Arash is a great guy and likes what he does. he is not the easiest person to understand, and the subject matter can be dense, but he really wants his students to do well. i recommend this class!
Arash is VERY smart(PhD&MD). However, he is too smart to relate to his students. Class started w/ attendence of 50-60. By the end he waslucky if 15 pple came. But t/o he was optimistic and tried his best 2 teach those who came. His TF was the best and single handedly helped us pass. He tried and always asked what he could do to make it better.
do bother going to lecture. go to discussion, TA awesome. gives handout of test topics, just study it and prepare answers. will do fine. really nice guy, wants you to do well and learn. doesn't understand he is very confusing at times. go easy on him, and just learn from the TA
He is a nice guy but can be a little confusing and hard to understand. TA helps balance him, clarifying any confusion. Its an intro to MATLAB, so he teaches by using the program and projects it on the screen for us to follow. Allows for group instead of individual projects. Test are simple with open notes and MATLAB. Great for intro to MATLAB.
He is such an excellent and cheerful human being. Really cares about his students their understanding of the material and the bigger ideas behind the basic statistics being taught. Will address all questions and concerns to the best of his ability. It's really up to the student to listen and put work into the class.
Arash is an awesome professor! If you pay attention to his lecture you'll find the content very interesting and easy to comprehend. He tries very hard to make our lives so much easier. 10/10!
Very easy to get an A but I learned absolutely nothing
He is the best prof I've had at BU. He's great at explaining things and I would take anything that he taught.
Arash is a super sociable teacher and really cares about his students learning the material. You can definitely learn a lot from him if you push yourself too!
He is one of the most patient teachers I have had. He goes through his slides very thoroughly in lecture, making concepts very easy to understand if you're paying attention. He always tries to get the class involved, making sure the information is coming across correctly. He promotes teamwork and rewards hard work.
Arash has got to be one of the best professors I've had at BU! He really cares for his students and always is super passionate about all the MATLAB/Statistics material during lecture. Totally an awesome guy and a really clear, passionate professor. And NE212 was an easy class, the tests are open note and the labs weren't hard at all.
Hes very caring and wants the best for you. If you have a question he tries his best to answer and also suggest additional reading that can help your question.
Arash was an amazing professor and even better person. He was one of the only professors I've ever had who genuinely cares about his students, how they feel about the material, if they've learned and whether or not they participate. MATLAB intimidated me at first but Arash really explained all concepts slowly and thoroughly. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Absolutely take any course you can with Arash! He's super helpful, cares about his students and wants you to succeed. You will learn an incredible amount from him.
Great course! Great professor! Highly recommended!!! CN510 was more of a discussion than a lecture series which was very helpful in understanding the core concepts. He is always available outside class hours and provided valuable insight on final projects and further research. Amazing professor who actually cares if students grasps the content!
Arash is the most down-to-earth professor that I have ever had. He is extremely considerate of the lives of his students and goes out of his way to get to know each and every one of them personally. His enthusiasm is one of the best parts of the class, and he is supportive in every way possiblenot to mention that he ensures the success of all.
Arash is an incredible human being and professor. Going into the course, I was nervous about being ill-prepared for my first computer science course but Arash's teaching style is incredibly conducive for students. Arash is always available to meet one on one and always maintains a positive attitude. I loved the course so much I became an assistant!
Arash is one of the most dedicated professors at BU! He is concerned with student success and continually checks in to see how I am understanding the material. I have never had a professor as nice as Arash and I highly doubt I will again (he's one of a kind!). This class was not very difficult because of how much he helps his students.
Arash is an amazing professor. His knowledge of computational neuroscience is deep and, most importantly, he is able to communicate this knowledge clearly to his students. I learned all the basics of neural modeling from his class. I enjoyed regularly chatting with him about projects and computational research articles. He is extremely helpful.
Arash is one of those professors who truly cares for the well-being of his students. He wants everyone to excel in his class and attain a grasp on statistics and MATLAB they can take to the real world. I enjoyed going to his class and talking to him outside of class as well.
Arash's lectures are very clear. He'll make sure that you understand the course materials by the end of the class. His powerpoint slides are very specific (and wordy but this allows you to understand the lecture fully) and the codes could be copied into MATLAB for hands on practice. This class is a good one for intro MATLAB.
Arash is easily my favorite professor I've had. He is entertaining in his lectures and is an extremely nice and approachable professor. The subject matter of the class is definitely difficult but Arash draws your attention and teaches it well. He is also always ready to repeat himself upon request.
Arash is a kind soul and a fantastic professor! Really enjoyed this class during my first semester of graduate school. It was challenging material, but Arash explained everything in a clear way and took the time to make sure everyone understood. he is always available for a meeting outside of class to clear things up, and even just to discuss life.
Prof Y is personable & definitely invested in his students. Material is presented in a straight forward way, and lectures prepare you well for exams. He gave the resources to understand the material; I wasn't lost if anything didn't make sense right away. He especially made great use of lecture slides. If I was confused the slides cleared things up
I took NE212 with Arash this past semester. Arash and the TF were extremely helpful both inside and outside class - made sure everyone comprehended the lesson topics and provided good examples. Lectures and discussion were extremely helpful. Arash was always accessible and eager to help students. Learned a lot and would take the class again.
Arash is one of the kindest professors I've had at BU. He is honest, caring, respectful, quirky, and teaches with great detail and thoughtfulness. The class sometimes seems slow, but it's really to ensure that everyone truly understands what's going on. As long as you involve yourself and not doze (or skip), assignments/exams are quite doable.
Arash is a very thoughtful and intelligent teacher. Every neuro major will most likely have to take NE212 but regardless of your interest or experience, Arash will help you through it.
a smart teacher who wants his students to be engaged in the coursework, he is very supporting. Pay attention in class, you SHOULD get an A or at the worst B. It literally depends on the amount of work you put in, honestly just pay attn in class, and you'll be fine. like you dont even need to study outside pf class that much, maybe like 30 min.
Arash is a fantastic professor who truly cares about your success in the class. If you pay attention in lectures you will do well. Arash is a great person to talk to and keeps the class exciting.
Arash is a great professor and really knows his stuff when it comes to MATLAB and statistics. He does a great job breaking everything down in his lectures and in the class exercises help solidify concepts. Additionally he rewards students who want to learn, making it rewarding to reach out with questions!
This is definitely the class to take if you are interested in computational neuroscience. Assignments aren't difficult, rather they are intended to help you understand the actual concepts behind what you are learning. Arash does a great job at explaining the harder concepts and is patient with students having a tough time. 10/10!
The upper level graduate computational neuroscience classes require effort and a good bit of time on your part to do assignments well, but the professor isn't trying to sink your grade. If you try and put forth the effort, you'll get a good grade and learn some amazing things about computational neuroscience.
Arash really cares about his students and his material. However, his teaching style is very weird and wacky. He is SUPER repetitive and has a tendency to call on students at random. Also definitely never leave class early without talking to him first- he WILL call you out! Kind of a mixed bag but an easy class.
An amazing professor and human being. Has the rare ability to both inspire his students and make them feel at ease with getting the answer completely wrong. I never felt negatively judged only determined to impress. Always actively recruiting students to continue to learn at his lab. A master at creating the perfect environment to learn and grow.
The projects are not hard and really helpful. He is willing to help anytime !!
Arash is an amazing professor! He really cares for his students and their performance. He's super knowledgeable and makes the concepts in class very easy to understand. He calls on people in class to answer questions so pay attention. If you're having trouble, he will surely spend the time and effort to help you if you reach out. Great lecturer!
Arash is one of the most unique, kind, geniune humans I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. It is obvious that he wants students to succeed, and, more importantly, to understand the material. NE212 inspired my interest in coding and motivated me to explore computational neuroscience. Take a course with Arash if you want to feel engaged and learn
Arash is a fantastic teacher who really wants you to learn and succeed. He is incredibly patient and does a great job breaking down concepts (or math) that is more complicated. I highly recommend this class!
I took this class despite not being a vision researcher, and Arash did a great job making everything accessible and easy to translate to my field of research. Great class if you're interested in computational neuroscience, no matter the translation.
Arash is one of the most influential professors/mentors I met in college. He is very patient when explaining detailed concepts and is happy to answer any levels of questions. In his NE212 class, I felt really comfortable voicing all of confusion without worrying him judging me in anyway. It was clear that Arash knows the concepts well.
Arash is an angel. He gave extra credit opportunities to students after each midterm, so you didn't feel like your grade is contingent on one exam. I am horrible at Matlab. Borderline unteachable. But he was always so kind to me. He tries to make sure you understand. I highly recommend participation. He's sweet, and really cares.
Arash is a great professor who truly cares about his students. He is always willing to explain concepts and meet with students so they best understand the course material. MATLAB did not come easy to me but he is very dedicated and caring when it comes to helping his students. Highly recommend!
Arash is the most influential, charismatic, and caring professor I have met in my four years at Boston University. Matlab was incredibly difficult for me to learn but he truly went above and beyond to make complex concepts simple enough for me to grasp. I highly recommend taking any course he is leading and asking questions because he will help you
I was nervous in taking a computational neuroscience class, but this course was really fun and made me motivated to pursue computer science even further. Dr. Yazdanbakhsh really makes the material easy to understand and he is very approachable for any questions. He quickly knows all the students personally. Grades are high in this course as well.
Arash is truly one of the nicest, most caring professors I've had at BU! NE204 was a really enjoyable experience because of him and his ability to explain hard to understand concepts. He really cares about each of his students and is willing to go the extra mile to help explain things to his students! Would 100% recommend him to anyone
Taking CN530 with Professor Arash is truly the most rewarding experience. As a graduate level course, Arash gave interesting lectures, foster inspiring conversations on findings/breakthroughs in the visions neuroscience field, and towards the end of the semester, he guided everyone through a personal project on topic that one is most passionate in!
Professor Arash has a very systematic and organized way of teaching this course and making sure all students are up to speed. Arash is always more than happy to answer questions from students and he explains important concepts multiple times (which saved me when I zoned out for a bit ). Learned a lot about computational models and Matlab skills!
Arash is an amazing professor who gives fun and inspirational lectures. His slides are clear and relevant to the assignments. He is willing to help students with their projects and assignments that he replies emails quickly. If you are interested in computational neuroscience, take his class and you will learn a lot.
If you have any previous computational experience, this class will be a breeze, but even if you don't Arash really holds your hand in this class. Assessments and grading policies set you up to succeed. He calls on people in lecture so show up and stay focused, but he isn't trying to shame anyone.
Loved him! He has a nice and calming presence and allowed for a welcoming atmosphere. I enjoyed learning about neuroscience through a different lens and Arash made it incredibly enjoyable. He is also incredibly helpful! He stays after dismissing class and makes sure to answer every student who asks a question after class.
Arash is truly one of the best professors that I have had thus far at BU! He is truly compassionate about educating his students and is more than willing to help students understand concepts. No pre-requisite knowledge of computational neuro or MatLab is needed to be successful in his class, Arash does a great job explaining all concepts and coding
Arash is one of the best professors I've had at BU. In both NE 212 and NE 204, Arash takes the time to make sure every student understands the material. He works with every student to make sure everyone learns and succeeds in the class. He is a great lecturer, extremely caring, and prioritizes his students' education and happiness. Awesome guy!
Arash is one of the best professors at BU! He is a down-to-Earth kind of guy who is respectful and loved by most, if not all of his students! He has the ability to make a relatively large class feel small and personalized to you by how much he cares. As long as you are engaged and focused during the lectures this class will be a breeze for anyone!
Arash is a fantastic professor who truly cares about his students. He really loves when you talk to him outside of class either for help with classwork or just about computational neuroscience. He wants you to succeed and the work definitely sets you up to succeed. If you do the homework and pay attention in lecture, the exams will be a breeze.
Arash is very clearly passionate both about teaching computational neuroscience and inspiring students to actively engage in class as well as problem-solve on their own. While certain topics are more challenging, he focuses on making sure that you are not just memorizing definitions but actually understanding the material.
Arash is far and away one of the most inspiring and considerate lecturers at Boston University. He helped me hone my Matlab skills and introduced me to computational neuroscience with unparalleled enthusiasm.
Arash paces the class very well while understanding students have different levels of understanding of the subject. He gives great feedback and is very kind to all students. He will help you if you feel you need more help.
This class is a great introduction to computational and conceptual basis of neuromodeling. Arash is great at connecting equations with physiological and psychological concepts. He meets students one-on-one and encourages you to work on projects applying concepts to your own interests, and become more independent.
Arash is a really awesome person and teacher! When we transitioned online he was very thoughtful and accommodating. NE204 is super interesting and he is an engaging, fun teacher.
Arash leads the lectures in a seminar-like fashion and encourages participation in class discussions in order to enforce and solidify your understanding. His main goal is expanding your expertise and understanding of difficult vision topics, it is a demanding class but the knowledge you come out with is incredible.
Arash cares about students being able to explain the class topics both to themselves and to others. While all topics aren't extremely simple, Arash curates the lectures in order to go over and reinforce old topics, while learning new ones a few steps at a time.
This class provided me a solid ground to build my analysis and programming skills. I highly recommend this class to anyone who wishes to further their skill sets.
This class was the best neuroscience class that I took in BU. The content is in depth and not easy, but Arash is a great educator and put his best efforts to make this class worth taking.
CN510: Arash is a fantastic professor who delivers air-tight lectures. This course can be taken with no prior experience, and rewards putting in extra time and interest. He truly does care about everyone, he learns everyone's name and checks in all the time and really means it. The course could cover a little more material, but is overall great.
Arash is one of the best professors I have had at BU. He conducts his classes with much thought and care, making sure each student is actively learning and enjoying the days lecture. Arash takes the time after classes to meet independently to ensure his students success. NE212 was a great walkthrough introductory statistics and analysis in matlab.
Taking NE212 will help you learn a lot about statistics as well as how to use Matlab. Pay attention in class and participate often if you want to learn as much as can. If midway through you feel like parts of the class are too easy for you and you could do more, go talk to Arash in person. He is great at giving ideas for personal project
Professor Arash is one of the nicest professors in the Neuro department. Not only does he provides good feedback, he explains everything in a very clear and concise manner. He is very accessible and takes time and patience to explain topics to people who are confused with the topics. Highly recommend!
This course is a little challenging but Arash knows how to explain concepts in a very detailed and concise manner. There were 3 big projects and each time he gives detailed reviews and advise to help better your understanding and the topic itself. Highly recommended to people who are looking into computational neuro class.
Professor Yazdanbakhsh is easily one of the best professors I ever studied with. He is very enthusiastic about explaining concepts, and connecting them to what we already know. He often helped us approach a single concept from different directions, and I would often leave his class with new insights to mull over. He is also an amazing human being!
Arash is worried for his students to get the best grade possible. He wants us to learn more than anything. He is able outside class and gives extra credit if necessary. Very comprehensive prof
Prof Arash - You're one of the best teachers I have ever had. This was a tough year and this class was a major positive highlight. I've learnt a lot and I am very humbled for the opportunity to participate. Thank you very much.
Prof Arash is super kind, professional and he is very enthusiastic! He is good at explaining concepts even to people not familiar with those stuff or in other fields. And we always have extra credits in the assignment! So if you are interested in neural models, I would definitely recommend this course to you! Thank you very much Arash!
Youre going to be really lucky if you take NE212 with Arash. I had a really bad fear of all things math, comp sci and tests - and taking his class helped me get through those bit by bit. Hes really caring and outlines things well thru his lectures/PPTs. Youll come away feeling like you learned complex topics throughly. It was an enjoyable class!
Truly one of the best professors I have had at BU. He really cares about his student's understanding and their progress. I am currently in his CN 530 class and his teaching style immerses you in the content. I have learned so much content from just a few classes, his courses are truly rewarding! If you can, take a class with Arash!
Good class. Though lots of readings, worth taking it. Learned a lot from the class. Arash is a very nice Prof to work with. Very patient and explain the concept well.
Arash makes this course stress free: exams are open note/internet and reasonably weighted; answers to labs are covered at the end; email if youre missing lecture and hell let you retake attendance quizzes (1-3 mc). Im in his CompNeuro and Vision Lab and all he wants to do is to help us grow into into the people he believes we can become.
Arash is one of the most caring professors at BU. He does a lot to make sure all his students understand the material & he does not make anyone feel bad for not grasping certain concepts on the spot. Environment where students can learn w/o feeling intimidated. Class helps you gain a strong base in MATLAB, opening u up to lots of new opportunities!
This is a great class on computational models of neurons and neural circuits. The way Arash leads classroom discussions made them fun, very lively and educational. He has great examples to make theoretical topics accessible to everyone and the grading is never harsh. Arash really wants you to succeed in this class and have fun with it.
Arash was an amazing professor for NE212! We were always able to ask questions in lecture or reach out outside of class for help. His expectations were very clear and if you participated in the quizzes/labs you are able to get a good grade. If you are ever struggling Arash and the TAs will definitely help.
Prof Arash is wonderful and very inspiring teacher. Truly cares about his students and explains matlab wonderfully even to those who have no programming experience. Very kind and funny, encourages participation and gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. Great professor !
Prof Arash is an amazing professor. He will answer your question patiently outside of class. He cares about student's understanding. Will check in with students from time to time. A lot of interesting materials taught in class like convolution. He may even allow you to continue to do research with him.Thank you for the course Arash!
Arash was incredibly helpful when we ran into any confusion with the assignments in CN 530, and his willingness to work with us one-on-one really made everything click. I actually turned my final project into an honors thesis/manuscript with Arash as my advisor - I would definitely recommend this elective and everything that you can get out of it!
In 212, Arash was the absolute best professor. Topics are very clearly explained, will go over concepts if asked, one of my fav profs ever. He gives quizzes very often on blackboard (beginning of most classes) but they are 2-3 questions and easy. It's clear he really wants you to succeed, even hyped the whole class up so much before our first exam.
Before this, I had never taken a coding class. Arash made it not only fun but also extremely accessible! He's funny and wants everyone to succeed, he takes the time to learn everyone's name and comes around before classes to check in with you. The course is set up for you to do well. He is an absolute gem of a man and I can't recommend him enough!!
I am very fortunate that I was able to choose this lesson among the many professional elective class. Professor Arash patiently help every students and give use feedback. He always want to encourage student speak their ideas boldly and describe the word clearly. If you pay attention to the lecture, you will be fine.
Arash emphasizes that he cares more about us understanding the material than any assignment grade. Lectures often review material to keep everyone on track. Discussion in class is very encouraged. Feedback on assignments are always specific and you are allowed to fix your work based on the feedback. Available for questions after every class.
Arash is a great professor and he spends time getting to know everyone's names and makes sure to review each class. Lecture attendance is mandatory and there are weekly assignments that you get a lab period to work on. I have always finished these assignments during lab time but you have the whole week to do it. We use MatLab so NE212 is helpful.
Arash is one of the best professors I've ever had. He's passionate about teaching and the material, and it shows. Really can't recommend him enough.
Arash is one of the best professors I have ever had, and he has a way of subconsciously making you try harder and care about the work you're doing. For this class, the readings are a lot yet amazing to read. Out of all my years in undergrad, I had the most fun I have ever had in this one. Prior coding experience is recommended.
This class is an essential for anyone wanting to enter the field of computational neuroscience, and Arash explains really complex topics of modeling and mathematics in the best way possible. I would recommend taking this class along with CN530, for the full extent of computational neuroscience.
If you take NE204 with Arash, you are in luck. Learning is prioritized. There are weekly assignments and lecture quizzes (i.e. one review question). Midterm and final contents are very reasonable and open-note, open everything (like Google, ChatGPT, Matlab, Wiki). Come relaxed and enjoy learning computational neuroscience and Nobel Prize concepts.
Arash is an amazing professor! This course is very appealing and inspiring. This is a 500-level course, so it would not be easy, but Arash explains everything clearly with patience so everyone can catch up. I can get so much support from Arash and my classmates. The class is highly flexible and I feel respectful and supportive. Highly recommended!
Both NE212 and NE204 with Arash are gems in the neuro department. There are weekly assignments and lecture quizzes. Exams are open-note. NE204 focuses more on computational neuro concepts while NE212 focuses more on Matlab and statistics. Having NE212 gives a leg up but is not obligatory for success in NE204. Highly recommend both.
NE204 is a great basic introduction to computational neuroscience. If you have any experience in MATLAB or coding in general, this class will come quite easy to you, and if not, the first week is spent covering the basics of MATLAB. There are small, easy quizzes every lecture to make sure the previous lecture's material is reviewed and understood.
Very inclusive class and takes on computational neuro from the beginning. Since most of UPN is focused on neurobiology based ideas this course is a good bridge. Arash is big on feedback and alters the course to best suit the students each semester. Always looking to improve the course, and material is well paced throughout the whole semester.
Very discussion focused class and dives deep into the history behind well known concepts in the field today The lectures are very much dependent on the student input and each class ends up covering different aspects of neuroscience depending on the academic background and questions of the students. Feels very student driven and connects many topics
Arash is a fantastic professor and person. The structure of his classes encourage participation, and make the material much more engaging. He leads organized and clear lectures. Expectations for exams are very clear, and he makes coding a Matlab a manageable topic to understand, even if you have no background in it.
Arash is a really caring professor. He acknowledges how difficult the subject matter of his courses is but does everything in his power to simplify it as much as possible. The class was really interesting and discussion based. Arash encourages participation but is never upset or disappointed by a wrong answer or an "I don't know".
This course is confusing content wise but Arash does a good job simplifying it as much as possible. Grading is very fair. Arash takes a lot of time to prepare you for exam content and there are many opportunities to work towards an A.
Arash is really nice and the class is overall pretty easy if you pay attention in lecture. Lecture is designed for participation but fairly boring due to the nature of Matlab/stats. Very accessible outside of class and understanding of his student's needs.
Professor Yazdanbakhsh has a funny, engaging style that mixes student participation with dense lectures. He makes time in and out of class for you. This class serves as a good foundation in neural modeling. The final project stood out as being useful and self driven. Dive into the models you are most interested in to get the most out of this class.
Professor Yazdanbakhsh makes complex concepts accessible and interesting. He is a very inspiring professor: it's clear that he are not only knowledgeable in the field but genuinely passionate about teaching. His enthusiasm has had a huge impact on my own motivation and interest in neuroscience and computer programming.
Prof Yazdanbakhsh regularly works in student participation and checks in with the class during lectures. He's super responsive by email and cares about you learning the material! He teaches a fair course that sets you up for success, so put in the work learning the material like any other class while knowing you'll be consistently supported
Brilliant and fun professor who explains things amazingly! NE212 is great for all levels of coding and stats (most people in the class have never touched code or stats and averages for the exams were 90+, and there's extra cred), and introduced to a lot of necessities needed for any STEM major. Great even if you have prior knowledge, talk to Arash
In CN510, I could learn different types of computational modeling pertaining to membrane potential and short-term memory using Hodgkin-Huxley model, neural network model, leaky additive and shunting models. The lecturer and 5 different assignments strongly motivated me to study several important neural mechanisms based on what I learned in class.
I love love loved Arash's class. MATLAB coding is an important skill to have moving forward in a STEM-oriented field, and Arash does a great job teaching it. He's very kind and funny and gives extra credit on all the exams for that little extra bump. I would recommend listening in class, interacting, and raising your hand.
NE212 and CN530. Genuinely the best professor at BU. He makes an effort to ensure everyone is understanding and excited about the content. Arash is understanding and kind. You'll be able to get the grade you want / need in the class based on guidelines, but you still learn everything because he's so engaging. Take every class you can with him.
Open ChatGPT, internet, everything exams. You do need to know about MATLAB though. Hard kind of class if you haven't coded before but being in group work during the discussion ('lab') section will definitely help. Exams are like 30% of your FINAL grade total.
Homeworks are easy, concepts are easy, tests are easy. Pop quizzes serve as the attendance portion. Even if you were sick and need to stay home, you can't make up the quizzes and your grade will suffer. Overall, decent. Dr. Yazdanbakhsh is infinitely better than the previous professor who taught the course (at least he seems to be a nice person).
Arash really cares about his students and always encourages questions. He is an amazing lecturer.
I think the biggest thing with Professor Yazdanbakhsh is that he wants all his students to do well, but doesn't want to give you all the answers, he wants to lead you there. Engage in class, answer and ask questions, it doesn't matter if you're wrong, that's where learning happens! If you do this, his classes are super informative and helpful.
I have had Arash as a professor for two semesters now and I would definitely take him again! He is a great professor for such a difficult subject and actively engages the class. He takes notice and gives extra support if you participate. Exams are open note but still hard. If go to and pay attention, and participate in class, you will get an A.
Arash is very caring and supportive. He makes the content clear and straightforward and always makes sure that students truly understand. If you go to lectures and discussions, take notes and answer questions, you'll sure get an A. Also it's good to go through the contents after each lecture because the concepts do build up.
I appreciate how Arash cares about students learning & succeeding. Lab can be difficult, but lecture/OHs make it doable. Lecture quizzes help you review material during the semester. A major reason for my success was participating in class; it helped me a lot to practice explaining topics and allowed me to hear different explanations from others.
Arash is a great professor. He is the reason I am pursuing computational neuroscience further post-grad. He really cares about his students and caters his lectures to them. I highly recommend taking a class with him if you are interested in comp-neuro!
This is my second semester having Arash and he is just an awesome lecturer. Participating in class is worthwhile and he welcomes any student interaction during lectures. The content can be daunting, but Arash walks you through it stepwise so you can go from big picture to small details. Comp neuro can be a pain but Arash made it super fun!
Arash made this class easy - he makes sure the class understands what's going on. lots of MATLAB in labs. Exams are open note and fair. His energy more than makes up for the difficulty of the content. 20 in-lecture quizzes throughout the semester, but if you're sick or have a genuine reason to have missed class you can email him and make it up.
Lectures matter because they're very thorough, Dr. Yazdanbakhsh cares about you knowing the material like the back of your hand. So get to class on time, take notes, and ask all your questions--he encourages you to get the most out of his class! He's also super responsive in emails so you can count on his accessibility outside of class!
The contents of the class help build firm foundation of basic computation models in neuro; Lecture clearly structured, interactional, and fun, always enjoy while engaged; Professor himself is super approachable and nice, flexible after lecture hours and always willing to help. Overall, AMAZING lecturer and professor, definitely take his courses!!
Arash is a wonderful and detailed professor, and he is so helpful and accommodating. He was so kind about some of my absences which weren't even emergencies. And while sometimes it may be difficult to understand his explanations, he won't hesitate to literally sit on the floor of a CAS hallway to explain as much as you need. Highly recommend!!
This is the first time I have felt that my learning and mastery was prioritized over work for a grade. Arash does a wonderful job introducing students unfamiliar with tools like Matlab at an easy to follow, reasonable pace. He does this while still working to keep experienced students engaged with deep discussions. He is also very entertaining.
CN530 is an intensive experience that will teach you more than you could ever imagine in a short time. The class is all about community - you MUST (!!) ask for help in order to be successful. Arash is the most approachable professor I know at BU and really cares about your learning. You'll get so much out of CN530 if you put in the effort.
Class is conceptually intense but fascinating. I went in with NE 101 knowledge and was fine. The class is 95% discussion/community based (lots of relevant tangents because this is *his* field), lots of focus on theory of vision. If you put in effort, you will get so much out of it (you need to go in with the mindset of being willing to try/learn)
Dr. Yazdanbakhsh and his team were able to help me understand computational neuroscience more broadly. He always wanted to make sure we understood the concepts and different equations. His class sparked my interest in taking more advanced computational neuroscience electives in the future. Highly recommend to take his class!
Absolutely love Arash. Took him for NE212 and just took NE204 with him this past sem. The lab quizzes are easy, pay attention in the lecture, and they always stress how difficult the exams are, but honestly, it's not bad. Just take notes and ask questions at the end of the day.
Took him for CN530 and NE212. Arash is the best professor at BU hands down. If you're engaged with the material and participate in class, you'll get so much out of it! You'll learn stuff you can't find in textbooks. He's really understanding if you are genuine and try your best, just make sure you communicate and he's on your side. Take his class!
Arash's class is engaging and interactive. He breaks down the complex content well and is always willing to help. The exams may seem daunting, but with attentive note-taking and utilizing resources like unstuck ai, you can excel in this course.
Arash wants all of his students to succeed and is really nice. He makes an effort to learn all of his students' names and has everyone participate in lecture. Lots of opportunities for extra credit and all exams are open note/open chatgpt.
He is really a great teacher and a good guy. Like many others, I believe that computational neuroscience should not be required at BU; fortunately, he knows that most people don't like these courses and tries to make the class as enjoyable as possible. As long as BU pushes its computational neuroscience requirements, take the classes with him.
I highly recommend this professor. He is very thorough in explaining subject material. He really tries to make sure students have a good understanding of class topics.
Arash is great at explaining class material. He teaches at a good pace that makes it easy to follow along. Lectures are interactive and participation is encouraged. Asking questions and being active will help you get the most out of lectures.
Arash is such a good professor l, he genuinely cares about his students and it is easy to succeed in his class if you put the effort in.
Arash really helped guide students along the way. I had no prior knowledge of programming, and he made me grasp the concepts and basic skills needed for MatLab. I advise to participate in the discussions and advise to stay active as a participate in his class, if you can, as it really is where I gained most of the material for the whole course.
Dr. Yazdanbakhsh is truly an amazing Professor who cares about his students and wants them to succeed! Lecture attendance is important to understand the course material. During lecture, Dr. Arash, makes sure to stop and ask the class if any topics/concepts need to be clarified and encourages questions. I 100% recommend taking NE212 with Dr. Arash!
Dr. Arash is a very supportive professor. Ask questions to understand concepts because he logically explains things. I recommend taking notes on the slides during and after lectures because some classes don't cover all the topics on the slides. Even without previous experience in coding I learned a lot and enjoyed the class.
Professor Arash was such a kind professor, he really cares more about you understanding and learning the concepts he's teaching than the grade you receive. He makes an effort to learn student's names and engages with the class, he's also accessible to ask for help. The tests/quizzes were open-note/chat and discussion sections were collaborative.
So incredibly intelligent and knows so much about the field of visual neuroscience. He deeply cares about his students understanding and prioritizes asking questions and making sure everyone is clear about the information. He is also very understanding about personal issues or academic troubles, so he is approachable if anything is going wrong.
Arash has been a patient and very active professor. He helped me learn about computational neuroscience, neural models, and statistics although I had no prior experience. If you attend lectures+labs and take detailed notes, you will absolutely excel in this class. His open note exams allowed me to implement, not just memorize, what I learned.
I am not a tech savvy person, but that was not an issue at all for NE 204 or 212. Arash unintentionally funny, extremely kind, and actually takes the time to learn everyone's name (even in a big lecture). You learn all sorts of different types of ways to model various neuroscience systems and apply them to MATLAB. I highly recommend to anyone!
Dr. Arash is simply the most caring professor I've ever had. His lectures can be confusing sometimes but he always wants to make sure that everyone fully understands everything so he will answer any questions you might have! Tests are also open internet (including ChatGPT which is clutch). Overall definitely recommend this class!
Dr. Arash is the nicest professor I have ever had. He goes above and beyond to accommodate his student, no matter the circumstances. The course itself teaches you a lot about the computational aspects of neur
Dr. Arash is the most empathetic and passionate professor I've had at BU. I took ne212 and 204 with him and he never fails to accommodate his students. His lectures are wildly interesting and if you actively engage in the class, you are bound to learn a lot through his lectures as well as his guest lectures; a fresh perspective on neuroscience!
Arash told me not to glaze him and rather tell future students how to do well. Go to each lecture, keep up with material, and repeat. Exams are dummy easy.
Dr. Arash is one of the only professors I've had that takes the time to make sure everyone understands a concept before moving on, even in a large class. He's understanding and friendly! Please engage with him and classmates during lecture--it's so chill, low-stakes, and incredibly rewarding. If you show up to class and participate, you're golden.
Arash is an incredibly intelligent, understanding, and caring professor. His engagement with students is exceptional. He will dedicate himself to learn each students name, and will cold-call so pay attention! Arash truly cares about teaching neuroscience, and will take time to walk through concepts in-depth at the pace of the class.
Arash is hands down one of my favorite professors ever. He is extremely knowledgeable and makes lectures so engaging and just wants everyone to learn and share their perspectives/ask questions. He makes very complex topics super accessible and is really good about tailoring the content to the class. I highly recommend taking any courses with him!
This was one of the most worth-it classes I have taken at BU! Professionally, this class develops your research mindset, your literature comprehension, and you confidence in the content. The main thing is- if you have any doubts AT ALL, ASK FOR HELP!!! Arash genuinely wants you to learn, and will take as much time as needed to clear any confusion.
Professor Arash is one of my favorite professors! He genuinely cares about whether students are learning and makes an effort to remember as many names as possible, even in a large lecture class. He's always open to answering questions, and as long as you pay attention and participate, you'll do just fine!
Arash is hands-down one of the best profs at BU, if you can take his class please do! He makes every lecture so engaging and genuinely takes the time to get to know all of his students. 212 is easy to get an A in but you come out thoroughly understanding basic stats. not very coding heavy at all.
Truly one of the best Professors at Boston University. He always goes above and beyond for his students. If you have any worries and concepts you do not understand, he will go out of his way to help you. LITERALLY JUST ASK QUESTIONS. YOU WILL DO SO GOOD!! HE IS ONE OF THE MOST DOWN TO EARTH AND ENGAGING PROFS EVER.
The content does get confusing at times but he is so good at explaining them and goes above and beyond for his students. He has students answer in class which is so helpful! He is super engaging and I felt so comfortable going to him with my concerns. He is very understanding and easy to talk to. One of the best classes and profs I have taken!!
Arash is one of my fav profs! He goes above and beyond to make us understand everything and checks in constantly (+ when you run into him on the street) that everything is "crystal clear!" I love this man and his class (praying to get him for NE 204)
Best professor I ever have
Arash is truly one of the best professors at BU. He really cares more about true learning that anything else. His pacing of content makes sure everyone is totally on track and on the same page. A professor who is really passionate about his job and cares for students. He makes sure everything is "crystal clear"
One of the best profs I have had at BU. Very engaging and makes you fall in love with the subject being taught. Classes are super participation-heavy heavy so make sure to ask questions.
awesome guy, participate in class and you will get so much out of it. he really makes sure every student understands the content presented before moving on.
