Awsome teacher. Made Spanish fun and easy to understand. He's very understanding and has a great personality. Exciting and interesting.
good teacher that is a cool guy. I'm a slacker and I still say hey to him when I see him. I would rec.
Good, easy teacher. You'll learn a lot. Lots of homework though!
WONDERFUL TEACHER! I learned the most I've ever learned about Spanish in his class! He makes spanish exciting and fun!
Really cool guy.. course went a little fast, but that wasn't his fault.
An awesome man who has well schooled in the Spanish language, but yet puts it on a level in which everyday people can understand.

Very cool guy. Very nice and makes the class as fun as it can be. He works at Laredo's too and still remembers his students.
Spanish just sucks in general, but Ari makes it atleast not so bad to come to class. He is a cool guy, extremely laid back. If you take spanish, you have to take him, he is by far the coolest prof. in that department.
Great teacher who happens to be a really great guy. My only complaint is that he's sometimes a little too laid back. Other than that he's awesome!
good teacher, nice fellow, class not too bad as long as you keep up with your work. makes the class as good as it can be i suppose. i would want him again if i took Sp. 2
A fun teacher, and very laid back.
Really cool teacher take him if you have a chance.
Ari is the man!! I was never good in Spanish but Ari helped me with my homework and never graded too hard because he knew I was trying. Very dry humoried & freakin' hilarious! I would STRONGLY recommend Ari if you have problems in Spanish.
Ari is in fact, the man.
Ari is the greatest teacher at Auburn....He is so coolm especially when you see him at the bar...lol..His classes are great...if you don't do the homework, you can turn it in late and still get full credit...very laid back and cool..take his class if you can get it..not easy to get tho!
dude, i went to spain with this guy in 99. he is awesome. young kids at auburn: do yourself a favor, take his class, you will not be disappointed.
Cool teacher but not an easy class. I had always gotten A's in spanish with no problem, but am struggling to make an A in this class. He gives alot of quizzes over verbs and his tests are pretty hard, but only because they have random sections in them. Good class but I suggest an easier teacher.
He is great in and out of class. His classes are funny, but you have to do ALL of your work. Go to class and you'll do fine.
Awesome! He's so funny and laid back, and he's willing to help you to the end. I had him for Spanish 1 and Spanish 2, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
ok he is laid back but not hot...please people get a clue.
Great teacher, again, very laid back. He's fun and will understand if you just don't show up one day. He DOES however expect you to show him the same respect that he's showing you. (in other words, GO TO CLASS, he works 3 jobs, you can go to class.)
Mr. Gutman is the greates teacher I have ever had! He was so funny and so laid back. I also learned alot from him too! I would definitley recommend taking his class if you can! I loved him!
Not helpful whatsoever! He kinda picks favorites, and comes in looking hungover EVERY DAY. Never acts likes he's excited to be there. His quizzes are extremely difficult and the tests are near impossible. I had taken 3 years of Spanish BEFORE Elementary Spanish II with him and I barely came out with a C.
Very laid back. Talks to you like an equal, not like you're some dumb college kid. I would tell anyone to take his class. Tests and quizzes aren't that hard, just study well. Gives to interviews which are kind of nerve racking, but he is pretty lenient.
He's a fun guy, very laid back...But I needed to learn Spanish. He puts all the work load on you, doesn't really use visuals or good examples. He will explain things only if you ask, and will occasionally help you out on tests.
Very cool guy. I really enjoyed his class and would recommend anyone to take him.
He is a GREAT professor! He grades his test to help the students not to hurt them. He is awesome and will recommend to anyone!
He really is a nice guy. For the most part his teaching was good. Granted I already knew most of the things covered in class so I don't know how helpful he actually was to other students. I do recommend taking him. He is very laid back and easy going!Go to class, answer questions, and definitely read your blue pages! :)
Ari is great. I took him for 1020 & 2010. He is helpful but only if you seek it. He is fair (if not easy) in all grading procedures. He makes class entertaining as well as understandable. He could speak Spanish 100% of the time but chose not to for clarity. He's great. I recommend him to all. I wish he tauhgt more upper level courses!
Good teacher. Study hard, do the homework, and memorize vocab and you should do well. I had to spend alot of time on the work but I ended up w an A. His only problem is he speaks ALOT of spanish even tho his english is perfect so it can be hard to know what he is saying if you didn't memorize the vocab well enough. I recommend him
Do your homework and participate as much as you can in class and you'll do fine. I didn't do so hot on the final, but did well on the previous tests and did all the required work and came out with an A. Do QUIA!
So... all you do in class is work out of the book. Yeah, this sucks, but spanish is departmentalized so it's not his fault. 2 essays, 3 tests, 2 required movies. Not a hard class if you have a good spanish background. Tests are straight from the book. Really nice guy, take him for sure
Gutman is great. He is really funny and really is interested in his students learning spanish effectivley. 2 Tests, 3 essays (real easy), and 2 interviews. He also gives pop quizzes which kind of suck but don't count for much. Do Quia and Recordings and go to class and you are easily going to make a B. I hate Spanish but Senor Gutman made it fun.
First time ever taking Spanish and I got a B! His class was fun and he is a great guy. My whole class loved him and he is a good teacher. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND TAKE ARI !
I have mixed feelings. He is a great guy, funny, personable. But he speaks all in Spanish during class, he grades compositions very strictly, and requires 2 spanish interviews that I believe are way too involved for first year spanish students. If you like Spanish, take him. If you don't, don't take him. You really have to enjoy learning spanish.
After not having Spanish for about 3 years, it was nice to have Gutman for class. He does speak only in spanish most of the class, but he is helpful, funny, and personable. The interviews and essays are difficult, but if you suck it up, it'll be a great semester.
he speaks only in spanish and it takes a ton of outside work if you never took spanish. class is mandatory and you have a pop quiz or i-clicker quiz everyday so you actually have to attend. you do 2 interviews, and the second is with a partner and requires a ton of preparation. do not take him if you have no experience with spanish!!!
Gutman's class is not easy but it has been one of the more fun I've taken at Auburn. We used the textbook all the time and it's important to study the material quite a bit outside of class. He grades the hardest on the interviews and essays. Tests aren't bad and keep your i clicker with you for pop quizzes. I would definitely recommend him!
Awesome teacher! Takes a lot of work, and the interviews are pretty difficult, but a phenomenal teacher!
Other than compositions and interviews, the material is pretty easy. But he certainly makes no distinction between those who studied Spanish in high school and those who didn't because he teaches entirely in Spanish which makes it very difficult on those who are unfamiliar. And his habit of randomly calling on people is annoying. Funny guy though.
Interviews are difficult, but the class itself isn't hard - if you've had spanish before. He speaks in Spanish the whole class, but will explain things in English if you just really don't get it. He uses the textbook every day, and loves to give quizzes. A challenging class, but fun nonetheless!
Mr. Gutman is a very cool guy. Attendance is mandatory, you can only miss like three. I also had him at 8 am. He is not hard, but not easy. I though his Spanish One class would be easier. I feel bad for the people who didnt take Spanish in High School cause they would have to be confused. Oveall, he is pretty good!
He's a great guy, very funny. Teaches all in Spanish, but will make things very clear for you. He obviously wants his students to succeed. Take him, best professor in the Spanish department.
He made the class as simple as possible. He always offered to help and returned emails quickly. He's the department leader so that was also helpful.
WOULD NOT CURVE AN 89.44 to an A but would curve a 79.45 to a B :)
Great professor! Super helpful and nice. Teaches all in Spanish but makes it easy to understand. His teaching style prepares you for upper levels. HILARIOUS. Take him if you get the chance!!!
Senor Gutman is really laid back. He wants you to attend class and learn, but he does not punish you for not really being into it. The online homework sucks and he doesn't accept late assignments. Make sure you do it bc its worth 20% of your grade. Other than that, he gives you what you need to do well in his class.
This was a great class. SeƱor Gutman did a good job teaching the material. Only thing, definitely keep up with MySpanishLab. I missed a few points for not completing some activities.
Mr Gutman is a fair teacher. He explains things well but you have to study all the vocab in the book on your own which can be challenging. He has a lot of quizzes throughout the course but he is a nice grader! he gives partial credit if your answer is very close. Make sure you study, especially if you have never taken spanish before. DO THE LABS!
Mr. Gutman is a fair grader and really cares about you learning the material. Beware, he teaches all in Spanish and you HAVE to do the online labs because they count for a huge portion of your final grade. As long as you participate and know your vocab, you're golden!
He was a really nice guy who was always willing to help. He does not have a lot of energy when teaching so it can get a little boring. He did not make the class too difficult but you did have to show up in order to get a good grade!
Really good class for anyone that has or has not taken Spanish. Easy A. doesn't review vocabulary in class. do the Spanish lab online because it is a free grade so just do it. go to class. very laid back and easy to work with!
Overall, he's a great professor. I walked into this class didn't know a single word of Spanish and I made an A for the first exam. I would recommend to take his class if you're an absolute beginner for Spanish. He'll understand and give you help. Not a tough a grader. Extra credit provided.
First of all, every quiz, test, and oral assignment in Spanish are department-wide, so your professor doesnt matter. However, Gutman is really great at explaining the concepts and making sure you do well. There is a lot of homework due online each week, but it isnt difficult (again, department-wide). His lectures are also entertaining and funny.
Mr. Gutman is a great teacher. He always emails back very fast and he wants all of his students to pass. He is very clear out of what he wants from his students so if you follow his guidelines, you'll pass.
This class was not very difficult and the way he sets the grading is in favor with the student. However, he seemed to have a very nonchalant teaching method that came off as not caring during class. He was still a good teacher to have and you have any problems he is willing to help resolve it.
Great teacher, funny. Make sure you go to class. Gives some pop quizzes and will tell you the class before sometimes. Must have the text book. Do my spanish lab (heavily graded in final grade)!! Exams are hard, have to study.
For an entry level class he is hard. He does not try to help you like the other professor, Mr. Bazo, does. I and multiple people in that class that never passed a quiz or test. When Bazo came and substituted for us I did better on the quiz. The extra credit does nothing to your grade, completely pointless. He talks about Skybar to much, it's weird.
So I looked at reviews on here before I took his class and it was all positive and everyone came out with an A, even with no prior knowledge. Well I don't believe that. I came in with some knowledge and I still made a B. By the final there was no chance of even making an A. All other entry level teachers seem to be better at explaining/teaching.
Absolutely loved him! This is definitely not an easy class and he makes you work for a good grade, but he explains everything very well and is open to answer questions anytime. This class was a "flipped classroom" approach, and he made sure that everyone understood the content that we had to learn outside of class. If you can, TAKE HIM!!!
I took the online section of his class so I did not have face to face interaction but he was great at communicating all assignments on canvas, available during office hours/review sessions, and super understanding if anyone needed anything.
Mr. Gutman is one of the best professors I have ever had! He is so kind and funny and he's a great spanish teacher. He explains everything well and goes over what will be on every test/project so you are well prepared. He also offers a lot of extra credit points at the end of the semester which is great! 11/10 recommend!!
I also read the reviews for Ari Gutman and thought that he would be an exceptional professor, he is not. It is already the third week of school and he is disorganized and does not help students. He speaks in Spanish the entire time, which is challenging, . DO NOT take him, especially if you are beginner, you will be wasting you time.
Professor Gutman is phenomenal. Auburns Spanish classes have a flipped classroom format meaning there is a lot of homework, but that is the same as every profesor you will have. Professor Gutman is funny, engaging, and cares about his students. He speaks Spanish in class but clarifies in English. TAKE HIM.
Sometimes, Ari Gutman would get an attitude with students who had a hard time understanding. He had a nonchalant attitude at times when you are trying to express how you feel. I know he had a lot going on this semester with his family but he could have been a better teacher. The test are hard and he will not give you points if he suspects cheating.
He seems like a super nice guy, but DO NOT take this class online. This class has more work than all my other classes combined and I'm a senior. The class is basically taught on a website, not by the prof, and there's so much work. Like things due almost every day, even on breaks. Again he seems like a nice guy but the workload is ridiculous.
He is a very nice guy, however, the class is a lot more complicated than it needs to be. This is an intro to Span. class, and the tests and his grading DO NOT align with the intro level that students are taking. I spoke conversational spanish prior to taking his class and still struggled to meet his grading criteria. Homework every other night and
Mr. Gutman was a very nice man. However, this class was insanely hard for no reason. We used a website called contrasena and there was work to do on there almost every single day. It felt like in class I did not learn one single thing. Very nice, just not quite the best for elementary spanish.
The other reviewers are too stupid to realize that Gutman has no control over how the class is taught. The entire Spanish department is structured in a dumb way, which is in NO WAY Mr. Gutman's fault as a professor. He is funny and tries to be as helpful as the program allows him to be. I will say, he does grade a bit harsh, but he is overall good.
We used contrasena in class, which is VERY annoying. I missed one night of contrasena all semester, and it hurt my grade a lot. I also missed 2 classes, and that hurt my grade as well. He grades VERY harshly on projects and tests, but they are not too difficult. However, he is an awesome teacher/person. Take him if you can, but don't miss class/hw.
Class is set up by the Spanish department to have a lot of HW. He's nice but doesn't always teach in a way that is helpful to me. Isn't always clear on what he's asking in class, then answers his own questions, not allowing us to participate, sometimes cutting you off. Kinda sarcastic, which is funny sometimes but other times it comes off as rude.
Wouldn't recommend a teacher more. He is so funny and makes a small class super close and fun. This class is thru lingro hub, and it is around 100 questions every other day. A lot of hw, but he is a gr8 teacher. The exams are so hard for no reason but u will be fine if u study and do ALL THE LINGROHUB! missing any will drop ur grade. go2 xtra cred
Dr. Gutman is an amazing professor. He is very forgiving and really wants students to learn. Attendance is mandatory, but is important in learning a new language (as you would expect). A lot of the homework and assignments are set by the department for ALL Spanish instructors. He is also very graceful on the oral final exam.
Even though it is an online class, there is ALOT of work. We use contrasena, and there is work due pretty much every other day, and it takes a while to get it done. The tests aren't awful, but they aren't easy either. Dr. Gutman is very kind though, he responds pretty quickly to emails, and is always willing to help.
I love him and he is a fantastic teacher, but I loathe this class. Software used requires lots of homework. Found tests to be very difficult if you are not constantly practicing spanish.
Exactly who I would want as a language professor--speaks in Spanish a majority of the time but will explain in English. Makes the class understandable during lectures but heavy on homework and lots of projects/exams to prepare for. If you put in the work you'll be fine.
Gutman wasn't bad but it is just the way the department does Spanish. The attendance policy is bogus as well. I failed basically all of the tests but I am still able to skate by with a C so I will take it. Learning a language isn't easy, but Gutman seems to care. I'd rather take Spanish at Southern Union.
I LOVE Dr. Gutman. He is so nice and funny and really cares about his students. Spanish is hard but if you put the effort in you can definitely get an A. I highly recommend going to the extra credit MESA because you actually learn and i think it helped me do well in the class. I met some amazing people here! Have fun with it and learn!
Professor Gutman himself is a great teacher and extremely caring for his students. He responds to emails extremely fast as well. The language department at Auburn does make it difficult and i would not recommend taking it online. But Professor Gutman himself is amazing.
A LOT OF WORK but Professor Gutman is very nice and will always help if you need it. His review videos are extremely helpful before tests
This rating has nothing to do with my professor. Be prepared to have put alot of time into this class. Do not take this to avoid another class You will always be doing some type of work for this class and you have to stay on top of it or you will fall behind. For this being elementary spanish, this was hard for me, and I know others as well.
took it online so cant say much about his personality since i didn't really meet him. LOTS of homework/ projects and always something that needs to be done. If you don't have other heavy course work it might not be so bad but if taking other hard classes beware this will take a lot of time. He seemed nice and easy to contact just lots of work
Spanish at Auburn is hard and I understand, but in my opinion he didn't do a very good job explaining concepts or taking time to make sure we understood what he was saying. If you don't go to class, you lose a lot of attendance points. I've never stressed more about tests in my life just to never make an A.
Class is standardized, so it's hard to do anything on the amount of work. Lecture was okay, but very hard to engage with, which is an essential in learning Spanish. Would take another professor if I had the option to, there are some out there who care a lot more and will create more engaging environments to learn and become proficient in Spanish.
Gutman was a good professor, but I had a hard time staying engaged during class. Most of the Spanish classes follow a standard method, so I'm sure there is another class where you could learn even more. He was tough on grading and took off points for the smallest things, but he is just a nice guy trying to do his job.
He is fine but you have to show up or your grade will pay for it. He never cancels class and his class is somewhat decent.
Sr. Gutman was amazing! He explained Spanish and English very well and was easy to follow, was so scared to take Spanish because I heard it was awful, but it wasn't with Mr. Gutman. Lots of Contrasena but thats just the Spanish program at Auburn.
DO NOT TAKE THE ONLINE CLASS!!! The online class does not go so in-depth with establishing a better understanding of each unit. It focuses on the generalization of the topic which would be (somewhat) okay, if the homework and exams were assigned to a fluent Spanish speaker rather than someone with an elementary understanding.
He is very kind and was funny during lectures! He took time to ensure we understood what he was saying and the lectures did help a lot with assignments if you paid attention. It's a flipped classroom so there is homework due before class but it's never difficult and it's unlimited attempts so don't stress about it too much just stay on top of it.
SO. MUCH. WEBSITE. WORK. it was so annoying and just so much busy work that I just wanted to get it over with. he is a really tough grader and I still feel like i do not know spanish at all.
Professor Gutman was amazing! He is funny, caring, and made sure we really understood his lectures. I would 100% take him again. My only problems with the class such as attendance affecting our grade so much and contraseña were due to the Spanish department and not professor Gutman. I highly recommend!
