Coolest teacher ever! we watch a movie and write an informal writing every week. One midterm based on the everyweek readings & the final is writing a 4-5page paper and to present about the paper! Everyweek readings seem long but based on easy materials. Very easy class and super COOL teacher!
very funny teacher...her projects are really cool. there is no textbook b/c she doesnt like it...she never gives an assignment unless she does it first. her assignments are due mondays and are very fun and easy...highly recommend...no textbook
ALWAYS GO TO CLASS! It's really easy and she usually lets you out early. Attendance can screw up your grade. Nothing hard at all for this class; all you need is your creativity! Homework is due every Monday. No text books! :)
No textbook, no test, no midterm, no quizes, and NO FINALS. come to class and participates. Has informal free response to topic discuss in class. EASY CLASS
:>!
absolutely hot!u r going to love it!an easy A
Excessive amount of work, even more than EWRT, write a blog 7-10 thousands works. Waste of time. Easy, but too much work for a GE class
not an easy grader on essay
She is amazing. She did activity like visiting malls and wasted lots of her own time to help us and made us do blogs. She grouped us into different groups and discussed every week (Sometimes everyday). And there are no tests, quizzes. She covered lots of variety of things
Makes the real world so much more interesting. Engaging class, easy work, no tests, no writing assignment more than 1000 words, interesting topics discussed! A class for basically everyone. LOVED IT.
The class is like this, 2 essyas, H/W every week, lots of reading, 2 presentations, and video project. no midterms or finals. no textbook. all you have to do is attendning the class and do your HW. at the end i think there is too much HW for a GE class. going to try Salamender for Humi 1 lol this coming spring
This teacher is awesome! Very interesting and that is coming from someone who is not a school person. Work was not too much, NOT EXCESSIVE. Your homework is going to arcades and blogging. Easy just show up and she likes when you read syllabus. I missed a lot of classes but she let me earn points back. Very passionate and fun
Nice prof, interesting and passionate. Shes really smart and informative on the subject. She wants her student to learn but not using exams to scare us into learning. Our final were substitute with a group video project. Highly recommended!
Pretty easy. Sense of humor. She cusses throughout lecture so if your christian you may get offended! Got a B.
I was pleasantly surprised by this course, as I had no idea what it would be about. Berney ended up being a fun teacher with a great sense of humor! Her class was not dull in the least and really opened my eyes to the ways of society. My only complaint was she'd dock a chunk of points on essays and not always explain why :/!
Totally cool and unique teacher, very fun classes. Broadened my view on the world. No textbook, no tests just written assignments. Two 800 word blog entries and three shorter entries. I recommend it.
If you are an ESL student, here is a little advice: Avoid her! This is because she talks so fast and you will not be able to catch up. The mid-term was very hard and the final was ok. Her blog grading was not consistent.
Berney: "How many of you want to have kids in the future?" *half the class raises their hands* Berney: "Well how do you know you want kids if you've never had any before?" BUUUUUUURN and mind BLOWN. She's great, take her class!
There were a few cool things about this class, but overall it was a waste of time. Too relaxed/easy. She's a cool person, though. I love her fashion sense. If you're for some reason coming from a competitive four-year college like I was, you won't like the atmosphere in the class or the coursework. But it's De Anza. I just took it for transferring.
She's kind of rude if you ask questions about grading and whatnot. She's a good teacher, like her lecture is interesting, she's just not very good at interacting with students. Only 3 blog post essays less than 800-1,000 words.
Enjoyed ever so often but it was an easy class. Just attend class every day and take the notes from the slides. The test are open book and they are from the notes you take during class.
Professor Berney is a very considerate and funny teacher. Her lectures are interesting and it's an easy class as long as you don't skip classes.
Great creative minds class. One of the best classes and professors I have had at De Anza. Really interesting and relevant discussions. Just do the readings and come to class and you will get an A+. Midterm and final are both open note.
The class is pretty easy. Not a lot of work is assigned outside and in class. However the class can get boring.
Class is easy. Lots of opportunities to fix your grade and make up stuff. But the class is boring and she is a little unclear on stuff
Right off the bat, she came off as a super chill teacher- like the type you could joke around with and be a friend with. She was chill & super understanding. Her lectures are easy to understand and activities incorporated into the class are relevant. Class workload isn't heavy and overall, I had a good experience with Ms. Berney. Would recommend :)
If you read during the weekend you will definitely pass her class! She gives mini quizzes every Monday based on the readings assigned, but you can use your text. They are lengthy, but they are interesting! Take home final and your final is a project. Super cool, chill class!
the class was super easy, however only as long as you read the material. weekly readings and quizzes based off the reading. questions on the midterm and final are likely going to be from the quizzes. days where she shows movies are optional. plus she's funny and the material was interesting. overall, she's cool.
She is definitely one of the funniest and chill professors ever. Her class on pop culture teaches you to look at social media very differently. This class is super easy. There are weekly quizzes based off of readings/videos she assigns but they are not difficult at all. You also don't need a textbook for this class. There's no midterm or final too.
Her creative minds class is very fun and interactive. It's so easy it won't even feel like a class. Her teachings are a mixture of art, philosophy, and psychology. She is extremely funny and not at all boring, so expect great lectures. There's not really a midterm and the final's easy. She gives you lots of ways to make up your grade. Very flexible
She was the best teacher I had at De Anza. We had really easy weekly quizzes and we mainly watched movies/ documentaries in class and she would have readings related to it. We had a final but we could work in groups for it or turn in an independent assignment. Overall I loved her as a teacher I wish i could take her again.
She's the most fun professor ever at De Anza. Her lectures are very interesting, and her course criteria is easy. You have weekly readings, which aren't so bad. There's also lots of fun creative projects you'll do in this class. You'll learn a lot, and she'll definitely change your outlook and perspective on things. Overall, really great professor.
She is the chillest teacher I have taken so far, she is very straight with you and is willing to work with you in case you miss class, her class is not hard in the way that the subject is hard, but her expectations of your work are high, you have to keep up with her reading in order to know what to do in class, your effort determines your grade
I'm crushin but she's hands down the best professor I've ever had.
Best professor I've ever had! She is so much fun and her class is very interesting. This class does have quite a bit of work (weekly assignments and projects). However, the projects are a lot of fun. If you try and you put effort into your work, then you will get an A. I wish I could take another class with her! I highly recommend taking her!
I like this class because it requires creative thinking and to make actual products such as painting, drawing and others. I am kind of not good with that, but this class helps me to overcome those fears and push me to try something new each week. If you want to learn creativity, this is a fun class to choose. Good Luck!!!
Berney is absolutely wonderful! I loved her classes and lectures and she tries very hard to connect with each of her students. I went to class feeling more relaxed and comfortable because it was not difficult but when I left I actually gained some new knowledge about the world. I wish she taught more classes at De Anza, she is def. worth taking.
Her class is fairly easy, with weekly projects and notebook entries. Make sure you try on the notebook entries otherwise they will lower your grade. She is also really nice and understanding.
Tough grader. So much work for a GE class. She's energetic and passionate about her work. BUT, there is a lotttt of work! Especially on note book entries. It's like writing an essay every week. Plus, she's a tough grader so the entries better be long and good. Not an Easy A or B, so be careful. She thinks B is already good enough. Don't skip class!
She is a great teacher and knows about what she is doing, but don't take her HUMI1 if you're just looking for GE class. Lots of work every week, creative projects are mostly fun and simple, short feedback, the notebook entry just take a lot of times. She didn't give out the grading criteria until the very end of the quarter aswell.
Apryl is a great Professor she really cares about her students and her creative projects really helped me de stress and they werent difficult at all! Her notebook entries are easy as long as you follow the directions if you want an easy fun humanties class take apryl!
Totally disaster. You will learn NOTHING if you take her class. She just talking without thinking and make people do some useless stuff. It's not even funny but pretty boring. I don't wanna have her class anymore. She also asks people to bring food and materials for class. It's MONEY AND TIME WASTING! Don't waste your MONEY AND TIME AGAIN after me!
Really engaging class. Dr. Berney is an excellent professor.
Apryl is really nice but she assigns way too much reading. Currently taking HUMI 6 at the same time as EWRT 2 and she assigns more reading than my EWRT 2 class.
I was so lucky to start at DeAnza with her class which made me very motivated. She is amazing and super fun, the other thing I really liked about her class is that its making you think, I mean for real ! I loved her and the class. If you are looking for a fun class and you want to learn something then you should take thisone for sure.
This is the second time I've had professor Berney and she is a great teacher. Although the readings/assignments may be a bit tough, she is always willing to help you with whatever question you have and is very flexible with due dates as well. She is easy to communicate to.
Really harsh, speeds out of class. Dont take if you want a good grade.
The least interesting and most confusing class. It almost seems like the professor didnt have a lesson plan before class. I read a lot and it was difficult for me to handle that much. Tried to get help but she is hard to reach. No grading criteria, assignments are hard to do the way she wants them. There are easier and better profs out there.
Really unclear grading criteria. She grades really arbitrarily, takes off points and provides an explanation but no rubric so its really hard to improve. You have to read a lot, but the reading schedule is disorganized, so class discussions are a mess. Id really recommend other humanities faculty on campus. She doesnt offer extra credit/re-dos.
I loved this class and Prof. Berney. The work is evenly spaced throughout, and mostly involves creative projects. There is some light reading and writing that goes along with the projects, and the occasional movie to watch. Sometimes, I didnt see where these projects were going at first, but they were amazingly useful once I completed them.
She is one of the best teachers that Ive had. Theres discussion posts + quizzes weekly, but if you do the reading its easy points. There are a total of 5 projects which are fun to do! Simple videos or just photo taking, a reflection, and done! Really easy and fun class, as long as youre willing to put in the work.
This class was way harder than it had to be. I felt like creativity was stifled. Take Sals humanity courses if youre looking to have freedom without being penalized for not understanding her non existent grading metrics and confusing assignments
I was a straight A student up to this class. Really disappointed. I think my failure in class was due to messiness of what we were learning and also it was really hard to understand what she wanted in assignment. I felt lost for a majority of class. Really do not recommend.
Class was ok. Thought it was pretty boring though. Didnt learn anything and she kind of rambled on.
Berney is awesome!
I took Berney's Creative Minds class, and everything she taught is relevant to our current situation. She had us sew and prepare for the end of the world! Her class is fun and practical.
Good class and professor. Prof. Berney helped me get into grad school. Just do the work and ask questions when you don't understand something.
She was a good teacher, knew her stuff. Not an easy A class, but was not too hard. Overall, I would recommend taking a class with her if they offer it. She is a pretty nice teacher but definitely not a pushover.
I wouldnt recommend taking her for GE requirements. Way too much work and stress for a class that isnt really teaching you much. There are a lot of better and easier options out there. She is also a super tough grader, I work really hard, but she just expects a lot but doesnt give clear directions.
Not an easy A, but Berney is still a really good prof. She doesn't dumb down her stuff. She always responds to emails and even looked at drafts of my work because I was worried about my grade. She is very clear about what she wants on assignments.
Good class. Professor's directions and expectations are clear. I liked doing the heart project. No exams!
My least favorite class I have ever taken at De Anza. I highly recommend you consider taking someone else. The Professor is scattered , loud, distracted, and uncaring.
One of the most creative professors on campus. She holds high expectations for your work in her class. I loved the projects we did. Im excited to take her Pop Culture class this summer.
Apryl Berneys Creative Minds class was the highlight of my year. We did simultaneously read (2) books but the activities and discussions were well thought out and a lot of fun! The class was a safe and encouraging place for people to express themselves and dip into their creative prowess. I would take again without a doubt!
Easy stress free G.E. Professor is awesome responds to all emails. The class only consisted of three things, discussions, fun creative projects, and "quizzes". The quizzes aren't timed and can be done anytime before the due date, they are based on 2 books we read throughout the class. There are no essays, the most writing is for the discussions.
Took the online class. There's only weekly quizzes and discussions BUT you have to read the weekly chapter, watch the occasion video/documentary, or read an additional article to answer the questions on the quizzes/to do the discussions. Also no midterm but there's a paper & final project. She gives good feedback and replies soon. Learned a lot!!
Lots of work but an easy A.
Professor is very knowledgeable and her feedback is helpful. Assignments are fun and require you to apply what you are learning, rather than just give your opinion. U do read but its a reasonable amount especially when compared to other Humi classes.
I couldn't keep up, she goes really fast. I couldn't keep track of the assignments and the directions were
I enjoyed taking this Professor's class. She was really helpful and responded to emails ASAP. The feedback she gave on assignments and quizzes was helpful to meet her standards. Also, I felt that the amount of work she gave was manageable.
I liked Berneys class. Her assignments are fun to do. She gives good feedback and was very organized.
This whole class is a disorganized mess and the Professor could care less about her students. I had an A the whole class and then on a last project (she changed 2 projects into 1) my grade dropped to an A-. I tried to talk to her because I submitted my project early to re-do a part of it and she said she doesnt have the time. Take Sal instead!!!
Apryl Berney. She really made me feel good about myself when she graded my work. She took the time to write paragraphs on what she loved about my writing, and asked further questions about my work. By her doing that it really made me feel like I was doing something right. It actually made me want to write even BETTER!
wow. honestly speechless at how bad this class is. There are so many reasons to not take it, so I'll just save you the time by saying TAKE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR.
Wow I never leave reviews but this is the worst class at De Anza, and Ive been here for two years. Spare yourself
good class. good prof.
The course work is really manageable. You have a worksheet and a discussion every week/two weeks, where you need to read a textbook chapter, in addition to reading articles or watching a video/movie. A majority of the worksheet is multiple choice or short answer straight from the content you read/watch. It sounds like a lot, but its really easy.
Her class is very manageable, consists of discussion posts, worksheets, and projects based on the reading. Her class is fun, even if it's asynchronous.
Not hard but messy. Requires a good amount of weekly involvement. Took Spring 22, we hade 3 creative projects that were worth 100 points each and 6 worksheets & 6 discussion posts worth 50 points. You better plan ahead for the projects as they are very time consuming except for the last one. We read from two textbooks which were boring.
I took this prof in Spring 22' and it wasn't bad. I understand that some students may dislike the amount of reading she provides, but she gives you a whole week to complete assignments under the weekly modules. But be sure to give time or plan out when you'll be doing her assignments because it is long and time-consuming.
I took her for HUMI1 in the winter semester. Her classes were accurate to the goal of the course, but yet incredibly fun and not boring. Easy to pass this class/get an A if you just show up and do the work that she assigns, and most of them is creative work which is not boring.
I did this class in the Winter of 2022. Amazing professor, very caring, an easy to score class. Professor is very nice and understanding, the work is straightforward.
Prof Berney is very chill, kind, and understanding. Her class is a load of work but it's rather enjoyable. As long as you can manage your time, you'll be fine.
Weekly assignments and readings have been engaging, and in-person discussions are thought-provoking. However, I wish for a more productive interaction with other students. Often, only 10 students or fewer show up to class, which limits diverse perspectives. Midterm and finals were very fun and inspirational.
Her creative minds class was great, almost every project was food related. Weekly assignments and biweekly larger projects. I would recommend taking her creative minds class for a nicely paced and fun online class.
i took pop culture class. prof is so nice and caring. responds fast by emails. just a chill class. her assignments can be lengthy sometimes and makes you think. but like thats with every class. you need to have a netflix for her class though (specifically pop culture) love her, take her!
professor berney is very kind and helpful, she always gives good feedback and gives us so many chances to get good grades. she accepts late work , just email her. Lots of work and worksheets are a bit heavy. video assignments are sometimes time consuming. overall I think professor berney is great
Professor Berney was amazing, caring & nice! I took her in person creative minds class and I don't regret it at all. It is very easy, attend class and whatever activity you do counts as the discussion post. Quizzes can be time consuming but they are not hard. It takes a while to watch all the videos and answer the questions but it is fairly easy.
I took her async class. She responds to emails in 5 mins and is ready to give u an extension if needed. I had to write 1 discussion post and take a 25-point open quiz based on readings and videos assigned every week, but the material is interesting, and u actually learn from this class. SO TAKE HER CUS I MISS TAKING HER CLASS.
