Nice enough. Not very conducive to socratic discussion-somewhat forceful with her opinion, instead of letting discussion flow freely between students(expect to raise you're hand if you want to talk). Really into film studies, so if you're a film buff and like relating themes in literature and movie, you'll have some good convos.

She graded reasonably and her office hours are super helpful. In the in-class discussions, she takes mediocre comments and explains how they are relevant. She also sometimes includes films as part of the "readings" instead of just literature since she was a film professor before.

OK professor. She is always leading the discussion in class, which, depending on your mannerisms, is either good or bad. Expects students to write at a much higher level than most are capable of (we get it, you have a Ph.D., but we don't, and as such, we don't have the writing experience that comes with one). Also seems a bit condescending.

Overall fair grader. She is extremely helpful and gives great feedback on how to improve your writing ability, and she'll guide you into the "right" direction for what to include your papers. I didn't expect to love this class, but I did: great conversations that allowed everyone to participate and really interesting readings. 171 was a bit tougher to get through because I liked the readings less, but discussions were still really good. Dr. Miller is respectful of different view points and cares about students. Go to office hours!

I was sort of 'meh' on the idea of this class at first, but it really grew on me. She does fun things in class, like had us write poems based on The Pillow Book. We had some good laughs as people read out their poems. It wasn't the same discussion structure every day. She gave great feedback in office and on papers.

Dr. Miller is genuinely just an incredible, kind, and caring person, and you can tell that she truly cares about the success of her students. She creates a classroom environment that encourages individuals to share their own unique ideas and gives students a platform to foster friendships with their peers. Dr. Miller is incredible!!!

Dr. Miller has been one of best teachers I have had so far. She is really passionate and kind. She is a good grader and gives a lot of good feedback as she truly cares about your success. I joined her class the next semester but I wish I had taken her in HON171. Dr. Miller makes class enjoyable and I will genuinely miss taking her class.

best human event professor ever. I switched teachers for second semester and it was the best decision ever. Dr. Miller cares about her students and she makes this class the best it can be. Definitely take her!

I was ready to give up on Barrett. I couldn't find someone to help w/ thesis work and I felt like I wasn't being supported by faculty. I took Dr. Miller's summer class on a whim because i needed those upper-div credits. The class has been ++ and she's so supportive. I now have a thesis project, a committee, and am excited about my project!

I had Dr. Miller for both HON 171 and HON 272. I can honestly say that she is the main reason my writing has improved drastically. She gives amazing feedback and makes it very clear what to improve on for the next paper. Make sure to participate in discussions and go to office hours if possible because those helped more than anything!

She is a good professor, but can be very passive aggressive at times to students which can be seen as degrading. She requires a lot of different reading materials. After every lecture, I feel more knowledgable and confident that I fully understood what I had to read. She cuts off people when they are speaking but can make you feel insightful.

Professor Miller created an environment that made it really easy to talk to each other and share our opinions. It was a great class and the texts were really wonderful! As far as human event professors go, you can't get much better. I really loved this course and highly recommend it to any incoming freshmen.

I loved this professor! A highschool friend suggested I take Dr. Miller and I'm so glad I listened. She was engaging, sympathetic & super-helpful with papers during office hours. I'm really looking forward to spring. We'll read more modern stuff & I think that will make me like the class even more!

Engaging, eloquent speaker, cares for students. Has lots of office hours. She only has 2 full essays, which is pretty easy for a honors class. Spurs lots of insightful discussion, helps you think outside the box. You have to be on top of your game, though, to be on her good side. Always come prepared w/ books/rough drafts & participate.

Most of the class is just participating in discussions with 2 essays and a "half essay." As long as you're prepared for class and show up consistently you won't fail. I highly recommend attending her office hours as there's a lot of good information you can get on a paper before submitting. Avoid sitting in the corner during discussions.

I want to preface by saying Dr. Miller is very intelligent, but she is consecutively passive aggressive and comes across as condescending. You need to see things the same way as her or she will likely not regard you highly. Participation is horribly graded, class relies on 3 papers and her feedback is subpar. No real grading rubric, rather a guide

I loved Human Event and Dr. Miller. She gave great feedback on papers (lots of detail and clear suggestions) and she was really accessible outside of classes. Go to office hours! they're so helpful and she shows real excitement about your ideas. I'm taking HON 272 with her this spring and looking forward to it.

She chooses good material for the class and her discussions are interesting, although she talks a lot and sometimes dominates her own discussions. A very kind and caring person, someone who's good to interact with.

You need to come to class. I participated in almost every class I attended but missed about 4ish classes and that tanked my participation grade. Papers are also pretty strictly graded. You have to make her happy or else you won't do well.

Professor picked interesting material for most of the lectures. Sometimes she can talk a lot before the discussion starts but for the most part it's just background information and isn't that big of a deal. Gives lots of feedback on essays but grading is pretty fair. I would recommend either going to either TA or her office hours if you have time.

Out of all of the human event teachers, Miller seems to be one of the best ones. We have 2 assignments a week that are pretty self explanatory. She talks you through everything and is pretty responsive. Participation and attendance are required.
