Differential equations isn't easy, but Dr. Medrano explains it clear cut and well. He is very soft spoken, but very good at what he does.
Extremely satisfied with his teaching. Communicates a difficult subject coherently and efficiently. Will gladly break down any problem you need help with. His lectures and assignments are very consistent with what he expects you to learn. Will give you all the resources you need to succeed you just need to participate. Best math professor by far.
He's just taking notes on the board. He does not explain in detail. He barely speaks and doesn't give us a studyguide for test. I do not know why I am taking this class. He is not really helpful.
Does not explain the material at all. Comes to class and copies notes which are also posted on BB. Takes attendance everday. Does not break down problems into understandable material, solves them and asks if you have questions. Zero enthusiasm about the subject. Tests are insane, w/ not enough time. No EC, HW, or Qz. 5 tests each 20% of final grade
Horrible teacher , i think he should consider different career . not clear very shay , 4 tests no drops the lowest . does not put any effort in teaching . zero personalty with annoying smile
i have not seen a better math professor so far in my life, lectures are crystal clear, 4 tests before final and homework on webassign, super easy tests if you listen to his lectures and take good notes youll get straight A s in all tests. has good sense of humor and doesnt mind answering question at all. take dr medrano and you wont regret it!
Dr. Medrano is an extremely helpful professor who is passionate about discrete math. He is extremely helpful during his office hours and he genuinely wants students to succeed. However discrete math isn't easy his exams are tough but he does have clear expectations for them. Lectures are very fast but notes are online so you can go back and review.
Very dedicated professor! Goes out of his way to prepare his classes. Very thorough and makes us think. In other words He isn't an easy A professor. But when we leave the class we have learned a lot!! He makes himself available for students whenever we need it. Has a good sense of humor. Listens and cares about us as people.
I hate math. Only taking the class because it's required. I'm glad I got Dr Medrano as a professor. He's not a wimpy profm who just hands out grades like candy. Mmmakes you work for what you get. But that's the best way. Otherwise I'd not really learn anything! If I need help he's always available to help me. Wish there were more like him!!
Dr Medrano is awesome! I'm horrible at math, but he breaks concepts down and makes it easy to understand. His lectures are very clear and he answers any questions you have on the material. He's super helpful. There is online homework, 5 in class exams, and a final. Tests are very fair. Great prof, and super nice guy.
Professor Medrano is very helpful! Definitely recommend him, this class reminded me why I like math. He dedicates a class period before every exam to go over chapter review questions that the exam will cover. He takes the time to answer everyone's questions. Super nice guy!
Dr. Medrano is very good natured. Homework load is moderate, tests are very fair. Reasonable pace and plenty of opportunity to ask questions or review problematic areas before tests. Prof. doesnt believe in memorization so formulas are included on tests. Lectures demonstrate math steps to get from a to b but don't connect concepts very well.
Awesome professor! His tests are challenging but he gives you an entire review packet that details exactly what's on the test. Super nice and really helpful. One of my favorite professors yet, really prepares you for precal
Before starting this class I was not feeling confident, but professor Medrano is a great teacher and put me at ease. There is a test for every 1 or 2 chapters. He gives you exercises to practice before the test and he gives you all the formula on the test so no need to memorize them. I would take any class that he teaches. Highly recommend him.
Dr. Medrano is a very intelligent professor. He is there for you and will work with the class if there is an issue. He took homework problems off if the class agrees that it is difficult. Stay after exam for EC! He is a good person. His class is as interesting as a statistics class gets. Final exam was fun and the perfect way to end a fun semester.
He is awesome teacher. He provided good notes and responded all questions. I 100% recommended Doctor Medrano
A little slow and boring for lectures but he's great for going over problems from hw that were challenging and may sometimes even spend a full lecture answering your questions.
I took Dr. Medrano's Calc 1 , and I recommend it, despite not being the easiest. Why? It prepares you for what's ahead. There is not a lot of hw (WebAssign), but several tests (6), most of them with extra credit available and main formulas. He does answer questions if you have them, but I believe his strong point is clarity. He also has a humor.
I took this class over summer. Professor Medrano isn't the most extroverted guy in the world and is quite soft-spoken, but he is the real deal. He gives you an explicitly stated step-by-step approach to solving problems that takes a ton of the grey area out of the material. My big advice for this professor: ask questions. He will help you.
Professor Medrano is a super chill dude. He owns a sweet collection of marvel hats that he wears to class. Get ready for a chill class but a decent amount of studying. He can be quiet but loves to take any question you might have.
He needs to rethink his career choice. He clearly is not comfortable presenting material to a large crowd of students. He rarely looks out to the class to gauge the student's comfort. When he does look out to the class to answer questions, he puts in the minimum effort to answer the question. It's almost as if he doesn't know the material...
Really quiet guy and takes a good deal of time to answer questions. Your grade relies on tests and quizzes alone though as long as you've been doing the homework you shouldn't have any problems. All notes from his class are posted on BB right after so there's not too much to worry about if you miss class. He does keep track of attendance though.
If you want to learn Calculus, do not take his class. Yes, he does offer extra credit, but his lectures are mundane. Barely tries to engage with students at all. I've tried to ask him for help, but I've learned most of the content through videos online. Only lectures off the slides that he posts online after class. Take another prof if you can.
He always asks if there are any questions. Several students, including me, ask questions and he answers them. He gladly helps you when you ask questions in person, through email, or through WebAssign.
This professor is nice, but he is a bit boring. He will help you if you need it, but expect to do some reading just to fully understand the material. Nearly half of the class dropped halfway through the semester. I don't recommend him.
We had a full class on the first day of class, way over the max. Six weeks later, there are still more than the class cap. The exams are pretty straight forward. I love his study guides. The questions are pretty similar to the review exercises, so there are no surprises.
Dr. Medrano is great! He lets you participate and solve the problems as a class instead of just going through the thinking himself. He's really approachable too so if you have any questions just ask.40% webassign homework,40% exams, 20% final. Tests are easier than hw but you'll regret it if you dont study! Chill professor and totally recommend! :)
Dr. Medrano has a VERY difficult course. I know Calculus isn't an easy topic, but what really makes it difficult is that 80% of the grade is in the 3 exams. No exams get dropped, so if you do bad on one, your chances of passing the class are over with. Doesn't help that he is a VERY tough grader, and breezes through difficult subjects quickly.
I had this professor for Math 46 and it ws just draining. His lectures are complicated and when it comes to ask questions about the lectures he doesn't like going over it. He's just poor caring for his students and half way the semester 75% of students dropped out. Make sure you think twice attending his class.
I do not recommend taking him if you can. He does not have a clear grading criteria at all, his grading fluctuates a lot. His tests are very difficult with no curves (unless the whole class fails it). The test averages were always below 50%. His lecture is not too helpful either with the added boring and monotone voice.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! This professor is part time and does not care at all about you, your grade or how he teaches his class. His lectures were very unclear, he would not explain what he had just done. At the end of the semester he knew it was crucial for some people to pass and he did not put his grades in until after break. HE IS PART TIME!!!!
Our class was based on Hw (20%), Pre lecture (Extra Credit), 2 Exams (25% each) and a final(30%). The exams are not really hard, similar to the ones from textbook excercises. If you study it, you'll definitely pass. If you don't, you'll regret. Mr. Medrano is really nice and willing to help you. Sit in the front!! And... FOCUS
In order to do well in this class you have to participate, you have to come to class prepared and be ready ask questions! He won't give extra help if you do not ask for it. Don't sit in the back and expect him to give you the answers! Talk to him and he is willing to help you! Go to office hours, create your own study guides, practice &participate!
Really liked Dr. Medrano's straight forward approach. You get graded on homework and three tests, so you definetly want to start strong in order to finish strong. If you don't understand something make sure to ask he's super good at taking time to walk people through things.
Medrano's test are ez'r than the HW, lectures well and is uber helpful @office hrs. HW worth 20% of grade-Chegg has answers. Test prob's almost identical to ez'r HW prob's & study guide tells u exactly what 2 study. I did all HW (only grasped 1/2) & did several practice test to get an A. I don't excel at math but he makes an A in 151 very doable
Fantastic professor! This is an extremely difficult class; he breaks hard concepts down to make them much more tangible, and provides lots of little tricks to help! He wants you to pass and is there to help if you ask. Do all hw & prelecture problems(extra credit), and study to keep old concepts fresh (3rd exam cumulative). Grade is off 3 exams+ hw
Great math professor! Calc 2 is tough course but Medrano broke down tough concepts into much easier ones. Got a C in Calc 1 but in A in his class. Would def take him again. Do the HW and you'll do well.
If you don't have formulas and the unit circle memorized then you will have a difficult time in this class. He expect you to KNOW the foundations of mathematics, no cheat sheets or calculators on any of the exams. Grading is STRICT. His lectures are monotone but don't mind because his examples on the board are step-by-step in detail.
If you think you're going to get higher grade your wrong! This class is extremely hard! this class was full beginning of the class and waitlist topped to get in! after 1st exam half of the students dropped the class with W! The class average was 50%! I personally don't understand the way he teach! He give you a lot of homework( online homework $100
Begining of the class he will tell you how many students got C in calc 3! He is way to much strict. I never got that low on my math exam! He give a lot of HW + rereading homework! Just listen to me and don't take this class with him! he teaches 3 sections in on class everyday! No calculator no cheat sheet is allowed on tests !
Archie is an incredible teacher. If you work hard and show up to class he will find ways for you to succeed. That being said he wants you to get to a certain level of understanding but he will help you along the way and develop you mathematical skills along the way. Archie was my inspiration to become a math minor. Take his Class!!
I guess his major room for improvement are his lectures, a little too all over the place and it needs more structure. However, hes a nice guy and is understanding. if you put the work in to try and learn it on your own and go to him during office hours you will do fine in the class. Webassign sucks though
Clearly explains concepts/proofs behind the topic you're covering then goes through example exercises with the class. Tests are very fair, gives a great review before each test for you to practice so there are no surprises (even offers extra credit questions!). Really relaxed and down to earth professor.
Dr. Medrano is an awesome professor. He is a caring guy if you would take the time to get to know him. Do not let these other posts confuse you into not taking his course. Homework is definitely tough but because he gives you a week to complete it, there should be no excuse. Gives exam reviews and EARNED E.C. I would definitely reccomend. (: - DS
Calculus 2 FALL 2017: -No calculator, no cheatsheet on Exams. -4 exams (lowest drop), 1 Final(25%), Hw online Webassign (15%). He is a tough grader on exam, take off too many points over small thing on exams. Class average exams always around 65%. Goodluck taking him.
Exams are fair - questions are pretty much the same as the practice exercises, so no surprises, plus there's opportunities for EXTRA CREDIT!!! Highest scores are always over 100%!!! Very helpful during office hours! Explains solutions so simply, anyone can understand!
Dr. Medrano is an excellent professor who sincerely cares about his students. He has 4 tests and a final; lowest test gets dropped. He's a lenient grader but he will strike your test with red markings if you're not specific with your techniques. However, this will only improve your math game. If you study like a normal student should, you'll pass.
Dr. Medrano will help set a strong foundation for anyone taking Calculus. He gives plenty of examples from the online homework to exercises in the text and integrates the concerns/skills all of his students in that class has. The best part is that the concept is easily grasped with the tough problems performed in class. Would take him again!
Explains concepts/proofs clearly before moving into examples to see things in action. Lectures are more like what you'd expect at a UC rather than a community college . Tests, however, are easy as he gives a range of exercises to practice before a test so there are no surprises (and 10 points EC per test) . Easy A if you do the practice exercises
Notation, Notation, Notation. If your Calc 1 prof wasn't a stickler then it can be hard to get used to. Tests are long, and hard to finish. Make sure to complete the review to make it easier on yourself. Collaborates with the class and will flex HW dates if asked. He also decided to drop an exam score since we all did terrible on at least 1 exam.
Hes always helpful in his office hours. Calc 2 is ruff with all the little details you always need to provide. However, medrano is kind in the class and will push back homework dates if needed. The tests are super fair as well(make sure to show all work) , he gives you the type of questions that will be on the exam, making them straightfoward.
Dr. Medrano has been one of the highlights of attending Mesa. The material covered in Linear Algebra can definitely be challenging, but his lectures introduce the material in a very approachable manner. His tests are very fair and he offers plenty of feedback while grading. If you're taking linear, do yourself a favor and take it with Medrano!
Definitely take Dr. Medrano for Calc II! It will be difficult to get used to his style at first (no calculator during exams, online hw, etc.), but once you get used to it, his class becomes manageable. His exams are NEVER harder than the homework problems. He's always willing to help, be it in the classroom, or in his office (during office hours).
I took calc 1 with professor Medrano and I really liked his class. I felt like it went on a good place. Since it's calculus, you're expected to know some math but if you don't understand something you can ask and he will always answer questions. 5 exams (drops one) and a final (THIS IS VERY GOOD SINCE THEYRE NOT TOO HEAVY). Careful with notation.
Professor Medrano is a great guy, amazing actually. He wants to help students learn, which is why he gives lots of exercises. Many students complain about him, how he is boring or how his exams are hard. I personally think it was because they did not do enough of the exercises. If you work hard, you're going to ace the tests he gives.
So far, Calculus 1 with Dr. Medrano has been straightforward. The only reason I can see myself not getting a good grade in this class is by not studying or asking questions in class. Like any class, participate will help, especially if you ask about things you are having trouble with, he will answer them to the best of his abilities.
He is one of the best professor I have ever met in Mesa college. He definitely wants to help you if you have any problems or questions to ask. His assignments and exams are very reasonable. If you preview course stuff before going to the classroom and spend fair time to study then getting A will be easy. I would take his class again for sure.
He gives out a lot of extra credits, changed the grading system based on the students need. A very nice person and caring professor. He gives practice problems that are very similar to the exam. He rewards his students with good grade if they worked for it. His lectures are boring to be honest, but his grading criteria made up for it.
Prof. Medrano is a nice professor. He is always available if you need help outside the classroom. Homework is graded, 15% of the overall grade. Reading HW is offered as extra credit! Four tests, where he drops one, plus the final. He provides study guides for the tests. Flexible professor, but could break down more the concepts and the problems.
Hes amazing. I dont understand any negativity on here whatsoever. He gives direct, EXACT study guides with no surprises, aside from the 10 point extra-credit question he offers per-test, which is often verbatim from the text. He responds to emails within the hour. He will clarify lecture points repeatedly before moving on. Will take again, 5/5.
This marvel loving Philippino professor is a steal. He has a cute smile, and really loves deadpool and superman jokes. Don't take his classes if you want to learn. He is only good for his looks. Have fun future students. Jk he isn't that bad.
A pleasure to take on as instructor. Grade consists mostly of tests but if you show up to class, you will do well on it. There were also a lot of extra credit opportunities that can boost your grade. Would take again
I enjoyed the class. Dr Medrano was very structured and straightforward as far as what was expected of us, yet still took the time to give attention to those who asked for help.
If you take any math course with Doctor Medrano be ready to be a master in whatever it is he's teaching you. Don't just rely on the lectures to learn the content. Read the textbook chapter that will be discussed in class and show up to class everyday and you will find the class to be a breeze. I never thought math could be fun until I had Archie!
This is the class where you get to decide whether you're serious about your field or not. It's not easy. Dr. Medrano is a great tutor however. He takes great care to pay attention to everybody's needs and help them appropriately. Just put in the work, and you will come out of this class with a greater understanding of the world.
He is very socially awkward which throws off the class dynamic. He knows his math but I feel very indifferent about this class. I passed but I feel like I didn't learn much because the class was accelerated. He is average, at best and his tests can be very confusing. I would not take him again but you can try his class out and see if you connect
Grades on tests only and doesn't do well at teaching at all. He says he quit his career to help students bc he thought he'd be better at that. He honestly can't teach bc he has no ability to speak. Now there are those that may give him a good grade, but I'm telling you, if you're average don't waste your time. I wasted my time and I'll be retaking.
Does not lecture. Doesn't go over theorems/concepts. Doesn't even lay the foundation for what you'll be learning. Instead every class is a open study session with him referencing problems at the end of each chapter which means you are left on your own to learn the material. The level of scrutiny in his Exam grading is insane, 90% correct get 3/20.
did not return our 2nd of 3 exams until after the drop date so i couldn't even make a judgement call on whether to withdraw or remain in the class. had i known my score i would have taken the W but he takes a month to grade each exam and those are all your score is based on. i also believe hes either inexperienced or has no business teaching.
I took his accelerated math course and he didn't even attempt to teach the material, if he even knew how. He would tell us to read the chapters before class and then his "Lecture" would be to answer any questions we had about it. His tests would always cover different material than what was on the reviews. Least favorite professor I've had.
I took Trig and Precalc with Dr. Medrano. If you want to try for an A, then math is about practice and Medrano provides extra practice. The tests are challenging, but it will be straight from the homework/book/extra materials. Do the extra work and you will be rewarded. Medrano has a great personality, and an awesome collections of hats.
I took Pre-Calc with Dr. Medrano. The lectures were very confusing and I spent most of my time in tutoring trying to teach myself because he was so bad. Even more awkward was when he emailed me and asked me to write a review for him after the class was over. Nice guy, but terrible professor. Also, test questions were nothing like homework or text.
Professor Medrano seems like a nice guy but I'm concerned about his teaching. He would ask us to read the book and in class, we would each do a problem on the board. He never did anything or taught us calculus. I ended up dropping because the class was a joke. Not a fan of his "teaching" and he seems very anti-technology
He is a friendly person, but teaching wise is a different story. The class has become a joke. We basically teach ourselves. We'll ask a question and he walks away right in the middle of the question. He'll expect us to do something his way, but we don't know his way if he wont tell us. And we don't end up getting full credit even if we did.
Calc isn't for me thus why I found exams are really difficult, but homework does help. Lectures are helpful and all answers are clearly answered. Overall great person. Definitely consider this class
Professor Medrano will confuse you throughout the semester. He will "teach" you something but he will also expect you to know the stuff already. I use to know a lot of things he "taught" because it was sort of like reviewing but when he made a lesson on that topic, he just confused me all over again. NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL!
What a frustrating class. I'm sure Dr. Medrano knows what he's doing but I thought he was poor at communicating concepts. If math doesn't come easy to you, I recommend another professor or seeing a tutor while in this class. For a regular 16 week class, we had 52+ assignments on MyMathLab. I, along with most of the students in my class, struggled.
A lot of people on here are giving him bad reviews, and I do not understand. I took his discrete math (245) summer course and I thought he was really good. He follows the textbook and his lectures are easy to follow but challenging at the same time. I think people give him bad ratings because the course material can be hard at times. He's great!
PhD Medrano is AWESOME! Clear and creative lectures! If you really want to get ahead in the field of Mathematics, Engineering, Medicine, and or Physics, Doc. Medrano is the professor to take! He KNOWS and UNDERSTANDS MATHEMATICS in a deep way. PUT THE EFFORT AND STUDY. He is very helpful too! You could take an easier professor but will you learn?
One of the best math professors I've had. Very approachable in class and office hours. If you're algebra skills are not solid, this class will be somewhat challenging. He has great algebra skills and explains new topics very well. Very exam heavy and gives partial credit for work. Do the exam reviews because they tremendously help you.
His lectures are mediocre at best: he briefly explains each chapter's materials then goes on to write entire answers to some problems on the board with virtually no explanation. Your grade is weighed heavily on exams, and exams differ heavily from the provided "study guide" along with taking 2+ weeks to grade exams. Be prepared to self teach A LOT.
Medrano is a good but very tough professor. He really makes you work for your grade and will take points off for any mistakes that you make on exams even if you got the answer right (Math isn't about answers). But getting an A isn't that hard as office hours is the best way to study for exams since he will help you with practicing for exams.
continuation his introduction of a new topic normally consisted of jumping into a problem and having students do the very next one. Explanations were not clear and usually raised more questions. Lectures were not organized. When students asked for explanations his favorite response is do I have to? His effort was as low as the passing rate.
HIGHLY unorganized. He attempts to solve problems from the chapter and then later give us the formula making the students very confused. The study guide was useless. We didn't receive test grades back until 3+ weeks later. "Do I have to?" was a response to a students question when asked to show something. Never emailed back. Unnecessary test marks
Im going to write a few things I wish others did when I was in his class. He is a very tough grader when it comes to the exams. You should really be careful with your limit and integral notations. Take notes of how he solves the problems in class and do the same on exams step by step. Practice the exam guide it really helps.
You need to go to office hours regularly in order to do well in this class. Make sure you know the specific notation he is looking for on tests. Do all the practice problems (even tho there is a lot). Ask questions each lecture or else you will be lost by the next class. He gives a lot of partial credit and is overall a really nice guy.
He's a nice guy and it's a decent class is you are prepared to learn on your own. The average for the first test was around 51% and wasn't curved.
Archie Medrano is a very dedicated professor. His lectures are very fast pace so I would recommend preparing for class ahead of time. He has very taught grading criteria so make sure your algebra is strong is you are detailed oriented. Overall, if you reproduce the techniques and format given in class + PRACTICE You should pass
Tests make up 90% of grade. 10% Webassign homework. Good office hours and curves the final. Generous with partial credit but does not round your grades up. Clear lectures but you won't enjoy it if you do not like math to begin with. Attendance is not mandatory. He cares and wants you to do well. Talk to him about video games and get brownie pts.
Good teacher, not very interactive. Fair grading for non-math majors. Final grade depends on assignments and homework (which you can retake over again) and not on tests/quizzes. Different then most other math classes I've taken (not a bad thing). Smart, just not personable, so get ready to read the book.
for the most part used the examples in the book for lecture.. He would explain in depth anytime there was a question Starts class at exactly the class time I got a couple points marked of for notation on the test make sure you use proper notation. Homework and group project both for your benfit in points.
If you do not like teaching yourself how to do things yourself, this is not the teacher for you. He would often do the work but never explain it, so it's no different to just skipping class. He's very exam heavy but he will curve the exam if the test average is low. Overall not a hard class but be prepared to self learn.
