You ever get off the bus and think this class is gonna suck. Getting off the bus to go to this class is like purgatory except you dont get the choice of heaven and hell. You go straight to hell. Good luck, very hard grader
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. No one received a good grade from this professor, no matter how much effort they put in their papers. His prompts are ridiculously difficult, especially compared to other professors. He doesn't really want you to write about the texts, just about something "interesting" or "provocative"
Prof doesn?t take a lot of b*llsh*t, but is fair if you act like serious student. He does expect people to do the work and is insistant that good writing happens in the re-writing. Once I started to listen to what the assignment actually were, and spend time doin? them, my grade went from a C to a B+. I?d take another class with him.
You have to take Writing-101 Expos at Rutgers. Its not a fun class, but it DID made my writing better. I think it showed in my other classes as well... why wasn't I taught how to write in High School... McElhinney really helped, when hed put the papers on the overhead and comb thru them line by line... he's detailed oritented, but you've got to b
Class was interesting - McElhinney knows tons about his subject and really knows how to write good... he was always willing to give extra help and he let me rewrite an F paper for a better grade, which still was an F, then he had me write it a 3rd time and I gots a C+... he is tough on papers but generous with the oral presentation + journal grades
Tough grader, I worked really hard on the assignments. But the class material was interesting and he seemed to know a lot about the subject...Not an easy class, but my writing definitely got better.
I took his class in the fall and it made me a better student in the spring... more teachers who care, like this one, are needed in school...
why do such cool and interesting teachers get stuck teaching a boaring class like Expository Writing.... they should like McElhinney redesign the program and reading assignments
McElhinney knows so much about everything... the dude's like a waling Wikipedia. I LEARNED SO MUCH IN THIS CLASS. Fun class.
McElhinney's a perfect mix of teacher and friend?calls students on their slacking?always willing to go the extra mile. Loved how everything was cross referenced. I am a better writer because of this class.
McElhinney's 201 taught me everything I should have learned in Expos 101 but didn't.... no BS, just practicle advice with a dash of humor... he must love teaching
so much that I learned this spring (researching, editing, rewriting) has helped with my summer writing course at Bard, McElhinney suggested that I do more creative writing and Im glad he did...
i was behind last semester and had to take summer school, having the 201 with McElhinney last spring caught me up an all this sh-t I wish they told me in high school
We spent a lot of time working on and researching the topics in the class. We had group discussion which helped my understanding of the assignments. Conferences with the instructor was really helpful and kept me on track with my work. His best quality is the engagement of all students in a discussion. Everyone had equal say.
I don?t find my other course work so daunting anymore. I can do it now because of how this class inspired me.

We spent a lot of time working on and researching the topics in the class. We had group discussion which helped my understanding of the assignments.
His best quality is in explaining things and generally good class discussion. It gave me the ideas to think about different side of issues and analyze them better.
McElhinney is effective and got the message of revision across pretty well. It was a well designed class that consisted of a lot of work, but it was manageable. It taught me to plan ahead and organize.
Teacher wasn't extremely helpful, but had a great personality. He is devoted to the subject and really hopes for the best for his students. It's too bad he's alot harder than any of the expos teachers at Rutgers. Avoid him if possible.
The course influenced me greatly because it expanded my vocab and the way I express my thoughts on paper. It made me a better researcher and my analysis of my thought greatly improved. McElhinney enabled my thought to become more clear and concise.
The course structure was very good. Really nothing I would change about this class or the Professor McElhinney in that he is fair and reasonable with his actions.
His best quality is his knowledge on subject matter and his interest in our projects. He was great, funny instructor and I had to take another writing course it would be with him.
I thought it was great that we able to work in the computer lab. Peer review and his comments were beneficial. So far he was the best writing instructor I?ve had.
One of the best professors I've had. He takes great interest in students and is very enthusiastic about the subject matter. I highly recommend him.
Very harsh grader, but a good teacher. Analytic essay was horrible, presentations fun and easy, final paper was good due to the many drafts done. attendance mandatory.
I learned a great deal about forming an opinion and analysis. The instructor was my favorite this semester because of his influence of learning and research.
McElhinney leads a great discussion, that are helpful for building research papers. He is excited about what he is teaching. And I got excited about doing research. He also taught us a lot about how to use the library.
McElhinney?s best quality as an instructor had to be his willingness to teach the course and his interest in the topic. It helped that he gave us some many examples. He made writing fun.
McElhinney was very helpful when it come to discuss our papers. Overall he is a great instructor. He really knows the course material. Pushed me to try and improve my writing. Helped me think critically and link ideas.
Andrew M is challenging and very knowledgeable. I feel like I understand better how to research specific material and organize and analyze texts. I am able to think more analytically. I like that McElhinney has insight from experience.
The course was really interesting and fun. I believe that the pre-assignments before the Final Paper really did help us prep for it, and I feel that the elapsed time for each assignment due was more effective than Expos. The revision and peer reviewed helped and it was the multiple opinions that were helpful.
I loved this class! He knows what he's teaching and he is a fair grader. He made writing fun and interesting. We had little work assignments which he gave good grades. You should take his class! (Just kidding...he is a harsh grader, so much work, hard to understand the requirements, and I got bad grades ALL THROUGHOUT!. Don't take his class )
Fun and interesting topic. Dr. Andrew is a fair grader and displays a significant amount of knowledge on the subject. He pushed me to improve my writing and to think critically. The time needed to do assignments and research was reasonable. This class has also made the research process and writing papers much less intimidating.
No clue how this guy has gotten great reviews. If you post a discussion and your submission doesn't follow a very specific format, HE WON'T ACCEPT IT. If you send an email and you don't attach a .doc, .pdf, AND post the whole text in the message body, HE WON'T ACCEPT IT. Or if you attach .docx instead of .doc, HE WILL NOT ACCEPT IT. He is a tyrant!
Just... don't take his class unless you have PHD writing skill. Even if you personally ask him for help, he won't help you. He is also very rude and extremely disrespectful.
Worst professor one can ever encounter.
he expects you to work, but also gives a lot. Always at office hours. Talk to him about assignments and ask questions and you'll be fine.
This guys is very arrogant and tough. Wonder Who gave this man a professorship cuz he doesn't deserve it. He doesn't even help students or care about students who are struggling. Horrible! He will destroy all your hopes in getting good GPA.
Great class. Lots of information. Good class discussions, makes everyone join in.
Cool class, almost too cool, it was fun to go to. But serious too, Not just about horror, but culture and what is culture in horror. The writing part was okay, I wish it was just lectures
Good survey course, nice mix of historical and theory. Great writer, taught a lot of about writing happening in the rewriting. Leaned about what teachers look for.
I liked this class being a hybrid. No busy work. Peer review was very helpful but nothing was better than the Prof's direct feedback. Good at office hours, gave me an extension when my Mom died.
I took this class because I want to write for TV, and I thought knowing about TV would help. This class was more about TV theory, which was good, but not quite how to write for TV. That said, thinking about TV is another way to think about the stories you can tell with or on TV, so it is helpful. I liked the TV episodes he showed us.
Rutgers doesn't have a public speaking course, but this writing course working in a lot of being called on in class and then an Oral Pres. Dr. kept making us tell our project in 50 words or less, it was hard, but then I went on a job interview, and you know what, I learned something, and got hired. I think the class helped me get the job.
A lot of work, but not busy work. I wasn't doing well at first and got called into a meeting, but it wasn't to get yelled at, it was to get me back on trak. I might have dropped otherwise. I don't like horror film, but this class was more than just horror movies, we learned to look for horror in everything. Horror is everywhere and everybody.
Prof is incredibly consistant !
Got an "A" - good class. Funny class.
Good class and good prof. He definitely expects you to think for yourself but he's really helpful and excited about the subject. I think this class really helped my writing get better. Fun discussions!
The Lit Reviews received better grades than my essays, not a big deal but I wish it was the other way. I am definilely analyzing and debating things better. I am more natural at entering debates considering any topic. Good class.
I enjoy the small class size because group discussions are more informative and enjoyable. Prof is passionate about writing and television. I can now connect more with ideas which helps with analysis.
I enjoyed the hybrid set up and teaching methods. Wish there was more group work in the first few weeks for brainstorming. It was great that Dr. M was visibly relaxed and not afraid to joke around. I'm a writer and this writing class improved my writing for other classes. Coming up with a topic from scratch gave us room to think.
I think this course was great. Dr. Andrew really knows how to interest in what he teaches. I interpret readings now at a higher level.
Effective online assignments keep you on pace. I liked that. Comments on paper drafts were great.
It has taught me to read more carefully and to delve more deeply in to my readings and to understand the contextual information.
as a hybrid the online forum helps tremendiosley. I feel as though I can look toward that to ask any questions or gain clarification. I also think that the lit review help improve my analysis of text.
The requirements for each assignment are very clear. Dr. McElhinney is super detailed oritented. MAde me more that way too.
The instructor clearly lays out what is required... effective... focused... improved my writing... helped me deeply connect ideas...
Pretty effective class. Good group discussions, informative and enjoyible. Passionate instructor. I am trying to be more analytical in my writing and reading as a thinker I connect more ideas together which helps with analysis.
great feedback, pushes you, I am a better writer now
I enjoyed the hybrid set up and teaching methods. Prof Andrew is visibly relaxed and not afraid to use humor and I say that engages students better than being dry. Class provoked me to to improve my writing in my other classes. Coming up with a report topic from scratch gave us room to think.
I think this course was great. He really shows an interest in what he teaches. I am slowly improving my skills. I now interpret readings at a higher level.
good class, somewhat hard grader, helpful in office hours, also will skype with students or phone conference if you can't make office hours, which is nice because I worked right after class
Loved this class. Good teacher. You have to be independent as a learner with him. Will help you, but won't do the work or the thinking for you.
Wow, smart and ultra relaxed, a teacher that actually knows how to teach AND gives meaningful feedback AND isn't blowhard. I thought I was headed for a "C" and I addressed the notes he gave me on my paper and I got a B+.
this is the type of class I actually thought about when I wasn't in it, now it's done and I'm still thinking about it - that's say something. . . a lot
i learned a lot in this class, got beyond 'like and 'don't like' - who knew movies could be so serious a thing to thing about - we really do live in a global media culture - I'd take another class with McElhinney
The class is really great, his feedback on papers is so helpful. I wish Dr. Andrew was my private tutor.
Smart and funny, makes you work hard, a bit reading crazy, but learning be fun here with McElhinney at Rutgers!
Best class ever. Can't wait to go each week! Very fair.
He loves what he teaches and he has great taste in course materials. Class discussions are unexpected in where they go, but McElhinney always has the connections. Very funny guy.
I am so sorry this class has to end in December. It's been the best ever. I learn so much and every week I am challenged in a new way. I bet this is what Grad School is like. I feel so lucky to have found this class at Rutgers.
Not just a film class, but a way to think about culture via media, really genius stuff. I feel smarter from having taken this class--who knew movies I never heard of could be of such value. Interesting reading assignments, at first they don't all seem to connect, then about week 3, everything clicked, I leaned a lot about a lot of different things!
I'm sorry this class is over. It was one of the best things I've ever had at Rutgers or anywhere. McElhinney thinks different, and he teaches students how to think differently. McElhinney has a really wide scope of knowledge. He makes me want to go to grad school.
I transferred into this class from another class and I can proudly say that it was one of the better decisions I've made so far in college. Great professor. Takes his time to leave some good comments on your paper so that you can actually do better. He also answers emails promptly regarding any questions you may have. I recommend!
Difficult class. You must good writer to get a good grade in this course. A lot of assignments but that's not the professors fault - it's the English Departments. Don't expect an easy A by any means. Writing assignments due almost every week & he gives you a lot of feedback. Grade definitely reflects your abilities as a writer.
Learned a lot, he was helpful when the mid-term wasn't good. Was able to do okay.
Super class. Really interesting Prof. I would take another class with McElhinney.
Learned a lot. Prof took his time to meet with me and go over my issues in the class. Well worth taking.
this class went so many places and Dr. Andrew wasa good tour guide... he is caring, and pasisonate, funny and obviously very smart, he does a good job of keeping the class all together while letting the conversation ebb and flow... McElhinney's great at the short lecture too
Clear and comprehensive class. Funny and insightful. Great discussions. Interesting reading.
I had Professor McElhinney for American Studies, American Horror and Detectives and Film. He was a fair grader and encouraged group discussion from everyone. The writing was easy and the films were easy to follow along. He especially enjoys creative writing. I would definitely take his class again.
The class was just message board discussions and watching the movies he assigns. He is an easy grader and was super vague about grading guidelines and due dates.
He doesn't actually read/watch your work, just gives 100s for most things, but then on random assignments, he'll grade super harshly. His lectures are also two years old, so he doesn't really do anything. Doesn't communicate well with students and is very sarcastic when he does.
I have taken two McElhinney online classes and they both have been interesting... he expects students to do the work... however he is very open and approachable, and he seems to cares... into history, and movies, and theater
I love Professor McElhinney. He loves to be called Dr. Andrew. He does discussion posts, creative writing, resumes, and semester-long online research video presentations. He's from Philadelphia, so he has a Phillies similar to the New Jersey accent, so you'll understand him pretty well. He's a movie actor, so you'll get to watch movies in his class
I took American Horror and it was completely online but I found the class to be really interesting. He had some great movie recommendations and I enjoyed watching them every week. I wish the grading criteria was a little more clear and that there was more feedback but it was a fun class nonetheless.
