80%self taught, VERY rude to students, abrasive and mean. civil but mean
Has a thick, difficult to understand accent. Decent sense of humor.
He doesnt teach a d**m thing
He has no sense of humor and his classes are very long and boring.
He didn't teach and didn't cover everything we needed for 208.
Exams hardly refelct what is "learned" in class. He whispers too much.
Self-taught class, talks very softly, doesn't explain concepts well at all!
Half of class mysteriously vanished after first exam...
NO difficult understanding.Maybe he got better.Exams are verbatim from book. EZ!
what?! class is hard but he's a great teacher, explains well and understanding.
He reviews the chapters but doesn't teach whatsoever-Hard tests-boring lecture
he's not as bad as he sounds. its a hard class. read the book!
Is a treat to take! The course itself is challenging though JUST READ THE BOOK.
Nice Guy, Best 207 teacher
He never taught anything...ever, and made me feel dumb when I asked questions in
Will help you if you put forth the effort!- Great guy- Hard Class in General
not helpful at all, i swear he wants to see students fail
I agree he wants to see students fail, makes fun of people when asked questions
Arrogant and can't teach to save his life, teach yourself
The worst teacher i ever had!! This is a self taught class, he is ****y as hell
He's a mean **** avoid him!!!!
as far as 207 teachers, hes the best, lots of opps to boost grade, tests hard
Speaks softly w/AWFUL accent,HARD tests,read book & keep up,quizzes can help
wonderful teacher. inspired me to become an accountant
The best accounting teacher out of all the rest
No Comments
Good teacher. He doesnt expect everyone to be accountants, he just wants you to
bad teacher, couldn't understand a thing he said. got a "B" for cheating though
Horrible Accent and be prepared to teach yourself the course.
The only thing i learned is that cheating pays off, worst teacher ever
EXCELLENT prof makes acct fun which is tough
207 isn't easy but he gives 110% to help you with everything, the BEST teacher
Good if you do the work. Use the STUDY GUIDE! IT REALLY REALLY HELPS!
Great teacher, although class is poorly designed.
wonderful prof, reeeeally cares about students. don't fall behind though!
good professor, he knows his stuff
Best teacher that I have had in the business school, very helpful w/ everything
Geed teacher, but teaches differently that rest of department.
Horrible teacher, terrible accent...couldn't care less about his students
The only thing i didn't like about him is he doesn't let you wear hats in class. If you don't want him to bother you don't ask question or make eye contact and do work. He called on me a couple times acted like i didn't hear him and he left me alone.
take someone else, you can't wear a hat and he can't speak english. his teaching is not in line with the rest of the department and having him 1st puts you at a disadvantage in 208 and beyond. faculty even said if you had debassay for 207 you'll struggle
this man is the devil
I thought he was a decent teacher but he failed me by one point even after i went to him for help.Who does that? Pucker up, b/c you will need to do alot of a** kissing to pass. Satan walks the earth my friends and teaches acct 207 with an african acc

Umm.. don't take.. it's that simple
Personally,I have nothing against the guy. I did have him in 207 and he was fine then. But here, the guy is HARD! I mean HARD!! Spends too little time on too much material he wants us to know!! Memorizing book sentence by sentence is only way for an A. Those who get a general idea of it will get C.
Class is difficult. Alot of work. HW due every class period, quiz every week. Test are hard. Grading is liberal. Take only if dedicated to working.
A lot of work, hard class, a lot of homework due every class, quizzes once a week, tests aren't that bad if you understand the homework problems, he prepares you well for the CPA exam
did nothing except read the power point slides made from the text book publisher. his quizes are were near impossible very very complicated made them so students would fail. made fun of people too
When he comes to class with his **** hat he may kill it. But overall he's a great man and if you keep up with the work and do all the practice problems you will be fine. Take him over any professor.
Very bad prof. Can't understand a word he says and must teach the entire course to yourself. Class time is worthless but you have to be there for the weekly quiz and to hand in homework every class. Other prof. Highly recommmended
By far the worst professor I've had at UD. He's not willing to help you if you are having trouble and will just tell you to change your major. You have to teach EVERYTHING to yourself. He's a rude man with awful people skills. He has no regard for his students and will call you stupid in front of the class but expects you to participate.
thinks hes the god of accounting and if u aren't getting A's on everything ur stupid and u should change ur major. what teacher really says that? the week of our final he didn't hold review sessions or office hours bc his inlaws were in from africa. 5 hours before the final he emails us and tells us we had no place to take the test..complete moron
DO NOT TAKE ACCOUNTING WITH THIS MAN. He does not care about his students. He has a very hard accent to understand and I don't know why he is a teacher. Bottom line take this class with anyone except Debessay...
One of the best professors I've had. The class is extremely demanding, but that's the way intermediate accounting is. The constant homework and quizzes force you to keep up. If you work hard and participate in class you'll do well. Attendance is not optional here.
And it's official.....WORST PERSON FOR THE JOB!! Worst accent, you need a linguistics degree to understand him. He brags about how much money he makes and he drives a BMW. Okay, so if he's so rich, why doesn't he invest in some new clothes and getting those teeth fixed? Super unhelpful! Avoid at all costs.
This class is really hard but Debessay makes you understand it. As long as you do the homework and stay on top of things...DO NOT MISS CLASS, you will do fine. He wants you to succeed but expects you to put in the work. I would def recommend him for acct 207.
Very good teacher, but not for people that don't like to work or being forced to learn. Quizes and homework make tests a breeze. The class average even gets curved and your final get to count for one of your 2 regular tests if you did better on the final. He really makes you learn the subject, and if you go to class its hard to get below a B.
He is very hard to understand because of his accent. To make it worse, he whispers the entire class and only speaks up for about two minutes when someone asks him to. Only take his class if you are good at accounting otherwise you will find is VERY VERY hard to get help from him. He doesn't like to help students outside of class. Horrible.
Seems odd at first, bc always giving out High Fives. Great guy, knows his stuff. problem is he might not be able to articulate it. Online quizzes and hw, made life interesting bc system very bad (not webct) bc first year book company doing it (it is not him). likes students asking questions. just keep up.
if your taking this class you must keep up with the work in order to do well. getting an A is pretty much impossible, i worked REALLY hard for a B+. it's important to keep up with the homeworks and don't grade yourself hard on them bc it def. affects your grade in the end. i would advise you to take someone else for 207.
Nice professor with a very dry sense of humor, and loves to interact with the class high fives in particular. He stayed after class for an hour to teach people who didnt understand the material. That being said the course is not easy, so plan on working and learning. Take during winter and summer sessions he teache s the best then.
Let me break this down for you.Two teachers teach this class, debassay and paretta. I took both.Take debassay. Paretta is an evil man. For Deb, do all MC exercises and brief exercises on wiley.(paretta doesnt offer)Be prepared to spend about 10 hours of hw on each chapter. Do this and you will def pass.If not, unless your a genius, expect a 60.
By far the worst professor I've encountered at UD. Avoid him at all costs.
By FAR the worst professor I have ever had. He is hard to understand. Questions are left unanswered He is very rude and unorganized. Wouldnt tell us the average for the first test because it was so low. Last test he told us we couldn't ask questions. The book is your teacher b/c he doesnt teach at all.
Acct 316 is a very difficult class, most likely the toughest accounting class you'll take. Professor Debassay is a good teacher but even the best teacher couldn't make this class easy. Study hard and pass, that is the goal
This is a continuation of the prior comment. He assigns homework (that is technically optional, but he REALLY wants you to do it) and you submit the answers online. However, he always changes the due date and if you have already done the work it all gets erased! so you have to do it all over. Tests are long and you cant ask questions
he thinks he is a good teacher but he isn't. He will spend as much time with you as you need but the problem is you could spend hours in his office and never learn anything cause he can only explain things in one way and if you don't understand that way you are out of luck. READ THE BOOK AND DO ALL THE HW...ONLY WAY YOU WILL BE PREPARED FOR EXAMS
i understand the class is tough but he is quite possibly the worst teacher to be teaching it...."ya kno!?!" i didn't learn anything in class. so basically its not prof debessay that is teaching the class, its WileyPlus. that is all!
Terrible professor. Cant understand a word he says because he mumbles everything and talks with his hands in front of his mouth. Asks if people have any questions and then is a jerk if someone actually asks one. Puts Wileyplus on the screen all class every class but cant read it cause its size 8 font. So class is basically pointless.
There is a lack of clarity on the material he was teaching. He clearly new his stuff, but I found it difficult to understand the points he was making.
I just took Debessay for Acct 800 in a summer session. For how difficult the material is and how much MBA students dread the class, he made it completely reasonable. He gives all of the test banks and half the exam is open book. The man called me at 10pm to help me with a HW assignment. Acct is terrible, but noone will make it easy. READ THE TEXT!
avoid him at all cost!!! extremely rude, his first two exams is tooo... hard! His aim is to make his students drop!
Friendly, professional, and expects a lot of his students. Unarguably the hardest accounting class at UD. Debessay will help you through it. DO THE HOMEWORK. STUDY THE HOMEWORK.
words cannot describe the disappointment and sorrow that this man has instilled in his 316 students. Paying the tuition dollars to attend the University of Delaware, you'd expect the best from the core accounting class. Instead, we are given an inadequate professor. Good luck passing this class.
Everyone knows 316 is the hardest class in the business school, but it is even more intimidating knowing that you have to teach yourself all of the material. Debessay does nothing - he reads off of slides from the textbook company. Difficult to study for tests because there is so much material. Worst "teacher" I've ever had.
just keep on doing the test bank and you can get an A in the class.
don't go to class...complete waste of time. Did better on tests 2 and 3 after not going to class since the first exam. might as well learn material yourself out of the textbook. reading off of a powerpoint is NOT teaching, no matter how many times debessay says he "has to to have enough time". It's called being lazy.
suck it up and do the work and you will pass
Got an A in 315 and a B in 316 with Dr. Debessay. It is true you do have to learn a lot of the material on your own, but only so much can be taught in a class period. STUDY AHEAD OF TIME AND DO ALL OF THE HOMEWORK AND THE TEST BANKS!! If you do that you will be fine.
If not the best, Professor Debessay is definitely one of the top 2 or 3 teachers I've had the privilege to learn under. He is passionate about accounting and the future accountants he provides to the world. He is an outstanding person who will bend over backwards to ensure success in life beyond the classroom. Highly regarded in acctg circles
Professor Debessay is the only teacher I've had with open office hours until 9pm, 7 days a week. If you can not find him in his office, you can call him. When you call he will take time from what ever he is doing to help you. I read many negative comments that I dont agree with. He's quality. But the course is difficult regardless of teacher
Many find him tough but the truth is it's just a hard course. If your putting in the hours it takes you can do fine. Also, he makes himself more available to help students than any other professor I've ever had.
professor debessay cannot teach at all and is horrible when it comes to answering questions and being helpful in any way. dont go to class, study the textbook, and memorize the testbank, and you should be ok. if other teachers are available, take them.
Professor Debessay's class is really tough. There is no such thing as an easy A, not even a easy B. However, he is one of the best teachers I ever had. Because he is tough, you study harder, and in the end you will learn a lot more than you expected. Definitely pick his class. You will benefit in the long run.
This course is hard in nature, you cannot expect to go through the motions and receive the A you desire. Going to class does help when you pay attention and follow the lectures and listening to what he is saying. All of the resources are available on Sakai to receive an A in his class. Read, test bank questions, study guide questions...your fine.
This is the toughest class I've ever taken, but Debessay does everything he can to make it easier. He's extremely available and helpful. You need to start studying hard two weeks before a test to do well.
Debessay is hilarious...the class is very hard but he try's to make it feasible by giving his students the test banks. He would take test questions from the test bank and change them around and you would have some longer problems at the end. I worked a lot for this class studying about a week and a half for each exam and managed to earn a B
Dr. Debessay is tough. He expects you to know the material inside and out. However, he is very helpful if you seek him out after class and is always willing to help students if you make an effort.
Wonderful!
Don't blame the teacher, the class has a lot of material.Set aside a week to study before exams, read the chapter before the lecture to keep up,do all the homework after each chapter and again before the exam and do ALL the test bank questions.Go to the help sessions, pay attention in class. An'A'is hard but,I did it. Take this course seriously!
ACCT316 is a hard class. Inorder to succeed you must dedicate yourself to the material. Professor Debessay is there to help you in any way possible, but it is your job to study enough to do well, he wont baby you. Prof Debessay makes the material a lot more interesting than you would think it could be.
PLEASE disregard any positive comments since 30 May 2010. Prof. Debessay sent out emails to his "A" students asking for good evaluations: TOTALLY UNETHICAL - in reality, his students cannot understand him/his accent, he doesn't teach current issues, and he is known as one of the WORST profs. in the department per evaluations. Avoid at all costs.
I'm an A student and failed his class. No matter how much I studied, I could not do well on the exams. His teaching method was just reading off of the slides. He never showed us how to do a book problem on the board. I took the class again with a different professor and got an A. So it wasn't me, it was the professor.
If you're in the MBA, take him as a professor. While his class is not easy, you will learn a lot. The book is mandatory as it will help you out and make sure to keep up with the homework. While class attendance is not mandatory, he gives many hints about the tests. 2 Tests counted as grade nothing else.
Play to spend a huge amount of time with the textbook and multiple problem sets. Professor marches through pre-set lecture. Two tests are primarily computation. Professor is passionate for subject; But he has very little tolerance for the learning process; finds questions distracting. Many students found him arrogant. Worst class of my UD MBA.
It took me half of the semester to understand his accent. Seems arrogant to international students.
I enjoyed taking this class with Professor Debessay. It may not be easy for you if you do not have an accounting background. You will definitely need the book and need to do your home work.
Very helpful Professor , He really push his student to exellence
Very hard to understand, monotone and speaks into a mic. Not very helpful when you ask questions kind of makes you seem like an idiot. Tests are tough, only way to pass is to memorize tests banks of about 200 questions. Worst class ever. Take any other teacher if you have the option.
Very hard to understand at times. Between his accent and trouble understanding what you're saying it makes class annoying and frustrating at times. "Flipped classroom" meaning all work is done at home, but participation is still required. Make mistakes that often times go uncorrected. The class itself isn't hard, just annoying.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!! He is extremely rude, does not know how to lecture, and will not explain anything to you. You can not understand anything he says, he sits in the front of the class and mumbles for 2 straight hours. All the homework and quizzes are online and just take a lot of time to do.
Worst professor I have ever taken. Spends the 2 hour lecture sitting down and mumbling into his hand. Very rude and told my class everyone was going to fail every day. STAY AWAY FROM THIS MAN.
Do yourself a favor and do not take this class. Taken for BUAD minor credit and this guy cannot communicate anything with students. Answers phone in class, claims to care about students but is incredibly rude to the class. Calls out individuals, exams are extremely hard.
I am very surprised by all of the negative reviews on Professor Debessay. He cares dearly for his students and will do anything to see them succeed. He is incredibly passionate about teaching and that really shows. There is an accent barrier to get over, but it will be okay. For the exam, study from the practice exams and you will be golden.
He's a nice man and he does care, but he can be incredibly harsh. If you're sticky on a subject, he may call you out and it doesn't feel like constructive criticism. The worst part though was the questions on quizzes and exams were impossible. As soon as I thought I studied well, the exam threw me for a loop. He's not 100% bad, but not my favorite
Avoid this class at all costs, or at least with this professor. The accent barrier makes it difficult to focus on the material, because you're trying to understand what he is mumbling. If you ask questions he just repeats the explanation by yelling at you, as if that makes anything easier to understand. 0/10 would recommend.
Only take this class if you are asking to add a failing grade to your transcript. The most disrespectful and rude professor I have ever had. Not willing to help his students succeed whats so ever.
Debessay is the most personal professor I ever had. He takes time out of his summer to ask his students how he can best teach them. He's called my phone for help, emailed me checking in, and even invited me to his house for dinner. The class? All I'll say *wink* is DO THE TEST BANK *wink wink wink wink* and CHECK YOUR WORK on online quizzes *wink*.
Worst professor I have ever had. That is all I have to say. You are better off taking this class at community college than suffering through ACCT200 with Dr. Debessay.
Professor Debessay is a very nice man. His lectures are very boring but he takes attendance. The class material is so easy you can learn it on your own from the online homeworks and quizzes. Exam questions are straight from the test bank he gives you, study those and you should get an A.
I don't think that Debessay is the worst person ever. He truly cares about wanting students to learn, but sometimes it comes off wrong. He can be condescending, suffocating, and a little snarky and off-putting, but he's a really sweet man, just not the best professor. Do the homework, do the test banks, participate, and you'll be fine.
Demanding but caring. Lots of group work, homework and weekly quizzes, but he wanted us to succeed.
