying a language.
I have never met a teacher with as much passion for her class as Mrs. Koch! She really pushes you but yet gives you all the help you need to do well. You MUST attend class and she offeres extra credit if you miss. Spanish is never an easy class but I highly reccommend her because she makes it enjoyable and helps prepare you for exams well.
I've never taken a Spanish class before, & it was my first time having the Professor for 101! I remember being intimidated by her packets for homework & exams, but it really does help out & you can always refer back to it. Homework is easy, always do it to earn the points even if wrong. Her practice tests in class are the same format in the exam!
Professor Koch takes great care to foster an environment of mutual learning. She's an adorable goofball that makes every lesson fun, and you'll find that any mistakes you make on your assignments are graded softly but she won't hesitate to explain what was wrong and why (solely for your benefit, of course).
Appreciates & expects participation. Hwattendance is important. Dont miss a single hw. I loved her class, but u must work like any college class. Lots of handouts, which help a lot. Loves teaching & evident she takes a lot of time 2 prepare 4 classes. I recommend her if u are serious. Fun class! U will get an A, just work. Fair grader. Will help u
Fair grader; keeps the class interesting. She likes to mix things up and teach about culture so that makes it fun! Very clear about expectations. Gives study guides (help a lot). Prompt at responding emails and there if u need help outside of class. U will learn a lot and it will go by fast. Drops lowest testquiz. Forgiving with accents. Take her!
Awesome professor. Show up to class, keep up with the homework and you'll pass. Super helpful if you are struggling. Drops lowest test and quiz grade. Attendance matters, so show up and show up on time. Lots of extra credit, but it only counts for attendance issues. Oral final super easy too. Wish I could take her for the last spanish class!!
Professor Koch is supportive, helpful, and organized. She makes you feel comfortable speaking Spanish with your classmates because you do partnergroup work almost every day, and she uses games to encourage participation. She hands out detailed homework packets and practice exams that are very similar to the real exam. I would take her again.
She's adorable!! She's very sweet. I'd definitely take her for 102. She's understanding and she offers a lot of "accident forgiveness" points and extra credit. Talking in class and participation is mandatory as well as attendence. Definitely come for class or you will miss material.
She dedicates her time and effort to the class. Teaching is her passion. The games and class activities may seem like a waste of time, but it really helps with remembering the material. She make you feel comfortable about participating and expects it. Very strict on being late to class and takes attendance every day even after breaks.
This professor is very strict on her syllabus, late arrivals count as an absence which affects a large part of the participation grade. The class is very long and be ready for tedious amounts of homework. I wouldn't recommend taking this as a morning class at all (to avoid late arrivals & have time to finish the homework). Wouldn't take this again.
Hands-down my favorite teacher of the semester. She teaches through games, repetition, group exercises and powerpoints. Very fun. Her personality makes the long class easy to get through. The textbook is mandatory; comes with the workbook (also mandatory). Ask for help and she provides. Understands that pronunciation can be hard. Excellent teacher.
Pro: Do ALL the HW and do ALL the accident forgiveness and you will do very well in her class. She drops lowest exam. If you want to learn Spanish, take her class! Highly recommend! Con: group work-every class-ugh.
Professor Koch is awesome, she is so very nice and truly has a passion for the spanish culture as well as teaching it. Her energy is infectious she makes you want to learn, her teaching strategies work with all kinds of learners, and my learning doesn't come easily! took her for 102 because I loved her so much, wish she could teach 201 and higher!
She is a real gem! Very nice and respectful, gives a great deal of feedback yet she is not a tough grader! All tests were take home and her class does not require any textbooks because she will give you the copy of handouts that you need to study every time. She is very passionate about Spanish language and culture. But she wastes a lot of papers!
Tricked me into doing honors. You only get an A, D or F if you do honors with her. She didnt explain her grading system for her honors program. Absolutely insane
Took the Honors Contract in her evening Spanish 102 class. The only difference for Honors students are additional assignments/small projects that aren't too demanding. If you put in as much effort as she does in teaching as you do learning/working, then I am confident there is no reason anyone shouldn't get an 'A'.
Awesome professor. She truly is passionate about teaching. Love-love her teaching style. Shes respectful, engaging, and inspirational. More should teach this way. There is however, homework due at every class. Participation matters. Speak up to earn points! She offers accidental-forgiveness so you can earn back points you miss out on.
Profe Koch is by far the best Spanish professor I have ever had. She makes the class very enjoyable, and her work is very hands on so you will get a very good understanding of the material. You will have to show up to class or you will lose points. She is incredibly knowledgeable on the material and is a very friendly professor.
This class is effort, effort, EFFORT, but she is a great professor nonetheless. If you show up to class on time, participate and keep up with homework this class will be easy. She genuinely cares about everyone and wants her students to do well. She gives you ways to make up for lost points and is very forgiving with her grading.
Great teacher! Had her for 101 and 102. She really cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. Her practice exams ARE her exams and she prepares you well for the exam. Yes she will be rude to you if... youre always late, dont do the homework, dont show up or participate. I would kinda be annoyed too...
The best spanish teacher I have ever had. She truly cares for her students and wants everyone to pass. She is very helpful for office hours and always super flexible if you need help beyond that. Her study guides are always what she tests you on. Overall just an amazing person and great teacher!!
a really great teacher! Although there is quite a bit of homework, it's not too much and totally doable. She really values being on time and participation so be cautious of that! her practice exams are pretty much exactly like her normal exams, she never tries to trick you, they are really straight forward. She's great!
I'm going to take her for the third time for Span 201. I tried 2 other Spanish professors at Miramar it was a nightmare. I should've just took Koch to began with for 102. She is straight forward. The transition to online meant everything is through email and she was a more lenient grader that way.
Professor Koch is amazing! She is so passionate about Spanish culture and language and puts a lot of effort into her lectures and assignments. This course is fairly easy due to Koch preparing you so well for exams and homework. Do your homework and put effort into exams (which she gives plenty of time to do) and you will be sure to get an A!
I can't emphasize enough how great Professor Koch is. I took Honors, thinking it would be hard, but she made it like a piece of cake. Though she doesn't make the attendance mandatory bc of covid, I suggest attending her lectures bc you learn so much from them. She's very passionate about what she does! She cares abt her students & offers lots of EC
AMAZING SPANISH PROF!! She made 2.5 hour Zoom classes go by quick. Always gave us a 10-15 min break. She does like everyone to participate, but it isn't that hard. No pressure at all -- all exams were take-home. Super understanding, whole class loved her, definitely my favorite online class by far. I ended w/ a 100%, no out-of-class studying needed
DOES NOT RECORD ZOOM!! Tests are taken on your own & on your own time. 1-2 weeks to turn in with EC after every test. EC is attending a zoom then writing a small paragraph and the like. HW like in-class assignments. Honors was really easy. 4 honors essays (Graded based on effort not grammar & 300 words min) with tests and hw. NO CANVAS EMAIL ONLY!
While I think Prof. Koch was a fine teacher, I think I would've struggled a lot more had I not already been somewhat familiar with the basics. I feel as though there were some subjects that deserved a little more attention than they got. I also think she teaches in a way that makes things more complicated than they need to be.
Prof Koch is organized, kind, and obviously passionate about teaching Spanish. She teaches fully in Spanish, so I did struggle to keep up in class, but her assignments are easy enough to get through and get an A. Her teaching style is a little odd, but most students in the class seemed to do well. Definitely taking her for 201 next.
This was my second class I've taken with Professor Koch. She is such an amazing professor who really cares about her students' success! She makes learning Spanish very straightforward and easy. She provides fantastic feedback and all of her exams are take homes with your lowest one being dropped. Highly recommend taking her!
Profesora Koch runs her class with so much enthusiasm and wants each of her students to do well. If you immerse yourself into the class and go into it with a positive mindset, you will not only do well but you will also have fun. Favorite Professor so far at Miramar.
I love Profesora Koch. You could tell she's very passionate about Spanish and wants her students to do the best. I took honors and personally it was really easy. She is very caring and tries to make things easier to understand. You go over a section certain times and it really helps with your memorization.
Professor Koch really does care about Spanish and teaching her students. That being said, you HAVE to be there in her class or you will not pass. She also does not use canvas, rather you have to email her the homework to turn it in. Just take the class a bit seriously and you'll be fine, lots of work with partners.
Very passionate teacher but I took this class and submitted a writing portion that was written by two other people same as I who were fluent in Spanish and some lived outside the country and still received a 50% on the writing alone. Noticed other students that wrote worse quality work got better grades. I would say she was an inconsistent grader.
Professor Koch is good at teaching Spanish, her policy means you are allowed to take exams home and work on them with the homework packets she provides. That being said, she does show a lot of movies in her classes and the content of these movies can be a bit triggering (and she gives zero warnings about these). Lots of homework, be in class.
She is a great professor. Always helps, especially if you come early.
She was a good teacher, there's ALOT of hw & attendance does count toward ur grade. The one thing i disliked is she had NOTHING on canvas &would give us a bunch of papers & we couldnt see our grade unless we emailed her. She's on the older side so I get not being very tech savy but she would give us like 10 pieces of paper a day
She demonstrates a strong commitment to both her lectures and homework assignments, which significantly enhances the learning experience for her students. I also appreciated how she incorporated cultural elements into the lessons, making the learning experience even richer. I highly recommend her if you're considering taking Spanish.
Be ready to work hard in this class. However, she is an amazing professor and I learned A LOT from her class.
very easy class, workload is light, exams are straightforward based loosely on the homework. you get to learn a bit about cultures from different spanish countries on some days that kept the class engaging
She's caring but no leniency if life comes up: emergency, traffic, work. Audio quizzes start 1st min of class she won't let you make them up. If you're late/absent to class you'll be docked participation points. Super lecture/HW heavy. 7 extra credit opps but they're time-consuming. Discouraged from continuing Spanish:( Paced like an upper division
This class is an easy A if you're on top of homework. Exams are take home and you have a week to do them. Biggest thing is that her attendance is mandatory and she is strict on it. However, the trade off for a low stress grading scheme is fair for what she expects. As a non native I felt like this class really helped and wasn't stressful.
Great class, daily homework.
