this class is not your normal Women studies class. It is demanding and she makes you wrap your head around all aspects of queer theories. There are a lot of people who think only Women are in these classes or gays, but there is so much more to it than that!! Its amazing. I would recommend it to anyone
Great instructor, but don't think you can skate by on just opinions alone. Do the reading and respond honestly and you'll do fine.
AMAZING prof! Really interested in getting students to think outside the box. She doesn't "lecture", but rather helps to facilitate discussion---making sure that EVERYONE gets something out of the course. I consider myself fortunate to have her on my thesis committee.
Dr. B is a very open minded teacher that expects you to respond with very high levels of critical thinking. An your analysis have to be always thinking globally about the problem. she gives extra credit opportunities which involve activities going on at the university. If you flunk a short write just go to office ours and she will make it a 10.=)
I felt that I learned a great deal in this course. However, the majority of the grading was based on my opinions. I found that if my opinion did not match Dr. Burford's, my grade suffered. I felt disrespected in this class because of my opinions. To do well in the class, just agree with everything the professor says and leave your opinions out.
Arianne was absolutely amazing! Completely helpful and doesn't like to put her students down. She helps and facilitates discussions. Advice to you is to do the readings and make sure to tie them into your opinions. Stand your ground on them as well, just be sure to back them up and she will gladly listen and give you the grade you deserve.
As long as you do the readings and watch the films you will get a great grade. Arianne is an amazing professor who genuinely cares about her students. She becomes more of a friend and a mentor than a teacher.
AMAZING teacher! She knows what she's talking about and pushes you to expand your thinking and level of consciousness. The content is really engaging! A lot of work, but if you keep up you'll do fine. She creates a safe and inclusive classroom environment. The class is based most on student discussion, she tries not to lecture too much.
Dr. Burford has a hard class because it's heavy in reading and writing. But she fosters one of the only safe environments on campus & it makes for mind blowing class discussions. Not only is she one of a handful of open minds but she is extremely caring of her students. She gives endless feedback on writing, it rocks. She'll change your life!
I took this class online&thought Dr. Burford was great! She's encouraging and gave good feedback. The class was only half a semester but was a lot more work than I anticipated even for someone who takes a lot of online classes. Be prepared to read, a lot! There are 4 quizzes&4 discussions along with a final paper. You must read to pass the quizzes!
She was so helpful and understanding if you missed a due date. I missed a discussion post by accident and she went out of her way to email me and remind me while also allowing me to submit it without being counted late. Be sure to read though or you will not pass. Readings are all very interesting just long. I would really recommend her.
I really enjoyed my first year seminar with Arianne. Their class is definitely not an easy A, but Arianne is the kind of professor you'll want to impress. They always welcome discussion and encourage the class to work together. They're super supportive and understanding, so if you're worried about your grade, all you have to do is talk to them.
Arianne is an AH-MAZING professor. They really care about the wellbeing of their students, and adapt the class to fit the students' needs. They are very kind and approachable. There are pop quizzes, but if you do the readings, you'll be fine. Arianne is one of a kind, and they are super spectacular. Would DEFINITELY reccommend to anyone :)
Her grading is very intense. This is a 100 level course, but she grades as if it were a 400 level course. She doesn't like when your opinion doesn't match hers.
Arianne is the best teacher I've ever had, hands down. Everyone respected them and they respected their students in return. They created such a good, positive learning environment and I gained very valuable knowledge. I would for sure take their class again.
Arianne is somebody that really enjoys what she does, but if you aren't used to subject material, this class is pretty tough. If you have opinions that clash with hers, you get marked off for it. Don't take this class with a lot of other credits unless you want to be up all night very often to catch up on the readings.
Arianne is an awesome professor who respects their students and expects respect in return. They create a great class dynamic thats really supportive and open. You'll learn a lot in this course. Would definitely take again.
Arianne is hands down the best professor I have had in college. They are incredibly understanding and respectful to all of their students. The course material is important and I'm very glad I have gained so much knowledge through the readings. Lots of reading is involved but other activities are incorporated as well. Not a traditional boring class.
Dr. Ari is the best professor I've had. They respect their students & provide a safe and comfortable learning environment. Most of their classes are discussion based which actually engages students & doesn't make you want to fall asleep. Do the readings! They are interesting & worth your while. Take as many classes with the professor as you can!
Dr. Burford was an amazing professor. They made sure to cover all of the topics in depth and they made sure we all felt engaged in a lecture hall. The content is extremely interesting and as new issues arise, the content of the class will as well. I would recommend taking this class if you don't mind reading up on interesting social issues.
Arianne's course seemed very simple when I first started taking the class, I would get 100 on the tests, but when they started assigning papers and discussions, it seemed extremely difficult to get a good grade on. Unfortunately if you don't completely agree with their opinions, you won't get an A. Lots of reading involved, so don't get behind!
I took this class online to fulfill one of my diversity requirements. Although this class wasnt necessarily difficult, the grading criteria was extremely unclear, and it was difficult to decipher what they want.
This class is solely based off of writing assignments (three tests, a discussion post, and a final paper). The criteria needs to be more specific on assignments and the teacher is a very strict grader with no helpful feedback. I don't recommend this class unless you enjoy the subject and are skilled at writing.
I can guarantee you will not pass this class unless you agree with the professors opinions. Additionally, if you do not participate in class discussions, which isnt mandatory nor on the syllabus as mandatory, then you will also not get a decent grade on any of your assignments. They will assume you do no work in the class if you dont communicate.
Dr. Ari is such a phenomenal professor. They genuinely care about their students and want to make sure everyone understands the material. Their classes are heavily discussion-based, so having your own opinion (and sharing it in class) is vital to being successful. Be prepared for a lot of reading and films to watch, but it's so worth it!
If you love having discussions on important topics, this is a great class to be in. I loved it. If you go to their office hours they are very helpful. Being in class and reading the readings is essential to getting a good grade. The quizzes are based on class discussions and the readings.
The tests are extremely tough if you do not agree with the views of the class. Go to office hours if you have trouble, but it's better to write to please than to share your own opinions on tests. Professor is fine but be prepared for a harder elective class than you thought if you're doing this for liberal arts credit.
Dr. Ari is mostly interested in your perspectives and opinions on the literature and film discussed. There is no real wrong answer on tests and assignments but they want to see you thinking critically, so don't try to skate by without doing the work. But they are very understanding and willing to accommodate students.
Dr. Ari is my favorite professor! They care a lot about their students, and are extremely welcoming to everyone. All of their classes are mainly discussion based, with some quizzes and take home tests. As long as you pay attention in class, you'll do fine on them. It does a great deal of good to you to form your own opinions. go to office hours!
This was my fav class ever (Trans existence and resilience) - Dr. Ari created a space that was really very welcoming, refreshing, and helpful as a trans person. There is a lot to read/watch, but all of the articles/books/movies were interesting and helped me a lot with my view of myself. I also learned a lot about activists I wouldn't have known.
Dr. Ari is an amazing professor! I've taken many of their classes and they are amazing. They genuinely care about you as a student and it really enhances your learning/experience. I would recommend them and their classes to everyone!
Dr. Ari is an amazing professor! I've taken many of their classes and they are amazing. They genuinely care about you as a student and it really enhances your learning/experience. I would recommend them and their classes to everyone! This class had the best environment. Everyone was able to cultivate meaningful dialogue and friendships!!!
Being a TA for Dr. Ari was an enriching experience. It taught me how to engage with students to improve their learning and even strengthened my own working with them! Dr. Ari is a pleasure to work with and have as a mentor.
Dr. Ari is an amazing professor! I've taken many of their classes and they are amazing. They genuinely care about you as a student and it really enhances your learning/experience. I would recommend them and their classes to everyone! This is a great starting course for the WGS Department-and I would especially recommended it with Dr. Ari!!!
Dr. Ari is an amazing professor! I've taken many of their classes and they are amazing. They genuinely care about you as a student and it really enhances your learning/experience. I would recommend them and their classes to everyone! This class is amazing, you get to dive into queer films and media.
Dr. Ari has been the most outstanding professor that I have had. They show respect for all students and allow for honest discourse. I learned so much from them, lessons go above and beyond the standardized academia. Dr. Ari has taught me a lot about queer studies and has shown me a path to my own healing. There arent enough words to say thank you
I've had the chance to take several classes with Dr. Ari and they are the best professor I have ever had. They have a great teaching style that encourages a lot of enthusiastic discussions. The material they present in their classes is crazy interesting. They are supportive, very available outside of class time and really enjoy their students.
Dr. Ari is an amazing teacher to have for women gender studies, when they lecture you feel inspired by the historical events that we talked about. the room was very comfortable and they welcomed all voices. I TOTALLY recommend them if you are taking a WGS class. you will have about 3-4 tests that will be based off class lectures and group convos.
overall Dr. Ari is an good, knowledgeable professor. But they fall short because they hold students to different standards. Student A could turn in an A+ discussion but due to unclear instructions be given a B on it while the content of the post is A+ Student B could turn 1 out of 10 things and theyll bend over backwards to pass the student
I was left the impression that this class was going to be somewhat easy, but it was the exact opposite for me. For the tests, all of it is analysis. If you aren't good at analyzing, like me, you're screwed. The deadline for midterm came and that was when I got the grade back for the first test. I failed the test but didn't have time to fix it.
I LOVE Dr. Ari, this class has been by far the highlight of my college career. It strengthened my writing more than any other class I've taken for it. Dr. Ari is extremely helpful and understanding, the class itself is wonderful as well. I made some lovely friends in it and felt so supported by everyone involved 10/10 recommend
Took this class because I needed an elective and thought it'd be interesting. I recommend taking just about anything else. Another rating I read at the beginning of the semester said Dr. Ari only likes views that align with their own, and I didn't understand it then, but I do now. To get a good grade you have to cater to what they believe.
Dr. Ari is so fun, friendly, and caring. I was in their creative writing class based on oppression and resistance so it was some heavy stuff, and I left class feeling drained some days but it was beyond worth it. They (and everyone in the class) helped me become such a stronger writer. DEFINITELY recommend this class, it was a great experience
Dr. Aris classes are an amazing way to talk about the issues that matter. They way they teach is amazing and every day you really do learn something new. However they are a really harsh grader depending on who you are. They made me work for my grade and for some other students they were practically handed As.
Though the structure of their classes arent exactly my cup of tea usually (class discussions, group projects, many papers), I feel that they challenged me in a good way. Dr. Ari is a professor that actually cares about their students feelings, and they are not afraid to get vulnerable and talk about important, yet personal/ difficult topics.
I took this class to get a clear view of the views of the left. I had an open mind and I was willing to learn. I started to realize that I was being treated differently because of my views. If your views don't align correctly you will fail. So much for a class about "acceptance."
Lot of reading and her BB Learn page is all over the place. All the readings for the semester are in one folder and things are labeled differently in the syllabus and in BB Learn. She's not clear in emails and is little help with questions. Her grading is never consistent and you never know what she wants. I will never take her class again!
Dr. Ari is spectacular. They expect you to be respectful and willing to learn, and you will have a lot of class discussions and papers to write. But they give great feedback, try to create open dialogue, and, above all, actually care about their students. Genuinely the best professor I've had thus far. Just make sure you spend time on your writing!
I have always liked WGS classes but they were a horrible professor. They only accepted what they believed in. They were not open to any other views or perspectives. Received a bad grade on an assignment because I wasn't vulnerable enough but I wrote about my life and how my beliefs were so different from my family and the controversy it caused.
Don't get me wrong, I like Dr. Ari. They are really cool and chill. But for this class, be prepared to read, a lot. Also if you are not very good at analysis, like me, I would not suggest this class because that is all there is. Overall Dr. Ari is a good person and cares about their students.
Loved Dr. Ari and this class. Our discussions were in depth and informative, and I even learned a lot taking them, and Dr. Ari always made me feel welcome and accepted in a way that I hadn't really felt in an academic setting. The manifesto we had to write was genuinely really fun, too! After taking this class, I declared my minor in Queer Studies.
This is a discussion based class where students are encouraged to discuss their LGBT experiences and how it relates to readings/society. This is not an academic or research based class , it is personal accounts only. There is definitely a political bias present and it can feel frustrating at times if your beliefs differ. Overall its an okay class.
Dr. Ari is the reason I am a queer studies minor. After taking two classes with them I realized that I really wanted to take more and so I decided to add on the minor. This class has a lot of required readings as well as some pretty big concepts you have to understand but Dr. Ari does a wonderful job helping wherever you need. 10/10 would recommend
It feels very important to say that this professor's name is Dr. Ari yet they continue to be dead-named on a variety of professor platforms, so please be respectful if you have them in class or even if you're just leaving a review. They are a tough grader and some assignment instructions are very unclear, I wouldn't take a class with them again.
Dr. Ari is very particular about how she wants papers written yet she does a horrible job at explaining what she actually wants. Her grading is not consistent among students and attendance and participation play a huge role in your final grade. There is a lot of reading, writing, and discussing. Do not take this class if you want an easy A.
There is lots of readings and a few short papers. The class is centered around discussing the readings so get ready to read and to talk. The final class grade is heavily based on class participation so if you have a hard time speaking up and getting involved in class discussions then you will not succeed in this class. You cannot BS this class.
Dr. Ari is one of my favorite professors, they always give feedback on things you turn in and also help in office hours. They really care about their students and want you to think on the concepts. There's a lot of reading but that's expected. Make sure to participate and as long as you show that you thought about the readings you will be good.
Despite completing all of the readings and attending most lectures, I don't feel I learned anything. Dr. Ari is a very harsh grader even though they do not give clear instructions. I also felt that I had to change my opinions to align with theirs in order to get a good grade on tests and assignments. This class was a waste of my time and effort.
I personally liked Dr. Ari but I know that a lot of my classmates had a problem with how they grade. They are pretty rigorous when it comes to grading and had strict expectations that made writing essays difficult bec you didn't really know what they wanted. In this class specifically you had to reference intersectionality in every paragraph
Dr.Ari is an amazing professor who I really appreciate. Taking their class honestly opened me up to many new types of things especially queer media. Their teaching style is inspirational and overall they are a very respectful person. During the class discussions I felt like I could honestly say everything that came to mind; we're allow to disagree.
I am taking an intro to queer studies course and so far I am really enjoying the course! Most of the course is discussion on readings. I also came in not identifying as queer and as long as you keep an open mind, this class will teach you a lot. Really considered adding a queer studies minor, but I graduate before I can accomplish that :(
Prof Burford can be a super hard grader with tests, but I think that's what makes their class amazing because you are pushed to really understand the concepts. This class needs tough grading otherwise nobody would take it seriously and think about other people's experiences. Ari picks amazing readings/films & the course is super enlightening!!
Dr. Ari is a great person and is super fun to be around. I wouldn't recommend taking any of their classes if you're not very much on the liberal side.I got over a 100% on all my papers, but I wrote 300% more than what was expected because the guidelines/grading criteria are SO vague. Grade mainly based off 2 essays, 1 quiz, 1 presentation, attndce.
Dr. Ari is kind and understanding but their expectations for assignments tend to be super unclear and my grade has suffered before as a result of this. There are tons of papers but rarely a specific rubric and (usually) unclear instructions to guide you. Though I enjoy the class more than some of my others, discussion in class can drone on.
Dr. Ari is my all-time favorite professor I've ever taken. You read a lot in this class to understand good examples of writing as resistance and it helps a lot. They're really receptive to working with you if you don't know how to develop your writing and really take the time to see you as a person first and student second. Don't take them if bigot
Ari is a kind and caring professor and makes the class very enjoyable. I love their energy and dedication to teaching us the readings and having us discuss them. Make sure you read all the assigned readings and take notes.
Dr. Ari is kind and they care about their students. Their grading process was confusing at times and they don't post your overall grade in the class in Canvas until the end of the semester (?), but I still enjoyed the material we discussed in class. Participation counts for a lot, and they're pretty strict about grading it.
Ari is a wonderful person with thorough insights into the many constructs that both created and effect Women and gender-diverse individuals today. However, you are expected to enter the class with a textbook's worth of knowledge on the subject, and Ari is not prone to working with you if you struggle to understand. 100% effort earns a C at best.
Dr. Ari is unorganized which can hinder students' learning processes. Their class is off-the-cuff and run by students with minimal teaching on behalf of Dr. Ari. Their grading is frustrating as they refuse to put in your final grade until the end of the semester and they are very specific about how they want papers, though will not provide a rubric
Dr. Ari does not do much teaching in this class. The class is completely led by students, with students leading all discussions. The only thing Dr. Ari does is assign the readings. The class is unorganized, the syllabus contains guidelines that Dr. Ari contradicts in class, and they have specific expectations for writing but never provide a rubric.
Taken multiple classes with Dr. Ari and each time it's the same: they don't provide rubrics for most of the assignments and then grade them harshly & based purely on what thoughts they have while grading it that you obviously should've included (based on literally nothing). They usually make students lead the class instead of doing it themselves.
The most unorganized prof I've everrr had. Can't keep track of their own schedule and it always hurts their students. Super strict grading and can be dismissive sometimes in group conversations and in one on ones.
Dr. Ari is incredibly unorganized and does not know how to use Canvas. Students entirely lead the classes; Dr. Ari assigns the readings and sits in class as though they are a student. The class is completely discussion based and Dr. Ari provides no concrete explanations of topics or clear grading rubrics.
Where do I even start with this professor? Dr. Ari had a very welcoming front but once the class began there was no help whatsoever. Assignments do not have a clear prompt or rubric and are graded extremely hard. They don't even post final grades until after the semester is over so you don't even know what grade you have. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
This course has 3 tests, 1 discussion board, and a final paper. Since there are so few things to grade on, they take a long time and can be heavy subjects. Ari is super sweet, understanding, and just a good person who is here to help you. They are a super fast grader with great feedback which is always nice. I recommend the class and the professor!
The class itself was not conducive to learning, as Dr Ari just sat in the class, participating as though they're a student. They provided few comments that aided learning, and students lead almost every discussion throughout the class. Though Dr Ari has a huge respect for students, the class itself was too student led.
I felt it was very disrespectful and disappointing to have an online class revolving around intersectionality to blatantly ignore the needs of individuals with learning disabilities. EVERY exam and powerpoint had major spelling issues and you can tell copy and pasted info with 20+ fonts and layouts that make reading information very difficult.
Upwards of 100 pages of difficult-to-parse reading due every week, and the professor would not only never explain the topic, but would also rarely even contribute to discussions. Grading criteria and assignment instructions were vague, though tough grading made it clear Dr. Ari had a specific idea of how assignments should be done.
Dr. Ari preaches accessibility but can never follow through. They assign large amounts of reading and force the class to talk the entire period unless they're rambling about nothing for 10 minutes. They are incredibly hard to reach, and oftentimes I got the feeling they did not really care about teaching. Their grading criteria is insanely unclear.
Probably my favorite professor. Class is discussion-based and collaborative, don't take this if you aren't willing to talk. I loved the discussion style and learned from both Dr. Ari and my classmates. Lots of reading, barely any other homework. Tests are untimed. Really accessible in office hours, wants to help students do well in class and life!
They are one of the nicest professors I have had at NAU, and if it wasn't for the mountain of homework and readings, they'd have a 5/5. I take this class the same semester as Calc 1, and this class had more readings and assignments than Calc! The tests were easy, the professor is nice, and the final project was fun; but the homework was too much.
This class was "Feminist Media," but it is a film class. The grading system is awful. There are only a handful of assignments and they are each worth way too many points. I received one bad grade on a quiz and my grade dropped from a high B to a low C. Attendance is also worth too much. I honestly felt like I was wasting my time in this class.
Very opinion based, no real research or information, just reading many queer experiences and then Dr. Ari talking about their personal opinion. If yours was different, it was not easy to participate and you feel excluded. If you do not talk/participate in class you will not pass. Hypocritical on accepting and integrating people with disabilities.
I really enjoyed the community this class gave me + I really appreciate DrAri for being able to accomplish that. sometimes I did feel alienated if I didnt have the same opinion as the reading. To put it plainly, maybe I just wasnt woke enough for this class lol. though i would totally recommend if youre really passionate about queer activism
Dr. Ari is an amazing person in general but an awful professor. Their lectures are mainly student lead where everyone sits in a circle and debates while they sit and watch. They grade very harshly, where you'd submit a well-done assignment but they'll say you didn't "express yourself" enough. To top it off there are A LOT of readings as well.
I like Dr. Ari a lot as a person, but this was the hardest class I have ever taken and I almost dropped my minor. There is so much reading every day and it is a discussion-based class. If you don't say something in every class, you lose participation points. They are luckily accessible outside of class and they want you to succeed.
Professor Burford did not know how to use Canvas, and I believe this impacted the class greatly. There were many assignments that I completed and turned in that they gave me a 0 on for no reason. I also felt as if my opinion was not valued in the class, and the only voices that mattered were those that came from WGS majors.
Every assignment is uninteresting, and I had several issues with assignments I turned in not being graded.
Dr. Ari does not really teach. They compile readings and "facilitate" discussions where students say nonsense because their grade will severely suffer if they do not speak at least twice in a 40 person, hour & 15 min, class. They also type stuff in all caps, riddled with typos. I wonder how they would react if they received student work like that.
Do not take this class unless you like arbitrary grading with little to no rubric or standards. The content of the class is not difficult. Considering there was one lecture on intersectionality that was very brief and vague, you are not equipped to analyze films through an intersectional lens in a way that meets Dr. Ari's harsh standards.
I like Dr. Ari as a person, but this class wasn't it for me. Almost all of the movies we watched were blockbusters, which, to me, inherently cannot be feminist, at least not yet. They seemed to be chosen based on Dr. Ari's personal taste as opposed to any real value. We didn't go over any theory, all class discussion was superficial and shallow.
This professor was so awful, it really proves the point that just because you have a doctorate doesn't not mean you should be a professor. They grade holistically and has no real rubrics. They do not know how to use canvas and will get upset with you if you email them asking about grade/gradebook. If possible avoid taking any course with Ari!
There was some difficulty in the beginning learning what they expected from assignments but it was pretty easy once we caught on, as someone who doesn't love group work or loud conversations this course had its difficulties but beyond that I had a lot of fun. the prof is understanding (usually) and supportive and always gives great feedback.
