horrible! I'm a straight A student, this guy just wanted to fail us. hard exams, a lot of work, believes this is the only class we're taking! save your gpa, save your time, you will not learn much about futures. I hear Rentzler is a little better.
professor should be teaching a non finance class. cannot teach, big mistake picking up this class
Disregard the other comments. Its mostly from students who were unwilling to do the work and were simply not up to the challenge brought by this professor who has real world experience and shares it with students. Outstanding knowledge of the topics, very articulate, and extremely caring and helpful. Highly recommended.
This guy is one of the best professors at Baruch College. I have to warn you: If you are stupid and/or lazy, do not take him. He will give you a hard time if you do not study. Highly recommended.
I agree most of the previous comment, only except the hard part. This subject itself is not easy, but I believe he teaches everything we need to know in class, the rest just depend on how much effort you put in outside the class. Like he said at the beginning, if you put 7 hours minimum to study each week, you will get a B. overall I like the class
He is a good Prof only in terms of teaching in class but He did not hold any office hours. He was really not responsible in terms of grading the exams on time, he hardly replied student's emails. DO NOT take my wrong, I got a really good grade in the course but i wish he were more responsible & disciplined. Also, he is really hard. Good Luck.
The class is ridiculously easy, it's the professors exams that make it difficult. He does not look to grade you based on what you know but looks to take off points for stupid things he has never taught. Once you fail the midterm acing the final is easy because you know what the exam will look like. DOES NOT PROVIDE STUDY MATERIALS!!!! TAKE IF SMART
I forgot to say another thing. I am the one who said that If you are lazy and/or stupid, do not take him. I just wanted to add that the homework he made us do in excel, I am using it to trade options myself. It's not high end stuff, but you know what? It helps a lot. Wake up people. This guy is the best. I would give everything to work with/for him
The class was fairly easy and although I didn't have much interest in the subject I learned a few useful concepts. The professor makes the class more fun and entertaining otherwise it is hard to go through the 2.5 hours of summer sessions. He has real life experience in the world of finance, therefore his knowledge is not just dry and textbookish a
Easy Class. Horribly hard Exam. Fun Class. Poor Grade. NO BOOK. NO SLIDES.
Prof is magnificent! Easy class, no books. Hardly much studying. Lenient grader. Light atmoshere. Definately take him
Excellent professor who really teaches from experience; he is a smart professional who makes twenty times more what the ordinary person can do on WS. This is an upper level class and it requires a special attention. Work hard and be smart and creative as this is what will help you on midterm and a final exam. You will have to put 8 hours/week for B
Let me add more: On his midterm..he tells us to study from the book and the CFA exam..but then he puts stuff a load of semi strong/weak form.. The exam had question based on each other. So if you got the 1st on wrong, guess what you got the others wrong as well.
If you want to learn finance dont take him. he wastes so much time on unimportant things and doesnt know how to explain the material.missed the class like 6times so he rushed through the last 2 chapters. he is very arrogant
I cant explain how lucky I am. Had very little interest in the topic, but after taking his class I could see making a career in Finance. Never had someone so knowledgable and so passionate about a subject teach my classes. Alot of lazy students wasted his and my time and hopefully he failed them. Take his class and take it often. You will learn alo
In the end-he wasn't bad at all-this is college-not grade school-u HAVE to apply yourself in order to get good grades & if you dont-then there is no one to blame but yourself. I got a good grade b/c I busted my a$$ off thats all to it. If a class is hard-study harder! If u put your mind to something u can do it regardless of who's teaching.
I think all the comments have been exaggerated. This class wasn?t as horrible as pictured by any means. You get out of this class just as much as you put into it. I got a descent grade because I applied myself.
Class by itself was fun. The tests were pretty hard. I got a better grade than I thought I as going to get. If you do the homeworks and review the material, he tells you to, you'll get a decent grade. It is hard to study for the conceptual questions on tests because there is so much material and so few questions.
He is very funny. Talks about AIG and his life, but he should spend more time teaching and go into details. When he was actually teaching he was very good at explaining it. PLEASE TAKE TEACHING SERIOUSLY. Missed the class 5times.Dont put down Baruch students
I had never had A in any of my finance classes before.. finally have an A for this one which is very pleasantly surprising.. I never knew what to expect in his exams.. his exams were hard but he is a leniet grader..I do respect that guy a lot.. He is a very knowledgeble...wish he'd teach other classes.. I hope I can work for him one day..
Mobasheri is probably a very smart guy, he is just not meant to teach (FYI i got an A from him) He trashes Baruch as a low-level school(even tho he got PhD from here), he can't stay focused on the topic and constantly distracts on how financially independent he is and how stupid the rest of the world is. HW resembles exams just 20%. Good luck w him
Some of the comments here are really really ridiculous. This guy is magnificant. He is one of the best professors I have had at Baruch. I would take him again and again. The students writing these comments are really the dumb, and stupid ones who dont want to do anything but get a passing grade and get a job. I highly recommend this guy to everyone
Wake up everyone. Half of you dont bother doing the work he tells you to do and then you complain. He is a brilliant Prof. He knows his stuff alot more than others in the Dept. Half of the students in my class deserved to fail and yet he passed them. I learned so much from his class. Wish he taught 4710. I agree with below if you can take him, do i
He is tough. There is no question about it. But he is very frank about it at the begining of the class so that people dont get the wrong impression. His teaching style is highly professional. He is clear, articulate and quite patient. If you are not going to put in the time he demands of you then your in trouble. If you do, you will learn a ton.
The Real Bottom-Line:Terrific and Fun. I learned alot. Hard class, but worth it. I agree with some of the comments here. There are too many lazy and stupid students at Baruch who complain because they are too dumb to succeed. I just wish there were more profs like him. Hopefully he teaches other classes. Highly recommended.
He is a tough professor. Test are tough too. You need to devote yourself to this course in order to get a decent grade
Pretty darn tough. Need to devote alot of time to his class. Teaches it very well. Knows his stuff.
One sentence should do it: If you want to learn alot its simple, take him. He's worth your time.
This professor is not the easiest, but he is fair and helpful. While the material may be confusing at times, Prof. Mobasheri provides us with knowledge that is apllicable to the real world. This class especially helped me get better at using Excel for his homework assignments.
Prof. Mobasheri is both an instructor and successful practitioner who has worked at Wall Street's top firms. He has done graduate studies in both economics and finance. As a result, he can offer insight on just about any topic related to the class. While you need to study the textbook by yourself to learn the material, this class is invaluable.
Great teacher. A lot of people have said bad things about this professor in the past but they are not true. Very knowledgeable teacher with crystal clear clarity. Very helpful. Doesnt put up with any bullcrap and lets you know from the beginning. If you have a desire to learn finance this professor is a definate must take. You wont be disappointed.
awesome teacher. His teaching style is very clear and articulate. If you have a real desire to learn finance this professor is a must take. Not an easy A but you will learn alot. This teacher can answer almost any question related to finance and is very helpful. Definately recommend.
Great teacher really knows his stuff. An experianced professor with real-world knowledge. Very helpful and keeps your attention. This professor is a must take.
Ok so I don't know my grade yet so can't really say how I feel. The comments posted on 12/14/09 are obviously from the same person because they can't even spell DEFINITELY right. Not such a bad professor, but the tests are not at all relative to what we did in class. Hopefully I will be as surprised with my grade as I was with the test
The bottom line:The good students have written the good reviews and the lazy ones the bad ones. He's going to challenge u. If u are up to it then take him and learn slot. If ur lazy then forget about it. Your not gonna do the work and in the end ur gonna complain.
Can be summed up in two adjectives: arrogant and incompetent! More than half the semester goes through useless .ppt slides, in other words you have to read the book and teach yourself. Midterm/Final are not MC but that's not the problem, he does nothing to prepare you for them, your not even given an example of the layout or what to expect. AVOID!
Not an easy class. You have to study a lot in order to get a good grade. Homeworks are easy and help you to understand the material. If you are Fin major, take him...
I agree, you will have to read the book in order to do well and understand the material. However, during the class the professor talks a lot about the real world "out there" which makes the class interesting. I have no idea why everyone did so poorly on the midterm, I found it to be a joke: 6 or so questions, no multiple choice, but very easy: who
...read the book should have done well. The final was a bit harder, but still comprehensible. I think, an easy A...
Very knowledgeable professor..I learned a lot. Tests may be a bit tricky, but he is a very fair grader. Lectures were far more interesting than other finance classes I took; he has a lot of insight.
Nice professor, and really likes it when the students ask him questions. He is not a tough professor, but the course material is hard to grasp in general. Listen to him, do the assignments, and most importantly ask questions and you will do well. Not an easy A but absolutely attainable.
Not a tough grader, he just expects you to understand the material in the class and if you do then the exams are easy to score high on. Half the class failed the midterm and the other half scored 85 or above. Offers extra credit too to pick up your grade. And a hot pepper by a slim margin though, but, still makes listening in class a bit easier.
This is a 4000 level Economic course in a school highly concentrated in Finance, of course, it will be hard. The professor expects students to work for the grade and not just show up to class, memorize some slides and leave without much understanding of economic thought. That being said, he says "um" a bit too much. Makes listening tougher.
I do not know why some students are deceiving themselves that tis Prof. is a great professor. I saw my GPA fall failed the class and had to retake it again. Such an arrogant personality, wants you to fail. never clarifies what he will bring on the exams. spent the whole semester and waisted my money coming to class and listening to him.
The class is well taught and the professor is knowledgeable of the material. Don't get complacent if you do well on the midterm--the final will surprise you. A great deal of material for final exam; you can expect anything you cover throughout the course. It is a 4000 level course so expect to be challenged.
First of all AIG is his only subject that's what he's mostly talking about. He doesn't expect you to come to class and love it when he sees that nearly half of the class is failing. You have no clue what will be in the midterm since what he only talks about is AIG AIG. If u love ur GPA just avoid this guy!!! AND i have a feeling he's rating himself
If you really want to learn about Monetary policy and much more about economics choose this professor.I am glad that I took his class. He knows very well what he is teaching and what is most important - he knows how to teach, explain the material which is not that easy.if you will come to his lectures, listen carefully you will be good on his exams.
Professor Mobasheri provides easy to understand lectures, which is important since the textbook is a bit hard to really comprehend. Although attendance is not mandatory, you should go since it will help you prepare for his exams better. He is very enthusiastic and passionate about the subject.
He's alright. His ad nauseum boasting and name dropping are a bit ridiculous but his class is actually very good because he teaches the subject matter in theory and in practice. Yeah he's full of himself, but overall he is a descent professor. And everyone is right.. he prides himself on being a tough grader and does not curve
Honestly if you want to pass his class read the textbook religiously. Pay attention in class, take good notes especially in readiness for the midterm, and Final. All the Best
If you want to do well go to class, buy and read the text book, pay close attention to the reviews for the midterm/final. What is reviewed in class is on the exams, there are no curve balls. Subject matter is interesting. **4 papers 40%, midterm 25%, final 30%, participation 5% Ace the final and you ace the course regardless** Best of Luck!
Great professor one of the best at Baruch. It is true that he is full of himself, but you will learn a lot from him. Specially from the first hours of class, which is a discussion about current economics facts. Take him if you want to learn, dont worry about the essays, he does not read them. The final is hard, but the midterm is easy.
GREAT PROFESSOR! THE COURSE MATERIAL IS DIFFICULT BUT THE PROFESSOR IS EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE, GUY KNOWS HIS STUFF. YOU WILL DEFINITELY LEARN SOMETHING IN THIS CLASS. EXAM IS FAIR, POSSIBLE TO GET A GOOD GRADE, JUST TAKE GOOD NOTES. IF HE WERE TEACHING ANOTHER COURSE, I WOULD DEFINITELY TAKE HIM. (MIDTERM, FINAL, SHORT PAPERS)
The hardest class ever! Absolutely no help from the professor. Hes too busy in his own world making more money to fill his pocket with. Why does he bother teaching? Expects students to put in 15-20 hours a week for his class (of outside work). AVOID!
He has some problem with his attitude. CAUTION: he is very very arrogant and irresponsible. he may be a knowlegeable person in his field, but he is not a teacher you'll respect. just avoid him.
Pr. Mobasheri is very knowledgeable and has a passion about the subject. You will learn a lot about monetary policy from a person with real life experience.Four papers(2 pages)40%, midterm(25%),final (30%). 5% participation. The book is hard to read but you can always ask professor any questions during office hours.
The Professor is very knowledgeable in Economic field. Even though the attendance is not mandatory, it is better to attend every single class since the exam questions are from the lectures. 2-pages single space four papers, midterm and final. As long as you study, listen to the lecture and take a good notes, grade A is attainable.
First of all, the subject supposed and was quite of interest. I have real work experience and must admit currently employed full time. He is not trying to optimize the study time and make a clear structure so one can get the most from his class and make sense of the book material. But he does have quite an attitude being the chief economist of AIG.
the class is not organized, there are 4 papers, midterm, and final. It took 2 months for professor to check the 1st paper. So by the final, we knew only one grade from 4 papers and grade from midterm. It also took almost a month to finally get final grades.I would not recoment this professor to anyone. Please take someone else or econ 4200 instead
very irresponsible. does not let us know what we got for final grade, final 3 essays (4 total). did you grade the final essays? or base everything on final because you are too busy with aig?
Take this class ONLY if you are planning on visiting the library on a regular basis. Attendance is not mandatory but you cannot pass the class without taking notes since textbooks are difficult to understand and exams are mostly from the material covered in class. Make sure you UNDERSTAND the materials before you take the exams. Unique Prof
You can have high GPA, study a lot and still fail his class. He doesn't care if you work and study full time, or learn anything from his class. He is, however, the best Economics professor in Baruch. He succeeded where most had failed by keeping me awake through his every class. Easy A if you fully understand the material, F otherwise.
The professor will promise you the following and I am confirming it for you as well: "If you are over-loaded you will not do well and may likely fail!" This class is very difficult. Prof. Mobasheri is honest and upfront about this fact, how he grades, and students' requirements.
Prof. Mobasheri is quite knowledgeable in how economics works in the real world. He is always ready to address questions with real data. It can be refreshing to see how ideas play out in reality. The book is difficult, but someone who attends class and writes notes will find that nearly everything from class is in exactly the same form in the book.
This comment is long overdue. If you are a serious ECO student, this class will be instructive & illuminating. You will learn a lot about Mon. policy from an accomplished individual w/real life experience in the field. Use this to your advantage and ask questions. There are 4 papers40%, midterm(25%),final (30%)5% class part. Take notes and listen.
One of the worst professors I've had at Baruch so far. I'm surprised at the positive comments. For FIN3610 course lacks structure, he rambles about things we already know, draws impractical pictures which you wouldn't actually use on an exam, makes you learn the expanded formulas & constantly assigns graded excel hw that is completely irrelevant.
ridiculous midterm exam, confusing wording, and the average mt is 40/100 for the WHOLE CLASS, no formula sheet.
Best Teacher at Baruch! Smart, knows the material hands down, lots of real world examples, and great career advice. The mid-term was hard, but I did well and only because I studied really hard. He's up front about everything. If you are lazy and wont study, you are not going to do well. Just read the comments below from one of those students.
This rating is misleading, maybe good for economics but definitely not for fin. Exams are free response, if you mess up one question you will fail because questions are based off the previous one. doesnt believe in curving. exam questions worded badly. Day of midterm he taught a lesson, wasnt enough time to finish it for most people. class avg 40
The only professor ive ever had who WILL go out of his way to make your life miserable.
He is very hard BUT will make you work for your grade until you will get it. His theory is " unless you are not passionate about finance then you are in the wrong class" let's get real finance is competitive and if you are not passionate about it you won't succeed. Take him if you want to challenge yourself.
Great Professor! Very hard class but you will be ok if you study. He is the only person at Baruch who took his time to give some career advice to students. I wish it was not my last year because what he said about pursuing your passion instead of financial interest makes a lot of sense. Most of students in Baruch are in wrong majors.
Professor has a lot of experience, and it is actually interesting to listen to his lectures. But whatever he says does not relate to the homework he is asking for neither to both midterm or final. I am an A student and this is my first C. I guess i am just used to common sense exams where you are given whatever you were taught
You can get a good grade in this class if you study hard. This professor does explain well in class. However, he does not care about his students and never reply any email. The HW are on connect but all chosen by computer system. Most of the HW does not help. The professor refuse to give students help. Always last minute notice about his absence
Great professor who knows his material. HOWEVER HE DOES NOT TEACH WHAT IS ON HIS EXAM, NOR DOES HIS HOMEWORK AND TEST REVIEW ON CONNECT HELP AT ALL. His review on connect was very basic while his exam was on another level. I got an A on both Fin 3710 and Eco 400, the other two core Finance class, but Im fearing for a C in this class
He said himself that last semester the class average for the midterm was a 42. This semester, it improved... to a 55.
terrible
Definitely not an easy class. He has a lot of real world experience and his exam questions really make you think. No "plug and chug" in this class at all. I will probably get a C in the class but I probably learned a lot more than I would have if I took another professor. If you just want an easy A then this guy is not for you.
Almost the start of the spring semester and this guy hasn't posted Fall grades. Due date for grades by the system was before new years, therefore he has to post them by going personally to the registrar's office. Since he rarely goes on campus unless to teach, those grades will be posted really late. Lack of personal responsibility to say the least
Horrible, horrible, horrible professor! DO NOT EVEN THINK OF REGISTERING FOR HIS COURSE. You will regret it and most end up dropping the course later on. Didn't have a syllabus until mid-semester, boring as ever, and NEVER responds to student emails. A complete nightmare for such a difficult course with heavy content.
1) No syllabus until mid of sem 2) Unreachable via email "ever" 3) If he teaches (only) types of apples. He will ask you to write history of apple, regression of apple and wants you to draw graph amd joint distribution of apples and so on and on. Only 6 questions in midterm out of 70, 8 left without writing a single word, 20 dropped. 30 failed. GL!
79 students took the class. 20 students droped before midterm. 40 students left after the midterm. There were around 50% drop rate. Aviod him if you are Financial aid student.!! Aviod him if you are Financial aid student.!! Aviod him if you are Financial aid student.!!
Really great professor, gives a ton of career and school advice. Two test, midterm and final each worth 50%. Knows the material extreamly well, please read the chapters prior to class so that you can get the most out of the lecture. Weekly homeworks on connect.
You can tell that he doesn't have enough time for the course. He ends class early, doesn't have a lesson plan, never goes into the computations in class, only the conceptual. I didn't get a syllabus until week 9, he is a horrible professor. He just doesn't care about his students and talks about Donald Trump every class. Don't take him, please.
As far as an educator goes, Professor Mobasheri is crystal clear and high quality. If you read the textbook and pay attention the class isn't killer. You must study but you might actually like doing that considering how interesting the topics can become, despite what is usually a dense class.
Eco-4000 is one of the hardest course in Baruch. Definitely it is not an easy A class whoever u take. I suggest to take Professor Ardavan because his lecture helps a lot to understand materials. Besides that u will be knowledgeable about career and real world situation. written exam:1 mid, 1 final and online. He curved greatly.
written exam: 1 mid, 1 final and online 30%, 40%, and 30% respectively. It is not an easy A class. You should work hard and understands basics. He is liberal for grading. I recommend to take him. Though he didn't take attendance, missing class will be wrong move. Don't drop even if you get between (50-60%). He curved hugely.
