Knows her stuff and makes the class fun. Always willing to help you after class and will even help you with your papers before she marks them if you ask. Good at making difficult concepts easier to understand.
Awesome prof. Invites discussion without making people feel stupid.
good teacher, good understanding of theories, helpful; however very hard to distinguish where she stands on the material she teaches
Very good professor, easy to understand and a person can tell she is very interested in what she teaches. Always willing to help during office hours. Quizzes are quite difficult though. They are based out of the text which is very hard to understand.
Worst prof I have ever had. I will never take another course in Philosophy because of her. I have went to class, paid attention and not learnt one thing. If you value education at all I would recommend NOT taking a class from this prof.
Horrible proff. Half the time I wonder if she even knows what she's talking about. I was really looking forward to taking a Philsophy class and I will never take another one because of her.
to the guy who most recently commented: people who can't spell generally aren't 'equipped' intellectually to pursue philosophy (nothing personal).
ardis is one of the best profs i have ever had
Great Prof! She always wants to help and considers your grades to be a huge deal even if you don't. Her classes are so interesting I definitely recommend taking one.
great prof wicked fun and funny class
So much fun. Take her class if you have the opportunity.
Ardis is a credit to field of Philosophy. She has such a unique and, I'll be it, politically incorrect approach :) to Philosophy that you can't help but be competely enraptured. I mean if she can come up with a Philosophy essay topic that involves Data, Hal, C3PO, and Mr. Smith playing poker, imagine what she can do with the rest of the class.
Ardis is awesome! I loved her class and she made it really fun. If you have the chance take a class from her. She was easy going which allowed the class to go in the direction we wanted to and made for some great discussions.
Ardis is amazing at taking a subject that can seem daunting and cracking it wide open, understanding that Philosophy is what you make of it. She's a very reasonable marker, and her final was no problem so long as you had kept on top of the material and attended class. Really, a prof everyone should experience at least once.
I was in a class of over 60 students a year ago and she still recognizes me and says hi in the halls. Not only is she a kind person, she also explains topics very clearly and marks fairly. Her lecutres are engaging and give you the fundamental knowledge you need for other Philosophy classes.
Really good teacher, makes philosophy very interesting and understandable!!! - any phil class i take in the future will be hers!
crazy-kinda funny.
One of the best Professors in the department. If you show up with an open mind, her class will blow you away!! Just be sure to get her to red ink your papers before you hand them. She is one of those profs that actually WANT you to do well in her course. I would absolutely love to take another course from her.
Excellent teacher that made me want to take more philosophy courses

Ardis loves playing the devil's advocate and challenging her students to question their own beliefs. Her classes are entertaining and if you go to her for help, she will do everything in her power to give you as many resources as possible. Good prof.
Ardis is the perfect prof. - She WANTS you to succeed. If philosophy is your thing you will love her, but if you don't then don't take a philosophy class. She is very helpful, very accessable, very funny, but not a pushover. If you want to learn, she will help you, and it will be fun.
Ardis took over the course for Dr. Viminitz partway through the semester, and was possibly even better than Paul. She is very clear and good at bringing concepts down to a level where they are easy to understand, and also very helpful.
Wow. Amazing prof. She wants you to succeed. She explains things very clearly and if you need help she is more than willing to help you at any time of the day. She is amazing and I will only take phil with her.

Ardis is incredible!! She is interesting, clear and captivating. Invites the class to discuss while still making sure you know the concepts that will be on the test. Shes approachable and easy to talk to in and out of class. And her accents and jokes are hilarious!
Best teacher ever!!!
One of the best teachers ive ever had. She encourages class discussion and no topics are off limit. Great sense of humor.
Very helpful outside the classroom
She's one of the best profs I've ever had. She uses good examples, and has a good sense of humor. She encourages class discussions and is great help. I would definitely take another class with her =]
one of the most annoying profs ive had in my 4 years here.Takes an entire class to explain a single concept. Takes for ever to get to the point. easy class to get a good mark in though, and you don't need to go to class to get a good mark. text is more helpful than she is.
She is a great teacher! Loves to have class discussions and has a great sense of humor! I loved the class and she made the class so much more fun and tried to use different perspectives to make things more clear
Shes a good teacher for the course, yes. The course on the other hand sucks i struggled and it made no sense if you had a hard time reading shakespeare just wait... If you have to take the class do take it with her but if you dont just dont take it
She is a good prof. She made class a lot of fun! She has a good sense of humor. She is good at making things easy to understand and is available for help out of class. She is very helpful with essays and will leave comments to help you out. I would suggest her to anybody wanting to take philosophy.
Awesome Prof! Pay attention in class and you should do fine. Just remember to back up all of your arguments and you'll also do great on papers.
Yeah, this prof might make class kind of interesting but her class is impossible. For someone like me, who is taking this class for an elective and has no proir knowledge or philosophy, its IMPOSSIBLE. Take a different class for an elective, this will not bring up your GPA, its my lowest mark when my other classes are third year bio classes.
Ardis is amazing. She marked papers really easy and helps you prepare very well by providing a worksheet for marks. She tells the funniest stories to keep the class interesting. She is always trying to get you the best grade by providing a redo midterm and calculating our blogging grades muliple ways in order to get the highest mark.
Phenominal!
great proff!!! if you pay attention in class, it is very easy to succeed in this course
Absolutely amazing prof, made me decide to change my major to philosophy! Always keeps things interesting and easy to understand, while challenging beliefs and making you think.
clear lecturer, dedicated to students, and awesome allround
Awesome Prof-for Philosophy. If you like Philosophy take it with her! She wants every student to do the best they can. Very helpful!
Anything I have learned from this class was off of Wikipedia. We never followed the readings from the $90 textbook that I bought. Ardis never provided me with alternatives when I was unable to resubmit my assignment so I received zero. She is extremely difficult to communicate with as my email was backlogged full of her redudancy. waste of time!!!!
Ardis is easily one of the best profs I've ever had. She's accessible, her lectures are interesting, and her presentation of the material is ace. I wish I could have more philosophy classes with her.
I adore Ardis. She is very funny and very helpful. Her lecture was never boring! I would take another class with her any day.
My Favourite Prof. as of yet. Ardis is layed back and makes class interesting while also making you think. Incredible teacher and person.
Ardis awesome. She's hilarious, fun, and engaging, and made Philosophy my favourite class of the semester. I would definitely recommend her to anyone who wants to have fun in class!
Ardis' pedagogy is by far the most comprehensive I've received from any prof. She is an incredibly brilliant mind who is not afraid to share all and everything she knows with her students; she resourceful and very helpful as long as you put effort into helping yourself, she is great with providing options conducive to better understanding:)
Definitely my favorite Prof, very engaging and keeps you interested in the course material. As long as you attend class and take proper notes as well as participate in discussions, class is always interesting. Challenging class but well worth the work to have had Ardis as a Professor.
ardis is very understanding and will actually make an effort to work with your schedule if something comes up. she explains things less formally so they're easier to relate to. Pick her for philosophy 1000. i love her class.
This class has a lot of reading and tests are all writing, (NO MULTIPLE CHOICE) and I found it quite difficult to find answers that Ardis found acceptable. Classes are not very interesting but attendance is mandatory. Group work counts for 25% of mark. Bottom line is there are much easier GLERs than this one.
good class to learn some basic philo. and ardis is very outgoing, swears a lot and makes jokes all the time. but i would not take it if its not part of your requirements. it can be hard and she is a little bias on most topics
You'll learn so much from this class. Ardis is one of the best Profs out there. There is only one problem... Marking Level:Asian
Ardis is a great instructor for an entry-level course like this. She makes the obscurity that is philosophy make sense with examples that actually hold relevance for first year students. However, don't be fooled by her easy-going nature, her marking is exactly what you'd expect from a hardcore philosopher. However, the work is well worth it. Great!
you have to put a lot of work into assignments and studying but if you go to class she summarizes everything into words way easier then the textbook. Marks easy on the one paper you have to do. Tests are all written, but as long as you know the general concepts they're not that hard
Ardis is hilarious and loves what she does. Be prepared to participate in group work and to do lots of writing on exams. Many opportunities to gain marks, as long as you come to class and put some independant thought into the topics, you will do fine.
Ardis is interesting and funny! She will give you EVERY chance to do well in the course and she want's you to do well. Her note outlines are printable and you can bring them to class. She also puts a study guide online. You have to read the text and you should attend class to get the most out of it.
Great teacher! One of the best clases I have ever taken.
Ardis is absolutely hilarious. If you're into Philosophy type stuff, it would be a super easy class, especially with Ardis. She is approachable and very helpful. I have very different personal views from Ardis, but I never once felt like my views were degraded. She's great!
absolutely amazing professor- very clear with how she marks, expectations are crystal clear, such a helpful professor. for example- she gives study questions at the end of every section, do them and your set for her exams. nothing on the exam will be something that wasn't covered on the study questions. such a good prof who cares about her students
Ardis was a great prof, however, she has this quirky little thing where you write a small paper and submit it online, and four of your classmates grade it. This leads to the most arbitrary system of marking that I could imagine. The grade is determined by your classmates' understanding of the material. It fluctuates wildly for no reason at all.
Ardis is an AMAZING prof! She knows her stuff, and is very approachable outside of class. This class requires a bit of extra work, but if you do the readings, it's not difficult
Ardis is a truly exceptional professor. Definitely my favourite thus far. Her classes are interesting, and she is truly dedicated to her students. If you are willing to work, she will spend crazy amounts of time to help her students. I would definitely recommend her classes!
Ardis is a great professor. She knows her stuff, and is willing to put concepts into a context where all can understand. She also keeps control of the class during class discussions by keeping things appropriate and applicable to the course materials, has no problems calling people out who arent respectful, and those arguments which hold no logic.
AMAZING TEACHER!! So enthusiastic I love her class so much! I recommend her classes to everyone if you invite a challenge to your philosophy and a fun time!
I Recommend.
Ardis is great at putting philosophy in easier terms to understand. Loved her class- she is great. Kind of a tough marker but not hard to get a B.
She is a ton of fun!
she is not a typical prof in teaching methods. you must read and think to pass her class & participate! she is very fair and loves what she does. mind blowing class if you care at all about philosophy. office hours, USE them.
Very helpful and a delight to speak with. She is a difficult marker, but if she sees that you care, you may get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to a grade bump. So, use her office hours, send her emails, and ensure that she knows you are taking the class seriously! Readings are a must, but Wikipedia is sufficient in a pinch.
Make sure you do your readings every week. They may be long and you may not understand what you're reading 80% of the time, but Ardis does a good job of explaining everything in class. The notes are posted on Moodle, but in-class debates usually end up as test questions, so attend most of the classes if you can!
This class will make you work, and work hard to understand the concepts. You will need to spend a lot of time deciphering the material in order to better understand it. Ardis is always available for extra help and will explain where you went wrong on assignments and tests so that you know what she's expecting next time. High work ethic is a must.
I loved loved loved Ardis! I have been in University for 5 years now and out of all my professors I would have to say she was my absolute favourite!
Ardis is an amazing prof! I definitely wouldn't hesitate to take another class with her. Tests are tough but fair. Class discussions were interesting, though at times I found them to be confusing. Really enjoyed the debates during group projects.
Awesome person but as my professor she wasn't the best because she was a little confusing when we got into important topics which didn't work out well for my grade.
Great lectures and very interesting class. Would recommend taking this class with Ardis.
I loved sitting her lectures, but the textbook was online and reading was marked. However, there were online quizzes you could use your notes for. She's hilarious and will definitely try to help you out if you don't understand something, but get ready to study your butt for her tests. They aren't the easiest things.
ardis is a great instructor, she's clear and gives great examples. if you don't understand something she helps you understand. textbook was online.
She's funny and makes complicated concepts easy to understand. The online textbook had a lot of extraneous material that ended up not being on tests, but you get marks for reading the material. Attending lectures is essential to understanding the concepts. This is not a class you can skip and still do well in. Get ready to think hard and love it!
Ardis is great. She's knows what she's talking about and is very good imparting that knowledge onto her students. If you have any philosophical question, she's happy to give you an answer if you ask her. Lectures are very interactive which is a big plus.
Ardis makes philosophy extremely interesting, and teaches it in an interesting way. Throughout the whole semester you don't really get a clear answer on anything; instead it keeps you thinking. Her class is tough, there is a lot of reading, and you really need to know your stuff or you wont pass the exams.
Best prof. If you want to have a good philosophy class, try to take one with Ardis, she's tons of fun, will argue with you if you want, and wants you to actually get a good grade.
She made the class very interesting, had a clear-cut and fair grading scheme, and was always available for help. Would definitely take again, very great class. Attendance is mandatory, ended up dropping the class because of prolonged absence. Wish I could try again! Has a great online textbook format.
She is an amazing lecturer and wants everyone to do well in her course. Philosophy is really tough unless you are really passionate about it. I would guess that about half of the class dropped. Despite the hard class she was always willing to help and go above and beyond to help if you asked.
Marks extremely hard.
Such an awesome prof but honestly this class kicked my butt. Definitely not an easy gpa booster like many people think but you learn so much, make sure you take more notes on the discussions and not the actual slides, they'll make the application questions on quizzes WAY easier
Ardis really knows what she is talking about and is very willing to help, but attending lectures and taking notes on her discussions are essential to doing well. If you just go off the slides you will have a hard time getting the full meaning of the concepts. Doing the readings before class will make your life much easier.
I took this course because people said it was a GPA booster. I soon learned philosophy was not my thing. Don't waste time writing the PowerPoint notes. What she says is the actual stuff that helps you understand. If you pay attention, get involved in discussions and ask questions you will do well.
This class was so neat! Ardis takes her time to teach and gives funny examples that makes really confusing concepts so easy to understand. You NEED to do the readings and make sure you know your stuff for the mid-term and final. They do not give pity marks. Her lectures are easy going, but she takes assignments seriously. Work hard and have fun!
Shes great! I loved being in her class! Beware of the exams though, theyre pretty tough. The quizzes are super easy if you know what youre talking about. If you dont like reading then dont take this class but other than that fantastic! 10/10 would recommend.
Reading her slides if you don't attend her lectures will confuse you. Her lectures are where she explains everything nicely. I dislike her personality(swears several times each class) & how she uses farming references as a way to teach concepts(not all of us are from farming backgrounds and don't know farming terminology).
Super interactive lectures which really leave you thinking, it really made philosophy fun. The timeline for the course was really structured too which was really nice. The recommended class readings were not necessary at all, I did little to none of it, if you attend lecture she will go over enough information to succeed in the class.
Ardis is amazing. She is funny in her lectures yet you still learn what is necessary. If you participate in discussions I can almost guarantee you will do better in her class, but that is true for most profs.
Lectures were hard to follow and often went off track. If you want to learn anything just read the textbook. Outlines and expectations for assignments were vague no more than two sentences long, so it was difficult to do well in this class.
Her lectures are everywhere, hard to follow along. Have assigned readings and forgot to tell the class. Leaves no details when giving feed back on paper. Would not recommend
Gives little to no feedback on writing assignments, though she will assign 6 - 7 papers per semester. Doesn't actually provide any real content you could take notes on instead just talks for the entire class time and lets her scatterbrain roam. Would not take this class again.
Ardis is an entertaining, kind professor with a unique teaching method that heavily includes students but in the best way possible. She is hilarious, and I found myself laughing multiple times per class. She tries very hard to help people who don't fully understand, but I could see people who have difficulty asking questions have a rough time.
Made an account specifically to make this review. Ardis does not care about her students. If you send her an Email asking for help after missing an assignment or an unfair grade she'll try to get you with a "gotcha" response instead of trying to help. Will NOT take a class of hers again, would recommend avoiding her class if at all possible
Be prepared for 2 exams, group project, and participation - in the last exam there were so many essay questions compared to the amount of time given... I ended up not being able to answer a lot of them and this has never happened to me ever. I'm usually the type to finish first... I'm really disappointed I chose to take this class.
- hard to reach - forgets to assign reading but expect you to read it - constantly mixes up classes - lectures are hard to follow - lecture slides are a couple of words - no clear grading criteria - she makes a spelling error every email/ assignment description
This class was way harder than it should have been. The slides don't make sense, unless she explains everything. Half the classes were on zoom, and it was pretty hard to pay attention the entire time because of how boring they were. I understand that this is philosophy, but it could definitely be more interesting.
Do not take this class! The lectures are borderline useless, annoying. Even if this is a 1st year-level class, there was 3x more work than my higher level courses. This prof asks WAY too much, there is so much reading, every single week, so many papers and peer reviews, it is really time-consuming and IMO does not provide much learning experience.
ZOOM!! class was structured very oddly. participation matters (zoom), tough grader, made no sense in the lectures, notes weren't fully helpful, readings were very long and hard to follow along to. shes funny, and her examples of some things will make you question a couple things but made the class semi enjoyable. exams were odd but not too difficult
you ever had a prof not give you clear assignment details? Or ask things that make no sense because they forget to post notes and slides. Couple that with her "holistic" grading approach (no details/rubric) and classes that are not planned at all, and you'll have Ardis. Before I wrote my final paper I had an A, after I finished with a C. 2.5/10
Ardis gave us an incredible amount of freedom to decide what we will be graded on. She has brought in some amazing and interesting guest speakers. Ardis makes us think deeply about concepts through providing us with challenging discussion questions, but it's easy to do well in her course. Ardis is an incredibly fun and hilarious professor!
If you are looking for structured lectures and clear expectations on assignments... do not take Ardis' class. I genuinely could not tell if she prepared for her lectures or just said whatever came to mind. Her lectures were mildly entertaining and she gave interesting examples, but gave very little guidance with marked assignments.
I will say Ardis was a funny professor but her lectures were a bit confusing and all over the place, and didn't seem to have any structure. Even though this is supposed to be a first year class, it stressed me out 10x more than my other classes, which ACTUALLY had to do with my degree, and it had much more material and reading than my others.
Ardis is a really great teacher and her class was always fun and filled with open discussions. My only complaint is that I wish there had been more direction for how to structure arguments as that came up a lot in assignments but she didn't really go over that in class. This course turned out to be more logic based than I thought it would be.
Ardis is a quirky professor, but her class was surprisingly engaging. While the lectures could be confusing, using unstuckstudy for study prep really helped me grasp the tricky concepts. Recommend for an interesting philosophy elective.
